Tobi Amusan Wins Silver

World Record holder, Tobi Amusan, in the 110 Meter Hurdles, has once again made the nation proud. She won a Silver medal in the final of the Women 100m Hurdles at the ongoing World Athletic Championship in Tokyo, Japan, Monday.

The final which was highly competitive, saw Amusan coasting home in an impressive time of 12.29 seconds behind the winner, Diraji Kambundji of Switzerland, who clocked 12.24 to win the gold medal.

Grace Stark of the United States of America won the Bronze medal in a time of 12.34s while Masai Russell finished 4th in 12.44s.

Amusan had made her intention known earlier in the heat and also in her second semi final heat.

She coasted home in 12.36sec to win and qualify for the final.

With her Silver Medal, she remains the only Nigerian athlete at the ongoing Championship to win a medal for the country so far.

It would be recalled that at the last World Athletics Championship in Budapest, Hungary, Nigeria failed to win a medal.

Amusan’s ‘golden’ Silver in Tokyo at the ongoing Championship has surpassed the previous edition in Budapest.

The Silver medal she won has banished the memory of the last Olympics where she failed to reach the final of the event.

Death Of Patients On Life-support: Kano Electricity Company Replies Teaching Hospital

Kano Electricity Distribution Company

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Management of Kano Electricity Distribution Company, KEDCO, has strongly rejected claims suggesting that  its activities precipitated the  death of some patients on critical life-support at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, AKTH,  Kano .

The Management of the AKTH had, on Sunday, September, 14, 2025, blamed the death of some patients on life-support equipment on the decision of KEDCO to cut off power supply to the tertiary health institution.

A statement from the AKTH spokesperson, Hauwa Dutse, expressed serious regret over the death of some patients in critical care after KEDCO abruptly disconnected the hospital from power supply over alleged non-payment of electricity bills.

The Management expressed fears that more could die if KEDCO fails to restore power supply to the institution.

However, reacting on Monday, September 15, 2025, in a statement from its spokesperson Sani Bala Sani, KEDCO described the accusation from AKTH as a failed attempt at blackmailing it.

According to the power distribution outfit, power had already been restored to the AKTH, even before its media outburst.

Debunking allegation of cutting off power supply, the Management of KEDCO attributed the brief power failure at AKTH to an official operation to separate the main hospital campus on Kano/Zaria Road from the staff residential quarters.

“The main campus and health facilities are connected to the top-priority 33kv Zaria Road feeder, enjoying an average of 22 hours of daily supply under Band A services .

“However, AKTH management has continued to insist that staff residential homes remain on the same feeder as the critical hospital facilities .

“This has posed repeated risks to the stability and reliability of the hospital’s dedicated power supply and, several attempts by KEDCO to separate the residential homes from the health facilities were unsuccessful due to the Management’s resistance.

”Unfortunately, this led to a severe fault which caused the recent outage we had consistently sought to prevent.

“To safeguard uninterrupted power supply to the hospital, KEDCO is proceeding with the separation of the two supply lines. This measure is necessary to guarantee reliability, safety and improved quality of service to the hospital”, Sani stated

This is as the power supply company alleged the accumulation of several millions of Naira unpaid electricity bills on the said controversial staff quarters supply lines.

According to Sani, owing to the negative impact, the non-payment of electricity bills  is having on the entire system, the Management, through a letter dated August 12, 2025, and signed by Muhammad Aminu Dantata, KEDCO Chief Commercial Officer, informed about a planned withdrawal of services from the staff quarters, and non-essential units of the hospital.

According to the KEDCO spokesperson, repeated appeals over a reasonable period had failed to change the hospital management’s attitude, as it continued to make partial monthly payments.

“Despite repeated appeals, the hospital continues to make only partial monthly payments. This has resulted in an outstanding electricity liability of N949,880,922.45 as at August 2025.

“The hospital was requested to settle its August 2025 bill of N108,957, 582 .29 in full within ten working days to avoid service withdrawal from affected locations” KEDCO said.

Nigeria’s Bane Remains Pursuance Of Self Interest, Materialism – Anglican Primate Ndukuba

The Most Rev Dr Henry Ndukuba

By Ayodele Oni

The Primate of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Most Rev. Henry Ndukuba, has identified materialism and self-interest as the bane of the nation, and expressed disappointment over the growing erosion of societal values.

The Archbishop stated this during a courtesy visit to the palace of Ewi of Ado-Ekiti, Oba Adeyemo Adejugbe, ahead of a programme in Ado Ekiti.

Archbishop Ndukuba, who explained that society has come to measure people by wealth and status, rather than integrity and service, recalled the wisdom passed down by early missionaries, and that such values are being replaced by greed and selfish leadership.

He noted that many individuals, given opportunities to lead in different spheres of society, often prioritize personal gain over the welfare of the people, urging Nigerians to reconsider their understanding of leadership by returning to God with sincerity of heart.

The Primate sought for the blessings of the Royal Father and promised that the Church would continue to pray and partner with the throne in ensuring that there is stability of peace and harmony in Ekiti.

His words, “We can see that people are so materialistic now, that everything is monetized. People are measured by the amount of wealth they control, the higher position they occupy.

“And even when people are given opportunities to lead in different spheres, many have used such opportunities to seek their own well-being rather than the well-being of the people.

“Therefore, I think that something is wrong somewhere. Our values are being changed not for good, but rather for the worse.

“In such a time as this, we are asking that people need to reconsider their understanding of leadership and their understanding of helping the people. That cannot be in the right perspective except if you turn to God with your heart”.

In his remarks, Oba Adeyemo Adejugbe hailed the impact of the Church in the society, saying the visit to Ekiti is an indication that the state is divinely endorsed by God.

The Monarch, who reiterated his commitment to supporting the church, urged religious bidies to continue to pray for the state and the current political dispensation under the leadership of Governor Biodun Oyebanji, so that the residents can thrive.

There a crack in the Caretaker Committee constituted by the  President of the Nigeria Labour Congress ( NLC), Joe Ajaero in Edo state, as a member of the committee has resigned.

The Chairman of the Edo State branch of textiles and garment union, Ochei Oyenbuchukwu Mike, who was a member, resigned his appointment as a member of the Edo State NLC Caretaker Committee.

The Committee was set up by the National President, Joe Ajaero, on Thursday, 28th August, 2025.

Reports reveal that two other members of the Prof. Monday Igbafen -led Caretaker Committee had earlier shunned the inauguration, describing it as a sham that cannot be trusted to move the Union forward in Edo State.

In a press conference at the state secretariat of the Garment and textile union, Edo state branch, Ochei Oyenbuchukwu Mike explained that he never agreed to be a part of the said Caretaker Committee, but was coerced into it.

According to him, ”I discovered that it was a ploy by some disgruntled elements in the Union to continue to remain in power by proxy which does not mean well for Edo workers”. He noted that he has decided to align with the  Bernard Joman Egwakhide -led executive of NLC in the State.

Ochei further explained that “unionism as a movement is local and therefore cannot betray his people and state to favour a few parochial and short sighted persons in the NLC national leadership to the detriment of progress and better working and living conditions of Edo workers.”

He, however, advised the two remaining members of the Igbafen–led Caretaker Committee to follow his lead by joining Egwakhide in his bid to take Edo NLC to greater heights.

Allow Probe Of Your Eight Years Tenure As Gov. – Northern Youth Group Advises El-Rufai

To prove his innocence, the Northern Youth Frontiers, (NYF), has advised Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, former Governor of Kaduna State, to submit himself to scrutiny over allegations of misappropriation of state funds during his eight years in office.

In a statement, national coordinator of the group, Sama Musa, said true leadership is defined by humility and a willingness to be held accountable.

Musa expressed concern that El-Rufai has resisted attempts by authorities to probe his eight-year administration, warning that such acts undermine democracy and public accountability.

“Public office is a sacred trust, and those who occupy such positions are duty-bound to uphold the highest standards of integrity,” NYF said.

“The citizens of Kaduna state, and indeed all Nigerians, deserve transparency and accountability from their leaders, both during and after their time in office.

“It is disheartening to witness a former governor who once championed the ideals of good governance evade scrutiny when called upon to account for his actions. Such behaviour not only raises questions about his stewardship but also sets a dangerous precedent for future leaders.”

The group said accountability should not be viewed as an act of betrayal, but as a duty owed to the public.

NYF recalled that during his tenure, el-Rufai made “controversial” decisions, including the claim that his private security network was larger than the police force.

The group also criticised El-Rufai’s admission that his administration paid ransoms and provided supplies to bandits, saying the actions endangered communities and weakened public confidence in the state.

“The consequences of his governance choices cannot be swept under the rug; they will demand accountability,” NYF said.

“We urge him to embrace the opportunity to clarify his actions and decisions, as failing to do so only perpetuates a culture of impunity that has plagued our political landscape for far too long.

“By engaging with the scrutiny, he can help restore faith in our political institutions and contribute to a culture of transparency that is vital for the progress of Kaduna state and Nigeria as a whole,” the group added.

The group urged all past and present leaders to embrace responsibility to the public and to recognise that true leadership is characterised by humility and accountability.

Dangote To NUPENG, DAPPMAN: You Will Fail In Your Plan To Frustrate Us

0
Aliko Dangote

Dangote Refinery has accused some stakeholders in the oil and gas sector of the economy of deliberating sponsoring the attack on the company in other to frustrate its plan to distribute fuel produced from the refinery across the country.

First of its kind in the country, Dangote Refinery had initiated the fuel distribution initiative by purchasing 4000 CNG-powered trucks which it said will be based on deliver-and pay later arrangement.

The initiative, the company said, appears not to have the support of some actors in the sector, particularly depot owners and importers who are now trying to frustrate it.

The company raised the allegation in a statement on Sunday questioning the negative reaction of National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, and Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria, DAPPMAN.

Recall that Dangote had accused DAPPMAN of reporting the company to president Bola Ahmed Tinubu for allegedly trying to create a monopoly in the sector by selling petrol and diesel at a low price.

NUPENG on its part had last week embarked on a two-day warring strike, after the union accused Dangote of trying to prevent drivers working for the company from unionizing.

The issue was later resolve amicably by the federal government through the DSS a and the strike was canceled.

The company said the initiative was not meant to stop drivers who work for it from unionization, saying the unions action is self-serving and a plan by some vested interest in the oil and gas sector to kill the initiative.

No matter what the unions do, Dangote said, the company will still go ahead with its plan..

The statement reads: “In January 2022, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) reported that one of DAPPMAN’s members had supplied petrol containing over 15% methanol, well above acceptable limits (Methanol which is not a standard industry practice or procedure for refinery, but blenders use it to prompt up the octane rating to an acceptable level that is well above anti-knocking ratio).

“The result was widespread engine damage for thousands of end users. Yet, no transparent government inquiry or independent investigation was ever conducted to determine the source, intent, or full impact of the adulterated fuel.”

The refinery also described as incorrect, the claim that the price of petrol in Togo is lower than in Nigeria. It revealed that the average pump price in Lomé stands at approximately 680 CFA francs per litre, equivalent to N1, 826.

“This figure reflects the very scenario that DAPPMAN and its affiliates appear to advocate for in Nigeria. The Dangote Refinery has positioned Nigeria as a primary source of affordable petrol feedstock for West Africa, despite the refinery importing over 60% of the crude oil it processes. Remarkably, the refinery is able to offer petrol at prices below the international benchmark within the sub-Saharan region.”

Meanwhile, analysts in the sector insist that the clash between Dangote and importers and depot owners on the issue of fuel pricing, and their fears that Dangote is trying to take them out of business, after investing so much for years before the entrance of the former into the business, will fizzle out with time as they begin to understand each other, and as price starts to stabilize in the sector.

Falana: Tinubu Bowed To World Bank, IMF By Removing Fuel Subsidy

0
Femi Falana - SAN

Rights activist Femi Falana has insisted that the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu was forced by the World Bank and International Monetary Fund, IMF, to withdrawal fuel subsidy, saying the decision was not an economic exigency.

Recall that President Tinubu had on his inauguration on May 29, 2023 announced the removal of petrol subsidy saying “fuel subsidy is gone” amidst controversy that the action will bring untold hardship to Nigerians.

The human rights activist and lawyer made the remark on Sunday on Channels Television programme , Politic Today, saying what the Nigerian government did was an error because no country in the world has  ever removed subsidy totally  on essential commodity such as fuel.

He cited developed countries such as the United states, United Kingdom, France and others where the government have retained subsidies on essential commodities because of their benefits to their people.

According to him, the policy was imposed on the country by the Brenton wood-based financial institutions as a condition for receiving support from them, but not a few Nigerians insist that the removal was not in their interest considering its effect on the economy.

Falana: “There’s no way you can remove subsidies completely; no country in the entire world has abolished subsidies completely.

“Even leading Western countries like the United States, the United Kingdom, France and others subsidise electricity, agriculture and many aspects of people’s lives.

“As a matter of fact, if I must say this, it was the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that insisted that the government must remove all subsidies.”

The magazine reports that many Nigerians have faced untold hardship since the removal almost two years ago, even though the government said the action was in the interest of the country.

For instance, the Tinubu administration contend that the removal of subsidy from fuel has freed -up more funds for the three tiers of government to spend on critical social projects.

Awujale Stool: A Woman Could Be Next ‘King’ As Kingmakers Bar Non-Bloodline From Contest

0
Awujale Oba-Sikiru-Adetona

As the contest for the next  Awujale hots up,  the family of the Fusenguwa Ruling house, which is expected to produce the next traditional ruler for the town has disclosed that aspirants with no direct blood line to the family will not be allowed to contest.

The family however disclosed that women can be considered, in case there are no male contestants from the bloodline who are willing to ascend the throne following the death of Oba Sikiru Adetona who joined his forebears few months ago.

According to Prince Adeleke Adeyemi, the General Secretary of the Fusenguwa Ruling House,, the Awujale throne is heredity and exclusively reserved for the princes from the ruling houses in Ijebu-Ode  and not for everybody.

He explained that the extant Chiefs Law of 1959 makes it clear that those who do not belong to the family are not allowed to contest for the throne, adding that  “female-line descendants may be considered” as contestants in case no male-line are available.

He stressed that the ruling house will make the contest open to all eligible contestant saying the Fusengbuwa family is “large and extensive” adding that the eight families in the Family has been rotating the stool among them for years without rancour, noting that the issue of the next Awujale is more than a contest, but about the promotion of  “Ijebu heritage”.

Adeleke : “The Awujale stool is a hereditary throne and will usually revolve or rotate among persons from the same or common ancestor, in this case, Awujale Fusengbuwa.

“Those who do not belong to the family are totally excluded. Outsiders with no direct blood ties to Fusengbuwa are not eligible to contest for the stool.

“The Chiefs Law of 1959 further states that candidates for the Awujale vacancy must (a) be members of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House, and (b) come from the male line of descent. If no qualified male descendant is available, female-line descendants may be considered. This provision protects the throne’s integrity and ensures its continuity through legitimate bloodlines.

“This rotation of the stool between distinct male lines of the same ruling house is not new. Anikilaya Ruling House produced two Awujales from two different male lines: Awujale Adeleke Ogbagba (1896–1906), and Awujale Ademolu Fesogbade (1916–1925). Also, the Fidipote Ruling House followed the same pattern: Awujale Adeona (1906–1915), and Awujale Ogunnaike (1929–1933). This precedent strongly supports the claims of the male line descendants of Awujale Fusengbuwa.

“It’s common knowledge that the Fusengbuwa Ruling House has eight distinct units. Among them, these two male lines have the primary right to present candidates: Olufadi line – from Olufadekemi, Fusengbuwa’s first Abidagba (meaning child born to a reigning monarch), and Tunwase line – from Fusengbuwa’s younger son, Ali Adesimbo. The other units may only present candidates if there are no qualified candidates from the Olufadi or Tunwase’s lines.

“The royal family is large and extensive and we are all one and continue to welcome all distant relations of the ruling house.

“Traditionally, the first male Abidagba, Olufadi, held seniority within the ruling house. However, when the stool became vacant in 1886, Olufadi had passed away, leaving Tunwase as the only qualified candidate. Tunwase became the 45th Awujale (1886–1895). The Tunwase line also later produced Awujale Oba Theophilus Adenuga Tunwase, the 50th Awujale, in 1925. His reign ended in controversy when he was deposed and exiled to Ilorin in 1929.

“Simultaneously following Tunwase’s outcast, Oduwole Obanlefa Olufadi, a direct descendant of Olufadi, was put forward by the Fusengbuwa Ruling House as rightful successor. On February 15, 1929, he petitioned the colonial administrator, Resident P. A. Talbot, asserting the Olufadi family’s rightful claim to the throne. Though the appeal held undeniable merit, colonial authorities were persuaded by the Fidipote Ruling House’s counter-arguments which asserted the Fusengbuwa house had already taken its turn.

“As a result, Oduwole Obanlefa Olufadi’s legitimate claim was rejected, again depriving the Olufadi male line of their hereditary status. While his petition was rejected, it preserved the family’s claim for future generations. Despite being denied their rightful turn for over a century, many direct descendants of Awujale Fusengbuwa have remained deeply committed to public service and the preservation of Ijebu traditions. For example, Prince Fasasi Adebisi Obanlefa Adeyemi, a fourth-generation descendant of Olufadi male line, served as Olori-Ebi (head) of the ruling house for 25 years (1988–2013).”

The magazine reported that the last Awujale, Oba Adetona died on July 13, 2025 at the ripe age of 91 years.
