Zenith Bank Plc has released its Group financial results for the half year ending June 2025, posting an impressive profit before tax of N625.629 billion. Following this robust performance, the Board has approved an interim dividend of N1.25 per share, a 25% increase over the N1.00 paid in the first half of 2024, maintaining the Bank’s position as a leading dividend-paying Bank and reinforcing its longstanding commitment to rewarding its esteemed shareholders.

The substantial dividend payout reflects exceptional underlying performance. Despite higher provisioning requirements from the industry-wide exit of the CBN forbearance regime, the Bank recorded a robust 20% year-on-year increase in gross earnings, rising from N2.1 trillion to N2.5 trillion in H1 2025. Interest income drove this performance with an impressive 60% growth, climbing from N1.1 trillion to N1.8 trillion. The Bank achieved this impressive increase in interest income through strategic repricing of risk assets and effective treasury management.

Commenting on the H1 2025 results, Group Managing Director/CEO, Dame Dr. Adaora Umeoji, OON, noted that Zenith Bank’s performance reaffirms the creativity and innovation of our unicorn workforce in a dynamic operating environment. “Despite the huge provisioning requirements as the industry exits the CBN forbearance regime, we’ve seen substantial improvement in our asset quality. Our balance sheet remains robust with adequate capital buffers, positioning us well to seize opportunities across our key markets,” she said.

Building on this strong foundation, the GMD/CEO indicated that the Bank expects to accelerate its growth trajectory in the second half of the year. She assured shareholders that the robust performance, combined with the improved asset quality, positions the Bank to deliver exceptional returns, with expectations of a quantum year-end dividend for 2025. “Our shareholders can look forward to continued value creation as we leverage emerging opportunities and maintain our strategic growth with strong corporate governance culture,” she noted, highlighting the Bank’s track record of improving dividend payments even during challenging periods.

Looking beyond H1 2025, she reinforced her optimistic outlook: “We’re on a solid growth path that we expect to maintain through the rest of 2025 and into 2026. Our focus remains on innovation, digital transformation, and developing solutions that address our clients’ changing needs. With improving market conditions, we’re well placed to sustain this momentum whilst maintaining responsible leadership and delivering exceptional value to all our stakeholders.”
The Bank’s financial performance indicates strong fundamentals in a transitioning macroeconomic environment, with profit after tax reaching N532 billion and earnings per share standing at N12.95 for the period under review. Net interest income demonstrated exceptional growth, surging 90% year-on-year from N715 billion to an impressive N1.4 trillion, whilst non-interest income contributed N613 billion in H1 2025.

The Bank’s total assets expanded to N31 trillion in June 2025, representing steady growth from N30 trillion in December 2024, underpinned by a robust and well-structured balance sheet. Customer confidence remained strong, with deposits growing by 7% from N22 trillion to N23 trillion in June 2025. The loan book stood at N10.2 trillion in June 2025 against N11 trillion in December 2024., reflecting the Bank’s prudent risk management approach.

The Bank delivered strong returns with ROAE at 24.8% and ROAA at 3.5% as at June 2025. The cost-to-income ratio stood at 48.2%, reflecting necessary provisioning for regulatory compliance and the impact of inflationary pressures. Asset quality improved significantly, with the NPL ratio dropping to 3.1% in June 2025 from 4.7% in December 2024. The Bank maintains a fortress balance sheet with capital adequacy at 26% and liquidity ratio at 69%, both comfortably exceeding regulatory requirements.

Zenith Bank’s track record of excellent performance has continued to earn the brand numerous awards including being recognised as the Number One Bank in Nigeria by Tier-1 Capital for the sixteenth consecutive year in the 2025 Top 1000 World Banks Ranking, published by The Banker and “Nigeria’s Best Bank” at the Euromoney Awards for Excellence 2025. Another batch of 70 students are United Kingdom- (UK) bound as the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP) approved their studies abroad.

The students make up the second batch of beneficiaries of PAP scholarship programme.

Otuaro warned the beneficiaries against abandoning their studies in the UK and engaging in anti-social vices and misconducts that could cost them their scholarship education.

The Administrator used the pre-departure event at the Headquarters of PAP in Abuja to thank President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for upholding his promise to the people of Niger Delta.

“I’d like to thank President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he is doing for the Niger Delta people through this Programme. I’d like to thank him for the support he has given to PAP over the years. Also, I’d like to thank the National Security Adviser (NSA) for his huge support.

“I’d like to thank all the management and staff of PAP that made the Programme a success. I appreciate all of you for your support and cooperation.

“The success of PAP is not achieved by just one person, but by all of us. I thank all the critical stakeholders of the Programme who are here and those who are in the communities and creeks of Niger Delta.

“To all the beneficiaries, go to the UK and come back to add values to your community and country. Don’t run away. This is not an opportunity to japa. It is an opportunity to study and gain valuable knowledge that the Niger Delta and Nigeria need.”

Otuaro reiterated that the beneficiaries were carefully selected for the valuable courses they were going abroad to pursue with the scholarship in line with PAP’s deliberate effort aimed at closing the human resource capacity gap in the Niger Delta.

“Today, you have an opportunity. Tomorrow, it will be another person. I don’t want any of you to abuse this opportunity. It is because of past abuses that our opportunities were streamlined to the extent that only the UK is accepting our students now.

“Some people who had opportunities like this were even used against the Programme when they got abroad. Let us make good use of this opportunity for other people to benefit in the future and for the good image of Nigeria,” Otuaro admonished.”

Two persons have been killed during a clash at the signing out celebration of Auchi Polytechnic students Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State.

The celebration took place at a popular hotel and was sponsored by a suspected cult leader in the school, to honour members.

It was gathered that another party was also being held at the same hotel, where a rival confraternity group, was also  celebrating the signing out of some members.

‎Both cult groups, identified as Black Axe Movement and Eiye, were said to have fired gunshots into the air as they exchanged banters.

The celebration, however, took an ugly twist after shots fired into the air hit and damaged a rival member’s ML Mercedes Benz SUV.

‎A witness who simply identified himself as Omorowa said: “The colleagues of the member whose car was hit by bullet, became enraged alleging that the shot was targeted at them.

‎”Though the other group claimed no one was in the said car, but the development led to confrontation between Eiye and the Black Axe movement, otherwise known as Aye.”

‎It was gathered that as the disagreement boiled over, a colleague of the member whose car was damaged, used a car to run over a member of the rival group, leading to the death of one person.

Sources also confirmed that another person was also shot dead in the ensuing chaos.

‎The State Police Command Spokesman, CSP Moses Yamu, who confirmed the incident, however said only one person was killed.

2027: Those Fronting Jonathan  Looking  For Crisis

0
Nyesom Wike and Goodluck Jonathan

By Adesina Soyooye

Minister for the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has accused those rooting for the return of former President Goodluck Jonathan to office in 2027, of deliberately romancing crisis.

Jonathan, an incumbent President, was defeated, under a Peoples Democratic Party Government, in  the 2015 Presidential election by the All Progressives Congress Candidate, then General Muhammadu Buhari.

Buhari’s defeat of Jonathan was seen by not a few as a result of betrayals even from within his party, lies, propaganda, tribal and religious sentiments.

But as the race for the 2027 election gradually heats up, many politicians from across board, including members of the PDP, especially those who betrayed him, and the Coalition of the opposition under the African Democratic Congress, ADC, are suddenly courting him, and rooting for him to stage a come back.

But Wike, one of the few PDP high profile members who stood behind him in 2015, has advised against dragging Jonathan into the race.

Speaking Thursday during an interview with Channels Television, Wike said those fronting Jonathan on the grounds that he, or any Southern candidate will do only one term were only courting crisis and political imbalance.

He wondered why anybody would want to drag Jonathan into the arena when the former President has attained the status of a global citizen and a world statesman.

He also doubted the sincerity of those who want Jonathan now and asked them: What changed?

According to Wike, these are the same people who worked against Jonathan in 2015 and betrayed him, why do they want him now if not to cause political crisis and political imbalance in the country? What changed between now and when they betrayed him?, Wike asked.

Fubara Was Involved In All Resolutions Before State Of Emergency Was Imposed – Wike

Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Nyesom Wike

By Adesina Soyooye

If you were looking for the reason why the now reinstated Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, was not interested in protests against the six months suspension slammed on him, his Deputy and members of the House of Assembly, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has provided it.

If you were disappointed that Fubara had no interest in the activities, press statements, and legal actions against his  suspension, Minister Wike has revealed why.

According to Wike, Fubara was part of the decision to impose the Emergency Rule.  Fubara was part of all the resolutions that led to it before it was imposed.

Speaking Thursday during an interview on Channels Television’s Programme,  Politics Today, Wike disclosed:  “Fubara was involved in all the resolutions before the imposition  of Emergency Rule in the State.

“The claim that the resolutions of the Rivers crisis were in my favor is not true. There was no decision that was taken which the Governor was not aware of.”

No agreement Fubara will serve one term

Wike, also, clarified that no agreement was reached that the Governor would serve for only one term in office. When he was asked if that was the case, Wike quipped: “Who agreed to that? I am hearing this for the first time. I don’t know what you are talking about. We agreed that there should be a democratic Government, at least, at the Local Government level. And this has been done. We are satisfied. Then, we move to the next level.

I will not impose anything on Fubara

Wike also said he will not impose any position or office on Fubara when he was asked if he would, for example impose Commissioners on Fubara. That imposition on Fubara was, allegedly, one of the main reasons for which they fell apart.

It was, alleged, then, that Wike nominated and imposed every appointee on Fubara; that the crisis started, among other reasons, because Fubara dared appoint one Commissioner (Information) without clearance from Wike.

But Wike, insisted  there would be no imposition or interference from him, and said: “I cannot go and impose anything on the Governor. Why would I impose anything on the Governor?  Assuming I go to the Governor and say ‘I want this’, will the State collapse? I will not suggest Commissioners for the Governor. I have no candidate, and I will not.”

On resumption on Thursday, the House of Assembly asked the Governor to submit the names of  new Commissioners for screening- meaning that all the former Commissioners are very likely gone.

Fubara And I  Planned, Agreed On Rivers Local Council Election

Nyesom Wike and Simi Fubara

By Adesina Soyooye

Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, has put a lie to the claims that Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, was not part of the Local Government Election in the State which held on August 30, 2025.

Recall that the Supreme Court of Nigeria had annulled and voided the LG Election held in October 2024, under the supervision of Fubara as Governor.

But given his suspension from office for six months on March 18, 2025, coupled with the annulment of the Election, the Sole Administrator, appointed for the State by President Bola Tinubu, retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, supervised another election conducted by the newly inaugurated  Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, RSIEC after the the sack of RSIEC under Fubara.

In the election, expectedly, given the strong and overwhelming support by Wike for the All Progressives Congress, APC, the Party swept the polls, winning 23 Councils, leaving the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, with three Councils, only.

However, neither Fubara nor his loyalists/supporters, took part in the election. In Fubara’s LGA, Opobo, which was won by the APC, it was like a desert on election day. Voter apathy reigned as it did in most other Councils.

Fubara and company’s absence on election day, triggered the strong belief that Fubara was not carried along, and so indifferent to the exercise.

But speaking Thursday night during a Channels Television’s programme, Politics Today, Minister Wike put a lie to such claims. He said Fubara was carried along all through, and that the two of them met to discuss and agree  on the election.

He disclosed that on the day they agreed to meet and discuss it, the Governor wanted to come to his house, but that he told Fubara that he, Wike, would instead go to him because “you are the Governor.”

Wike also disclosed that Fubara told him in advance that he would not be available on election day due to a family engagement.  He said the Governor’s son had an engagement that day.

Wike: “This is what Nigerians should know: Governor wanted to come and see me. I sad no, you’re the Governor. I drove to the Governor’s house by I.00am.

“I, the former Governor of Rivers State drove to the Governor’s house at 1.00am. I said, ‘Your Excellency, what do we do?’ There’s nothing that was done the Governor wasn’t part of it.

“You see, even before the election, the Governor travelled. He told me he would not be around because his son had this engagement.

“People just sit somewhere, begin to talk all kinds of things they don’t know, simply because, you know, all they were expecting is: ‘oh, they’ve not settled.’ Unfortunately, where people will be collecting money is no longer there.”
