President Bola Tinubu has stabilised the economy and laid the groundwork for a broader recovery – Sarah Meyssonnier

“Halfway through the first presidential term of Bola Tinubu, who completes two years in office this Thursday, Nigeria is in better shape than at any time in the past decade.

That may come as a surprise — or even sound like a sick joke — to tens of millions of Nigerians who are suffering the worst cost of living crisis in a generation”.

For years, Nigeria has been not so much a sleeping giant as a comatose one. Home to nearly one in five sub-Saharan Africans, its market of 230mn people should be an engine of continental growth. Instead it has been a drag, stuck in an oil-dependent rut, plagued by banditry and run by a political elite bent on self-enrichment. It is hardly surprising that all but a few investors may have missed the fact that Nigeria has turned a corner.

Halfway through the first presidential term of Bola Tinubu, who completes two years in office this Thursday, Nigeria is in better shape than at any time in the past decade. That may come as a surprise — or even sound like a sick joke — to tens of millions of Nigerians who are suffering the worst cost of living crisis in a generation.

Yet Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos and the country’s wiliest politician in a generation, has stabilised the economy and laid the groundwork for a broader recovery. This year, the World Bank expects growth of 3.7 per cent, in what would be Nigeria’s best performance since 2014 save for a post-Covid rebound. Most ordinary Nigerians won’t feel that yet. But it is a decent performance when oil prices are weak. The tiny green shoots have come because Tinubu’s government has tackled — albeit in often haphazard fashion — debilitating structural distortions.

On day one Tinubu removed a ruinously expensive fuel subsidy. More important still, the central bank has restored monetary policy orthodoxy after a shambolic era in which only cronies with access to cheap dollars benefited. After a dangerous overshoot, the naira has stabilised, with the gap between the official and black market rate shrinking to almost nothing.

The central bank has stopped printing money to pay for government profligacy. Politicians still spend too much, often on fripperies like an extravagant presidential jet, but at least the government has begun to increase tax receipts.

Investors do not live in constant fear of a devaluation and can readily access dollars. That may eventually help Nigeria to diversify, but shorter term it is positive that oil production has recovered from a nadir of 1mn barrels a day to nearly 1.5mn last month. Oil theft has been reduced and local companies are squeezing more out of marginal fields.

That so much has been achieved by a government stuffed with cronies — and, to be fair, one or two competent technocrats — shows how much could be achieved if Nigeria really got its act together. There are plenty of ways for Tinubu to build on a promising start.

First, his government has to tackle inflation — still running at 24 per cent — with more urgency. Food is the biggest driver. State governments need to increase supply by providing farm inputs, security and better access to market.

Second, it must build on tax reform by achieving its stated aim of doubling the ratio of tax collected to 18 per cent of GDP. Some of that should be spent on woefully neglected schools and clinics — even more urgent given foreign aid cuts. That will bring benefits of its own but, just as importantly, will also help to establish a social contract, which has been dangerously lacking.

Third, and perhaps most crucial, the government must confront banditry and terrorism with the same single-mindedness as it did distorted monetary policy. The army needs cleaning up as urgently as did the central bank.

As Nigeria’s election cycle edges towards 2027, Tinubu may be tempted to slow the pace of change. That would be a mistake. He should forge ahead, with the overriding aim of making ordinary Nigerians — not just investors — feel the benefits of shock therapy.

Emefiele Intensifies Battle To Recover Seized 753 Abuja Property

Emefiele Property

Embattled former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN , CBN Godwin Emefiele has filed a suit at the Court of Appeal in Abuja, trying to overturn the recent forfeiture of 753 housing units  situated in the Lokogoma district of Abuja to the federal government.

According to a petition filed through his legal counsel , A.M Kotoye the former Nigeria’s apex bank governor accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, of trying to shave his head behind him, saying he did not know that the houses have been forfeited to the authority.

On April 28, 2025 Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie of the FCT High Court ordered the final forfeiture of the estate located at Plot 109, Cadastral Zone CO9, Lokogoma District measuring 150,462.84 square metres, based on an application filed by the EFCC. The judge had dismissed the cross-application filed by Emefiele over the issue.

Last week, the EFCC handed over the property to the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, who said the estate will be auctioned to Nigerians.

While inaugurating the committee on Monday, Dangiwa, said the federal government is poised to ensure that the seized buildings are transformed to affordable and living homes for Nigerians. “The committee was constituted based on the vision of Mr President and the Ministry’s housing reform drive to ensure that the recovered property is swiftly transformed into liveable, secure, and affordable homes for the benefit of Nigerians,” Dangiwa said.

But reacting Emefiele said he was not well informed of the court proceedings that led to the forfeiture of the properties, saying he was busy with other legal cases preferred against him by the EFCC, noting that he was “unaware of the forfeiture” order.

According to the former CBN Governor, the forfeiture order was not well published in the newspapers as required  by the law, making it difficult for him to notice.

He described the forfeiture as a miscarriage of ‘justice’ that should not be allowed to stand, saying the court order was against the Constitution.

According to his counsel the court process at the Court of Appeal has already been served to the government, which he said is already in the process of auctioning the estate. The auction plan must be put on hold, he said,  pending  the determination of the matter at the appelate court.

Emefiele: “The entire ruling is a miscarriage of justice.

“The failure of the trial judge to properly evaluate the affidavit and documents before him is perverse and has caused a miscarriage of justice.

“The orders were made in breach of the 1999 Constitution and are therefore null and void.

“We are aware that the properties may soon be sold to the public. We have already served the EFCC with a notice of appeal and an injunction.”

The magazine reported that the estate is part of the multi-million property the embattled former Nigerian CBN Governor had forfeited to the federal government which include N830 million, $4.7 million among other slew of properties linked to him.

Emefiele is still being prosecuted in court by the EFCC for alleged graft and terrorism financing charges.

Edo State Health Insurance Commission, (EDOHIC) has enrolled 450 kids from five registered orphanages into the State Health Insurance scheme.

In addition to the enrollments, the commission settled outstanding hospital bills for several children whose parents or guardians could not afford medical treatment.

Director General of EDOHIC, Augusta Ikpea-Enaholo, explained that the intervention immediately relieved affected families and reinforced the government’s commitment to universal health coverage.

While emphasising the importance of inclusiveness in health care, the Director, Public Relations Unit of the Commission, Omonigho Trinitas, who represented the Director General of EDOHIC,  said every child deserves a healthy start in life.

She pointed out that the outreach is part of the commission’s broader vision to leave no one behind, especially those in the margins of society.

She added, “The Children’s Day outreach by EDOHIC not only brought cheer but also reaffirmed the Edo State Government’s dedication to child health and welfare, setting an example of compassionate governance and proactive healthcare delivery.

“In a heartfelt gesture to commemorate this year’s Children’s Day, EDOHIC embarked on a statewide outreach, bringing hope and healthcare support to hundreds of vulnerable children across Edo State.

“The commission visited five registered orphanage homes and three government health facilities spread across the three senatorial districts, Edo South, Edo Central, and Edo North, in a series of activities aimed at improving child welfare and access to healthcare.

“A major highlight of the celebration was the enrollment of over 450 orphans from the visited orphanage homes into the Edo State Health Insurance Scheme, ensuring they now have access to quality and affordable healthcare.

“In addition to the enrollments, the commission settled outstanding hospital bills for several children whose parents or guardians could not afford medical treatment, which provided immediate relief to affected families and reinforced the government’s commitment to universal health coverage.”

She added that the initiative aligns with the commission’s mandate to provide equitable health coverage to all residents, especially the most vulnerable.

PDP Crisis Deepens Over Anyanwu

Senator Samuel Anyanwu and Rt Hon Ude Okoye

Following the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC to recognition of Samuel Anyanwu as the National Secretary of the the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, the party appears to be deeper in crisis. Majority of the PDP leaders including state governors elected on the platform of the party prefer Sunday Ude-Okoye, a former National Youth Leader of the party.

The development is also coming a few days after the South east Committee of the PDP threatened a mass defection from the party if Anyanwu is not removed from his position.

Political analysts insist that the manner the party is able to resolve the National secretary issue will make or mar the opposition party ahead the 2027 general election.

On Monday INEC informed a fact-finding committee set up by the party, led by the Governor of Taraba state Agbu Kefas to the effect that the commission has  recognised Anyanwu as the party’s scribe.

According to sources privy to the meeting, the Prof. Mahmood Yakubu-led INEC told the representatives of the PDP, which included the Governors Peter Mbah of Enugu, Dauda Lawal of Zamfara state and the party’s National Legal Adviser that its decision was based on the recent ruling of the Supreme Court.

The committee had on Tuesday  communicated INEC’s position to the PDP 96th  National Executive Council, NEC, meeting which held at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

The magazine reported that the PDP NEC meeting finally held yesterday after months of bickering among major players of the party, which include the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, state governors elected on the party’s platform and others interests who are trying to hold the opposition party in the jugular, using the National secretary tussle as a choke-hold.

Recall also that the minister had on Sunday insisted that Anyanwu, whom he’s supporting, remains the National Secretary, saying he will fight to the end to ensure that his ally is not improperly removed, noting that the issue is one of the agreements reached by major stakeholders, at the meeting held at the Bauchi state Government Lodge in Abuja, last month.

The magazine learned that following the report submitted to the PDP NEC, the party is now more confused than ever as to how to handle the matter, considering that “the General Secretary is the engine room of the party,” a political source familiar with the matter said.

According to the source, there’s nothing the other “faction” opposed to Wike “could do at the moment” so long INEC recognises Anywanwu, it’s either they allow his tenure to end or continue to fight, which as it’s cannot take the party anywhere.”

Anyanwu’s tenure is expected to end by November this year, but a National Convention is expected to hold around August, to elect new Executives, closes sources in the party said

Sources in the party told the magazine that the party had expected that the meeting with INEC on Monday would turn out positively and in favour of those who wanted Anyanwu out. But the anti Wike/ Anyanwu were disappointed when the commission affirmed the former PDP Governorship candidate in Imo state as the authentic National secretary of the party.

“it was on the basis of the outcome from INEC that the party postponed its meeting to June” to enable more time on how to resolve the issue, another source informed the magazine.

The magazine reports that the PDP South east Zonal Committee of the party  had a fortnight ago issued a communique threatening to leave the party if Anyanwu remained the scribe instead of Ude Okoye, which the zone has nominated to the position.

The Southeast PDP zonal executive committee had in a communique handed over to Taofeek Arapaja, the Deputy Chairman South, by its leader Senator Osita Ngwu after a meeting in Enugu threatened a mass pull out from the party if their choice of Ude-Okoye is rejected.

Below, a portion of the communique:

“Mr. Chairman, on the 14th of May, 2025, the Southeast Zonal Executive Committee met at Enugu State Government House and a forum was fully formed.

“After the meeting, a committee was raised and the reason why we visited here today is to make a presentation of the communique that was issued at the end of the meeting.

‘’Mr. Chairman, if you recall, on March 31st, 2025, the Supreme Court, which is the apex court of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, brought to a closure the protracted issue surrounding the puzzle of the National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party.

“Following that judgment of the Supreme Court, the PDP Governors’ Forum also met in Oyo State on the 14th of April, 2025, and passed a resolution. You can also recall that here, at the National Office on April 29th, the National Working Committee met and adopted that resolution of the governor’s forum.

“And what is that resolution? The resolution is that the South East Zonal Executive Committee should meet and nominate a candidate that will fill in the position of the National Secretary. Mr. Chairman, I need to remind us, or make it clear, that the position of the South East on this issue has always been to find a pathway to a lasting resolution of the impacts and crisis in the PDP.

“And also, in all intent and purpose, to ensure that this party continues to progress well. We are looking for a lasting peace so that we can perform better in the upcoming and subsequent election.

‘’Mr. Chairman, from our communique, which is in this report that I am going to hand over to you, and in the meeting that was recently held by the South East Executive Committee of the party at the Zonal Office, we unanimously agreed and nominated the former youth leader of the party, Rt. Honorable S.K. Ude-Okoye, to be our nominee for the position of the National Secretary of our great party, the PDP.

‘’Mr. Chairman, we are going to give you this report, and our prayers and our urge and our appeal is that this party should carefully look through even other precedents that have been set in replacement of National Working Committee members or other officers of the committee of the PDP that has been done. We are not trying to set a precedent. We are not trying to do a new thing because precedent has been set.’

‘’We are asking you to look at a zone, who has been the backdrop and backbone of the PDP, a zone who has delivered all the National Assembly members, all governors to the PDP in the past, a zone that is eager to redeem its past glory. We are praying that the request of this zone should not be jeopardized. Let us look at it based on the point of its merits.

‘’Let it be a stepping stone in our urge and our drive to reposition our party. We are not here to make another request, but we are speaking to our consciences so that whatever decision that is taken at the end should be for the interest of the party and a position that is going to support us, a position that is going to lift the morale of the members of this great party towards a sustainable growth and a path of recovery.’’

A gale of cult- related violence ravaging Ondo State has spread to Ondo town where violent cult clash, on Tuesday evening, left four persons dead and five others injured.

The incident occurred around Ife Garage, Sabo, and Christ Land in the Oka area of the city, where masked men suspected to be members of a rival cult group allegedly shot and killed the victims.

According to eyewitnesses, three members of the Ẹiyẹ confraternity were shot dead in a bloody clash at Ife Garage, while one was killed at Sabo, in front of a local shop popularly known as “Mama Shop.”

The police confirmed the incidents, describing the deceased as notorious cult members who had been on the police command’s wanted list.

State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Olayinka Ayanlade confirmed the incident and assured the public that security agencies are on the ground to protect lives and property.

“The command can confirm the murder of four people and five injured, all of whom belong to one cult group or the other. I want to appeal to members of the community to go about their lawful businesses without fear or panic.”

Following the incident, the police conducted a raid on Wednesday morning at New Garage, Ayeyemi in Ondo, breaking doors to gain entry and arrest suspected cult members.

“Arrests are still ongoing  with some suspects already in custody. Although the exact number could not be ascertained.

“Desperate times require desperate actions. Anyone arrested during the raid has one or two things to do with the clash. Our men have acted rightly, and if any of them are found to have acted wrongly, they will face disciplinary action.”

The police personnel are currently patrolling the affected areas, particularly New Garage in Ayeyemi, believed to be a stronghold of one of the cult factions.

Ayanlade added that efforts are ongoing to apprehend those behind the killings, ensuring justice for the victims and their families.

State Of The Nation: Obi Blames Killings On Failure Of Leadership

0
Peter Obi US Lecture

The 2023 Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Peter Obi has lamented the spate of killings in in some part of Taraba, Benue and Kogi states, describing the development as a fail of leadership.

The opposition leader made the remark on Wednesday on his verified twitter handle, saying countless lives, including children and women have been lost.

According to him, the response of the federal government to the killings have been very abysmal because it remains ‘week and muted,’ adding that the situation appears to have been accepted as the normal way of life to live in the country.

The top  politician said the killings pointed to the fact that law and order has collapsed in the country, noting that the situation portends grave signal for the present and future of the country.

The killings in  “Taraba, Benue, and Kogi States in recent times is heartbreaking. What we are witnessing is not merely violence. It is a failure of leadership and a gaping wound in the soul of our nation,” he said.

Obi stated that the victims of the killings “are children, women, and even men of faith,” and the casualties of a prolonged crisis that shows no sign of abating.

“The bloodshed is staggering, yet the response remains weak and muted. As homes are destroyed and communities torn apart, we risk normalizing the unacceptable: mass killings, displacement, and the collapse of law and order. These are not mere statistics, they are our fellow Nigerians. Each life lost is a tragedy that must not be ignored.

“I have always maintained that the primary duty of the National government is the protection of life and property. When this duty is repeatedly ignored when innocent citizens are butchered and nothing changes, we must ask ourselves: What kind of nation are we building? What future are we promising our children?

“I mourn with the good people of Taraba, Benue, and Kogi. I share their grief, and I feel their pain. But I also raise my voice because silence in the face of such horror is complicity. We need urgent action, not rhetoric. We need justice, not excuses. We as leaders must value human life and will defend it with everything we have,” Obi said.

NAHCON: Crisis Over Absence Of Medical Facilities In Saudi Arabia Despite FG-sponsored 300 Medical Personnel

Mecca

By Akinwale Kasali

The deaths of Adizatu Dazumi, a 75-years old Edo State born indigene and Alhaji Galeh Saleh, a prominent Abia State businessman, who was until his death the Chairman of the Lokpanta Cattle Market,  has exposed the failure of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, NAHCON, to set up Medical Facilities and Clinic in Mecca and Medina, three weeks after their arrival  for the Holy Islamic Pilgrimage.

Thousands of Nigerians who had gone to the annual religious ritual have, allegedly, been left with no access to Clinic and other medical facilities set up by Nigeria, despite the huge amount of Naira spent by the  Federal Government to sponsor 300 Medical Personnel and procure drugs for Nigerians in the Holy Land.

There has always been  Government run Clinics for Nigerians who had gone to perform Hajj. Sadly, the over 60,000 Nigerians who had gone for this year’s Pilgrimage are left without medical welfare.

It would be recalled that on April 24th NAHCON inaugurated its National Medical Team in Abuja, led by Dr. Saidu Ahmad Dumbulwa, to oversee the screening and deployment of medical personnel for the pilgrimage.

The Commission approved over 300 healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, and pharmacists, for this year’s exercise.

However, more than three weeks after their arrival in Saudi Arabia, the personnel remain inactive, with no clinics set up for them to operate.

This deployment marks the largest medical team in NAHCON’s history, both in terms of personnel-to-pilgrim ratio and global scale.

It was alleged by stakeholders that the NAHCON leadership has exploited the medical team as a smokescreen to ferry allies and family members to Saudi Arabia under the guise of providing healthcare services for pilgrims.

This allegation comes despite earlier assurances from the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Ali Pate, who, during an inspection of NAHCON’s medical arrangements in the kingdom on March 25, 2025, pledged improved medical support for Nigerian pilgrims.

In a statement issued by NAHCON’s Head of Public Affairs, Muhammad Musa, Professor Pate was quoted as saying, “Given the global health landscape-ranging from meningitis outbreaks to polio concerns, it is imperative we meet and exceed Saudi Arabia’s health requirements.”

Nigerian Medical Mission to Saudi Arabia is currently led by Dr. Sani Garba, with Abdullahi Danzabuwa overseeing pharmacy operations and Jummai Momoh heading the Nursing Unit.

Nigerian pilgrims began arriving in Medinah on May 9, 2025, but nearly three weeks later, NAHCON had yet to establish a single functioning clinic in either Medinah or Mecca as of Tuesday, May 27th, 2025.

It is being alleged that NAHCON’s inability to secure the required operating licences from Saudi Arabia authorities has stalled the establishment of the Clinics till now, prompting Nigerian Pilgrims requiring Medical attention to seek care at private Saudi clinics often at high personal cost, or endure long waits at public hospitals in the Arab country.

It was, however, gathered that NAHCON had contracted a Saudi firm to process the clinic licences, deviating from the traditional Government to Government approach, which has raised further concerns.

Officials of NAHCON it was gathered, allegedly, confirmed to Sahara Reporters that the Commission collected Six Saudi Riyals from each of the over 60,000 Nigerian pilgrims to cover Clinic Services amounting to a total of 360,000 Riyals, at the prevailing parallel market exchange rate of ₦430 to a Riyal.

This, however, translates to over ₦155 million which was reportedly paid to a Saudi firm for provision of healthcare facilities for Nigerians.

Despite this payment, Nigerian pilgrims in need of medical attention are currently relying on healthcare services provided by Medical Personnel deployed by State Pilgrims’ welfare Boards—a practice that contravenes Saudi regulations.

The idleness of the 300 Medical Personnel who were funded by the FG to Saudi Arabia has further raised concern, prompting Stakeholders and Nigerians to query NAHCON.

The funding of the 300 Medical Personnel by the FG for NAHCON may have gulped, at least, ₦10 million on each of the Medical Personnel, covering costs for official Hajj Visas, return Airfare, Masha’ir Services, accommodation, and a $2,000 Basic Travel Allowance, BTA.

The total expenditure is estimated at around ₦3 Billion.

This has, however, brought to fore the call for anti graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, to investigate the composition of the National Medical Team; and also its failure to establish functional Clinics in Mecca and Medinah, and the multi-Billion-Naira budget spent on the initiative.

The outbreak has been reported at Mbutu Community, Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State, and has led to the deaths of six children within one week,  prompting an immediate closure of all schools in the area.

The Chairman of Aboh Mbaise Local Council, Iheukwumere Alaribe, confirmed the development in a statement, adding that the Local Government has taken a swift action to curb further spread.

“Schools in Mbutu have been temporarily closed, and parents have been advised to keep their children indoors. Diphtheria claimed the lives of the children less than a week after its outbreak.”

The Chairman stated that the World Health Organisation (WHO), the Department of Disease Prevention and Control in the Imo State Ministry of Health, and health workers from Aboh Mbaise  were working tirelessly to investigate and contain the outbreak.

“An isolation centre has been established at Mbutu Health Centre, with health workers deployed to quarantine children, who may have been exposed to the disease and to provide care for affected families.”

Alaribe also urged parents to take urgent steps to vaccinate their children.

“In light of this outbreak, parents who have not yet vaccinated their children are strongly urged to do so without delay.

“Vaccinations are crucial for preventing the spread of diseases and protecting our children’s health.”

The Chairman appealed to the public to remain calm and cooperate with health authorities.

“We encourage the public to remain calm and cooperate with the relevant authorities as we work to control this outbreak. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.”

Diphtheria, a highly infectious disease caused by the toxin-producing bacterium Corynebacterium diphtheriae, primarily affects the nose and throat but can also impact the skin.

It spreads through respiratory droplets from coughing or sneezing, or via direct contact with infected individuals or contaminated objects.
