Court Convicts Ex-Power Minister Over N33.8bn Fraud, Blames Him For Epileptic Power Supply

Mamman Saleh

By Ayodele Oni

A governorship aspirant in Taraba state, Mr Saleh Mamman has been found guilty in 12 counts of fraud and money laundering, charges preferred against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Mamman, also a former Minister of Power, was convicted in absentia on Thursday by the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja.

The court, in a judgment delivered by Justice James Omotosho, said it was satisfied that the anti-graft agency had successfully established the former Minister’s culpability beyond reasonable doubt.

The court convicted him on all grounds of the charge marked FHC/ABJ/CR/273/2024.

Mamman, who served in the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, was found complicit in the illegal diversion of public funds totalling about ₦33.8 billion.

The court found that he made a cash payment of $655,700 (equivalent to ₦200 million) for landed property in Abuja, without recourse to a financial institution.

He was also found guilty of criminal breach of trust in relation to funds released by the federal government for the Mambilla and Zungeru Hydroelectric Power Plant projects.

The court noted that most of the funds were siphoned through Bureau de Change operators (BDCs), who converted the money into foreign currencies and handed it over to the defendant.

“The evidence of the prosecution is overwhelming as against the scanty and almost absent defence of the defendant.

“The defendant did not offer any credible evidence to rebut the prosecution’s case,” Justice Omotosho held.

The trial judge decried that the defendant, as Minister of Power, was not bothered about leaving a lasting legacy.

“Rather than creating a legacy to tackle the epileptic power supply in the country, the defendant was living large at the expense of ordinary citizens.

“Little wonder that Nigerians have remained in darkness till today,” the judge added.

Meanwhile, the defendant was absent when he was convicted by the court.

Consequently, the court deferred his sentence, even as the EFCC applied for a warrant of arrest to be issued against him.

A lawyer, Mr. Mohammed Ahmed, who announced his appearance for the defendant, told the court that since last Tuesday when the notice of the scheduled judgment was issued, the defendant’s whereabouts had remained unknown.

He said the defendant’s personal assistant later disclosed that he was sick.

The defence lawyer’s spirited efforts to persuade the court to defer the judgment to a later date failed.

The trial judge referenced news items indicating that the defendant had been actively involved in political activities, having purchased a form to contest the governorship election in Taraba State.

On his part,  EFCC’s lawyer, Mr. Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, urged the court to proceed with the judgment, insisting there was no reasonable justification for the defendant’s absence.

“My Lord should go ahead. If the judgment is in his favour, we know what to do. If it is against him, we also know what to do,” the prosecution counsel added.

Mamman was arrested in 2021, about four months after he was removed from office by ex-President Buhari.

The EFCC produced 17 witnesses who testified before the court and tendered 43 exhibits before closing its case.

The agency, among other things, alleged that he conspired with ministry staff to divert about ₦22bn meant for the Zungeru and Mambilla Hydro Electric Power projects.

The anti-graft agency said its investigations revealed that the suspect used the funds to acquire choice assets, both within and outside the country.

The “Onuku” Called Kenneth Okonkwo

Kenneth Okonkwo
Kenneth Okonkwo

By Valentine Obienyem

Honestly, I had resolved not to speak or write about Mr. Kenneth Okonkwo. I had, in fact, given up on him entirely. In my own estimation, I had placed him in a category even lower than what I have come to describe as the “Joe tribe.”

For clarity, we have never accused members of the Joe tribe of being useless. Rather, our concern is that they follow one man so unquestioningly that they have surrendered independent judgment. This tendency often blinds them to fairness, even in their dealings with their own people, where one would ordinarily expect understanding and restraint.

Indeed, the Joe tribe ranks higher than Kenneth Okonkwo in one important respect: they are predictable. One can reasonably anticipate their position on any issue. Once PBAT is involved, they will simultaneously pretend to preach Igbo unity and the pursuit of an Igbo presidency, while insisting – without contradiction – that PBAT alone is qualified to occupy that office.

Kenneth Okonkwo, on the other hand, like Reno Omokiri and Bwara defies such predictability. His positions shift constantly; they are fluid, uncertain, and often difficult to pin down. One is left wondering where he truly stands on any given matter.

If I had decided not to write about him, why then this sudden volte-face? The answer lies in a conversation I had this evening with a seasoned and highly respected journalist. I often call him to exchange views on the state of affairs. As we discussed current developments, he assessed figures such as Mr. Oseloka Obaze, Senator Ben Obi, Senator Victor Umeh, and others with clarity and satisfaction.

At the end of the conversation, I asked him, almost as an afterthought: “What about Kenneth Okonkwo?”

His response was immediate and dismissive. He advised me to forget about him entirely, describing him simply as “Onuku.” According to him, Okonkwo is merely making noise, oblivious to the deeper political currents at play. In his view, his role is limited to saying whatever his patrons require of him, in exchange for compensation. This description raises an important question: what exactly does Onuku mean?

For the benefit of our non-Igbo readers, it is best explained by Prof. Okey Ikechukwu, who has written extensively on the subject:

“One of the most invidious, most reprehensibly offensive, and roundly disgusting of these masquerades is ‘Onuku.’ The name simply means ‘fool,’ or ‘the fool.’ This masquerade has the form of a man. But what a wretch of a man he represents! Onuku embodies and symbolises degenerate manhood. It is the very worst type of man anyone could possibly hope to see or imagine.

Undignified, unwilling to take part in open, manly contests, a wielder of unearned titles, and a winner of wrestling contests where he either had no challengers or where he first neutralised his opponents by either poisoning or by violating the Rules of Engagement and compromising the umpires. Such a man lives, but no one really knows his means of livelihood. He pays people for loyalty and does not understand the meaning of truth, service, and selflessness.

And Igboland  has had political “Onukus” prancing all over the place for some time now. But back to the masquerade called “Onuku”

His shabbiness is legendary. His looks, in facial features, are undisguisedly repulsive. Its total lack of dignity, grace, and refinement stands out in abject repugnance. Totally without any redeeming feature, Onuku’s costume is offensive, dull, drab, and dreary in every way. The ‘face’ wears a permanent and abominably lecherous leer. The nose runs. The tongue droops, hanging from one side of the mouth, as if it would drop to the ground at any moment. The steps are purposeless. The gait is unsteady. The general movement, considered for a full-grown man, is wishy-washy. The bearing is annoyingly wobbly. The carriage is beggarly. The sagging shoulders suggest everything despicable you can think of in a man.

“Onuku” never walks in a straight line, no! He also does not walk with the sure and firm steps of a healthy or bold man. This masquerade will rather continuously enact the zigzag path of a drunkard as it walks, to the irritation and annoyance of observers. Worse still, he is never accompanied by drummers or assistants.

Valentine Obienyem
Valentine Obienyem

“Onuku” offers no cheery entertainment of any sort, does not sing, does not dance, does not try to amuse anyone, and does not even ask for money, the way some masquerades do. So, what does Onuku ever really offer?

Watch this masquerade enter the venue of any event and you will throw up your hands in dismay and consternation. Never through the popular pathway or entrance—mbanu! Sneaking into the community square from nearby farms or bushes, unnoticed, is his ken.

Watch him meander to where unsuspecting women are absorbed in the celebrations. See how “Onuku” will, quietly and without warning – at least none of the women will notice on time – inflict hugs and all manner of disconcerting molestations on his unlucky victims.

The only masquerade you would sometimes find receiving beatings from, or getting involved in fights with, women is “Onuku”: a symbol of debauchery, degenerate manhood, and the profane.

This masquerade often made the job of mothers who wished to keep their rascally children on the slippery path of moral rectitude easy. An exasperated mother may rebuke her boy by asking whether he wishes to grow up and become like “Onuku.” It always worked like magic. A shudder would sometimes even accompany many a boy’s emphatic “no” to such a query from his mother. Some boys would burst into tears at the very thought of becoming like “Onuku.” Many a child thus queried may even need to be consoled and petted for a long time thereafter.

Most pregnant women would do anything to avoid setting their eyes on Onuku throughout the duration of their pregnancy. Why? There was the belief that pregnant women should generally avoid bad and abominable things during the period of their pregnancy so as not to give birth to malformed or evil children. Yes, mothers dreaded the thought of giving birth to a creature so wretched, so despicable, and so degenerate in appearance, behaviour, character, and spirit as ‘Onuku’ ‘Onuku’ is just ‘Onuku.’”

In the final analysis, the frightening   similarity between Kenneth Okonkwo and the figure “Onuku”lies not merely in inconsistency, but in a deeper absence of conviction and steadiness in public conduct. Like “Onuku”, he appears unmoored from principle – drifting from one position to another without a clear anchor. A striking example is his posture after the 2023 election, when he dismissed Atiku Abubakar, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and Peter Obi, arguing that the country needed an entirely new set of leaders. Yet, not long after, he began promoting Atiku – the very figure he had so recently set aside. Such abrupt reversals reinforce the image of a man whose steps, like those of Onuku, lack direction and firmness. Where one expects consistency and clarity, there is instead a pattern of zigzagging positions, shaped less by conviction than by shifting convenience. Yesterday, Peter was an Angel of Light and descended to become the devil. As soon as he joined the ADC, he became an Angel once more. Today, after joining NDC, he degenerated to a devil again. Like “ Onuku” your beliefs are determined by the fluidity of the moment.

In the end, Onuku is not merely a masquerade but a moral symbol. He stands as a warning against a life devoid of principle, dignity, and purpose. Wherever such traits appear in public life, the name “Onuku” readily comes to mind.

Aisha Yesufu Challenges Ireti Kingibe To FCT Senatorial Seat, Dumps ADC For NDC

By Adesina Soyooye

In addition to dealing with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike’s threat that she would never be re-elected to the Senate, Ireti Kingibe, the Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory, will now, also, deal with Activist Aisha Yesufu.

On Wednesday, May 6, 2026, the very vocal and blunt Yesufu not only dumped the African Democratic Congress, ADC,   for the Nigeria  Democratic Congress, NDC, she declared that she would run for the Senatorial seat of the FCT in 2027.

Yesufu made this disclosure in a statement she posted on her X handle. Her decision, she said, stems from her clearer understanding of Nigeria’s future and her continued alignment with former presidential hopeful, Peter Obi.

Recall that Obi had, also, a few days ago,  defected to the NDC.

Yesufu, who was a co-founder of #Bringbackourgirls following the abduction of Chibok Girls during the Goodluck Jonathan Administration wrote:

Senator Ireti Kingibe
Senator Ireti Kingibe

“The next couple of days will define the future of this nation. This deeper understanding is why I resigned from the ADC to join the NDC as I follow the leadership of Peter Obi, who today embodies the hope and aspiration of a Nigeria that works.

“When I give my word, I keep it. My decision to support HE Peter Obi first led me to the ADC. To continue to honour the promise, I am joining the NDC.

“This time I am joining the NDC not just as a member but as one running for the FCT Senatorial seat.

“I was fortunate to work with great and amazing people whose goal was a better country. I am grateful for the opportunity to have served as sub-committee chair, deputy committee chair, and secretary at various levels.”

It is not yet known who Wike would back for the seat – an APC or PDP Candidate. Whoever, the contest for the 2027 FCT Senatorial seat will be tough.

Meningitis: 34 Persons Confirmed Dead Following  Outbreak In Sokoto

0
Ahmad Aliyu - Governor of Sokoto State

By Ayodele Oni

Nine Local Government Areas in Sokoto State are being ravaged by meningitis, which has led to the death of no fewer than 34 persons.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) had earlier raised an alert over a potential surge in meningitis, heat-related illness risks, and heat exhaustion across 12 states in Nigeria.

The states identified as high-risk include Niger, Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, Kano, Yobe, Jigawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Borno, and Adamawa.

According to the agency, heat index forecasts indicate dangerously high temperatures spanning the northern, central, and southern parts of the country.

In the north, temperatures are expected to climb between 40°C and 45°C, while central regions may experience 35°C to 38°C. Southern areas are projected to record temperatures ranging from 33°C to 35.

The Sokoto State Commissioner for Health, Dr Faruk Abubakar-Wurno, who disclosed this to journalists in Sokoto, revealed that 254 suspected cases had so far been recorded, with the outbreak spreading across several communities.

According to him, most of the victims died at home before government intervention reached the affected areas.

Some residents were said to have linked the illness to spiritual attacks and mysterious circumstances, resulting in delays in seeking proper medical treatment.

As part of efforts to curtail the outbreak, the commissioner disclosed  that isolation centres had been established in Dogondaji and Kurawa communities in Tambuwal and Sabon Birni local government areas.

He added that all 201 patients treated at government health facilities had been discharged.

The affected local government areas include Dange-Shuni with 26 cases, Kebbe (16), Shagari (51), Tambuwal (34), Wamakko (60), Sabon Birni (63), Bodinga (2), Kware (2) and Gada (1).

Abubakar-Wurno revealed that 24 samples were sent for laboratory analysis, out of which 16 returned negative, while eight were confirmed positive for meningitis.

He described meningitis as a serious infection affecting the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord, noting that it spreads through respiratory droplets, especially in crowded and poorly ventilated environments.

The commissioner advised residents to sleep in well-ventilated rooms or outside their houses where possible to reduce the risk of transmission, adding that extreme heat conditions often worsen the disease.

He further explained that children between the ages of one and 15 were the most vulnerable, while overcrowding and the dry season winds had significantly increased the risk of transmission, posing serious public health concerns across northern states.

Abubakar-Wurno said the state government had intensified disease surveillance, laboratory testing and the provision of medications, while also strengthening laboratory capacity for improved detection and confirmation of cases.

Court Recognizes Bayero, Sanusi As Emirs – Fmr Gov. Ganduje

Emirs Aminu Ado Bayero and Mohammad Sanusi II

By Ayodele Oni

Former Governor of Kano State, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has said that his reference to Muhammadu Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano and Chairman of the Kano State Council of Chiefs, was just for official protocol.

According to him, this did not suggest that he endorsed Sanusi As Emir saying that the matter was still before the Court.

The clarification comes after Ganduje, during the swearing-in ceremony of Deputy Governor Murtala Sule Garo, was seen greeting Sanusi and addressing him with his full traditional title, a gesture that attracted applause from guests and dignitaries present at the event.

The former Governor had dethroned the 16th Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II in 2020 and installed Emir Aminu Ado Bayero, the first son of the late Emir Abdullahi Ado Bayero.

In a statement issued by his former Commissioner for Information and Chief of Staff, Muhammad Garba, Ganduje stressed that the matter surrounding the Kano emirship dispute remains subject to judicial determination.

He maintained that only the Supreme Court of Nigeria has the final authority to decide Sanusi’s status in the ongoing legal battle.

He further explained that any eventual outcome of the case would be implemented in line with the rule of law by the Kano State Government under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

Ganduje dismissed claims that his remarks amounted to an endorsement, explaining that his reference to Sanusi’s traditional title was purely an act of protocol and respect at a formal gathering.

Abdulahi Ganduje - APC Chairman
Dr. Abdulahi Ganduje

“It is important to clarify that what happened was simply an expression of respect in a public setting and should not be interpreted as an endorsement.”

He cautioned that the emirship tussle remains subjudice and warned against public commentary that could amount to contempt of court, recalling that the Court of Appeal had earlier directed all parties to maintain the status quo pending a final verdict.

Ganduje also noted that the existing legal framework still recognises Aminu Ado Bayero as the 15th Emir of Kano and Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 14th Emir, pending the final decision of the Supreme Court, which is expected to resolve the matter in due course.

He added that, as a former governor, he has no constitutional authority to endorse or reject any claimant to the emirship stool, stressing that such powers rest solely with the judiciary and the state government.

“If Anybody Goes Ahead To Open Illegal Office In The Name Of PDP In Abuja, I Will Seal It” – FCT Wike

Nyesom Wike - FCT Minister
Nyesom Wike

By Ayodele Oni

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barr. Nyesom Wike, on Wednesday stated that a faction opposing the party’s recognised leadership lacks legal standing and can not lawfully operate the affairs of the party.

A parallel national executive of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), had emerged as the factional National Executive Committee of the party backed by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, appointed a 13-member Caretaker Committee headed by Tanimu Turaki, SAN, as chairman.

The decision was reached on Monday during the faction’s 103rd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja.

The motion was moved by the Edo State PDP Chairman, Tony Aziegbemi, and seconded by the party’s ex officio member, Clement Fagboyede from Ondo state.

The action was coming after the Supreme Court finally nullified the Ibadan Oyo state convention of the PDP held last year during which Turaki emerged as chairman.

Speaking during a live media chat with journalists on Wednesday in Abuja, Wike accused some party leaders of misleading Nigerians and violating court judgments in the lingering leadership crisis rocking the PDP.

He challenged rival factions in the PDP to open an official party bank account and secretariat if they truly believe they control the opposition party’s structure.

The former Rivers State governor insisted that “You cannot continue to deceive Nigerians. If they are sure they are the authentic leadership of the PDP, let them open an official PDP account and tell party members to pay nomination fees into it.”

He specifically challenged  Taminu Turaki, SAN, and other leaders of the rival camp to test their claims by opening a bank account in the name of the PDP.

“Let Turaki, as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, open an account for the PDP. Let them announce it publicly for members who want to contest elections. That day, you will see what will happen,” he stated.

Wike argued that no bank would recognise such an account because the faction allegedly lacks the legally recognised party structure and documentation required to operate.

“That bank will be in trouble because to open such an account, you must provide the party’s authentic documents and recognised leadership. Who has those documents?”, he queried.

The FCT minister also warned against attempts to establish what he described as illegal party offices, vowing that any action capable of causing a breakdown of law and order in Abuja would not be tolerated.

“If anybody goes ahead to open an illegal office in the name of the PDP in Abuja, I will seal it. I will not allow any breach of peace because my duty is to maintain law and order in the Federal Capital Territory,” he said.

Wike maintained that court judgments had already settled the dispute over the PDP leadership and convention issues, accusing some actors of twisting judicial pronouncements for political convenience.

“People should stop deceiving Nigerians. The judgments are clear. You cannot ignore court decisions and begin to create parallel structures,” he added.

The minister further dismissed claims that the Supreme Court ruling favoured the rival faction, insisting that the legal processes and decisions available supported his position and that of the recognised party leadership.

According to him, attempts to reinterpret the judgments outside the established legal context were aimed at confusing party members and the public.

Wike said he remained a committed member of the PDP and was only defending what he described as constitutional order and due process within the party.

Court To Hear Mark, Nafiu Gombe ADC Leadership Case May 8

David Mark - ADC Chairman
David Mark

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

An Abuja Federal High Court has scheduled Friday, May 8, 2026, for  hearing in the motion on notice filed by Nafiu Bala Gombe challenging the Senator David Mark-led National Executive Committee, NEC, of the opposition Coalition platform the African Democratic Congress ADC.

The Supreme Court had on April 30, while ruling on an interlocutory appeal filed by Mark, ordered parties to return to the trial Court for the continuation of proceedings in the suit filed by Bala-Gombe in 2025.

The Supreme Court, while nullifying the Court of Appeal’s earlier ruling which ordered parties to maintain the status quo ante bellum, however, affirmed the Appallate Court’s  order for parties to return to the trial Court for the hearing and determination of the substantive suit.

The hearing notices were said to have been served on all parties in the motion on notice before Honourable Justice Emeka Nwite on Wednesday, May, 6, 2026.

The service of the notices followed an application letter filed by Luka Haruna SAN, Counsel to the plaintiff (Bala-Gombe) dated May 5 ,and addressed to the Deputy Registrar, Federal High Court Abuja.

We, Robert Emukposeruo SAN, Lukman O. Fagbemi SAN, and Lukas Musa Haruna, SAN, still representing Hon Nafiu Bala Gombe, the plaintiff in the above matter pending before His Lordship, Hon. Justice Emeka Nwite of Court No 8.

“Following the dismissal of the interlocutory appeal filed by Senator David Mark by the Supreme Court of Nigeria on April 30,2026, we hereby apply for a date for the accelerated hearing of this matter in accordance with the judgment of the court of Appeal.

“Find enclosed herewith, the judgment of the Court of Appeal, which ordered for the accelerated hearing of this case.

“We shall be most grateful if you bring this application to the notice of His Lordship for his prompt action”, the letter reads.

In his originating summons, Bala-Gombe is praying the court for an order restraining Mark, and other members of his ADC National Executive Committee NEC from parading themselves in those capacity.

Gombe had argued that the emergence of Senator Mark and Rauf Aregbesola as National Chairman and National Secretary respectively were in complete violation of the constitution of the ADC ,as a political partynumber.

He, therefore, sought an order declaring him as the rightful National Chairman of the ADC after the resignation of the former Chairman Chief Ralph Nwosu.

The ADC, Nwosu, Rauf Aregbesola the National Secretary, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, are  listed as respondents in the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1819/2025.

The leadership case was one of the reasons cited by Peter Obi for his decision to exit the ADC.

Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, announced his resignation from the ADC on Sunday May 3, 2026.

He has since joined forces with the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, alongside the leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

There are growing fears that the plethora of court cases around the ADC, may severe disrupt its activities ahead of the 2027 polls.

Imole SSCE Scholarship Award programme

By Ayodele Oni

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke said the Imole SSCE Scholarship Award programme is aimed at raising a generation that will not walk in darkness.

The governor pointed out that his administration honours excellence from the grassroots to the peak, and commended the Ministry of Education, teachers, and school administrators for shaping minds and building character.

The governor was speaking at the presentation of the maiden edition of Imole SSCE Scholarship Award Ceremony organised by Electronic Collections Group (ECG) in collaboration with the Osun State Ministry of Education, at the Olagunsoye Oyinlola Hall, Osun State University, Osogbo on Wednesday.

On the forthcoming governorship election in the state, Adeleke, urged the people to shun vote buying.

Addressing the audience including global government chairmen elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, school administrators, teachers, students and relatives of the awardees, Adeleke said, “My people of Osun state, Osun is at an unusual time ahead of the August 15 election. Those who hijacked and diverted over N300 billion Osun local government funds are desperate.

“I charge Osun people to reject Greek gifts, to shun proceeds of crime and use their votes to sustain continuity.

“Osun voters and residents have a sacred duty to reject illegality, political corruption and unconstitutional pressure to subvert democracy. Our votes must further elongate delivery of democratic dividends as witnessed by our people from 2022 to date.”

Osun State Government, in partnership with a consulting firm,  rewarded students from the State that performed outstandingly in the 2025 West African Examination Council examination with scholarship awards.

The government and the group also presented cash prizes and other gifts to teachers who taught the students on the nine subjects they sat for in WAEC and also gifted the schools that produced them with educational materials.

No fewer than 31 students from across all the local government areas in the state were awarded with cash gifts in what the organizers described as “Celebrating Academic Excellence and Rewarding outstanding students in the SSCE (WAEC).”

Each of the best students, drawn from each of the 30 local government area of the state, was rewarded with the sum of N100,000 while the overall best student in the state was presented with a sum of N1million.

Also, teachers who engaged the students in all the nine WAEC subjects were given the sum of N50,000 while the schools that produced the bright students got packages including educational materials.

Earlier in his remarks, the Coordinator of ECG, Akinmade Akintoye, said the reward programme would be annual, noting that it is to encourage students, teachers and schools to train future leaders better.

“Each of the best students in each of the 30 local government areas in the state got N100,000 in this maiden edition of the Imole Scholarship Award.

“The Overall Best in the state got a scholarship Award of N1 million. This is to encourage future leaders to study well in a world where we have a lot of distractions.

“Every teacher of the nine subjects in which they partook got a gift of N50,000 each. The school got an award as well as educational support.

“The list of best students was directly sent by WAEC headquarters. It is the initiative of Mr Governor because one of his agenda is education.

“We all know that before His Excellency came to power, Osun was not doing well in education. But, in the first year of his Excellency, Osun was the 7th best in Nigeria. The education policy of the governor is working despite the challenges.

“We implore schools not to relent. This is just their stepping stone, the sky is going to be their limit.”

The overall best student in the state, Ajani Oluwagbotemi, a public school student from Atakunmosa East LGA, thanked the State Governor Ademola Adeleke, expressing his desire to study Mechanical Engineering at the Federal University, Oye Ekiti.

“The motivation for success kept me going. I studied mostly indoors. I feel very excited at the scholarship award. God made my struggles to count and my parents were there for me,” he said.

Mass Defection: Reps Member Uzokwe Accuses Atiku Of Personalizing ADC

By Ayodele Oni

A federal lawmaker, Hon. Ifeanyi Uzokwe, has revealed that himself and others left the African Democratic Congress (ADC) due to lack of internal democracy and and dominance of the party by certain individual.

Uzokwe, member representing Nnewi North, Nnewi South and Ekwusigo in the House Of Representatives, publicly accused former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of dominating and personalising a coalition platform, prompting his group’s exit from the ADC.

Seventeen members of the green chamber, has on Tuesday announced their defection from the ADC during plenary.

Uzokwe who spoke during a political discussion, alleged that the coalition arrangement tied to the African Democratic Congress was heavily controlled by Atiku, who, according to him, claimed ownership of both the coalition and the party structure.

“We left ADC because His Excellency Atiku Abubakar said the coalition was formed in his house, that ADC is his party, and that nobody will tell him anything,” Uzokwe stated, expressing frustration over what he described as a lack of internal democracy.

The lawmaker further revealed that efforts were made to encourage a more open process, including calls for transparent primaries, where all interested candidates, particularly from the southern region, could contest fairly.

However, he claimed those proposals were dismissed.

According to Uzokwe, the group’s decision to withdraw was driven by concerns that the coalition was not inclusive and failed to reflect broader political interests across regions.

He stressed that the idea of a united front should not be reduced to the ambitions of a single individual.

In his remarks, Uzokwe also pushed back against narratives surrounding coalition politics, urging political actors to be truthful about how alliances are formed.

He accused some figures of misleading the public and downplaying the contributions of others involved in earlier discussions.

The comments come amid ongoing realignments within Nigeria’s political landscape, as opposition figures continue to explore possible alliances ahead of future elections.

Although Uzokwe did not confirm the next political direction for his group, he hinted at ongoing consultations with other stakeholders.

The development adds another layer of tension to opposition politics, raising questions about unity, leadership structure, and the viability of coalition efforts in Nigeria’s evolving democratic space.

New Caretaker Committee In PDP Is Illegal – FCT Minister, Wike

Nyesom Wike - FCT Minister
Nyesom Wike, FCT Minister

By Ayodele Oni

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has dismissed claims of an interim leadership arrangement in the party, describing such moves as illegal and deceptive.

The FCT Minister pointed out that a faction being led by the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, TaminuTuraki and others, is fraudulent and deliberate disregard for court rulings in the lingering leadership crisis.

Speaking during a media chat with journalists on Wednesday in Abuja, Wike stated that “When will people stop being fraudulent?

“You cannot disobey court judgments and then turn around to deceive Nigerians that you have a legitimate structure. That is not how democracy work.”

The minister insisted that only a court-recognised leadership can validly run the affairs of the party, warning that any parallel structure amounts to illegality.

“You don’t form a leadership in your bedroom and call it a national structure. Let them open an office anywhere and call it PDP secretariat I dare them. That is how you know what is real and what is not,” Wike stated.

He argued that ongoing attempts to constitute what he described as an “illegal caretaker arrangement” were efforts to mislead party members and the public, stressing that the judiciary had already provided clarity on the matter.

“The court has made it clear who should run the affairs of the party pending a lawful convention. You cannot ignore that and start setting up another structure. That is fraud 419,” he added.

Wike further criticised what he termed the erosion of integrity among some political actors, including senior lawyers and party leaders, accusing them of undermining institutions for personal gain.

“People you expect to uphold the law are the ones trying to bend it. That is the tragedy of our system,” he said.
