Following public complaints against the conduct and outcome of this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations, (UTME), the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has assured that identified technical issue will be addressed.

Fabian Benjamin, Public Communication Advisor of JAMB in a statement on Monday, explained that the Board will carry out comprehensive post-mortem of the examination process.

“JAMB acknowledges the significant volume of unusual complaints following the release of the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) results, which were officially published last Friday.

“In response, the Board is fast forwarding its annual system review—a comprehensive post-mortem of the examination process that is conducted each year months  after the exercise.

“The Board’s annual review encompasses three key stages: registration, examination, and result release. During the examination phase, JAMB ensures that every candidate is afforded the opportunity to sit for the test.

“Should any technical issues arise, the Board reschedules the examination for affected candidates without hesitation.

“We are particularly concerned about the unusual complaints originating from a few states within the Federation. We are currently scrutinising these complaints in detail to identify and rectify any potential technical issues.

“To assist in this process, we have engaged a number of experts, including members from the Computer Professionals Association of Nigeria, Chief External Examiners, who are heads of tertiary institutions, the Educational Association and Research Network in Africa, measurement experts, and Vice Chancellors from various institutions.

“If it is determined that there were indeed glitches, we will implement appropriate remedial measures promptly, as we do in the case of the examinations themselves.”

By Akinwale Kasali

The Anambra State Governor has disclosed that it has taken disciplinary actions and launched a formal investigation into the controversial incident involving the sale of Head Prefect Nomination Forms for N5,000 to Pupils in a Private Primary School in the State.

The outrageous action, taken by the school, Blossom Fount School, located in Awka, Anambra State, has triggered public outcry and condemnation.

Pupils aspiring to be Prefects School were asked to purchase a nomination form at the cost of N5,000.

Condemning the action, the Anambra State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh,  disclosed that the Government has swiftly intervened and taken initial steps to address the situation.

According to the Commissioner, the teacher, directly linked to the allegation, has been placed on a one-month suspension, while a Special Committee has been set up by the Ministry to thoroughly investigate the incident.

Prof. Chuma-Udeh explained that the school, during preliminary engagement with the Ministry claimed that the idea of selling the Nomination Form was only mentioned during a Parents Teachers Association, PTA, meeting and was thereafter dropped following widespread opposition from Parents.

The Commissioner, however, noted that the school claimed it remained unclear how the said form still found its way into circulation, which was attributed to the actions of the now-suspended teacher, whose identity is yet to be revealed.

She further described the alleged act as reprehensible.

The Commissioner said it amounted to planting seeds of corruption in the minds of innocent Children and turning leadership into a transaction rather than a merit-based responsibility; even as she warned sternly that such practices have no place in the educational system of Anambra State under Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration.

According to her, such act is a deeply troubling attempt to commercialize student leadership and exploit children’s ambitions for financial gain, and is absolutely unacceptable.

“We must protect the dignity and rights of children in our schools,” she stated, further reiterating the commitment of the Soludo-led government to upholding ethical standards and fairness within the school system, and warning that any form of exploitation or extortion, whether in private or public schools, would be met with stiff sanctions.

She also revealed that the Ministry will again engage with the school authority this week and possibly with some Parents and some of the Pupils anytime soon in the course of the investigation.

She emphasized that further details would be withheld pending the conclusion and the outcome of the Committee’s investigation.

Catholic Bishop Enjoins Govt Appointees To Be  Selfless, As Uzodimma Cautions Against Abuse Of Office

Senator Hope Uzodimma and Dr Solomon Amatu

The Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma, Sunday, admonished appointees of government and other elected office holders to refrain from greed and abuse of their offices in their dealings, especially with government property.

Senator Uzodimma spoke on a day the Catholic Bishop of Okigwe Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Solomon Amatu urged Christian faithful, and particularly government appointees, to be good Shepherds and selfless servants to the flock in the society.

Bishop Amatu had delivered a Homily during the Service at the Government House Chapel which thrust was on Jesus Christ as the Good Shepherd and his flock/sheep.

Governor Uzodimma who thanked the Bishop for finding time to worship at the Government House Chapel described his Homily as apt, with too many take aways by those in attendance.

However, the Governor regretted that unscrupulous government appointees and  officials, who are expected to be good shepherds or “even flocks” have been discovered to be at the forefront of grabbing lands belonging to government out of greed and building on them.

He vowed that all unauthorised buildings on such lands will be demolished.

The Governor used the opportunity to announce the commission of the Implementation Committee on recovery of government lands which he said the members are to commence work immediately.

He however noted that while the leaders as shepherds are expected to be selfless, the “flock” are equally expected to make sacrifices in the interest of the society.

Amatu said that there are different categories of shepherds –  big and small, rich and poor, presidents and their ministers, governors and their appointees, parents to their children, teachers to their students, among others.

He insisted that the relationship between the shepherds and their flocks should be such that they must “know themselves,”  “hear themselves,” and “trust themselves,” the way Jesus Christ as a Shepherd knew His flocks/ sheep and also heard from them.

He advised government appointees to be a reflection of good shepherds who know and hear from their flocks/sheep at all times, and to make all the necessary sacrifices required of them as worthy leaders of their flocks/ sheep.

Some of those present during the Church Service include; the Deputy Governor, Lady Chinyere Ekomaru and her husband, Chief Chukwuma, the former Governor of the State, Chief Ikedi Ohakim, Legislators of the House of Representatives and State House of Assembly, Secretary to the State Government, Chief Cosmas Iwu, the Chief of Staff, Barr. Nnamdi Anyaehie,  Executive Council members, Traditional Rulers, the Clergy and many other dignitaries.

“All transportation by road, air, and sea is prohibited from 6.00am to 6.00 pm on May,30, 2025,which includes no human movement within our territory.

“There will be no school, no community meetings, no religious services, no opening of markets ,and stores, and no public assemblies of any kind

“Simply stay inside and enjoy television, and videos with your family while contemplating the memories, and genocide inflicted upon Biafrans from 1967 to the present day. It is a day for families to recount their experiences of the genocide.”

With the above words, the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, declared May 30, 2025, a sit-at-home day for all residents of the south-east region.

This is just as the West African Examination Council WAEC, as usual, will be conducting examinations on some subjects, same day with several thousands of candidates set to miss their papers.

In a statement on Monday, May 12, 2025, IPOB’s spokesperson Emma Powerful, informed that May 30, henceforth, has been designated a public holiday and a period of lockdown across Igbo Land to commemorate Biafran Day in honour of fallen heroes and heroines of Igbo during the Nigerian Civil war.

“Anticipation has begun as of May 1, 2025 ,with broadcasts from Radio Biafra ,and media awareness efforts by the IPOB media team.

“This month, IPOP will involve our audience in memorial lectures, honouring Biafran heroes both at home and abroad, just like in earlier years.

“The peak of the yearly memorial and remembrance event will occur on May 30, 2025, known as the Biafra Heroes Memorial Day.

“It is a day designated by IPOB for Biafrans to commemorate and pay tribute to our heroes, heroines ,and those who sacrificed their lives in the struggle for Biafra’s liberation and independence.

“The IPOB leadership has announced that May 30, 2025 will be free day ,marking a total lockdown for Biafrans residing in Biafra Land”, the statement reads in part .

The IPOB spokesperson urged the people to observe the lockdown as a mark of respect and honour to all those who made various sacrifices for the cause of Biafra, especially during the genocidal war of between 1967 and 1970.

“We need to commemorate them by spending one day indoors. We urge all Biafrans and every advocate of freedom in Biafra Land to comply with this one-day lockdown directive on May 30, 2025.

“All IPOB family members in their various countries must organize ,and obtain permits to demonstrate against the unlawful imprisonment of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu ,and the illegal detention of Nnamdi Kanu in Nigeria.

“No protest will take place in Biafra, or anywhere in Nigeria to prevent being harmed by the lethal Nigerian Security Forces.

“Biafrans abroad will gather in the streets of their host countries or organize town hall meetings to express their support in honouring our fallen heroes ,and advocating for the restoration of Biafra.

“IPOB and Ndigbo across the globe will pay tribute to all our fallen heroes and heroines ,including our everlasting Leaders, the late Odumegwu Ojukwu ,General Philip Effiong , Chief Dr Frank Opigo ,Commander Ikonso ,and numerous others who significantly contributed and fought to avert the genocide and destruction of Biafrans by the Nigerian and British Governments along with their allied forces.

“Every year on May 30 ,it is a significant day for all Biafrans .It is a public holiday for every citizen ,and non-citizens of Biafra living in living in Biafra territory”, Powerful added.

According to the IPOB spokesman, those rendering essential services ,such as security personnel, nurses, doctors, other healthcare delivery officials firefighters, journalists ,NUPENG,

are, however, exempted from  the lockdown directive.

He informed that relevant IPOB organs have contacted WAEC on the need to modify its examination time table to accommodate the lockdown.

Similarly, he stated that notices have been dispatched to Governors of the South-east region, informing them of the intention of the group May 30 to honour its heroes and heroines.

According to Powerful, “the group opted for a sit-at-home option in the face of the brutal disposition of Nigerian authorities towards IPOB”.

The Source reports that during same period last year, about five military personnel were unfortunately gunned  down at Obikabia Junction, in the Aba North local council of Abia state.

They were ambushed and gruesomely killed by some suspected enforcers of the Biafran Day.

The incident was to cause a big strain in the relationship between the Abia State Government and the Military hierarchy.

The incident had occurred less than a few hours after the Abia State authorities issued a statement lending tacit support to the sit-at-home directive .

However, it is not yet clear how the State Government ,and those of the other States in the South East intend to treat the latest IPOB’s notice of observing the day as a public holiday.

EFCC Goes After Tompolo For Allegedly Abusing The Naira

EFCC arrest Tompolo

By Akinwale Kasali

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has disclosed plans by the Commission to investigate the founder of Tantita Security Services, Government Ekpemupolo, popularly called Tompolo, for allegedly abusing the Naira at a national occasion.

The agency said that the former Niger Delta militant leader will be prosecuted for engaging in actions that were against the country’s law, saying no one is above the law.

The agency stated this on Monday hours after Tompolo was spotted in a viral video, reportedly during his 54th birthday celebration in April, dancing as a man sprayed ₦1,000 notes before him.

Tompolo’s action in the video that had gone viral prompted calls from Nigerians that the EFCC must investigate the matter to serve as a deterrent to other wealthy citizens still engaging in the act that has been outlawed in the country.

Following the call- out, the anti-graft agency said the Niger Delta chieftain will have questions to answer over the viral video.

According to the agency: “Nobody is above the law. Tompolo will have questions to answer!”

Before him, the agency had dragged a few Nigerians before the court for abusing the Naira during ceremonies held across the country.

“Fubara Can’t Just Discard People’s Mandate”, Says HURIWA

Siminalayi Fubara
Governor Siminalayi Fubara

By Ayodele Oni

“Fubara’s nonchalant attitude gives room for concern and is disappointing”

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has reminded suspended Rivers state Governor, Siminalayi Fubara that the mandate he is holding belongs to the people.

Reacting  to the recent remarks by Governor Fubara, suggesting his lack of interest in returning to office,  the association warned that such developments—regardless of the governor’s personal disposition—should not be normalized in a constitutional democracy.

In a statement issued, on Monday in Abuja, and signed by Emmanuel Onwubiko, National Coordinator, HURIWA stressed that Nigeria’s democracy is anchored on the rule of law, the supremacy of the constitution, and the sanctity of electoral mandates.

The Association expressed deep concern that Governor Fubara’s nonchalance, reflected in his public remarks at the service of songs held for the late elder statesman, Chief Edwin Clark, could be misinterpreted as acceptance of an illegality and further embolden anti-democratic forces.

At the Port Harcourt event on Sunday, Fubara was quoted as saying, “Can’t you see how better I look? Do you think I am interested in it? Do you even know if I want to go back there? My spirit had already left that place long ago.”

HURIWA said while the comments may reflect his personal frustrations, they do not erase the fact that a sitting President has no constitutional powers to suspend a duly elected governor and impose a sole administrator over a federating unit.

“We are not responding to the person of Governor Fubara, but to the dangerous implications of what has happened in Rivers State.

“The President of Nigeria, as powerful as his office may be, has no constitutional right to suspend a governor or appoint a military administrator over any state. What has taken place in Rivers State is a coup against the Nigerian Constitution.”

Nowhere in the Constitution, HURIWA said, is a President empowered to arbitrarily suspend a state governor or hand over governance to an unelected appointee.

“Again, the Association emphasized that Section 11(4) of the Constitution only allows the National Assembly to intervene in the affairs of a state in a time of breakdown of law and order—but even that does not empower the President to suspend governors or impose unelected administrators.

“The section provides that the National Assembly may make laws for peace and order, not remove or suspend a governor from office.

“It is a mockery of our constitutional democracy for the federal government to take over a state without a formal declaration of a state of emergency by the National Assembly as required under Section 305.

“Even if there is a state of emergency, the law does not give the President the powers to impose a sole administrator. The office of the governor is a constitutional creation—not a presidential appointee.

“Even if Governor Fubara says he is tired or uninterested, it is not his mandate to discard. That mandate belongs to the people of Rivers State who elected him.

“No governor can be suspended by executive fiat. What we are witnessing is an unconstitutional power grab that must be resisted by all democratic forces.”

Wike Confirms Fubara Visited Him With Two APC Governors For Peace

Nyesom Wike and Simi Fubara

By Ayodele Oni

As part of the ongoing peace initiatives to end the political crisis in Rivers State, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has confirmed that Governor Siminalayi Fubara, recently visited him with two All Progressives Congress (APC) Governors to seek peace.

Wike’s confirmation came on Monday while speaking to journalists.

The revelation came on the heels of Fubara’s declaration that he was not desperate to return to office, nearly two months after President Bola Tinubu declared emergency rule in the state.

Fubara spoke on Sunday during a service of songs held in Port Harcourt, Rivers state capital, in honour of the late Edwin Clark, elder statesman and the leader of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF).

“Have you asked yourself, do you think I’m interested in going back there? I want to ask you—don’t you see how much better I’m doing?” Fubara asked the audience at the service of songs.

Fubara dissociated himself from the protests for his return and described them as personal views not aligned with his approach. He said such comments were unlikely to support peace in the State.

The Governor also expressed concerns that actions taken by some of his backers had, in fact, worsened the crisis.

He asked the audience to focus their reflections on Clark’s life and legacy, rather than turning the event into a political protest.

However, Wike revealed that “Fubara came to me with two Governors and one elder statesman. Just that they are both APC Governors. He said he wants peace.”

The meeting reportedly took place at Wike’s residence.

According to reports, Fubara was accompanied by Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru, and a former Ogun State Governor Olusegun Osoba.

Sources said Fubara “walked straight into Wike’s living room because that’s a familiar terrain” and appealed to the Minister to end the political tension between them.

Akpabio: Everyone Talks About Peter Obi, While Obi Only Talks About Nigeria’s Condition —  Dr Sam Amadi

0
Sam Amadi and Godswill Akpabio

In a pointed commentary shared on his official X account, Dr. Sam Amadi, Director of the Abuja School of Social and Political Thoughts, decried what he termed the growing pattern of unwarranted attacks on Peter Obi by senior government officials. According to Amadi, it has become a troubling trend for members of the current administration to frequently target Obi, despite his consistent focus on Nigeria’s dire socio-economic realities rather than on personalities.

He cited recent criticisms from the Presidency, the Governor of Lagos State, and Senate President Godswill Akpabio as examples of this misplaced focus. Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, had recently remarked that the “labour of our heroes past has gone in vain”—a sobering reflection on the country’s current state of affairs. This observation was met with sharp rebuke from Senator Akpabio, who accused Obi of being disrespectful and of dishonouring the legacy of Nigeria’s founding fathers.

Before this, the Governor of Lagos State had also lashed out at Obi, reacting to comments he made during a recent foreign engagement, where he critiqued the country’s economic trajectory. The Presidency, too, had earlier dismissed Obi’s ideas and proposals on governance and economic reform.

Amadi, however, offered a counter-narrative. He argued that while the political elite expend significant energy attacking Obi, the man himself remains resolutely focused on Nigeria’s structural challenges and the urgent need for reform. “If elections were a purely rational exercise,” Amadi noted, “Peter Obi is so far the only candidate who ought to be elected.”

He lamented what he called the disproportionate attention paid to Obi by high-ranking government figures, asserting that Obi has steered clear of personal attacks and has instead consistently advanced a vision for national renewal rooted in prudence, accountability, and economic revitalisation.

Amadi’s intervention has sparked wide engagement online, with many Nigerians echoing his sentiments and urging government officials to redirect their attention to the pressing issues confronting the country, rather than vilifying opposition voices. His remarks underscore a growing perception that constructive critique and nation-centred discourse are increasingly being met with defensiveness, rather than dialogue.

Soludo’s Misleading Claim: Setting the Record Straight

0
Val Obienyem abd Charles Soludo

By Val Obienyem

Yesterday, Governor Charles Soludo once again revealed his persistent fixation on Mr Peter Obi, seizing the occasion of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s visit to Anambra State as a platform to continue his hatred. Cloaked in subtlety but unmistakable in intent, his remarks amounted to veiled and unwarranted attacks against Obi – an unfortunate misuse of a presidential visit for personal vendetta.

During the visit, Governor Soludo claimed in his speech that the last visit by a sitting President to the state was merely to commission a brewery. This assertion is both misleading and historically inaccurate.

Contrary to Governor Soludo’s claim, former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan paid five visits to Anambra State during his tenure – each marked by impactful public and private sector engagements that significantly advanced the state’s socio-economic development.

On October 15, 2010, President Jonathan paid his first official working visit to Anambra. During the visit, he commissioned several key projects, including the Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing plant in Nnewi; the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu Teaching Hospital, built from the ground by Mr Obi; the Kenneth Dike Central Library; the twin-building State Secretariat (the first in the state’s history); and the Emergency Management Complex. He also launched the Parenteral Drug Factory of Juhel Pharmaceuticals and commissioned a number of state roads, including the dualised Zik’s Avenue, Odor Bridge, the eight-lane Head Bridge–Upper Iweka Road, among others.

Chief Innocent Chukwuma, the CEO of Innoson, has said countless times that if not for Mr Peter Obi, his company would not have survived. It is among the top ten employers of labour in Anambra State and in tax payment.

On August 30, 2012, President Jonathan returned to Anambra to inaugurate Orient Petroleum’s oil drilling facilities in Aguleri-Otu—made possible by massive state investment under Mr Peter Obi.  It was in that visit that Anambra was pronounced the 10th Oil producing state in Nigeria. He also inaugurated the Onitsha River Port Complex and commissioned various private-sector-led investments inspired by Mr Obi’s administration. Over 15 roads within the Onitsha Harbour Industrial Estate were completed and commissioned during the visit. Key facilities commissioned  within the estate included Orange Drugs Company, Krisoral Company, and Brollo Steel Company, among others.

He also facilitated the establishment of International Breweries (Intafact), which today stands as the foremost employer of labour in Anambra State and its highest taxpayer. Near the end of Mr Peter Obi’s administration, the company sought to expand operations, having already secured land along the banks of the Omambala River. Regrettably, due to the current administration’s perceived indifference to investment-driven initiatives, that expansion was redirected to Shagamu — a decision for which the Ogun State Governor remains openly grateful. Notably, three of the brewery’s largest distributors hail from Anambra, each providing employment to over 100 workers, further underscoring the state’s latent economic potential. Meanwhile, in neighbouring Enugu, the people continue to celebrate the establishment of the brewery at Ama, yet curiously, some choose to deride Anambra’s own achievements. In contrast, South Africa, with over 200 breweries, has turned its beverage industry into a powerful economic engine, exporting various brands across the continent — including to Nigeria, which hosts barely 20 breweries.

His third and fourth visits were to sympathise with victims of the devastating floods in Anambra and to attend the funeral of Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, respectively. Both visits were facilitated by the then Gov. Obi.

His fifth and final visit occurred on 10 March 2014, when he officially flagged off the construction of the ₦117 billion Second Niger Bridge – an infrastructural milestone long yearned for by the people of the South-East. This historic event, which took place just days before Mr Peter Obi completed his tenure, was more than ceremonial. President Goodluck Jonathan, in his address, acknowledged Mr Obi’s persistence and instrumental role in ensuring the project moved from promise to execution. He stated that he felt a moral obligation to personally inaugurate the bridge in honour of Obi’s tireless advocacy. Notably, it was at Mr Obi’s insistence that the contract was re-awarded to Julius Berger, a globally reputable construction firm, to guarantee structural integrity and timely delivery.

Throughout all these presidential visits, not once did Mr Peter Obi use the platform to denigrate his predecessors. He approached each occasion not as an opportunity for self-aggrandisement, but as a moment to elevate Anambra State—celebrated as the ‘Light of the Nation’—to unify its diverse people and attract meaningful investment. For him, governance was a call to service, not a stage for settling personal scores. This is the true spirit of a state visit: dignified, visionary, and people-focused. It should never be reduced to a theatre of the absurd, where individuals entrusted with leadership exhibit nothing but poor upbringing and petty spite under the spotlight of national attention.

It is important to underscore that Mr Peter Obi deliberately encouraged the commissioning of private investments during presidential visits. His rationale was clear: while public infrastructure is expected from government, real economic growth requires private sector participation, which in turn benefits from federal attention and encouragement. This strategy attracted some of the most consequential investments in Anambra’s history—many of which remain top employers and major taxpayers today.

It should also be noted that the amusement park commissioned during President Tinubu’s visit was, until Mr Obi’s intervention, a flooded wasteland. It was Obi who reopened the closed water channel, constructed a massive culvert, and made the area accessible for future development.

Regarding Soludo’s reference to the South-East’s endorsement of President Jonathan in 2011, it is worth pointing out that this was a collective decision by the South East’s leadership. They chose not to field a candidate for the presidency or vice presidency, opting instead to support Jonathan with the hope of reciprocal support in the future. It is therefore curious that Soludo failed to mention the  type of adoption he meant which actually was the adoption of President Mohammad Buhari in 2015 and 2019.

Regrettably, Governor Soludo’s recent remarks continue a pattern of publicly undermining Mr Peter Obi—a trend that has persisted since the 2023 presidential campaign. Even more perplexing is that, rather than using President Tinubu’s visit to market Anambra and attract investment, Soludo chose to peddle a distorted version of history that downplays the state’s developmental strides.

It is essential that public officials speak truthfully, especially in the presence of national figures. Rewriting history for political gain not only disrespects past administrations but also insults the intelligence of Ndi Anambra.

Facts remain sacred. No amount of distortion can erase the visible legacy of impactful governance delivered during the Jonathan–Obi era.
