South Africa Shuts Its High Commission In Nigeria

By Uche Mbah

Fears of attacks by Nigerians has forced the South African High Commission to be closed down after alleged threats by some faceless Nigerians.

South Africa has been under International Diplomatic angst over the attack and looting of properties belonging to foreigners, most notably Nigerians in an unprecedented Black on Black violence.

The crisis was sparked off when a Tanzanian hoodlum shot and killed a South African, sparking riots and xenophobic attacks. Many South Africans used the opportunities to loot the shops of foreigners, mostly Nigerians, . In some reprisal attacks, Nigerians started attacking South African interests. Prominent among these interests are MTN, the Telecom giant, and Shoprite, a chain of retail shops in Nigeria. There were rumors of threats on the South African High Commission.

A South African broadcaster, ENCA, talked to Lunga Ngqengelele, of South African department of International Relations and co-operation, who said the country is shutting down its office in Nigeria.

“We received reports that some of the people in Nigeria and Zambia have tried to attack some of the businesses belonging to South Africans in their countries.

“Out of safety and of course concerns for the employees of the embassy, a decision was taken that we temporarily shut down while we are assessing the situation and ensure that no one is injured in the process”, he said.

He claimed that they have been in contact with Nigerian government and that he was assured that Nigeria is on top of the situations, but they have no choice but to temporarily shut the High Commission until the situation is clear. The Nigerian Police has claimed they have arrested over a hundred people who were part of those that broke in and looted places like Shoprite.

International media has been reporting the incidence but making it appear that it is violence against whites, since they made sure to interview only whites and Asians.

Xenophobia: Jim Ovia Withdraws From WEF

By Uche Mbah

Reports reaching this Magazine indicate that Jim Ovia, the Founder/Chairman of Zenith Bank Plc, has withdrawn from all activities at the ongoing World Economic Forum in South Africa.

Although the reason for withdrawal is not stated, it may not be unconnected with the current xenophobic attacks going on in South Africa.

Nigeria has withdrawn from the forum in the wake of the hues and cries following the xenophobic attacks, after recalling the Nigerian High Commissioner in South Africa. But the duo of Jim Ovia and Oby Ezekwesili of the Bring back Our Girls fame attended the conference. While Ovia was said to have withdrawn, Ezekwesili released a statement on her twitter page explaining why she had to attend.

“Those who  have genuine concerns about my being at @wef in South Africa should please know that my decision to be here was thoroughly considered.

“I am in South Africa leveraging on my ensure that @GovernmentZA never again looks away while our citizens were attacked, maimed and killed.

“My life vision is to always stand for the weaker. This a role I play within and without Nigeria. For me, the next three days in South Africa are programmed to achieve a certain specific action by the @GovernmentZA. Our citizen’s preservation is important to me not noise.”

Unconfirmed reports also indicated that the governors of Kaduna and Ekiti, Nasir el-Rufai and Kayode Fayemi were also there.

In a related development, the chairman of Air Peace, Allen Onyema, has released an Aircraft to airlift Nigerians in South Africa who want to avail themselves of the services to return back to the country. This was announced by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, in a release.

There has been criticisms on the participation of both Ovia and Ezekwesili at the forum, particularly as she was reported to have criticized government slow reaction to the xenophobic activities.

Customs: Comptr. Mohammed Marches On One Year After

0

Few days to go in August , a formation of federal troops consisting of the army, police , Navy and air-force marched on Seme after a combined drill that also include other paramilitary forces like the Civil Defense Corps.

Simultaneously, the same event was also taking place along other border posts across the country.

The forces, armed to the teeth and ready to go, had been ordered by President Muhammadu Buhari to join the NCS to strengthen security across all international borders in the country.

Security experts say the move is a change in strategy for the Buhari’s administration in five years, intended to counter various security problems facing the country.

“Other security agencies that have now taken positions along the borders include the DSS and NIA, their mission is first to check the influx of dangerous weapons and movement of terrorists within our borders,” said a ministry of defense official in Abuja on Wednesday.

The development has obviously altered the operations of the NCS in such a way that it no longer has the monopoly of controlling the movement of goods and persons along the border “at least for the period that the joint border operations will last,” one security analyst said last week.

It has nevertheless hamstrung the activities of some customs’ area controllers along the borders as some of them appear to have left the task to the ‘joint military operations,’ close customs watchers say.

But at the Seme Command of the NCS, one Comptroller Mohammed Uba Garba will not allow himself to be relegated to the background or dwarfed by the ‘federal forces,’ whose presence at the borders, many insist have made movement of goods and persons difficult since they debut few weeks ago.

At the time that unusual silence have pervaded many border commands across the country, the Seme command braved the odds after Comptroller Uba directed his men to go after criminals more than ever before as they could not allow themselves to be distracted by the presence of the federal forces.

His order has paid off.

Few days ago, some criminals have plotted to hide under the hullabaloo of ‘Abuja forces’ to bring into the country some contraband including parcels of cannabis sativa, a banned substance.

Unbeknown to the members of underworld, who the magazine learned were working in cahoots with a gang from neighbouring Ghana, the controller had, after an intelligence report, directed his eagle-eye operatives to lay an ambush.

The gang of smugglers eventually fell into the trap set by Comptroller Uba and his men.

“Thank God for that successful operation five parcels of banned drug, suspected to be cannabis sativa would have found the way to the country thus compounding the problem of use of dangerous drug and abuse among our citizens especially the youths,’ a border security expert told the magazine of the seizure.

Comptroller Uba has not relented in his patriotic duty of making the nation safe from the Seme International border end since he was redeployed from the FOU Zone A, Ikeja exactly a year ago by the Comptroller General of NCS, Col. Hameed Ali (rtd), close watchers of the Service said.

Recently in July Comptroller Uba had reminded notorious smugglers that he has the mandate of the CG to run them out of town and their illegal business ‘for the good of country.’

He made the statement while displaying to the public seized rotten cow hide also known as ‘pomo’ and other prohibited items worth N114.5m.

Smoking out smugglers wherever they are hidden “will ensure that our core mandate as directed,” by the CG “is achieved,” he said.

According to him “the holistic approach in executing the mandate of the service will lead to an all-encompassing result as revenue generation, suppression of smuggling and legitimate trade facilitation will be adequately enhanced at the Lagos-Abidjan corridor without compromising national security.”

The controller has a unique message for criminals with funny ideas to test the resilience of his men.

For drug smugglers he recently said “We as customs men have the patriotic duty to support the effort of the federal government to rid the nation of hard drugs in line with the directive of the Comptroller General of Nigeria Customs Service, Col. Hameed Ali (rtd)

His command will also not spare smugglers of prohibited goods, trying to undermine the nation’s economy. They will be hunted down and fished out, he said.

“There is no hiding place for smugglers at the Seme border. We have a duty to protect our economy from influx of harmful and prohibited items and we must do that tirelessly,” he said.

It has been a very eventful year for Comptroller Uba, but critics say there’s still room to do more.

Meanwhile, his admirers say the lanky controller has ended the year well despite many odds.

“There’s no better way to show to his boss in Abuja that he’s not tired after 12 months in the saddle. What the controller is saying is that he and his men are not tired and are ready to do more,” Joe Adeyemi, a border analyst said while commenting on seizures for the month of August.

Apart from the five parcel of cannabis sativa, other prohibited items seized in the last two weeks of last month, according to the spokesman of the command, Nuruddeen Abdulllahi are 875x50bags of Foreign parboiled rice with DPV of N15,023,750; 20 parcels of cannabis sativa with street value worth of N516,180; 535 bales of used clothes with DPV of N17,259,769; 65 cartons of poultry products with DPV of N948,333.75.

Others are 269 baskets of fresh tomatoes; one basket of fresh peppers; seven sacks of cucumber and pineapples; 16 baskets of fresh okro (all perishable products coming from Benin Rep. which were earnestly auctioned off) with DPV of N367,471; 137×25 liter jerry cans of PMS with DPV of N287,700; 6x50kg of refined sugar with DPV of N147,640.50 and  12x25litres of vegetable oil with DPV of N131,625.90.

The essence of the seizure Comptroller Uba stated is to “continue to send the right signal to discourage other people from indulging in the despicable act of smuggling.”

South Africa Faces Global Diplomatic Heat

0

The heat is on. What the South African government considered a minor diplomatic spat with Nigeria has inspired other nations in the continent to step up pressure on the President Malama government to rein in sponsors of xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and other immigrants living in the country.

On Tuesday, President Muhammadu Buhari recalled Nigeria Ambassador to South Africa, Kabiru Bala barely few hours after summoning President Malama’s envoy to explain the reasons behind the killings of some Nigerian residents in the Rainbow nation.

Nigeria has also pulled out of the World Economic Forum, WEF which started on September 4 to demand an end to attacks on her citizens.

President Buhari had earlier held a meeting in Abuja with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and Nigeria’s foreign minister, Geoffrey Onyeama  where the decision to recall the ambassador  was reached.

Since then, other countries have also joined in the diplomatic pressure against South African.

Businesses, shops and other valuable properties belonging to foreigners living in the country have been set on fire, in what analysts considers one of the worst onslaught against  non-indigenes in recent days.

Barely few hours after Nigeria said it will no longer attend the summit, other countries such as Rwanda, Malawi, DRC and others have also pulled out.

It’s unclear whether they took the action in solidarity with Nigeria, analysts say.

According to Aljazeera, the South African government has tried to downplay the impact of other African leaders boycotting the summit.

“South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, on a charm offensive to attract $100bn of new investment, tried to limit fallout from the violence, which has rekindled memories of previous deadly attacks on foreigners that also led to reprisals on South African businesses abroad,” the Doha based media giant said.

The WEF was meant to draw funding for the huge infrastructural deficit in the continent, analysts say.

Pressure has mounted in recent days across the continent on the current government in that country to quickly halt the spread of the deadly attacks.

Outbursts against South African interests and business have also grown in other nations across Africa in the last 72 hours.

The situation may even get worse, according to foreign relations experts, as protesters lay siege on MTN, Shoprite and

Multi-Choice offices, major South African franchises in Nigeria.

Skirmishes have been recorded in Lagos, Kano, Abuja, Ibadan and other state’s capital across the country as the political leadership calls for calm.

Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu of Lagos state has sued for peace in the face of protesters’ confrontation with riot policemen who are struggling to restore calm.

International organisations like the United Nations and Amnesty International have blamed the attacks on South Africa’s failure to halt the spread.

South African President has been trying to find solutions to the issue amidst global pressure.

Ramaphosa said on Wednesday that South Africans should never take justice into their own hands against people from other countries.

“We need to quell those incidents of unrest,” Ramaphosa said. “South Africa must be a country where everyone feels safe,” he said, also condemning the recent incidents in which women had been killed.

Meantime, Rwandan President Paul Kagame and Malawi’s Peter Mutharika have yet to an official reason for their decisions to pull out of the WEF.

WEF spokesman Oliver Cann said Kagame and Mutharika had informed conference organisers by Saturday – before the attacks had started – that they could not attend.

Breaking: Okorocha, Wife, Forfeit Properties Worth Billions to EFCC

By Gideon Njoku

For the former Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, it is not just raining, it is pouring. It is like one day one trouble, and it couldn’t be worse.

The EFCC, on Wednesday, announced it has secured a forfeiture order on a number of properties belonging to him and his wife, Nkechi. Also affected in the forfeiture order is a hospital belonging to the former Principal Secretary to Okorocha, Dr Paschal Obi.

The forfeited properties will be handed to the Imo State Government, and its people at the end of the day.

Making the disclosures today at a press briefing, the Head of the EFCC Enugu Zonal office, Usman Imam, disclosed that Prima Facie cases have been established against the three.

The properties which interim forfeiture have been ordered are worth billions of Naira.

They include, Imam revealed, a 16-block of 96 flats and, an eight- bungalow multi-million Naira Estate, a hotel, two schools, shopping plaza, supermarket, and four vehicles. A hospital was, also, forfeited  (belongs to Paschal Obi).

The EFFC is also interested in knowing how the Rochas Foundation and other accomplices, acquired and/or converted some of the properties for personal use.

A case in point is the very large expanse of government land belonging to the Imo Broadcasting Corporation, IBC, which Okorocha took, and converted to that of his Foundation, where a school now situates.

Imam: “We hope to get permanent forfeiture orders on the properties in order to return them   to the people of the state. All the facilities, including the schools will remain functional.

“The Commission would not like to shut them down for the sake of the students and other users.”

Aside from the EFCC action, the Imo State Government is, also, through the Property Recovery Committee it set up, recovering a number of government properties looted, allegedly, by Okorocha,  in the twilight of his government.

MTN Shuts Down Operations Nationwide Till Further Notice

By Uche Mbah

Following reprisal actions by hoodlums who decided to attack South African concerns in Nigeria, MTN Nigeria has decided to suspend operations till further notice.

Recall that South African citizens has been destroying shops and attacking foreigners in unprecedented xenophobic attacks in that former Apatheid country. The South African Police has described that as Pure criminality.

Some Nigerians have gone ahead to destroy South African concerns in Nigeria, particularly Shoprite and MTN. Shoprite was also forced to shut down their retail shops nationwide.

In a release, MTN said they are involved in discussions with various stakeholders to bring the situation under control.

“Over the last day, our facilities, customers and some of our stakeholders have been the subject of attacks in retaliation for the ongoing xenophobia situation in South Africa. We have confirmed reports of attacks in Lagos, Ibadan and Uyo”, the release said..

“While we remain committed to providing uninterrupted services, the safety and security of our customers, staff and partners is our primary concern. All MTN stores and service centres will therefore be closed as a precaution until further notice.

“MTN condemns any acts of violence, prejudice and xenophobia and remains absolutely committed to ensuring a peaceful, harmonious and respectful relationship with all communities in Nigeria and across Africa.

“We are engaging all relevant authorities in this regard and urge them to act swiftly to reduce tensions both in South Africa and Nigeria. We will provide further updates as and when possible.”

There are over a hundred businesses linked to South African nationals in Nigeria, and these have been estimated to employ thousands of Nigerians.

South Africa, analysts believe, is heading to becoming an international pariah status if their xenophobic tendencies are not curtailed. Already, the African Union has condemned the acts, and some African countries, including Nigeria, are set to boycott the World Economic Summit due in the country.

lmo: Okorocha Begs For Protection

0

By Gideon Njoku

For a man whose words were law, who for eight years, ruled his state like an Emperor, the situation former Imo state Governor,  Rochas Okorocha has found himself is strange to him.

For a man who, for those eight years, disobeyed all Court orders, thus, rubbishing the Judiciary, it is an irony that he would run to the same judiciary  to seek protection.

But for Okorocha, now, the Senator representing Imo West, that is the reality of his life now.

Okorocha has just gone to the Federal High Court, Lagos division, asking it for a perpetual injunction  to restrain the Imo State Government, or its agents, from arresting, detaining, harassing, or acting in anyway which could infringe on his rights.

This is sequel to a Citizen’s arrest order placed on him by the Imo State government, anytime he steps into the state.

The order was given after members of a Committee, set up by Government to recover government properties, allegedly, looted by him, were attacked by alleged thugs when they stormed his house for such recoveries. Its Chairman, Jasper Ndubuaku, was stripped, pushed into the gutter, and beaten to a pulp.

The alleged thugs were, allegedly,  quartered at Okorocha’s Spibat residence, from where they trooped out to pounce on Ndubuaku. This was a few days after the former governor, while addressing his supporters in Owerri, ordered them to treat anybody who dared visit for the recovery of alleged looted properties, like an armed robber. They, apparently, obeyed him.

The suit which was filed by Okorocha’s Counsel, Alaezi Nmezi, seeks to declare the government’s  order for his arrest, illegal, unlawful, unconstitutional, and a breach of his fundamental human rights.

Listed as defendants in the suit are: The Imo State government, the Attorney General of the state, the Secretary to the IMSG, and the Chairman of the Property Recovery Committee.

Breaking: Buhari Breaks Record, Recalls High Commissioner To South Africa

0

By Gideon Njoku

For the first time in many years, Nigeria has acted as a great nation that it ought to be. Each time the President Muhammadu Buhari government says, and/or promises that it would protect the lives and properties of Nigerians anywhere, especially, since the Xenophobic attack on foreigners, and Nigerians, in particular, began, the response from not a few Nigerians has been a cynical “for where?”. In fact, trending on Twitter is the hash tag: #WeNoGetPresident

But Buhari has now broken a record.

His government has matched its words with action.

Nigeria, on Wednesday,   recalled its High Commissioner to South Africa, Ambassador Kabiru Bala. It has, also, cancelled its participation in the World   Economic Summit, WES, billed for Cape Town, South Africa. A couple of other African countries, including, Rwanda and Kenya, withdrew their participation in WES on Tuesday. It is billed for September 4 – 6.

The government’s actions, which has attracted applause from not a few Nigerians, is the consequence of the horrific xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in the past three days where South Africans not only looted their shops, razed them, but also killed and maimed many.

This has attracted angry reactions from Nigerians from all works of life. On Tuesday, angry youths trooped out in anger, in a bid to attack and loot what they actually thought were South African concerns in some parts of the country. They include MTN, Shoprite,  and Stanbic IBTC.

The irony,  pointed out a former Nigerian diplomat to South Africa, who spoke to this magazine, is that these concerns are, actually, owned by Nigerians.

For example, MTN is listed on the Nigeria Stock Exchange, NSE, and, the investors are Nigerians. Same goes for the Stanbic IBTC.

SHOPRITE is a mall. The shops there are owned by Nigerians. It is unlike the Nigerian shops in South Africa, where South Africans have no interest.

For Nigeria, therefore, he pointed out, it is  double jeopardy.

They lose in South Africa,  and They lose at home. Head or tail,  Nigerians lost.

However, many say the Federal Government’s action is a breath of fresh air, and want it followed up by asking the South African High Commissioner in Nigeria, Mr Bobby Monroe, to go back to his country for briefing. Some others want Nigeria to suspend its diplomatic relationship with South Africa.

On Monday, SHOPRITE   malls and MTN offices across the country were shut, and under heavy security by the Nigeria Police.

Xenophobia: Nigeria Recalls Ambassador To SA, Pulls Out Of Economic Forum

0

By Uche Mbah

In a belated reaction, Nigeria has pulled out of the Economic forum scheduled to take place in South Africa as a reaction to the xenophobia going on in the former Apartheid enclave. Besides, it has announced the recall of the Nigerian high Commissioner to South Africa, Kabiru Bala, according to Agency reports.

This was after a prolonged closed door meeting between Vice President Osinbajo, Chief of Staff Aba Kyari and President Buhari in Aso rock Wednesday to discuss the xenophobic crisis, this magazine can now report.

Government has faced a barrage of criticisms for not taking action when it matters, and for treating the xenophobic problems with diplomatic levity, a situation that resulted in some miscreants taking the laws into their hands to attack perceived South African interests in Nigeria.

Rwanda, Malawi and democratic republic of Congo were swift in pulling out of the World Economic Forum while Nigeria was toying with sending Nigerian Police to South Africa and waiting till next month for a meeting of Presidents Muhammadu Buhari and Cyril Ramaphosa. But it took a lot of attacks and persuasions for the Minister of foreign affairs, Geofry Onyeama to summon the South African envoy.

Buhari said he is sending an envoy to South Africa to meet with the government to asses the situation.

The criticism were strong on the slow pace of reaction and the presidency , in apparent reluctance, acquiesced to the demands from critics, particularly from the social media.

Angry voices from the National Assembly, including former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, had asked for the severance of diplomatic relations with South Africa.

Musiliudeen Akinremi, another lawmaker, asked for more stringent sanctions against the country. Presidency, however, is asking for compensations which has not been quantified.
it will be recalled that there were reports of the Nigerian high commission in South Africa shut their doors against Nigerians facing xenophobic attacks. But with increased criticisms, they sent a press release asking the victims to come to the embassy to report.
Details of the diplomatic discussions are yet to be made public.

Tokyo 2020: Super Falcons Move Closer To Bag Olympic Ticket, Defeats Algeria

0

By Akinwale Kasali

A sublime finish by Barcelona Football Club striker, Asisat Oshoala, was all the Super Falcons needed to cement its place in the next round of qualification series for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Ticket.

The Thomas Dennerb-coached Falcons had earlier defeated the Algerian ladies in the first leg of the qualifiers 2-0 in Algiers, through Amarachi Okoronkwo and Isma Onuechi strikes, before recording a 1-0 victory in the second leg at the Agege Township Stadium in Lagos.

The Algerians arrived Lagos, Nigeria, prepared to overturn the two goal deficit, but were demoralised after Oshoala’s 68th-minute strike to put the Nigerians in a comfortable lead and a good aggregate score. The visitors needed four goals to overturn the deficit.

Dennerby named a strong attacking squad in the encounter, with Francisca Ordega, Rashidat Ajibade and Oshoala leading it, while Osinachi Ohale and Ebere Orji marshalled the defence.

The defenders had little or no threats from their visitors, as Ohale and Orji were amazing in their coordination of the defence.

With this victory, the Falcons are a step closer to securing one of the three tickets available for grabs, as three countries will represent Africa at the female Soccer Olympic Games.

The draws for the final round of qualification will be done before the weekend runs out. The winner of the final qualification series will hoist the Continent’s flag at the games.

The last time the Falcons featured at the games was at Athens 2004, in Greece.
