The Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN) has announced plans to establish a University in furtherance of the association’s educational programme.

The organization’s National Amirah, Mrs. Rafiah Idowu Sanni, disclosed this on Wednesday in Kaduna during a press conference to usher in its 40th-anniversary celebrations and an international conference.

She announced that the passion for education is driving the new projects, including a School of Nursing in Ibadan by the Oyo State chapter and ongoing plans for a FOMWAN University.

The press conference primarily outlined plans for FOMWAN’s International Conference with the theme: “Empowering Muslim Women: Climate Resilience, Sustainability, and Community Development – Celebrating FOMWAN’s Achievements.”

Mrs. Sanni explained that the theme reflects FOMWAN’s commitment to equipping women to meet future challenges by combining Islamic values with practical solutions to safeguard the environment and ensure inclusive development.

Celebrating four decades of work, the National Amirah highlighted FOMWAN’s foundational pillars, which include Da’awah (propagation of Islam), Education, Community Development, Healthcare Initiatives, and Capacity Building.

The conference, which begins its formal opening on Thursday, is expected to host delegates from the UK, the US, and various African nations to strengthen unity and foster global collaboration.

FOMWAN, the umbrella body for Muslim Women’s Organisations in Nigeria founded in 1985, is active in all 36 states and the FCT, with a presence in over 700 Local Government Areas.

It serves as a unified voice on matters concerning women, children, and their communities.

On the international scene, FOMWAN  condemned the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, labelling it a “genocide” and called for global solidarity to end the bloodshed.

It particularly frowned at the “indiscriminate killings of women, children, and journalists, acts which violate every standard of humanity and international law.”

LASG Replies ‘Peller’: You Must Pay Tax

The Lagos State Government, LASG , has responded to a remark by popular social media entertainer, Habeeb Hamzat popular as  Peller, to the effect that the state government is demanding N36 million tax from him.

Reacting to the report, the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu on Tax and Revenue, Abdulkabir Ogungbo, said anyone with legitimate income in the state must ensure that he/she pays tax to the state government.

Recall that Peller had during a live stream with singer Tobechukwu Okoh aka Peruzzi, accused the state government of demanding the sum from him, saying it was to high for him to pay.

“The task force said I should pay N36m in tax. I swear to Almighty Allah, I don’t have anything. I only came into the limelight last year. Are you, Peruzzi, even paying tax, and how much is it? Why should I pay N36m? What does that even mean?” Peller lamented.

Speaking to Punch on the issue, Ogungbo said it within the state government powers to collect tax from anyone making legitimate earnings in the state.

“I need to take a look at this particular context in question. But generally, the LIRS is an autonomous body saddled with the responsibility of assessing and giving the best judgment on behalf of the government. We may need to engage the LIRS as an office to know about this particular case. But within the context of personal income, anybody who is legitimately earning, Section 24 of the Nigerian Constitution stipulates that when you earn your living and income legitimately, you are meant to declare that honestly to the authorities. So the context around the size, the quantum and what have you, needs to be properly investigated and we can revert,” he said.

When quizzed on taxation for content creators, the SA explained that there are new reforms guiding digital assets and virtual transactions.

Ogungbo said, “Naturally, the law allows for personal income tax, meaning that when you earn a living or earn anything from what you do legitimately, you are supposed to pay tax. So from that context, irrespective of the location, either virtually or physically, you’re meant to remit your tax to the approved authority, which is the LIRS. But from the context of around digital assets and their complementary vocations, which mainly talk about this virtual transaction, the new reforms take care of that. But as it relates to personal income tax, irrespective, you’re meant to pay tax.”

He added, “So it’s about the legitimacy of your residence, where you stay. When you stay here, we assume that your infrastructure usage and otherwise, you earn it. You can be here and be having online business, so for that reason, if you earn honestly here, and there is no proof that you pay the same tax to another jurisdiction, for instance, maybe you’re based outside the country, you have to prove to the authority here that you were paying to the other state or other national. But if your income, which you earn here virtually or online and you stay here, and you want to do something with the Lagos State Government, then you’re bound to remit your tax here.

“But I do not have this particular case on my table for me to determine. Because we have a body (the LIRS) that is autonomous and that is very efficient in what they do. So Let me investigate and revert to you.”

This is not the first time the state government has clashed with popular entertainers on the issue. In 2023, popular Nollywood actress, Iyabo Ojo had declined to pay the state government over N18 million demanded form her for tax.

Insisting that she was ready to be arrested Ojo had described the demand as outrageous, saying her income was not as huge as people may have thought.

“Make i go thief ni? I ask again, “How do you (sic) people come up with such outrageous bills,” Ojo queried.

“I don’t know how much you think I get paid. Hence, your team will come up with this conclusion.”

“I have single-handedly raised my kids and so many others, plus myself without a single help from the government. Yet you feel so entitled to reap over 100 per cent from where you did not sow.”

“Nothing is working right in this country, but yet you feel the need to take from where you have not sown.”

Assault On NYSC Member: Soludo Must Prosecute Vigilante Operatives- NBA

Brutalization Of Female Corps Member By Anambra Vigilante

The Nigerian Bar Association ,NBA, has called for the arrest and prosecution of vigilantes operatives in Anambra state involved in the assault on a member of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Jennifer Elobor.

The NBA in a statement by its President, Afam Osigwe, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, urged the state government to ensure that the operatives were seriously sanctioned for attacking the NYSC member.

The development followed a viral video, on Tuesday, showing the state vigilante operatives attacking Miss Elobor and other corps members, at the Corpers Lodge where they were resident, after they were allegedly accused of being internet fraudsters.

Elobor was beaten and stripped naked by security operatives, while being arrested by the opeartives, an action that attracted serious condemnations from not a few Nigerians, including Peter Obi, the 2023 Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, LP, who said he was ashamed and heartbroken over the cruel act melted on Elobor by the state’s vigilante operatives.

Reacting, NBA said the action of the operatives was in violation of the fundamental human rights of the corper, an “inhumane and degrading” treatment that should not be condoned in any descent society, adding that the arrest should have been done in a more civilised manner even if Elobor was found to have committed the alleged offence.

The NBA however applauded the state government for acting swiftly by arresting the operatives involved, noting that their prosecution must be made public to ensure that justice is not only done, but seen to have been done by Nigerians.

It has therefore directed the Anambra state chapter of the NYSC to follow up on the issue to ensure that the victims get justice, and those found to have violated their rights be made accountable for their actions.

Part of the statement: “Nobody, whether suspected of an offence or entirely innocent, deserves to be subjected to such barbaric treatment,

“Even where an arrest is to be made, the law provides clear procedures to ensure that the dignity of the individual is protected,

“Justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done, to serve as redress for Ms. Elobor and a deterrent against similar abuses in the future.

Meanwhile, the magazine reports that the Charles Soludo-led administration in the state has suspended the operatives involved in the attack, and has commenced full investigation.

Obi while reacting via his verified X handle, said he was seriously disturbed by the vigilante act of wickedness and savagery.

“I strongly condemn this act of wickedness and savagery. No society should ever tolerate the abuse, humiliation, and dehumanisation of its citizens — least of all the vulnerable and women. What happened is not only a violation of law and morality, but also a direct assault on our collective humanity. That young girl could have been anyone’s daughter, sister, or even mine,” Obi stated.

Calling for urgent action, Obi urged the authorities to ensure that those responsible are apprehended, prosecuted, and made examples to deter future acts of barbarism. He further appealed for stronger safeguards and communal values to protect the vulnerable and uphold human dignity.

“We must awaken our conscience and work collectively to build a society where justice is swift, compassion is active, and the dignity of every human being – especially the young and vulnerable – is inviolable,” he said, stressing that “our humanity must always come first. Without it, we are nothing but a people adrift in cruelty.”

“Terrorism Thrive When Those Arrested Are Recycled Back Into Society  Without Accountability” – Obi

By Charles Igbo

Mr Peter Obi, Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 Election has praised Nigeria’s Security Agencies for the arrest of two Al Qaeda terrorists who have been on international wanted list.

National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu broke the heartwarming news of the arrest of both men Mahmud Muhammadu  Usman and Nahmud al- Nigeri, in a delicate coordinated operation by Nigeria’s Security Agencies.

While commending the feat, Obi, pointed out that arresting criminals and recycling them back into the society is a dangerous exercise.

He said: “However, beyond arrests, we must remain vigilant. Terrorism and violent criminality thrive when justice is not served, when those arrested are recycled back into society without accountability.”

The Nigerian Government had been accused of approving the enlistment of  purported repented terrorists  into the Nigerian Army.  But it is an allegation that  both the Federal Government and the leadership of the Army vehemently denied.

But in a post on his X page later, Obi acknowledged the gallantry of Security Agents and urged the Government should eqiup them better, and train them better, and motivate them better.

Following is the post.

“Sustaining the Gains Against Terrorism and Banditry

I commend the Nigerian Security Agencies for their recent achievements in the fight against terrorism, kidnapping  and banditry. This is indeed a remarkable feat and a step in the right direction in our collective struggle against insecurity and in restoring peace to our dear country.

“Our gallant officers and men in uniform have shown courage often under very difficult conditions. Their sacrifices remind us that Nigeria can – and must – be safe for all citizens. I salute their professionalism and urge that they be better equipped, trained and motivated to sustain their gains.

“Let this victory remind us that security is the foundation of every meaningful development. A secure Nigeria is possible, and together, we must support our security agencies with the right leadership, resources, and political will to end the reign of terror in our land.

A new Nigeria is Possible.

Late Chief Tony Anenih’s Son, Ose, Resigns From PDP

By Adesina Soyooye

Ose Anenih, son of one of the founding fathers of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, late Chief Tony Anenih, has resigned from the Party which earned his father the alias: Mr. Fix it.

Ose quit the party in a letter he addressed to the Chairman of his Arue Ward 3, Uromi, Edo State, dated August 18, 2025.

In the letter, he said his decision to resign was not made lightly. He, however, said he would remain engaged in civic and intellectual discourse to help strengthen good governance and improve the lives of the people.

His words: “At this point in my life, my duty now lies first with my family and with other responsibilities that demand my full attention. However, my commitment to Nigeria’s progress remains unshaken.”

Given the state of the PDP in Edo State since it lost the Governorship election to the All Progressives Congress, APC, it is not quite surprising that Anenih jnr. resigned from the Party, especially after his public altercation with another chieftain of the Party, former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido over the role his father, Anenih snr, played, or dud not play in the abortion of the June 12, 1993 Presidential Election won by late Chief Moshood Abiola but sadly canceled by the then Military Regime headed by General Ibrahim Babangida.

Anenih Snr. was the National Chairman of  the Social Democratic Party, SDP, the Party under which Abiola contested for the Presidential seat.

APC Suspends Gbenga Daniel As Its Member

Otunba Gbenga Daniel

By Adesina Soyooye

Gbenga Daniel, a serving Senator, and two-term Governor of Ogun State, has been suspended by the Ogun State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

The State Working Committee of the Party, according to its Chairman, Chief Yemi Sanusi, endorsed the indefinite suspension of the Senator, as earlier recommended and done by his Ward, because he refused to appear before a Disciplinary Committee investigating him for alleged anti-party activities.

The report of the Disciplinary Committee set up by his Ward 4, Sagamu, indicted him. Since he was absent, the Ward said it relied on alleged documentary evidence and  witnesses to his anti-party activities.

Suspended along with Daniel is Honourable Kunle Folarin of Ward 6, Sagamu. Same allegation of anti-party activities was leveled against him, and he too ignored the Disciplinary Committee set up to investigate him.

Endorsing the recommendation of the Committe for the indefinite suspension placed on both men, the SWC said it did so to preserve discipline in the party as well as its integrity.

However, not a few people insist that Daniel’s suspension is as a result of his very untidy relationship with the State Governor, Prince Dapo  Abiodun. The two men have been entangled in a political squabble which upped a few days ago when the State Government gave an order for the demolition of Daniel’s properties   – his residence and hotel. He was forced to quickly secure a Court order which has temporarily halted the demolition order.

Opinion, however, is strong that the suspension of Daniel and Folarin is likely to be quashed by the APC National Headquarters.

Daniel was a two-term Governor of the State under the PDP. In 2019, he was the Director General of the Presidential Campaign of  PDP’s Candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

On Atiku’s loss to the now late President Muhammadu Buhari, Daniel shocked both the PDP and Atiku by defecting to the APC.

Obi Says He Is Ashamed, Heartbroken, Over Inhumane Treatment Of Female Corper In Anambra

Former Governor of  Anambra State and Labour Party Presidential Candidate in the 2023 Presidential Election, Mr. Peter Obi, has condemned, in strong terms, the inhumane treatment meted out to a young lady in Anambra State, describing it as “wickedness and savagery” that has no place in a civilised society.

Reacting via his verified X handle, Obi said he read the report on newsexpressngr.com with deep concern and was left ashamed and heartbroken that such cruelty could happen in 2025.

“Why I Am School  Drop-Out, Have No University Degree” – Billionaire Femi Otedola

0
Femi Otedola

By Adesina Soyooye

Femi Otedola, billionaire, serial entrepreneur, son of a former Governor of Lagos State, doting father of very educated and successful children, has revealed he is a school drop-up.

He disclosed that he did not see the four walls of any tertiary institution and that he struggled through Primary school, managed to go through secondary school after failures in subjects which forced his parents to change his school, and finally called it quits at Lower six.

From the beginning, he said he knew he was not cut out for formal education, academics, and decided to focus on business at an early age to the anger, embarrassment and bewilderment of his parents, especially, his mother.

Otedelo, 62, told his unbelievable story, considering what a success he has made of himself in all spheres of life, including oil, gas and banking, in his 286-page Memoir, Making It Big

Otedola: “My parents enrolled me at the University of Lagos Staff School in 1968, at the age of six.

“Kola Abiola, the first son of Chief Moshood Abiola, the future business magnate and Presidential Candidate who was at the time an accountant, sat beside me in class.

“But there was something about academia and me; we were not compatible. I finished primary school in 1974 because I repeated a class. Even when I was allowed to pass, I consistently anchored the bottom rungs of our end-of-term examination results. My interests were definitely not in academia.”

When he managed to scrape through Primary School, his parents enrolled  him at the Methodist Boys’ High School, Lagos. But things were still same. He struggled all the way.

Otedola: “The school had been founded almost a hundred years earlier, in 1878. Alumni include grand names in Nigerian history: Benjamin Nnamdi Azikiwe, Mobolaji Johnson, Ola Rotimi, Fola Adeola, Olusegun Osoba and Hezekiah Oladipo Davies.

“When I joined the student body in 1974, the principal was D. A. Famoroti, who’d taken up the post in 1963 and would leave in 1980.

“I started Form 1 at age 12 and was there for three years.

When his performance in school remained zero, his parents transferred him to Olivet Baptist High School, Oyo, a boarding school founded by Southern Baptist missionaries in 1945.

“My parents’  thinking was that all my siblings were boarders, and they seemed to be doing well. They thought this change would help turn around my attitude towards academia, but nothing changed.

“I started in Form 3 at Olivet, and as I rounded off the first year of my A Levels, my father was establishing his printing company, Impact Press, in Surulere, a residential and commercial district in Lagos State.

“I grew fascinated with the machines and told myself that my future would be inextricably tied to them. I managed to remain in school until the Lower Sixth examination was over. And then, I was finished; I never returned for my Upper Sixth.

“All I wanted to do was get involved in business. My father kept watch over me and drew me close. My sister taught me shorthand. I knew how to type and began typing letters for my dad. I prepared all his business correspondence.

“I was fascinated by the way printing machines treat paper. The white paper is placed on one end, the ink and plates are fixed, and the printed material comes out of the other end. It was captivating.”

Inspite of his mother’s protests, Otedola  abandoned school to work full-time in his father’s printing business. His rose to  become the Managing director of Impact Press in 1987 at the age of 25.

“However, I soon became restless. I had immersed myself in all aspects of the business and learned the ropes at my dad’s right hand. I certainly enjoyed the job more than grappling with the Pythagoras theorem and struggling through homework at Olivet.

“As time went by, though, I also thought it was time for a measure of independence from my dad.

“I still wanted to work for him. I really enjoyed hearing the rumbling of machines and savouring the smell of freshly printed material,  but I also wanted to do things differently.

“I told him I wanted to become a sales consultant for the press, and he agreed. He said he would pay me a commission of 10–15% on any work I brought in.

“That was a significant break for me. I invested my money in buying cars for sales and marketing outreach and moved on to the next phase in my nascent professional life”

Inspiring. Now, the boy who struggled through Primary and Secondary schools, and  shunned University, is a Billionaire, moves in highest circles, and is Chancellor of at least, two Universities.
