November Convention: PDP Says “Preparatory Train Already In Ibadan,”

Peoples Democratic Party - PDP

By Ayodele Oni

The Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), has affirmed that there is no threat to its November National Convention, scheduled to take place in Ibadan, Oyo state.

The party dismissed insinuations of internal crisis within its fold, affirming that its elective National Convention scheduled for November 15 is on track.

The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Debo Ologunagba, stated this at a news conference in Abuja, saying that all preparations for the convention were on track.

His words: “Let me be clear, the PDP convention will hold as planned. Every chapter is involved, our leaders across the country are working together and preparations are on track. There is no threat to the process.

According to him, “Our members should be rest assured that everything that needs to be done, they’re being done and in very seamless way.

“We are moving all over the country towards the Ibadan. Indeed, the preparatory train is already in Ibadan,” he said.

Ologunagba also dismissed the speculations of internal disagreements within the party National Working Committee (NWC) members, following separate conflicting letters written to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on the party’s state congress in Cross River and Akwa Ibom.

He explained that what some perceived as conflict was merely democracy in action, noting that PDP is a party that debates and resolves issues through its constitution.

He maintained that the leadership requires responsibility, and the constitution is clear on the roles of the party officers, adding that when anybody has the opportunity and the privilege of being a leader in the party, the minimum expected was responsibility.

He emphasized that Section 35 of the party’s constitution provides for the office of the national chairman, including the power to assign responsibilities, call for and preside over National Executive Committee, the national caucus and the NWC meetings.

“The national chairman provides overall leadership and can summon meetings, while the national secretary carries out administrative duties such as issuing notices and keeping records.

“The secretary cannot unilaterally call meetings or release statements without approval. Some of the confusion seen in public stems from either ignorance or deliberate mischief.”

On the party state congress in Cross River, Ologunagba insisted that the NWC had already suspended the congress, while it also directed the South-South Caretaker Committee to take responsibility of the party affairs on the state.

On the issue concerning the Akwa Ibom chapter of PDP, Ologunagba maintained that the party has taken clear decisions which “stand,” and warned against any individual attempting to act outside the party’s authority.

“Our constitution does not allow anyone to belong to two parties at once and we will not tolerate actions that undermine unity.

“The meeting that produced the party’s position was properly convened, with records and videos to prove it. Anyone claiming otherwise is misleading the public,” he said.

Reacting to President Bola Tinubu’s Independence Day broadcast, the PDP spokesperson described it as uninspiring and disappointing with claims not reflecting the reality Nigerians face including cost of living and security challenge.

The PDP publicity secretary also demanded transparency on the use of funds claimed to be saved from the subsidy removal.

Ologunagba  described the announced N25, 000 cash transfers as an ineffective solution, arguing that “handouts do not build an economy.”

He advocated for true reforms through policies like tax breaks for home renovation, which he said would stimulate production and create jobs, rather than token payments that deepen poverty and dependence.

He said that the PDP remains the only truly democratic party committed to providing the leadership that Nigeria needed.

Breaking: Anglican Communion Worldwide, Appoints A Female The Archbishop of Canterbury

Bishop Sarah Mullally

By Adesina Soyooye

In a historic move in the history of the Anglican Communion Worldwide, a woman has been appointed to lead the Church.

The Church of England (Anglican Church) in a move that has left millions of jaws ajar,  many more numb, and others excited, on Friday, September 3, named Bishop Sarah Mullally as the new Archbishop of Canterbury.

This means that Mullally will lead the over 85 million Anglicans Worldwide. This marks the first time in more than 1,400 years that a woman will hold the revered and influential and highly spiritual position in the Anglican Church.

The appointment makes Mullally the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury. The 63-year old will hold  the office and take on the role of spiritual leader for the over 85 million Anglicans Worldwide.

Mullally, who succeeds Archbishop Justin Welby, who stepped aside voluntarily in November 2024 over a report which criticised his handling of historic se*ual abuse allegations connected to Christian summer camps, years before his appointment, has been the Bishop of London since 2018.

The new Archbishop of Canterbury, before getting entrenched in Church leadership, worked as a Cancer Nurse. She later occupied the high profile position of  England’s Chief Nursing Officer.

Known as an advocate for women’s rights within the Church, she has long been  a leading voice for reform.

Her appointment did not quite take many in the Church hierarchy by surprise. In deed, she and two other women were on the shortlist of potential candidates.

This appointment marks a landmark moment in Anglican history and likely to test unity across the worldwide Communion, especially, in Africa, Asia and Latin America which maintain more conservative positions than the Church of England.

House Of Reps Minority Leader, Chinda Rushes To Court To Stop His Removal

0

The discontent among opposition lawmakers in the House of Representatives has taken a new turn as Minority Leader, Hon. Kingsley Chinda, has rushed to court in a bid to stop moves to remove him from office. His leadership has been fingered as one of the reasons the legislature is being tagged as a ‘rubber stamp’ to the executive.

This brewing crisis was fueled by perceived compromises by the minority leadership in the 10th Assembly. And there has been rumours of moves among opposition lawmakers to demand for the removal of the embattled leaders when the House resumes from its vacation next Tuesday, October 7.

The minority leadership under Chinda has been accused of being overly cozy with the All Progressives Congress (APC) government, thus rendering them ineffective in holding the ruling party accountable for pressing issues like crippling hardship, rampant insecurity, and widespread corruption.

The lawmakers’ reluctance to speak out has sparked public outcry, eroding trust in the opposition’s ability to provide robust oversight.

Specifically, Chinda has been accused of failing to convene a single Minority Caucus meeting since the inauguration of the 10th House of Representatives over two years ago. Additionally, he has been criticized for granting media interviews that contradict the collectively agreed position of the PDP, and for allowing the Minority Caucus to be perceived as a lame duck Assembly.

Instead of addressing these allegations with his colleagues, Hon. Chinda has rather opted to take the matter to court, naming the National Assembly, House of Representatives, the Clerk, the Speaker and all minority parties, as defendants, in a move many see as an attempt to stall his potential removal, bordering on self-preservation, rather than the collective good of the legislature and essence of opposition voice in a democracy.

He alleged in the court documents that the move against him stems from his close association with Nyesom Wike, the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Governor of Rivers State, who is notably the only PDP member in President Bola Tinubu’s APC-led cabinet.

Some of the opposition lawmakers say that the development appears to be a classic case of the guilty fearing accountability. By rushing to court, Hon. Chinda may be attempting to buy time and stall the removal process, allowing the Minority Leadership to mobilize resources to compromise the process.

Already, it’s alleged that some members, especially from PDP and Labour Party are being wooed with between $2000 and $5000 not to endorse the removal of the Minority Leader.

In a court document dated September 15, 2025, Hon. Chinda is seeking an injunction to restrain the defendants (the National Assembly, House of Representatives, Speaker of the House, all minority parties and Clerk of the House) and their agents from removing him as Minority Leader of the House of Representatives.

Despite this, opposition lawmakers have expressed concerns that the current minority leadership’s apparent compromise and collusion with the ruling party undermine their ability to provide effective oversight and hold the government accountable. This has raised doubts about their commitment to genuine opposition objectives and the interests of the people.

Former Senator Elisha Abbo, who represented Adamawa North Senatorial District in the 9th and beginning of the 10th Senate, has debunked reports  that he is detained at the Nigeria Police Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) in Abuja following allegation of ra*ing a minor leveled against him.

The Adamawa State born former Lawmaker also denied reports linking him to ra*ing a 13-year-old Secondary School pupil in June this 2025.

The media was awash Thursday with reports linking the embattled former Senator to the alleged crime, and so, in Police custody over it.

In a swift reaction on Friday in Abuja, Senator Abbo refuted the allegation in its entirety, describing it as baseless, unfounded and mischievous.

Abbo said he was in his Abuja residence (Katampe extension) throughout Thursday and not within a police station, let alone police custody.

He said, “The said report is handiwork of my political detractors. It is an orchestrated smear campaign to disturb my peace by political enemies.”

He however admitted that he recently reported desperate move of a female money monger in his direction to the Police who requested for N5million from him.

“I personally reported the desperate female money monger to the Nigeria Police Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), where both of us were later invited for questioning, only for me to be reading or hearing completely different story several weeks after now.”

He, however, did not disclose why the woman was blackmailing him or the outcome of the Police invitation.

The former Senator had been involved in a string of scandals and controversies a couple of times in his political career.

In 2019, Abbo made national headlines after a viral video showed him assaulting a woman at an adult shop in Abuja, just as he was also previously accused of attempting to blackmail a married woman with an alleged adult tape.

Nigerians Groan As Price Of Cooking Gas Skyrockets

Cooking Gas Cylinder

By Akinwale Kasali

Nigerians are lamenting the scarcity of Liquified Petroleum Gas, LPG, popular as Cooking Gas, and its astronomical increase from N1,050 per kg to N1,800.

It has increased by 34.6 percent on a Week-on-Week basis, to N18,500 this week, from N13,150 for 12.5 kg the previous week.

These developments are driven by factors like increased import dependence, poor distribution infrastructure, and a weakened Naira.

The situation has led to lifestyle changes, with some households reverting to less healthy cooking methods like firewood, despite government efforts to boost domestic supply.

The rising prices is presently causing financial strain for many households and small businesses.

Checks  confirm that the price of 1kg currently retails at N1,750, N1,800 and N2,000 depending on the location.

Major depots in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State have closed shops as they complain of non availability of the product.

Most vendors in Ogun State that opened shops in some neighbourhoods jacked up the price by selling at N1,600 per kilogram instead of N1,150 as sold last week.

Adejoke Ibikunle, said there was a long queue for cooking gas in one of the gas stations in Ibafo, Ogun State despite the fact that it was sold for N1,500.

Lamenting the situation, Joke Banjo, a trader at Agege, said she was searching everywhere to refill her 12kg cylinder, but could not find any until she got to Ojodu.

She said she managed to refill her 6kg cylinder before the station stopped selling due to long queue.

She expressed displeasure over the issue, wondering what would have happened to the supply of cooking gas.

The non availability of the product and the increase in the price of the product according to Olatunbosun Oladapo, the National President of the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers is “as a result of the industrial action by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN, adding that it affected the supply value chain majorly in the South-West”.

He further noted that Gas is majorly a business of demand and supply, when there is limited supply of the product, the demand would be high, thereby result to hike in price.

Oladapo added that, “As at the time PENGASSAN embarked on the strike, all gas plants were shutdown, most gas plants have limited supply. Dangote, our major supplier in terms of availability and affordability of the product, is yet to release loading invoice to our members who have pending products with the company for more than three weeks forcing marketers to buy from other competitors at a high rate.

“Other competitors, took advantage of the challenges most of our marketers are facing with Dangote and also the industrial action to increase their price.

“No marketer will want want to leave his plant empty, therefore, they buy from these competitors.

“We appeal to Dangote to truck out product to more marketers as this will enhance the supply. We are hopeful the price will drop in the coming weeks,” he added.

According to Energy expert, Tunde Mukthar,

“Nigeria relies heavily on imports for cooking gas, making its price vulnerable to international inflation and exchange rate fluctuations”.

Mukthar added that the inefficient distribution networks and high transportation costs, particularly to rural areas, increase the final price for consumers, leading to the astronomical increase of the product.

He added that the weakening value of the Nigerian Naira against other currencies increases the cost of imported gas and related expenses like freight and insurance.

Meanwhile, energy industry analyst, Yemisi Olagunju, has  also raised the alarm that Nigeria may be on the verge of a domestic LPG supply crunch.

Speaking  during the 2025 National LPG Conference  and Exhibition in Lagos, Olagunju insisted that the Minister’s directive must be enforced to stop the outflow of LPG from Nigeria.

“The domestic market does not have sufficient volumes of gas, so there is no justification for exporting the product out of the country by the IOCs”, Olagunju stated.

He said IOCs have consistently argued that they lack the facilities to separate propane from butane, a requirement for making the product more suitable for domestic use.

She stated that these companies had previously requested a timeframe to put such facilities in place, yet there has been no enforcement or monitoring by government agencies to ensure compliance.

“Companies prefer to export these products abroad to make more money,” he said, stressing that the practice undermines Nigeria’s domestic LPG market, which still struggles with insufficient supply.

She urged the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) and the Minister of State for Gas to compel the IOCs to establish the required infrastructure for propane-butane separation.

It would be recalled that the FG place a ban on gas exports, that waa announced in 2024 to boost domestic availability, but many Nigerians report that the intended price relief has not been realized.

Ekiti 2026: Governor Oyebanji’s Aides Resign Ahead Of APC Primary

Governor Oyebanji and His Aides Regisnation Letters

By Akinwale Kasali

Very close to the  Governorship Primary of the Ekiti State All Progressives Congress, APC,  two trusted Aides of the Governor, Biodun Oyebanji have, inexplicably, resigned.

The latest resignees are Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Employment, Sunday Oguntuase and  member, Ekiti State Microfinance and Enterprise Development Agency, Shina Olawale Ogunleye.

The development is coming less than a month to the APC Governorship Primary Election slated for October 27, 2025.

The two letters by Oguntuase and Ogunleye dated September 25, 2025 and October 1, 2025, respectively,  addressed to the Governor, cited personal reasons and family commitments as reasons behind their actions.

Recall that more than 10 aides of Governor Oyebanji , including a member, Ekiti State Waste Management Board, Hon. Wale Ade -Oba, Senior Special Assistants on Solid Minerals, and Traffic management, Dada Abiodun John and Isreal Adesokan (Jaru), respectively, among others have tendered their resignation letters in the last two months.

One of Oyebanji’s former aides, Ade -Oba, immediately after his resignation publicly pledged to work with another APC Governorship Aspirant, Engr. Kayode Ojo to realise his Governorship ambition.

Hon. Alade -Oba, through a statement in Ado Ekiti, expressed readiness to work with Ojo to develop the State after the alleged failure of Governor Oyebanji to perform despite the availability of huge allocations.

His words: “I’m writing to share with you a personal decision that may surprise many. As you know, I’ve been serving as an appointee under the current administration led by Governor Biodun Oyebanji (BAO). However, after much reflection, I’ve decided to join forces with Engr. Kayode Ojo, a leader with a vision for a better Ekiti.”

The politician accused the Governor of underperforming despite what he described as the highest allocations to the State in the history of Ekiti Governors.

He further said, “I believe the administration hasn’t delivered meaningful development to many local government areas, including mine – Irepodun/Ifelodun. The Governor’s office seems to revolve around just a few individuals, leaving many Commissioners without meaningful assignments.

“Our party members are being overlooked and undervalued despite their hard work and dedication to the party’s success. Instead, opposition party members who didn’t contribute to our victory are being appointed to key positions, while our loyal supporters are being ignored.

“The Governor is often out of the State, pursuing unclear agendas, and this absence is felt in the lack of productivity under the present administration. I believe it’s time for a change.

“Engr. Kayode Ojo’s leadership style and vision for Ekiti resonate with me. I believe his administration would prioritize the needs of our people, recognize the efforts of our party members, and drive development across all local government areas.

“In conclusion, I’m making this change because I want to be part of a government that truly serves the people of Ekiti and values the contributions of its loyal supporters. I’m willing to work towards a brighter future for our state, and I invite you to join me on this journey”, he stated.

“In The Name Of God And Ancestors Of  Ancient Benin Kingdom, I Urge Benins To Reject The Imposition Of Iyaloja” – Senator Uzamere

Senator Ehigie Uzamere,

By Ayodele Oni

“In Benin culture, market leadership is not a political creation or an external imposition. It is a deeply rooted institution governed by tradition and sanctioned by the Oba of  Benin” – Uzamere Warns Tinubu’s Daughter

Ehigie Uzamere, a former Senator who represented Edo South in 2007, has said that the Iyaloja title is alien to the culture and tradition of Benin.

His reaction is coming as voices continue to rise against Mrs. Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, daughter of President Bola Tinubu and the Iyaloja General of Nigeria over her move to install Madam Josephine “Otagbogbo” Ibhaguezejele, as the head of market women in Edo State.

The Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, joined by the market women made it clear to Mrs Tinubu-Ojo, that the title, Iyaloja, is strange to Benin tradition.

Senator Ehijie Uzamere, citing some historical facts maintained that: “The Coronation Of “Iyaloja Of Edo State Market Association” By Chief (Mrs.) Folashade Tinubu-Ojo is a cultural misstep.

“To understand why this move has unsettled many in Benin City, Edo State, one must revisit the cultural and historical foundations of market leadership within the Edo South Senatorial District, otherwise known as the Benin Kingdom.

“In Benin culture, market leadership is not a political creation or an external imposition. It is a deeply rooted institution governed by tradition and sanctioned by the Oba of Benin.

“Market leaders, traditionally, known as Iy’Ikhueki or Iyeki, are selected by the market women themselves and later confirmed and blessed by the Oba, the revered custodian of Edo culture.

“Once confirmed, the Iyeki becomes the custodian of market traditions and the cultural representative of the Oba within that marketplace.

“This tradition is centuries old and must be spared from the corrupting influence of Nigerian politics. Each market in the Benin Kingdom functions independently, with its own Iyeki.

“There is no overarching ‘Iyaloja of Edo State,’ as markets are decentralized in their leadership, anchored in the customs of their respective communities, and collectively tied to the authority of the Oba of Benin.

“The title Iyaloja, popular in parts of Western Nigeria, is not indigenous to Benin tradition, and the word Iyaloja is not found in the Benin language lexicon. While respected in its place of origin, it is culturally alien to Edo State.

“Attempts to superimpose this title over Benin markets not only ignores historical reality, but also distorts the carefully preserved traditional structures that define market leadership in the Kingdom.

“The Iyeki is not a political figure but a custodian of culture. She safeguards rituals, resolves disputes, maintains harmony among traders, and represents the Oba’s spiritual presence in the market. Her authority flows from the Oba, not from associations or external influences.

“It is important to stress that market leadership in Benin is inseparably tied to the sacred authority of the palace. To tamper with this order is to tamper with the cultural soul of the people.

“Just as no external body can appoint Palace Chiefs in Benin, so too can no external association impose leadership on Edo markets. The palace remains the singular source of legitimacy, and its role can not be substituted or replicated by any outside influence.

“The coronation of an ‘Iyaloja of Edo State’ by an external body, raises serious cultural and constitutional concerns:

It disregards the Oba’s sacred role in confirming market leaders, undermining centuries of cultural practice.

“It politicizes an institution that has always been neutral, risking division and unrest among market women.

The concept of Iyaloja belongs to another cultural context; transplanting it into Edo South amounts to cultural encroachment and disrespect.

“The markets of Edo South are not merely centers of trade; they are cultural spaces tied to the identity and heritage of the Benin people.

“The attempt to impose a non-traditional title upon them disrespects this heritage and risks creating unnecessary tension between modern associations and age-old customs.

“In the name of God and the ancestors of the ancient  Benin Kingdom, I urge Benins to reject the imposition of Iyaloja on our market women in Edo South.

“For centuries, the Oba of Benin has been the fountain of cultural legitimacy. Any deviation from this order threatens not just the stability of market leadership but also the dignity of the traditions that define the Benin Kingdom.

“The coronation of an ‘Iyaloja of Edo State Market Association’ by Chief (Mrs.) Folashade Tinubu-Ojo is not only culturally misplaced, but also potentially a disruptive move.

“Market leadership in Edo South is the prerogative of the Oba of Benin, exercised through the recognition and confirmation of Iyeki selected by the traders themselves.

“For the sake of peace, harmony, and respect for cultural heritage, stakeholders must recognize and honour the boundaries of culture and tradition.

“Edo South markets must remain what they have always been: sacred cultural and economic spaces, guided by the Oba of Benin and safeguarded by the Iyeki.

“Only Omonoba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II N’Ogidigan, wears a crown in Benin City. Not an Iyaloja, not any other human being.

“Torghobaghase – only the words from the Oba of Benin when it concerns the culture and traditions of the Benin people must come to pass and be respected.”

Iyaloja Title: Edo PDP Asks Gov. Okpebholo To Apologize To Oba Of  Benin

0
Governor Monday Okpebholo

By Ayodele Oni

“Tradition not bargaining chips for political expediency”

Indications have emerged that despite opposition and criticism which trailed the idea of the  installation of Iyaloja General Title in Benin City, Edo State, Josphine Isi Ibhaguezejele, has been inaugurated.

The Palace of the Oba of Benin, Ewuare 11, and prominent Benin Indigenes, including market women, had kicked against the Iyaloja title to superintend over all markets in Edo State by President Bola Tinubu’s first daughter, Mrs. Folashade Tinubu-Ojo.

Report indicate that the President’s daughter has  inaugurated Ibhaguezejele who had earlier been rejected not just by the Palace but by traders as well.

The installation, which reportedly took place at the Edo State Government House on Thursday, and attended by the Director, office of the First Lady, Edo State, Mrs. Edesili Anani, implied that it had the blessing of Governor Monday Okpebholo.

This may likely put the Governor on a collision course with the Palace like his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki.

It was gathered that the move towards the inauguration of Iyaloja General in Edo State began in 2024 when President Tinubu’s daughter wrote a letter to the Benin Monarch to that effect.

The letter, written by  Chief (Mrs) Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, the Iyaloja-General of Nigeria and first daughter of President Bola Tinubu, has surfaced online, deepening the controversy over the installation of a new market leader in Edo State.

The letter, dated April 30, 2024, and acknowledged by the Benin Traditional Council on May 1, was addressed to His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II.

In the letter, Tinubu-Ojo stated: “With greatest sense of responsibility and utmost regards to our Royal Father, His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo Oba Ewuare II, the Oba of Benin, I humbly write to introduce Pastor Mrs. Josephine Isi Ibhaguezejele as the Edo State Iyeki-Elect.”

“With the development, it is her responsibility to see to the day-to-day affairs of the traders in the State (Edo State).

“Your Majesty, I humbly request that you give your daughter every necessary backing to succeed in this great and noble assignment as I look forward to your fatherly blessing for her to be fruitful in her newly assigned responsibilities.”

Meanwhile, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), sensing the involvement of Governor Okpebholo in the process, has advised him to tender an apology to the Benin Monarch.

In a press statement, signed by the State Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Dan Osa-Ogbegie, the party demanded an “explicit apology to the Oba of Benin and to the good people of Edo State from the office of the Governor and from any official involved in organising the event.”

It called for an independent review of the role of the First Lady’s Office and Government House protocol “in staging events affecting Benin cultural institutions”, with findings to be made public.

PDP also called for a meeting between the Palace and the State Government to reaffirm the Palace’s custodial role over native customs and market institutions and a formal undertaking that no future inauguration, appointment, or public recognition of market leaders would take place without prior consultation and confirmation by the Palace, as required by custom.

“No one individual or government, has the right to usurp the custodial functions of the Oba. Any attempt to create parallel or “general” market leadership structures that undermine the Palace-confirmed order will be resisted by Edo people at home and in the Diaspora.

“Governor Okpebholo and his appointees must explain themselves. The people of Edo deserve to know who authorised or facilitated the event in Government House, and under whose instruction the Palace was disrespected,” Ogbegie stated.

The PDP image maker stated clearly that “Edo is not for sale. Our traditions are not bargaining chips for political expediency or a stage for partisan showmanship. They violated the dignity of the Oba Palace and the people it represents,” Ogbegie said.
