Court Rejects Nnamdi Kanu’s Transfer To National Hospital, Orders NMA To Assess Health Status

Nnamdi-Kanu - IPOB Leader

By Akinwale Kasali

“On submission of NMA’s assessment of his health status, the Court would decide whether Kanu is fit to stand trial or not, and whether the DSS has adequate   facilities and personnel to take care of his health issues”

The appeal by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, detained leader of the Indigenous Peoples Of Biafra, IPOB, for a transfer to the National Hospital Abuja over the alleged deterioration of his health seems to have fallen flat – temporarily, for now.

Kanu, who has been in the custody of the Department of State Services, DSS, on the orders of the Court, has been agitating for a transfer to the National hospital for a  proper attention to his health, insisting he was down with a couple of serious health challenges including with his heart and kidney.

He posited that neither the medical facility at the DSS  nor the medical team, was capable to handle his case. He alleged that his blood was drawn and sent to a South African facility.

He, therefore, requested to be transferred to a private ward at the National Hospital.

But Justice James Omotosho in a ruling on that request, ordered the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, to set up an eight to 10- man team to assess Kanu’s health status and, even, determine if he is fit enough to stand trial.

The team should also determine if the facility and medical personnel at the DSS Medical Centre are capable of taking care of Kanu’s alleged health issues.

Justice  Omotosho ordered that the Chief Medical Director of the National Hospital should make the team as a member. The team, the Judge said, must also include a Cardiologist and a Neurologist.

Omotosho also said the team is free to use the DSS medical facility or any other hospital of its choice for the assessment.

The Judge made the order after reviewing the submissions by Kanu’s Lawyer, Dr. Onyechi Ikpeazu, SAN, and the Federal Government’s Lawyer, Asiwaju Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN.

He asked that the result of the assessment be brought to Court within eight days.

Kanu had, a few days ago, alleged that the FG would release him only when it is sure he would die as soon as he is released.

The IPOB Leader has been in custody since 2021.

Court Rules IPOB Leader, Nnamdi Kanu, Has Case To Answer… Ordered To Open Defence

Nnamdi Kanu in Court

By Charles Igbo

A Federal High Court, Abuja, on Friday, September 26, 2025, ruled that the Leader of the Indigenous Peoples Of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has a case to answer.

The Honourable Justice James Omotosho struck out the no-case submission by Kanu and ordered him to open his defence.

The Federal Government had dragged Kanu to Court and preferred charges against him which included, among others, treasonable felony.

Kanu leads IPOB, a group agitating for an independent State of Biafra which, according to it, would include all Igbo-speaking areas of Nigeria.

The ruling dismissing his no- case submission came after the Federal Government closed its case against Kanu having presented witnesses and evidence(s).

Kanu arrived the Court, Friday, alongside his Lawyer, Kanu Agabi, SAN, a former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, escorted by operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS.

The Federal Government’s legal team is led by Asiwaju Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN.

Not a few people had hoped, and wished, that the Federal Government would use the window offered by the no-case application filed by Kanu, and set him free.

A couple of times, Kanu had either been granted bail or set free by Courts, but that had not happened as the Federal Government appealed such rulings.

Friday’s ruling means that Kanu’s real trial and defence would now start in earnest.

Kanu has been under the custody of the Federal Government and facing prosecution since his rendition from Nairobi, Kenya in 2021.

All efforts for a political solution to his case had fallen through, the promise by, especially, late President Muhammadu Buhari to release him after a passionate appeal by Igbo Elders notwithstanding.

A number of organizations, including Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide, had, also, appealed for his release a number of times but in vain.

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, in the 2023 general elections, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has vehemently denied writing any letter to the All Progressive Congress, APC, expressing the desire to return to its fold.

The Source reports that an APC Chieftain ,Joe Igbokwe, had on Wednesday September 24,2025 claimed that the former Governor of Kano state has written to the party leadership expressing his willingness to rejoin the APC , alongside Governor Abba Kabiru Yusuf.

But in a statement issued on Friday September 26, the leader of the Kwankansiya Movement , categorically denied ever writing to the APC  or any other party seeking to join.

“We have been alerted to some online statements suggesting that we have submitted a letter of intent to join a political party in the country.

“We would like to clarify that we have not made any such submission to any party.

“The public is, therefore, advised to stay informed of any further information regarding our matter through the established official channels”, Kwankwaso stated

The NNPP Presidential Candidate, of late, has been locked in a seemingly unending discussions with President Bola Tinubu on the possibility of his joining forces with the APC.

Only a few days ago, Senator Kwankwaso had publicly admitted fancying the idea of  defecting to the ruling party at the centre, but with a caveat: to do so  only on his own terms.

His open declaration and series of meetings both directly and indirectly with the President and APC National leadership tended to accentuate speculations and permutations about his possible defection to the party ahead of the 2027 polls.

Spokesman of the Command, Olusola Ayanlade, stated that “The case was transferred to the Monitoring Unit, State Command Headquarters, for discreet investigation.

“In the course of proceedings, the matter was charged before the Family Magistrate Court, leading to the remand of the child’s mother, one Nneka Onah ‘f’, alongside Sunday Happiness ‘f’, at the Ondo Correctional Centre before they were later granted bail.

“While investigations continued, a breakthrough came on 9th July, 2025, when the complainant, Sunday Kingsley, returned to the station to report that the missing child had been sighted in Asaba, Delta State.

“Acting without delay, detectives of the Command’s Gender Desk Team moved into action, successfully recovered the child and brought her back safely to Akure.

“The operation also led to the arrest of one Amaka Chukwuemeka ‘f’, aged 30 years, who confessed that she had purchased the child for Three Million, Seven Hundred Thousand Naira.

Atiku Abubkar and Bola Ahmed Tinubu

Former Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential candidate has decried what it edscribed as a smear campaign against him by the Bola Ahmed Tinubu’ s administration. He said some faceless persons were being commissioned to issue statements on the his  behalf, describing the act as the handiwork of the Presidency.

Abubakar made the allegation in a statement signed on Thursday by his Media Adviser, Paul Ibe,saying the “faceless mercenaries’ are being sponsored by the administration to fabricate false stories against him.

“We have observed with concern a certain self-styled ‘media consultant,’ one Kola Johnson, issuing press releases in the name of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Ibe said, “Our findings point directly to the Presidency, which in its desperation to smear opposition leaders, has resorted to hiring faceless mercenaries to fabricate fake stories and circulate unauthorized statements on Atiku.

“Atiku Abubakar has never engaged one Kola Johnson as a media consultant, aide, or associate. Any statement issued in that name is fake and should be disregarded. We urge media houses that have published such falsehoods to immediately retract them.”

APC Reacts To ADC Abuja Caucus Meeting: We Are Not Rattled

David Mark - ADC Chairman
David Mark

The ruling All progressives Congress, APC, has dismissed the African Democratic Congress, ADC as a threat saying it’s not frightened by whatever the latter is doing, The Punch reports.

APC Director of Publicity, Bala Ibrahim, made the remark following the caucus meeting held by the ADC in Abuja, the nation’s capital on Thursday.

The meeting, attended by key opposition leaders in the country, such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, former governors Rauf Aregbesola, Rotimi Amaechi, David Mark, ADC National Chairman, among others, the party said was convened to determine its future ahead the 2027 general elections.

The magazine had earlier reported that key opposition leaders in the country has adopted ADC as their platform to contest the 2027 election against the ruling APC.

Thus following the caucus meeting held yesterday, not a few Nigerians insist that the ADC appears to be consolidating its position less that two years into the election.

Reacting, Ibrahim said the APC is not moved by the development, saying politicians are at liberty to join any party they wish, adding that his party has been defectors from other parties who have strengthen its ranks.

He stressed that the APC has shown that it’s a party to beat judging from its recent victory during the off- season National Assembly election. The APC cleared majority of the seats during the bye-elections conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC across the country.

He said, “This is nothing to frighten or put the APC in any state of embarrassment. As a matter of fact, the political atmosphere has given people room to realign. Don’t forget, the APC has been receiving an influx of people who are leaving their parties and joining the APC. So, people are at liberty to change sides and change signs as they wish.

“But I assure you, the APC will only grow in strength. If some leave, others will join, just as others are already joining.

“So, we are not bothered. We’re not bothered. We’re just at our strength. In the last elections, the recently concluded by-elections, it is clear that the ADC does not have the strength to rattle the APC. So, this is nothing to give the APC sleepless nights. You will soon see more people joining from other political parties, including from the ADC.”

The 2023 Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Peter Obi was not among key opposition leaders who held a caucus meeting in Abuja, the nation’s capital on Thursday under the umbrella of the African Democratic Congress, ADC.

Obi has yet to make a remark on why he was absent at the meeting, sources close to him however insist that the former Anambra state governor is still weighing his chances in the party, as its presidential candidate for the 2027 election.

The former LP presidential candidate has also been secretly holding talks with the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, political analysts informed the magazine on Friday, citing his recent meeting with a former president, Goodluck Jonathan, who is also among PDP has contacted to be its candidate in the election slated for less than two years.

Instructively, the ADC has said the issue of who becomes the party’s presidential candidate is not yet on the table, saying what’s paramount is how to build the party ahead the elections, those watching the ADC closely said Obi is not sure of his chances against a former Vice President Atiku Abubkar who was among those who attended the meeting yesterday.

Apart from Abubakar, Rotimi Amaechi, a former Minister and governor of Rivers state is another prospective presidential aspirant eyeing the ADC ticket, and was among those at the meeting yesterday.

The meeting, sources said, was held to discuss the future of the ADC and those who attended apart from Abubakar and Amaechi, include  former House of Representative Speaker, Aminu Tambuwal, and former Governor of Kaduna state, Nasir El Rufai.

Others who attended the caucus meeting include the National Chairman of the ADC and its national Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, a former governor of Osun state, amongst others.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi disclosed that all the leaders have been directed to formerly join the party, and leave their current political parties.

Abdullahi also stated that the coalition leaders have decided to put to rest its earlier decision to register the Advanced Democratic Alliance, ADA, a political party formed recently by those planning to oust President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, from power but has failed to get the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC’s nod for registration as one of the political parties in the country.

Recall that the Prof Mahmood Yakubu-led INEC had earlier declined to register ADA citing some anomaly in the documents the party submitted for registration.

The ADC spokesman said the coalition leaders have decided to rest the quest to register ADA for now, and focus on building the ADC which they recently adopted to contest the next election against the ruling party.

Abdullahi said,  “Though final order has been given to all members to resign membership of other political parties, the caucus was silent on the timeline.

“The coalition has rested everything concerning the ADA. That means, they are not interested in the registration or otherwise of the association.

“All the presidential aspirants have agreed to support whoever wins the primaries election.”
