Joseph Eribo - Ekiti State CP

By Ayodele Oni

The mysterious disappearance of a day old child at a government owned health facility in Ekiti state has caught the attention of the State Police Commissioner, Joseph Eribo, who has ordered an investigation into the incident.

The incident, which happened at the Okeyimi Health Centre in Ado Ekiti, has led to panic among officials, especially those directly linked to the delivery of the child.

The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of Monday when healthcare workers on duty attempted to attend to the baby, that was delivered on Sunday, only to discover she was missing.

The situation quickly plunged the hospital into chaos, leaving the infant’s mother, family members, patients, and staff in shock and distress.

According to sources within the facility, both the mother and several hospital personnel, including a security guard, were taken into custody for questioning as part of preliminary investigations.

Confirming the development, the spokesperson for the Ekiti State Police Command, SP Sunday Abutu, said four suspects had been arrested in connection with the case.

He disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, Eribo, had ordered a full-scale investigation led by the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID.

“The Commissioner of Police has directed the State CID to thoroughly investigate the case and ensure that the missing baby is found.

“So far, four persons have been arrested and are currently providing useful information to assist in our ongoing investigation,” Abutu stated.

El Rufai Vows To Stop President Tinubu’s Second Term, Says Govt Incompetent

Nasir E-Rufai and Bola Tinubu

By Ayodele Oni

Chieftain of African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has declared that President Bola Tinubu’s Government is incompetent. He said the lives of  Nigerians might be at stake if he secures another term in the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during a grassroots mobilisation rally in Sokoto organised by the opposition coalition led by the ADC, El-Rufai made a bold declaration against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and pledged to actively campaign for its removal from power.

“I’m not in politics to gain anything for myself. I’m here to serve. When the government fails to serve the people, I see it as my duty, as a senior citizen, to speak out and act to change the situation.”

El-Rufai, once a prominent figure in the APC, warned that allowing the present administration to continue beyond 2027 could lead to the complete collapse of Nigeria’s social fabric.

“We’re in Sokoto to begin mobilising Nigerians against the APC, both at the state and federal levels. If this party continues in power beyond 2027, what remains of Nigeria’s social capital may be destroyed.

We may not even have a country. This is a fight for survival.”

El-Rufai left the APC in March 2025 after the Senate declined to confirm his ministerial appointment, allegedly over security concerns.

He briefly joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP), but was expelled and handed a 30-year ban over accusations including forgery of membership documents.

Asue Ighodalo

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Peoples Democratic Party’s  candidate in the 2024 Edo state off-circle gubernatorial polls, Chief Asue Ighodalo, has dismissed claims suggesting that he has abandoned the party.

The Source reports that following his exhaustion of all the  available legal options in the bid  to reverse the outcome of the September 21, 2024 election, which saw his All Progressive Congress rival, Governor Monday Okpebholo, emerge victorious, speculations have been rife concerning his possible defection to an alternative platform.

The rumours were all the more accentuated by the lingering crisis within the rank of the hitherto main opposition camp, which has led to an exodus of many of its stalwarts.

In the last 24 hours, the social media has been saturated with news of Ighodalo’s move to the nascent opposition Coalition platform the African Democratic Congress, ADC, with his supporters ahead of the 2027 election.

But in a statement issued on Monday August 4, 2025, by  the head of his media team Erhabor, the PDP Governorship flag bearer insisted that he is still a loyal and dedicated member of the PDP.

He described the purported claim of defection as “a  baseless , misleading ,and mischievous attempt at hoodwinking the teeming supporters of the PDP ,ahead of the August 16 ,2025 National Assembly by-election in the state.

” This claim is false. Dr Ighodalo remains a member of the PDP. We urge the public to disregard this baseless fabrication and the mischief behind it which is aimed at misleading our supporters ahead of the National Assembly by-elections scheduled for later this month.

“Dr Ighodalo remains focused on his vision for a prosperous ,and safe Edo, and on strengthening the PDP as a platform that truly protects the interests of the people”, the statement reads.

TSG Deplores Use of Its Name To Discredit Rivers LG Polls

Tinubu Support Group - TSG

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The National leadership of the Tinubu Support Group ,TSG ,has strongly warned against the use of its identity for unauthorized political purposes

This is as it distanced itself from the purported statement issued by some persons in Rivers state calling for the intervention of the APC National body in the process of selecting the party’s candidates for the Council election.

The Source reports that some persons who claimed to be representing the TSG in Rivers state had, at the weekend, amidst the ongoing party primaries ahead of the August 30, 2025 scheduled Local Government election in the state, urged the National leadership of the APC to take over the conduct of the party’s primaries, sale of nomination forms and all the processes leading up to the polls proper.

However, in a statement issued on Monday by its Director-General, Dr Umar Yakassai, the TSG regretted that none of the signatories to the said statement on the Rivers State Local Council polls is a recognized member of the group.

While denying any link whatsoever with the said statement, the TSG called on the general public to be wary of those who may wish to deploy its good for political gains.

“The Tinubu Support Group, TSG, strongly cautions against the unauthorized use of its name in furtherance of any localized political agenda, especially those that may seek to further divide the All Progressive Congress, APC, at a critical time for the party.

“Any communications emanating from the Tinubu Support Group will always be issued through our official channels, signed by authorized representatives only”, Yakassai stated .

The TSG DG emphasized that  as a group with national spread, comprising dedicated supporters and volunteers, it is irrevocably committed to the advancement of the policies, ideals and leadership of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

“Our focus is on strengthening party unity, promoting democracy and ensuring inclusive development across Nigeria”, he noted .

Yakassai, therefore, appealed to members, supporters and stakeholders to, as matter of necessity, prioritize the pursuit of unity, discipline and progress of the party, while  shunning acts capable of engendering rancour.

I’ve Done Well, Consider Me For Second Term – Oyebanji Tells Leadership Of Ekiti APC

0
Biodun Oyebanji

By Ayodele Oni

Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has officially notified the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) of his intention to contest for the Governorship seat for a second term.

Oyebanji who visited members of the State Executives and Local Government Party Chairmen at the APC Secretariat in Ado Ekiti on Monday, also declared that he has no caucus among the members of the party, and that he holds no grudge against anyone within the party.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC) has fixed the governorship election in Ekiti state, for June next year.

The chairman, governing council and pro Chancellor of the University of Nsukka, Kayode Ojo is also another aspirant for the governorship.

A statement by Segun Dipe, State Publicity Secretary of APC quoted the Governor as saying that he believed he had represented the Party well during the first term and had earned the confidence of not only the party faithful but the people of Ekiti State.

According to Oyebanji, the party must have heard the clarion call of the people, who gathered to endorse his second term candidacy recently along with that of the President, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and if indeed they merited the trust, they should be allowed by the party to run for the second term as the governor and President, come 2026 and 2027, respectively.

The governor said the President was really supporting the state through him and giving him special recognition and assistance.

“Please join me to thank President Tinubu and let us double our votes for him for the second term.”

He  listed some of his achievements in the state to include construction and maintenance of roads, which he said had gulped N130bn in one year, representing the entire budget of the state three years ago.

The Governor also spoke about the efforts of his administration in the area of welfare and security, which he said had translated to peaceful cohabitation by the people.

Part of his efforts to ensure peace, he said was drawing the leaders of opposition to his government and ensuring that the resources coming to the state was well managed.

To confirm the efforts of his administration, the governor challenged the Party Exco to embark on an inspection tour of the entire state to see for themselves what his government had done and how he had represented them well.

On his relationship with his predecessors in office, Oyebanji assured that it was very cordial, adding that he has a good rapport with all his predecessors in office and they are in one accord in ensuring that the state is well run.

“In Ekiti APC, the hierarchy remains such that Otunba Adebayo is at the helm, followed by Dr. Fayemi, while I am next on the ladder.

“You can see that I don’t call meetings of the party to Ikogosi, my country home, instead, we either meet at Iyin the country home of Otunba Adebayo or Isan, the country home of Dr. Fayemi.

“May be I will start holding party meetings at Ikogosi when I eventually vacate office, but not now, when I still have those two as my leaders,”  Oyebanji said.

On his relationship with the party at large, the governor said: “I have been trying my best to see to the welfare of the party and I will still do more.”

Regarding the perceived opposition within the party, the governor said it was a welcome development and he did not see anything wrong since people would always contest for good things, which only the best can win, and regarding the forthcoming election process, he urged the party to ensure the involvement of everyone within the party without any discrimination.

Earlier in his address of welcome, the Party State Chairman, Hon (Barr) Olusola Elesin, thanked  Governor Oyebanji for his regard to the party and the Exco jointly passed a vote of confidence on the governor’s administration, pledging their continued support for him.

D'Tigress

Just like their victorious Super Falcons counterparts, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has showered the D’Tigress, Nigeria’s Female Basketball Team with $100,000 on each of the 12 D’Tigress players, and an additional $50,000 to each member of the technical crew.

This follows their victory over Mali to secure a historic fifth consecutive title at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

The cash award came barely 24 hours after the team led by United State-based coach, Rena Wakama, clinched the title at the Palais des Sports de Treichville after defeating Mali by 78-64 to win their Fifth Consecutive Afrobasket Title and Seventh overall.

President Tinubu also conferred the National Honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger, OON, on the players and members of the technical crew.

In addition to the honour and Cash awards given as a token of the nation’s gratitude for their outstanding performance, the President also gifted each player and crew member a Plot of Land.

“Those Who Beheaded Imo LG Chairman In 2022 Have Been Arrested” – Gov. Uzodinma

0
Hope Uzodimma- Governor of Imo State

By Charles Igbo

The devil in human skin who carried out one of the most gruesome murders in Imo State has been arrested. And so have some of his accomplices and cheer leaders.

This was revealed on Sunday by the State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma.

Recall that in 2022, Mr Chris Ohizu, the Chairman of Ideato North Local Government Area was abducted from his house in his village. It is not known if his abductors contacted his family for ransom, or if any ransom was paid. But all efforts to locate and rescue him by Security Agencies were in vain.

Then days later, a scene that left not a few people frozen in shock, and still haunts them and triggers goose pimples, unfolded on WhatsApp platforms.

It was a video of the beheading of the LG Chairman.

He was brought out and made to kneel down in a not-too bushy area, surrounded by blood thirsty exciited boys. He was there, like a ram taken to a slaughter house. Tired. Helpless. The difference: the ram had no idea of the fate that awaited him. And, does not talk. But Ohizu knew his end was near. He was not crying. There were no tears streaming down his cheeks from his now gaunt looking eyes and face. But he made one more appeal to them, an appeal, perhaps he had been making since his abduction.

This time what he said was not audible. But from the response of the one who was gradually, but steadily tying his two hands behind him, what he said could easily be guessed. He was appealing to them, perhaps, to allow him see somebody and get something, perhaps his wife, perhaps his children. But the guy who was tying his hands heartlessly responded in Igbo language: “What makes you think you will see them again?” They were videoing and recording.

Some of them either covered their faces, or didn’t let their faces be videod. But the one who was tying his hands showed his face. They didn’t even cover Ohizu’s face so he wouldn’t see how he was going to be killed.

It now reminds one of the very starved, emaciated 24- year old Israeli hostage in Gaza who, shovel in hand, was made  to be digging his own grave. Sheer torture.

So, they let Ohizu watch as they tied him. They let him see the sharp machete with which they would behead him. And they let him watch them as they began the evil deed of beheading him.

Since that 2022, the outrage had gone down. But not the scene that still haunts. Not the pain, the heartache his family and friends had gone through, and are still going through by the mere thought of what he went through. Everybody thought that the case has gone cold. That the Government and security agencies have forgotten.

But on this Sunday of 3rd August, 2025, Governor Uzodinma dropped what, in the circumstances, could be taken as good news.

While angrily addressing the recent slaughter of tens of people in, again, in Arondizuogu, same Ideato, after a Church Service at the Government House Chapel, Uzodinma dropped the bomb. The person who beheaded the Chairman of the Ideato North LGA in 2022 has been arrested, and is in custody, and has mentioned names.

Said the visibly angry Governor as he vowed to stop at nothing to stop the senseless killings in Imo:

“Two years after, we have arrested the man who beheaded him (LG Chairman) and the man has confessed as the one who did it and has mentioned some individuals that he is working for.

“Some of them have been invited by the police and they are under interrogation.”

The Governor stressed that government will stop at nothing to ensure that those who had a hand in the dastardly act face the wrath of the law, “as many more will be invited.”

Their arrest, prosecution or even hanging, if found guilty, will not bring back Ohizu to life, or erase the pain and trauma of his family, but it is some consolation.

The assurance came on the heels of the Command’s  announcement of  the arrest of seven suspects in connection with the gruesome murder of a prominent Port Harcourt based legal practitioner, Bright Owhor.

Nothing Good Will Come From David Mark-Led ADC – Wike …Says Fmr. Senate President Lacks Capacity

0
David Mark and Nyesom Wike

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, on Monday 4, 2025, wrote off, the opposition Coalition platform, the African Democratic Congress, ADC, under the leadership of Senator David Mark, a former Senate President.

At his routine media briefing in Abuja, the immediate past Governor of Rivers State , insisted that the retired Army General lacks the capacity ,and dedication to offer a meaningful leadership to  the nascent opposition party.

The Source reports that following the formal unveiling of the ADC on July 2, 2025, as the official platform for the emerging opposition Coalition, Senator Mark ,and Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola were named its interim National Chairman and National Secretary respectively.

But Wike, on Monday, informed that he and other Peoples Democratic Party PDP stakeholders resisted pressure to make Senator Mark the National Chairman of PDP, because they were sceptical about his capabilities in steering the ship.

“Let me tell you something, when we started having issues   with the position of National Chairman from the North Central region of the country, there were pressures for David Mark to be the National Chairman of the party. But we resisted”, Wike noted

According to the FCT Minister, they refused to make Mark the National Chairman of the PDP because there were a general consensus on the part of the major stakeholders that there was nothing good that he was going to bring on board.

“Holding a position is not the same thing as making impact with the position. In the first place, what impact did Mark make as the Senate President of the Nigerian Senate for several years?

“There are nothing tangible to hold as his contributions to national development during his tenure as Senate President. So, I will rather  support, a rookie with genuine reformist intentions than cast my lot for a career politician with long a history of political office ,but with little or no impact.

“He was a Senate President under the PDP for eight years. What were his achievements? What improved under his leadership?

“I have told you, I would rather go for somebody who has not held any positions; who has come to tell me that “look, I am doing this because I want to help with change to achieve this and that.

“I will not listen to anybody who has been in power for years, who has refused to contribute anything to the development of the country, and now you come to tell me stories such as, “we need to rescue the country and all that”, Wike stated.

Wike further expressed serious doubts about the sincerity of those behind the ADC in working for the people of Nigeria.

According to him, there is no iota of sincerity of purpose on the part of the progenitors of the opposition coalition.”

OPINION: Tinubu And The North

0
Bola Ahmed Tinubu - President

By Suleiman A. Suleiman

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu must know one thing: most people in northern Nigeria feel that he has been unfair to the region in terms of his policy priorities and projects in relation to the electoral support he received from the region in 2023. There is scarcely a WhatsApp group, local radio station or small group “neighbourhood majalisa” where Tinubu’s overall relationship with the northern region has not been the subject of multiple discussions over the past two years or so. As a result, Dr Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s recent comments that Tinubu is concentrating Nigeria’s national resources in the south to the detriment of the north resonated strongly throughout the 19 northern states.

For me, Tinubu’s biggest problem is his deliberate or inadvertent political disengagement and lack of sustained communication with the northern region. No doubt, Tinubu has appointed a fairly large number of northerners to key positions in his government, as we saw in Kaduna last week. Yet, the optics of Tinubu’s presidency leaves much to be desired as his few public appearances continue to show him insulated among his small and closely-knit inner circle of Lagosian buddies. Moreover, until last week, Tinubu’s willingness to actively engage ordinary people and other critical stakeholders in the north was lacklustre at best, perhaps because he thinks he doesn’t need them much in 2027, since his strategy appears based only on crippling the opposition parties and forging a new coalition of the south plus northern minorities. He also missed good opportunities to turn the page of negative perception during his recent visits to Katsina and Benue. Rather than being shown in active discussions directly with stakeholders from the entire northwest and northcentral zones, the visits are remembered more by a billboard fiasco, Rarara’s “Omo Ologo” lyrics, and his reluctance to visit Benue in the first place.

All of these bring me to the two-day government-citizen engagement townhall convened by the Sardauna Foundation in Kaduna last week. It is only a first step, but I still see the event as a big win for Tinubu and his government. By accepting the challenge of popular scrutiny of his policies by northern civil society, by sending out the strongest federal delegation possible, and by giving people the opportunity to freely air their concerns directly to top government officials, Tinubu has crafted a new and useful template for deeper public engagement with the north and the rest of the country. How his negative perceptions shift from this point will depend on how well he utilises this new-found template.

Beyond his unwillingness to engage meaningfully with a voting bloc on whose tails he rode to power, Tinubu’s political actions in the north are another sticky point. Tinubu is digging up the old ghosts of divisive religious politics within the northern region and fanning up anew the dangerous rhetoric associated with it, as we saw in some instances in Benue last Tuesday. And this is not to talk of his open political interference in Kano’s emirate tussle. But his policy priorities and actions are even more striking in their disregard of northern feelings. This government has been pumping billions of dollars in borrowed funds for infrastructure projects throughout southern Nigeria, with nowhere near a corresponding attention for the north. Where the north is given attention at all, it tends to be an afterthought following a backlash, as in the cases of Abuja-Kaduna-Kano and the Badagry-Sokoto road projects. Regardless of the level of completion of these projects, the sense of unequal and unfair regional consideration is unmistakable, and is justifiably a major reason for northern sense of betrayal.

In his speech at the Kaduna townhall last week, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Alhaji Bashir Dalhatu the most far-reaching and feasible structural and social development blueprint for Nigeria, not just the north, I have yet read in a single piece. Avoiding politics and focusing solely on policy, he identifies key areas of federal intervention, including security, agriculture, integrated transport infrastructure of rail, road and waterways, electricity, education, health, steel development, and oil exploration. To these, I would add housing.

Yet, it is impossible to read his speech without feeling a deep regret about how and where Buhari and the northern governors failed the north. The north’s 5.6 million votes for Tinubu in 2023, or 64 per cent  his total 8.7 million, was repeated several times by many speakers at that event, but we cannot escape the fact that the north gave Buhari more than 60 million votes in his political career over four consecutive presidential elections to do some of the very things the Wazirin Dutse succinctly listed in his speech. No president can do all of these things for any nation or its regions during even two terms. So, should Tinubu wish to reengage meaningfully with the northern region by way of policy, all he needs to do is to focus on just one or two of the areas the ACF BOT chair mentioned—Ajaokuta steel or the waterways plus the dredging of Rivers Niger and Benue say—and complete them.

Some people have misread the point above to argue that northerners have no right to complain under Tinubu since they did not do so under Buhari who, they say, didn’t do much for them either. This argument is both nonsense and politically useless. It is nonsense first because all Nigerians share and express support or opposition to leaders based on their ethnic, religious and regional affiliations than empirical evidence on policy. Buhari, for example, was excoriated by the southern press for the higher rates of inflation, fuel prices, and foreign exchange under his administration than under former President Jonathan, all of which are true. However, all three indices have gotten worse more than five times under Tinubu in just two years, yet much of the same press now wears gloves in its critical scrutiny.

Moreover, by at least 2020, Buhari’s support in the north had ebbed considerably, which is why his party’s presidential candidate got only 5.6 million votes in 2023, just about one-third of what they did in 2015 and 2019. I also believe the Daily Trust published some of the most intellectually serious and revealing editorial critiques of Buhari’s government throughout. I know that because as chair of the paper’s editorial board and deputy chair of the newsroom for much of Buhari’s second term, I read almost all the editorials and major news stories published by other leading newspapers at the time. It simply isn’t true that northerners were entirely silent under Buhari; and now, they have every right to raise their voices if they feel the Tinubu government has been unfair to them, as people down south have done in this country since even before 1960, often unjustifiably.

Finally, Tinubu’s problems with the north are complicated by the fierce rivalry for present and future favours among the most senior northern politicians within his government and the 19 state governors. This competition for largely personal space has weakened the north’s representatives in both the executive and legislative branches of the federal government. It has also simultaneously strengthened Tinubu’s hand to effectively divide the north and rule it, such that the whole region is the loser. The north must relearn this lesson, but for Tinubu, the election of 2015 has shown us that even northern governors cannot stop an electoral tsunami when the feelings of ordinary voters reach a crescendo. If the President means business with the north, and the ADC coalition means he now must, he would need to build direct bridges with ordinary northern voters in his policies, actions, and communications
