Dauda Musa Komo

By Adesina Soyooye

“It was during Col Komo’s tenure as Military Administrator, Rivers State, that the ‘Ogoni 4′ were gruesomely murdered, and the “Ogoni 9’, including Ken Saro Wiwa, were hanged to death at the Port Harcourt prisons”

A former Military Administrator of Rivers State, Col. Dauda Musa Komo, rtd, is dead.

A native of Zuru, Kebbi State, Komo’s life, ironically, ended in Port Harcourt Rivers State where he held sway as Military Administrator between 1993 and 1994 during the regime of maximum Head of State, Late General Sani Abacha.

Komo, reportedly, slumped in Port Harcourt where he had traveled to on an invitation to  a public function, and died.

He ruled Rivers State during a turbulent period as it was at the time the Ogoni crisis, which stemmed from the Community’s problem with Shell escalated.

It was during his tenure as Military Administrator that four prominent Ogoni sons were gruesomely murdered on 21st May, 1994, at Gokana, Ogoni, while they were at a meeting.

Their grissly murder led to the arrest of the ‘Ogoni 9’, which included Ken Saro Wiwa, an environmentalist, and leader of the Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People, MOSOP, for allegedly, instigating the blood cuddling incident. They were subsequently arraigned before a Special Tribunal, found guilty, and were hanged at the Port Harcourt prisons before their appeal could be heard. Only one of them, Ledum Mitte, a Lawyer was discharged and acquitted.

Komo was a member of NDA 15RC/SS7, and was an illustrious son of Zuru and a gallant Military officer.  He, along with other Military Officers who had held political offices, were  retired in 1999 by President Olusegun Obasanjo at the inception of democracy.

In the run-up to the 2023 Governorship election in Kebbi State, he was in contention under the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, but his ambition fizzled out.

In a condolence message to Zuru Emirate and Komo’s family,  a mourning Senator Bala Ibn Na’Allah stated that: “Col Komo was not only an outstanding Military Officer, but also a beacon of leadership and service to the Zuru Emirate and Nigeria at large. His Death is a profound loss to us all.”

“In Edo, We Don’t Tamper With Local Government Funds”, Boasts Okpebholo

Monday Okpebholo - Edo State Governor
Monday Okpebholo - Edo State Governor

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, on Saturday, May 31, 2025, boasted that his administration, as a matter of policy, does not meddle into the finances of Local Councils.

This is just as he gifted each of the State’s 18 Council Chairmen, a sports  utility vehicle SUV.

The Source reports that the Governor  in October 2024, in concert with the State House of Assembly, controversially suspended all 18 Council Chairmen elected on the platform of the rival Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, citing their failure to account for Council funds as a major reason.

His decision to suspend the elected Council officials came amidst strident opposition from the PDP, and against the advise of the Attorney General, and Minister of Justice Lateef Fagbemi.

While most of the suspended Council chairmen are presently in Court over the development, Governor Okpebholo has vehemently refused to reinstate those that have secured Court  Orders for their return.

Speaking at the occasion of the formal  presentation of the vehicles to the Chairmen held at the State Secretariat in Benin, the Governor accused his predecessor in office of greatly undermining and incapacitating Local Government  administration in the State.

According to him, the vehicles, and his administration’s non-interference in the Council funds, will enable them  effectively discharge their functions as the Third Tier of Government.

He expressed regret that for many years, Council officials were muzzled, intimidated and prevented from performing their constitutional duties, as well as delivering on the people’s mandate by the state Government.

Governor Okpebholo emphasized that his administration will rather perceive the Local Government Areas as partners in the  progress growth and development of the state, rather than as an appendage.

While lamenting that Edo State was taken many steps backward by former Governor Godwin Obaseki, the Governor, however, expressed satisfaction that the situation has remarkably changed within the short period of his regime.

“I want to thank God for making today possible as Council Chairmen in the State, now have the privilege to drive brand new vehicles.

“New things are beginning to happen in Edo state under the watch of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“I know how much you are receiving in the Councils, and we will continue to measure your performance rate to see if it commensurates with what you are receiving.

“My administration does not interfere with your funds and resources.

“Edo will experience more development, even as we compete with Lagos, Abuja, and other frontline States of the Federation.

“The vehicles commissioned today are not for the private use of the Local Government Chairmen, but for the development of the people at the grassroots. I will monitor you to ensure that the right things are done”, the Governor stated.

The State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Lucky Eseigbe, who spoke on behalf of the Council Chairmen, while appreciating the Governor for the  vehicles, lauded him for not tampering with the Council funds.

According to him, this is the first time in the history of Local Council administration in the State, that the State Government will be purchasing official vehicles for Council Chairmen.

While assuring of the readiness of the council officials to put in their best to reciprocate the gesture, he also expressed the optimism that the vehicles will aid them in the discharge of their duties.

Lassa Fever

By Akinwale Kasali

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, NCDC, has disclosed that no fewer than 366 patients diagnosed by medical experts of contracting Lassa fever and meningitis diseases have been confirmed dead by the Federal Government in Ondo State.

The NCDC revealed that among the States, the most affected from the 24 identified by the Federal Government include: Edo, Ondo, and Benue, Kebbi, Katsina, Sokoto, and Jigawa States.

The NCDC made this disclosure on Friday through its official website while highlighting the continued public health challenge posed by these diseases.

According to the Agency, from January 1 to May 18, the centre confirmed 733 cases of Lassa fever from 5,118 suspected infections across 18 states and 95 Local Government Areas.

Within the period under review, it said 141 Lassa fever-related deaths were recorded, representing a case fatality rate of 19.2 per cent.

The NCDC added that in week 20 alone, new infections jumped from three to 13 cases in Edo, Ondo, and Benue states, further spreading the disease.

“The case fatality rate stands at 19.2 per cent, slightly higher than 18.3 per cent in 2024, indicating that one in five people infected is dying, in spite of coordinated national efforts,” the NCDC warned.

It stated that the hotspot states for Lassa fever include Ondo (30 per cent), Bauchi (25 per cent), and Edo (17 per cent), which together account for 72 per cent of all confirmed cases.

The centre said that the disease was hitting young adults hardest, particularly those aged 21 to 30 years, with a nearly equal male-to-female ratio.

It noted that no new infections among healthcare workers were reported in the past week but highlighted a surge in cases and called for heightened vigilance.

The agency said that a multi-sectoral incident management system has been activated to coordinate response efforts nationwide.

On the meningitis front, the NCDC stated that the figures were more alarming than it had expected, saying, from 2,911 suspected cases, 192 have been confirmed and 225 lives lost, translating to a case fatality rate of 7.7 per cent.

The agency said children aged five to 14 were the most affected, with males accounting for 60 per cent of all reported infections.

It stated that the outbreak had reached 24 states and 173 LGAs, with 10 northern states, including Kebbi, Katsina, Sokoto, and Jigawa, reporting 97 per cent of the suspected cases.

In response, the NCDC has activated a national Emergency Operations Centre to coordinate interventions in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health, the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, and development partners.

It said that regular high-level meetings with affected states were ongoing to streamline containment strategies.

“We are providing continuous technical support to high-burden states and reinforcing outbreak preparedness across the country,” the NCDC said.

Lassa fever is a viral haemorrhagic disease transmitted primarily through contact with the urine or faeces of infected rats.

It can also spread from person to person through bodily fluids, contaminated objects, or infected medical equipment.

Symptoms include fever, sore throat, headache, vomiting, muscle pain, and, in severe cases, bleeding from body openings.

Joy Turns To Sorrow As 20 Kano Sportsmen And Women Die In Vehicle Accident

Kano Athletes Die In Fatal Car Crash

By Akinwale Kasali and Ayodele Oni

It was a tragic end to a celebration. Joy turned to sorrow. For days, Sportsmen and women from Kano State were in Abeokuta, Ogun State for the National Sports Festival. On Thursday when it ended, they, along with their counterparts from 35 States of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory, hugged, danced,  celebrated and said goodbye to one another, hoping to see in 2026 in Enugu.

But for twenty from Kano, it turned out a final goodbye. The Kano State Sports vehicle in which they were traveling back to Kano, where they were being waited for – for more celebrations got involved in a fatal accident.

At the last count, 20 of them lay dead, and some others injured thus throwing the Government and people of the  State into

mourning.

They were only about 50 kilometers to Kano when the tragedy  occurred at Dakatsalle town.

The deceased, including a journalist were  among the 35 athletes and officials that left the  venue of the Sports Festival in Ogun State after it was declared closed.

“The accident occurred today, Saturday, at the Dakatsalle Bridge in Kura Local Government Area of the state” a grieving eye witness said.

According to eyewitnesses,  the bus conveying the athletes lost control and plunged into the river under the bridge.

The Chairman of the Kano State Sports Commission, Umar Fagge, confirmed the devastating incident.

He said: “As I am speaking to you now, we have counted 19 bodies, the bus, which was carrying 30 persons, including athletes and officials, fell off the bridge.

“Rescue efforts are ongoing, and the injured have been taken to the Kura General Hospital for medical treatment”.

A former Vice President of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN, Ado Salisu, also confirmed the accident and the number of casualties.

Salisu noted that among the deceased was the son of Salisu Jegu, a sports journalist with Express Radio, who accompanied the team for better publicity during and after the game.

APC Cautions Arthur Eze Over Tinubu; Tells Him “Mind Your Business, You Are Not His Spokesperson”

0
Chief Arthur Eze

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The All Progressive Congress, APC ,at the weekend pointedly told businessman, Prince Arthur Eze, to concentrate on running his business empire rather than assigning himself the role of Presidential spokesman.

The Party’s cautionary note is coming against the backdrop of remarks credited to Eze to the effect that President Bola Tinubu has endorsed the Enugu state Governor Peter Mbah for a second term in office.

While speaking during the occasion of the second year anniversary celebration of the Governor in office on Thursday May, 29, 2025 , Prince Eze informed that Mbah’s  sterling performance  has earned him Presidential accolades and endorsement.

For the records, President  Tinubu is  of the APC while Governor Mbah belongs to the rival Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Curiously, Prince Eze is neither a card carrying member of the two rival platforms, nor a partisan political actor.

However, in a scathing rebuttal, the Enugu State chapter of the APC chided the business mogul for delving into an unsolicited task of speaking for the President.

While emphatically, debunking Eze’s claim of President Tinubu’s endorsement of Mbah for  a second term in office, the Party advised him to refrain from making statements capable of undermining the integrity of both the President and democracy in the country.

In the statement issued by its Publicity Secretary,Titus Ezeagu, the APC urged the public to ignore  Eze’s purported claims  and described it as his “personal opinion driven by self interest rather than political reality.

“Let it be made clear: the President has not made any statement, public or private, endorsing any Governor in any state for a second term, including Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State.

“Prince Arthur Eze is not a member of the APC. He is neither a spokesperson for President Tinubu, nor has he ever played any official role in the President’s campaign or administration.

“We urge Prince Eze to concentrate on his business ventures and allow the democratic process to unfold in accordance with the constitution without resort to spreading cheap propaganda which will put Mr President in bad light – national and international .

“His attempt to prop up Governor Mbah’s anti-people governance using the name of President Tinubu is not only false, but a manifest move to once more undermine the democratic process in Enugu ,and Nigeria in general”, the APC stated.

The party reaffirmed its commitment to evolving into a formidable force, and strong alternative political platform for the disenchanted people of Enugu state.

According to the party, a meaningful endorsement will only come through the constitutionally recognized electoral process with the electorate as the determinant.

The party also expressed its implicit confidence in the ability of the party’s  leadership, ably coordinated by the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Nwakaibe to steer it  towards the path of resilience and ultimate victory.

Fitch Upgrades Fidelity Bank’s National Rating to ‘A+(nga)’, Affirms Long-Term IDR at ‘B’

Fidelity Bank Plc

Global credit rating agency, Fitch Ratings, has affirmed Fidelity Bank Plc’s Long-Term Issuer Default Rating (IDR) at ‘B’ and upgraded its National Long-Term Rating to ‘A+(nga)’ from ‘A(nga)’.

The upgrade, announced on May 29, 2025, reflects the bank’s strengthened capital buffers and improved profitability, signaling continued positive momentum in its performance.

According to Fitch, the rating upgrade is underpinned by Fidelity Bank’s successful capital raise through a rights issue and public offer, as well as a notable improvement in profitability—driven by higher interest income and a stable base of low-cost current and savings deposits.

Commenting on the announcement, Managing Director/CEO of Fidelity Bank, Dr. Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe, said:“This upgrade by Fitch Ratings affirms the resilience of our business model, the strength of our risk management practices, and our unwavering focus on delivering sustainable value to stakeholders. Despite a challenging macroeconomic environment, we have continued to maintain strong asset quality, solid profitability, and ample liquidity. This recognition reinforces our position as one of Nigeria’s most resilient and customer-focused financial institutions.”

One of the key drivers of the improved rating is the bank’s robust capitalization. Fitch reports that Fidelity’s Fitch Core Capital (FCC) ratio rose to 29.9% at the end of 2024—well above the regulatory minimum. The agency also noted that further capital raising efforts are expected to position the bank to meet the ₦500 billion minimum capital requirement for internationally licensed banks before the 2025 deadline.

Fidelity Bank’s market positioning remains strong. As Nigeria’s sixth-largest bank, it commands approximately 5% of total banking sector assets. The bank’s balance sheet is reinforced by a high proportion of low-cost deposits, which accounted for 93% of total deposits as of year-end 2024—among the highest in the Nigerian banking industry.

The affirmation and upgrade by Fitch is expected to enhance investor confidence and support Fidelity’s continued efforts to scale its operations both locally and internationally.

PDP Rehearses Its Obituary In Imo

Collins Chibueze Ughala

By Collins Ughalaa

The People’s Democratic Party in Imo State held a press conference on Wednesday, May 28. The press conference served more as a therapy session for its internal dysfunction than a serious intervention in public discourse. Billed as a reaffirmation of strength, the gathering quickly unravelled into a noisy mix of factional denial, hollow chest-thumping, and malicious attacks on a government that has remained focused on service delivery despite the noise from a drowning minority party, the PDP.

  1. The PDP began by insisting that no factions exist within its Imo State chapter. But this claim collapses under the slightest scrutiny. On April 28, 2025, a group aligned with lawmaker Ugochinyere proclaimed a parallel leadership in Akokwa, exposing the deep cracks within the party. If there were no divisions, why would this announcement attract the kind of attention and condemnation the party is now trying to deflect?
  1. The PDP’s desperation to present a united front has instead confirmed the rot within. That party factions now gather in village parlours to announce so-called interim leaders shows how far the party has fallen from even a pretence of internal cohesion or institutional discipline.
  1. The attempt to assert that Senator Samuel Anyanwu is both the undisputed leader of the party in Imo and the unchallenged National Secretary is laughable. His tenure has been riddled with legal ambiguities. He clung to his seat during the 2023 Imo gubernatorial election, bizarrely described unfavourable court rulings as distractions, and operated with the force of might rather than legitimacy. His role as National Secretary remains disputed, and the Imo PDP’s insistence on his unshakable authority only deepens the party’s credibility problem.
  1. This same shameless PDP that claims Imo State is a PDP stronghold was rejected by the people in 2007, just eight years after it ascended the throne at the Government House. It fell from its dream of governing the state for at least 60 years.

In 1999, Nigeria returned to democracy after decades of military rule. One of the major political parties at the time was the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The PDP won the presidential election and secured a majority of the 36 states. In Imo State, it produced Chief Achike Udenwa, who also won re-election in 2003. Across Nigeria, the PDP appeared invincible. In Imo, it looked even more entrenched. But while the party lost power at the centre in 2015, it lost Imo much earlier, just eight years in, due to internal contradictions, poor governance, and power play.

The PDP’s claim ultimately proves hollow. The party has faced severe challenges in regaining power in the state. It was shocked to the marrow when it lost to the fledgling Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA) in 2007. That blow has proved too much for the PDP to recover from. In 2019, it tried to force itself on the people through the backdoor, but it was kicked out once more. The party has not won its internal battles, yet it pretends to be ready to win the 2027 governorship election. A tall order, isn’t it?

  1. The PDP’s claim that the Uzodimma administration has destroyed education in Imo is detached from reality. Under Governor Uzodimma, the government has recruited over 6,000 teachers, many deployed to rural schools. The administration has also launched massive renovations of classroom blocks and improved teacher welfare.

The Uzodimma administration has delivered two new universities: the K.O. Mbadiwe University, Ogboko, and the University of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, Umuagwo. The government secured the upgrading of the Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education to the Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education. It also secured the upgrading of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) to the Federal University Teaching Hospital. These are feats previous PDP administrations deemed unimaginable.

Beyond that, the government established a brand-new polytechnic in Omuma, Oru East LGA, and restored accreditation to critical courses in Imo State University, including Law and Medicine, leading to the graduation of thousands of students who had been stranded for over a decade.

If PDP governments had prioritised service over profligacy, Imo would have been in better shape by 2020. Still, Governor Uzodimma did not trade blame. He cleaned up the sector, restored hope, and ended the perennial strike actions that crippled education. The sector may still need work, but it is far from the graveyard the PDP describes.

  1. On infrastructure, the PDP falsely claimed that the World Bank–Umuguma and Nekede–Ihiagwa roads were re-awarded for the second time. What they failed to mention is that the original contracts were terminated due to poor performance and re-awarded through due process. Only a responsible government would take that course of action.

The PDP lives in denial; denial is part of its DNA. How else does one explain the party’s inability to acknowledge the massive infrastructure transformation under Governor Uzodimma, which earned him the Vanguard Infrastructure Governor of the Year Award?

The PDP’s secretariat stands on the Owerri–Okigwe Road, reconstructed by this same administration, including the once-impossible Ekemele section. Yet the party denies the road exists. PDP leaders use the Owerri–Orlu Road, Owerri–Egbu–Mbaise–Obowo–Umuahia Road, Port Harcourt Road, and over 200 others constructed by this government, yet still pretend they don’t exist. They see the Assumpta Flyover but act blind. What won’t the PDP deny?

  1. The party’s manufactured outrage over the national Hajj flag-off at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport reeks of religious intolerance and political mischief. It failed to mention that Imo hosted the 2023 Easter Christian pilgrimage flag-off and sponsored over 1,000 pilgrims to Israel and Jordan. The government is also sponsoring Christian pilgrims again this year. The PDP’s selective outrage reveals what many Nigerians already suspect: it will exploit religion if it offers even a short-term political advantage.
  1. The PDP further alleged that Imo does not pay the N70,000 minimum wage. That is false. Imo was one of the first states to begin implementation of the new wage regime following the Federal Government’s announcement. Salary harmonisation is ongoing, and civil servants have begun receiving adjusted pay. The PDP’s distortion is a calculated attempt to sow confusion where progress is being made.
  1. The PDP also accused the government of violating the rule of law in the appointment of the former Acting Chief Judge. Yet it was Governor Uzodimma who swiftly complied with the NJC’s directive to reverse the appointment, even before any court action was initiated. That sense of institutional respect is foreign to a party led by a man who dismissed court rulings as distractions and treated judicial outcomes as political noise.
  1. This is a party whose internal lawlessness, judicial contempt, and factional violence are open secrets. Its leaders operate without regard for procedure and invent narratives to mask failure. The PDP’s bitterness at Governor Uzodimma’s calm and lawful response to the NJC directive is obvious. They simply do not understand what dignified compliance looks like.
  1. As for the economy, the PDP makes blanket accusations of mismanagement without offering a single data point. Under Uzodimma, Imo has witnessed a surge in private investment, infrastructure upgrades, and a revitalised SME sector supported by targeted interventions. The dredging of Oguta Lake, the opening of new industrial clusters, and the seamless rollout of digital land administration reforms are examples of real progress that speak louder than press conference platitudes.
  1. In referencing allocations and fiscal flows, the PDP offered no audited records, no budget figures, and no credible breakdown. That is fiction, not oversight. A party genuinely committed to accountability would engage with facts, not bandy billions around like birthday souvenirs.
  1. Our roads, schools, and public institutions are improving, not collapsing. That progress offends the PDP because it undermines their only campaign strategy: discredit and deflect. But no lie can erase constructed roads, modernised institutions, or civil servants and pensioners who now receive their pay without delay.
  1. It is telling that the PDP has transitioned from contesting ideas to peddling chaos. This is the same party that expressed hostility towards Muslims during the Hajj flag-off at an airport that now proudly operates international flights, thanks to Uzodimma’s infrastructural investments. Their reaction was not principled critique: it was sectarian resentment dressed as politics.
  1. When an opposition party becomes noted for its lies rather than its leadership, more feared for its infighting than respected for its integrity, it is no longer relevant to the democratic process. The PDP’s press conference was not a strategic meeting. It was the dress rehearsal for its obituary.

Aiyedatiwa Running Illegal Administration – Ondo PDP

0
Lucky Aiyedatiwa

By Ayodele Oni

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State has threatened to seek legal redress if after 14 days, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa refuse to properly constitute his cabinet.

Aiyedatiwa’s administration is 100 days old having been inaugurated in February.

PDP noted that it amounts to executive rascality for the governor to be operating with just two commissioners, that he uses to award questionable contracts.

The governor, after his inauguration appointed finance and attorney general to kickstart the administration.

The opposition party, in a statement on Saturday, signed by Leye Igbabo Director of Media And Publicity, stated that “The Peoples Democratic Party Ondo State Chapter wishes to express its utmost displeasure against the Governor of Ondo State, Hon Lucky Aiyedatiwa, over his continued lack of transparency in governance, which accounts for his refusal to properly constitute his cabinet in the last 90 days.

“Apart from the fact the Governor is already running foul of the law, specifically section 192(6) of the 1999 Constitution (as altered) which stipulates that the Governor MUST choose his cabinet members within the sixty days in office after his swearing-in, the Governor has equally failed the moral test of inclusive governance which is the hallmark of participatory democracy.

“Our Party believes very firmly that the unwillingness of the Governor to properly constitute his cabinet stems from his selfish desire to continue manipulating the system to feather his own nest.

“This is evident in the vexatious awards of new contracts without properly engaging and robustly debating the proposal with full cabinet members, chosen from across the Local Governments of the State as envisaged by the constitution.

“This act of marginalization perpetrated against the unrepresented Local Governments by the Governor, which is also in violation of Sec.14, sub. (2c)&(4), has unfortunately created an avenue for the Governor to misappropriate, misdirect and mismanage public funds to serve his personal interest.

“Our Party finds the latest award of 32 units of a four-bedroom presidential buildings intended to accommodate cabinet members, as not only grossly misplaced priority, but cruelly and massively inflated for personal aggrandizement.

“The award of contract for the so-called upgrading and enhancement of the landscape of Chief Reuben Fasoranti Park is not only a reckless and mindless misappropriation and mismanagement of public funds, but colossally injurious to the attached name of our living legend, Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, who has been living a life of modesty and impactful service to humanity.

“We are yet to know what parameters the Governor used in arriving at a whopping sum of N281,000,000.00 million naira for the construction of just a unit of the four-bedroom terrace presidential building in Ondo State, which amounts to N8,168,423,901.77 Billion for the total 32 units of the four-bedroom presidential buildings.

“It is equally disgusting, disturbing and unkind of the governor to attempt to mesmerize and hypnotize the public with crude nomenclature and wicked terminology of “upgrading and vertical enhancement of landscape” which is only intended to vertically fleece away a humongous N3,687,989,927.78 Billion of public funds.

“The Governor simply took undue advantage of an improperly constituted cabinet to commit this unpardonable atrocity against humanity.

“Under the previous administrations, the status of the Internally Generated Revenues (IGRs) and Federal monthly allocations from the Federation accounts to the Ondo State Government were clearly shown and known.

“But under this deceitful administration, no one knows what the State is specifically getting from the Federation account on monthly basis neither is the internally generated revenue known by any other person except the Governor and his Commissioner for Finance.

“We certainly, can no longer tolerate the Governor’s executive rascality and excesses in governance.

“Our Party does not only consider these actions as a gross abuse of office but also a flagrant violation of the constitution that demands legal actions.

“We, therefore, call on the Governor to show transparency in governance and immediately make known to the public the runnings of government, as the government belongs to the people, and the people also deserve to know how the government is being run on their behalf.

“We also strictly advise the Governor to reverse and revoke the outrageous and heavily padded contract awards in the overall interest of the public and for the sake of posterity.

“We are by this statement, alerting the Governor of our Party’s readiness to institute legal actions against his administration, after fourteen working days from today, if he refuses and/or fails to properly constitute his cabinet as mandated by the constitution, as well as his refusal and/or failure to reverse and revoke the irritating and infuriating contract awards herein stated above.”

Nigeria Now Has 35 Million Catholics – The Faith is Shifting to the Global South

0
Tony Onyima

By Tony Onyima, Ph.D.

According to the 2025 Pontifical Yearbook released by the Vatican’s Central Office of Church Statistics, Nigeria has emerged as Africa’s second-largest Catholic nation with 35 million adherents. This milestone signals a profound demographic and spiritual shift in global Catholicism.

With 35 million Catholics, Nigeria now accounts for more than 12% of Africa’s total Catholic population, which has grown to 281 million, representing 20% of the global Catholic community. Only the Democratic Republic of Congo ranks higher on the continent, with 55 million Catholics.

To appreciate the weight of these numbers, consider this: Nigeria alone now has more Catholics than Italy, France, and Spain individually – countries once seen as the heartlands of the faith. This is a vivid reminder that the centre of gravity for global Catholicism is shifting decisively southward.

Globally, the Catholic Church boasts 1.406 billion members. Brazil has 182 million Catholics, comprising 13% of the global population. Yet, Africa’s role as the faith’s growth engine is becoming impossible to ignore. With every passing year, one in every five Catholics in the world is African – a far cry from just a few decades ago.

While the Church in Europe grapples with secularisation and a shrinking priesthood, Africa is surging with vitality. The number of Catholic priests in Africa rose by 2.7%, bucking the global trend, which saw a modest decline of -0.2%. Today, Africa is home to 54,944 Catholic priests, forming 13.5% of the worldwide priesthood.

The growth is mirrored in the rising number of bishops on the continent. Africa’s share of the global episcopacy increased from 13.8% to 14.2%, reaching 771 bishops – men who will shape the theology, culture, and politics of the Church in decades to come.

The implications are profound for Nigeria. With 35 million Catholics – more than the entire population of Ghana – Nigeria’s Catholic Church is significant and influential. Its bishops play a growing role in Vatican diplomacy. Its seminaries are full. Its lay movements are vibrant. And its clergy are increasingly being dispatched as missionaries to ageing parishes in Europe and North America.

Nigeria’s Catholic growth is not occurring in isolation. Other African countries with rapidly expanding Catholic populations include Uganda, Tanzania, and Kenya – part of a belt of faith stretching across sub-Saharan Africa.

The Church’s global numbers tell a story of renewal and challenge. While the Americas still hold the largest regional share of Catholics at 47.8%, and Europe retains 20.4%, Africa’s 20% is set to increase in the coming years. Asia, led by the Philippines, has 93 million Catholics, and India, with 23 million, holds 11%. Oceania accounts for just 0.78%.

Regarding ecclesiastical infrastructure, the Church now has 3,041 jurisdictions – dioceses, archdioceses, eparchies, prefectures, and vicariates – showing its vast global footprint. The number of bishops worldwide has increased from 5,353 to 5,430.

However, the number of seminarians worldwide— a key predictor of future clergy— declined from 108,481 to 106,495. Again, Africa stands apart: its seminarian population rose by 1.1%, from 34,541 to 34,924, meaning the continent alone contributes one-third of all global seminarians.

The number of religious brothers and sisters – once the heartbeat of Catholic education and healthcare – has dropped globally from 599,228 to 589,423. Yet Africa again tells a different story. The continent saw an increase of 2.2% and now contributes 82,519 religious men and women, or 14% of the global total.

Permanent deacons, a growing cadre within the Church’s pastoral ministry, increased worldwide by 2.6%, from 50,150 to 51,433.

As the global Church wrestles with cultural transformation, declining vocations in the West, and calls for reform, Africa, particularly Nigeria, represents hope and challenge. The raw numbers are unambiguous. Growth is no longer happening in Rome, Paris, or New York. It’s happening in Lagos, Kinshasa, Nairobi, and Kampala.

If demographics are destiny, then Nigeria’s place at the table of Catholic influence is no longer negotiable. The Nigerian Catholic Church is not merely growing; it is ascending, evangelising, and recalibrating what it means to be Catholic in the 21st century.

In the next generation, Nigerian priests may keep churches open in Berlin or Boston as vocations dry up in Europe and America. Nigerian bishops may shape synodal processes in Rome. And Nigerian laypeople, in their tens of millions, will carry the torch of a global faith into the future.
