“FCT Workers Being Used By Opposition To Embarrass Me” – Wike

Nyesom Wike - FCT Minister

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Minister.of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike has accused protesting civil servants of being used to blackmail and embarrass him.

He, however, maintained that he will not be cowed, nor succumb to what he described as cheap blackmail.

Wike spoke against the backdrop of the trending allegation of land grabbing against him and some family members and the ongoing street protest embarked upon by aggrieved workers.

At his monthly media briefing on Thursday June 3, 2025 in Abuja, the FCT  accused some workers of the FCT of being used by some disgruntled opposition figures to tarnish his image and that of his family.

His only offence, he said, is his insistence on doing the right thing. While dismissing the allegation of allotting hundreds of hectares of the FCT land to a company in which his son has an interest, Wike blamed the aggrieved workers of being behind the peddling of such unsubstantiated claims.

Wike alleged that the workers are against him because of his modest achievements and insistence that it will “not be  business as usual” in the administration of the FCT.

“What I will not take is a threat. I will not be intimidated. There are processes. You can just go and carry placards to embarrass me because the opposition is using you .On that note, because of the achievements we have recorded, I will not listen to you.

“They ( workers) are saying that part of the reasons they are protesting is because of lack of promotion. Now, they didn’t get promotion before I came on board, and they didn’t kill anybody.

“Now that I have come, they suddenly realized that they have not been getting promotions. The truth is that our commissioning of projects has become a problem and the reason they are doing what they doing”, Wike stated.

Further speaking, the FCT Minister , alleged that another aspect of the problem is his refusal to allow some workers to be contractors as usual.

According to him, most civil servants in the FCT, before now, had been involved in the cornering of contracts, a practice which he has so far resisted.

“They want to be contractors and civil servants at the same time. That is what has been killing the system.

“So many things were not working before we came . Because we have come to change the system, the workers, especially, the beneficiaries of the old rotten arrangements are fighting back.

“Now you have locked the gates to the offices, and still want to be paid salary. Where should we stay to sign the salary? From where will they collect the salary?

“Shamelessly, they have not asked where I stayed to sign the salary they are collecting”, the FCT Minister fumed.

The Source reports that teachers’ workers from the six FCT council areas, and their health sector counterparts have been on indefinite industrial action for over three months.

Their grievances revolve around the alleged failure of the authorities to implement the N70,000 new minimum wage, as well as payments of outstanding arrears.

The protest and picketing of offices which are being coordinated by the FCT Organized Labour resulted from the refusal of  the authorities to address the workers demands since their strike action began  in March, 2025.

Beneficiaries Of Rivers Crisis Unhappy With Peace Initiatives – Wike

Nyesom Wike, FCT Minister

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, on Thursday, June 3, 2025, said the recently brokered peace deal between him and his political godson, suspended Governor Similanayi Fubara, is not being well received by those he described as crisis merchants.

This is as he insisted on not revealing the cost of the peace agreement brokered by President Bola Tinubu to end the  political crisis that   engulfed the State since late 2023 .

At a media interactive session in Abuja, Wike informed that while the disagreement lasted, many transactional actors turned the situation in to an “oil well” from where they drew considerable financial and other benefits.

According to him, such individuals are now ruing their losses with the new peace initiatives in place. He alleged that those hitherto profiting from the impasse are now trying to find a way of either truncating the new found peace or create  another round of crisis.

Wike pointedly, accused the enemies of peace in the State of weaving all kinds of tales about the terms and conditions of the peace agreement between him and Governor Fubara .

The Source reports that speculations have been rife about the unfavourable nature of the peace agreement to the suspended Governor, particularly the insinuation that   part of the deal was for him not to seek a second term in office.

Instructively, while addressing some of his supporters a few days after the peace initiative, Governor Fubara had admitted the difficult nature of the peace agreement.

He, however, maintained that no sacrifices will be too much in the efforts to return peace to the State.

Despite the plethora of conjectures being spewed by some people about the peace agreement. Wike, however, said he will not be stampeded into making public details of the peace initiative.

” I don’t think I owe any explanation to anybody concerning the terms and conditions of the peace agreement among all the parties in the Rivers State crisis.

“The most important thing is that peace has returned to the State. I know that some people who were benefitting from the disagreement are not happy.

“After igniting the crisis, they turn Rivers state into an oil well ,.So ,most of those who instigated the problem are looking for ways to sabotage any peace efforts so that they will continue to exploit the State”, Wike noted.

“Are Atiku and Peter Obi Stronger Than Me”? – Wike

Nyesom Wike - FCT Minister
Nyesom Wike.

By Ayodele Oni

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, (FCT) Nyesom Wike, has mocked leaders of the Opposition Coalition and  described them as spent forces.

The FCT Minister downplayed the recent alliance of opposition figures under the African Democratic Congress (ADC). He dismissed them as a bunch of recycled politicians with no track record of positive impact.

Speaking during a media parley in Abuja on Thursday, Wike threw a dart at former Senate President, David Mark, former Governor Aminu Tambuwal, and other prominent opposition leaders. He said they had held power in the past, but failed to improve the country’s fortunes.

Wike: “David Mark says Nigerians are angry and ADC wants to rescue them—wasn’t he Senate President for years? Tambuwal was governor—were Nigerians happy then?”

He also accused former Attorney General, Abubakar Malami, of overseeing corruption during his tenure and questioned the political strength of opposition leaders.

Asked if he was fazed by the composition of Former Vice president and PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar and former Labour Party Presidential Candidate in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, Wike said: “Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, are they stronger than me?” he quipped.

On whether he would back President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid or support the PDP in 2027, Wike offered a cryptic reply: “Who did I support in 2023? When we get to the bridge, we’ll cross it.

OPINION: Danger of the Single Story (DSS)

Mr Azu Ishiekwene

By Azu Ishiekwene

There’s a part of my job that can swallow you whole. Journalists are brought up on a diet whose main ingredients are a deliberate blend of crime, sex, and money. Everything else is a side dish. That’s why if you follow what you read daily in the newspapers, on the radio or TV or any of the online extensions of the media, you sometimes think the world is going to hell in a handcart.

From the shocking reports of killings in Benue and Plateau States to stories of kidnapping for ransom, banditry, and other minor forms of criminality, there seems to be no relief from bad news. And from the war in Ukraine to the devastation in the Middle East and the Persian Gulf, the news is no less depressing.

Bad news is good news?

Either out of habit or an oversupply of bad news by politicians and their cousins in business, news reports by journalists have never been more toxic, more hopeless.

Chaos in Nigeria’s main opposition party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Labour Party (LP) in disarray. Factions in the Social Democratic Party (SDP) are at daggers drawn. A daylight coup topples the chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Plans to form a coalition party heading for a brick wall.

When you think there’s light in the tunnel of bad news, you find that it’s the light of an oncoming cargo train loaded with more crime, more sex, more money, more chaos.

The other side

Switching off or stepping outside our comfort zone now and then can be beneficial therapy. I’ve been in three states recently that are mainly in the news for the wrong reasons. Delta, Enugu and Zamfara have been in the news for bitter, rancorous politics, banditry, and criminality. From the outside looking in through the news lens, you will be forgiven for thinking these states are done for. Yet, my visit to each of them was a pleasant surprise, a teachable moment in the perils of the single story.

Though each state has its priorities, they, like all other states, are grappling with the challenge of making government work for citizens by creating opportunities, reducing poverty, and being more accountable.

There’s still a long way to go, but what I saw during my limited time in these three states, summarised by my journey to the North West state of Zamfara (pop. 6.5m) – the most frightening of them all – suggests that there might be hope.

Going to Gusau

The first time I received the invitation to visit the state capital, Gusau, I deflected. I needed to think through it, especially in light of a torrent of bad news about Ado Aliero and his violent band of terrorists in the region.

Then the invitation was renewed. There was some comfort in the group that I was to travel with for the first live media chat with Governor Dauda Lawal on his half-term – Gbenga Aruleba (AIT), Reuben Abati (ARISE TV), formidably backed up by his wife, Kiki, Ahmed Shekarau (Media TRUST), Onuoha Ukeh (SUN), and Babajide Otitoju, later replaced by Olajumoke Olatunji (TVC). You couldn’t wish for a more solid panel.

ChatGPT and Gusau

But there was a problem. How do we get to Gusau, knowing what we know,I asked ChatGPT.Response: Don’t go except it’s essential.

It flagged travel advisories by the UK Foreign Office, Australia, Canada, and the US with dire warnings against travelling because of violence, banditry and kidnapping, saying, “The overwhelming consensus from travel authorities is not to recommend travelling to Zamfara State, unless absolutely required.”

The Zaria-Zamfara highway, especially the Funtua (in Katsina), Tsafe, Maru-Dansadau stretch, was described as deadly, the playground of Dogo Gide and Bello Turji, whose gang killed at least 20 travellers, according to an AP report in April this year. I was on my own, but determined to travel.

Death and resurrection

I died and rose many times during the two-hour fifteen-minute trip, consumed by fear and sustained by a lingering sense of adventure that dying at 60 is not dying too young. Unknown to me, my wife had sneaked a rosary into my bag, with a small bottle of anointing oil.

Since I didn’t notice until I cleaned my bag after returning from the trip, she can claim some credit for the protection charm. I was alert the whole of the 450 km road trip from Abuja, wracked by anxiety. It might have been better if she had also provided a sleeping talisman.

To my surprise, the highway between Zaria and Katsina was double-lane and well paved, narrowing as we entered Katsina, and opening up again in long stretches of vast plain fields with enchanting rocks and low hills on both sides. The Abuja-Kaduna highway is a disgrace compared to this one, and yet, the Abuja-Kaduna highway, a shambles, to put it mildly, is the main gateway to the North West.

Valley of the shadow…

After Zaria, occasionally, we passed towns, the busiest and perhaps most prominent of which was Funtua, the home of some of Nigeria’s most influential politicians, including the late Malam Ismail Funtua, and the businessman, Umaru Mutallab.

All was quiet, and I couldn’t help but ask myself if folks in the settlements with clay-walled fences and houses in the small towns we passed through knew what was said of them in the media. As we entered Tsafe, the hometown of one of the most notorious bandits, who got a red carpet reception in Katsina before our visit, every hair on my skin was on edge.

Even though police escorts accompanied us and there were several military checkpoints along the way, as we entered Tsafe, 48km to Gusau, you could slice the fear inside our bus. There was not a murmur.

After Tsafe, I thought the worst was over, at least for the first part of this journey.I felt both relieved and confused as we entered Gusau. Relieved that we had arrived safely, and confused because the paved, nearly finished double-lane road leading into the capital conflicted with my perception of Zamfara as a lost cause. The streets were clean, with a sense of renewal.

Making change happen

I would later see similar scenes in Enugu, where I had not been since 2006 (when Chimaroke Nnamani was governor). My previous visit to Zamfara was in the early 1990s, when it was still a part of Sokoto State. After one military administrator and four civilian governors, before Dauda, the fifth, Zamfara has been something like Kowa, the fictional state in Kannywood’s political thriller “War”, where politicians treat state resources, including its people, as pawns in a game of power.

Dauda may yet make the difference. In two years, he has upgraded the consulting clinic in Gusau to a teaching hospital with some of the most modern facilities, significantly improved access to drinking water, and cleared the backlog of students’ WAEC and NECO fees, which left the state at the bottom of the results table for years. It’s also building a new airport that may be open before September.

The government said it has cleared arrears of gratuities and pensions for local and state government officials owed since 2011, estimated at N13.6 billion, apart from settling a four-month salary arrears it inherited and raising the minimum wage from N7,000 monthly to N70,000.

“Nightlife”

When the live interview panel anchored by Abati asked Dauda how he got the state on a promising footing, including giving it its first traffic light since it was created 29 years ago, the governor said it was mainly by blocking leakages using technology, and prioritisinghuman resource development and capacity building. He said technology has also been deployed to gather and use intelligence to make the state safer, vowing that there would be no negotiations with bandits and criminals.

“Nightlife is back,” Dauda said. I could not find out before returning to Abuja by road in another uneventful journey two days later.

If nightlife is back in Gusau and day-lifers outside Gusau in this mainly agrarian state can gradually return to their farms, that is another lens through which one may view a state defined for nearly three decades by religious extremism, graft and banditry.

Agbaje and London Stock Exchange

Guaranty Trust Holding Company, GTHC, has become the first Nigerian commercial bank to be listed on the London Stock Exchange, LSE. This followed the Holdco’s decision to raise $100 million through ordinary shares on the exchange, according to a statement filed with the Nigerian Exchange, NGX on Thursday.

The offering, according to the statement, will commence on July 2 and expected to close on July 31, 2025. the company said  admission of the ordinary shares to the LSE is scheduled for 8:00 a.m. on July 9, 2025.

According to the financial service company, whatever is raised from the offering will be used to support its N500 billion recapitalisation of its banking arm, GTBank.

“The net proceeds of this offering will be used primarily for the further recapitalisation of GTBank Nigeria and are intended to be deployed in accordance with GTCO’s growth strategy,” the company said. .

Instructively,  GTCO disclosed that it has applied to cancel the listing of its GDRs on the FCA’s Official List and the LSE Main Market. The company, will instead, list its ordinary shares directly on the LSE under the ticker symbol “GTHC”, which will later be changed to “GTCO” following the cancellation of the GDRs by July 31, 2025.

Segun Agbaje, the Chief Executive Officer of the Holdco in his reaction said the offering is a defining moment in the company’s plan to become Africa’s financial powerhouse.

Agbaje: “This offering and transition to a full listing on the Official List of the FCA and to trading of the company’s shares on the London Stock Exchange’s main market for listed securities represents a pivotal moment in GTCO’s growth story, reinforcing our position as a forward-thinking African financial services institution.

“By enhancing our global visibility and access to capital, we are not just advancing our own ambitions but also unlocking transformative opportunities across the markets and customer segments we serve.”

Financial service experts insist that the move will strengthen GTCO’s plan to beat the Central bank of Nigeria, CBN March 31, 2026 recapitalisation deadline for Nigerian banks.

IPOB Disowns Criminality In South East

The leadership of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) under the control of Nnamdi Kanu has warned those causing troubles in the South East Region of the country in the name of Biafra agitation to stop or incur the wrath of law.

IPOB warned that anyone, groups, or individuals, whether self-acclaimed commanders, agitators or enforcers directly or indirectly attempting to exploit the agitation for self determination to foment violence, commit atrocities or destabilize homeland under any guise would be severely dealt with.

A statement by Emma Powerful, Spokesperson/Media and Publicity Secretary for IPOB warned that there was no more room for any form of criminality and violence in Igbo land.

“In recent weeks, we have observed with grave concern, a disturbing escalation of insecurity in parts of the South-East and South South, including kidnappings in Enugu and Imo States, gruesome killings of civilians and security agents in Abia and Anambra and the indiscriminate extortion of traders and commuters in Ebonyi State.

“These heinous acts, carried out by both state and non-state actors, are completely antithetical to the ideals and philosophy of IPOB.

“Let it be known to all and sundry that neither Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu nor the leadership structure of IPOB, from the Directorate of State (DOS) to the last unit coordinator across the globe, has sanctioned any form of disturbance, violence, or criminal operation in Biafra land.

“Our leader has consistently called for total calm, restraint and strategic focus as we approach the decisive conclusion of his ongoing legal battle.

“We reiterate in the clearest terms possible that IPOB is not, and has never been, a violent organization.

“Our strategy for the peaceful and lawful restoration of Biafra is anchored on legal instruments, diplomatic engagement, referenda and mass mobilization and not bloodshed, criminality or coercion.

“Those who carry out kidnappings, assassinations, arson, or extortion in the name of Biafra are not part of IPOB.

“They are enemies of our people, enemies of the Biafra restoration project. Let no criminal hide behind the revered name of IPOB to commit evil.

“Let no cultist, bandit, political thug, or state-sponsored killer parade as a freedom fighter. IPOB has zero tolerance for criminality.

“To be clear, anybody enforcing sit-at-home orders without IPOB authorization is not one of us. Anybody who abducts or kills innocent civilians, security agents, or traditional rulers is not one of us.

“Anybody intimidating traders, commuters, or students in the name of Biafra is a saboteur, not a patriot.

“We have also taken note of state-induced violence and black operations designed to implicate IPOB, especially in areas where government agents stage attacks or deploy counter-insurgency forces to terrorize civilians.

“These tactics have been used repeatedly to demonize our movement and justify the continued detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in defiance of court orders and international law.

“We must not fall for these traps. We must remain vigilant, focused, and grounded in truth. IPOB was established to protect our people, not to endanger them.

“The oath we swore is to defend Biafra land and its people and not to destroy lives or disrupt economic activities.

“Let this message echo in every village, town, and diaspora unit. IPOB is a disciplined movement. We do not kill. We do not kidnap. We do not burn our communities. We do not operate in secrecy. We do not compel obedience through terror.

“Those perpetrating violence in our name are either government operatives in disguise or misguided elements who will be exposed, disowned, and decisively dealt with.

“This is a critical moment in our journey to freedom. We urge all IPOB family members, supporters and well-meaning Biafrans to remain peaceful, law-abiding, and unwavering in their loyalty to Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

“Let us not sabotage our own struggle by allowing criminals and enemies to infiltrate our ranks.

“Any act of violence from this point forward will be treated as a betrayal of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and a direct sabotage of the Biafran cause.

“We are IPOB. We are peaceful. We are focused. We are righteous. And we are unstoppable because our mandate is divine and our cause is just.”

Ekiti State Government has revealed that the U.S. African Development Foundation, has collaborated with the State with a grant of one million Dollars grant to support 10 agricultural cooperatives in the state.

Among the beneficiaries is Ode-Ekiti Cooperative which is already producing locally milled rice as part of the initiative’s success stories.

The Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development, Mr Akintunde Oyebode, who who revealed this to journalists in Ado Ekiti said that the state is stepping up efforts to support small businesses and grow the local economy through targeted financial interventions.

The commissioner revealed that the state government is finalizing plans to launch a billion naira Cooperative Fund aimed at providing affordable financing to cooperative societies and small-scale entrepreneurs across the state.

According to Mr Oyebode, the fund will complement existing partnerships with financial institutions like Bosak Microfinance Bank and Access Bank, which are already supporting business owners and women entrepreneurs in various parts of Ekiti.

“Our job as a government is to support those creating value,” As businesses grow, they will employ more people, increase productivity and as well generate more revenue into government coffers”

On infrastructure, the Commissioner confirmed that over ₦193 billion has been invested by the present administration in key projects, including road construction, healthcare, public school upgrades, and land clearing for agriculture all geared toward improving the ease of doing business.

“When roads are accessible, transportation becomes cheaper, and goods move faster, that’s how economies grow,” he explained.

LP Directs Obi To Resign Within 48hrs After He Joined ADC

0
Peter Obi US Lecture

The Julius Abure- led Labour Party has directed Peter Obi, its 2023 Presidential candidate to resign from the party within 48 hours.

The ultimatum comes on the heels of Wednesday’s meeting by key opposition leaders in the country to adopt the African Democratic Congress, ADC, as the platform to contest the 2027 election , to oust the ruling APC and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from office.

The magazine reported that Obi was among the aggrieved opposition leaders who held a meeting in Abuja, the nation’s capital on Wednesday, where they declared ADC as the coalition platform to defeat President Tinubu in the next election.

Other coalition leaders who gathered in the nation’s capital yesterday for the historic event,  included former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former governors, Nasir El Rufai, Rauf Aregbesola, Rotimi Amaechi, amongst others.

There are suggestion that Obi is planning to realise his presidential ambition in the new party due to the leadership crisis that have rocked LP for mounts, with two factions in the party struggling intensely to control its soul.

Obi is backing a faction of the party led by Nenadi Usman, a former Minister of Finance and Senator of the Federal Republic.

The former presidential candidate had earlier in the week disclosed that he was willing to spend one term in office if he gets the coalition ticket to run for Nigeria’s presidency in 2027.

In his first reaction after attending the ADC meeting, the former Anambra state governor said the ADC will put Nigerians ”first” .

According to the Abure-led LP , Obi should be bold enough to leave the party now that he has decided to join the ADC, a party it said its leaders were the ones who mismanaged the country for many years.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Iloh in a statement issued on Thursday, also described Obi and other coalition leader as power whose only interest is personal aggrandizement, adding that the party is aware that Obi has been having meetings with other opposition leaders in the country, and has been trying to lure some LP members to join him in the coalition.PA

Part of the statement: “We are aware of several nocturnal meetings between Peter Obi and some of our members, lobbying them to join him in his new party. We’re also aware that a number of them have refused to defect with him.

“Labour Party has consistently said it is not part of the coalition and therefore, any of our members who is part of the coalition are given within 48 hours to formally resign his membership of the party.

“Labour Party is not available for people with a dual agenda, people with a deceptive persona. The party will not avail itself to individuals who have one leg in one Party and another leg elsewhere. People that in the morning, they will claim to be in the Labour Party and in the evening they are in coalition.

“Nearly 70 percent of Nigerian population are youths who are tired of the old order, tired of gerontocrats deciding their fate. The new Nigeria that the youths are dreaming of, is not what can be realized from what we are seeing in the coalition.

“These people are opportunistic politicians who are only interested in relaunching themselves into circle of power, people who are desperate to continue holding on to power.

“The new Nigeria of our dreams can only be realised through the Labour Party and the party is willing to lead Nigerians along that trajectory.”
