Endorsement Of Gov Otti: You Are On Your Own, APC Warns Orji Kalu

0
Orji Uzor Kalu and Alex Otti

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The All Progressive Congress, APC, has vehemently rejected the  endorsement handed down to the Abia state Governor, Dr Alex Otti, by a chieftain of the party and Senator representing Abia North Senatorial district ,Orji Uzor Kalu.

The Source reports that Senator Kalu ,a former Governor of the State ,in company with a one time Senator that represented Abia Central, Chris Adighijie had on Sunday, June 8, 2025 during a visit to the  Labour Party’s Governor Otti, patted him on the back for work well done so far in the governance of Abia State.

Kalu, thereafter, proceeded to endorse Otti’s second term bid ,even when the Governor is still waiting on God to decide  his 2027 political foray.

Instructively, Governor Otti, while appreciating the visit of his predecessor in  office, and the concomitant accolades, flayed all discussions about 2027 as amounting to playing God.

While, also, conceding to have borrowed hugely from the infrastructural development blueprint of Kalu during his time as the State Governor, Otti, pointedly disassociated himself from all such distractive permutations on the 2027 polls.

Two years, he  insisted, are too far for political actors to engage in calculations for another election .

The Abia APC in a strongly-worded  statement issued  on Tuesday, June 10, by its spokesperson, Sterling Uruakpa scolded Senator Kalu for indulging in an unsolicited political  handshake with a Governor of a rival party.

The APC , while completely distancing itself from all remarks  credited to Kalu during the said visit, also, stated that the Abia State former Governor is on his own.

The party similarly described Senator Kalu’s visit to Governor Otti as purely a personal affair which does not enjoy the approval and or support of APC.

“Senator Orji Uzor Kalu’s visit to Governor Alex Otti was a personal engagement. It does not reflect the position or endorsement of  Abia state APC.

The Party remains firm in its position that the Labour Party Government in Abia is fraught with unresolved conflicts of interest, a troubling lack of transparency, and the concealment of project costs, and contracts details” the party stated.

The APC reaffirmed its position on the alleged opaqueness of the LP administration, as earlier  captured by its Chairman, Dr Kingsley Ononogbu.

The Chairman had at the  occasion of the launch of Renewed Hope Partners in Bende Local Council of the State on May 28, 2025, berated the Otti administration for reveling in unbridled financial secrecy as well as conducting the affairs of Abia State from his private residence in his Isiala Ngwa South Local Government.

The APC in the statement warned against any further act of party indiscipline, sabotage, as well as what it described as  “political fraternization on the part of members.

According to the APC, no party member should hide under the guise of seeking support for the ambition of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to undermine its fortune.

“We will not tolerate a repeat of the 2023 betrayal where party discipline was sacrificed for personal gain”, the APC warned.

Instructively too, at an interactive session with the media after the now controversial visit, Senator Kalu had stated that his overall interest, was to foster a political understanding between President Tinubu and Governor Otti.

While rejecting any plans for a coalition against the President ahead of the 2027 polls, Kalu noted that he is working to ensure that both Governor Otti and the President assist each other during the election.

“I am not into coalition talks. My interest is for Tinubu and Otti to support each other.

“Governor Otti doesn’t have a problem with me. I don’t want to talk about a coalition. I want to talk about Otti supporting Tinubu and Tinubu supporting Otti. That is my interest”, Kalu submitted.

However, not a few people, including a sizable number of his APC members, perceive Senator Kalu’s posture as being in tandem with his well known survival antics.

However, the APC in its statement expressed its unflinching readiness and commitment towards wresting power from the LP in the state.

” Let it be known that no amount of political posturing, or unmerited praise for the Labour Party Government will distract us.

“We are focused on delivering victory in 2027, and aligning Abia state with the APC-led Federal Government”, Uruakpa asserted.

There is mass exodus of members of opposition Party, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Lagos State. This is just as the Party’s spokesman, Hakeem Amode, who just dumped the party for the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC has declared it dead.

Amode left the Party alongside other PDP Chieftains in the State. They announced their defection at a Press Conference in Ikeja, Lagos.

Amode disclosed that he and other defectors were motivated and inspired by the visionary leadership of the 2023 PDP Governorship candidate, Abdul-Azeez Adediran, who had earlier moved to the APC.

The former PDP Spokesperson said: “It is with great honour and a profound sense of responsibility that we stand before you today to announce a pivotal decision; one that marks a significant turning point not just for us as individuals, but for many committed political stakeholders who have journeyed with us over the years.

“Today, we have decided to collapse the entire PDP structure in Lagos State, from Ward to the State level , to align with His Excellency, Jandor to decamp en masse to the APC.

“The PDP, both at the National and State levels, has lost its way.

“The party has deviated from the founding ideals that once made it the largest and most respected political platform in Africa.

“Today, its future is riddled with tension and uncertainty.

“The PDP is in a coma and may not survive unless urgent measures are taken,” Amode said.

He further stated that the tenure of the defectors within the PDP had been lengthy and eventful, characterised by both achievements and setbacks.

He said that majority of the defectors had the privilege of serving the PDP in various capacities, worked for change and did their best for their former party

He said, “However, after thorough introspection and extensive consultation, we believe it is time to chart a new course.

“This decision has not been made lightly.

“It reflects our commitment to taking control of our political destinies in order to better serve our people and the loyal supporters who continue to stand by us.”

Amode stated that the PDP in Lagos, under the leadership of Philip Aivoji, had been fractured and disunited.

He added that Poor leadership and lack of cohesion have cost the PDP dearly, with Aivodji playing dumb to the Cries of the Party members.

“Today, we, alongside several former PDP candidates at various levels, national, local government executives, ward leaders, and key stakeholders across Lagos, formally resign from the PDP and align ourselves with the APC.

“We have submitted our letters of resignation to our respective ward chairmen, local government chairmen, and the state leadership of the PDP,” he said.

He however noted that the decision to leave the PDP was not driven by personal ambition, clarified that defecting to the APC was to serve the society better.

“We are determined to work with our new partners in the APC to deliver the true dividends of democracy to every corner of our great state.

Safurat Abdulkareem, a two-time State PDP Deputy Governorship candidate, said that the defectors were determined to follow the progressives to make the state better.

In the same vein, Ola Apena, a former state PDP Deputy Chairman in the State said the PDP had no relevance in the state anymore.

“The PDP is dead. There is no more PDP.

“The party is in complete limbo and we don’t know whether it will be up,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of 2023 PDP State House of Assembly Candidates, Ibrahim Balogun, who flew the party’s flag in Kosofe, said he wasted time by staying in the PDP for 18 years.

“We will work for Tinubu in 2027. We are going en masse into the APC.

“Jandor is a visionary leader to follow because he is a man of the people,” Balogun said.

Other PDP leaders, who dumped the party for the APC included Prince Rufus Adeniyi, a former PDP Assistant State Organising Secretary (Lagos West) and  Jerry Afemikhe (Olori Odo), a former PDP House of Representatives Candidate in Surulere Constituency I.

Some 2023 PDP Lagos State House of Assembly Candidates who dumped the Party includes; Keshinro Abiodun (Epe 1);Akeem Jinadu, (Eti-Osa 1); Ibrahim Balogun (Kosofe 2).

Taofeek Obanikoro (Lagos Island 1); Tunde Pratt (Lagos Mainland 2); Saheed Aregbesola (Oshodi-Isolo State 2), Sulaimon Thompson (Surulere 1)and Taofeek Kuye ( Ajeromi-Ifelodun State 1) also dumped PDP for APC.

Adeyemi Kazeem:former PDP Chairman, Ojo Local Government; Gbenga Ogunleye, Media aide to the 2023 Lagos PDP Governorship Candidate were also among those who defected to the ruling APC.

Jesutega Onokpasa is dead

By Akinwale Kasali

Prominent Political Commentator, Jesutega Onokpasa, is dead.

The Lawyer and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC,  passed on Monday.

His death was disclosed on his X account on Tuesday, by a pro-APC crusader, Okezie Atani, who revealed that the prominent political commentator is survived by his wife and children.

He wrote, “We lost Barr. Jesutega Onokpasa, may his soul rest in perfect peace.

A Facebook page named Renewed Hope United Kingdom also wrote a tribute entitled “A Farewell to a Passionate Advocate: Honouring Jesutega Onokpasa’s Legacy” to announce the late APC chieftain’s demise.

It wrote, “The passing of Barrister Jesutega Onokpasa is a profound loss to the Nigerian political and legal landscape. As a dedicated lawyer and political commentator, he was deeply engaged in shaping discourse and advocating for his beliefs.

“His contributions as a member of the APC Publicity Committee and the APC Presidential Campaign Council in 2023 reflected his commitment to his party and the nation. Onokpasa’s voice, whether in support or critique, was a vital part of Nigeria’s democratic conversation, and his absence will be deeply felt. May his family, friends, and colleagues find strength and solace in this difficult time.

“May His Soul Rest in Perfect Peace. Amen.”

It would be recalled that the Late Onokpasa was an APC’s Presidential Campaign Council member in 2023.

He also served on the APC’s Publicity Committee.

He gained national attention for his political commentary and staunch support for President Bola Tinubu, often appearing on TV to defend the administration.

He, however, became one of the President’s most bitter critics, beginning from the day Tinubu appointed Daniel Bwala a Presidential Adviser. Jesutega could not endure the appointment and noted that Bwala was one of those who stood against Tinubu during the Campaigns and called him unprintable names.

“The President Is Shielded, He Doesn’t Know What’s Going On” – Ndume

Senator Ali Ndume

By Gideon Njoku

The Senator representing Borno  South Senatorial District, has said  that President Bola Tinubu is  disconnected from the daily struggles of the masses. “The President doesn’t know what’s going on”, Ndume said.

Speaking in an interview with Channels Television, Ndume said that the President is so shielded by

Presidential Advisers that even when he is outside the Villa, he does not see the sufferings of the people. He is in a car which glass windows are tinted, Ndume said, so, he doesn’t see.

Ndume: “The people are not happy. Several people have said it, and the President also is not pretending. He acknowledged that there’s hardship; he’s acknowledged that things are very difficult, and even recently, he appealed that people should be patient with him.”

But  Ndume worries about how long the people’s patience will last.

His words: “The question is, how long will they be patient? And things are very difficult, and certainly, so many things have not been done the way the people are expecting. And to be honest with you, if you can go back to the electorate today, half of them are not happy. You can’t say they are; you can’t lie about that.”

The Senator disclosed that what angers him most are the deception and the lies they tell the President.

His words: “I see people lying, and I see people telling the President what he wants to hear, or maybe some of them even he doesn’t want to hear them.

“My position on the people around the President that are supposed to help him is that they are deceiving him and are doing more harm than good.

“Let me say that it is because the President cannot go out on the street like myself and know how the people feel. Even outside the Villa they will drive him in tinted glass, he doesn’t even see what’s going on.”

Gov Namadi Launches Biofortified Seed

By Ayodele Oni

In a significant step towards addressing malnutrition and climate change, not less than 30,000 farmers in Jigawa state are expected to benefit from biofortified seeds being distributed to small holder farmers in the state.

Already, Governor Umar Namadi has flagged off the distribution of the seeds to the beneficiaries.

A statement by the Senior Assistant Media Affairs to the governor,  Hajiya Zainab Rabo said “this initiative, supported by HarvestPlus Nigeria and other partners, aims to enhance food security and nutritional outcomes in the region.”

Zainab Rabo in the signed statement explained that “The biofortified seeds being distributed include Vitamin A fortified maize, iron and zinc fortified millet.

“These seeds are not only high-yielding and climate-smart but also packed with essential nutrients, making them a valuable resource for farmers and consumers alike.”

The Senior  Assistant Media Affairs quoted her Principal  to have said “this initiative is part of a broader strategy to improve the agricultural sector in Jigawa.

“The government has also recruited additional extension workers to provide support to farmers, offered input loans to rice and wheat farmers, and established farm mechanization service centers across the state.

“The distribution of biofortified seeds is expected to have a positive impact on the lives of thousands of farmers and their families. By providing access to nutrient-rich crops, the initiative aims to improve nutrition and health outcomes, particularly among vulnerable populations.

“The Jigawa state government’s commitment to improving the agricultural sector is evident in its comprehensive approach. By combining the distribution of biofortified seeds with other initiatives, such as farm mechanization and input loans, the government is working to create a more secure and sustainable food system.

“The farmers are expected to benefit greatly from this initiative, as the biofortified seeds will not only improve their yields but also provide them with a healthier and more nutritious crop to consume and sell.

“The government’s emphasis on the importance of farmers in the plan is a testament to its commitment to their well-being.

“As the distribution of biofortified seeds begins, farmers are expressing optimism about the potential benefits. With the support of the state government and its partners, the farmers are confident that this initiative will improve their livelihoods and contribute to a more food-secure future.

“The launch of this initiative marks an important milestone in Jigawa State’s efforts to address malnutrition and climate change.

“As the programme unfolds, it is expected to have a lasting impact on the lives of farmers and the broader community, contributing to a healthier and more resilient future for all.”

“Anglican Church Is Pentecostal”, Says Ogunedo, Anglican Bishop Diocese of Mbaise

0
Rev Chamberlain Chinedum Ogunedo

The Lord Bishop of the Anglican Communion, Diocese of Mbaise, the Rt. Rev Chamberlain Chinedum  Ogunedo, JP, has commended the good people of Mbaise in Imo State for the tremendous support his Episcopal Ministry has received in the past 15 years of his assumption of office, and expresses hope for more solidarity in the years ahead.

According to him, the Diocese has, in the last 15 years, grown “spiritually, numerically, and infrastructurally, and continue to strive for excellence in serving the Lord.”

He admitted that there had been challenges, including spiritual apathy and financial constraints peculiar with rural Dioceses.”

“However, through prayer, collaboration with clergy and laity, and strategic planning, we have been able to reasonably overcome these challenges.”

On his vision for the future, His Lordship said it is to “see our Diocese become a hub for spiritual growth, education and community development.”

He said the vision centres on building a strong financial base for the Diocese and subordinate Churches “so that congregants will worship their God with lesser financial burdens.”

He also pledged to see to clergy development, youth empowerment,  investments, and infrastructural enhancement.

Among the Bishop’s further commitment to education is the Diocese’s donation of land to the proposed University of Mbaise  with main campus at Ife.

The groundbreaking was done on January 3, this year and construction of the Administrative Block is ongoing.

In the words of the Bishop: “We have already given our land as our own equity because we love education and would do everything worth doing to see it grow…to promote academic excellence, character development, and community engagement.”

Bishop Ogunedo fielded additional questions.

Your Lordship, could you please explain what informed your decision to become an Anglican Priest?

My journey to becoming an Anglican priest began with a deep sense of calling and purpose. Growing up in a Christian family, I was exposed to the teachings of Christ from a young age. As a choir boy, I took the front row of the procession, with specially made robes. However, it was during my teenage years that I felt a strong sense of conviction to serve the Lord. This led me to pursue theological studies and eventually, ordination. My faith journey has been shaped by prayer, mentorship, and service to others.

For 15 years, you have been in charge of affairs of the Diocese of Mbaise as the Lord Bishop. What would you say are the major challenges you face?

As the Anglican Bishop of Mbaise Diocese, we have faced numerous challenges, including spiritual apathy, financial constraints, and infrastructural development, which are peculiar with rural Dioceses. However, through prayer, collaboration with clergy and laity, and strategic planning, we have been able to reasonably overcome these challenges. Our Diocese has grown spiritually, numerically, and infrastructurally, and we continue to strive for excellence in serving the Lord.

Furthermore, the church must engage with contemporary issues while remaining faithful to its teachings. We encourage our members to be mindful of their cultural context while upholding Christian values. We are bent on biblical principle, having nothing to do with alternative lifestyles, which have become peculiar with the Western world. Our worship services blend tradition with relevance, ensuring that our faith remains vibrant and meaningful in today’s world.

This week your Diocese will hold the 3rd session of its 11th Synod. What is the significance of Synod to the Anglican communion?

Synod is the highest decision-making body of the Church, constituted by three Houses, namely: House of Bishop, House of Clergy, and House of Laity, to discuss and make decisions on matters affecting the Diocese. Categorically speaking, the Anglican Church is Synodically Governed and Episcopally led.

A Synod year takes three Calender years, each marked as a session of the very Synod at issue. It symbolises unity, collaboration, and shared responsibility in governance. As we prepare for the 3rd Session of our 13th Synod, I encourage all delegates to participate actively, sharing their insights and perspectives to build a stronger and more vibrant diocese.

What is your reaction to the way youths of this day view Church?

Some youths may view the Church as out of touch or hypocritical. We must demonstrate genuine faith, compassion, and integrity. Our clergy and laity must model Christ-like behaviour, and we must engage youths in meaningful ways, teach the vital skills, listen to their concerns and empower them to serve God, the Church and society.

What is the relationship between the Anglican Church and the Pentecostal Church?

The truth is that any Church that preaches the functions and work of the Holy Spirit, is Pentecostal. Anglican is Pentecostal and clear cut distinction should be made between that and new generation Churches. The “New generation Churches” often offer dynamic worship experiences and personalised attention. We use some likely approaches while emphasising our own strengths in liturgy, tradition, and community. Christian parents should nurture their children’s faith, encourage open dialogue, and model consistent Christian living.

Can you explain your vision for the Mbaise Diocese in the next 10 years?

This is actually our 15th year in the Episcopal Ministry. By the grace of God, we are on a mission to achieving some reasonable feat, some of which have been concluded, while some are in our long-term vision list, to be achieved in the years ahead. My vision for the next 10 years is to see our diocese become a hub for spiritual growth, education, and community development. The vision centres on building a strong financial base for the Diocese and subordinate Churches, so that congregants will worship their God with lesser financial burden. We shall focus on clergy development, youth empowerment, Investments, and infrastructural development, ensuring that our diocese remains a beacon of hope and service in Mbaise.

What role does the Diocese play in the proposed University of Mbaise?

The Diocese of Mbaise is major stakeholder and partner in the proposed University of Mbaise. We are excited about the University of Mbaise’s potential. The Church has a special interest in education and we have already given our land as our own equity, because we love education and would do everything worth doing to see it grow. Our Diocese will collaborate with the University to promote academic excellence, character development, and community engagement. We look forward to a fruitful partnership that benefits both the diocese and the University.

Can you speak on Ecumenism and Interfaith Relations as it relates to other denominations in Mbaise-land?

Ecumenism is alive and well. We enjoy a positive relationship with Ahiara Catholic Diocese and other denominations both in Mbaise and Imo State. We collaborate on issues of mutual concern. Let me assure you and Nigerians that as a Diocese we shall  continue to foster unity among fellow Christians and people of other faith, working together to promote peace, justice, and the Gospel in Mbaise.

Defection: Fayose Vows To Stay In PDP, Hails Tinubu

Ayodele Fayose
Ayodele Fayose

A former Governor of Ekiti state, Ayodele Fayose has vowed not to leave the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. He said those that have left the party did so on choice.

The two-time Ekiti governor made this remark in Lagos after paying the Sallah homage to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The former governor also praised President Tinubu saying he has done his best to revamp the bad economy left by his predecessor, former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The remark also comes amidst the  gale of defections that have trailed the leading opposition party in the country. Not a few defectors, state governors, senators and members of the House of Representatives from the PDP have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in the last few weeks.

According to sources close to the PDP, what they described as the Tinubu’s Tsunami is expected to sweep more aggrieved politicians from the PDP and other opposition parties into the ruling party ahead the 2027 elections.

Instructively, Segun Sowumi a former spokesman for the PDP and ardent critic of President Tinubu has declared his intention to join the APC if appointed into a government position by the president. Political watchers in the country say this is the most trying times for the PDP, which once ruled the country for 16 years from 1999 to 2015.

“I, Ayo Fayose, will not move from PDP to any political party, not even APC. I’m this year, 65 years. It’s within the choices of those who’ve chosen to move,” the former governor said.

The magazine reported that two PDP state governors, Sheriff Obovrewori and Umo Eno of Delta and Akwa Ibom states have recently dumped their former party for the APC citing the need to join the mainstream politics at the centre.

For instance while speaking after defecting to the APC Governor Eno said the state needed to “move with time and flow” of the politics in the country.

He said: “I believe no one that has ever moved or changed party has ever consulted the way I have done.

“I did that because of the respect I have for all of you, stakeholders in Project Akwa Ibom. I did that knowing that each and every one of you needed to be consulted and informed.

“I needed to explain why I am moving, and at this point, that consultation culminated into meeting all the critical stakeholders in PDP last night in this hall, where I took time to explain to you why we must move.

“We must be able to interpret the time and flow with the time and not run away with tide.

“Having completed the rounds of my consultation, as your servant that you have elected to serve you, I, therefore, have decided to progressively move to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

‘Today, I have made the bold declaration to join that train.”

The PDp is currently impeded by some contending forces within its fold who are fighting desperately for its soul, with the allegation that the FCT Minister and former Governor of Rivers state, Nyesom Wike being at the middle of the crisis.

Fayose is Wike’s ally.

OPINION: Sin No More, Sanwo-Olu

0

By Reuben Abati

Nigerians woke up to the delightful news, Monday morning, that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, currently on Sallah vacation in Lagos, had decided, following entreaties from interested and concerned parties, to forgive his political godson, with whom there had been a frosty relationship for months. The political godson is Babajide Sanwoolu, the sitting governor of Lagos. It is common knowledge that till date no one can be governor of Lagos state without the blessing of President Tinubu. He has been the Kabiyesi of Lagos state politics long before he became the President of Nigeria. Every governor after his own tenure as governor of Lagos state (1999 – 2007) was handpicked by him.

Anyone who has ever held any important political position in Lagos since 1999, either as a councillor, local government chairman, member of the house of assembly, national assembly member, or a political appointee knows that he or she has held that position at the pleasure of the godfather, popularly known as Asiwaju or the Jagaban. One wrong step, any act of misdemeanour could land the person in the godfather’s black book.

Those who have found themselves in such a position would rather wish it had never happened. And so it happened to Governor Sanwo-Olu. The rift between the governor and his godfather became a matter of open, public knowledge during the president’s latest visit to Lagos for the Eid-el-Kabir break. When the president arrived at the Murtala Muhammad Airport in Lagos, it was reported that as courtesy and convention dictate, the governor had gone to the airport to receive him. He was reportedly snubbed publicly. The president by-passed the governor and shook hands with the deputy governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, and others. During the inauguration of the Phase one, 30 kilometres stretch of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, a major public event, the president again openly snubbed the governor. He refused to shake his hands. Rather than invite him to speak, he being the host governor, the president ignored Sanwo-Olu and asked Governor Dapo Abiodun, governor of neighbouring Ogun state, to speak. Everyone was shocked. The snub was so open, so clear, it was no longer a matter for speculation.

It was at this point that peacemakers who had knowledge of the rift between godfather and godson intensified their efforts to broker peace. They seem to have succeeded as reported at length by ThisDay newspaper of June 9. The newspaper refers to them as “Wise Men”. The Holy Scripture at Matthew 5: 9 says “Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God.”

The peacemakers include the chairman of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) in Lagos state, Alhaji Tajudeen Olusi, Chairman of the All-Progressives Congress in the state, Hon. Cornelius Ojelabi and other members of the GAC (the Baba Sope group) in Lagos. They appealed to the president to forgive the governor and others who might have erred in his sight. The president reportedly responded that “It’s all over now. All is forgiven,” and that he had also accepted the report on the local council primary elections. Members of the GAC were said to have immediately prostrated for the president. Some of them are either his age-mates or older than him. His hands were tied.

Outside of the GAC members who were granted audience, ThisDay reports that quite a number of “wise men” also intervened to make the truce possible. They include Chief Dipo Eludoyin, Mr. Gilbert Chagoury, Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka, Mr. Dele Alake, Aremo Olusegun Osoba, Chief Bisi Akande, Chief James Ibori, and Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola. There are probably traditional rulers, like the Ooni of Ife, Ojaja II, and others in the background, which means the ThisDay list may not be exhaustive.

Governor Sanwo-Olu owes the peacemakers a debt of gratitude. They are individually and collectively people that the president respects and whose friendship he values. The governor is also a very lucky man. Godfathers in Nigerian politics do not often forgive their godsons that offend them. They crush them. They inflict much pain to teach them a lesson and to deter other present and future godsons who may be tempted to grow wings.

Whoever is in doubt should revisit the travails of Gov. Rasheed Ladoja of Oyo State (2003 – 2006, 2006 – 2007) and his Godfather, Alhaji Lamidi Adedibu; Gov. Chris Ngige of Anambra State (2003 – 2006) and his godfathers, Chris and Andy Uba; former Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State (2016 – 2024), and his Godfather, Senator Adams Oshiomhole; Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State (2015 -2019), and his Godfather, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State (2023 to date) and Godfather Nasir el Rufai, and Governor Sim Fubara of Rivers State (2023 to date, currently suspended), and his godfather, Minister Nyesom Wike. It is not often that the godson succeeds in driving the political godfather out of town as Gov Uba Sani may have done, or gets reinstated in office as in the examples of Ladoja and Chris Ngige.

It is usually the case that the godson gets punished. By promising to forgive Governor Sanwo-Olu and everyone who has erred against him, President Tinubu has shown magnanimity. He may have forgiven, and may not forget, but the act of forgiveness is in itself divine. By that singular gesture, President Tinubu has set a good example for other godfathers in Nigeria’s political landscape. Those godfathers who go about threatening to fight those who have offended them “to the finish” should learn from the president’s leadership example. The symbolism of the Eid el Adha season inheres in the ideal of sacrifice. Godfathers should project the milk of human kindness by learning to sacrifice their egos. As the folk saying states, it is only the elder who learns to forgive who can build a large community.

It is now up to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu “to go and sin no more”. We have argued elsewhere about the menace of godfathers in Nigerian politics. In a heavily competitive atmosphere, those who seek advancement in politics cannot rely solely on the wisdom of the electorate. Nigerian politics is expensive. It is money-driven. Godfathers provide the financial resources. They fund the political machinery. They mobilise goodwill. The electorate and party agents listen to the godfather who is part-financier, part-cultural leader, even if they do not know the candidate. Disagreements with the godfather usually occur when the godson, now in office gets so carried away, he begins to assert himself, act independently, expresses opinions that are unacceptable to the godfather, or as in the case of Ladoja and Ngige fails to honour deals previously agreed to with the godfather. The average political godson asserts himself at his own risk. It is instructive that the referent here is masculine as there are extremely few goddaughters involved. This is a graphic illustration of the underdeveloped and exclusionary nature of Nigeria’s democracy.

What could possibly have been Sanwo-Olu’s offence in the present case? Those who are familiar with the matter have come up with a number of possibilities but these can at best be regarded as assumptions since neither the president nor Sanwo-Olu has publicly disclosed what transpired between them.

The speculations are as follows:

One: It is said that the rift could be traced to the 2023 general election. It would be recalled that the president, then a candidate on the platform of the APC scored less than 50% in Lagos, his very own political stronghold. He was outperformed by Mr. Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP), who won the state with 45.81% in the February 25, 2023 election. This was a huge political embarrassment. President Tinubu thus found himself in a situation similar to that of President Olusegun Obasanjo in the 1999 Presidential election in Ogun State and indeed the South West. Jagaban was one of the opposition politicians who laughed at OBJ then: how he even lost at the polling booth in front of his own home. For Tinubu who had earned a reputation over the years as a master political strategist, it was a deep cut for him to be defeated by Peter Obi in Lagos! When the gubernatorial election held on March 18, 2023 with Sanwo-Olu as candidate, the APC won Lagos with 65.95% of the votes. It turned out that on February 25, APC party agents were not mobilised to man polling centres during the presidential election. The feedback was that the governor said there was no cash, allowing Labour Party agents to have a field day at the polling centres! But cash became available ahead of the governor’s own election. With all his claim to political mastery, President Tinubu cannot in all honesty accuse any of his supporters in other states of failing to win enough votes for him, when he also fell short in his own state. Where was Sanwo-Olu, the sitting governor of Lagos state? What did he fail to do to help the godfather?

Two: as if that was not embarrassing enough, there was also the case of the speaker of the Lagos house of assembly, Hon. Mudasiru Obasa. There had been no love lost between the governor and the speaker. In November 2024, when the governor went to present Budget 2025 proposals to the assembly, accompanied by members of the GAC, they were reportedly kept waiting for four whole hours by the speaker. This was clearly disrespectful. When the president visited Lagos in December 2024, both the GAC and the governor reported Obasa to the president. He was summoned and was reprimanded by the president. The president did not want another Rivers state in his own backyard. But if he thought he had settled the brewing conflict between the executive and the legislature in his state, he was mistaken. When the president travelled abroad in January, and Obasa travelled to the United States, the speaker’s impeachment was quickly arranged and he was replaced by his own deputy. When Obasa returned from his trip, he refused to vacate the seat, and literally, hell was let loose in Lagos. It was said that the president not only wondered who on earth could have overruled him in Lagos state, he was further miffed when the governor feigned ignorance about the crisis in the Lagos state house of assembly. If he had overlooked the election matter, he did not this time around. He shut the door against Sanwo-Olu thereafter. Every effort by the governor to see the president was rebuffed. Whenever the president travelled either to Doha or France, Sanwo-Olu travelled hoping to be granted audience. But no way. Eventually, President Tinubu directed that Hon. Obasa must be reinstated as speaker of the Lagos state house of assembly. Nobody needed to tell the governor that he was in trouble.

Three: there is this additional matter of a certain merry widow who went to the Caribbean to throw a lavish birthday party in an exotic, all-expenses paid hotel resort. Governor Sanwo-Olu was reportedly sighted at the party behaving as if he had inherited another man’s workshop! He sneaked out of town, abandoned his duty post, and people saw him, merrying around in a strange land, and they talked. They whispered. The president of course must have heard too and he thought the governor was beginning to lose concentration.

But all that is over now… The president says all sins are forgiven. Sanwo-Olu is old enough to know that his “enemies” would now go into an overdrive to watch everything he does or says, and what he fails to do, so they can build another case against him, to tell the president that he is not deserving of the forgiveness that he has been granted.

He is advised to stay away from sin and sinful activities. He stands to lose nothing if he extends the olive branch to his known detractors. He will lose more if he tries to fight back. It was good to see him at the president’s Lagos residence granting an interview and saying there is no discord between him, the son, and the father, President Tinubu. He is like the Biblical prodigal son, whose story is told in Luke 15: 11-32.

In his joy and celebration, Governor Sanwo-Olu should reflect on lessons he may have learnt. He should be concerned about his political future, for having served as governor for nearly two terms, he certainly should not do anything to risk a spell in political wilderness. Above all, he should not meddle in the politics of other states. He should concentrate on the mandate that he has been given in Lagos state. Let him go and sin no more.

Wike To PDP: Avoid Extinction, Zone 2027 Presidency To South

Nyesom Wike - FCT Minister
Nyesom Wike, FCT Minister

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike has insisted that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, must zone its presidential candidate to the south in  a south in 2027.

The minister said this is the position of some PDP stakeholders after a meeting in Abuja, the nation’s capital on Monday.

He said this is the only way to save the party from being driven into extinction, saying the PDP is still paying for the mistakes it made in 2023.

The minister made the remark yesterday in a communique he read after a meeting by some PDP stakeholders, which included former Governors of Benue and Abia states, Samuel Ortom and Okezie Ikpeazu, the PDP National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, who the minister said remained the substantive scribe in line with the Supreme Court judgment.

The concerned stakeholders also affirmed their support for the Committee recently set up by the leadership of the party, headed by a former Senate President, Bukola Saraki to reconcile some aggrieved members of the party.

The communique reads: “At a meeting of the aforementioned group on the 9th day of June, 2025 in Abuja, the state of affairs of the party; the need to reinforce internal democracy, equity and justice within the ranks of the party were discussed and carefully reviewed.

“The eminent stakeholders and concerned leaders drawn from the various states of the federation, took a deep and strong view of the situation in our party and came to the following conclusions:

  • The seemingly intractable crisis in the party is as a result of inexplicable refusal of a few to adhere to the party Constitution, with particular reference to Section 36(1)(a) (b) and (c), Sections 47(3)(5) and 48(1)(i) and the definitive Supreme Court Judgment regarding the position of the office of the National Secretary of the party;
  • The eminent stakeholders and concerned leaders are alarmed that the party is in an inevitable path to self- annihilation, if urgent steps are not taken to rein in the desperate, divisive and selfish tendencies that brought the party to its knees in the lead up to the 2023 election.
  • These divisive tendencies, unfortunately, have found expression in the conduct of certain interest within the ranks of our party both at NEC, NWC and Board of trustees level.”

The stakeholders also resolved:

  • That to finally arrest the inexorable drift towards extinction in our party, the party must, without further delay, respect the judgment of the Supreme Court. We, therefore, unequivocally reaffirm Senator Sam Anyanwu as the duly elected and substantive National Secretary of our great party.
  • In the spirit of fairness, inclusion, federal Character principles and respect for our party Constitution, the Party must make an unequivocal pronouncement Zoning its presidential candidate to the south in the 2027 elections after the unbroken years of Northern President under President Muhammadu Buhari.
  • In line with the provisions of our party constitution only the National Secretary, Senator Sam Anyanwu, can issue notices of meeting of the National Convention, National Executive Committee, National Caucus and the National Working Committee and to this end all notices not issued by him and actions founded on them, including correspondences to INEC are null and void and of no effect whatsoever.
  • Furthermore, it is clear from the Constitution that only the National Convention, properly and duly constituted can remove Senator Sam Anyanwu, the National Secretary, arising from his status as a member of the National Executive Committee of the party.
  • We, therefore, demand that the acting National Chairman and the National Secretary jointly issue a notice to INEC with an attached agenda for the NEC meeting of the party being the only pathway to abide by extant laws.
  • We, the stakeholders reiterate our commitment to our great party and urge all members to uphold the rule of law, respect constitutional mandate, resist all machinations aimed at destabilizing the party and support the efforts of the National Reconciliation Committee headed by His Excellency, Senator Bukola Saraki.”

The magazine reported that the party had on May 12, 2025, appointed Saraki  as head of a 7-man committee to finetune modalities for the upcoming National Executive Committee, NEC), and reconcile some aggrieved members back to the party.

State Of The Nation: CSOs Hail Tinubu’s Education, Macroeconomic Initiatives

Njiko Igbo Forum will not support Tinubu

The Independent Civil Society Groups in Nigeria, CSGN, has hailed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as  ‘forward’ looking leader citing his ‘innovative’ programmes in the education sector.

The group gave the verdict on Monday while releasing the report on the president’s Renewed Hope Agenda and National Budget Strategies.

The president of the group Emmanuel Agabi said the administration has performed well in the education sector, citing initiative such as the Nigeria Education Loan Fund,  NELFUND, and the three million Technical Talent programme, apart from showing prudence in the management and allocation of resources.

Through these programmes , Agabi said, the president has plugged loopholes, promote social inclusion, reduced poverty and supported disadvantaged groups across the country.

He cited the 2025 Budget as a further commitment by the administration to prudently manage the country’s resources, noting however that challenges in the areas of security and food production must be immediately addressed.

Agabi: “The 2025 budget reflects a commitment to prudent financial management and strategic allocation of resources.

These measures aim to promote social inclusion, reduce poverty, and support economic resilience among disadvantaged groups.

“The government should intensify efforts to stabilise the macroeconomic environment, enhance security, and implement targeted interventions to support food production and distribution.”

The civil society’s position on the state of the nation is coming as the Tinubu’s administration is marking two years in office.

While the government has scored itself high not a few Nigerians have criticised the government for alleged insensitivity to the plight of Nigerians which have suffered under the brunt of its policies.

The critics of the administration insist that it has brought untold hardship to the country since President bola Ahmed Tinubu came to office on may 29, 2023. They cited the removal of fuel subsidy, convergence of the exchange rate amongs others as being responsible for the current economic challenges that the country now faces.

The administration however insist that it’s laying a foundation for the country’s future  prosperity.
