Age, Ill-health Keep  Awujale Away from Ojude Oba Festival

Awujale Oba-Sikiru-Adetona

By Adesina Soyooye

The highly revered Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, was conspicuously absent from the glamorous and culture-driven Ojude Oba Festival which was celebrated on Sunday, June 8, in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.

The Paramount Ruler of Ijebu Ode, usually the centre of attention at the annual ceremony was nowhere close to the ceremony held on Sunday. He was represented at the well celebrated ceremony by his wife, Olori Kemi Adetona.

The Festival is  usually, attended by thousands of guests and tourists and indigenes who dress up in various beautiful attires and display their rich cultural heritage which, for years, has been sponsored by GLO, founded by Mike Adenuga, a relation of  Adetona.

Even though the reason behind the absence of the Awujale was a subject of speculation at the event,  it has been strongly attributed to old age and its related ill-health. He is 91 years of age.

However, a Palace source said the Awujale was resting, having just been discharged from a Lagos hospital recently.

The festival is usually celebrated three days after the Eid-el-Kabir to pay homage to the Awujale with horse riders adding colour to it.

Present at the 2025 Festival was, among other very high profile guests, Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun.

Coalition Against Tinubu: The Danger Of Saboteurs- Onovo

0

Martin Onovo, a former Presidential Candidate, has warned that the coalition against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has a good chance to oust him from office, warning of sabotage by some elements in the coalition talks.

The former presidential candidate and leader of the Coalition of United Political Parties , CUPP, said the coalition forces could ‘defeat’ the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC in the 2027 election, the News Agency of Nigeria, NANS reports.

Onovo who spoke on Monday also disclosed that what the coalition requires is to be united and ward off saboteurs among them.

The magazine reported that a coalition of opposition political parties have been strategizing ahead the next presidential election, on how to defeat the ruling APC and President Tinubu.

The coalition is headed by a former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and its membership includes the 2023 Labour Party Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi, a former Kaduna State Gvernor Nasir El Rufai, amongst others. They have vowed to unset President Tinubu, citing the hardship his government has imposed on Nigerians.

Onovo, once the Presidential Candidate of the National Conscience Party, NCP, said “the coalition will win the 2027 election with 99 per” if not sabotaged by some elements within it, adding that no single party can defeat President Tinubu and APC.

He also urged president Tinubu to address the economic problems in the country if he still desires to remain in power beyond 2027, by strengthening his administration with efficient and competent appointees.

According to Onovo: “I was the brain behind the largest coalition ever in the fourth Republic which birthed the Coalition of United Political Parties(CUPP) and I can tell you that coalition is the only way, because a united minority is stronger than a divided majority.

“The coalition will win the 2027 election with 99 per cent votes if it is not self- sabotaged.

“Take it to bank, it will not fail, it will succeed and defeat the ruling party convincingly, if they do it well.

“If the coalition is not self -sabotaged, it will be difficult for APC to return in 2027’

“The President needs to be clear about his objectives, he should be all out to better the welfare and security of ordinary Nigerians in the city and remotest areas.

“We need competent people in positions not loyalists. Let us get the right people, right strategies and ethical environment, while the President provides leadership and takes responsibility.

“We need the right commanders with strategies in security and economy to end insecurity and suffering. We must not sacrifice performance for loyalty.”

Political analysts insist that the coalition leaders must get their acts, right on time, ahead the next election to be able oust the ruling party form power, citing the disagreement among its leaders on whether to use an existing political party or form a new one, to achieve their aim.

Kanu: IPOB Calls On International Community’s Intervention, Says He’s A Prisoner Of Conscience

0
Nnamdi Kanu - IPOB Leader

Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has accused the Nigerian government of trampling on his fundamental rights, saying the charges against him are trumped up.

The leader of the secessionist group said he’s a prisoner of conscience describing the charges of terrorism against him as the concoction of the Nigerian government.

He said a federal high court has also declared that IPOB is not a terrorist group contrary to the position of the federal government.

The IPOB leader’s spokesman, Emma Powerful made the remark in a statement on Sunday, saying the rights of Kanu is being trampled upon by the government.

The magazine reported that Kanu has been detained by the Nigerian government  since June 27,  2021  when he was arrested in Kenya, and has been put on trial for terrorism related charges.

Powerful appealed to the international community and well meaning Nigerians to intervene by ensuring that Kanu regained his freedom because he “has no case to answer”describing the charges against him as “bogus”.

Powerful: “We call on Nigerians, the international community, and all lovers of justice to heed this clarion call: Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has no case to answer. The continued persecution of our Leader is not only a gross violation of his fundamental rights but also an indictment of Nigeria’s judiciary, which has descended into a cesspool of judicial terrorism and criminal dereliction of duty.

“For too long, Nigerians have been misled by a false narrative propagated by the Nigerian State and its complicit media, claiming that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu faces charges of treason or terrorism.

“Let us set the record straight: the treasonable felony charges against our leader were struck out years ago when the former Attorney General, Abubakar Malami, realised the case was unwinnable. No treason was committed.

“The Nigerian State, in its desperation to silence the Biafran struggle, resorted to fabricating terrorism charges, despite the Federal High Court’s clear ruling that IPOB is a lawful organisation. This ruling was brazenly overturned through forum shopping by Malami, who secured a proscription order from Justice Kafarati’s court without granting IPOB the fair hearing guaranteed under Section 36 of Nigeria’s Constitution.

“This act alone exposes the Nigerian judiciary as a tool of oppression rather than a bastion of justice,” the IPOB spokesman stated.

The magazine reported that the federal government has rebuffed appeals by prominent Igbo leaders  and other well meaning Nigerians to release the IPOB leader from detention.

Emefiele’s CBN 2 Years After: What Has Changed?

0
Godwin Emefiele

By Bawa Abubakar

Nigeria is indeed an interesting place and we are currently living in a very interesting time. I dare to say that we are living in a strange time such that we have never experienced before in our dear country Nigeria.

The situation in my side of the country up north is so bizarre it feels like we are in a horror movie. All hell has been let loose in my neck of the wood in the last two years that tears well up my eyes as I write this.

The so-called subsidy removal and exchange rate equalisation announced by the president in his inauguration speech impacted us up here instantaneously.

Before the president stepped down from the inauguration podium most petrol stations had closed their gates, virtually chasing out even motorists at the pumps.

When they reopened a few days later, petrol pump price had jumped from about N250.00 to about N550.00.

That was in May 2023. By December ending 2023,  it was as if Armageddon had come early in the north. Fuel price was over N700 per litre; exchange rate was about N860/$ and hunger and malnutrition raged around us. We saw infants withering and dying before us. It was indeed a shock treatment as described by the British newspaper FT.

We thought President Muhammadu Buhari was very poor at the job considering that Nigeria even  suffered an economic recession in 2016. We cried and wailed about hardship in the north. Little did we know we were in paradise all the while.

As an economist and entrepreneur who has been trying to cobble together numerous small scale businesses since the past 10 years, I began to reflect upon what has transpired over the decade. How my potable water production business and grains farm have almost vanished in the last two years and my workers dissipated. The abrupt fuel price hike hit my little factory hard. We shut down temporarily… and we could never open again till today.

I remembered the immediate past governor of the CBN, Mr. Godwin Emefiele. I had worked in a private firm post-graduation from university until I latched on to one of his numerous development finance programmes.

I thought the Youth Entrepreneurship Development Programme (YEDP) was a ruse. Which youth trusted the Nigerian government?

But my friend who had succeeded convinced me to apply.

I got an initial five million naira for  the production of potable water. It was the peak of dry season in Kaduna. It was so successful I was able to pay back in record time.

I applied for another loan under another dev finance scheme called: 100 for 100 Policy on Productivity (PPP).

I invested in maize production. It was also a good and profitable investment. I was able to repay the principal before the new sheriffs came to the CBN in 2023.

Virtually all those direct intervention development finance programmes have bee thrown out so to speak. Like the new government, the CBN seems to have no human face whatsoever.

This must explain why there’s so much poverty in Nigeria today. In the land of plenty like Nigeria, there should never be so much hunger, starvation and poverty across the country. Not to mention the increased violence and bloodshed across the north.

It was laughable to me when  Mr Emefiele was first picked up on the charge of sponsoring terrorism. Then we heard he was being held for gun running. When all these failed, they accused him of all sorts of things.

It was of course all politically motivated. Never in the history of Nigeria has a CBN governor been so dragged.

A man who has been in  banking all his life, rising to become the GMD of one of the largest private  financial holding companies in Africa was never a pauper.

It becomes laughable when such a person is being accused of pilfering foreign currency through his office boy. They said he bought some property here and there. And the question is: is there any property the head of the largest bank in Nigeria cannot afford? Well, that’s for the courts to decide.

But the point they will not admit is that Nigeria wouldn’t be the hell it is today if Emefiele’s robust macroeconomic policies had subsisted in the CBN till date.

The difference between Emefiele and the crew at the bank today is worlds apart. Let me enumerate just a few:

CORRUPTION: I knew CBN a bit having participated in their loan schemes.

My friends still working in the bank say no senior management appointments are made on merit or seniority any more. Those who want it  badly have to pay heavily for it – and in dollars too.

So major appointments are now purchased. Of course fresh jobs are almost 100% offered on ethnic considerations. Merit is in abeyance at the CBN now.

DISCO METERING PROGRAMME: Since Emefiele left the CBN, hardly has any electricity distribution company given out meters.

In 2020, Emefiele’s CBN introduced the Nigeria Mass Metering Programme (NMMP) which facilitated nearly one million smart electric meters. This was installed for consumers free of any immediate charges. The cost recovery was built into subsequent energy purchases by the consumer.

Most electricity consumers in Nigeria would probably have been metered today if the scheme had been allowed to continue.

Yet, despite the exorbitant rates of meter delivery to consumers, DISCOS still cannot deliver. Even after payment.

EMEFIELE, BUHARI CARED ABOUT NIGERIA AND THE PEOPLE: CBN had so many programmes then that people began to wonder whether it was the economic ministry.

We all remember that about 44 basic products were barred from official Forex allocation.

Today, we have not only jettisoned that rule, FG officially provides funds in trillions of naira for the importation of grains.

Nigeria was almost becoming self-sufficient in rice production with mills growing exponentially. Today, many rice mills are no longer producing because there is no paddy to mill.

CBN used to have electricity stabilisation facilities. Today the average Nigerian cannot afford electricity.

MORE MONEY FOR GOVERNMENT, MORE TROUBLE FOR THE PEOPLE: They accused Emefiele of accumulating ways and means borrowings of over N30 trillion in nine years. But in two years W and M has exceeded 10 trillion already. We don’t even have proper records anymore.

The FG is awash with cash today, having removed subsidy, closed Forex arbitrage, hiked   taxes and levies, not to mention stupendous borrowings. Yet the economy is far worse than it was. Nigeria is melting and our people are dying of hunger. Where’s all the money gone?

The simple difference is that Emefiele and Buhari were applying Nigeria’s revenues to develop the country and sustain the well being of the people.

FINALLY, there’s no doubt that Nigerians are missing Emefiele and Buhari’s time already just after two years of the current administration.

We must not forget that these two men vehemently refused to  devalue our naira in spite of threats from the West. They also resisted removing fuel subsidy in one swoop, knowing it would hurt the Nigerian poor irretrievably as we see happening today.

Such was their patriotism and leadership acumen. We miss them already!

2027 Not Sure For Tinubu Despite APC Govs Endorsement – Ndume

0
Senator Ali Ndume

Senator Ali Ndume has warned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu not to rely on his endorsement by 22 All Progressives Congress, APC for his 2027 re-election bid.

The Senator representing Borno South in the Nigerian Senate said the recent endorsement by the APC governors may not translate to victory for him in the next presidential election, citing the case of former President Goodluck Jonathan who lost despite the support of the PDP Governors for hims at the time.

Ndume who spoke during a Channels Television Program Sunday Politics, said he did not support the endorsement, describing  what happened as ‘majority having” their way. The senator is a member of the ruling APC, the president’s party.

According to Ndume, who consider himself as President Tinubu’s ally, but has been criticizing him  lately, what the president required to win the next election is the support of Nigerians.

The magazine reported that the 22 APC Governors in the country has recently declared their support for President Tinubu during an elaborate event held in Abuja, the nation’s capital a forth night ago

The president has also received the endorsement of his party as the sole candidate for the next election.

Senator Ndume said the slew of endorsements may not necessarily translate to reelection for President Tinubu, waring that the only way for him to return to Aso Rock, Nigeria’s Seat of Power is to ensure that the hardship in the country is dealt with before the next election.

According to him, the president will be judged by his performance in office, saying the Renewed Hope Agenda of the president has become a mirage for many suffering Nigerians who wil decide his fate.

Ndume said, “I was there but that was not why I was there; I was there for a summit and when I realised that it was not a summit and voice vote was put about the endorsement of Mr President, I just left, and that does not mean I am not an APC member. The majority had its way but few of us felt that was not right.

“It happened before, not once, not twice. It happened during Jonathan. That does not mean anything. Politicians are decamping but the people who are the voters are not decamping.

“I hope that he would look back historically and see that the gathering of people to endorse you does not mean anything.

“Jonathan had 22 governors then endorsing him like was done now. And what happened? Jonathan lost woefully. A lot of money was spent. Even the election was shifted but we are not learning our lessons. I pity Mr President.”

Tinubu Forgives Sanwo-Olu  As Lagos Governor Prostrates

0
Bola Tinubu and Babajide Sanwo-olu

By Adesina Soyooye

In a marked difference between two very important States in Nigeria – Lagos and Rivers States – the frosty relationship between President Bola Tinubu and his political godson, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is over.

All the strong rumours, speculations and prophesies to the effect that Governor Sanwo-Olu was on his way out of the number one seat in Lagos, are now history. They have been deposited in the dustbin. And Sanwo-Olu can now breath easy. His sins are, finally, forgiven by the President.

For months, the relationship between President Tinubu and  Governor Sanwo-Olu had been very untidy. It, allegedly, began with the failed impeachment of the most powerful House of Assembly Speaker in Nigeria, Mudashiru Obasa of Lagos. The move which shook Lagos and exposed it to ridicule, given that it is the President’s home State, angered Tinubu. It came to him by surprise as he was neither briefed nor carried along.

He felt betrayed that Sanwo-Olu did not give him an inkling. Finally he hit the roof when he was told that Sanwo-Olu was behind the coup to remove Obasa, an unabashed Tinubu foot soldier and loyalist.

Added to the Obasa issue, it is alleged, is the defeat in Lagos of then Presidential Candidate Tinubu by the Labour Party Candidate, Peter Obi, under the nose of Sanwo-Olu as Governor. It was unbelievable.

The move to impeach Obasa without referring to Tinubu was the final straw.

He decided to pay back the Governor in his own coin.

First he gave Sanwo-Olu space. According to reports, since the Obasa incident, Tinubu, consistently, refused to see Sanwo-Olu privately. All efforts were rebuffed.

However, the fractured relationship became very public during the President’s long visit to Lagos State to mark 50 years of the founding of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, along with other Regional Presidents, to commission and/or flag off Federal projects and to celebrate Sallah.

Reports, confirmed by videos showed that the President shunned and embarrassed Sanwo-Olu publicly.

As dictated by protocol, Sanwo-Olu received him on arrival at the Airport from Abuja. But that’s only as close as he could get to the President. He, allegedly, was not on the convoy that saw the President to his Ikoyi home from the airport. He played no role at the ECOWAS 50th anniversary. And at the commissioning of the completed 30km of the much-talked about Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, the President shunned him completely. He conspicuously skipped shaking Sanwo-Olu’s hands as he shook other dignitaries. Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, was chosen above him, the host Governor/Chairman South-west Governor’s Forum, to speak at the ceremony. In another ceremony two days later, Sanwo-Olu respected himself and kept off. He busied himself with other things. That was odd.

However, as they say, ”all’s well that ends well”.

On Sunday the “powerful and influential” Governor’s  Advisory Council, GAC, led Sanwo-Olu to meet the President at his Ikoyi private residence. They pleaded for forgiveness for Sanwo-Olu and others who they said had angered him.

All of them, including the Governor, then prostrated before the President who told Sanwo-Olu and all of them that all us forgiven; that all sins have been forgiven; that all is well.”

It was an excited and happy Sanwo-Olu who told the press, thereafter, that “they are one big family. That all is well. So Tinubu and his son are one again. The sea is calm. The storm is gone. Sanwo-Olu pledged his loyalty to the President and the APC. He said there was no problem; that people were being more Catholic than the Pope.

The Lagos story should teach Rivers State a lesson. This is the President who got hurt, felt betrayed, yet, he forgave. He does not want to stay in a calm Abuja  while his backyard is on fire.  Questions are: What is stopping Rivers people from doing same? Where are Rivers Elders and Traditional Rulers from both sides of the divide – FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and Siminalayi Fubara?

How Tiv Youths Killed, Rustled 1,185 Of Our Cattle In Less Than One Month – Miyetti Allah

Fulani Cattle Breeders - Herdsmen

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, MACBAN, on Sunday, June 8, 2025, alleged the killings, rustling of their cows, and serious threat to the lives of their members in many Benue state communities.

The MACBAN alarm is tolling amidst the orgy of violent attacks and killings in parts of the state, allegedly, orchestrated by suspected killer herdsmen.

The Benue state Chapter of MACBAN in a statement jointly issued by Ardo Risku and Ibrahim Galma, Chairman and Secretary respectively, alleged that over 1,185 cows ,and 54 sheep were rustled between mid-May and June 2, 2025.

The rustling, the body stated, occurred in two Local Councils of the State -Agatu and Guma.

According to the Cattle breeders, while security agencies were able to recover about 162 cows ,a large part still remain unaccounted for.

“In the middle of May, 2025, 150 cows belonging to Umar Rabiu and another 130 cows of another herder were rustled in Agatu LGA of Benue State.

Recently, a total of 905 cows, and 54 sheep belonging Abubakar Abdullahi, Babangida Hassan ,Samaila Baba ,and Sanni Hassan were rustled on June 2, 2025  close to Yogbo community in Guma LGA of Benue state.

Benue Police Command intercepted the rustlers ,and recovered 162 cows ,of which 33 were injured ,leaving 743 cows and 54 sheep unrecovered

“When the owners of the recovered cows went to Makurdi last Tuesday to reclaim the recovered cows, they were attacked along the expressway close to Lafia garage in North Bank by suspected Tiv youth, leading to the death of Sanni Hassan”, MACBAN stated .

This is just as it called on the Benue state Government ,security agencies and other relevant authorities to thoroughly investigate the matter with a view to arresting those behind the death of its member, as well as the massive rustling of their cattle.

The Association also urged the Benue State Government to consider  assisting affected members and their families.

“State Of Emergency Will Worsen The Security Problems In Benue State” – Conference Of Bishops Warns

0
Catholic Bishops

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

Declaring a State of Emergency in Benue State will not only be  unnecessary, but also counterproductive, the Charismatic Bishops Conference of Nigeria CBCN has insisted.

The body of Christian Clerics maintained that what the State needs in the face of mounting security challenges are unity of purpose and support for  Governor Hyacinth Alia.

The CBCN position is coming against the backdrop of  persistent calls of late by some individuals and entities, including some Catholic Clerics, urging President Bola Tinubu to consider declaring a State of emergency in the State, as a veritable way of taming the orgy of violent attacks and killings that have been visited on some parts of the state by suspected killer herdsmen and other criminal elements.

The Source reports that over 100 deaths, and monumental destruction of both private and public properties have been recorded following several violent attacks on some communities in Benue state  by suspected banditry and terrorist groups in the last few months.

But in a  statement issued on Saturday by its Benue State Coordinator, Archbishop Alexander Nyoonkyegh, the CBCN noted that the state Governor being a man of God, needs prayers, support and encouragement from community and religious leaders at this trying moment ,,and not agitation for a state of emergency.

” Governor Alia is our brother in the vineyard ,and as true men of God ,we must protect and support him.

At this point ,what Benue  state needs is not a state of emergency but unity and cooperation to overcome its challenges.

The CBCN expressed fears that proclaiming a state of emergency could result in bringing an outsider to manage the affairs of the state which could lead to the escalations of the situation.

Archbishop Nyoonkyegh referenced the case of Rivers state where the handing over of the leadership to an outsider has tended to complicate the situation.

“When you have a son, a  brother doing his best in the vineyard ,the right thing is to say ‘Brother ,keep it up.’

“Rev Fr Alia is working despite the tough circumstances

We must continue to pray for him and not work against him”, the CBCN coordinator stated

According to the body, even when he is not in charge of the security forces of the country, Governor Alia  has nonetheless given his best in the fight against insecurity in the state .

The CBCN while lauding the efforts so far made by  the President to halt the spate of attacks and killings in the state ,called for more security presence.

Matawalle Urges Governor Lawal To Openly Join APC Rather Than Sneaking Into Party

Bello Matawalle: Embroiled in Bandit romance allegation, to be replaced.

By Akinwale Kasali

Bello Matawalle,  Minister of State for Defence, has stated that Governor Dauda Lawal is welcome to the All Progressives Congress, APC, with open arms, if he is willing to openly dump the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Zamfara State, rather than sneaking into the APC through the bavk door.

Matawalle, a former Governor of Zamfara, made the call at his residence in his hometown Maradun, while receiving thousands of his supporters who paid him Sallah homage.

Matawalle said the APC is a Party of leaders with humility and respect, advising Governor Lawal to join the APC.

The Minister said instead of the Governor trying to sneak into the party, the Governor should come out in the open to follow the proper channel to join the party rather than hide-and-seek type of game he is currently playing in joining the Party.

He added that he has no  grudges with the Governor to join the party and therefore urged Lawal to embrace the party by joining the trailblazers of security, progress, developments, peace and transquility.

Matawalle said, “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is a progressives leader, a good manager of peace and tranquility and is always focusing on the development of the country.

“He is welcoming all wishing to join the trailblazers of peace, harmony growth and development, so Governor Lawal should be bold enough to join the APC”, he said.

He however assured his teeming supporters of his commitment to their welfare and wellbeing and urged them to continue to support the present administration of President Tinubu for the realisation of its Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly in the areas of security, agriculture, health, social wellbeing and economic development.

He added that the President has Zamfara State at heart and is always looking forward to salvaging its current situation of insecurity and economic hardship, calling on the people of the State to give their maximum support and cooperation to this laudable desire of the President Tinubu administration.

Dauda Lawal - Zamfra State Governor
Governor Dauda Lawal

He recalled the efforts by the Tinubu administration of eliminating several terrorists Kinpins and their foot soldiers who were hitherto terrorising the state, the region and the county in general.

He said the President has recently ordered the security operatives to bring to an end the spate of insecurity in Northern Nigeria before the end of the year and the Ministry of Defence and  security high Commands are tirelessly working out modalities and method and modus operandi to ensure compliance with the Presidential directives.

Matawalle accused Zamfara State Government of not doing very well in terms of fighting banditry in the State, instead, ventured into deceiving the people.

He said during his time as the Governor of the State, people enjoyed and witnessed rapid and meticulous clamping down on security, freedom, welfare and social wellbeing of the people of state, unlike the current happening under Lawal’s administration in the state, where people, including members of the PDP are grumbling of the type of leadership in the State.

He, therefore, challenged Governor  Lawal to openly disclose the amount of money he is receiving monthly, to justify the development projects he is claiming to have executed so far in the State.
