Edo state governor, Godwin Obaseki, may end up a one-term governor. He has been, finally, by his estranged political godfather,  the All Progressive Congress, APC, National Chairman, Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole.

Oshiomhole, who is, also, Obaseki’s predecessor, has endorsed oil magnate, Hosa  Okunbor as the next governor of the State. It was Oshiomhole who edorsed Obaseki, the then Secretary to the State Government as his successor.

This is coming weeks after Governor  Obaseki visited the former governor at his home town during the Muslim festival where both men dismissed speculations that there was a rift between them, indicating that both men had buried their hatchet.

With this new twist from the former Labour leader, it is clear that there is no  light at the end of the tunnel for both men, as they are poised to fight to finish.

The magazine reliably learnt that the fate of Obaseki to return as governor of the State for the second is dashed and has been sealed.

It was also gathered that Oshiomhole took Okunbor to meet top APC stalwarts last Saturday night, during which party leaders, stake holders and National leaders of he party met and accepted the choice of Oshiomhole to paddle the  affairs of the party  for the next four years.

Oshiomhole was alleged to have met Chief Edebiri, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other top APC leaders that have the ears of President Muhammadu Buhari and revealed why he decided not to support Obaseki on his second term bid, as against what was being reported in the media.

The relationship between Oshiomhole and Okunbor had existed for long, as both are confidants, although, Okunbor was a strong member of the Peoples Democratic party, PDP, and was a major financier before he jumped ship to join his friend in the APC.

Okunbor was said to have launched a $750 million Agriculture business in Edo State during the Oshiomhole administration as the governor of the State.

Oshiomhole graced the grand opening of the farm with fanfare, and applauded the innovation as a giant stride.

With this development by the APC National Chairman, Obaseki is not ready to succumb, as he is set to continue his quest to remain at the Edo State Government house till 2024.

You Are Irresponsible, Wike Tells A Fuming Ganduje

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers and his Kano state counterpart, Abdullahi Ganduje, are presently at loggerheads.  Both parties are threatening  fire and brimstone, and may end up in court.

The reason for this brickbats is the alleged demolition of a  mosque in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State, on the orders of Wike, for which Ganduje threatened to institute  a legal action against Wike.

Wike’s spokesperson, Nwakandu said that Ganduje was  just raising empty threats as Wike is not dollar currency that Ganduje can pocket sheepishly and recklessly.

Nwakandu stressed that Ganduje is just blabbing as he has no power to dictate where and how the Rivers State Government  can bring about developmental strides to the State, insisting that  no Mosque was demolished in the State.

He added that Ganduje played a pivotal role for the All Progressive Congress, APC, during the 2019 elections and the re-run in Rivers State, just to see Wike lose, but was defeated by Wike

He also added that Wike is ready for Ganduje, and id waiting for him to proceed to Court.

Bayelsa: Dickson Locks Horn With Jonathan

0
Goodluck Jonathan congratulates Douye Diri as Bayelsa State governor

24 hours to the Bayelsa state Peoples Democratic Party, PDP governorship primaries there’s uneasy calm in the camps of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

The ruling party in the state will on September 3, selects its flagbearer for the governorship election slated for December this year.

The governorship election is slated for November 16 later this year.

Over 10 major candidates from the party are squaring up with themselves, to know who will get the delegates nod to contest with candidates of other political parties.

But those who understand the politics of the oil rich state have already narrowed down their choices to four candidates.

They are former NDDC Managing director, Timi Alaibe, Senator Douye Diri, representing Bayelsa Central, Nimbofa Ayawei, chairman of the state revenue agency and Kemela Okara, the current Secretary to the state government, SSG.

While three candidates belongs to the Restoration group, a political machinery chaired by Governor Seriake Dickson, Alaibe seemed to be the odd one out because he does not have the state’s helmsman support for his ambition.

But despite the cold silence between the governor and the ex-NDDC boss, former President Goodluck Jonathan has told his supporters to back Alaibe, the magazine has learned.

Governor Dickson doesn’t seem to agree with Jonathan on this.

The state’s helmsman has recently stated that he will prefer his successor to emerge from the Restoration Caucus.

“The shoes I am leaving behind are very big” for anyone outside the caucus to wear, the governor said, that he will make sure that whoever succeeds him has the interest of the state at heart because “prosperity will judge” me.

He said “only very few of the people who come to talk to me have the interest of the state at heart. There is no free money to give anybody in Bayelsa warning delegates not to “kill for anybody, none has the power to make you billionaire,” Dickson said.

Meanwhile, the major dilemma now facing the governor, the magazine has learnt is how to block Alaibe who among other support in the state, is riding on the political crest of ex-President Jonathan.

Alaibe has recently fortified his team with staunch members of the party from the state, including a former two-time deputy governor and ex- speaker of the state house of assembly, who now serves as director general of his campaign.

The magazine also learnt that some members of the Restoration caucus who broke ranks with the governor’s camp have also joined the Alaibe aspiration.

In spite of all of this, sources in the state told the magazine on Saturday that the governor’s camp has been trudging on with the belief that they will emerge victorious.

Though, Governor Dickson has disclosed that he’s not backing a particular candidate but the magazine learnt that an arrangement is being worked out to support a consensus candidate before the election on Tuesday.

“We have to go into the election as one body if we are not to lose to our opponents,” a member of the Restoration Caucus told The Source.

The governor’s caucus has shown capacity to push any candidate they support through the primaries, analysts say.

According to this line of thought, the fact that candidates supported by the governor cleared all the chairmanship positions in all the eight local governments in the state is a good testimony that the governor and his team are well prepared.

Governor Dickson is also believe to have enlisted the support of the national caucus of PDP including senators, house of assembly members and majority of house of reps members from the state.

“It’s a straight fight between Alaibe and whoever emerges as the consensus candidate of the Restoration Caucus, the PDP candidate will emerge by Tuesday evening,” said Akinloye Richard, a political analyst.

Nigeria’s contingent to the just concluded All African Games, AAG, in Morocco are being praised by sports enthusiasts, analysts and the Federal Government for their scintillating performance at the Continent’s Championship.

Team Nigeria, as the delegates to the competition are called, proved their mettle as one of the leading sports nation in the Continent, despite the poor preparation and the fire brigade approach of Nigeria to major competitions.

Nigeria won 46 gold medals; 33 silver and 48 bronze medal to finish second behind Egypt who won 102 gold medals; 98 silver and 73 bronze medal to garner 273 medals to top the medal log.

South Africa came third behind Nigeria, winning 36 gold, 26 silver and 25 bronze.

The host nation, Morocco came a distant fifth behind fellow North African neighbor, Algeria with 31 Gold, 32 Silver and 46 bronze.

Algeria on its part garnered 33 Gold, 32 Silver and 60 bronze medal.

Minister for Youths and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, showered encomium on the nation’s contingent for making the nation proud.

“This is a superb performance, within the shortest time of preparedness, the athletes made the nation great and displayed good character and attitude throughout the competition”.

The Presidency also applauded the athletes for doing brilliantly well, and for being good and worthy ambassadors to the  nation.

“This is worthy of celebration, the athletes have made all of us proud. As they prepare for the 2020 Olympics, we will always support them”.

Sports analysts and enthusisats are not left out of the frenzy, as they  praised  the athletes for putting up a good performance and to have remained resolute inspite of the challenges they went through.

Ghana, Nigeria’s West African neighbor has been given the nod to host the next All African Games coming up in 2023.

Bobrisky: How I lost Over N14 million; Nigerians Slam Police

0

By Akinwale Kasali

Cross-dresser and transgender, Idris Okuneye, popular as Bobrisky, says  he lost over N14 million to the disruption of his birthday  party by the Police.

He is presently on the run following the invasion by heavily armed policemen of the venue of his planned birthday party, which had  Nollywood celebrities in attendance, alongside his fellow cross-dressers, gays, lesbians and transgenders.

The  highly piblicised soiree had already commenced at The Pearl Garden off Admiralty way, Lekki, Lagos, when the police stormed the venue, sent everyone out, and sealed the premises.

This act by the police, according to the Lagos State Police Public Relation Officer, Bala Elkanah, was as a result of a tip-off that what would have transpired at the venue was against the laws of the land.

Elkanah stressed that the government was not ready to allow continuous breach of existing laws, noting that allowing public display that would corrupt younger minds and people was inimical to the nation’s consciousness.

Bobrisky was said to have fled the scene and has been in hiding since then .

Bobrisky took to his Instagram page to condemn the police action, stressing that the police made him waste and lose over  N14 million already spent for the party.

He also apologised  to his guests, saying that he is a hard not to crack, that he will always triumph.

Nollywood actress, Nkechi Blessing Sunday has condemned the police for disrupting the party, and also wanting to arrest  Bobrisky.

Sunday defended Bobrisky, accusing the police of denying him his fundamental human rights as a citizen.

Many believe that the ordeal of Bobrisky was connected to his clash of words with Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, the Director General of National Council for Arts and Culture.

Olusegun Runsewe, had threatened to go after Bobrisky and his likes.

Runsewe made the statement in a recent interview, describing the cross-dresser as a disgrace to the nation.

Bobrisky called Runsewe’s bluff on social media and added that he ”Rolls with the big boys in power”.

It would be recalled that former spokesperson to the Lagos Police Command, Dolapo Badmus had earlier stated that any one caught in the act of homosexualism, gayism and their  likes would be charged to court and will be jailed for 14 years, stressing that the state will not condone such act.

Agony of A Diseased Nation

0

By Adewale Kupoluyi

On a daily basis, one keeps ruminating over the litany of moral decadence afflicting our society. What seems more disturbing is the prevalent cases of rape and defilement of children, toddlers and babies across the land. Rape should never be tolerated. It dehumanises and, is emblematic of degradation of societal values and ethos. It becomes unpardonable when an innocent and harmless child is attacked by an adult that is old enough to father her, if not by her father. That is the rot that we are witnessing in our sick and diseased society today.

A few days ago, it was widely reported that doctors at the Federal Medical Centre, Yola, Adamawa State, battled to save the life of a five-year-old girl  ,allegedly, raped by an unidentified man. Doctors at the hospital said the development had caused severe damage to the girl’s body such that it would require a major corrective surgery to save her. The little girl was said to have been rushed to the hospital after the defilement, in a critical condition.

There are ample examples whereby children and toddlers have been sexually abused, raped or killed in the country.

Before the Adamawa episode was the one involving a headmaster in one of the schools, in Lagos State, who was caught having sex with a primary school pupil in one of the school’s toilets. Similarly, a 15-year-old girl was discovered to be impregnated by an elderly man and close confidant that it took a lot of persuasions to get the girl to confess.

This dire situation inflicting our nation requires urgent attention more than ever before.

A 2015 United Nations International Children Education Fund (UNICEF) report showed that six out of 10 children in the country are vulnerable to sexual abuse before the age of 18. With this statistics, it can be seen that the plague of child sexual abuse has eroded the moral and social foundation of the society that we all live in.

Unfortunately, parents, guardians and, the government appear helpless and clueless concerning  the moral question, because of poor legislation and enforcement. The stigma and criminal procedure involved in establishing a prima facie case of rape in the country is highly complex and cumbersome, making victims to prefer to remain silent and making the circle of criminality to continue.

At times, some females lure men into raping them. The prevailing situation in the country suggests that full tracking of rape and rapists is still not available. What this simply means is that previously rapists or paedophiles can still be employed by schools without knowing, to teach children, and make them further vulnerable.

There seems to be  a conspiracy of silence against rape and rapists as people prefer to avoid talking about it as if it’s a non-issue. From the rape child cases recorded lately, most of them occurred in schools. To arrest this disturbing trend, parents and guardians should be more vigilant by ensuring that they look out for the moral integrity of the teachers and workers in their children’s schools. They are also encouraged to teach their children the basics of sex education. This is to ensure that unnecessary myth centred about sex is made known to the girl-child early in life.

Despite being classified as one of the countries that signed the United Nations Convention on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, Nigeria can  be said to have done little to ensure that school authorities and governments adequately protect children and girls at crèche, nursery, schools and educational institutions from sexual abuse. The convention prescribes that children should have right to survival, develop to the fullest, protection from harmful influences, free from abuse, exploitation and ensure full participation in family, cultural and social life.

We recall the story of a failed society when a 13-year-old girl, Elizabeth Ochanya died from Vesico-Vaginal Fistula disease that she suffered from sexual assault in the hands of a father and his son in Makurdi, Benue State.

The fate that befell Ochanya was one of the reasons the Child Rights Act was enacted to cure. Regrettably, poor enforcement of such laws continues to make thousands of girls from less privileged families to be constrained by serving as housemaids or slave labourers, where they are daily sexually-exploited and limited in the realisation of their full potentials in life. Some are bodily deformed and made barren for life due to no fault of theirs when raped. It is saddening that only about 20 out of the 36 states of the federation and the  Federal Capital Territory have domesticated the Child Rights Act meant to ensure that every girl-child is protected from abuse.

The continued cruelty against our girls and women is vividly captured by the Ghanaian writer, Amma Darko, in her fiction titled, Faceless. In the typical state, as depicted by her Sodom and Gomorrah, criminality, corruption – immorality and injustice are order of the day – where women and girls struggle to live in the harsh, greedy and merciless in the male-dominated world. In Faceless, there is an attempted rape of Fofo by Poison, as a weapon to silence and intimidate her cursed mother; Maa Tsuru, to cover up his (Poison’s) complicity over the murder of Baby T; Fofo’s elder sister at the Agbogbloshie market despite the calculated attempts to cover-up.

Maa Tsuru herself, a victim of sexual abuse, is faced with the huge challenge of raising her children alone as a single mother. Along the line, Fofo manages to escape from Poison’s trap unlike the submissive Baby T, who is unlucky and sexually abused early in life by Kpakpo, her step-father and mother’s irresponsible husband. Not only is Baby T serially molested by the ‘apparently kind neighbour’ and superstitious Onko. Baby T could not overcome the overbearing pressure of the lustful men, as she was eventually turned into child prostitute and exploited by elders and even close relatives. Poison, notorious and greedy for money, is equally a product of a bad family upbringing and known for habitually using fear to intimidate girls and women.

Maa Tsuru’s non-challance, stupid manipulation by men, lust for money and poor decision-making, led to the tragedy that befalls her innocent children and family. Partially lucky Fofo, a very confident girl, who wants succour for vulnerable children like her, wants to see the government at all cost. She believes that seeing the government would liberate her and her sister; Baby T from bondage, not knowing that our governments are helpless and dysfunctional to meeting the yearnings of citizens. Fofo’s benefactor, Kabria, through her non-governmental organisation, eventually saved her from jungle justice and later rehabilitated her into normal life without any governmental intervention.

In Nigeria, rape can be said to have reached an endemic level. No female is really safe from being raped. The country’s criminal justice system should be better activated against the growing aberrant behaviour through stiffer penalties. In the many countries where rape cases are promptly dealt with, including the United States of America, sex offender registers are kept by all states and districts. We should replicate this policy in the country to tag serial rapists and reduce the possibility of them committing the same offence. Rape victims should summon courage to come out fight this social cancer.

Borrowing from faceless, collective effort is required to end the scourge as government alone cannot end it. Rape should never be deployed as an instrument for settling rift and difference.

Mothers should shield their daughters from being vulnerable. Until rape is taken as a national tragedy, it may remain the same and difficult to eradicate by making life miserable and worthless for our toddlers, girls and women. More importantly, boys and men should take a vow never to rape.

Rivers: Bitter Fight In Lulu Briggs Family Over Will

0

Billionaire Kalabari son, Benson Lulu Briggs had a premonition of what might happen after his death between his children and wife over the multi-billion naira estate he left behind.

But he seemed not to enviswage the level of acrimony that the wealth he left behind will create in his family apart.

To avert the impending catastrophe in his own little way, the oil mogul decided to settle his first three sons with a portion of his property, and from what the magazine learned he gave them a large chunk of it between 2003 and 2004.

The rest of the estate he gave to his beloved wife, Seinye Lulu Briggs, because according to the content of the Will he left behind, the Rivers state born business man stated that he had settled his first three children and therefore did not leave tangible wealth for them.

One of the children is Dumo Lulu Briggs, a staunch politician and chairman of Platform Petroleum.

The other two sons Senibo and Sofiri, the father said in the will, have been settled and therefore will no longer share a substantial part in the wealth he left behind.

That is now the cause of major dispute between Seinye and the three sons of late prominent Kalabari chief who died recently in Ghana.

Since he joined the silent majority his family has not known peace over suspicion on the part of the three children that he may not have died of natural causes.

The philanthropist, the magazine learnt had lived with and managed increasing and debilitating Parkinson disease for close to 20 years before he eventually died recently.

Besides, the children are also contesting the Will the business man left behind.

Sources close to the family told the magazine that some members of the family believe that the content of the will must have been doctored in favour of his widow.

Dumo alongside his brothers had opposed the reading of the will over allegation of fraud and extortion.

In fact, the senior son of the high chief who died in December last year secured an exparte order from a high court in Rivers state to prevent the reading of the will.

But the order was later vacated leading to the reading of the will, part of which stated that the deceased must be given a Christian burial in which Seinye, his widow must play a major role.

Close to a year after he passed on his three eldest children are in a bitter fight with the wife on how the wealth he left behind should be shared.

An autopsy carried out at the military hospital Ghana on July 19  to ascertain his demise , has been rejected by the children who have demanded that a fresh one be conducted.

The Ghanain authority however rejected the request.

Apart from this, the magazine learnt that efforts by some prominent Nigerians to intervene in the dispute have been vehemently opposed by Dumo and his siblings.

For instance, the magazine was told that former Governor of Cross Rivers state, Donald Duke is one of those that have tried to mediate in the matter but is yet to make a head way in the matter.

Duke is one of the four trustees of the estate left behind by Benson who until his death was chairman of the oil exploration and production company, Moni Pulo Limited.

Apart from the ex-governor, the Amanayabo of Kalabari, King J.T. Princewill Amachree is believed to have waded in the matter but “has been trying hard to bring all the family members together for an amicable solution,” one very close relation of the Lulu Briggs told the magazine on Friday.

IG Orders Clampdown On Shiites Leaders

0

By Uche Mbah

The Inspector General of Police, IGP, Mohammed Adamu, has ordered a clampdown on Shiite leaders in an unprecedented attempt to curtail the group.

To this end, signals have already been sent from the Force Headquarters to all state and Zonal Commands. The IG has asked for strict compliance with the directives.

The Signal, according to findings, was sent on August 30, 2019.

The IG was piqued that an Assistant Commissioner was killed during the containment of the demonstrations by the group that left many dead, and many more arrested. Shiite said through their spokesperson that the death was not caused by their members.

The signal reads in part:

“As you are aware that this necessitated the setting up of a special investigation team of inquiry. The team had gone far in its investigations

“You will also recall that given the odious activities of the movement, the Federal Government obtained an order proscribing the group

NIGPOL FORCID directs you ensure that identified leaders of the group and their structures are dismantled and their activities contained.

“You are to inform me of your action for discreet investigation and possible prosecution of violators of the proscription order. Treat as very important.”

The Shiite leader, Ibrahim El Zakzaky, has been in detention for years. Recently, in obedience to a court order, he was released to go for treatment in India, but that was botched, with both government and El Zakzaky trading blames on why it was not succesful.

Presidency Claims Leah Sharibu Still Alive

0

By Uche Mbah

Presidency Saturday confirmed that the Christian girl abducted by Boko Haram and denied freedom because she refused to renounce her faith is still alive contrary to speculations.

Sharibu has become the symbol of the fight against Boko Haram with Nigerians feeling, rightly or wrongly, that government is not doing enough to effect her release.

But the Media Aid to Buhari, Garba Shehu, Saturday raised hopes that she is still alive despite general skepticism to that effect.

Speculations were that she may have been killed by her captors.

“Lines of communications remain open with the kidnappers, ISWA, to secure the release of Leah Sharibu”, he said.

‘‘Contrary to false reports, she is alive – given assurances from our security agencies-, and the government is committed to her safe return, as well as all other hostages to their families.

“Kidnapping for ransom should never be encouraged. This means not capitulating to the demands of terrorists: refrain from rewarding their heinous crimes with payment.
‘’With the abduction of loved family and friends, the government understands how difficult these time are for them, but the government is pursuing many options to ensure the safe return of Leah Sharibu.
“We must commit to law and communication, using the breadth of strategies at our disposal: legal initiatives, stakeholder cooperation, the involvement of all relevant parties and the use of the latest hostage negotiation techniques.
‘‘Kidnapping for ransom is rising across the Sahel. We must – collectively – make sure we implement best practice to prevent its exploitation”, he said.

In recent times, government has become known for negotiating with bandits, Boko Haram and kidnappers, that analysts are wondering what Shehu meant when he said no one should give in to kidnappers, and that no ransom should be paid.
Last Thursday, Aminu Masari, governor of Katsina, home state of Buhari, invited bandits to the Federal secretariat to beg them not to kill again. This happened in the presence of security agencies.
