By Ayodele Oni

In a bid to boost the war against insurgency, Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has approved the release of 35 patrol vehicles and motorcycles to enhance the operational capabilities of the military and youth volunteers in Izge town, just as he announced resettlement plans for displaced communities.

The patrol vehicles and motorcycles aim to improve mobility for local security volunteers, enabling them to respond swiftly to threats and support military operations in their community.

Zulum who gave the approval on Friday during an assessment visit to Gwoza,  commended the Nigerian military and the local community for their gallantry in repelling recent insurgent attacks.

“I am here to examine the situation on ground and find out from you what your real problems are so we can address them.”

“We are optimistic that insha Allah we shall never lose again, I want to commend the military notwithstanding some of the comments made by some people including myself.

“When we said we have started witnessing a resurgence of Boko Haram, that doesn’t mean we are belittling the Nigerian military, we are just stating the reality so that we can come together to address the looming crisis, so that we shouldn’t lose ground.

“We shall do everything possible insha Allah to ensure Izge is not displaced. I want to commend the people of Izge; they are gallant and resilient. We will do whatever it takes to maintain law and order in Izge. Tell us what is supposed to be done, and we shall do it.”

According to the Governor, the facilities include 5 Toyota Hilux and 30 motorcycles, among other operational logistics.

Zulum also disclosed plans for gradually resettling displaced communities, assuring residents of continued government support to restore peace and stability.

The Governor noted that several communities, including Ashigasha, Warabe, Guduf, Wala, and many other smaller villages, will be resettled.

Zulum was accompanied on the visit by the member representing Gwoza at the state House of Assembly, Abdullahi Buba Abatcha, Head of Service, Dr Muhammad Ghuluze, Commissioner for Local Government and Emirates Affairs, Sugun Mai Mele, Permanent Secretary, Government House, Mustapha Ali Busuguma, Chief Adviser to the Governor, Dr Mairo Mandara, among other officials.

Senator Aliero, Former Kebbi Governor, Dumps PDP Alongside Two Others

Senator Adamu Aliero

The rank of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP, on Friday, May 9, 2025, continued to deplete.

The Party has lost another big fish in a former Governor of Kebbi State, now a Senator, Adamu Aliero.

Aliero, alongside two other Senators, Yahaya Abubakar Abdullahi and Garba Maidoki, representing Kebbi Central, Kebbi North and Kebbi South respectively ,all signed off ,from the PDP, after a meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa.

They were led into the meeting with the President ,by the National Chairman of the APC, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

Before now, there had been  a semblance of  balance of power in the State between the two major political platforms, with the APC producing the Governor ,while PDP maintained a significant presence both at the State and National Assembly levels.

However, the defection of the three Senators is expected to alter considerably ,the  influence of the PDP in the State.

More so, speculations are rife that other top PDP political office holders and chieftains are set to follow the footsteps of the defected Senators in the days ahead.

Other people  present during the parley with the President were the Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, his Sokoto State counterpart Ahmed Aliyu, as well as the Minister for Budget and Economic Planning Atiku Bagudu who is also from Kebbi State.

Instructively, the defection of the three PDP Senators will appear to be an anti-climax to several weeks of speculated resignation of the Kebbi state Governor from the APC.

Although details of the meeting with the President leading up to the defection were not made public, this Magazine gathered that the defecting Senators have been guaranteed automatic return tickets ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Don Charges Media To Lead Awareness Campaign On Consequences Of Corruption

Professor Tokunbo Adaja

A Professor of Journalism and Mass Communication, Tokunbo Adaja, has challenged the Nigerian press to engage in intensive political mobilisation, education and sensitization to boost citizen participation in the democratic process.

The don also charged Journalists and media organisations to sharpen their investigative capacities to expose corruption and promote good governance in the country.

Adaja, made the recommendation while delivering the 11th Inaugural Lecture of Joseph Ayo Babalola University, (JABU), Ikeji-Arakeji, Osun State, on Thursday at the Oba Oladele Olashore Auditorium of the institution.

According to him, such efforts would keep government and its officials on their toes and make them accountable.

In his lecture titled, “Power of Press and Press of Power: Bridging the Lacuna in the Quest for Good Governance in Nigeria”, Adaja argued that the press possesses immense power which, if not utilised to drive meaningful change, will remain a mere ‘theoretical formulations.”

The Don described the press as a vital agent of change entrusted with the responsibility of ensuring accountability, probity and transparency. He said these expectations compel on journalists to cultivate and institutionalize a culture of reporting and monitoring government activities, including awarded contracts, to ensure compliance to specifications.

He noted that people’s involvement in political activities, in Nigeria remains abysmally low stressing that a sustainable democracy requires the active participation of “an informed, rational and active citizenry.”

The scholar tasked the press to lead the quest for good governance by ensuring that “all social, economic and political misadventures of governments, government agencies and government functionaries must be published, as well as encourage state agencies that have prosecutorial powers to step in and do the needful”.

He decried the socio-political and economic imbalance caused by corruption, which, he said, undermined the legitimate activities and diminished the capacity of individuals to achieve their potentials.

X-raying the media and anti-graft efforts, Adaja acknowledged that while corruption is a global challenge, its manifestations in Nigeria are highly dependent on power distribution, legal and moral norm operation.

Taking a swipe on successive governments’ anticorruption crusade, the don faulted the method adopted to tackle the menance and argued that results of various anti-corruption initiatives from government, NGOs and international bodies have been largely disappointing.

Prof. Adaja who declared that Nigerians are not corrupt but the system corrupted the citizens, contended that no anti-corruption campaign can succeed without meaningful citizen involvement.

He, therefore, called on the media to lead this effort by raising awareness and educating the public on the consequences of corruption. Such awareness, according to him, would shape public perception and attitudes toward corrupt practices.

While urging leaders at all levels to lead by example if the country must win the war against corruption, Adaja wants journalists to profile those seeking political offices and reveal their records to help the electorate make informed choices during elections.

Adaja, who described the press as an ideological apparatus with a responsibility to engineer cultural rebirth, also stressed the need for the media to revisit Nigeria’s “lost cultural heritage, exhume and refine the key contents of our culture as well as reset the mindset of the citizenry to key into it”.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof Olasebikan Fakolujo, described the inaugural lecturer as a distinguished scholar with over 50 publications in reputable local and international journals.

Nigerian-British art dealer, Oghenochuko Ojiri, 53, has pleaded guilty to eight counts under the United Kingdom, UK, Terrorism Act 2000 of failing to disclose his business dealing with a known terrorist supporter, Nazem Ahmad.

Following his guilty plea, the court is not set to sentence him on June6, 2025 according to checks made by the magazine.

The court heard on Friday that Ojiri sold artwork worth £140,000 to Ahmad, who is accused of supporting the Lebanon-based group , Hezbollah and was sanctioned by the united states, US in 2019.

Lyndon Harris, prosecuting, said Ojiri had read news reports showing Ahmad had been sanctioned and discussed this with other people.

The offences took place between October 2020 and December 2021.

Ojiri founded Ramp Gallery, now known as the Ojiri Gallery, based in east London.

Mr Harris said: “There is one discussion where Ojiri is party to a conversation where it is apparent a lot of people have known for years about [Ahmad’s] terrorism links.”

He added that “Ramp Gallery engaged a third party to advise on compliance matters” but that the advice given was “not properly acted on”.

Westminster Magistrates’ Court heard that Ojiri “dealt with Mr Ahmad directly, negotiated the sales of artwork and congratulated him on purchases”.

Ahmad was also sanctioned by the UK government in 2023, which froze his assets and banned UK nationals from doing business with him or his companies. That restriction was imposed after the offences involving Ojiri.

At the time, the UK government said Ahmad had “an extensive art collection in the UK” and conducted business “with multiple UK-based artists, art galleries and auction houses”.

Hezbollah is a Shia Muslim political and military group in Lebanon and is backed by Iran. It is proscribed as a terrorist organisation by countries including the UK and the US.

Ojiri, also known as Ochuko Ojiri, was charged following an investigation by the Metropolitan Police’s specialist arts and antiques unit, alongside the Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation (OFSI) and HMRC.

Under the legislation, it is an offence if people do not notify police if they know or suspect a business associate to have been involved in financing a proscribed group.

Ojiri is listed on Bargain Hunt’s website as one of the show’s experts.

He is not a member of BBC staff, works as a freelance presenter and has also appeared on Antiques Road Trip and Channel 5’s Storage: Flog the Lot! He has not worked on BBC programmes since 2023.

A BBC spokesperson said: “It would not be appropriate to comment on ongoing legal proceedings.”

District Judge Briony Clarke granted Ojiri bail but ordered him to surrender his passport. Gavin Irwin, mitigating, told the court Ojiri was not a flight risk.

Africa’s Richest Man and President of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote has assured the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL is not a competitor but a partner in the oild and gas business.

Dangote, the owner of the $20 billion Dangote Refinery said he seeks more cooperation with the government -owned company in the future.

He spoke when he paid a visit to the NNPCL New Group Managing Director, GMD, Bayo Ojulari, according to statement released by the Group’s spokesperson, Olufemi Soneye on Friday.

The magazine reported that a frosty relation exist between the NNPCL and Dangote, who once alleged that the state-owned oil corporation was trying to destroy his multi-billion dollar Refinery.

President Tinubu had recently appointed Ojulari as the GMD after sacking the frmer GMD, Mele Kyari as the Chief executive of the NNPCL.

Dangote said he’s looking forward to a strong partnership with the new NNPCL management, saying the two companies have something to mutually benefit through cooperation, saying NNPCL and Dangote Refinery are business partners.

He said, “There is no competition between us; we are not here to compete with NNPC Ltd. NNPC is part and parcel of our business, and we are also part of NNPC. This is an era of cooperation between the two organisations.”

The business mogul had earlier in the week pointed out that some oil marketers rather than NNPCL were trying to frustrate his business, saying he has confidence in the NNPCL new management to do the right thing, adding that some steps taken so far by the Ojulari team indicate that they are professionals who are prepared to do the best for the nation’s oil and gas sector.

“The calibre of individuals at the helm, and their deliberate, reform-driven agenda, demonstrate a commitment to fostering a culture of performance and professionalism,” Dangote said.
