World Bank: Africa Loses $200bn Annually To Poor Sanitation

0
World-Bank-President-Banga

The World Bank has raised alarm over the growing global sanitation crisis, warning that nearly two out of five people worldwide lack access to safe sanitation, with dire consequences for public health, economic growth, and the environment.

The global financial institution also raised an alarm that Africa is losing as much as $200 billion annually in economic gains, due to poor sanitation, warning that the continent’s GDP could rise by up to five per cent with adequate investment in water and sanitation services.

This was contained in a report titled “The Global Sanitation Crisis: Pathways for Urgent Action,” released by the World Bank on Tuesday.

Sanitation remains one of the most pressing global development challenges. According to United Nations estimates, around 3.5 billion people still lack access to safe sanitation facilities, contributing to preventable diseases such as cholera, diarrhoea, and typhoid, which collectively cause hundreds of thousands of deaths annually, especially among children under five.

In Africa, the challenge is compounded by rapid urbanisation, poverty, and weak infrastructure. Informal settlements in major cities often lack proper sewage systems, forcing residents to rely on unsafe alternatives that contaminate water sources.

The World Health Organisation, WHO, has repeatedly stressed that poor sanitation not only fuels disease but also limits economic productivity by keeping children out of school and adults away from work.

Global bodies, including the UN and World Bank, have tied improved sanitation to the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 6, which calls for “clean water and sanitation for all” by 2030. However, progress has been slow, with funding gaps, weak policy frameworks, and climate pressures further widening the divide between developed and developing nations.

The Bretton Wood United States-based institution’s  report warned that the burden is particularly heavy in low and middle-income countries. It further noted that worsening climate threats are compounding the challenge.

The report partly reads, “The Global Sanitation Crisis: Pathways for Urgent Action”, examines the risks that poor sanitation poses to people, economic growth, and the environment. It outlines practical steps that cities and countries can take to accelerate progress toward universal access to resilient, safely managed sanitation—promoting healthy communities, sustainable environments and reduced greenhouse gas emissions, thriving economies, resilient cities, job creation, and greater human productivity.

“There is a global sanitation crisis with nearly 2 out of 5 people across the world lacking access to safe sanitation. In low- and middle-income countries, one third of urban residents face a ‘triple burden’ of inadequate sanitation, poverty, and climate risks—leaving them especially vulnerable to disease, water scarcity, disasters, and economic hardship.

“Escalating climate-related threats—such as flooding, drought, and rising sea levels—are putting increasing strain on already fragile sanitation systems, resulting in significant GDP losses, especially in low – and middle-income countries. By investing in smart and resilient urban sanitation now, countries can turn this vicious cycle into a virtuous one, where sanitation services withstand extreme weather and disasters, protect human health, boost economic growth and create jobs, reduce pollution, and transform cities.”

On the economic front, the World Bank highlighted the cost-benefit of sanitation investments. It added that stronger sanitation systems would also protect the environment.

It also linked improved access to sanitation with better educational outcomes.

“Investment in water supply and sanitation yields significant returns. Every US$1 spent in Africa returns US$7 – adequate funding in the sector could boost the GDP by 5 per cent, resulting in an annual economic gain of US$200 billion in Africa alone.

“Resilient sanitation reduces emissions and pollution from unsafe waste treatment, protecting the environment and global ecosystems. That means a reduction of up to 10% in global methane emissions and cleaner, more reliable drinking water.

“Improved access to sanitation in schools has been linked to increased enrollment in primary schools in India, including a substantial increase in the enrollment of adolescent girls when provided with sex-specific latrines. In Brazil, there has been an increase in completed school years,” the report added.

The World Bank recommended urgent action by governments and stakeholders. It stressed that investing in climate-resilient, citywide, inclusive sanitation would deliver long-term benefits.

“Recommendations for Action: Governments, cities, service providers, and communities must work together toward three goals: Prioritise sanitation policy and funding at the local and national levels. Design inclusive, integrated urban sanitation infrastructure and services that can withstand climate impacts and contribute to water-secure cities. Support technological innovation, gather data, share knowledge, and train workers to build and manage new systems.

“Investing in climate-resilient, citywide, inclusive sanitation ensures the safe management of human waste across the entire sanitation service chain. This protects vulnerable communities and the environment while strengthening urban resilience and water security.

“It also supports circular economy approaches by transforming faecal sludge and wastewater into valuable resources—reducing pollution, generating energy, creating jobs, and enabling water reuse. These benefits collectively enhance the resilience of urban ecosystems, “the report said.

Mass withdrawals have hit the Flying Eagles Team heading for the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile. This is worsened by the refusal of European Clubs to release players for the Youth World Championship.

French Club Side, Stade Reims and Germany Club Side, Hoffenheim have refused to release Nigerian players for the competition, which is not on FIFA’s official calendar.

This allows clubs to withhold players from international duty.

Emmanuel Chukwu and Precious Benjamin, both with Hoffenheim, will miss the tournament in Chile after the club turned down a request from the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, for the Club to release the Nigeria International.

Ibrahim Hafiz, a striker with Stade Reims, is also unavailable after the French side declined to release him.

All three players are considered key prospects for the team.

Head Coach, Aliyu Zubairu has adjusted his plans and named a final 21-man squad without several overseas-based players.

Enyimba Football Club winger, Clinton Jephta, along with Bidemi Amole and Divine Oliseh, who featured at the U-20 WAFU B qualifiers in Togo, were left out.

Team Captain, Daniel Bameyi headlines the squad, witu over 10 players named have participated in recent training camps and friendly matches.

New inclusions include Israel Ayuma, Ebenezer Harcourt, Charles Agada, Auwal Ibrahim, Kparobo Arierhi, Tahir Maigana, and Odinaka Okoro.

Adamu Maigari, a regular fullback, was ruled out due to a knee injury.

The team however departed Abuja for Chile on Sunday night.

Norway-based midfielder, Daniel Daga is expected to join the squad in Chile ahead of their opening match.

The Flying Eagles will aim to improve on recent performances and compete strongly for the title when the tournament kicks off later this month.

The tournament, which kicks off on September 27, will end on October 20 in Chile.

The Seven-time African champions, Nigeria will play all their Group F matches at the Estadio Fiscal in Talca, a city 250 kilometres from the Chilean capital, Santiago.

Rev Fr Ezemba

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

Palpable apprehension and anxiety have gripped the Catholic Church in Kogi State following the reported kidnap of one  its Clerics.

The Source reports that Rev Fr Wilfred Ezemba of the St Paul Parish Agaliga-Efabo in Olamaboro Local Council abducted by gunmen while on transit along Imane-Ogugu Road on Saturday September 13, 2025.

He is believed to have been kidnapped together with some other occupants of a commercial vehicle while returning home from an assignment.

The Catholic family in Imane ,as well as the entire Olamaboro Local Council have been thrown into a state of uncertainty and apprehension over the safety of the Rev Fr Ezemba owing to the inability of his captors to establish contact either with the Church or family members since the incident.

“Our concern and anxiety are high because since his abduction, three days ago, his captors have not made any contact either to demand for ransom or any other things.

“But we are confident that the Almighty God will deliver him safely from the grip of his abductors. We believe strongly in the efficacy of our prayers.  He will eventually regain his freedom”, one of his colleagues, Rev Fr Michael volunteered.

Although no official statement has been issued  by the police  concerning the incident, there are strong indications that security operatives, including local groups, have been engaged in concerted efforts to rescue Rev Fr Ezemba ,and others involved.

Like most parts of Kogi state, Olamaboro Local Council is one of the areas that have been hit by an orgy of violent attacks, killings and abductions of unsuspecting residents including security personnel in recent times.

However, Yagba West and East Local Government Councils in Okun area of the State remain the epicentre of the criminal activities.

Rivers State  Local Government Election Legitimate, Constitutional Court

Judiciary and Court

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

An attempt to render the recently held Rivers State Local Council Polls  nuggetory has collapsed

This followed the dismissal  of a motion on notice by a Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt ,of the motion on notice filed by a legal practitioner, Williams Abayomi-Stanley, challenging the processes that threw up the August 30 Local Government election in the state .

The Source reports that  Abayomi-Stanley had, in the wake of the polls had his ex-parte motion seeking to halt the election on the grounds that the Michael Odey-led Rivers state Independent Electoral Commission RSIEC was not properly and legally constituted , equally dismissed by the Court for lacking in merit..

Justice Stephen Jumbo, while delivering judgment on the issue of locus standi, as well as the jurisdiction of the Court to hear the case, held that the applicants ( Williams Abayomi-Stanley) failed to adduce sufficient evidence to substantiate how the conduct of the election will negatively affect him.

Similarly, the Judge ruled that the claimant did not provide enough proof of the likely personal injuries and or threat of injuries ,he will suffer ,if the issues raised in his originating summons are addressed by the court .

The Judge held that all the issues contained in the originating summons were issues which only the Governor could raise, and not the applicant,  since they are not personal to him, or have the capacity to affect his personal interests .

In dismissing the entire application, Justice Jumbo, also declared the Local Council Polls the conducted on Saturday August 30 ,2025 valid and constitutional.

He held that the exercise was neither conducted by the Governor’ nor the Sole Administrator, but by a body mandated by the constitution for such an exercise–the Rivers state Independent Electoral Commission RSIEC.

The Presiding Judge also ruled that the Supreme Court of Nigeria has the constitutional powers to entertain any matter arising from the emergency rule in Rivers state.

The applicant had in the motion on notice questioned the constitutionality of the appointment of a Sole Administrator for Rivers state by the president after the declaration of a state of emergency.

He had also challenged the dissolution of the Governor Similanayi Fubara-appointed RSIEC and the subsequent nomination of the Odey-led electoral Commission by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu

The claimant further contended that only the democratically elected Governor of the state has the constitutional powers to appoint and inaugurate  chairman and members of the state’s Electoral Commission.

The applicant  based on the foregoing, prayed the court to declare null and void the August 30 local council polls.

The Commission stated that the detailed breakdown of the registration figures by state, gender, age, occupation, and disability has been published on its official website and other platforms for public access.

Providing an update on the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Olumekun said that online pre-registration in the FCT ends, Monday, September 15, 2025.

“For the next two weeks, physical registration will continue at designated centres. From September 29 to October 8, 2025, INEC will further decentralize the process by taking registration to all 62 wards in the FCT.”

The Commission added that the addresses of all designated registration centres have been uploaded to its website and social media channels.

INEC urged eligible Nigerians, particularly youths and first-time voters, to take advantage of the exercise to register and participate actively in the electoral process

Ekiti: Gov. Oyebanji Charges Chairmen Not To Abuse LG Autonomy

Biodun Oyebanji - Ekiti State Governor

By Ayodele Oni

Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has advised Local Government Chairmen to eschew financial profligacy and mismanagement which could cause abuse of financial autonomy currently being enjoyed by councils in the state.

Oyebanji pointed out that the cardinal focus of the financial freedom, was to ignite execution of landmark and beneficial projects at the third tier, warning that such dream may be thwarted, if monies accruing to the local governments are being pillaged, or spent on frivolities.

The governor gave the charge at Igogo Ekiti, on Monday, while commissioning some projects executed by the Chairman of Ero Local Council Development Area, (LCDA) Felicia Ibiloye.

At the occasion, the governor  commissioned the new Ero LCDA Secretariat Complex, built by Ibiloye’s administration, and launched Ero LCDA chapter of Adire Ekiti fabric and BAO Aged Foundation, where scores of  indigent elderly benefited clothing materials and rice palliative.

Oyebanji, represented by the Deputy Governor, Monisade Afuye, appealed to Ekiti citizens to back his second term bid, so that the lofty programmes being initiated by his government can gain momentum across all the towns.

As the scramble for the State’s governorship poll approaches, Oyebanji, appealed to the residents above 18 years to participate in the Continuous Voter Registration declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC) to be able to participate in the June 20, 2026 governorship election.

The governor, commended the council boss for maintaining peace and safety with neighbouring state of Kwara, through fostering collaboration among stakeholders to ward off cross border criminals.

“Since assumption of office, we haven’t  hidden our admiration for the local government autonomy, particularly its  financial freedom.

“That is why you must support the governor’s second term and participate in the INEC voter registration, especially those who were not up to 18 years in 2022, so that these good projects can continue.

“Today in our state, our councils are embarking on life- changing projects in road infrastructures, healthcare delivery, school renovation, market stalls construction and reconstruction, commercial  farming to boost food security, among others.

“It is not gainsaying that all these were achieved because of the governor’s preference for financial autonomy for our councils.

“Under this context, our council bosses should redouble efforts, work hard and reciprocate the governor’s gestures, by being prudent and place high premium on delivery of democracy dividends to our people.

“It is our hope that this opportunity wouldn’t be abused in the overall interest of our people.

“The government is indeed very appreciative of the collaborations among all stakeholders in ensuring security of lives across borders in the council despite sharing boundaries with Osun and Kwara States”.

Chairperson of Ero LCDA, Felicia  Ibiloye, anchored her achievement in by the saddle of governance on the financial freedom being savoured under Oyebanji’s government, saying rural development is strategic to development of any nation.

Mrs Ibiloye disclosed that the administration has embarked on channelisation projects to curb erosion and flooding, installation of 800kva/800W solar system, construction of  culverts and Okada garage and many other initiatives that are opening economic opportunities, through the financial freedom given to the council.

Hilda Baci Bags Historic 8780kg Guinness World Record For Largest Serving Pot Of Jollof Rice

Hilda Baci Jollof Pot

By Akinwale Kasali

Nigerian Chef, Hilda Baci, has made history. The Guinness World Record has recognized her historic feat of cooking the largest pot of Jollof Rice in history.

In a statement on Monday, GWR, confirmed that Hilda, who teamed up with Gino Nigeria, prepared a record-breaking 8,780 kg (19,356 lb 9 oz) of Nigerian-style jollof rice last Friday.

The Akwa Ibom-born Chef, Hilda Bassey, completed her attempt for the largest pot of jollof rice during an eight-hour open cooking session at Eko Hotels and Suites, VI, Lagos.

According to the record’s rules, certain ingredients were required, and Hilda revealed the exact measurements of everything she added to her record-breaking dish.

In a gigantic pot, she combined 4,000 kg of washed basmati rice (at least 80% of the total weight, as required), 164 kg of fresh goat meat, 220 kg of Gino Asun & Peppered Chicken Cubes, and 600 kg of her signature jollof pepper mix.

She said it took “nine hours of fire, passion and teamwork,” and 1,200 kg of gas, to produce 16,600 plates of rice “served with joy, love and community.”

Hilda was also required to follow strict rules on food distribution, ensuring that none of it went to waste.

On Instagram, Hilda shared a video of the jollof rice being dished out to supporters who had endured the tantalizing smells before digging in.

Reflecting on her attempt, Hilda said: “I didn’t realize it would be this hard — it has been a real challenge. It took a lot of hard work, but achieving the record is truly satisfying.

“This record also belongs to the people of Nigeria, because they all contributed to its success.”

In May 2023, Hilda broke the internet after setting the record for the longest individual cooking marathon, lasting 93 hours and 11 minutes. The feat in Lekki, Lagos, drew both national and international attention.

Hilda sparked a wave of record-breaking fever across Africa with applications pouring in from people eager to attempt their own marathons.

The longest cooking marathon is a fiercely contested record and has been broken twice since Hilda first claimed it.

In October 2023, Alan Fisher of Ireland cooked for 119 hr 57 min 16 sec, before Australia’s Evette Quoibia pushed the mark even further in February 2024 with 140 hr 11 min 11 sec.

Nnamdi Kanu’s Motion Seeking Medical Attention Suffers Setback

Nnamdi Kanu in Court

By Ayodele Oni

Biafra nation agitator, Nnamdi Kanu’s  motion, seeking an order to be  transferred from the custody of Department of the State Service (DSS) to National Hospital, Abuja, for urgent medical attention, was deferred on Monday by the Abuja Federal High court

Justice Musa Liman declined hearing on the grounds that his fiat to sit as a vacation judge ends on Monday and, therefore, lacked jurisdiction to open such a new matter for hearing.

Justice Liman instead, ordered that the case file be returned to the registry for the Chief Judge to reassign it to another judge.

At Monday’s proceedings, Adegboyega Awomolo SAN appeared for  the Federal Government, while Uchenna Njoku SAN stood for the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

When the matter was called, Kanu’s lawyer informed the judge that the motion by Kanu was filed on September 1 while a counter affidavit of 37 paragraphs opposing the transfer request was served on him by government in the open court.

The senior lawyer said that he had not read the counter affidavit for him to respond.

He therefore applied for an adjournment to enable him respond to the counter affidavit and in view of the fact that the vacation of the judge had come to an end.

On his part, Awomolo SAN did not oppose the adjournment request and that he would be ready to be in court anytime, anyway a new date is fixed.

In a brief ruling, Justice Liman ordered that the case file be returned to the Registry for the Chief Judge to reassign the matter to another Judge.

Justice Liman said that he would make recommendation to the Chief Judge for the speedy hearing of the motion since health of the applicant is involved.

Kanu, had  in the motion with charge number: FHC/ABJ/CR/383/2015, had sought an order of the court for the Department of the State Service DSS to move him from DSS custody to the National Hospital for urgent medical care.

Giving an 11-ground argument why their request should be granted, lead counsel the applicant, Kanu Agabi SAN said his client is presently standing trial before Justice James Omotosho in charge marked: FHC/ABJ/CR/383/2015.

He said Kanu, on May 19, filed an application praying the court to admit him to bail pending the hearing and determination of the terrorism charge.

The lawyer, however, said that the said application could not be taken before the annual vacation of the court, hence his continued detention.

According to him, while awaiting the resumption of the court activities, the applicant’s health took a worrisome decline, necessitating the invitation of doctors for the purpose of carrying out a thorough and extensive examination on the applicant.

“The examination revealed issues to his health including organs such as his pancreas and liver as well as an emerging lump underneath his armpit and dangerously low levels of potassium.

“The doctors have recommended that he be moved to the National Hospital as an interim measure to afford him medical attention and forestall further decline.

“The applicant’s health is seriously deteriorating considering the nature of his confinement thereby making more pressing, the need to bring this application and have same heard by a vacation judge,” Agabi said.

He alleged that a letter by the doctors to the Director-General of the DSS, advising the transfer of Kanu had gone without answer.

He said the urgency of the matter had, therefore, necessitated the filing of the  application as a measure to arrest further decline of his health while spirited efforts are being expended to ensure his treatment.”

The senior lawyer said that the grant of the application would not occasion any injustice on the complainant (DSS).

Besides, Agabi said the court “is imbued with jurisdiction to hear and grant the prayers sought in the application.”

Emmanuel Kanu, the younger brother to Nnamdi Kanu, in the affidavit he deposed to, averred that the IPOB leader recently complained of weakness and pains in his body.

He said this “prompted the invitation of doctors led by the Eminent Emeritus Professor Austin A.C. Agaji, who on 1st September, 2025 at about 2:30pm,” told him that several tests were conducted on Kanu in August.

Emmanuel said the doctor told him, at Agabi’s law firm, that it was discovered that the IPOB leader was suffering from issues relating to his liver and kidney as well as dangerously low level of potassium.

“He was further diagnosed of a swelling around his armpit area which requires urgent attention to ascertain the cause and thereafter to seek appropriate medical treatment,” he averred.

World Record holder, Tobi Amusan, in the 110 Meter Hurdles, has once again made the nation proud. She won a Silver medal in the final of the Women 100m Hurdles at the ongoing World Athletic Championship in Tokyo, Japan, Monday.

The final which was highly competitive, saw Amusan coasting home in an impressive time of 12.29 seconds behind the winner, Diraji Kambundji of Switzerland, who clocked 12.24 to win the gold medal.

Grace Stark of the United States of America won the Bronze medal in a time of 12.34s while Masai Russell finished 4th in 12.44s.

Amusan had made her intention known earlier in the heat and also in her second semi final heat.

She coasted home in 12.36sec to win and qualify for the final.

With her Silver Medal, she remains the only Nigerian athlete at the ongoing Championship to win a medal for the country so far.

It would be recalled that at the last World Athletics Championship in Budapest, Hungary, Nigeria failed to win a medal.

Amusan’s ‘golden’ Silver in Tokyo at the ongoing Championship has surpassed the previous edition in Budapest.

The Silver medal she won has banished the memory of the last Olympics where she failed to reach the final of the event.
