Rivers: Amaechi’s Camp Collapses As Presidency Wades In

0

Things have fallen apart in the camp of Rotimi Amaechi following revelation by one of his trusted allies that the Minister of Transport plotted to hijack power in the state by crook.

The deputy governorship candidate of the African Action Congress, AAC Akpo Bomba Yeeh disclosed this in Port Harcourt, the state’s capital shortly after he decamped to the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP.

Yee has also announced his withdrawal from the race.

Reacting to the development, Barrister Teni Aduno, a Lagos lawyer said the implication of Yee’s resignation is that the AAC  ticket in no longer effective.

“The law provides for a joint ticket and in this case that the deputy governorship candidate has opted out of the race, the position of the law is that AAC as a party is no longer in the race.”

The minister’s camp, the magazine learned, has be thrown into chaos following the revelation even as the National Security Adviser, NSA has been directed by President Muhammadu Buhari to probe the involvement of security agencies in the matter.

It was also learned that bipartisan meetings have been going on among elders in the state on how to quickly end the crisis.

Governor Nyesom Wike has accused the INEC of failure to announce him as winner of the election more than two weeks after it was conducted.

But the AAC candidate revealed that the minister is very desperate to install his candidate so that he can continue to rule by proxy.

He said part of the plot was to remove him as the deputy governor as soon as AAC won the governorship election.

The politician said he had been forced to sign a letter to this effect by the former Rivers’ helmsman.

Hear him “I was forced to sign an un-dated letter of resignation as the Deputy Governor of Rivers State to pave way for Rotimi Amaechi to nominate another person as Deputy Governor.

These were slavish conditions for any rational politician worth his name to accept, but I pretended to play along because doing otherwise at that time would have been too dangerous for the safety of my life, given Rotimi Amaechi’s desperation to remove Governor Wike from office and install his stooge in the person of Engr Awara against all odds.”

According to him, he decided to abandon Amaechi and join PDP because he could no longer be part of the diabolical plot to deepen the bloody crisis.

Many people have been killed and others injured as the two political parties battle for the soul of the state.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has also failed to announce the winner of the governorship election held on March 9 due to the wanton bloodletting that has marred the state in the past few weeks.

But the AAC candidate said this must stop in the interest of the peoples of the state.

According to him “after due consultations with my immediate family, friends and supporters, I, Chief Akpo Bomba Yeeh, the Deputy Governorship of the AAC for the 2019 Governorship election hereby resign my membership of the AAC and announce my defection to the PDP to join hands with Governor Wike to move the state forward.

I was the Deputy Governorship Candidate of the AAC in Rivers State up till today 25th March, 2019 , when I decided to withdraw my candidature and resign from the party with immediate effect.

“The March 9 , Governorship election in Rivers State has been lost and won; lost by my party, African Action Congress (AAC) and its Candidate, Engineer Biokpomabo Awara, and undoubtedly and overwhelmingly won by the Governor of Rivers State, the candidate of PDP, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike. “

He alleged that security agencies were part of the diabolical plot by Aneachi : “The collated results further showed that contrary to the false claim of fictitious lead by the AAC/APC alliance, the PDP overwhelmingly won all the elections in 18 out of the 19 LGAs, culminating in the declaration and return of the party 26 House of Assembly Constituencies by the Constituency Returning Officers.

This fact was confirmed on the 13th of March 2019, when INEC stated, as a matter of fact, that it had in it’s safe custody collated results for 17 Local Government Areas as well as the declaration of the PDP Candidates for 21 State Constituencies.

The outcome of the elections on March 9, 2019 clearly showed the preference of the people of Rivers State. Even the blind can see and the deaf can hear the echo that Rivers people overwhelmingly voted to stick with Governor Wike for the next four years to encourage him to continue with the good works”.

Explaining that he signed the resignation letter under duress, the politician said “These were slavish conditions for any rational politician worth his name to accept, but I pretended to play along because doing otherwise at that time would have been too dangerous for the safety of my life, given Rotimi Amaechi’s desperation to remove Governor Wike from office and install his stooge in the person of Engr Awara against all odds”.

He stated that Ameachi boasted that all security agencies have been recruited into the plot; “Amaechi disclosed to us that he had already assembled security personnel drawn from the Nigerian Army, the Police, DSS and FSARS to provide adequate security cover and enablement for members of the AAC and APC to effectively rig the Governorship election and have us declared as winners on March 9 , 2019”.

He explained that the government will be in Amaechi’s pocket if AAC wins, because the ex-governor will be “the one to appoint 90 per cent of all political office holders, including commissioners, Special Advisers, and chairmen and members of Government Agencies and parastatals.

Second, he must be the one to nominate and produce all the 23 Local Government Council Chairmen and other principal officers of the councils.

We, that is, Engr Awara and my humble self must consult and take instructions from him on all financial, policy and fiscal matters, as well as award and payment of all contracts and other financial transactions upon inauguration as governor and deputy governor of the state.”

He said further that “As a practicing Christian, I have come to the conclusion that the actions and desperate attempts by Amaechi and the AAC/APC alliance to rig the Governorship and State Assembly elections in Rivers State are both morally and legally wrong, reprehensible and inimical to the collective interest of the people of Rivers State.

The Almighty God will not forgive me if I continue to lend my support to Rotimi Amaechi’s perfidy against the democratic rights of the people of Rivers State to freely elect their own leaders “.

Recall that the All Progressives Congress, APC was barred by the court from participating in the election due to fallout of the governorship primaries conducted by the party.

The plan by Amaechi and his party to support the governorship candidate of the Accord party, Dumo Lulu-Briggs for the election did not also work out after Briggs was also barred from participating in the election.

Seun, Popular Traffic Officer, Crushed

By Femi Adetunbi

At his regular beat at Badore Ajah, Seun, an Inspector of Police, Traffic Section, was usually the cynosure of all eyes. Very popular, Lagosians, including private and commercial vehicle drivers loved him. And so did tricycle (Keke) and motorcycle (Okada) operators.

He did his job with passion. He loved it. And for that, everybody loved him. On their own, they extended goodwill to him. But, all that came to an end Tuesday of last week.

Inspector Seun lost his life in a very terrible vehicle accident.

For such an officer, it was an unfortunate way to die.

Inspector Seun.

Seun was an officer at the Langbasa Divisional headquarters, Lagos. After the day’s work, he left for home having rested a bit in his office. He was close to his destination – Ajiwe Police Station where he had served before – a stone throw to where he lived, Oloko Nla, near Ajah, when a trailer driver lost control of his vehicle, after a  tyre burst, veered onto Seun’s lane, and crushed him. His vehicle was reduced to a mangle of steel.

Efforts by the trailer driver and passers-by to rescue and save him were in vain.

He passed-on at about 4.00am to the shock of family, friends, associates and colleagues.

Kano: Ganduje Wins Amid Violence, PDP Rejects results

By Uche Mbah

After series of reported violence, intimidation of voters and attacks on Journalists and independent observers,, the Independent National Electoral commission, INEC, has declared the Kano State Governor, Abdullahi  Ganduje, winner of the Kano governorship elections. The All Progressives Congress, APC had polled a total of 45,876 votes while the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP polled 10, 239 votes.  Prior to this, PDP was leading with 1,014,474 votes against the APC’s 987,819 votes.

During the supplementary elections, the media was awash with reports of violence and intimidation of voters by thugs. The  Kano chapter of the PDP called on INEC to cancel the election, alleging that it has been marred by irregularities and voter intimidation, especially opposition voters.

Civil Society Organizations has flayed the Kano election as riddled with violence.

Even during the collation of results, the PDP agents walked out en mass from the collation enter cbefore the announcement of the final results.

Reports indicate that there has been tension in Kano after the results were announced.

Rabiu Bichi, the PDP boss in the state, said they will be heading to court. He cited violence as one of the things that marred the elections.

“What is happening today is not election. Thugs have taken over most polling units and have been attacking our members and voters”, he said.

“Many have been injured, in fact, a member of the state Assembly representing Gwale, Yusuf Babangida on election duty was attacked and seriously injured.things that marred the elections.  We also have reports of attack on our members in Doguwa, Gwale and Dala, we are collecting the whole list of those attacked,” he added.

“We are going to pursue our right through legal means. Today is a sad day for Nigerian democracy, especially in Kano.  Recall that governorship elections were held on March 9 not just in Kano but Nigeria as a whole.  After the election, results from 43 out of 44 local governments were announced and we were leading, it was only the results from Nasarawa local government were pending and that was because the state deputy governor, the commissioner for local government and chairman of Nasarawa local government led some thugs to attack the collation centre and disrupt the process by tearing the result sheet”

It was found out that the figures did not tally in the final announced results. For example, in Makoda Local Council, the number of registered voters was 360; number of accredited voters was 360, number of PVC collected was 288. In the results declared, APC won 360 votes while PDP won non. This shows that voters turnout was 125%.

In other results, Samuel Orthom of PDP won in Benue, while Aminu Tambuwal won in Sokoto. Solomon Lalong of APC won in Plateau and PDP won in Bauchi.

For Governor Mohammed Abubakar, a Summons to Greatness

0

By Yidentity RevMov

For Mohammed Abubakar the Governor of Bauchi State, this must be one of the longest nights of his life. Today, Monday, 25 March 2019, the court is likely to rule on whether or not the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, can proceed with collation of the result of Tafawa Balewa LG in the governorship elections in the state. If the court vacates its injunction, as many think it will do, the Governor would have played all his cards, as he fights desperately to cling to a disappearing governorship.

That the Governor’s position has become clearly untenable followed the outcome of the supplementary election of Saturday, 23 March 209, on which he had hinged his survival. Unfortunately, at the end of the elections, Governor Abubakar who is flying the banner of the All Progressive Congress, APC, scored 5117 votes as against the 6376 votes scored by Senator Bala Mohammed, the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP. Meanwhile, Senator Bala Mohammed was already leading with 469, 512 votes as against Governor Abubakar’s 465, 453 votes before collation was suspended following the court order barring collation of the result of Tafawa Balewa LG.

From the above, theoretically and mathematically, there appears to be little or no redemption for the beleaguered Governor whose commissioner for finance took the unprecedented step of deserting, on the eve of the supplementary elections. Though nothing can be foreclosed in Nigerian politics, the unusual step taken by the finance commissioner had been interpreted as a vote of no confidence by Abubakar’s most strategic commissioner and for those who are superstitious; the Governor ought to have seen it as the end of the road. If that were to be the case, the expectation of every rationale person would be that, by now, the Governor should have made a concession speech, to end the painful drama playing out in Bauchi State.

For sure, the Governor should be on the horns of a dilemma, right now. Many questions will surely be racing through his mind: How did he squander the great opportunity provided by incumbency? How come that he is likely to become the first Governor in Bauchi State, to fail in his re-election bid when his predecessors, Adamu Muazu and Isa Yuguda both succeeded? How does he live down the fact that his would-be successor is a man who has not been in government for the past four years? Is there any miracle that can be conjured with the Tafawa Balewa vote to re-write the story? Or are there still some inconclusive areas to target? Questions! Questions! Questions! Quite frankly, that an incumbent Governor who controls all the state’s resources which ordinarily, should include the local government structure and whose party is in control of the Federal Government, should be running from pillar to post, in an effort to renew his mandate, is absurd and regrettable. Questions! Questions! Questions!

If the truth must be told, all these questions do not matter anymore. What makes sense is the ability of the Governor to show nobility of mind, strength of character, unfeigned humility and principled altruism; to accept that the good people of Bauchi State, who freely gave him their mandate in 2015, do not appear to be too eager to renew that mandate in 2019. It is indeed a sobering experience and the Governor deserves everybody’s understanding.

In the Governor’s situation, some other persons would find strength and consolation in the carriage, demeanour and statesmanship of his opponent, Senator Bala Mohammed who, in spite of his imminent victory, is not gloating nor is he whipping his supporters to frenzy. Rather, he has admonished his supporters to celebrate with decorum, jubilate with brotherhood and ready themselves for the collective task of re-launching Bauchi state on the path of greatness. The Governor can and should key into Senator Bala Mohammed’s summons to oneness, that invocation of the sobriety that unleashes man’s innermost passion for fraternal bonding and mutual progress, that nobility of spirit that douses our fiery ego and leaves us at peace with our Maker. Bauchi needs this and more at this period.

Imagine what will happen if by Monday morning, even before the work begins, the news waves are jammed with the Governor’s concession message to the state and congratulatory message to Senator Bala Mohammed. Think about the relief that INEC, the courts, party loyalists and faithful will all enjoy should they wake up to the awareness that this nightmare is over; consider the joy that will explode all over the state by the Governor’s act of statesmanship. It is never too late. Should the Governor thread this path, he would have sealed the cracks, filled the gullies and doused the infernal hatred caused by the bitter struggle for power.

This is a choice that only the Governor can make. Will he make it? Or will he continue to stonewall? Will he head straight to the tribunal where the lawyers will tell him that he has a very good case? Will he succumb to the dubious assurances of hell-raisers and sycophants who could not hold the political estate for him through efficient delivery of the dividends of democracy and whose insensitivity to the yearnings of the people probably brought him to this pass? Is it not time to jettison such associates and identify other points of service? Or perhaps, join hands with his compatriots from the state to form a formidable pressure group that will keep his successor on his toes and compel him to fulfill his electoral promises.

Luckily, Bauchi parades a solid reservoir of quality Nigerians in every sphere of national life. Whether it is in the military, academia, civil service or business, there is a surfeit of Bauchi indigenes that can be mobilized into a grand alliance to give the state the focus and energy it deserves. This group is available to be brought into a bi-partisan movement to spearhead the renaissance promised by Senator Bala Mohammed.

For now, while Bala Mohammed appears figuratively, to be the idea, whose time has come, Governor Mohammed can still seize the moment, rise above partisan pressure and etch an indelible impression on the psyche of the people, as the Governor, who, by one phone call, rewrote the political dynamics of Bauchi State.

WOPC Challenges Ihedioha, Others

0

The World Owerri People’s Congress (WOPC), has challenged the Governor-elect of Imo State, the Rt. Honourable Emeka Nkem  Ihedioha, on the sacredness of the mandate given to him by the people of the state.

WOPC is a high profile, influential association of Owerri sons and daughters who live in the United States of America.

In a congratulatory letter to the Governor-elect by WOPC, signed by its President, Uzoma Ihenacho, and made available to this magazine, Ihedioha was challenged on the desire of Imo people for a government that will be vision-driven. Said the WOPC: “You have been given the mandate of leadership by an electorate that is yearning for a positive impact on the people; a government that is sensitive to the need and welfare of its people; a government that is accountable and innovative, guided by purpose-driven vision of equitable human and infrastructural development”

The association, while wishing Ihedioha a smooth tenure, extended its “hand of partnership” to him “in the realisation of a people oriented representation and governance”

In a separate congratulatory letter to other Owerri sons who won their elections, also signed by Ihenacho, specifically, Honourables  Ezenwa Onyewuchi, Ikenna Elezianya, (both elected to the National Assembly), and Honourables Philip Ejiogu, Kanayo Onyemechi and, Samuel Anokam (all of the Imo House of Assembly), Ihenacho, on behalf of the WOPC, asked them to see to it that the people’s faith is restored in  public service and good governance.

He also used the opportunity of the congratulatory letters to ask Ihedioha and the others to keep open July 18 – 21, for the 19th Convention of the WOPC scheduled to hold at Charlotte, North Carolina during which ideas on developmental goals will be discussed.

Atiku: Presidency Fears Election Annulment, Plots Installation of Pliant Senate President, House Speaker

0

By Chidiebere Onyemaizu

New, but compelling, realities may have forced the presidency to jettison its “siddon look” approach to who becomes the next President of the Senate and Speaker of House of the Representatives when the ninth National Assembly is inaugurated on June 10, 2019.

The sheer volume of alleged  rock-solid evidence at the disposal of Atiku Abubakar’s legal team against the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari in the February 23,2019 presidential election, and the meticulous manner the Osun state governorship election Tribunal dissected and secrutinized INEC’s election materials used for the September 2018 governorship election in the state, which led to the discovery of unexplained discrepancies have forced the President’s handlers back to the drawing board.

Unsure of what would be the outcome at the Supreme Court, members of his kitchen cabinet are insisting that the two topmost positions in the National Assembly must go to trusted allies of the president who will be willing  to play ball should the on-going legal fireworks result in the annulment of the Presidential election, and the ordering of a  fresh one.

Atiku Abubakar
Atiku: Releases parallel presidential results

The constitution stipulates that in the absence of the President and Vice President, the President of the Senate, being the third in the hierarchy of Nigeria’s presidential system, takes over as acting President for the period of three months within which a new election would be conducted.

Atiku, a former Vice President, is the candidate of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the presidential election, losing to Buhari by over 3million votes. The former Vice President and his party are, however, insisting that the election did not reflect the true will of Nigerians.

They accuse the APC of militarising the electoral process and, in the process, rigged the election. Last week, Atiku released different results of the Presidential election which he said was the authentic one contained in INEC’s serve. The parallel results showed that the PDP presidential candidate beat Buhari by over one million votes.

Impeccable presidency and APC sources told The Source that nothing will be left to chance in view of what one of them termed “resurgent assertiveness of the judiciary”

“Contingency plans are being worked out so that if the unthinkable happens and the Presidential election is annulled and, re- run ordered, we will have a fallback position. And this fall back position is a Senate President who will be an acting President for three months, “and will not rock the boat”, a source within the National leadership of the APC told the Magazine.

Tanko Mohammed
Tanko Mohammed, Acting CJN: Can Atiku find succour in the judiciary?

To this end, it has been learnt that the President’s handlers have allegedly impressed upon him the need to personally select a Senate President and House Speaker he can trust.

In the light of the above, the likelihood of both the next Senate President and Speaker of House of Reps emerging from the far North — North East and North West – is not being ruled out.

“The President has repeatedly demonstrated he could only trust people from his part of the country and religion with sensitive national positions, so if he is eventually convinced of the imperativeness of having a close, trusted ally as head and deputy head of the National Assembly so as to guarantee his return to office, if his election is annulled and fresh one ordered, he may not look beyond the core North”, a returning Senator from the South said.

Meanwhile, some of the President’s loyalists in the National Assembly say the Nigerian leader is a man of his words and will, therefore, stand by his pledge not to interfere in the selection of leaders of the ninth National Assembly.

Similarly, a presidency source dismissed Buhari’s alleged planned imposition of Speaker and Senate President as hogwash, describing such thinking as “mere baseless speculation”. “Such move is inconsistent with Mr. President’s character trait. It is mere speculation, baseless speculation”, he stated.

Just as he did in 2015 upon winning that year’s presidential election, President Buhari, penultimate week, speaking through his Special Adviser on National Assembly Matters, Senator Ita Enang, declared he would not interfere in the selection of principal officers of the ninth National Assembly.

Osun: Oyetola Heads To Appeal Court, APC Mulls Impeachment If They Lose Again

0

By Uche Mbah

The Osun state chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has described the Peoples Democratic party, PDP victory at the Tribunal as “temporary”, insisting that the victory cannot stand legal scrutiny. They have headed to the Appeal Court to overturn the verdict. The governor, Gboyega Adetola, had earlier sued for calm, saying the verdict will be challenged at the Appeal Court.

A three man panel of the Election Tribunal sitting in Abuja had ruled that the PDP candidate, Ademola Adeleke, won the governorship election. The panel had to relocate to Abuja due to fears of violence erupting at the tribunal venue. Counsels for the PDP cited threat to lives as reason for requesting change of venue.

According to the three man panel, the PDP candidate won the election during the first ballot, describing as illegal the rerun that gave APC victory. The leading tribunal Judge, however, gave a minority judgement.

If the APC goes to appeal, it will be the last stop, since election petitions for governorship are meant to end at Appeal Court. But it has become commonplace for governorship elections to be dragged all the way to the Supreme Court due to some technicalities.

Dr. Onyechi I kpeazu, SAN, headed the Adeleke legal counsel. He was the same Counsel that won the case for Peter Obi against Ngige in Anambra state, thereby making him the first lawyer to send a sitting governor packing.

Reacting to the victory, the presidential candidate of the PDP, Atiku Abubakar, hailed the judgement, saying that it shows that the Judiciary is “the defender of democracy”.

Besides going to Appeal Court, the APC is mulling the contingency plan of removing Adeleke through impeachment if they fail at Appeal Court. As it stands, the sate house of Assembly is dominated by APC, with only two members belonging to PDP.

Since he took over power, Oyetola had refused to appoint commissioners citing heavy financial burden of the state. His Uncle, Bola Tinubu, a leader of the APC, has not commented on the victory of PDP yet.

Osun: PDP Wins Ahead Supplementary Elections In Six States

0

By Bayo Bernard

Exactly six months after the Governorship Candidate of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, Ademola Adeleke vowed to reclaim his mandate, the Election Tribunal sitting in Abuja has declared him winner of the election held on September 2018.

The development came on the heels of preparation for tomorrow’s supplementary elections in six states across the country.

The two political parties are standing head-to-head as INEC conducts election in Kano, Bauchi, Plateau including Benue. Election in Adamawa has been postponed to a future date after court ruling to that effect.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC had declared winner the candidate of the APC, Gboyega Oyetola of the election.

Oyetola was declared winner following a supplementary election conducted by the electoral umpire when no clear winner emerged from the first ballot.

But the three member bench presided over by Justice Ibrahim Sirajo delivered the judgment that upturned Oyetola victory at the federal high court, Apo Abuja on Friday.

The tribunal based its judgment on the 20 prayers sought by Senator Adeleke, among which is that he should be declared winner of the election.

Justice Peter Obiora, who read the judgement said it was wring for the INEC to declare the APC candidate winner in the first instance.

“In the final analysis, having held that the cancellation was illegal based on non-compliance, it’s out decision that the petitioner won the election of the Osun State Gubernatorial Election,” Justice Obiora said.

The tribunal also dismissed all the grounds raised by Oyetola in the preliminary objection as well as all grounds in the preliminary objections by his party, APC.

Anambra: The Tragedy of The Uba Brothers

0
Comfort Obi

By Comfort Obi

In Anambra state, the ego of a political dynasty has just been punctured. Its members have self-destructed. And got dismantled during a political battle comparable to that of the Biblical Goliath and David.

You must have heard of the three Uba brothers -Ugochukwu, Andy and Chris – from Anambra state. Ugochukwu is the eldest, and Chris, the last.  Of the same parents, the brothers are politicians, and, each accomplished in his own right. They have name recognition. They are very rich. Two of them, Andy and Chris, are billionaires. They have limitless contacts, and powerful friends.

The first son of the family, Ugochukwu, has a doctorate degree.  He did not buy it. He read, and acquired it. So, he is not one of those many illiterates, or half illiterates, who shamelessly prefix their names with Dr.

When in 1999, Nigeria embraced democracy again, Ugochukwu won a senatorial seat. So, in the Nigerian way, he is free to answer Senator (Dr) Ugochukwu Uba. And, if any traditional ruler conferred him with any of the many chieftaincy titles on offer in Igboland, he is also free to answer Senator (Dr) Chief Ugochukwu Uba. Nigerians, we love titles.

As a Senator, he was not a bench-warmer.  A number of Senators are. Their colleagues do their jobs. Many times, they are asleep in the Chambers. When awake, they are dumb. And only chorus “Ayes” or “Nays” depending on where the tide moves their colleagues. But not Uba senior.

Unfortunately, his was a-one-term tenure. As if the Uba brothers  had appropriated that seat as their father’s farmland, Andy vied for the same seat, under same party. He replaced his brother. Many stories still abound as to why Andy did not allow his brother a second tenure.  But following is the most popular.

At the time Ugochukwu was a Senator, Andy was one of the most powerful presidential aides in the Villa. A very close ally of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Andy was his Special Assistant on Domestic Affairs. And, he it was, who popularised that office and made it the envy of everybody, including Ministers. Until Andy, nobody reckoned with the position. But he so packaged it that Ministers prayed to swap positions with him. A number of them grovelled before him. And so did governors, and many of Nigeria’s richest businessmen today. His house then, located within the Aso Rock area, was the venue for many important decisions which affected Nigeria either positively or negatively. But I digress.

So Andy, soft spoken, suave and cosmopolitan, was Obasanjo’s very powerful aide, while his elder brother was a Senator. But Andy soon decided to acquire executive powers. What to do? He vied for the governorship of his state. The Ubas were said to have, allegedly, reached an agreement to leave the elder brother at the Senate while Andy occupied the governorship seat. As planned, he vied, and won.  Done deal? Yes, except that they didn’t bargain with a Peter Obi, dogged fighter, who was the incumbent governor.

Obi had just retrieved his stolen mandate from Dr Chris Ngige, current Minister for Labour. Ngige had contested under the PDP. And Obi, under APGA. While Obi clearly won the election, Ngige was sworn-in as governor. The abracadabra was perfected by, mark this, the youngest of the Ubas – Chris. Powerful family!

But, Obi went to court, and  Ngige was sacked. Now, no sooner was Obi sworn-in than Andy contested for the governorship seat, won, and was sworn in as governor. Obi refused to be part of the election. Instead, he went to court, insisting that his four-year tenure began on the day he was sworn-in. He tested the constitution and, Andy was sacked. The sack earned him the crown of Nigeria’s shortest serving governor. He was a governor for only about 14 days.

A man of a couple of firsts, Obi sacked two “governors” – Ngige and Uba. In doing that, he became instrumental to elections not holding on same date in the 36 states of Nigeria. For, buoyed by Obi’s victory, other governorship candidates who were cheated went to court. It is easy to forget, but that’s how come Adams Oshiomhole (Edo), Olusegun Mimiko (Ondo), Rauf Aregbesola (Osun), became governors. And that’s why elections into the governorship seats in those states hold on different times.

Chris-and-Andy-Uba
Andy and Chris Uba

So, Andy, after being sacked, set his eyes on his brother’s Senatorial seat. Apparently, being richer, more powerful, and more influential, than his brother, it was easy for Andy to sweep him out of office. He became the Senator. But in doing that, he allegedly breached a family agreement.

For eight years, Andy held sway. But in his backyard, a nemesis waited – his own angry, younger brother, Chris. A stormy petrel, the youngest Uba wields plenty of influence in the PDP. And is a political godfather.

One of his political godsons was Ngige. Till date he is not tired of revealing how he installed Ngige governor.  To fraudulently purchase the seat, Chris made Ngige to sign an agreement which stripped him (Ngige) of executive powers. Chris was to be in charge.  Taking no chances, he took a helpless Ngige to the notorious Okija shrine where Ngige swore to an oath of allegiance. When Ngige seemed to be reneging on the agreements, Chris “kidnapped” him. In a bizarre move, kept him in a toilet, and had him resign from office. Ngige was saved from that humiliation by Atiku Abubakar who was then, Vice President. In company with a former governor of Enugu state, I watched the video, and listened to the audio, in disgust, at Chris Uba’s,  Ngige’s resignation. It made me sick.

Anambra state parades more political godfathers than any other state.  They are high profile political jobbers. They trade with political offices.   They are comfortable with any government at the centre, and proudly flaunt it. These guys parade long convoy of cars, including escort vehicles. When they move, sirens blare to high heavens. At every point in time, at least, a dozen heavily armed policemen are attached to each of them. As a governor, no jokes intended, Peter Obi used to, quietly, give way to their convoy. But again, I digress.

I was talking about Chris Uba. While Andy was a Senator, Chris made a number of efforts to replace him with other people, if not himself. He bad-mouthed his brother at any given opportunity.  A known king maker, he soon, became tired of being one. He decided to be the king. He failed, on each trial. But, dear friends, has just succeeded this time.

Andy has, unbelievably, lost his Senatorial seat. The irony: Chris, who contested against him, is not the beneficiary. For, he was also beaten down.

Ifeanyi Ubah
Ifeanyi Ubah

The two brothers have never been close. Their relationship went from good, to bad, to ugly. And has remained a source of concern to many people – family, friends and associates. The question was, and still is: How could men of the same parents fight each other so bitterly, the way Andy and Chris fight. Their fights border on the destruction of each other, politically. It is one of the reasons, people allege, why Andy, then Chairman of the Senate Committee on INEC, defected to the APC from the PDP. The story is that he got tired of being in the same party with his younger brother. He feared he may not get a return ticket with the kind of influence his younger brother wields in the PDP.   During the 2019 NASS elections, a self-assured Chris picked the PDP Senatorial ticket, and Andy that of the APC. The battle was set. A bitter battle of brother against brother.  The state and, especially, their Senatorial zone waited, excited, for this mother of all battles. There were other challengers – notably the boss of Capital Oil, Ifeanyi Ubah and Nicholas Ukachukwu, both money men, but not in the class of the Ubas. But to the Ubas, Ifeanyi and Ukachukwu are political lilliputians. Or so they thought. The Ubas never really thought that the Biblical story of Goliath and David could play out, especially within their political space. As far as they were concerned, the battle was between both of them. How could their people look them in the eyes, and vote for somebody else – a lesser political god? Not possible.

But, on election day, the story of Goliath and David played out. Ifeanyi Ubah, with one stone, killed, politically, the two political giants. He sent both Ubas – Andy and Chris – packing. And for Anambra state, their zone in particular, it was a sigh of relief. Some fresh air.

We are tired of the bitter fight between the Uba brothers, they chorused. And they say they had never seen before, hatred, so intense, so deep, between two brothers.

The questions are: How did a family so blessed descend to this level? How did their blessings turn to a curse amongst them? Of course, sibling rivalry exists, but not to the level of hatred. We see that only in African Magic.

Their relationship must have been tough on their mother. Her heart must have been broken, several times, watching her sons, both accomplished, publicly exhibit such hatred for each other. Their siblings must be seething in shame.

Now, because of this hate-driven rivalry, the family has lost. Their place, for over 16 years, another has taken. In between, Andy had contested for governorship. But, he never made it again. His younger brother, Chris, had always been an obstacle, it is alleged.  The bad news: They may never win the people back.

Ifeanyi, the new Senator-elect, compared to the Ubas, is a political novice.  But he is a smart and street-wise businessman. He may be there for the next eight years.

Here is why?

For years, he had been contesting and failing – governorship to senatorial seat, back and forth. Each time, he spent hundreds of millions of Naira.  And yet nothing. This time, his heart was broken, more than ever, by APGA. The party failed him after he had invested so much resources and time. The promises and assurances made to him, for the senatorial ticket, were brazenly broken. Shattered and bitter, he took over a little known political party in the state, the Young People’s Party, YPP. He funded it, and  picked their ticket. And there he was this other day, showing off his Certificate of Return as a Senator-elect.

Smart guy, he knows that he is a political orphan. Even with his victory, the Goliaths he defeated could pull a few strings and re-surface to hurt him. So, he has quickly hidden under a very strong canopy.

Here is how.

A couple of days after his victory, Ifeanyi ran to Lagos, and quickly joined the APC in their campaign for the governorship election. Standing a step before (not behind) the now Governor-elect, Jide Sanwo-Olu, so everybody, especially his targets, would take note, Ifeanyi led Sanwo-Olu’s campaign to a market, Alaba, mostly populated by the Igbo.  He wants his bread real buttered. Under Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s canopy, he is safe. He will have protection.

The Ubas have separately gone to the Election Tribunal. I don’t know what evidence they have.  But the two Ubas – Andy and Chris – will cancel each other. They will testify against each other. Ifeanyi’s victory seems safe. And to seal it, he may soon join the APC. This is the tragic story of the Ubas. And how they self-destructed.

But, I have an unsolicited  advice for the Ubas. You are young. You are talented. You are rich. You have a high profile network of friends. Get your acts together.  This defeat is a bitter lesson. Learn from it. Bury, six feet down, your hatred for each other. Otherwise, you will become history. Your political friends will disappear. It can be lonely.  And, people will laugh no end.

PDP Alleged Plan to Stop Buhari’s Inauguration Rattles Presidency

By Uche Mbah

There appears to be palpable tension in the Presidency with allegations that the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, is poised to go to Court to stop Buhari’s inauguration on May 29.

It will be recalled that there was a court order preventing the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, from completing the announcement of the remaining results in Bauchi State. In the already announced results, the PDP was said to be in the lead. The state Resident Electoral Commission, Ibrahim Abdullahi, had suspended the collation of the results in obedience to an Abuja Court order that ruled that the collation of the results must be halted.

The order was an ex parte order-meaning the order was given based on application of one party in the absence of the other party-at the instance of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and it’s Governorship candidate, Governor Mohammed Abubakar. They allege that the cancelled results in Tafawa Balewa was more than the margin of victory by the PDP, and thereby sought suspension of the announcement.

Indications are that INEC got a counter order and the collation has been finished, giving the PDP the victory.

But in the thick of the imbroglio, PDP rejected the Court order calling it unconstitutional, hinting on the possibility of their filing a motion to stop the inauguration of President Buhari on May 29 later in the year. They also threatened to stop governors from being sworn in.

Since that announcement, this Magazine learnt, serious legal consultation has been going on within the presidency. This was coming on the heels of the PDP filing a case against President Buhari, asking the court to either declare Atiku winner of the elections or, in the alternative, cancel the elections and order a rerun. The PDP has also released what they called the authentic result extracted from INEC back server, where Atiku Allegedly won Buhari by over a million votes.

Festus Keyamo, the spokesperson for Buhari campaign team, had described the threat by PDP as “Unserious”.

“We challenge them to go to court. Buhari is the sitting president. He will continue in office till when they want him to be sworn-in. Let them go to court. We shall meet there”, he said. But beyond the verbal missiles, there appears to be a more concerted efforts by the presidency to stop Atiku’s Court actions. Sources indicate that they have not relented in their efforts to use various groups to prevail on him to soft pedal on the court cases. This was confirmed by Buba Galadima, who spoke on Channels television, alleging that people close to Atiku are being paid heavily to try to convince him to jettison the court cases.

Meanwhile, Atiku has been meeting with Southern and middle belt leaders assuring them that he is on his way to reclaiming his “stolen Mandate.”

The meeting, held at the Abuja residence of Edwin Clark, an Ijaw leader,  had Pa Ayo Adebanjo, Yinka Odumakin, Chief Femi Okurounmu and Chief John Nwodo in attendance. “We believe this is a mandate that has been stolen from Nigerians. We believe justice will be done. We still have confidence in our courts of law. The most important thing is that we have been able to galvanize the people of this country to think alike and act alike in unity” ,Atiku told them. “We have also come to realize and accept that the basis of our unity and coexistence lies fundamentally in restructuring this country so that every part of this country can have a sense of belonging and also have the opportunity to exploit their human and material resources for the development of the citizens.

“I believe this is a struggle we must continue together until we achieve it. I believe it is achievable. Nigerians have nothing to fear about restructuring of this country. We know how the military brought a unitary federation,” he concluded.
