El-Rufai, 7 Others, Summoned By Police, ADC Kaduna Office Sealed

Nasir El-Rufai and Kaduna ADC Office

By Adesina Soyooye

Former Governor of Kaduna State, and a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Nasir El-Rufai, has been summoned by the Kaduna State Police Command to appear for questioning.

Invited along with El-Rufai are seven other members of the ADC. They are: Bashir Sa’idu, Jafar Sani, Ubaidullah Mohammed (popular as 30), Nasiru Maikano, Aminu Abita, and Ahmed Rufa’i Hussaini (aka Mikiya).

El-Rufai and the seven, according to the Police invitation letter, are being invited for questioning for alleged criminal conspiracy, incitement of public disturbance, mischief, and causing public hurt.

Dated September 4, 2025, and signed by Uzaini Abdullahi, Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department, CID, the letter directed the ADC State Chairman to produce El-Rufai and the others at the State Criminal Investigation Department  SCID, on September 8.

Titled “Investigation Activities: Case of Criminal Conspiracy, Inciting Disturbance of Public Peace, Mischief and Causing Grievous Hurt”, the letter informed that the invitation was to enable the individuals clarify allegations leveled and reported against them.

In another development, the ADC Office on No 4 Akilu Road, Kaduna, was sealed on Wednesday just before the arrival of the ADC North-west Leaders  scheduled to visit the Kaduna State CHAPTER of the Party, Wednesday, to commiserate with members.

The Police deployed a number of Police patrol vehicles around the premises to block every access to the ADC office.

The visit was meant to commiserate with members of the Party who sustained injuries when political thugs attacked a meeting of the Social Democratic Party, SDP and ADC a few days ago.

El-Rufai, until a couple of months ago, was a chieftain of the APC. But the relationship between him and President Bola Tinubu became so very untidy that El-Rufai turned a strong critic of both the APC and the President.

He later dumped the APC for the SDP. He was later to join a coalition of prominent opposition members across political parties under the ADC. Their bid is to stop President Tinubu from getting a second term in office. El-Rufai is very optimistic on that.

Why Jonathan Won’t Contest, Whatever the Courts Say

After the main opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) announced last week that it would zone the presidency to the South in 2027, some names have been widely mentioned as possible frontrunners.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan and the Labour Party’s presidential flagbearer in the last election, Peter Obi, are perhaps the two most serious contenders.

With Obi confused and trapped byhis volatile “Obidient” base, Jonathan has been framed as the more viable option, but. The “but,” widely considered to be potentially Jonathan’s biggest obstacle, is a legal risk that the courts might overturn his candidature because of a constitutional amendment (after he left office in 2015), which bars him – or anyone twice sworn in – from retaking the oath of office.

Goodluck Jonathan
Dr. Goodluck Jonathan:

Keyamo’s free advice

The PDP and a relative of the former president, suspected of speaking for him, have told the Aviation Minister, Festus Keyamo, SAN,and rights activist, Chidi Odinkalu, who are among the most recent to flag this risk, to mind their business. While it would seem foolish for political parties to intentionally walk into a legal landmine (though the PDP could because common sense is not one of its virtues), the legal risk to Jonathan may not be the most dangerous. The real danger is not far-fetched: our short memory.

This is why Jonathanlooks like a viable optionandis now beginning to think of himself as one. Our short memory is why politicians take us for a ride. Jonathan must be pinching himself, surprised that his name is coming up at all.

Not that he cannot throw his hat in the ring, damning any legal consequences. Or because 10 years after he left office, life seems better retrospectively than it was. Whatever anyone might say, when Jonathan looks in the mirror, his incompetent five-year record looks back and responds with the question, Can this be true? The former president cannot believe his good luck.

Chased out

He was chased out of office. The immediate trigger was insecurity. At the height of the Boko Haram insurgency under Jonathan, terrorists invaded schools, kidnapped students and bombed markets, motor parks, places of worship, and military installations. They even attacked the UN building in Abuja, forcing the Presidency to barricade itself and many public offices behind huge boulders, turning Abuja into a concrete jungle.

At some point, it was reported that swathes of Northeastern Nigeria, roughly the size of Belgium, were under the firm control of Boko Haram. Jonathan’s response, especially after the kidnapping of the Chibok girls, was both confused and genuinely pathetic. He was out of favour with the West, especially the US, which suspended the supply of military hardware on allegations of corruption and human rights abuse by the army’s top brass.

Enemies within

But his biggest headache was inside. Out of frustration, he once said that he believed elements in his government were working for the insurgents. Or perhaps they were working for themselves and the insurgents, as an investigation of monies released through the office of the National Security Adviser at the time would later show that $2.4 billion was unaccounted for.

Whether Jonathan was right or wrong on that, his enemies in plain sight were members of his own house –the party chairman, Adamu Mu’azu and other stalwarts, especially from the North, who felt betrayed that, contrary to an “understanding” that he would have one term after Yar’Adua’s death, Jonathan was preparing to run for office again.

Since all political affiliations are opportunistic, the people who betrayed him want him to run again. Perhaps the former president has found the talisman to avenge himself. Whatever has renewed his confidence, his biggest bet is that a) we would accept the excuse that he was not responsible for his disastrous tenure, and b) with the indulgence of hindsight, we are worse off today than we were under him.

A chastening legacy

He is wrong on both. The legacy of tackling terror and its various franchises – from kidnapping to banditry – by appeasement or indulgence was a pastime of the Jonathan administration. His government turned a blind eye to militants in the Niger Delta, whose criminality the government treated as a counterbalance to violent extremism in the North. Consequently, while lives were being lost upcountry, Nigeria lost billions of dollars in revenue down south. A NEITI report said Nigeria lost about 268 million barrels of crude oil between 2009 and 2015 due to oil theft and pipeline vandalism. The cost in 2013 alone was $8 billion.

Remember that crude oil production under Jonathan was relatively high, reaching about 2.29 million bpd, despite theft and sabotage, while, despite volatility, the price also remained high. At one time, oil sold at $120 per barrel.

What happened to the money? There were frequent and prolonged strikes by lecturers over poor funding, while hospitals were starved of medicines and basic equipment. States struggled to pay wages and owed for months, and pensioners, as always, were among the worst hit.

But that’s not what we’d like to remember. Instead, we’d like to remember that the naira exchanged for 197/$, and after rebasing, Nigeria’s economy was the largest in Africa, even though the foreign reserves that stood at $40 billion in May 2010 when he became president soon dropped to $29.6 billion when he left office.

Cost of a presidency

At what cost? For five years under Jonathan, an estimated N3.9 trillion was spent on fuel subsidies, a great deal of which disappeared (some in dollars) under the long caps of national assembly members, the fancy wardrobes of a minister of petroleum resources, or thedebauchery of a new bowler-hat-wearing middle class permanently camped at Transcorp Hilton, where elite vanity was on stilts.

Attempts to reform the power sector under Jonathan were mainly scams. Fake investors paid for government assets with hollow promissory notes or whatever the currency of cronyism could afford them. The deals were even sweetened by a government disbursement of N213 billion to buyers to complete the scandalous transactions. We are still paying the price today with insolvent power distribution companies claiming that the government owes them about N4 trillion!

Romanticising the past

In hard, difficult times, every straw looks like a lifesaver. The sudden removal of petrol subsidy, followed almost immediately by the merger of the exchange rate by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government, has taken a toll on households, evoking memories of a romantic past in many circles, often measured by the price of rice.

But we are where we are mainly due to decades of kicking the can down the road. Sadly, politicians who have been kicking us – with the can – down the road are not only complaining the loudest, they are determined to exploit our misery and short memory for their benefit. Jonathan is their tribe. And whatever the courts say, we shouldn’t forget that.

Auto Crash Claims Couple, Two Others In Abuja, Police Confirms

Vehicle Accident in FCT Abuja

By Akinwale Kasali

No fewer than four persons have been confirmed dead in a ghastly auto crash at the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja.

Confirming the fatal incident, the Federal Capital Territory Police Command said four lives was lost in the fatal vehicle accident that occurred on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at about 1:30 p.m., along the Nnamdi Azikiwe Expressway by Mabushi Underbridge.

It would be recalled that it was earlier reported that a family of three had died after some louts forcefully hopped into the vehicle while stopping by the bridge to pick up a passenger.

The refusal of the driver to pay the “fine” angered the louts, who then hopped into the vehicle, dragging the steering wheel and eventually causing the accident.

However, the Police Public Relations Officer, FCT Command, SP Josephine Adeh, in a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday, said preliminary investigations showed that the driver of the vehicle, one Emeka Ehekweme, was with his wife before they were accosted by three unidentified suspects who forcefully entered the vehicle near Berger Junction, Utako.

She noted that in the ensuing struggle for control of the steering, the vehicle lost control, struck another parked Mazda vehicle and somersaulted into a bridge pillar.

Ehekweme, his wife and two of the “assailants” died on the spot, while the third assailant was rushed to the National Hospital.

“The FCT Police Command regretfully wishes to confirm a fatal motor vehicle accident that occurred on 3rd September 2025 at about 1:30 p.m. along Nnamdi Azikiwe Expressway by Mabushi Underbridge.

“Preliminary findings indicate that a grey Toyota Highlander, registration number ABJ 206 EC, driven by one Emeka Ehekweme with his wife, was accosted by three unidentified suspects who forcefully entered the vehicle near Berger Junction, Utako.

“In the ensuing struggle for control of the steering, the vehicle lost control, struck another parked Mazda vehicle and somersaulted into a bridge pillar.

“The Highlander’s driver, his wife, and two of the assailants were confirmed dead on arrival at the National Hospital, while a third suspect is currently receiving treatment. The Mazda driver, one Suleman Mohammed, sustained no life-threatening injuries”, the statement partly read.

The PPRO commiserated with the family of the deceased, further stating that investigations were underway into the circumstances of the incident.

She assured members of the public of a “thorough investigation” by the Police, adding that further developments will be communicated in due course.

“Investigation into the circumstances of the incident is underway. The Command commiserates with the families of the deceased and assures the public of a thorough investigation to ascertain the facts of the matter. Further development will be communicated in due course,” Adeh added.

“Banditry Will Become A Forgotten Issue In Zamfara If I Am Given Control Over Security Agencies” – Gov Lawal

Dauda Lawal - Zamfra State Governor

By Akinwale Kasali

Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has  stated that  banditry will become history in the State if he is given the opportunity to be in charge of the Security Agencies and apparatus in the State.

Promising to wipe out Banditry within two months if given the opportunity, the Governor said that it was sad that Security Agencies receive directives from Abuja, stressing that he knows where the Bandits are in the State.

The Governor, in a video that has gone viral, explained that he knows the exact places where the bandits hide. But he cannot act because security officers in Zamfara take orders only from Abuja.

Governor Lawal said: “I swear to Almighty Allah, wherever a bandit leader is in Zamfara State, I know it. If he goes out, I know.

“With my phone, I can show you where they are today. But we cannot do anything beyond our powers.”

The Governor became emotional as he narrated how residents suffer repeated attacks while security operatives delay because they are waiting for clearance from the Federal Government.

He recalled one incident in Shinkafi Local Government Area where bandits attacked and Security Operatives refused to move without instructions from Abuja.

“If today I have the power to give orders to the security agencies, I can assure you, we will end banditry in Zamfara within two months.

“Most of the time I shed tears for my people, because I see the problem but I cannot order the security men to act in time,” he lamented.

Lawal explained that despite not having direct control, his government has been supporting security efforts.

He said 150 patrol vehicles were shared among the Police, Army, DSS and Civil Defence.

He also noted that thousands of Community Protection Guards and 2,000 hunters from Borno and Yobe states were recruited to join the fight.

“The politicisation of insecurity is not hurting me as a person; it is destroying Zamfara. Some people do not want us to succeed. But I will not stop trying,” the Governor added.

Following the State of insecurity in Zamfara, there have been calls from different quarters that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu declare a State of Emergency.

Kano Govt To Wike: Stop Deporting Those Living With Disability, Empower Them

FCT deported Those Living with Disability

By Ayodele Oni

Kano State Government has frowned at incessant deportation of those living with disability from the streets of the Federal Capital Territory, (FCT) to their home States.

The FCT administration had announced that as part of measures to make the streets of the Federal Capital cleaner, beggars and other miscreants would be cleared and sent back to their home states

Kano State Government, however, expressed concern over the repeated deportation of citizens from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, to Kano and other states in the North.

The State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Children and Disabled Persons, Hajiya Amina Sani-Abdullahi, made this known in a statement to newsmen on Thursday in Kano.

She said the State Government observed that within the last four weeks, several Nigerian citizens, including indigenes of Kano, Jigawa, Katsina, and Kaduna, were deported from the FCT to Kano.

According to her, the action of the FCT Administration contradicts the constitutional right of every Nigerian to reside and seek livelihood in any part of the country, provided they do not pose a threat to public peace and safety.

“The FCT is not the property of a single state or region; it is the common heritage of all Nigerians and, as such, a home for all.

“If certain individuals are found engaging in activities that you consider undesirable, the humane and constitutional approach would be to design empowerment programmes.

“Provide grants, or create opportunities for rehabilitation and meaningful economic engagement not forceful deportation.

“In Kano, we host people from all over Nigeria, including Rivers State and other regions, and they live, work, and contribute to our economy without discrimination.

“This is the spirit of national brotherhood that strengthens our unity,” she said.

The commissioner added that reports from some of the deportees indicated they were allegedly held in custody for more than 10 days under harsh conditions, and fed once daily.

She described the treatment as degrading and unacceptable in a democratic society.

Sani-Abdullahi said the state government, under Gov. Abba Kabir-Yusuf, would not tolerate the humiliation of its citizens, urging the FCT Administration to end unconstitutional deportations.

“We urge the FCT Administration to reconsider its approach and adopt more humane, lawful, and constructive measures in handling such matters going forward,” she said.

Edo: PDP, Govt Disagree Over Alleged Squandering Of Public Funds On Frivolities

0
Governor Monday Okpebholo

By Ayodele Oni

The Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), in Edo State has accused the All Progressives Congress, (APC)-led government of Governor Monday Okpebholo of allegedly squandering state fund on frivolities.

PDP mentioned the sum of N4.2 billion of taxpayers money to buy SUV vehicles for commissioners in the State, foreign overseas trips by the governor and deputy, as well as appointment of the largest cabinet ever in the state.

The party made the allegation in a statement signed by Chris Nehikhare, Publicity Secretary, Caretaker Committee in the State.

The statement made available to newsmen on Thursday, in Benin City, alleged that each of the SUV vehicles cost N150 million.

Nehikhare alleged that the state government had requested the State House of Assembly for the confirmation of 28 Commissioners-nominees, a figure he noted that will make the most bloated Executive Council in the history of the State.

He also accused Governor Monday Okpebholo and his Deputy Dennis Idahosa of abandoning the state for foreign trips without any clear direction or handover arrangement.

He opined that the alleged abandonment of the state by the duo is a reckless dereliction of responsibility, which has plunged the state into a dangerous leadership vacuum at a time when citizens are groaning under economic hardship, worsening insecurity, and stalled public services.

The PDP spokesman in the state alleged that the social vices were the direct consequences of the ineptitude of the APC-led administration at both the federal and state levels.

“Even more disturbing is the governor’s recent request to the Edo State House of Assembly to confirm 28 commissioner-nominees—a figure that will make this the most bloated Executive Council in the history of the State.

“We are aware that the governor has already concluded plans to squander N4.2 billion of taxpayers’ money on luxury SUVs for these commissioners, each costing an outrageous N150 million

“This reckless expansion of government comes on top of a growing army of Special Advisers, board chairmen, members, and heads of parastatals appointments that have driven the cost of governance in Edo to an all-time high in our 34-year history.

“While other states are prioritizing workers’ welfare by raising the minimum wage in line with increased allocations from the Federation Account, the Okpebholo/Idahosa administration is fixated on buying SUVs, “sharing the money,” and settling political IOUs.

“This wasteful spending spree is especially offensive at a time when Edo hospitals are collapsing, schools lack teachers, roads have become death traps, and communities are left at the mercy of bandits and kidnappers.

“Reports abound of delayed payment of workers’ entitlements, abandoned development projects, and worsening insecurity, yet the governor and his deputy prefer endless foreign junkets and reckless extravagance.

“Are Okpebholo and Idahosa unaware that farmers in Uhunmwonde and Ovia North-East have abandoned their farmlands due to attacks by armed gangs?

“Do they not know that kidnappers continue to terrorize highways and communities across Edo, while markets in Benin and other cities are no longer safe, with traders forced to close early out of fear?”

The party, however, urged the duo to immediately end their alleged reckless junketing abroad and return home to confront the urgent task of governance, restoring security, fixing schools and hospitals, paying workers, repairing roads, and giving Edo people the dignity they deserve.

Reacting, the Edo State Government described the allegations as falsehood, reckless, misleading, and poorly conceived.

A statement by Fred Itua, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, also added that the alleged abdication of responsibilities and mismanaging state resources by the State Governor and his Deputy were not only false, but a desperate attempt by the PDP.

“For clarity, we state unequivocally that the Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa, is presently in Edo State, diligently discharging his official responsibilities.

“The insinuation that both the Governor and his Deputy abandoned the State is a product of mischief and deliberate falsehood. At no time has Edo been left without leadership.

“The PDP must be reminded that governance in Edo today is not run on propaganda or guesswork; it is run on systems, structures, and accountability.

“The attempt by the PDP to mislead the public on workers’ welfare is both laughable and embarrassing. Edo is currently among the top three States in Nigeria with the highest minimum wage, at N75,000.”

On the bloated political appointments, the government alleged that the PDP’s attempt to portray inclusiveness as excess is another show of bad faith.

Itua stated that the current administration in the state is building a government of capacity, competence, and representation across all senatorial districts.

He opined that governance requires expertise and balance, noting that what the PDP brands as “bloated,” Edo people recognise as strategic inclusion for effective service delivery.

He, however, urged the public to disregard the alleged falsehoods peddled by the PDP adding that Edo State is not rudderless.

“The state is firmly on course under the purposeful leadership of Governor Monday Okpebholo and his deputy, Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa.

“The administration remains resolute in its mission to deliver the dividends of democracy, restore Edo’s pride, and secure a prosperous future for all”, he stated.

DHQ Warns Protesting Retired Soldiers, Says Their Demand Illegal

EX-Soldiers Protesting

By Ayodele Oni

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has  clarified that some of the retired soldiers that blocked the gate of Federal Ministry of Finance during their protest are not entitled to what they are demanding for.

DHQ has, therefore, cautioned the retired soldiers staging protests at the Federal Ministry of Finance, insisting that their demands for wage adjustments based on the new minimum wage policy cannot be met because government directives take effect from specified dates only.

Speaking at a by-weekly routine operational briefing on the ongoing military operations of the Armed Forces of Nigeria in Abuja on Thursday, Major Gen Markus Kangye, the Director Defence Media Operations informed that the military authorities explained that the protests were tied to grievances over the Creativity and Security Development Allowance (CSDA), which is calculated strictly on the salary chart effective at the time of a soldier’s retirement.

According to Maj Gen. Kangye, the Federal Government approved and implemented a new minimum wage for federal workers on 29 July 2024.

“Prior to that date, a pre-minimum wage chart had guided payment computations from 1 January 2024 to 28 July 2024.

“Soldiers who retired within that pre-minimum wage window are demanding that their benefits be recalculated under the new chart.

“That cannot happen because the policy only came into force from July 29, 2024.”

The DDMO lamented that despite several clarifications, some veterans have continued to block access and disrupt normal operations at the Finance Ministry.

While acknowledging their right to peaceful protest, the military hierarchy stressed that such actions must not obstruct government activities.

“Policies have effective dates, and this case cannot be an exception. We urge our veterans to exercise restraint, avoid barricading federal premises, and allow the Ministry of Finance to function,” the Defence Headquarters warned.

Military authorities assured that serving personnel continue to operate under carefully planned and flexible operational strategies, reaffirming their professionalism in safeguarding national security.

Rtd Soldiers Stage Peaceful Protest Over Unpaid Entitlements

EX-Soldiers Protesting

By Akinwale Kasali

Following the alleged failure of the Nigerian Army in paying their entitlements, retired soldiers took to the streets of Abuja to stage in a protest.

The retired soldiers had called off their protest on August 4, after a meeting with officials of the Ministries of Defence and Finance, who assured them that their outstanding entitlements would be paid by August 10. But following the failure of the Ministry in keeping to its promise, the ex-servicemen resumed protest Thursday.

They converged on the Ministry of Finance headquarters in the nation’s capital, accused the authorities of neglect and failure to honour promises made after their meeting last month.

The protesters said they were forced to return to the streets after previous assurances yielded no results.

One of the protesters who identified herself as Mama G, said, “We are here because the promises made to us were never fulfilled. We had no choice but to return to the streets. This time around, the protest will be massive”, she stated.

Another protester who pleaded anonymity said, “This is not the first time we have demonstrated. In recent years, retired soldiers have repeatedly taken to the streets in Abuja and other cities over what they describe as unfair treatment and neglect, and this has been a recurring decimals”.

The Ministry of Defence, Defence Headquarters and Military Pension Board have yet to issue an official response as of the time of filing in this report.
