2019: Buhari Still Blames Obasanjo and Babangida For Nigeria Woes.

0

By Stephen Ubanna

President Muhammadu Buhari may  find it an uphill task to convince Olusegun Obasanjo a former President and  Ibrahim Babangida, a retired Army General and former military President to support his re-election bid in the 2019 general election This is because of the constant attacks on the duo as having impoverished the country  and their refusal to provide  basic infrastructural facilities in the country  when  the resources was available to execute such projects  without blinking an eyelid.

Buahari, had accused the duo of  having  wasted  the enormous  foreign exchange revenue of the country during their years in office.  The aggrieved President had declared  that if the former political leaders had invested wisely on  infrastructural development  of the country, things could not have been all that too bad.  He noted that Nigeria had the money and human capital that could have turned things around in the country if they had  invested on Infrastructure.

The President may have spoken his mind about duo through Yemi Osinbajo, the Vice President  at Minnesota, United States recently . Armed with official data obtained from the ministry of Finance, Osinbajo  who was rechoing the President’s voice had said  that between 190 and 1998, which falls between the period Babangida and late General Sani  ruled , the country  realised  about $200 million as against  $140.1 billion  got  between 199 and 2009 under the thenPresident Obasanjo and late Musa Yar’Adua Administrations.  Osinbajo also  disclosed  that the Jonathan Administration   generated about $381 million between 2010 and 2014 from oil sales. An angry Vice President was said to have told his listeners that  the former political leaders did not effectively utilise the funds to build on infrastructure in the country.

But political associates of Bangida in particular, may not have  found the  assessment  of the Administration by  Osinbajo funny. Mohammed Jallo, a  former  National Chairman of  the  defunct National Democratic Party, NDP, had  lambasted   Obasanjo for opening his mouth too wide to abuse Babangida nd Obasanjo , who had contributed meaningfully to the infrastructural development of the country.

Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, rtd: Accused of neglecting The Nation’s Infrastructural Development

He disclosed that Babangida set the stage for the infrastructural development in of Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, including the building of Aso Rock, the Seat of power in Nigeria. He also cited other projects that were executed by  Administration  with the country’s oil revenue which included the third Mainland bridge in Lagos, and the Epe power plant. This is in addition to Federal Housing projects , scatered in various parts of Lagos state and the dualisation of Federal roads in the state ‘  The Babangida Administration, he disclosed was also responsible in financing the building of the Nigeria National Petroleum, NNPC,  Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN,  Nigeria Development Insurance Corporation, NDIC, Corporate Headquarters in Abuja.  The aggrieved politician  further cited the multi-million  naira Shiroro, Kanji  and Gembu Dams in Niger, then military President home state. It  was also to the credit of the Administration to have built the Kaduna  Refinery and Petrochemical Company and the Nigeria Liquefied Natural  Gas plant in Bonny, Rivers state. It was not surprising why the Administration was  regarded in both official and unofficial circles as Nigeria’s ”golden era of infrastructural development”.   He was said to have challenged Buhari and Osin bajo to point at  one  project the  Administration had built in the last three  years  instead of pointing accusing fingers on past Administrations for its woes.  ”Everybody in APC wants to be a leader. They want to be President, they want to be governors, they have no plan for Nigeria and the people”, he said.

Interestingly, the same past  political and military leaders, Buhahari had described as failures in their years in office are the same people he needs their support to actualise his re-election bid in  the 2019 general election bid. He was  said  to have sent Orji Uzor Kalu, a former governor of Abia state, and now Chieftain of APC, to Babangida, the former military President at his hill top country home in Minna last   September. It was learnt the politician had met with the statesman behind closed doors  to discuss the Buhari re-election project. The Abia politician who could not hide his mission of being in Niger state said he was in the state  to solicit Babangida’s support for President Buhari’s  re-election bid.  He boasted that he was convinced  of his support  in office to  Buhari in 2019  to finish his second tenure in office.

The Katsina state born  politician and President Federal Republic of Nigeria, was said to have sent another group to Obasanjo’s country home at Otta, Ogun state. The Magazine learnt that the team had entered into  the former President’s Otta home and requested to have  a closed door audience with him but was turned  down.

It was gathered that Obasanjo had asked the Buhari emissaries to disclose their mission of coming to see him before his visitors but kept quiet.  A source privy to the visit disclosed that Obasanjo left the entourage  to another  room where he had  a private political meeting with  a set of politicians  who had visited him.

Eye-witness account disclosed that  when he came out of the meeting and the Aso Rock visitors were still waiting for him , he joking asked : You have not gone, you are still around. The Buhari foot soldiers were forced to leave when it became obvious that the former President would not grant them audience.

Babangida and Obasanjo were central to Buhari’s victory in the 2015 general election and may have made up their mind  to withdraw their support from him in  2019 because of their estranged relationship.

This is evident going by the responseS of Babangida to Kalu’s plead for support for Buhari re-election bid. According to him, Babangida ‘s response to his appeals to support the incumbent President’s re-election bid was ” blue and white”.  Kanu , who was never hot of words  to say  when cornered for an interview with Journalists   volunteered ”we have discussed and he said he is thinking about it, ” stressing that” February 16, 2019  is still a long way to go” as to make any commitment to any politician.  Babangia may have tactically spoken the mind of Obasanjo  other retired military Generals when he said  ”we will continue to talk” without making a categorical statement of  going to back him up.

It would be recalled that in the 2015 general election, Buhari   had visited Obasanjo, Babangida and Theophilous Danjuma, a retired Army General and former Chief of Army Staff and  whoalso served as  former President Obasanjo’s minister of Defense to solicit for their support. He never sent any foot soldier  to these statesmen  to solicit their support. Take his visit to Babangida’s hilltop home where the duo made rib cracking jokes :” old Generals  never die”. All that jokes  appear to have gone as Buhari may not have  seen any need to solicit for their as he believes  he could win the 2019 Presidential election  without their support because of his alleged  achievements which is there for people to see.

Bukola Saraki, Senate President and and one  of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, Presidential Aspirants in the 2019 general election  fears that Nigeria would be more divided than ever  if the Katsina born politician  is re-elected in   2019.  He noted that at present the country was not united under him, insisting that  what the country need now is someone who could  make everybody  feel a sense of belonging. Attahiru Bafarawa, a former governor of Sokoto state and another PDP,  Presideential Aspirant said it would be wrong for  anyone to canvass for support for Buhari Presidential ambition, with the”damaged the economy” while he watches with his economic management team.

Notwithstanding the retired  Army Generals and other political allies withdrawal of  their support to Buhari in the 2019 general election, Nuhu Rbadu, a former  Chairman  of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC,  who contested the 2011 Presidential election on the platform of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, said” it would in the best  interest of the country  for Buhari to win the 2019 general election. He described  the Administration ant-corruption  war  as the most difficult job to do , adding that  ”it takes a man of integrity  to make a success of it”.

But the fear that Buhari of the ruling APC may want to win the 2019 Presidential election at all costs may have sent a wrong signal to the international Community that Nigeria may disintegrate . Abdulsalami Abubakar, a retired Army General and former Head of State  shares the same view .

At a recent  maiden lecture  orgagnised  by the Staff  and Students of Abubakar  Post Graduate  Students’ Hall of University of Ibadam,  titled  ” Collaborative peace Building  in Nigeria” , the former Head of State  cautioned politicians  against disrupting 2019 general elections, saying ”we have no other country to run to should the country be engulfed on fire”.  He noted that ” no matter how good those managing the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC  are, if things are  well managed as they are , it might be difficult  to have  a credible election in 2019”.

Appealing to oliticians to be  conciliatory in their relationship and utterances , he stressed  that it is the only way  to have acceptable election results in 2019.

Anti-smuggling: WMC Seizures, As Kidnappers Dare officers At A Zamfara Checkpoint

By Stephen Ubanna

Binga Olofinyilola, a former Deputy Comptroller, Administrations,  Federal Operations Unit, FOU, Zone B, Kaduna , may not have done his home work well before jumping at the offer  over his  first  major deployment as a Comptroller   to take over Western Marine Command, Apapa , Lagos from Sarki-Kebbi, who took over at FOU, Zome B.

Unknown to Olofinyilola , he was coming to a Command which had been  operational tools, particular, patrol  Crafts to contain the activities of waterways smugglers in the six states in the south west geo-political region:Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun Ekiti and Ondo.

Past and Present Comptroller Generals of the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, were said to have made  no effort to equip the Western and Eastern Marine Commands, the two Amphibious Commands of the Service  to effectively tackle the activities of waterways smugglers who are  equipped with sophisticated weapons for  operations .

Investigation by the Magazine shows that Premium Motor Spirits, PMS, popular petrol, which have continued to be smuggled into Republic of Benin  from Nigeria while  foreign parboiled rice and  second hand clothing are smuggled  into Nigeria  as  the Western Marine Command, WMC,  or Eastern Marine Command based in Port Harcourt, have no answer to the Water ways smugglers.

Usman Bello: Kanwan Katsina III: Advises Customs officer To Stop Smuggling Of Rice

Investigation by the Magazine  shows that two Customs Amphibious  Command have insufficient operation Crafts to patrol the Coastal waters from the East or western of the nation . The situation was so bad in the south west that that the Command  could boast  only of one patrol Craft. That much was confirmed by Binga , the Comptroller.

The Magazine learnt from the onset he  had made the officers understand that he was out to learn from them.  It was gathered he did not keep his distance away from the officers  as he waas  always  in regular Consultations with them, particular, Adamu Mohammed, the Command, Deputy Comptroller, Enforcement.  The relationship between the duo, according to a source, had been very Cordial  as the Comptroller could  hardly stay  alone without Adamu by his side for one operational meeting or the other, a soruce told Magazine. This is because the Comptroller  do not want to been seen as running the Command  alone as was the case by former Comptrollers of the Command which resulted in operational failures as  waterways continue to outsmart the officers on their way to deliver their smuggled goods to their sponsors either in Nigeria or Republic of Benin.

The Magazine  learnt that the Contraband seizures that had been made  in the last one month by the Command  was not without the support of the Navy officers who mobilised their patrol boats  into the sea to give the Command officers security support. This is evident with the recent Ijofin operation in Ogun state, in which the Command , was contacted by Aliyu Mohammed, Comptroller, Federal Operations Unit, FOU, Zone A, to mobilise its  patrol Craafts into the sea to contain the activities petrol smugglers. Given that the Command has only one operational patrol Craft in the whole of the south west, the Navy became the alternative source of support.   With the Navy support,  the Command  was able to take over the Ijofin axis  leading to the sea and all the  locally built boats  carrying  the smuggled Jerry Cans of ”25”  petrol   were evacuated  to the Command waterfront  at the Apapa office Complex.

Eye witness account disclosed that the  locally  built boats   were loaded  with about 15,000 kegs  of 30 litres  of petro each and which had been aushered to the general public including security operatives on the advice of Mohammed, the FOU, Zone A, Comptroller and the arrowhead of the Ijofin operations. The Comptroller  had put the Duty Paid Value, DPV, of the ”30” litres keg of petrol evacuated  to the Command with the local bults at N81 million. True to his promise to his FOU, Zone A  counterpart that the boats would be destroyed after  evacuation of the kegs of petrol, it had been destroyed  with the use of labourers hired  for the job.

Many believe that without the involvement of the Navy, the Ijofin operations may have flopped as  the smugglers were well equipped to contain any Customs attack both on land and  sea to be able to smuggle the product into Republic of Benin through the Ijofin Creek.

A senior Customs officer informed the Magazine that the Ijofin operation was just one of the many operations supervised by Binga since he assumed duties about a month  ago.  Emaanuel Tangwa, an Assistant Superintendent  and the Command image maker  confirmed that barely four days in office , Adamu mobilised his patrol team officers had made massive seizures of  Cannabis, popular , India Hemp along Badagry Creeks, thus signalling a challenging mission for him in the Command. The seizures included 800 ”50” bags of Thailand parboiled rice each. There are  many Creeks in Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Sokoto ,used by the Smugglers to carry out their nefarious activities , which needed to be fully expored by the WMC officers, as an Amphibious Command.

It would be recalled that Riks Lura, a Chief Superintendent of Customs and the officer and the FOU, Zone A, officer  in-charge of the Command Operations and Lagos Roving team was said to have disarmed at different times  some  rice smugglers who  had entered Oyingbo  and Ekre Creeks in Lagos and Ogun states respectively . the water ways smuggllers were said to have been  dispossessed  of Thousands bags of foreign parboiled rice of ”50” each.  The seizures were said to have b een made  early this year by the Command without the support of the officers of the WMC, the Navy or the Marine police. The  seizure was a lesson to the smugglers that the game  was up and hiding place for any category of smugglers  either by land or Creek or sea.

Maritime analysts believe that if Hameed Ali, a retired Colonel and Comptroller General, Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, could adequately mobilise the two Amphibious  Commands of the service to police the  nation’s Coastal waters , the FOU, Zone A, operation and Lagos Roving team other teams would be freed of the troubles of extending their operations of running after smugglers in to the Creeks but  concentrate on the land to  contain their activities and force them out of the illegal business .

But Binga, the WMC,  Comptroller, has assured Nigerians  that they have no cause to worry about these waterways smugglers  as his  officers are equal to the task. He disclosed that the seizures that had been made in the Command in the recent  time at Idiroko, Yekeme and Badagry Creeks was a clear indication that the waterways smugglers are in for trouble if they do no not change their  old ways of doing business in the country,  insisting that  more ” seizures  of Contraband will be made”  between now and the tail end  of Decemeber 20, 2018.

But the anti-smuggling  situation in the far north  may not  be as rigorous in the far north as in the southern part of Nigeria. This is evident going by the call of Usma Bello, a retired Comptroller of Customs and now Kanwan Katsina III to the officers  when Oyeleke Abdullaziz, Comptroller of Kaduna/Katsina Command  called on  in his  Palace at Ketare.  The retired Customs Comptroller  could not hide his feelings when he  urged officers and men of the Nigeria Customs Service  to ”double their efforts  in curtailing the  smuggling of prohibited goods, particular rice and poultry products into the country to enhance the service revenue generation. Bello noted that with  the heavy investment  in the anchor borrower scheme  for rice production  and other agricultural programs, smuggling of foreign parboiled rice from  the nation’s porous borders  must stop.

An angry Traditional ruler declared that  if smuggling of foreign parboiled rice  will be allowed  to continue, it will affect the government on Agriculture and local rice production. Bello is in a better position to advise the Customs anti-smuggling personnel  in the north and the country in general to sit up to  contain the activities of  Smugglers as an insider  who  retired as a Comptroller.  Smuggling of rice , vegetable oil and poultry products  remain a regular phenomenon in the north as the Customs personnel appears to be collaborators. Areas in the region where  Customs personnel appear to be alive to their duties, the smugglers and youths of the Communities had been very hostile to them. Take for instance the recent incident at Zamfara state in the north west geo-political region where  two officers were allegedly kidnapped at a Customs Checkpoint as others ran for their safety even with the AK 47  in their hand.  Sources told the Magazine that  the kidnappers are  demanding for millions of naira  before the officers could be released. The kidnap of the alleged two officers may have put the officers  in the north and the country in general on the red alert at their respective duty post.

Importers Under Close Watch At Shenzhi Port, China

0

By Stephen Ubanna

Worried at the rate at which importers rush to Peoples Republic  of China to import goods into the country  and the problems that are encountered by Nigeria Customs Service, NCS,  officers  at the seaports and land the land border stations with such  imports over cases of  under-declaration and Concealment may have forced, Hameed Ali , a retired Colonel and  Comptroller General  to take bull by the the bull by the horn to checkmate  the importers activities  decisively .

His insistence that officers  must have an idea of the transactions going on between importers and their Chinese suppliers before the Consignment finally gets to Nigeria ports  for clearing and delivery to the Importer’s warehouse  was  said to have encouraged the Customs Comptroller General, to approve the China trip for Aminu Dahiru, an Assistant Comptroller General in -charge of NCS, Zone A,  Lagos, Comptrollers Muhammed Uba Garba, Baba Abdullahi Musa, of Seme and Tin-can Island respectively including Adama Ptiskum, Comptroller, Customs Information Communication Technology, ICT.The premier port, Apapa and Tincan Island ports, alone handles over 70 percent of the imported cargoes into the country while  Seme is is the busiest international border route in the West African sub-region and African, in general.

The Magazine learnt that the team headed by Dahiru, the Assistant Comptroller General, had left the country about two weeks ago and had been traversing the ports and border areas in China to see things for themselves and be in a better position to deal with importers and  ensure trade facilitation in the country. The the Dahiru led team were said to have been taken to Shenzhi  Customs , where over   8,000 Contairised  cargoes, going into different countries in the world, including Nigeria and  other West Afirican countries  were processed daily  and given clearance to  be loaded into ocean going  vessels awaiting to carry  them  at the port. The trip, acccording to a Customs source, was an  eye opener to the senior Customs on the trip.

Aminu Dhiri , led Team in China

The Shenzhi Customs operational base, according to a Nigerian based importer in China  is about 52 km from Hongkong, another Asian  country, which was formerly part of China. it is not surprising why Nigerian importers rush to the two Asian countries with ease to place ordesr for supplies of goods to them without putting into consideration the country’s fiscal policy measures.

It would be recalled that the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, had banned the importation of 41 items into the country, including tooth paste, on the orders of President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015.  The ban  made the items ineligible for foreign exchange allocation . This is because of the speed at which importers who were given approval to buy foreign exchange at he official exchange rate abuse the privilege to place order for unnecessary goods which found their way to Apapa, Tincan-Island ports  and Onne ports, in particular, thus wasting  the country’s scarce foreign exchange earnings. The situation was so bad that  most of the Containers that were said to have been shipped from China and India, in particular , were found  to contain different  items as against what was declared in the importer’s  Bill of Lading.

There is no gain saying the fact that China is the biggest  destination for importers  all over the world, including European and United States importers. Indeed, different  types of cargoes ranging from   personal effects to  industrial machinery are said to be manufactured in the Asian industrial giant  because of cheap Labour and which were sold cheaply to Customers.

Take for instance, furniture, Children toys,  fashion items, Electronic gadgets,  fancy ceiling pendants,  Household Utensils, Building materials, Security and Tracking gadgets and Laptops/Pads/Phones.  ”These may have  made the country a den  of goods for importers”, a Customs officer remarked.  It was not surprising why  Ali, the Customs  Comptroller General , has decided to  keep a close tap on the goods  imported in into the country  from China to ensure that they comply with the government fiscal policy measures by sending his officers to he country.

Many believe that that the Nigeria Customs  officers on the trip could tap enough knowledge from the vast repository  of products  that are available in the country to the benefit of the nation.  Financial analysts  averred that since the Chinese  Renminia, RMB, popular Yen,  had been included  by the World Bank/International Monetary Fund, IMF,  among  the basket  of reserve Currencies that have Special Drawing Rights, SDR,  the country has continued  to see it  as a reflection of the importance  of its Currency in the world  trading and global financial market.  The fallout  was the expanding of  its trade  and the substantial increase  in the international use  and trading  of the RMB,  as  the  country is increasingly entering into  Currency Swap arrangement with other countries in the world, including Nigeria.

Given Ali’s desire to checkmate the activities of Nigerians importing goods from china by sending his officers to the country, Maritime analysts expect him to still send other senior officers to India, another Asia Country, that had been identified  going by Customs records  where Pharmaceuticals Companies   connive with their Nigeria Customers to ship Tramadol and other dangerous drugs, Concealed with other items into the country. They believe that Nigeria Customs  officers interaction with their supposed Indian  Counterparts, should they be allowed to  go there, as  was the case in Shenzhi Customs in China, it would go a long to curb the excesses of importers with their Clearing agents and their Customs Collaborators in Nigeria.

While Tincan Island port, had remained a haven over the years for importers who Contravene the government fiscal policy measures  and still take delivery of their goods with the active Connivance of Customs personnel, a    senior Customs  officer who spoke to the Magazine    disclosed  that the rot in the port  would be minimised  considerably as Abdullahi  Musa, the Command Comptroller, who was on the recent trip  to China,  would not  hesitate to put into practice what he had  learnt from his counterparts in Shenzhi Customs, China, to put the officers on their toes, particular, the Command Enforcement and Customs Intelligence  Unit, CIU, officers to do the right thing and plug all the loopholes and tricks employed  by importers to  shortchange the government.

For importers who also think they could  import their goods which Contravene the  government fiscal policy measures through Cotonou port and any  other port in the West African  sub-region and still smuggle them into the country , through  approved and unapproved routes, had to watch it as the Chine Shenzhi , ChinaCustoms officials appear to  have exposed their tricks to their Nigerian Counterparts.

A close source at the NCS Zone A office, Lagos,  informed the Magazine that given the experience acquired by the officers on the China trip, they were enthusiastic to return to Nigeria to implement what they have learned from their Chinese counterparts to tighten up security at the seaports and land border stations  and which is expected to go a long way to improve the revenue collection of the Service.  The return of the Customs team to China   may have put fears on importers who place order  for made in China goods as Customs personnel now scrutinise to the last pin, all imports from the country. The same attention were said to have been  extended to imports from India and Turkey, an European nation. The Customs officials at the ports and land border stations have to take special interest on imports  from, China, India  and Turkey, because of the 2019  general election  to forestall the shipment of dangerous drugs such as Tramadol or arms and ammunitions into the country.

NFF Election: Infantino Congratulates Pinnick

0

Gianni Infantino, President of World Football ruling body, FIFA has sent a congratulatory message to Amaju Pinnick on his re-election as the President of the Nigeria Football Federation.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that in the polls conducted by the NFF Electoral Committee in Katsina, Pinnick swept aside three other contestants, polling 34 votes.

Other contestants, Aminu Maigari got eight votes, with former international, Taiwo Ogunjobi getting only two votes, while there was no votes for club owner Chinedu Okoye.

In the letter addressed to the NFF and copied to the Confederation of African Football, Infantino congratulated Pinnick and the other executive members who were elected and wished them the best of luck for the challenges ahead.

“Dear Pinnick, allow me to extend to you my warmest congratulations on your re-election as President of the NFF for the 2018 – 2022 period, at today’s NFF Elective Congress in Katsina State.

“Also convey my congratulations to all your colleagues of the Executive Committee who were elected with you.

Aubameyang’s Father Named Gabonese Coach

0

Former captains Pierre Aubame and Daniel Cousin have been named as co-coaches of Gabon after the dismissal last week of Spaniard Jose Antonio Camacho, the country’s football federation said.

Aubame is the father of Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang while Cousin, who was a forward at Rangers and Hull City, previously acted as team manager in charge of logistics.

Francois Amegasse, another former national team skipper, takes over Cousin’s role.

“We hope these three former captains will transmit their experience to the players,” said a statement from the federation.”

Camacho, a former Spain coach, was fired last week after winning only two out of 17 matches, while he was in charge over the last two years.

The news came few hours after Pierre Emerick Aubameyang grabbed a b race in Arsenal’s 4-2 UEFA Europa League win against Ukranian side, Vorskla Poltava.

Aubameyang’s coach, Unai Emery was pleased that Arsenal kicked off their Europa League campaign with a 4-2 home win over Ukraine’s Vorskla Poltava but could not hide his frustration at the concession of two late goals.

The North London club were marching towards a dominant victory on Thursday when Mesut Ozil put them 4-0 ahead but two goals in the last 14 minutes from the visitors left Arsenal without a clean sheet this season.

Emery called on his players to improve their defensive mentality, especially after conceding a stoppage time goal in a 2-1 win over Newcastle United last weekend.

“Our disappointment today is the two goals conceded,” the Arsenal manager told reporters.

“We are speaking before each match to take a mentality of ‘don’t concede chances easily’… but the last 30 minutes, we needed to be better on this competitive aspect.

Babies Stabbed At Childcare Center

0

Three newborn babies and two adults were stabbed during a pre-dawn attack at a suspected illegal childcare centre in New York on Friday, allegedly carried out by a female employee, police said.

The injured infants ranged from three days to one-month old, police said. One woman suffered multiple stab wounds to the torso, while a man received a stab wound to the leg.

The motive was not immediately clear.

A 52-year-old female “babysitter/worker” at the in-home centre was arrested, police said. The stabbing took place in the borough of Queens shortly before 4:00 am (0800 GMT).

The suspect had a slash wound to her left wrist, police said. Two knives were recovered at the scene and all the injured were taken to hospital in a critical but stable condition, police told reporters.

Police told AFP earlier that the suspect attacked two baby girls and a baby boy, leaving one of the girls in a serious condition. None of the victims’ lives was in danger, police said.

The wounded female victim worked at the daycare, while the other was the father of one of the babies.

Nine babies and some of their parents had been at the home at the time of the attack, police said.

Officers found the suspect in the basement of the center with a  self-inflicted cut to her wrist.

A police spokesman earlier told AFP that the childcare center appeared to be an “illegal” facility for members of the city’s Asian community, but officers later clarified that its status was unclear.

The in-home centre appears to have functioned for several years, as police responded to a noise complaint from neighbors in 2011.

2019 Election: Abdusalami Abubakar Predicts Nigeria’s Disintegration

0

By Akinwale Kasali

Months to the 2019 general elections, former military Head of State, General Abdusalami Abubakar, has warned about the likely disintegration of Nigeria.

Abdusalami said he will forever be an enemy of anyone that tried to hinder the democratic development of Nigeria or plunge Nigeria into crisis.

Abdualsalami said this at the Maiden Edition of General Abdulsalami Abubakar Foundation Peace Lecture, organised by the staff and students of the Abdulsalami Abubakar Post Graduate Students’ Hall of the University of Ibadan. The lecture was titled; “Collaborative Peace Building in Nigeria,”

He cautioned politicians against disrupting the 2019 general elections, saying “we have no other place to run to should the country be engulfed by fire”.

According to the former head of state, Nigeria cannot be that great nation we all want,  except we all agree to collectively work together and collaborate on peace.

“Peace is not absence of disagreement. Every society must have disagreements. This is because we are not born alike, even twins do not operate in a like manner,” hence there is nothing wrong with people having disagreements.

“What is expected is that when we have disagreements we would find peaceful solutions to the issues, ” he said.

He said there can be no sustainable development where people find it difficult to deal with the problems around them peacefully.

“It is therefore, my honest opinion that we are going nowhere until we have a national consensus to work for peace.

“What our politicians should focus upon at a time like this is to be working with professionals on how to make a difference in 2019.”

The former head of state stressed the need for Nigerians to focus more on addressing the escalating development crisis in the land.

“No matter how good those managing INEC are, if things are not well managed as they are, it might be difficult for us to have credible elections in 2019,” he said.

He advised the students to reject being used in the forthcoming elections and not be allowed to be dragged into electoral malfeasance and violence.

He also appealed to politicians to be more conciliatory in their relationship and public utterances.

“INEC must be an unbiased umpire. The security agencies in the country must be fair to all, people must be free to vote their leaders”.

The Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof Idowu Olayinka, praised the former head of state, adding “it is very rare for a military head of state to say he has to grant the wishes  of the people for a democratic government.

“This is the kind of things we need in Nigeria for our leaders to forge peace in the country,” he haid.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the University presented a peace award to Gen. Abdulsalami, while a cafeteria was built in his honour.

Some Dignitaries at the event included former minister of Petroleum, Tam David West, the GOC, 2 Division, Fidelis Azinta,  former Executive Secretary, TETFund Prof.  Suleiman Bogoro and the state governor, Abiola Ajimobi.

Soldiers And Shiites Clashes Again

0

By Akinwale Kasali

Blood, tears, loss, destruction and anguish was the lot of innocent citizens who were caught in the middle of the clash between members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, Shiites, and the men of the Nigeria army in Potiskum, Yobe State, earlier today.

The magazine was informed that the fracas began shortly after the IMN members rounded off their Ashura procession with prayers around 8:30am near Central Hotel, Potiskum.

The Yobe State Police Commissioner, Abdulmaliki Sunmonu, who confirmed the incident to journalists said that three persons were injured during the clash.

He said that the JTF responded after the IMN members attempted to seize one of the security operatives’ rifle.

He said he was awaiting more details about the incident.

He said: “I will update you as soon as I get full details on the clash.”

A member of the IMN group, El-Tafseer, who spoke to journalists, said the police boss did not give the true reflection of what happened, he explained that they were attacked by the soldiers minutes after the Ashura procession had closed.

He said, “We just sighted the soldiers armed with guns and sticks approaching us. They started beating and harassing us to disperse.

“We began to run when they fired gunshots indiscriminately. Three people were injured and a teenager, not our member, was hit by a stray bullet in the head.

“He died in the hospital.

“They also arrested Malam Gambo Abbas and detained him.”

Our correspondent was told that the indiscriminate gunshots threw the town into confusion with residents and passers-by scampering to safety.

Osun Election: Royale Rumble

0

By Akinwale Kasali

Less than 24 hours to the Osun State governorship election, the state has been beefed up with security details from all the forces. In every nooks and crannies, from Oshogbo, to Ife, Ilesha, Ila Orangun, Ede, Modakeke, Ijesha and its environs, security personnels could be seen roaming round the streets, getting prepapared for Saturday’s election which is mainly between the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the Social Democratic Party, SDP, candidates.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, state Resident Electoral Commission, Mr Olusegun Agbaje, has warned politicians not to misinterpret the commission’s electoral rules for their selfish aims.

Agbaje was reacting to the allegations that the commission had placed a total ban on the usage of mobile phones and cameras at polling units.

Speaking on Friday at a press conference at the commission’s office in Osogbo, the state capital, the REC said it was not true that the commission had asked voters not to come to polling units with their phones.

He clarified that the commission only asked voters not to hold their phones inside the voting cubicle, in a bid to curb vote-buying, a phenomenon that has marred elections in the past.

He said, “It is important to once again clear the air on some baseless allegations being peddled around by some critical stakeholders, such as the banning of phones and other cameras at the polling unit; giving out of uncollected Permanent Voter Cards to a certain political party; preparing the Smart Card Readers to favour a particular political party; and that INEC will be biased during the election.

“The allegations are not true. They are figments of the imaginations of those that made them, as they have not been able to substantiate them as I speak to you. INEC did not place a ban on phones and other camera devices at the polling units.

“What INEC said is that voters should not carry their phones or other camera devices into the voting cubicles where the voter will mark the ballot so as to safeguard the secrecy of the ballot.

“Voters are free to come with their phones and other camera devices; what we are saying is that at the cubicle where they will be casting their votes, they can’t be allowed to go in with anything except the voting materials.”

Agbaje also warned politicians and voters against vote-buying, and vote-selling, saying the commission was ready to unleash the full wrath of the law on anyone found doing so.

The three major gladiators in the ‘royal rumble’ contest for the soul of Osun State government are Iyiola Omisore of SDP, Senator Ademola Adeleke of PDP and Alhaji Adegboyega Oyetola of APC.
Though, Adeleke is relatively known in politics, people even described him as a politician of circumstance. In the field of politics he is yet to learn all the rudiments in the political field but as fate would have it, after the demise of his elder brother, Senator Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke, he contested for the vacant position and won as electorate transferred the love they had for the late brother to him and ensured he emerged as Senator representing Osun West senatorial district at the upper chamber.
With that, he has been able to register his name in the minds of the electorates. Also the influence of his cousin, David Adeleke, aka Davido, also gives him an edge in the political sphere of Osun state.
On the part of Iyiola Omisore, a chartered engineer and seasoned administrator, Iyiola Omisore emerged as the SDP candidate in the election. Fondly referred to as ‘Otunba’ or ‘Apesin’ by his friends he had served as the elected deputy governor of Osun State from 1999-2002 on the platform of AD and also as senator from Osun East district from 2003-2011. To his strengths, Senator Omisore seems to have the backing of some notable politicians from Abuja.

Omisore has a very massive grassroots support in the state and his victory would bring together all the disgruntled elements and his emergence as the governor would re-harmonize the Osun SDP and as a remarkable financier of the SDP in the state. He will be ready to provide the needed financial muzzle to withstand the APC and PDP money bags. Since Omisore had once occupied the deputy governorship seat of the state and had once been in power, the influence they will wield on the electorate is inexplicable.

It should be noted that Senator Omisore is very strong as he has the ears of the “Who-is-who” that is believed to be in line with his political tactics.

With his closeness with powerful politicians in the country and Osun State, his stints at the senate and presidency have made him to be the outstanding and an exposed politician in the field of politics. His campaign train is also moving fast to all nook and cranny of the state to convince the electorate that SDP is the only political party that has the chances of winning the forthcoming election in the state.

Also, his structure and followership are his greatest source of influence and power. Omisore’s has direct access to the people in power; his impeccable antecedents at the Senate, his romance with some political leadership are bases of his influence and power. It should be noted that his presence would cause a stir in the camp of the opposition during the election and as such we cannot but say he is a very strong personality to be reckoned with in Osun 2018 polls.

However, the age-long unsubstantiated allegation of his alleged involvement in the murder of late Chief Bola Ige may be his albatross, even though the court has vindicated him.

Political pundits are tipping Alhaji Adegoyega Oyetola of the APC as the person that could likely be the next governor of the state, putting into consideration the Aregbesola/Tinubu factor.

Until his emergence as APC candidate in the state, Oyetola was the Chief of Staff (COS) to Governor Rauf Aregbesola. But he is a “foreign” politician who does not have his political roots in Osun State.

Born in Iragbiji of Boripe Local Government of the state of on September 29, 1954 he attended University of Lagos, where he bagged Bachelor of Science and Master Degrees in Business Administration with specialisation in Finance from the same University of Lagos in 1990. He is a successful insurance magnate and was appointed as the Chief of Staff by Governor Rauf Aregbesola on January 7, 2011. It is being rumored that he is Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu’s first cousin.

His influence and weight in his home town remain cloudy, dicey and un-predictable as he is still learning the politics of the state.

However, his political backer and mentor – Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola- who has achieved greatly in giving dividends of democracy to the people of the state could be considered as his ladder to the Osun State helm of affairs.

The outgoing governor would not want to lose at the poll but to win to boost the chances of APC in Osun State for another four years after expiration of his tenure. The party’s victory in the state will soften the ground for further elections in 2019 and at the same time plant his political machinery on ground to dismantle any opposition.

The influence Aregbesola and power of incumbency which he wields so strongly is a strong factor and the governor in his hometown Ilesha, can convince his kinsmen so easily and this will help him sell APC to them bearing in mind that his constituency is one of the largest voting zones which dictate who governs the state.

From all indications, his dream of planting his successor on the seat may be realized since he has a structure on ground, he continues with such. His vision for qualitative education, health, agriculture and roads will be better intensified if re-elected.

Without mincing words, Ogbeni Aregbesola is a strong political APC stalwart and as the governor, he is a grassroots mobiliser. His affinity to Asiwaju Tinubu is a plus for him and this will definitely boost successor ego. The financial wherewithal is no problem for him, as the incumbent, he has access to resources to face anyone.

Another dream of Ogbeni Aregbesola is a matter of continuity as he would work so assiduously to retain the seat for his successor to ensure that all his projects and legacies are not rubbished by any successive government; knowing full well that he was the initiator of such projects.

Of equal importance is the federal might and supports of neigbouring states in the South-West. On Thursday, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo led several governors and party leaders to the state rally to boost his moral with the broom revolution.

But considering the fact that he is from Ilesha, he is definitely going to meet a very stiff opposition in the likes of Chief Ebenezer Babatope and Erelu Olusola Obada, who are from the same place with him. The Ilesha people may definitely split their votes for these giant politicians. Since he is vying for governorship, people tend to see other politicians from the zone as home based while Ogbeni is seen as an ‘imported’ politician from Lagos who did not actually spend most of his life at the grassroots.

But to his credit, his educational and infrastructure reforms are to certain extent-remarkable only that his classification exercise married its achievements relatively. Summarily, Governor Aregbesola is a strong APC stalwart with former Governors Bisi Akande and Ahmed Tinubu being his mentors and godfathers. His popularity amongst civil servants hangs in the middle as the pacts with Osun labour unions have not been fully implemented.

Non-payment of workers’ full salaries is a major hindrance. Of course, this could be a major reason why his candidate may be voted out on election day. Osun is a civil servants’ state and if the workers determine not to vote for his successor, it means, the party and the candidate would lose during the exercises.

Also, failure of the government to pay compensation to many of the people rendered homeless by government through its urban renewal policy and still squatting in friends’ houses is a major problem. As a result of this, they might not vote for his candidate at the poll.

There are so many aggrieved party members who were opposed to the emergence of Oyetola as the party flag bearer for the race. Out of these members, thousands had defected to other political parties while some are believed to remain in APC to serve as spy for those who had already left. This development may cripple APC chances at the poll.

Some indigenes of the state who are members of the APC are said to be opposed to his candidacy for eight reasons. They said though the voted for Aregbesola four years ago because they were convinced he was the best candidate, today, they simply not convinced that Alhaji Oyetola has what it takes to make a positive difference.

They said the continuity agenda indicated that Oyetola wants to perpetuate current government’s “heritage of half salaries, non-payment of pensions and arrogance of ignorance that pervades the land, conflict of interest in the collection of the state’s IGR and lack of preparedness on the part of the candidate.” They also fear that Oyetola, who is from Iragbiji might turn out working for a surrogate governor in Lagos.

I’m Embarrassed For The Ojukwus

Any true Igbo son who held, and still hold Ikemba Nnewi, Emeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, of the blessed memory, in reverence, should be embarrassed by the turn of events in his nuclear family. They must be embarrassed by the gutter behaviour of a couple of the children he sired! And for women, especially Igbo women, they should rise in anger against these Ojukwu children, specifically, Dr. Ike Ojukwu and Emeka Ojukwu Jnr. Both men deserve no respect from any woman who has any self-esteem.

Ever since their father passed on, they have been dancing naked in the market square in a futile bid to humiliate his widow, and, indeed, their step mother, Iyom Bianca Ojukwu. The irony: They are fighting over an inheritance they contributed nothing to.

The Ojukwus are not the only members of a prominent family who try to publicly rubbish the names they bear in a fight over inheritances. It is like some of them cannot wait for their patriarchs and/or matriarchs to pass-on before they show who they are. We read their stories in the media, and shake our heads in disbelief.

Dim Odimegwu Ojukwu and Bianca.
Dim Odimegwu Ojukwu and Bianca.

Yet, none has been more embarrassing than what is going on in the Ikemba Ojukwu family.  If Bianca was made of a softer skin than she has, she would have crumbled under the weight of the hatred the Ojukwus habour for her.

Her greatest weapon is that she hardly needs them to bask in the sun. Before she married their father, her husband,  she already was a solid woman –  a Lawyer. A dead – drop beauty. A national, continental and international Beauty Queen. She is also from a solid family –  a daughter of a well-respected, no-nonsense, Ngwo son, the late Christian Onoh. Onoh was a state governor, and he was stupendously rich. By virtue of being an internationally recognised Beauty Queen, Bianca was a millionaire before she married Ikemba. By virtue of being an Onoh daughter, Bianca was a millionaire before she married Ikemba. While  married to the Ikemba, she also became Nigeria’s Ambassador to Spain, with her husband’s consent. So, from whichever angle one looks at it, at no time was Bianca a nobody – as a spinster, as a married woman and, as a widow. What is the problem then?

Until Ikemba’s passing, nobody knew that any of his children held his wife, Bianca, in contempt. If there was any such feeling,  it was well covered-up. Perhaps, because of Ikemba’s  status and his intimidating presence, none of his children dared rubbish his wife either publicly, or to his hearing. The open hostility started as soon as Ikemba passed-on. And since then, there has been no let – on.

Emeka Jnr, in particular, takes great pride in running his father’s widow down. It remains for him to publicly call Bianca a free woman. I think he has always doubted Bianca’s marriage to his father. But not only was his father’s “chasing” of Bianca public, the Court, the traditional and, the Church weddings were also public and well-celebrated. Ikemba never did his things in half-measures. Indeed, at the time, the doubt was: Will this wealthy Beauty Queen agree to marry the Ikemba? She was rich and famous. But theirs was a fairy tale love story.  It was beyond beauty and fame.

Many women, including this writer, had for several months, watched  in disbelief, as Emeka Jnr continuously painted Bianca in derogatory colours. But it came to a head recently when Bianca declared interest in running for the Senatorial election, under APGA, a party her husband was the leader until his passing, to represent Anambra South at the Senate.

That was all Bianca did. She cursed nobody. She never stopped anybody from aspiring to the same seat. On the contrary, she wanted to keep her husband’s name alive in APGA, something Emeka Jnr had since abandoned by freely defecting to the ruling party at the centre – the All progressives Congress, APC.

Just for emphasis, Bianca declared her senatorial ambition under APGA, not under the APC. Her declaration of interest to run for the Senatorial seat did not in anyway rubbish the Ojukwu name. Nor did it stop Emeka Jnr to also declare interest in running for the same seat under the APC if he has the liver and, yes, the clout. But his anger and that of Dr. Ike Ojukwu boiled over.

So, the Ojukwu brothers upped the ante of their contempt for Bianca. At a press conference addressed by Ike, with Emeka Jnr present, both men not only tried to disown Bianca, they tried to strip her of her dignity as a woman, a wife and, a mother.

Taking the first shot at her was Ike Ojukwu, a Director of Ojukwu Transport Company Ltd. For him, Bianca, a legal wife of Ikemba, has committed a cardinal sin by daring to declare her interest in the Anambra South Senatorial seat.  His words: “It would be a let-down to allow a woman from Ngwo, Enugu state, to represent Anambra South Senatorial District. The district has several prominent people.  Is she from Nnewi. She is from Ngwo in Enugu state. If you ask me, I would prefer someone who is a son of the soil, and because I come from Nnewi, I would like an Nnewi indigene to represent us.”

My brief response: This sounds like a sponsored press conference. By marrying an Nnewi man, prominent or not, Bianca is not only an Nnewi wife, she is an Nnewi daughter and, the mother of Nnewi children – in this case two sons and a daughter! Clear enough?

Then enters Emeka Ojukwu Jnr in a most disrespectful, insolent manner. Said he:  “A young woman who was supposedly  (emphasis, mine)) married to my father who is late, a young woman who could remarry tomorrow, may be from Abia state or Sokoto  state. And you want her to come and represent us. I wonder if there are no other people in Anambra South that can represent us.”

My response: Did Bianca’s declaration stop others from doing so? In any case, isn’t  Emeka a man? And is he not from Anambra South? Why doesn’t he take himself seriously and run for the seat? And imagine? He dismisses  Bianca as supposedly married to his father. Supposedly? What guts? Bianca was properly married to Emeka Jnr’s father  – court, tradition, church. And they have children together. Even if they didn’t have any, she was legally married to the Ikemba who was, till death, very proud of his stunningly beautiful wife. And Bianca, in turn, was, and is still proud of her husband. She was not only a loving wife while Ikemba was healthy, in ill-health, Bianca stuck to her husband, looked after him, and, in death mourned him the way Igbo women mourn their husbands. Whoever advised the Ojukwu brothers to address this press conference did them no good. They exposed them to public ridicule.

Emeka jnr. actually asked if anybody asked and/or consulted the Ojukwu family before Bianca’s declaration of interest in the Senate. Nobody needed to consult them. Only Bianca had the right to  consult them.  But they lost that privilege when they showed her, in no unmistakable terms, that she is not quite family.

At the press conference  they spoke as if they were speaking on behalf of the Ojukwu family. Not true. Ikemba and Bianca’s children are bonafide Ojukwu children. Were they consulted before the ill-advised press conference?

Bianca, Ojukwu and their children.

The Ojukwu brothers have more serious issues to address than Bianca’s senatorial ambition. For instance, in case the Ojukwus have not heard, the unconfirmed allegation out there is that a couple of them were not quite the caring and loving family when the Ikemba was ill. This allegation will not be made against Bianca who stuck to her husband and gave him the needed care and love which he needed most. In death, unlike Emeka jnr, who rose to prominence (politically), becoming a Commissioner at one point, obviously,  for being Ikemba’s son, Bianca is keeping the Ikemba political flame aglow. She did not abandon her husband’s party. Emeka Jnr has since abandoned Ikemba’s political legacy, APGA.

Yet,  Bianca is being treated like an outcast.  Since her husband’s passing, she has had no breathing space. Of course, the Ojukwu family is already famous thanks to their grandfather,  Sir Louis Ojukwu and later, the Ikemba, but if Bianca goes to the Senate, she will only be adding to the fame, not subtract from it.

By referring to Bianca as an outsider in a family she rightly belongs to, the Ojukwus insulted not only her, but every woman and every widow. The Ojukwu wives should take their husbands up. The implication for them, really, is that their husbands think they are strangers in their matrimonial home, and may treat them as such some day. They should watch out.

As for Nigerian women and, Anambra women in particular, they should hold the Ojukwus to their words, and have it against them in case any of them dares to contest for any position in future, women should give them a red card. And they have an opportunity to teach them a lesson now.

Here is how.

Dr. Joseph Onoh, Bianca’s brother, in a statement he issued from London, in response to the diatribe against  her sister, among other relevant points, taunted the Ojukwus thus: “See you at Bianca’s inauguration?” I wish.  If she gets the APGA ticket, Anambra South women should call the bluff of the Ojukwus by voting massively for  her.

Finally, I submit that the Ojukwus owe women an apology. I submit that they owe widows an apology. I, also, submit that they should get rid of their huge ego, purge themselves of bad belle, and apologise to Bianca. To publicly run her down means running down their father’s name, memory, the surname they bear, and everything the Ikemba stood for. For a man who gave them a name and prominence, the way they are treating his beloved widow is, to say the least, a shame.
