Ikeotuonye Was Just Being Wicked to Himself – Obienyem

0
John CDO Ikeotuonye

The Media Adviser to Mr. Peter Obi, former Governor of Anambra State and Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, Mr. Valentine Obienyem, has described Mr. John CDO Ikeotuonye as “a very wicked and shameless personality who would stop at nothing, not even crude falsehood, to malign others.”

Obienyem was reacting to Ikeotuonye’s recent comments on the True Talk Podcast, where he alleged, among other things, that Mr. Obi refused to assist former Nigerian football star, Kanu Nwankwo, with money for his heart surgery; that Obi was the highest shareholder in Interfact Breweries; and that he only appointed Catholics into public office during his tenure as Governor of Anambra State.

On the issue of Kanu Nwankwo, Obienyem dismissed the allegation as “not just wicked but satanic.” He explained that Kanu underwent his heart surgery in 1996, long before Obi became Governor. “It was public knowledge that Inter Milan, Kanu’s club at the time, paid the hospital bills. So, how could anyone with a shred of decency fabricate such lies? Even if one were commissioned by the Devil himself,” Obienyem stressed, “there must still be a limit to evil.”

Highlighting Obi’s record with sportsmen, Obienyem continued: “As Governor, Obi was number one in supporting sportsmen. He donated a bus to Enugu Rangers, instituted monthly stipends for their players, and personally assisted many ex-internationals. Just last year, when ex-Rangers star Tijani Babangida had an accident, Obi visited him. That same year, when a member of the old Rangers passed away, Obi bought land and built a house for his family. Before Christian Chukwu died, I personally paid in money on Obi’s behalf as part of his routine support. These are verifiable acts. For Ikeotuonye to deny them shows he has no conscience left.”

On the issue of Interfact Breweries, Obienyem explained that before the company set up facilities in Anambra, they had already been partners with Obi. “All Obi did was to use his influence to attract a multinational to invest in the state. Contrary to Ikeotuonye’s lies, Obi was never the highest shareholder. At that time, the Anambra State Government was the largest shareholder. Beyond taxes paid to the state, Interfact also paid dividends, created jobs for Anambra people, and boosted local businesses. Twisting such a positive legacy into a smear campaign is the height of desperation and wickedness.”

He went further to reveal that after Obi left office, his successor failed to retain Interfact’s planned expansion in Anambra, and the company did so in Ogun State. “The day the new facility was commissioned in Ogun, the Governor there was full of praises for the role Obi had played in attracting the multinational to Nigeria in the first place. Could you see the contrast?” Obienyem asked. “Where one leader’s vision was celebrated in another state, some small-minded traducers popped up by even the home governor  are even busy manufacturing lies to soil his name.”

Addressing the claim that Obi appointed only Catholics into his cabinet, Obienyem described it as “a deliberate falsehood peddled by men who thrive on religious bigotry.” He observed that critics conveniently ignore the fact that Obi remains the only Governor in Anambra’s history who never appointed his relatives into government positions or awarded contracts to his brothers, either directly or indirectly. He further cautioned that those who consistently use religion as a weapon “are among the most lethal enemies of Nigeria, for nothing destroys a nation faster than sectarian hatred.”

Providing statistics, Obienyem said:“In Obi’s government, the Chief of Staff, Commissioners for Economic Planning and Budget, Justice, Local Government, Health, Women Affairs, Youths and Sports, Lands, Finance, Science and Technology, Agriculture, as well as the Special Adviser on MDG and the two Permanent Secretaries in the Governor’s Office were all Anglicans. Out of six members of the Civil Service Commission, three were Anglicans. Out of the five Chief Judges during Obi’s tenure, four were Anglicans. The Customary Court of Appeal, which became functional under him, had two judges – both Anglicans. Out of the 10 maternities he built with the grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, four were located in Anglican parishes. Even the State Pilgrims Board was headed by a non-Catholic. Would any reasonable person, in the face of these facts, accuse Obi of exclusion?”

“It is pure and unadulterated idiocy for anybody, like Ikeotuonye, to claim that he once visited Government House under Obi and was denied attention simply because he did not attend CKC. That is the height of absurdity. Characters like his are pure fabrications of falsehood – men who survive by trading in lies and feeding on the ignorance of the gullible. Such a claim is not only childish but also a disgrace to reason and decency.

“What sort of man manufactures stories so brazenly, without shame or conscience? Ikeotuonye represents the worst of our public space: empty, malicious, reckless, and dangerous. He is the very embodiment of what happens when envy, ignorance, and mischief are given a microphone. To suggest that Peter Obi, a man who governed with unmatched inclusiveness, would reduce governance to a CKC old boys’ club is laughable lunacy, the kind that belongs to the garbage heap of public discourse.”

Taking a swipe at Ikeotuonye’s other remarks, Obienyem declared: “How can any serious-minded person claim that Tinubu has cleared most of Nigeria’s loans, that because Nigeria has become better, that travelling to other countries has reduced, that kidnapping has reduced under him, or that life today is better than last year? Only a man completely divorced from reality could make such pronouncements. It is pathetic, laughable, and insulting to the intelligence of Nigerians.”

Obienyem concluded by condemning Ikeotuonye’s praise of President Tinubu for “putting the North in their place.” He asked: “Which place? How is it commendable to reduce the potentials of a people? The North, as Obi has always maintained, remains strategically important and must be developed, not undermined.”

For Obienyem, Ikeotuonye’s comments are not only malicious but “a descent into the pit of dishonour, where falsehood and hate are weaponised against men who have lived transparently for the common good.” He added: “Such characters as Ikeotuonye are not fit for honest national discourse. They are enemies of truth, enemies of unity, and ultimately, enemies of Nigeria itself. The irony is glaring: while responsible leaders in other states openly celebrate Obi’s vision, men of warped conscience at home choose to tarnish it. That contrast says it all.”

Recapitalisation: PENCOM Stops Commercial Banks

0

The National Pension Commission, PENCOM, has directed Pension Fund Administrators, PFAs, not to invest in the ongoing capital raise of commercial banks, saying such move contradicts the Nigerian Pension Act.

The magazine report that some commercial banks have yet to meet the N500 billion recapitalization requirements of the Central bank of Nigeria, CBN, which has set March 31, 2026 as deadline for the banks to increase their capital.

Earlier, the CBN Governor Yemi Cardoso disclosed that eight banks have met their recapitalization requirements.

“I am pleased to note that a significant number of banks have raised the required capital through rights issues and public offerings well ahead of the 2026 deadline. I believe that the banking sector is in a strong position to support Nigeria’s economic recovery by enabling access to credit for MSMES and supporting investment in critical sectors of our economy,” Cardoso said.

The banks, according to the magazine’s checks are Access Holdings, Zenith Bank, Stanbic IBTC, Wema Bank, Lotus Bank, Greenwich Merchant Banks, Jaiz Bank and Providus Bank

With less than eight months to the deadline set for the banks by the Cardoso-led CBN, some banks according to sources in the sector  are currently in a horse race, trying to get funding to raise their capital in line with the apex bank’s directive.

“Some banks have approached some Pension Firms for investment, because of the billions in their kitty which are currently laying fallow. The bank managers think the funds can be invested in their shares.

As at June last year, PENCOM disclosed that  its total pension funds had peaked at over N20 trillion.

PENCOM however stated that the huge funds cannot be invested in Additional  Tier 1  capital of commercial banks, which it noted does not have maturity date and incentives to redeem.

The warning was contained in a circular issued to PFAs by the NPC Director, Surveillance Department, A.M. Saleem, stressing that Additional Tier-1, AT1 Capital of Deposit Money Banks falls short of Pension Act requirements.

PENCOM said in the circular that “AT1 as approved by Central Bank of Nigeria regulations ‘is perptual, i.e., there is no maturity date and there are no incentives to redeem.’ This provision is contrary to Section 2.4 of the Regulations on Investment of Pension Fund Assets, which states that ‘PFAs shall not invest Pension Fund Assets in instruments that are subject to any type of prohibitions or limitations on the sale or purchase of such instrument, except open/close-end/hybrid funds and specialist investment funds allowed by these Regulations.’

“Arising from the foregoing, PFAs cannot invest pension fund assets in Additional Tier 1 Capital instruments issued by Deposit Money Banks.”

The Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN) has announced plans to establish a University in furtherance of the association’s educational programme.

The organization’s National Amirah, Mrs. Rafiah Idowu Sanni, disclosed this on Wednesday in Kaduna during a press conference to usher in its 40th-anniversary celebrations and an international conference.

She announced that the passion for education is driving the new projects, including a School of Nursing in Ibadan by the Oyo State chapter and ongoing plans for a FOMWAN University.

The press conference primarily outlined plans for FOMWAN’s International Conference with the theme: “Empowering Muslim Women: Climate Resilience, Sustainability, and Community Development – Celebrating FOMWAN’s Achievements.”

Mrs. Sanni explained that the theme reflects FOMWAN’s commitment to equipping women to meet future challenges by combining Islamic values with practical solutions to safeguard the environment and ensure inclusive development.

Celebrating four decades of work, the National Amirah highlighted FOMWAN’s foundational pillars, which include Da’awah (propagation of Islam), Education, Community Development, Healthcare Initiatives, and Capacity Building.

The conference, which begins its formal opening on Thursday, is expected to host delegates from the UK, the US, and various African nations to strengthen unity and foster global collaboration.

FOMWAN, the umbrella body for Muslim Women’s Organisations in Nigeria founded in 1985, is active in all 36 states and the FCT, with a presence in over 700 Local Government Areas.

It serves as a unified voice on matters concerning women, children, and their communities.

On the international scene, FOMWAN  condemned the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, labelling it a “genocide” and called for global solidarity to end the bloodshed.

It particularly frowned at the “indiscriminate killings of women, children, and journalists, acts which violate every standard of humanity and international law.”

LASG Replies ‘Peller’: You Must Pay Tax

0
Peller Tik Tok

The Lagos State Government, LASG , has responded to a remark by popular social media entertainer, Habeeb Hamzat popular as  Peller, to the effect that the state government is demanding N36 million tax from him.

Reacting to the report, the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu on Tax and Revenue, Abdulkabir Ogungbo, said anyone with legitimate income in the state must ensure that he/she pays tax to the state government.

Recall that Peller had during a live stream with singer Tobechukwu Okoh aka Peruzzi, accused the state government of demanding the sum from him, saying it was to high for him to pay.

“The task force said I should pay N36m in tax. I swear to Almighty Allah, I don’t have anything. I only came into the limelight last year. Are you, Peruzzi, even paying tax, and how much is it? Why should I pay N36m? What does that even mean?” Peller lamented.

Speaking to Punch on the issue, Ogungbo said it within the state government powers to collect tax from anyone making legitimate earnings in the state.

“I need to take a look at this particular context in question. But generally, the LIRS is an autonomous body saddled with the responsibility of assessing and giving the best judgment on behalf of the government. We may need to engage the LIRS as an office to know about this particular case. But within the context of personal income, anybody who is legitimately earning, Section 24 of the Nigerian Constitution stipulates that when you earn your living and income legitimately, you are meant to declare that honestly to the authorities. So the context around the size, the quantum and what have you, needs to be properly investigated and we can revert,” he said.

When quizzed on taxation for content creators, the SA explained that there are new reforms guiding digital assets and virtual transactions.

Ogungbo said, “Naturally, the law allows for personal income tax, meaning that when you earn a living or earn anything from what you do legitimately, you are supposed to pay tax. So from that context, irrespective of the location, either virtually or physically, you’re meant to remit your tax to the approved authority, which is the LIRS. But from the context of around digital assets and their complementary vocations, which mainly talk about this virtual transaction, the new reforms take care of that. But as it relates to personal income tax, irrespective, you’re meant to pay tax.”

He added, “So it’s about the legitimacy of your residence, where you stay. When you stay here, we assume that your infrastructure usage and otherwise, you earn it. You can be here and be having online business, so for that reason, if you earn honestly here, and there is no proof that you pay the same tax to another jurisdiction, for instance, maybe you’re based outside the country, you have to prove to the authority here that you were paying to the other state or other national. But if your income, which you earn here virtually or online and you stay here, and you want to do something with the Lagos State Government, then you’re bound to remit your tax here.

“But I do not have this particular case on my table for me to determine. Because we have a body (the LIRS) that is autonomous and that is very efficient in what they do. So Let me investigate and revert to you.”

This is not the first time the state government has clashed with popular entertainers on the issue. In 2023, popular Nollywood actress, Iyabo Ojo had declined to pay the state government over N18 million demanded form her for tax.

Insisting that she was ready to be arrested Ojo had described the demand as outrageous, saying her income was not as huge as people may have thought.

“Make i go thief ni? I ask again, “How do you (sic) people come up with such outrageous bills,” Ojo queried.

“I don’t know how much you think I get paid. Hence, your team will come up with this conclusion.”

“I have single-handedly raised my kids and so many others, plus myself without a single help from the government. Yet you feel so entitled to reap over 100 per cent from where you did not sow.”

“Nothing is working right in this country, but yet you feel the need to take from where you have not sown.”

Assault On NYSC Member: Soludo Must Prosecute Vigilante Operatives- NBA

0
Brutalization Of Female Corps Member By Anambra Vigilante

The Nigerian Bar Association ,NBA, has called for the arrest and prosecution of vigilantes operatives in Anambra state involved in the assault on a member of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Jennifer Elobor.

The NBA in a statement by its President, Afam Osigwe, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, urged the state government to ensure that the operatives were seriously sanctioned for attacking the NYSC member.

The development followed a viral video, on Tuesday, showing the state vigilante operatives attacking Miss Elobor and other corps members, at the Corpers Lodge where they were resident, after they were allegedly accused of being internet fraudsters.

Elobor was beaten and stripped naked by security operatives, while being arrested by the opeartives, an action that attracted serious condemnations from not a few Nigerians, including Peter Obi, the 2023 Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, LP, who said he was ashamed and heartbroken over the cruel act melted on Elobor by the state’s vigilante operatives.

Reacting, NBA said the action of the operatives was in violation of the fundamental human rights of the corper, an “inhumane and degrading” treatment that should not be condoned in any descent society, adding that the arrest should have been done in a more civilised manner even if Elobor was found to have committed the alleged offence.

The NBA however applauded the state government for acting swiftly by arresting the operatives involved, noting that their prosecution must be made public to ensure that justice is not only done, but seen to have been done by Nigerians.

It has therefore directed the Anambra state chapter of the NYSC to follow up on the issue to ensure that the victims get justice, and those found to have violated their rights be made accountable for their actions.

Part of the statement: “Nobody, whether suspected of an offence or entirely innocent, deserves to be subjected to such barbaric treatment,

“Even where an arrest is to be made, the law provides clear procedures to ensure that the dignity of the individual is protected,

“Justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done, to serve as redress for Ms. Elobor and a deterrent against similar abuses in the future.

Meanwhile, the magazine reports that the Charles Soludo-led administration in the state has suspended the operatives involved in the attack, and has commenced full investigation.

Obi while reacting via his verified X handle, said he was seriously disturbed by the vigilante act of wickedness and savagery.

“I strongly condemn this act of wickedness and savagery. No society should ever tolerate the abuse, humiliation, and dehumanisation of its citizens — least of all the vulnerable and women. What happened is not only a violation of law and morality, but also a direct assault on our collective humanity. That young girl could have been anyone’s daughter, sister, or even mine,” Obi stated.

Calling for urgent action, Obi urged the authorities to ensure that those responsible are apprehended, prosecuted, and made examples to deter future acts of barbarism. He further appealed for stronger safeguards and communal values to protect the vulnerable and uphold human dignity.

“We must awaken our conscience and work collectively to build a society where justice is swift, compassion is active, and the dignity of every human being – especially the young and vulnerable – is inviolable,” he said, stressing that “our humanity must always come first. Without it, we are nothing but a people adrift in cruelty.”

In a statement issued in Owerri and personally signed by him, Senator Uzodimma lamented that Mama Lydia passed on at a time when her wise counsel and maternal presence were still greatly needed.

“Terrorism Thrive When Those Arrested Are Recycled Back Into Society  Without Accountability” – Obi

By Charles Igbo

Mr Peter Obi, Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 Election has praised Nigeria’s Security Agencies for the arrest of two Al Qaeda terrorists who have been on international wanted list.

National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu broke the heartwarming news of the arrest of both men Mahmud Muhammadu  Usman and Nahmud al- Nigeri, in a delicate coordinated operation by Nigeria’s Security Agencies.

While commending the feat, Obi, pointed out that arresting criminals and recycling them back into the society is a dangerous exercise.

He said: “However, beyond arrests, we must remain vigilant. Terrorism and violent criminality thrive when justice is not served, when those arrested are recycled back into society without accountability.”

The Nigerian Government had been accused of approving the enlistment of  purported repented terrorists  into the Nigerian Army.  But it is an allegation that  both the Federal Government and the leadership of the Army vehemently denied.

But in a post on his X page later, Obi acknowledged the gallantry of Security Agents and urged the Government should eqiup them better, and train them better, and motivate them better.

Following is the post.

“Sustaining the Gains Against Terrorism and Banditry

I commend the Nigerian Security Agencies for their recent achievements in the fight against terrorism, kidnapping  and banditry. This is indeed a remarkable feat and a step in the right direction in our collective struggle against insecurity and in restoring peace to our dear country.

“Our gallant officers and men in uniform have shown courage often under very difficult conditions. Their sacrifices remind us that Nigeria can – and must – be safe for all citizens. I salute their professionalism and urge that they be better equipped, trained and motivated to sustain their gains.

“Let this victory remind us that security is the foundation of every meaningful development. A secure Nigeria is possible, and together, we must support our security agencies with the right leadership, resources, and political will to end the reign of terror in our land.

A new Nigeria is Possible.

Late Chief Tony Anenih’s Son, Ose, Resigns From PDP

Ose Anenih

By Adesina Soyooye

Ose Anenih, son of one of the founding fathers of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, late Chief Tony Anenih, has resigned from the Party which earned his father the alias: Mr. Fix it.

Ose quit the party in a letter he addressed to the Chairman of his Arue Ward 3, Uromi, Edo State, dated August 18, 2025.

In the letter, he said his decision to resign was not made lightly. He, however, said he would remain engaged in civic and intellectual discourse to help strengthen good governance and improve the lives of the people.

His words: “At this point in my life, my duty now lies first with my family and with other responsibilities that demand my full attention. However, my commitment to Nigeria’s progress remains unshaken.”

Given the state of the PDP in Edo State since it lost the Governorship election to the All Progressives Congress, APC, it is not quite surprising that Anenih jnr. resigned from the Party, especially after his public altercation with another chieftain of the Party, former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido over the role his father, Anenih snr, played, or dud not play in the abortion of the June 12, 1993 Presidential Election won by late Chief Moshood Abiola but sadly canceled by the then Military Regime headed by General Ibrahim Babangida.

Anenih Snr. was the National Chairman of  the Social Democratic Party, SDP, the Party under which Abiola contested for the Presidential seat.

APC Suspends Gbenga Daniel As Its Member

0
Otunba Gbenga Daniel

By Adesina Soyooye

Gbenga Daniel, a serving Senator, and two-term Governor of Ogun State, has been suspended by the Ogun State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

The State Working Committee of the Party, according to its Chairman, Chief Yemi Sanusi, endorsed the indefinite suspension of the Senator, as earlier recommended and done by his Ward, because he refused to appear before a Disciplinary Committee investigating him for alleged anti-party activities.

The report of the Disciplinary Committee set up by his Ward 4, Sagamu, indicted him. Since he was absent, the Ward said it relied on alleged documentary evidence and  witnesses to his anti-party activities.

Suspended along with Daniel is Honourable Kunle Folarin of Ward 6, Sagamu. Same allegation of anti-party activities was leveled against him, and he too ignored the Disciplinary Committee set up to investigate him.

Endorsing the recommendation of the Committe for the indefinite suspension placed on both men, the SWC said it did so to preserve discipline in the party as well as its integrity.

However, not a few people insist that Daniel’s suspension is as a result of his very untidy relationship with the State Governor, Prince Dapo  Abiodun. The two men have been entangled in a political squabble which upped a few days ago when the State Government gave an order for the demolition of Daniel’s properties   – his residence and hotel. He was forced to quickly secure a Court order which has temporarily halted the demolition order.

Opinion, however, is strong that the suspension of Daniel and Folarin is likely to be quashed by the APC National Headquarters.

Daniel was a two-term Governor of the State under the PDP. In 2019, he was the Director General of the Presidential Campaign of  PDP’s Candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

On Atiku’s loss to the now late President Muhammadu Buhari, Daniel shocked both the PDP and Atiku by defecting to the APC.
