Gov. Soludo To Ekwunife: “Your Apology Lacks Credibility, I Reject It”

By Ayodele Oni

The public apology by the All Progressives Congress (APC) deputy governorship candidate, Senator Uche Ekwunife, to Anambra State Governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo and his wife, has been thrashed and dusted into bin as it was described as “lacking in credibility, and did not emanate from her.”

Governor Soludo described is as “another unsubstantiated social media gossip,” saying that the Soludo administration would proceed as though the document never existed, while still demanding a clear and unambiguous retraction from Senator Ekwunife herself.

This was contained in a statement by Soludo’s Senior Special Assistant on New Media, Mazi Ejimofor Opara, on Wednesday.

In a press statement issued on her behalf by her Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Tony Ezike, Ekwunife extended an unreserved apology to the Soludos, expressing regret over the comments and acknowledging that they crossed a line.

The statement described the apology as a “bold and necessary step” toward de-escalating political tensions and restoring civility.

Ekwunife’s defamatory remarks against Governor Soludo and his wife, led to the First Lady issuing a 72-hour ultimatum to Ekwunife to tender apology or be ready to be dragged to court.

The statement titled ‘Sen. Ekwunife’s Purported Apology: Another Fabrication Fit for the Waste Bin,’ argued that the unsigned press release said to have emanated from the “Ekwunife Campaign Organization,” was suspicious, misleading and inadequate.

“There is no such campaign body since Ekwunife’s ticket is a joint one with the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra.

“The publication purporting to be an apology for the defamatory statements made against the Governor and his wife personally by Senator Ekwunife does not appear to have emanated from the Senator herself, given that her defamatory statements were made directly via recorded video and leaked audio conversation.”

He maintained that any retraction or apology must come directly from Senator Ekwunife, using the same means through which the offensive remarks were made.

The governor added: “The so-called apology never referenced Madam Ekwunife’s initial video and audio, but instead focused on an unsigned article.

“This only points to her complicity, directly or indirectly, as the source of the article. It implies that no genuine apology was intended or tendered.”

The statement recalled that the Anambra First Lady, Dr. Nonye Soludo, had earlier challenged Senator Ekwunife to clear herself on two issues: first, to swear an oath before the Blessed Sacrament affirming fidelity to her marriage; and second, to subject her children to a DNA test, alongside the Soludos’ own children, to disprove infidelity allegations.

Any contrite apology must follow a personal and direct retraction of her defamatory statements. Slander or libel directly made by an individual cannot be vicariously dismissed by any agent or proxy.”

Ekwunife had on Wednesday publicly apologized to Governor Soludo and his wife over an earlier allegation of infidelity.

The apology followed a heated public exchange between the senator and the governor, which escalated after Governor Soludo reportedly questioned the authenticity of Ekwunife’s academic qualifications, particularly her PhD.

In a sharp rebuttal, Ekwunife had involved the governor’s wife in the dispute, making controversial claims about her personal life allegations Mrs. Soludo had firmly denied.

The Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Rear Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, rtd, has officially handed over to the reinstated Governor of the State, Sim Fubara.

In his farewell state-wide broadcast on Thursday, Ibas urged the people of the state to support Fubara as he resumes his duties of leading the state.

President Bola Tinubu had suspended Fubara six months ago while declaring an emergency rule in Rivers State.

On Wednesday, the president lifted the emergency rule, while reinstating Fubara.

In his broadcast, Ibas said: “My dear citizens of Rivers State, it’s with gratitude in my heart and humility in my spirit that I address you today for the final time as administrator of our beloved State.

“Six months ago, Tinubu entrusted me with this solemn responsibility of steering Rivers State through an extraordinary moment in its history.

“Today, I can say with conviction that the grace of God and through our collective effort the mandate has been accomplished.

“Law and order has been restored, local governments elections have been conducted and chairmen elected by the people now serve in office.

“Statutory boards and commissions have been reconstituted and are performing their duties, the state budget has been passed by the National Assembly providing a legitimate physical framework for governance.

“These are milestones of progress that belong to all of us that reflect the resilience of the people determined never to let their state slip into paralysis.

“One of the enduring lessons of this season is that the exercise of power without restraint can cripple institutions and rivalry without dialogue clearly endangers democracy.

“As I reflect on this assignment, I do so with deep appreciation, I have met outstanding men and women across this state bureaucracy, diligent in their duties and devoted to our state. I have benefited from the wise guidance and counsel of statesmen who spoke truth at all moments.

“Now as I hand back the reigns of leadership to Sim Fubara, I do so with confidence and respect and I urge all Rivers people to support him wholeheartedly because leadership and followership is a shared responsibility.

“No matter how competent and clear a vision may be, it can only come to fruition and thrive with the active support of citizens. For me, this is the closing of another chapter in life devoted to service at sea, diplomacy and now in governance.”

Amnesty To DSS: You Can’t Tell Sowore What To Say, Stop Harassing Him

Omoyele Sowore

Global Human rights body, Amnesty International, AI,  has condemned the Department of State Services, DSS, over what it described as the harassment of Omoyele Sowore, Publisher of Sahara Reporters.

The rights body said in  statement on Thursday that DSS demand to Facebook and X to delete Sowores’ posts, describing President Tinubu as a criminal, is a plot to silent him, saying the action negates the international Human Rights Convention signed by the federal government.

The magazine had reported that the DSS has also charged Sowore to court for alleged criminal defamation of the president, as the Sahara Reporters Publisher also branded the charged sheet to have been forged by the Nigerian Secret police.

According to the state release today , Amnesty said it’s wrong for DSS to subject Sowore to another trial, describing the action as a censorship, and abuse of power on the part of the federal government.

The federal government, it said,  lacks power  “to determine what can or cannot be said’ by Nigerians, bemoaning the recent attempt by the administration to clamp down on users of social media in the country.

The statement: “The Nigerian authorities’ consistent and relentless attempts to silence human rights activist Omoyele Sowore must end now.

“The latest attempts to gag him following an appalling demand by the Department of State Service (DSS) for the deactivation of his X and Facebook accounts go too far. The fresh attempt to put him through another unfair trial based on bogus charges is outrageous and clearly show a desperate attempt at censorship and abuse of power.

“The DSS targeting of Sowore’s use of social media platforms is being done without any legal justification recognised under international human rights law and represents a violation of Nigeria’s obligations under the Nigerian Constitution 1999 [as amended] the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Nigeria has ratified both human rights treaties.

“It is not up to any government to determine what can or cannot be said. Over the last ten years, the Nigerian authorities’ campaign of repression often results in the harassment, intimidation, prosecution and imprisonment of people for their social media use. This pattern of repression and intimidation is creating a situation whereby in Nigeria, people will be terrified about speaking their minds.”

The magazine reported that the latest clash between Sowore and DSS started after the journalist branded Tinubu as a corrupt leader, following a remark made by the president, during his recent visit to Brazil that his government has ended corruption in the country.

He applaud President Tinubu for reconciling Governor Fubara and Wike, who he said have now decided to sheathe their swords, by working together, in the over all interest of the oil bering state, saying the timely intervention of the president stopped the state from an imminent implosion.

Alabraba: “Let us deepen the reconciliation that has been achieved. The elders council urges individuals and groups still fanning the embers of discord to desist forthwith. The crisis is over. Rivers’ interest must come first.”

“We specially commend former governor of the state and current Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, for his role in midwifing this reconciliation. Wike demonstrated a large heart by bringing the parties together; he ensured that they gave the president a first-hand briefing about their understanding.

Atiku Shades Tinubu’s Reinstatement Of Fubara, Calls Him Dictator

0

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar says there’s nothing to be celebrated over the reinstatement of Governor Siminalayi Fubara as governor of Rivers state by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

According to him, it was wrong for the president to have suspended the governor from office, saying the decision by the president to now lift his suspension has nothing to cheer about.

Abubakar made the remark on X few hours after President Tinubu suspended the Emergency Rule he imposed on the state, six months ago, on march 18, 2025, to avert what the president described as an impending political violence in the oil bearing state.

The magazine reported that the clash between the governor and Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the FCT, has put the state on the edge of political violence, which Tinubu said he wanted to avert by imposing a State of Emergency.

Apart from suspending the governor, all democratic institution, including the state house of Assembly was also suspended.

The six months Emergency Rule ended on Wednesday, and President Tinubu said there was no need to extend it, saying all the parties involved have now determined to wok together for peace to reign in the oil state.

Reacting to the reinstatement of Governor Fubara and other democratic system in the state, Abubakar said the imposition, in the first instance, was an anomaly and unconstitutional.

He stressed that the Emergency rule was the height of President Tinubu’s dictatorship he has imposed on Nigerians, insisting that Tinubu has no power to remove a “democratically’ elected government of Fubara.

.

He said, “Lifting the suspension of Governor Simi Fubara is nothing to cheer about.

“The suspension of the Rivers State Governor and the State House of Assembly was unconstitutional when it was done six months ago and is still illegal today.

“President Tinubu had no power to suspend a democratically elected governor and state lawmakers. The Rivers shenanigans only signpost the dictatorship of the Tinubu administration.”

Few days ago, the Sole Administrator appointed by the president, Vice Admira lIbok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, a former Chief of Naval Staff disclosed during his valedictory service, in Port Harcourt , the state capital that peace has now been restored to the restive state.

Rivers: CUPP Accuses Supreme Court Of Undermining Democracy, Enabling Despotism

0
Supreme Court of Nigeria

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Coalition of United Political Parties CUPP has berated Nigeria’s Supreme Court for deliberately refusing to entertain the application filed by the Peoples Democratic Party Governors Forum challenging  the emergency rule declaration in Rivers State.

The body expressed serious concern that the Supreme Court has unashamedly offered itself as willing tool in the enthronement of authoritarianism and despotic rule in the country.

The CUPP’s condemnation of the Apex Court is coming against the backdrop of the lifting of the six-month old emergency rule slammed on Rivers state by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The Source reports that the President had, in a statement on Wednesday, lifted the emergency rule which he slammed on the State on March 18, 2025.

However, in a statement from its National Secretary, Peter Ameh, the CUPP accused the Supreme Court of being complicit in the orchestrated plot to undermine the country’s democratic process.

It will be recalled that the PDP Governors Forum had in the wake of the controversial emergency declaration , approached the Supreme court seeking a judicial clarification of  the powers of the president to suspend democratically elected institutions, under the guise of emergency rule.

Curiously, the Supreme Court could not hear the suit before the lifting of the emergency rule, thus denying the country the opportunity of  enriching its jurisprudence.

The CUPP said that the disposition of the Supreme Court is tantamount  to weakening the credibility of the Judiciary ,as well as endangering Nigeria’s democratic foundation.

The CUPP expressed profound disappointment, with the conduct of the highest court in  land, noting that such  act of complicity amounts to prioritizing political interests over the rule of law.

This is as it called on all Nigerians, political parties, civil society organizations, and all well-meaning citizens,  to reject, what it called a dangerous precedent, and a calculated attempt at undermining democracy and rule of law.

“The CUPP firmly believes that democracy thrives on the will of the people and the Independence of institutions, not through arbitrary suspensions or presidential proclamations.

“President Bola Tinubu’s invocation of a State of emergency on March, 18, 2025, citing a feud between Governor Similanayi Fubara and Minister Nyesom Wike alongside isolated incidents of pipeline vandalism, failed to meet the constitutional requirements under Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution.

“This action, executed without the request of elected state officials, undermined the mandate of Rivers state voters, and set a dangerous precedent for the erosion of state autonomy in Nigeria’s federation.

“We demand immediate transparency from the Presidency. The legal memo justifying this emergency, the financial costs incurred, and comprehensive review of the rights violated during this period must be published without delay.

“Nigerians deserve clarity to restore trust in our governance system”, the CUPP statement reads in part.

The CUPP further noted that much as the termination of the emergency rule is a welcome development, it nevertheless insisted that its declaration in the first place remains a gross act of Federal Government’s overreach, as well as a direct assault on Nigeria’s democratic principles.

The Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS, has announced the death of four of its staff in Tuesday’s fire incident at Afriland Towers, Broad Street, Lagos.

FIRS, a tenant at the Afriland Tower,  occupying the sixth and seventh floors of the building, disclosed that the victims who lost their lives include: Ekelikhostse George (Assistant Director), David Sunday-Jatto (Assistant Director), Nkem Onyemelukwe (Senior Manager), and Peter Ifaranmaye (Manager).

A statement, signed by Dare Adekanmbi, Special Adviser on Media to the FIRS Chairman,  reads: “It is with a heavy heart that FIRS announces the tragic loss of four of its staff members during the fire incident at Afriland Towers, Broad Street, Lagos, on Tuesday.

“FIRS is one of the tenants occupying the Towers with our Medium Tax Audit and Onikan Emerging Tax Office housed on the sixth and seventh floors.

“Our Security and Safety officials quickly mobilised and contacted the fire service as soon as they were alerted. On getting to the scene, thick dark smoke was already billowing out of the building.

“The Management and entire staff are in deep shock and sorrow over the development. They offer their condolences to the grieving families and are in touch with the families of our departed colleagues whose commitment to excellence, dedication and professionalism were never in doubt. “No words can capture the magnitude of this loss – not for their families who loved them, not for the friends who valued them, and not for those of us who worked beside them,” he said.

“Yesterday was a stark reminder of what truly matters: our irreplaceable people, those who walk through our doors each day and share our mission. I learnt of this on my way to the US, en route to New York for UNGA.”

Adedeji revealed that he cut short his trip to return to Lagos as a mark of respect to the departed colleagues.

“As we navigate this grief, I urge you all to reach out to those who are receiving care. In the coming days, we will convene colleagues in a memorial to honour the memories of the departed, as we provide support to their families.

“I also want to thank all those who supported in one way or the other, from emergency responders and first aid workers to members of the public who showed courage and compassion.

“May this never happen again in our Group. May the souls of the departed rest in perfect peace.”

A minute’s silence was however observed today at 12:00 noon WAT across all the group companies.

The Nigerian Passport Burden: A Comparative Test of Mobility and Minimum Wage

0
Abraham Amah
Abraham Amah

By Abraham Amah

For millions of Nigerians, securing or renewing an international passport is less a matter of documentation than a journey through stress, delay, and punishing expense. The process has improved in some respects—online applications, NIN verification, and contactless renewals abroad—but when compared with other countries, our passport still symbolizes friction rather than freedom.

The Nigerian Reality

In September 2025, Nigeria increased fees to ₦100,000 for a 32-page five-year booklet and ₦200,000 for a 64-page ten-year booklet. For context, the current national minimum wage is ₦30,000 a month. That means an average Nigerian worker must surrender more than three months’ wages for the smaller booklet, and nearly seven months’ wages for the larger one. Even when procedures run smoothly, many applicants still report variability in processing times, with diaspora offices faring better than domestic centres.

Ghana’s Reform Model

Ghana has shown what reform looks like. Its new chip-embedded passport carries a published service standard: 15 working days for regular applications and 5 working days for expedited ones. The proposed fee stands at GHS 350 (about ₦30,000). With Ghana’s minimum wage at roughly GHS 14.88 per day (around GHS 400 per month), a worker needs about one month’s wage to afford a passport—still heavy, but far lighter than Nigeria’s burden.

South Africa’s Honest Transparency

South Africa charges R600 (about ₦48,000) for a 32-page passport. With a minimum wage around R27 per hour and about R4,300 per month, the average worker spends less than two weeks’ wage on a passport. The drawback is time: applications abroad can take up to six months. Yet the fee is transparent, consistent, and proportionate to earnings.

Egypt’s Middle Ground

Egypt issues passports with a validity of seven years. Costs vary by mission, but typically stand near EGP 500–700 (about ₦15,000–₦20,000). With Egypt’s minimum wage now EGP 6,000 monthly, a passport costs less than one week’s wage. Processing is often faster than in Nigeria, though service quality differs by location.

United Kingdom: Predictability and Options

In the UK, an adult online passport application costs £94.50 (about ₦180,000). With the national minimum wage set at £11.44 per hour—roughly £1,830 per month—a worker pays just about five percent of monthly income for a passport. Processing usually takes about three weeks, with premium fast-track options available. Citizens can plan with certainty.

United States: Clarity and Choice

In the US, a standard adult passport book costs $130 (about ₦170,000). With the federal minimum wage at $7.25 per hour, or about $1,160 per month, this represents just over 11 percent of one month’s wage. Timelines are transparent: 4–6 weeks for routine service, 2–3 weeks expedited for an additional fee.

The Comparative Burden

Measured against minimum wage, the Nigerian passport is the costliest among these nations. Where an American, Briton, or South African gives up only days or weeks of earnings, the Nigerian surrenders months. This is not simply an inconvenience; it is a barrier to mobility, opportunity, and dignity.

The Path Forward

Nigeria’s government can learn from peers:

  • Publish and meet service timelines as Ghana has done.
  • Align costs to income realities, ensuring citizens do not pay seven months of wages for a basic travel document.
  • Guarantee one fee, end-to-end, eliminating unofficial “facilitation.”
  • Invest in capacity, matching staff and infrastructure to demand centres.
  • Report performance data publicly, reinforcing trust and accountability.

Mobility is not a luxury. It is infrastructure for economic growth, academic exchange, and global engagement. Until Nigeria marries its digital ambition with predictable delivery at a fair, income-sensitive cost, the passport will remain not a gateway to the world, but a wall at our own borders.
