Gwandu Emirate: Tussle Between Two Cousins Ends As Jokolo Accepts Supreme Court Judgment

0
Emir Of Gwandu - Al-Mustapha Haruna Jokolo

By Adesina Soyooye

With the acceptance by deposed Emir of Gwandu, retired Major Al-Mustapha Jokolo, the Supreme Court judgment which finally put an end to his struggle to regain the throne, the fight for the revered throne between two Cousins has come to an end.

The tussle for the throne has been on for 20 years between Jokolo who was deposed by the Kebbi State Government, allegedly, according to some people,  for being too outspoken, defiant and anti-Government, and his cousin, retired Major General Muhammadu Iliyasu Bashir who was appointed in his place as the Emir of Gwandu Emirate.

But in a split judgment of three against two, the Supreme Court overturned the rulings of the lower Courts – Kebbi State High Court and the Court of Appeal – both of which ruled in favour of Jokolo, and affirmed Iliyasu-Bashar the Emir of Gwandu.

To put a final seal on the 20-year old legal tussle for the throne, Counsel to the deposed Jokolo, disclosed that he and his Client accept the Supreme Court judgement and will not apply for a review.

In the split decision the Supreme Court ruled that the Kebbi State High Court, which affirmed Jokolo as Emir and thus his reinstatement, had no jurisdiction to hear the case.

It held that Jokolo did not comply with the requirement to first, submit a formal complaint to the Governor before approaching the Court.

Bashar, who is a cousin to the deposed Jokolo,  contested the rulings in favour of Jokolo’s reinstatement through his Counsel, Yakubu Maikyau, SAN, against both Jokolo and the Kebbi State Government.

Jokolo’s lawyer, Sylvester Imhanobe, in his reaction to the Supreme Court ruling, disclosed they would not seek a judicial review. He noted that Jokolo has already accepted the decision in good faith.

Imhanobe, however, said he was surprised that the majority decision relied heavily on “Section 4 of the Chiefs (Appointment and Deposition) Law of Kebbi State, while their case was based on Section 6, which does not require a pre-action complaint as it relates to deposition, not the selection of a new Emir.

“Our case concerned deposition under Section 6, not Section 4. We did not invoke Section 4 at any point,” he posited.

The Honourable Justice Emmanuel Agim who delivered the lead judgment,  insisted that “Jokolo ought to have first submitted a formal complaint to the Governor as stipulated by law before seeking court intervention.” According to him, the suit was premature and thus renders the judgment of the lower Courts null and void for lack of jurisdiction.

But in a dissenting ruling, Justice Ibrahim Mohammed Salawa disagreed with the majority. He affirmed the lower courts’ decisions and dismissed the cross-appeals. He, also stated that “the governor should act according to the law and due process.”

In her own dissenting judgment, Justice Uwani Abba-Aji emphasised the need for “the Supreme court to deliver substantial justice to the people.”

2027: APC Affirms Support For Shettima, Says Tinubu Can’t Dump Him

0
Tinubu and Kashim Shetima

Vice President Kassim Shettima will still be President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s running mate in 2027, the All Progressives Congress, APC, has said.

The ruling party is reacting to the suggestion that the president is planning to dump Shettima for another Vice Presidential candidate, in accordance with the demand of some vested interests in the party, including some state governors elected on the platform of the party.

According to the APC National  Vice Chairman (South-east) Dr Ijeoma Arodiogbu, the party is not contemplating shopping for another candidate to replace Shettima who he described as an “asset’ to the ruling party, saying the party’s opponents are just trying to cause unnecessary distraction.

He explained that President Tinubu and Shettima have a solid relationship despite the ongoing rumour of an existing feud between them, and the pressure on the president to shop for another candidate for his re-election.

Arodiogbu: “I’m hearing that for the first time. There’s a solid working relationship between President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima.

“Shettima is a key asset—intelligent, focused, and deeply involved in this administration. These rumours are likely just political noise meant to create division.”

Amid the ongoing rumour a northern advocacy group, Concerned Northern Ummah had recently called on President Tinubu to chose a christian as his running mate for the next presidential election, saying the president cannot afford to ignore the sacrifice made for him by Christians in the region for him to win in the 2023 election.

The group made this known in a statement signed by its convener, Bala Duguri.

The group said it arrived at the decision after “undertaken wider consultations across the northern states”adding that choosing a Christian as running mate to Tinubu will be  in the spirit of fairness, equity, and justice.”

Duguri: “Our group has undertaken wider consultations across the northern states with different Islamic organisations in a bid to speak with one voice over the political direction in the APC-led administration. The outcome is very encouraging,” Duguri said.

“We have carefully considered the present situation of our country, coupled with deep concern for the well-being of our people, in the spirit of fairness, equity, and justice.

“The sacrifices made by our fellow Christian brothers and sisters in the 2023 presidential elections, in the spirit of unity and national progress, need to be acknowledged. It’s time for Muslim political actors to make similar sacrifices.

“As a Muslim organisation, we use this opportunity to call on all potential Muslim nominees for the vice presidential slot to make the necessary sacrifice by dropping their ambitions for the good of the country.

“After extensive consultations across religious, ethnic, and political lines in the North, we believe the most appropriate step forward is for a Northern Christian to be selected as the Vice Presidential candidate in 2027,”

MURIC Protests Lack Of Free Train Ride For Muslims During Eid-El-Kabir

Professor Ishaq Akintola - MURIC

By Ayodele Oni

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has observed that Muslims are being treated like second class citizens in the country , despite that Nigeria is currently being run by politicians of same fate.

MURIC specifically accused both the Federal Government  and the Nigerian Railway Corporation of being unfair to Muslims particularly, regarding the way and manner free train rides are declared during religious festivals.

MURIC claimed that there is gross disparity and astounding imbalance in the manner free train rides are declared for Christmas, whereas Salah attracts no such dividend of democracy.

This was contained in a statement issued on Thursday, by the Executive Director of MURIC, Prof Ishaq Akintola.

MURIC, in a statement notes “A strange scenario is currently playing out in the Nigerian socio-cultural landscape. Whereas the Federal Government (FG) offered free train rides during Christmas, it has maintained a pregnant silence on whether the same handout will be offered during this Salah.

“Interestingly enough, FG also extended the period of free train rides beyond two weeks in the early days of January 2025.

“However, the chairman of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced an extension of train services during the Salah period. Yes, extension of train services for which commuters have to pay, not free train ride,  is what Nigerian Muslims deserve.

“This extension cannot even scratch the surface. Neither is it comparable to the over-pampering luxury of the Christmas period.

“As part of its corporate social responsibility to Nigerians, MURIC has a duty to interrogate the performance of government in this area. We note that there is gross disparity and astounding imbalance in the manner free train rides are declared for Christmas whereas Salah attracts no dividends of democracy.

“We are therefore constrained to ask, ‘Is free train meant for Christians alone? Who is in control of this government? Are Muslims really being carried along? Are we on a wild goose chase?

“FG appears to be drumming it into the ears of Nigerian Muslims that equal rights in Nigeria is an illusion, a myth, a mirage. It appears that all religions are equal in Nigeria, but Christianity is more equal than any other faith.

“We have been politically marginalized, economically shortchanged and socially ostracized. We have a Muslim president in a Muslim-Muslim ticket yet we cannot enjoy the same social infrastructural facility that Christians are given on a platter of gold.

“We are constrained to ask who is in control of this government? If a Muslim is in control, why are Muslims being treated like lepers?

“We cannot even enjoy simple privileges and common dividends of democracy. Ordinary free train ride which FG begged Christians to take is not even being offered to Muslims. We have been treated like third class citizens in our own country.

“We have been marooned. We have been orphaned. We have been oppressed.

If this is an oversight, we demand an apology from FG. If it is deliberate and official arrogance and an exhibition of executive impunity, we will assume that government is merely flexing its muscles.

“We are not unaware of the extensive powers of government which it can decide to wield as it craves. But you can drag a Muslim to the mosque, at dawn, by noon or after sunset to join the congregational Salat but his special prayer point after Salat can only be determined by him.

“The lopsidedness of the Nigerian system is becoming more and more glaring by the day making the need for an overhauling of the old asymmetrical colonial heritage more compelling, allbeit through rational and constitutional means.

“We believe that two wrongs cannot make a right.

We therefore demand a total and categorical overhauling of all religious matters like our weekend system, seasonal holidays, etc that were fixed and skewed pro-Christian by the colonial master.

“We should have reviewed all these immediately after independence in 1960. This neo imperialist system cannot sustain itself talk less of perpetuating an enduring, just and balanced ecosystem. All neocolonial vestiges must go.”

Eid-el El Kabir: President Tinubu Assures Nigerians Of “Brighter Horizon”

Bola Ahmed Tinubu - President

By Ayodele Oni

President Bola Tinubu has assured Nigerians that they will soon start to enjoy gains of the Administration’s economic reforms.

The president, in his Eid-el Kabir message to Nigerians stated that “Together, we have weathered challenging times and are approaching a brighter horizon.

Tinubu declared that “Though the journey has not been easy, and some doubted our direction, the resilience of public and private sector leaders, along with the steadfast support of most Nigerians, is yielding results.

“I assure you that the toughest days are behind us. We are entering a new era of renewed hope and prosperity that we promised two years ago.”

Text of theb President’s speech “I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Nigerian Muslims and the global Muslim Ummah as we celebrate this year’s Eid-el-Kabir.

“Eid-el-Kabir represents the high point of the sacred first ten days of Dhul Hijjah, a period filled with opportunities for acts of worship and good deeds.

“It is a time for gratitude to Almighty Allah for His countless mercies upon us as individuals and a nation. While this festival is marked with joy and celebration, its true significance lies much deeper: Eid calls us to reflect on its core values of sacrifice, devotion, and selflessness.

“To truly honour Eid, we must embody these virtues, just as Prophet Ibrahim (AS) exemplified complete submission to Allah’s will and as our Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) has taught us. Let this sacred occasion renew our commitment to these ideals.

“Eid-el-Kabir also reminds us of our responsibilities beyond faith: to show resilience, tolerance, compassion, and dedication to the progress of our beloved country.

“I reaffirm my commitment to these values and express my deep appreciation for the faith, patience, and perseverance Nigerians show as we implement bold reforms. Together, we have weathered challenging times and are approaching a brighter horizon.

“We may not yet be where we aspire to be, but I urge all Nigerians not to lose hope. Let us hold on to our faith and persevere.

“Our reforms are gaining traction, with key economic indicators now moving in a positive direction. Soon, all will feel the benefits.

“The ultimate objective of these reforms is not just to improve statistics but to transform lives and set Nigeria firmly on the path to sustainable development.

“There are no quick fixes, but we are committed to repairing the foundations of our economy once and for all.

“Our administration will continue acting in the nation’s best interest, ensuring that the gains we are recording translate into improving people’s lives.

“We crafted our Renewed Hope Agenda to bring prosperity to every Nigerian, and we remain steadfast in our pursuit of it.

“As we celebrate today, remember that Eid-el-Kabir enjoins love, compassion, and generosity for all, regardless of faith or background. Let us care for one another’s well-being during this season and always.

“In this instance, I recall recent sad developments in our country, particularly the Wednesday, May 28 heavy flooding, which submerged the market town of Mokwa, Niger State, causing deaths and destruction of properties and creating an untold humanitarian crisis.

“Let us pray for the repose of the souls of those who lost their lives and fortitude for their relations. Let us join hands with the government to bring succour to the people of Mokwa.

“Finally, as we observe this Eid, let us continue our prayers for our front-line officers, who risk their lives for our safety and security.

“Let us pray for our leaders at all levels and our country. Let us pray for peace in our tumultuous world of troubles and uncertainties. Let us dedicate this sacred celebration to seeking God’s guidance and blessings for our country.

“May those who have more remember those in need, sharing kindness and support as true brothers and sisters. Let the virtues of perseverance, sacrifice, loyalty, faith, and shared humanity bind us closer.

“May the joy and blessings of Eid-ul-Adha multiply in our lives and the life of our great nation. May Almighty Allah accept our worship and devotion as acts of Ibadah, and may His blessings be with us always.”

Babangida Mourns Prof Jubril Aminu, Says He Was Illustrious Leader

0
Ibrahim Babangida - IBB

By Ayodele Oni

Former Military President, General Ibrahim Babangida (rtd), has remarked that Prof Jubril Aminu  played his part as an illustrious leader of this great country, and an educationist par excellence.

He described the death of one of his Ministers as a huge loss to him, stressing that he will be missed by both family members and friends who had opportunity to cross his path.

General Babangida, in a statement he personally signed, said he received the news of the sudden demise of his good friend, associate, compatriot and patriotic Nigerian, Professor Jibril Aminu, with a heavy heart.

Babangida noted that he least expected this, even though the highly intelligent and cerebral Prof Jibril Aminu battled with ill-health in the latter part of his sojourn.

The former Military President noted that the late Prof Aminu was still his eloquent self each time they spoke, going down memory lane, about their encounters and interventions in the public space.

In the words of Babangida; “He was one of our reservoirs of knowledge who was deeply steeped in the affairs of nation and was ready to break the old traditions to make room for new initiatives and innovations.

“Both as Honourable Minister for Petroleum and Honourable Minister for Education, Prof. Jibril Aminu was an awesome enigma who created a niche for himself and left huge footprints in the sands of time.

“Aminu was an embodiment of class and distinction, whose sense of patriotism was eternal. For me, this is a huge loss.

“No doubt, Prof Aminu has played his part as an illustrious leader of this great country, and an educationist par excellence whose sense of duty was exemplary.

“His love for the country was exceptional and his services to the nation were priceless. He will be missed by both family members and friends who had opportunity to cross his path.

“He was a devout Muslim who exemplified his humanity by sheer love, care, kindness and solidarity. He was a team player who ensured that the right things were done to deepen conversations around governance for the good of all.

“He was a confidant whose sincerity and honesty of purpose was infectious.

“I will miss him so passionately. Nigeria has lost a great mind, an intellectual of no mean repute, a cerebral educationist who made his mark in the course of serving his fatherland and also impacting knowledge to a great majority of those who encountered him.

“May his soul rest in perfect peace. May Allah, in His infinite mercy, grant his soul aljanah firdaus.

“Rest in peace, our dear Professor of quintessential emanations. May Allah grant his family the fortitude to bear this painful loss,” Babangida enthused.

Police Moves To Hunt Down Perpetrators Of Imo Deadly Attacks

Police on Duty

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Imo State Police Command  on Thursday, June 5, 2025, vowed to track down all those behind the spate of violence attacks on Agwa Community in Oguta Local Council of the State.

A fresh attack on Wednesday, June 4, by suspected hoodlums, according to a statement from the Command’s spokesperson, Henry Okoye, left three persons dead, and several others injured.

The Police authorities informed that a crack team of operatives from the Tactical Unit of the Command has been deployed to work in concert with personnel from other security agencies, including members of Local Vigilante Groups, to fish out the perpetrators of the  disturbances.

Okoye explained that the security team will beam its searchlight on some targeted spots, including forests, bushes, and other suspected flashpoints and criminal enclaves.

The coordinated efforts, he noted are primarily aimed at taking the fight to the criminal dens with a view to smoking them out.

This is just as the State Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, condemned the spate of senseless violence attacks on innocent and law abiding residents.

He, therefore, directed the State Criminal Investigation  Department to conduct a thorough inquest to unravel the circumstances surrounding the orgy of attacks.

While sympathizing with the  relations of families relations, and friends of the victims of the disturbances, the CP reaffirmed the unwavering commitment of the Command to protecting  residents of the affected communities, through enhanced security measures.

He, also, urged the public  to volunteer information that could assist operatives in their investigations and apprehension of the perpetrators of the violent attacks .

Obasanjo, Jonathan, Buhari Were Not Courageous Leaders – Wike

0
Nyesom Wike - FCT Minister

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Minister of  the Federal Capital Territory FCT, Nyesom Wike, on Thursday, June 5, 2025, hailed  President Bola Tinubu as a bold and courageous leader who dared where others before him quivered.

This is as the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi described Wike, as a political enigma that deserves to be studied by academics and research scholars

At the 2025 Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Distinguished Personality Lecture held in Ife, Osun State, Wike, who has been in the eye of the storm for what not a few perceive as his determined quest to kill and bury his political party, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, also waved aside claims of the existence of a cabal within the Tinubu’s cabinet.

According to him, the driving force behind Tinubu’s Presidency is his capacity to take bold and courageous decisions and not the influence of a non-existent cabal

Referencing the removal of petroleum products subsidy, the PDP chieftain and immediate past Governor of Rivers state lauded the President for doing what former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Goodluck Jonathan, and Mohammadu Buhari could not do.

” He ( Tinubu) has shown that he has the courage. Under Tinubu, there is nothing like cabal .This is a President that is truly in charge” Wike stated.

In his key note lecture, the FCT Minister regretted that former leaders of the country could not muster enough courage to remove the parasitic and corruption-ridden petroleum products subsidy, noting that the  failure to do so contributed in no small measure to the economic quagmire Nigeria is facing.

He, also, expressed disappointment that past Presidents of the country were not bold enough to unify the  foreign exchange regime.

Wike noted that many people unjustly benefitted from the lose subsidy regime at the detriment of the economic wellbeing of the country.

According to him, same people could have still been milking the country had President Tinubu not demonstrated enough political will to end the infamy.

He expressed the optimism that despite the draw- backs of many years, the country can still rediscover itself and, once again, occupy its natural pre-eminence position in Africa, and globally giving the right leadership.

Such new Nigeria, he insisted, will not just fall from heaven, but will require bold, courageous, and focused leadership.

Wike berated critics, and opponents alike calling for his removal as a Minister.

This is just as he maintained that ground rent debtors must fulfill their statutory obligations or have themselves to blame for the consequences.

Meanwhile, the Ooni of Ife, in his address at the occasion noted that it has remained a big puzzle how Wike from the rival PDP has been able to weather the storm in an APC Government.

He urged Nigerian Universities and political science scholars to commence the understanding of the currents that have made it possible for the FCT Minister to hold his own amidst a strange arrangement.

“For your career, I will particularly say that I give a very strong honour to the father of the Nation, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“You belong to different political parties, yet are able to work together. You are part of this Government.

“It is still a mystery. I don’t even know how it happened. For me, it is something that Universities should be studying, and I mean it.

“It is very important. Hate him, or like him, what will be will be. Wike is a politician to be studied. I don’t know how he has managed to be actively relevant for about 20 years now.

“Though, not everybody will like Wike, but some of us have a lot of respect for him because of his fearlessness ” Ooni stated.

OPINION: Understanding the Flight Announcer

0
Azu Ishiekwene
Mr Azu Ishiekwene

By Azu Ishiekwene

Boarding announcements were not an issue when I used to commute in Lagos by danfo, the ubiquitous yellow buses, or molue, the mass-transit lorries, which were improvised for public transportation.

The conductors often had a melodious and entertaining way of calling passengers that was enjoyable to hear. They called out in a drawl, accompanying each announcement with a warning for passengers to board with their change in hand or risk a “forced marriage,” which meant giving a fixed sum, usually a bank note, to two or more passengers to share at disembarkation.

Flying is a luxury – or should be – with no room for bus conductors and their outrageous threats of forced passenger marriages. But vehicle conductors across the country might be surprised to know that, however lowly their jobs, there are several areas where they do far better than their cousins at airports across the country, who, for want of a better description, carry the elegant titles of flight announcers, when quite frankly, they perform the job of conductors.

A conductor’s life

There is no intention to deride or demean, please. Conductors, whether at the motor park, opera, or the airport, provide the vital link that helps us understand and enjoy the moment, as we makea rite of passage.

But that vital function is threatened at many airports nationwide, even among crew announcers onboard several flights. I could have missed a recent flight from Asaba to Abuja because I wasn’t sure what the announcer said: “This is a broadenhannouncement on Flight PA7861 from Hum, Hum, Hum, to Ham, Ham, Ham…all persongers on this flight should phulease proceed to the gate to broad…a phust departure call phulease…”

I didn’t understand. The babble was neither British, American, nor trans-Atlantic. It was not even Ingili-Igbo (a variety of standard British English mixed with Igbo phonemes) as Chief ZebruddayaOkorigwe-Nwogbo alias 4.30 might have called it in the New Masquerade. It wasindecipherable. But I noticed some passengers rushing to line up or scampering in different directions. I stayed put, waiting for a second, hopefully clearer announcement. It was the same thing.

Accra bound?

I looked at my colleague with whom I was travelling and asked, “Did you hear what the announcer said?” “I think she said something like it’s a flight to Accra,” he responded. “No way,” I replied. “You mean that flights now depart from the Asaba Airport to Accra? And see the number of passengers lining up.”

Time was ticking. We hurried to the line, which is often the typical response when there’s no airline staff in sight, where a passenger smiled a knowing smile and told us it was a flight to Abuja, not Accra. At that time, something that sounded like the final boarding announcement had been made.

I had experienced a similar thing on my outbound trip from Abuja, where the flight announcer seemed more concerned about how her fake imitation of an Oyinboaccent than the clarity of what she was saying. I got up twice to ask at the desk.

Suupri…suupri…suupri

The second time, the announcer who faked an Oyinbo accent told me in plain, audible language that my flight had not been announced. “Is it impossible to announceas you have just told me, Ma?” I asked. She smiled and adjusted the PAS: “This is a boreding announcement on Flight PA74862 from suupri, suupri, suupri, to ham, ham, ham…all persongers on this flight should phulease proceed to the boreding gate…a phust departure call phulease…”

I gave up.

Sometimes, the noise in the departure lounge can make things worse. At other times, the lack of coordination and/or the poor sound quality of the PAS can also compound the problem. There’s hardly such a thing as a level key. The volume is too high, too low or a garbled screeching static sound. As for the tone of voice, that’s something else altogether.

What was that, pilot?

It happens onboard, too. For aerophobics like me, a pilot’s calming voice before departure, midflight, or shortly before landing has a huge calming effect. Often, however, you’ll have to strain to hear. There’s such a deafening noise in the inflight PAS that it’s difficult to decipher what even the pilot says, whether it will be fair weather, or you should brace up for a bumpy ride. On this last trip to Asaba, it wasn’t very different, but it was the attendantwho had me cracking a rib.

From her appearance, she seems a full-blooded Nigerian woman, likely from the Southeast. As we neared landing, she unleashed a torrent of fake accents. She concluded by welcoming passengers to “Asaaabhaaa,” pronounced like a JJC would say Asaba, with enough drawl of the “Icheku” variety (the Nigerian TV drama series based on the foibles of the colonial courtroom) to spice the miserly inflight passengers’ lunchbox. Where did she acquire that accent from?

Oyinbo blues

I might be a latecomer to this flourishing business of phonemical jiggery pokery. Farooq Kperogi flagged it in an article two years ago, entitled “Fake Accents on Nigerian Airplanes and Airports,”in which he narrated how an Oyinbo man approached a passenger to interpret what the flight announcer said. It was his second article on the subject in seven years.

Although recent aviation concerns have focused more on air traffic control staffing shortages, technology and flight delays, it would be interesting to see statistics on how indecipherable announcements may have contributed to passenger misery, including perhaps, missed flights.

It wouldn’t be a big issue if the humour of Oyinbo wannabes were all there was to it. It would, in fact, be a good source of entertainment when flights are delayed, as they frequently are. But passengers who bank on in-flight announcerswho use them to practice phonology risk missing their flights.

Lessons from the motor park

In many parts of the world, airports are enhancing the quality of announcements. Tools like PAXGuide, for instance, can monitor every announcement, including who made it and when. Instead of terminal-wide announcements, announcements can be targeted and localised to specific gates, while automation through display boards and technological upgrades can also help to improve the passenger’s experience.

There’s also something that airports, with a bit of humility, can learn from the motor parks. I’m serious about this. The conductors in the motor parks hardly ever pretend to be someone they’re not or borrow a language they’re uncomfortable with. Apart from the points suggested, is it also possible for the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to authoriseusing pidgin English (perhaps the most widely spoken language across the country), as the second language for flight announcers at least for domestic routes?

It would take a truly wayward flight announcer to nasalise pidgin English and not sound ridiculous in his or her own ears.
