Defection: Fayose Vows To Stay In PDP, Hails Tinubu

A former Governor of Ekiti state, Ayodele Fayose has vowed not to leave the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. He said those that have left the party did so on choice.

The two-time Ekiti governor made this remark in Lagos after paying the Sallah homage to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The former governor also praised President Tinubu saying he has done his best to revamp the bad economy left by his predecessor, former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The remark also comes amidst the  gale of defections that have trailed the leading opposition party in the country. Not a few defectors, state governors, senators and members of the House of Representatives from the PDP have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in the last few weeks.

According to sources close to the PDP, what they described as the Tinubu’s Tsunami is expected to sweep more aggrieved politicians from the PDP and other opposition parties into the ruling party ahead the 2027 elections.

Instructively, Segun Sowumi a former spokesman for the PDP and ardent critic of President Tinubu has declared his intention to join the APC if appointed into a government position by the president. Political watchers in the country say this is the most trying times for the PDP, which once ruled the country for 16 years from 1999 to 2015.

“I, Ayo Fayose, will not move from PDP to any political party, not even APC. I’m this year, 65 years. It’s within the choices of those who’ve chosen to move,” the former governor said.

The magazine reported that two PDP state governors, Sheriff Obovrewori and Umo Eno of Delta and Akwa Ibom states have recently dumped their former party for the APC citing the need to join the mainstream politics at the centre.

For instance while speaking after defecting to the APC Governor Eno said the state needed to “move with time and flow” of the politics in the country.

He said: “I believe no one that has ever moved or changed party has ever consulted the way I have done.

“I did that because of the respect I have for all of you, stakeholders in Project Akwa Ibom. I did that knowing that each and every one of you needed to be consulted and informed.

“I needed to explain why I am moving, and at this point, that consultation culminated into meeting all the critical stakeholders in PDP last night in this hall, where I took time to explain to you why we must move.

“We must be able to interpret the time and flow with the time and not run away with tide.

“Having completed the rounds of my consultation, as your servant that you have elected to serve you, I, therefore, have decided to progressively move to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

‘Today, I have made the bold declaration to join that train.”

The PDp is currently impeded by some contending forces within its fold who are fighting desperately for its soul, with the allegation that the FCT Minister and former Governor of Rivers state, Nyesom Wike being at the middle of the crisis.

Fayose is Wike’s ally.

OPINION: Sin No More, Sanwo-Olu

0

By Reuben Abati

Nigerians woke up to the delightful news, Monday morning, that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, currently on Sallah vacation in Lagos, had decided, following entreaties from interested and concerned parties, to forgive his political godson, with whom there had been a frosty relationship for months. The political godson is Babajide Sanwoolu, the sitting governor of Lagos. It is common knowledge that till date no one can be governor of Lagos state without the blessing of President Tinubu. He has been the Kabiyesi of Lagos state politics long before he became the President of Nigeria. Every governor after his own tenure as governor of Lagos state (1999 – 2007) was handpicked by him.

Anyone who has ever held any important political position in Lagos since 1999, either as a councillor, local government chairman, member of the house of assembly, national assembly member, or a political appointee knows that he or she has held that position at the pleasure of the godfather, popularly known as Asiwaju or the Jagaban. One wrong step, any act of misdemeanour could land the person in the godfather’s black book.

Those who have found themselves in such a position would rather wish it had never happened. And so it happened to Governor Sanwo-Olu. The rift between the governor and his godfather became a matter of open, public knowledge during the president’s latest visit to Lagos for the Eid-el-Kabir break. When the president arrived at the Murtala Muhammad Airport in Lagos, it was reported that as courtesy and convention dictate, the governor had gone to the airport to receive him. He was reportedly snubbed publicly. The president by-passed the governor and shook hands with the deputy governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, and others. During the inauguration of the Phase one, 30 kilometres stretch of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, a major public event, the president again openly snubbed the governor. He refused to shake his hands. Rather than invite him to speak, he being the host governor, the president ignored Sanwo-Olu and asked Governor Dapo Abiodun, governor of neighbouring Ogun state, to speak. Everyone was shocked. The snub was so open, so clear, it was no longer a matter for speculation.

It was at this point that peacemakers who had knowledge of the rift between godfather and godson intensified their efforts to broker peace. They seem to have succeeded as reported at length by ThisDay newspaper of June 9. The newspaper refers to them as “Wise Men”. The Holy Scripture at Matthew 5: 9 says “Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God.”

The peacemakers include the chairman of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) in Lagos state, Alhaji Tajudeen Olusi, Chairman of the All-Progressives Congress in the state, Hon. Cornelius Ojelabi and other members of the GAC (the Baba Sope group) in Lagos. They appealed to the president to forgive the governor and others who might have erred in his sight. The president reportedly responded that “It’s all over now. All is forgiven,” and that he had also accepted the report on the local council primary elections. Members of the GAC were said to have immediately prostrated for the president. Some of them are either his age-mates or older than him. His hands were tied.

Outside of the GAC members who were granted audience, ThisDay reports that quite a number of “wise men” also intervened to make the truce possible. They include Chief Dipo Eludoyin, Mr. Gilbert Chagoury, Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka, Mr. Dele Alake, Aremo Olusegun Osoba, Chief Bisi Akande, Chief James Ibori, and Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola. There are probably traditional rulers, like the Ooni of Ife, Ojaja II, and others in the background, which means the ThisDay list may not be exhaustive.

Governor Sanwo-Olu owes the peacemakers a debt of gratitude. They are individually and collectively people that the president respects and whose friendship he values. The governor is also a very lucky man. Godfathers in Nigerian politics do not often forgive their godsons that offend them. They crush them. They inflict much pain to teach them a lesson and to deter other present and future godsons who may be tempted to grow wings.

Whoever is in doubt should revisit the travails of Gov. Rasheed Ladoja of Oyo State (2003 – 2006, 2006 – 2007) and his Godfather, Alhaji Lamidi Adedibu; Gov. Chris Ngige of Anambra State (2003 – 2006) and his godfathers, Chris and Andy Uba; former Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State (2016 – 2024), and his Godfather, Senator Adams Oshiomhole; Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State (2015 -2019), and his Godfather, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State (2023 to date) and Godfather Nasir el Rufai, and Governor Sim Fubara of Rivers State (2023 to date, currently suspended), and his godfather, Minister Nyesom Wike. It is not often that the godson succeeds in driving the political godfather out of town as Gov Uba Sani may have done, or gets reinstated in office as in the examples of Ladoja and Chris Ngige.

It is usually the case that the godson gets punished. By promising to forgive Governor Sanwo-Olu and everyone who has erred against him, President Tinubu has shown magnanimity. He may have forgiven, and may not forget, but the act of forgiveness is in itself divine. By that singular gesture, President Tinubu has set a good example for other godfathers in Nigeria’s political landscape. Those godfathers who go about threatening to fight those who have offended them “to the finish” should learn from the president’s leadership example. The symbolism of the Eid el Adha season inheres in the ideal of sacrifice. Godfathers should project the milk of human kindness by learning to sacrifice their egos. As the folk saying states, it is only the elder who learns to forgive who can build a large community.

It is now up to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu “to go and sin no more”. We have argued elsewhere about the menace of godfathers in Nigerian politics. In a heavily competitive atmosphere, those who seek advancement in politics cannot rely solely on the wisdom of the electorate. Nigerian politics is expensive. It is money-driven. Godfathers provide the financial resources. They fund the political machinery. They mobilise goodwill. The electorate and party agents listen to the godfather who is part-financier, part-cultural leader, even if they do not know the candidate. Disagreements with the godfather usually occur when the godson, now in office gets so carried away, he begins to assert himself, act independently, expresses opinions that are unacceptable to the godfather, or as in the case of Ladoja and Ngige fails to honour deals previously agreed to with the godfather. The average political godson asserts himself at his own risk. It is instructive that the referent here is masculine as there are extremely few goddaughters involved. This is a graphic illustration of the underdeveloped and exclusionary nature of Nigeria’s democracy.

What could possibly have been Sanwo-Olu’s offence in the present case? Those who are familiar with the matter have come up with a number of possibilities but these can at best be regarded as assumptions since neither the president nor Sanwo-Olu has publicly disclosed what transpired between them.

The speculations are as follows:

One: It is said that the rift could be traced to the 2023 general election. It would be recalled that the president, then a candidate on the platform of the APC scored less than 50% in Lagos, his very own political stronghold. He was outperformed by Mr. Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP), who won the state with 45.81% in the February 25, 2023 election. This was a huge political embarrassment. President Tinubu thus found himself in a situation similar to that of President Olusegun Obasanjo in the 1999 Presidential election in Ogun State and indeed the South West. Jagaban was one of the opposition politicians who laughed at OBJ then: how he even lost at the polling booth in front of his own home. For Tinubu who had earned a reputation over the years as a master political strategist, it was a deep cut for him to be defeated by Peter Obi in Lagos! When the gubernatorial election held on March 18, 2023 with Sanwo-Olu as candidate, the APC won Lagos with 65.95% of the votes. It turned out that on February 25, APC party agents were not mobilised to man polling centres during the presidential election. The feedback was that the governor said there was no cash, allowing Labour Party agents to have a field day at the polling centres! But cash became available ahead of the governor’s own election. With all his claim to political mastery, President Tinubu cannot in all honesty accuse any of his supporters in other states of failing to win enough votes for him, when he also fell short in his own state. Where was Sanwo-Olu, the sitting governor of Lagos state? What did he fail to do to help the godfather?

Two: as if that was not embarrassing enough, there was also the case of the speaker of the Lagos house of assembly, Hon. Mudasiru Obasa. There had been no love lost between the governor and the speaker. In November 2024, when the governor went to present Budget 2025 proposals to the assembly, accompanied by members of the GAC, they were reportedly kept waiting for four whole hours by the speaker. This was clearly disrespectful. When the president visited Lagos in December 2024, both the GAC and the governor reported Obasa to the president. He was summoned and was reprimanded by the president. The president did not want another Rivers state in his own backyard. But if he thought he had settled the brewing conflict between the executive and the legislature in his state, he was mistaken. When the president travelled abroad in January, and Obasa travelled to the United States, the speaker’s impeachment was quickly arranged and he was replaced by his own deputy. When Obasa returned from his trip, he refused to vacate the seat, and literally, hell was let loose in Lagos. It was said that the president not only wondered who on earth could have overruled him in Lagos state, he was further miffed when the governor feigned ignorance about the crisis in the Lagos state house of assembly. If he had overlooked the election matter, he did not this time around. He shut the door against Sanwo-Olu thereafter. Every effort by the governor to see the president was rebuffed. Whenever the president travelled either to Doha or France, Sanwo-Olu travelled hoping to be granted audience. But no way. Eventually, President Tinubu directed that Hon. Obasa must be reinstated as speaker of the Lagos state house of assembly. Nobody needed to tell the governor that he was in trouble.

Three: there is this additional matter of a certain merry widow who went to the Caribbean to throw a lavish birthday party in an exotic, all-expenses paid hotel resort. Governor Sanwo-Olu was reportedly sighted at the party behaving as if he had inherited another man’s workshop! He sneaked out of town, abandoned his duty post, and people saw him, merrying around in a strange land, and they talked. They whispered. The president of course must have heard too and he thought the governor was beginning to lose concentration.

But all that is over now… The president says all sins are forgiven. Sanwo-Olu is old enough to know that his “enemies” would now go into an overdrive to watch everything he does or says, and what he fails to do, so they can build another case against him, to tell the president that he is not deserving of the forgiveness that he has been granted.

He is advised to stay away from sin and sinful activities. He stands to lose nothing if he extends the olive branch to his known detractors. He will lose more if he tries to fight back. It was good to see him at the president’s Lagos residence granting an interview and saying there is no discord between him, the son, and the father, President Tinubu. He is like the Biblical prodigal son, whose story is told in Luke 15: 11-32.

In his joy and celebration, Governor Sanwo-Olu should reflect on lessons he may have learnt. He should be concerned about his political future, for having served as governor for nearly two terms, he certainly should not do anything to risk a spell in political wilderness. Above all, he should not meddle in the politics of other states. He should concentrate on the mandate that he has been given in Lagos state. Let him go and sin no more.

Wike To PDP: Avoid Extinction, Zone 2027 Presidency To South

0
Nyesom Wike - FCT Minister
Nyesom Wike, FCT Minister

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike has insisted that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, must zone its presidential candidate to the south in  a south in 2027.

The minister said this is the position of some PDP stakeholders after a meeting in Abuja, the nation’s capital on Monday.

He said this is the only way to save the party from being driven into extinction, saying the PDP is still paying for the mistakes it made in 2023.

The minister made the remark yesterday in a communique he read after a meeting by some PDP stakeholders, which included former Governors of Benue and Abia states, Samuel Ortom and Okezie Ikpeazu, the PDP National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, who the minister said remained the substantive scribe in line with the Supreme Court judgment.

The concerned stakeholders also affirmed their support for the Committee recently set up by the leadership of the party, headed by a former Senate President, Bukola Saraki to reconcile some aggrieved members of the party.

The communique reads: “At a meeting of the aforementioned group on the 9th day of June, 2025 in Abuja, the state of affairs of the party; the need to reinforce internal democracy, equity and justice within the ranks of the party were discussed and carefully reviewed.

“The eminent stakeholders and concerned leaders drawn from the various states of the federation, took a deep and strong view of the situation in our party and came to the following conclusions:

  • The seemingly intractable crisis in the party is as a result of inexplicable refusal of a few to adhere to the party Constitution, with particular reference to Section 36(1)(a) (b) and (c), Sections 47(3)(5) and 48(1)(i) and the definitive Supreme Court Judgment regarding the position of the office of the National Secretary of the party;
  • The eminent stakeholders and concerned leaders are alarmed that the party is in an inevitable path to self- annihilation, if urgent steps are not taken to rein in the desperate, divisive and selfish tendencies that brought the party to its knees in the lead up to the 2023 election.
  • These divisive tendencies, unfortunately, have found expression in the conduct of certain interest within the ranks of our party both at NEC, NWC and Board of trustees level.”

The stakeholders also resolved:

  • That to finally arrest the inexorable drift towards extinction in our party, the party must, without further delay, respect the judgment of the Supreme Court. We, therefore, unequivocally reaffirm Senator Sam Anyanwu as the duly elected and substantive National Secretary of our great party.
  • In the spirit of fairness, inclusion, federal Character principles and respect for our party Constitution, the Party must make an unequivocal pronouncement Zoning its presidential candidate to the south in the 2027 elections after the unbroken years of Northern President under President Muhammadu Buhari.
  • In line with the provisions of our party constitution only the National Secretary, Senator Sam Anyanwu, can issue notices of meeting of the National Convention, National Executive Committee, National Caucus and the National Working Committee and to this end all notices not issued by him and actions founded on them, including correspondences to INEC are null and void and of no effect whatsoever.
  • Furthermore, it is clear from the Constitution that only the National Convention, properly and duly constituted can remove Senator Sam Anyanwu, the National Secretary, arising from his status as a member of the National Executive Committee of the party.
  • We, therefore, demand that the acting National Chairman and the National Secretary jointly issue a notice to INEC with an attached agenda for the NEC meeting of the party being the only pathway to abide by extant laws.
  • We, the stakeholders reiterate our commitment to our great party and urge all members to uphold the rule of law, respect constitutional mandate, resist all machinations aimed at destabilizing the party and support the efforts of the National Reconciliation Committee headed by His Excellency, Senator Bukola Saraki.”

The magazine reported that the party had on May 12, 2025, appointed Saraki  as head of a 7-man committee to finetune modalities for the upcoming National Executive Committee, NEC), and reconcile some aggrieved members back to the party.

State Of The Nation: CSOs Hail Tinubu’s Education, Macroeconomic Initiatives

0
Njiko Igbo Forum will not support Tinubu

The Independent Civil Society Groups in Nigeria, CSGN, has hailed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as  ‘forward’ looking leader citing his ‘innovative’ programmes in the education sector.

The group gave the verdict on Monday while releasing the report on the president’s Renewed Hope Agenda and National Budget Strategies.

The president of the group Emmanuel Agabi said the administration has performed well in the education sector, citing initiative such as the Nigeria Education Loan Fund,  NELFUND, and the three million Technical Talent programme, apart from showing prudence in the management and allocation of resources.

Through these programmes , Agabi said, the president has plugged loopholes, promote social inclusion, reduced poverty and supported disadvantaged groups across the country.

He cited the 2025 Budget as a further commitment by the administration to prudently manage the country’s resources, noting however that challenges in the areas of security and food production must be immediately addressed.

Agabi: “The 2025 budget reflects a commitment to prudent financial management and strategic allocation of resources.

These measures aim to promote social inclusion, reduce poverty, and support economic resilience among disadvantaged groups.

“The government should intensify efforts to stabilise the macroeconomic environment, enhance security, and implement targeted interventions to support food production and distribution.”

The civil society’s position on the state of the nation is coming as the Tinubu’s administration is marking two years in office.

While the government has scored itself high not a few Nigerians have criticised the government for alleged insensitivity to the plight of Nigerians which have suffered under the brunt of its policies.

The critics of the administration insist that it has brought untold hardship to the country since President bola Ahmed Tinubu came to office on may 29, 2023. They cited the removal of fuel subsidy, convergence of the exchange rate amongs others as being responsible for the current economic challenges that the country now faces.

The administration however insist that it’s laying a foundation for the country’s future  prosperity.

“Stop Stealing Our Children”:  Heart Wrenching Story Of Agbarho Women

0
Agbarho Women Protest

By Charles Igbo

The women of Agbarho in Ugheli North, Delta State,  are in pains. Their children  are being stolen. Minors, between the ages of three and 10 years. At the last count, the women lamented, 26 of their children have vanished into thin air. Their families are miserable and in deep pains. They are grieving. They don’t know whose child will be next. Or how and when.

So, they have taken to the streets to bemoan their fate. To weep for their lost children whose fate they hardly know. Dead or alive?

Placards in hand, the women marched through the streets to draw attention to their plight.

“Stop Stealing Our Children” “We Want Justice”, the placards read.

The women strongly suspect that their abducted children may, perhaps, have been trafficked to outside Nigeria, or worse, especially, in this age of ritual killings and harvesting of human organs.

In an interview with News Central TV, their Spokesperson, Madam Elizabeth, said the attention of the State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has been drawn to their sad situation. The Governor reacted by sending the Local Government Chairman who led others to meet with the Community’s Traditional Ruler, and the women.  Still, no dice.

The women also said they had reported to the Police but nothing has been done so far. They said the police only told them they would be informed if anyone brought back a

child”. But till date, no child, out of the 26, has been brought back.

She disclosed that their children began to disappear since March. She revealed: “One person would cry today, and before we finish looking for that child, another would

go missing,”

She then told a heartbreaking story of the disappearance of twin babies.

According to her:

“Their mom was cooking and went to put fish in her soup, and before she returned, the two children who were playing had

been taken.”

Now, the community and its women are asking the Government and Security Agencies to come their aid, get their children and stop further child-stealing.

Ondo Gov Election  PDP Candidate, Ajayi Appeals Tribunal Judgement

0
Agboola Ajayi

By Ayodele Oni

People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Governorship Candidate in Ondo State, Agboola Ajayi, said he will appeal the judgement of the Election Petition Tribunal which upheld the victory of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa in last year’s poll.

The Tribunal had last week dismissed the petition against the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for lacking in merit.

Ajayi pointed out that he came to the conclusion after a diligent review of the judgement along with his team of lawyers.

The PDP candidate stated in a statement on Tuesday that “The Gubernatorial Candidate of the PDP in the last governorship election in Ondo State, H E Agboola Alfred Ajayi and the PDP in the State have undertaken a diligent review of  the  Judgment of the Ondo State Election Petition Tribunal delivered on 4th of June 2025.

“Due cognizance and rapt attention has been accorded to the kernel on which the Honourable Justices  based their findings and  conclusion, which in our opinion did not  accorded proper analysis to details of the evidences and exhibits submitted to Tribunal while it sat.

“Thus to say the very least, we feel disappointed that we didn’t get justice at that level, but we remain undeterred and undiscouraged in our search to ensure that justice is not only served in this matter, but also ensure that honesty begins to prevail in our election process.

“Therefore we restate our conclusion to vitiate our rights and desires towards advancing our commitment to the legal process by appealing the judgement of the Tribunal at the Court of Appeal.

“This we do in spite of the obvious challenges that the Judiciary faces in Nigeria at this particular period; including prevailing views that suggest the unportability of justice in our nation.

“We remain irrevocably committed to leaving no stone unturned in getting justice in this matter, because laws, particularly electoral laws are no mere decorations, but meant to be obeyed at every cost, or else our democracy remains a mere mockery, totally unworthy of celebration as it is earmarked to be celebrated on June 12th.

“We urge our Party members and supporters not to be weary, even in spite of the fact that APC came to the Court on judgement day last week in a celebratory mood indicative of a prior knowledge of the verdict to be delivered, justice shall reign in our State and Nation.”

“How Can Oborevwori Be Leader Of Delta APC Ahead Of Omo-Agege?” – Senator Ndume

0
Senator Ali Ndume

By Adesina Soyooye

There are cracks in the Delta State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, which have continued to widen, especially, since the  Governor of the State, Sheriff Oborevwori, elected under the banner of the Peoples Democratic Party, defected to the Party.

Since then, the party has not been the same. The defection of Oborevwori instead of bringing the party  together seem to be dividing it. And the usually outspoken Senator, representing Borno South Senatorial District, Ali Ndume has pinpointed one of the reasons the Party is falling apart in the State.

In an interview with Channels Television aired on Sunday, Ali Ndume pointed at injustice and unfairness. He said the party has meted out injustice to the immediate past Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege treated him unfairly to the point of humiliation.

Trouble escalated when the Governor defected to the APC from the PDP. Before then, Omo-Agege, who was not only Deputy Senate President but its Governorship Candidate in the 2023 was the Leader of the Leader. In spite of his narrow and controversial defeat, he held on to his Party, kept hope alive and inspired members. He was the Leader of the Party in the State.

But, as soon as Oborevwori decamped from the PDP to the APC, the music changed. The APC dumped Omo-Agege and pronounced the Governor who knew next to nothing, and still knows next to nothing, about the APC, the leader of the Party in the State.

Ndume finds that sad and unfortunate. He lamented the humiliating way Omo-Agege was cast aside. In the interview with Channels Television he asked: “What has Omo-Agege done?

He worried about such shabby treatment considering Omo-Agege’s contributions and dedication to the party in the State.

He said: “I don’t know what is going to happen to people in Delta, like my distinguished colleague, Omo-Agege. After losing the election, which he thought he won, he struggled in the court and then kept the party going. All of a sudden, they brought the sitting governor (Sheriff Oborevwori) and said he is going to be the leader. What has that man, Omo-Agege, done?”

Maryam Abacha, The World Knows, Your Husband Stole Nigeria’s Future

0
Mariam Abacha and Sani Abacha

By Jeff Okoroafor

In recent years, Maryam Abacha, the widow of Nigeria’s former military dictator, General Sani Abacha, has repeatedly attempted to rewrite history by claiming her late husband was a selfless leader who did not steal from Nigeria.

Such assertions are not only false but an insult to the millions of Nigerians who suffered under his brutal and corrupt regime (1993–1998). The empirical evidence of Abacha’s looting is vast, well-documented by international investigators, and corroborated by recovered funds.

Sani Abacha’s regime was one of the most kleptocratic in modern history.

According to Transparency International, he stole an estimated $3 billion to $5 billion from Nigeria’s treasury, stashing the funds in foreign banks, shell companies, and offshore accounts. The World Bank and Swiss government have confirmed that Abacha’s family and associates systematically siphoned money meant for public infrastructure, healthcare, and education.

Nigeria and foreign governments have recovered over $3.6 billion of Abacha’s loot since 1999, with more still being traced. Key recoveries include $723 million from Switzerland in 2005, returned after a legal battle. Another $1.2 billion was seized from the U.S. and Jersey in 2020, linked to hidden accounts controlled by Abacha’s associates. The UK froze and returned £211 million in 2021, tied to his money laundering network, while Liechtenstein repatriated $150 million in 2014 after a decade-long legal process.

These funds were stolen through fraudulent contracts, inflated arms deals, and direct withdrawals from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) described Abacha’s scheme as “brazen acts of kleptocracy,” where he and his associates used fake security contracts, offshore fronts, and bribery to move billions out of Nigeria.

Declassified documents and court filings reveal Abacha’s methods. He withdrew $2.2 billion under the guise of “national security” spending, which was never accounted for. Companies like Snamprogetti, an Eni subsidiary, admitted in U.S. court to paying $180 million in bribes to Abacha’s regime for LNG contracts.

The Panama Papers and Pandora Papers exposed how Abacha’s family used British Virgin Islands, Luxembourg, and Swiss banks to hide stolen wealth. His son, Mohammed Abacha, was jailed for receiving $1.4 billion in illegal transfers, while his associate Bagudu, now Kebbi State Governor, helped launder funds.

Maryam Abacha has claimed her husband was “a good man who served Nigeria,” ignoring critical facts. Nigeria’s foreign reserves collapsed under Abacha, dropping from $9.8 billion in 1993 to less than $4 billion by 1998 despite high oil prices. Poverty skyrocketed, with over 70% of Nigerians living in extreme poverty by 1998 due to economic mismanagement. The UN, U.S., and EU sanctioned his regime for corruption and human rights abuses, further cementing his legacy as a plunderer.

The evidence is irrefutable: Sani Abacha was a thief on an industrial scale.

While Maryam Abacha may wish to rehabilitate her family’s name, the facts—backed by Interpol, court rulings, and recovered billions—speak for themselves.

Nigeria must continue pursuing every stolen dollar and ensure such grand theft never happens again.

Enough of the lies. The world knows the truth.

“We Have Been Used And Dumped” – Bayelsa APC Women Lament

0
Bayelsa APC Women

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

Bayelsa women have decried their continued neglect and exclusion by the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, despite their huge sacrifices during the 2023 electioneering campaigns.

The women under the aegis of Bayelsa All Progressive Congress Women Forum BAPCWF, led by a former Director General of NAPTIP Julie Donli, noted that despite the avalanche of professionals and seasoned  technocrats within its fold, the APC led Government at the centre has continued to act as if they do not exist.

In a statement issued on  Monday, June 9, 2025, in Abuja, the APC women group, urged the President to take steps to integrate and give its members their rightful place in his administration.

According to Donli, the group has enough qualified professionals to add value to the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Adminstration.

This is just as it urged the APC as a Party to factor its members into any future plans for  political appointments, noting that they weathered so  much storm and made significant contributions to the electoral success of the party.

Donli insisted that the women’s demand for a fair treatment is in tandem with the wider agitation for adequate representation of women in the governance space of the country.

The women also appealed to the President to make good his  electioneering promise of ensuring enough women participation in his administration.

Two years down the line, the women regretted that not enough has been done to incorporate them into the scheme of things despite the critical roles they played towards APC’s electoral success.

“We gave everything including time, resources, and energy with some paying the ultimate price just to ensure the victory of Mr President.

“Now, we are two years into the life of the adminstration we assisted in delivering, yet not a single one of us has been appointed ,or acknowledged.

“Our women have not been compensated for all their pains, and sacrifices. We feel neglected.

“As Bayelsa APC women, we want to advocate that we should be carried along in all the Party’s activities not just in the state ,but at the Federal level.

“We are closer to the party women at the grassroots, the largest voting bloc in the State, and so our demography should not be neglected”, Donli stated .

According to Donli, there is the need for the President to rebuild the trust and confidence of the women with a view to boosting their morale.

Kogi: Army Major Dies In Kidnappers’ Custody

Major Joe Ajayi

By Adesina Soyooye

A retired Army Major Joe  Ajayi has died in the custody of his Kidnappers.

Ajayi was kidnapped from his residence in Odo Ape, Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area, on May 21, at about 11.30pm.

His abductors who shot sporadically to scare people before  he was  taken away, placed a ransome to the tune of N50 million for his release.

He fell ill while he was still in custody but when he was kidnapped he was not with his medicines. When the family made srequest for his medicines to be sent to him, the kidnappers added more money for that.

However, when the family was unable to raise the money, and his health was failing badly, the Kidnappers reduced the amount to N10 million which was quickly  paid.

They were then directed to a location to pick him up. But, When they got there, they were  confronted with his dead body.

The devastated family has since deposited his body in a morgue.
