Tribunal Upholds Ganduje’s Election

0

By Uche Mbah

The Governorship election tribunal sitting in Kano has upheld the election of governor Umar Ganduje of the All Progressives Congress, APC,  as the duly elected governor of the state. The judgement was delivered by Justice Halima Shamaki, who threw away the petition of the peoples democratic Party, PDP.

Recall that the election of Ganduje was mired in controversy after a rerun election was ordered in some local governments in the state after the PDP candidate was said to be leading. Ganduje was later declared winner after the rerun.

This followed the Osun template, and there were allegations that the magic was brought about using the template of Osun election by the All Progressives Congress.

Details later…

We Have Endured The Pangs Of Pain

It is with gratitude to God and appreciation to “Ndi Imo, Ndi oma”, that I bring you, our greetings on the occasion of the 59th Independence Anniversary Celebration of our great country, Nigeria.

This event, indeed, affords us a great opportunity to pay glowing tributes to our founding fathers; the late Dr. Benjamin Nnamdi Azikiwe, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Sir Ahmadu Bello and Chief Obafemi Awolowo. Here, in the South East Region, we must recall with deep respect, our immediate post-independence leaders like: Sir Akanu Ibiam – the first Governor of the Eastern Region; Dr. Michael Okpara – the regional Premier, as well as such other great leaders as Sir Mbonu Ojike, Chief A. C. Nwapa, and Dr. K.O Mbadiwe amongst others.

For these pioneer leaders and other nationalists across Nigeria, there was no sacrifice too much, nor any price too dear, to pay in the efforts to achieve a self-governing and a sovereign motherland. Today, we are beneficiaries of this great legacy of freedom – the tree of liberty planted and nurtured by the sweat and, in some circumstances, the blood of courageous men and women who resisted colonialism.

However, like every other great nation, Nigeria has bravely endured the pangs of birth of an emergent nation. Indeed, at every point, our resolve to live together as one, strong and united nation has been evident in our courage to confront the odds and resilience to pull back from the precipice. We rose up to the demands of liberation struggle, bounced back from a civil war, and have kept faith with the task of nation-building. Together we have overcome, and shall yet overcome.

As we take stock today, we have cause to thank God for the great progress we have made in nation-building and the abundant human and natural resources that we have been endowed with. Nigeria boasts of a very energetic people, dynamic culture, beautiful landscape, bountiful natural resources and a huge swath of rich agricultural fields, among several

There is, indeed, no state where these blessings have been more evident than Imo State. I am proud to serve a state blessed with a very dynamic, youthful, educated, hardworking and peaceful people. We are a people with great potentials, yearning to be harnessed. Our mission as a government, therefore, is to make our state the beacon of hope for the country and, indeed, for the continent.

To this end, as we celebrate 59 years of liberation from the clutches of colonialism, I enjoin the collective support and sacrifices of our citizens. We are too noble a people to limit ourselves to small aspirations. For this reason, we are engaging all Imolites to map out strategies to harness our huge human and economic resources.

We will base our growth direction on a development agenda currently being put together, known as Imo Growth and Strategic Development Plan. This involves a 5-year Economic Blueprint for our rebuilding process and for restoring Imo to its former glory. Accordingly, we have taken the first sure steps by building a strong institutional framework for Good Governance. We have adopted the ethics of Due Process in all government transactions in keeping with national and global standards.

Imo State now operates the Treasury Single Account (TSA) system which is today boosting our Internally Generated Revenues (IGR).

The Civil Service has taken its pride of place as the engine room for the delivery of government services. Reforms are ongoing to improve service delivery across board, motivate the workforce and right the wrongs inflicted on the psyche of the personnel by eight years of misgovernment.

We have embarked on a comprehensive plan of overhauling our infrastructure which was ruined by shoddy contract awards, quackery and entrenched policy of graft. Works are commencing shortly for the reconstruction of 14 critical roads, both within the Owerri Township and across the State.

It is important to state that we are reviewing our security architecture with a view to ensuring security of lives and properties and restoration of confidence in government.

We take note that we are a state blessed with a huge population of young people with great thirst for knowledge. The least any responsible government can do is to evolve strategies to satisfy this passion. We are therefore, working to restore education to its place of priority as the biggest industry in Imo State.

Information and Communication Technology (ICT), we are aware, is a major driver of change and a bridge to the future. As a result, we have reached out to some global IT firms to design and implement programmes to inculcate IT competency and globally competitive skills in our youths and to make Imo State the technology hub of Nigeria.

In another breath, there is no greater test of development than a people’s ability to feed themselves. To this end, the government has put all machinery in motion to harness our agricultural potentials. Notably, Adapalm, Avutu Poultry Farm and similar establishments, which hitherto were abandoned to rot away, are being revived for optimum production.

In an effort to expand the funding and donor possibilities in rebuilding the state, we as a policy, have been engaging international bilateral and multilateral partners as well as donor agencies. I am glad to say today that these engagements are looking very prospective as they not only now see Imo as one to do business with, but in fact, one to support and assist. From the World Bank to the Department of International Development to the USAID, the French development Agency, AFD, the Commonwealth enterprise group and most recently the UNDP, all have extended a hand in partnership to Imo State.

As far as luring the private sector to see Imo State as not only a destination of choice, but an investor’s haven, we have put a lot of measures in place. We have revamped the moribund ISIPA and set up a dedicated Ease of doing business desk among measures to establish the fact that Imo is open for business.

As you are all aware, one of the foundations of democracy is the participation of the people, at every tier of governance, in the choice of who governs them. We are, therefore, giving expression to Independence by ensuring the devolution of power to the local governments. Consequently, in no distant time, our people would go to the polls, after a long while, for a free, fair and credible election at the local governments.

My good people of Imo State. I must thank you for your resolve to change the narrative of poor governance that became the trademark of Imo State in the immediate past. The task before us is therefore challenging given the pillage experienced in the locust years and damage done to our state institutions. However, things are getting better. Thanks to the crop of patriotic and selfless Imo sons and daughters in the team, the partnership of a very vibrant state legislature and an independent Judiciary. Ours is a collective governance, with no organ of government, nor segment of the population left behind.

As a very educated and enterprising people, I urge us, to show forth the light by the way we carry on the duties and responsibilities of citizenship. I appeal to us all to pray for the peace and progress of our state in particular and our nation in general. Let us also remember Mr. President and our leaders in our prayers. It is for this reason that just two days ago, we committed the nation and the State to prayers at a state service at the Assumpta Cathedral, Owerri.

It is also helpful that we pay our taxes, as and when due and to ensure law and order without which no progress is possible. I appeal to you all, to always come together in your communities to keep our environments healthy and to make Imo clean and green again.

We have put our hands together on the plough of restoration. We cannot look back. We can see the silver-lining behind the dark clouds and with God on our side, we are building a great state and indeed, a nation dedicated to the ideals of unity and faith, peace and progress.

Akpeyi Cost Nigeria AFCON Loss – Rohr

Super Eagles Coach, Gernot Rohr
Super Eagles Coach, Gernot Rohr

By Akinwale Kasali

Super Eagles Coach, Gernot Rohr has, finally, broken his silence 74 days after the 2019 African Cup of Nations Championship in Egypt ended.

Rohr revealed that Super Eagles goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi, was to blame for Nigeria’s semi final  loss to the Desert Warriors of Algeria.

Nigeria lost 2-1 to the Algerians in the dying seconds of the match, after Ishmael Bennaccer was fouled, close to the the 18-yard box of the Super Eagles by Leicester City midfielder, Wilfred Ndidi.

The resultant free-kick was converted by Manchester City’s Riyad Mahrez, to break the heart of Nigerians who had dreamed of a final match against the Teranga Lions of Senegal in Cairo, Egypt.

Rohr said Akpeyi failed to stay behind the wall which led to the goal, despite his players showing every determination to save the ball from ending behind the net.

“Henry Onyekuru even threw himself on the ground to save the ball, but Akpeyi failed to do his part by staying behind the wall. It was really sad”, the Franco-German tactician said.

This revelation was made by Rohr during an interview with a German newspaper.

Since the AFCON third place finish by Nigeria, Rohr has not invited Akpeyi for any match involving the Super Eagles, as new prodigy, Maduka Okoye has replaced the Kaizer Chief’s football club goal tender in the Super Eagles fold.

David-West Insists Oil Subsidy, A Huge Scam; Surprised At Buhari

One of President Muhammadu Buhari’s fiercest supporters in the run-up to the 2015 Presidential election, Prof Tam David-West, says he is surprised at the President’s performance in the petroleum industry. He is disappointed that Buhari has not prioritised the fixing of Nigeria’s oil refineries.

Not doing so, he says, encourages the subsidy on petroleum products which, he insists, is a huge scam. Meaning it is corruption.

David-West was Buhari’s Petroleum Minister during his tenure as Military Head of State. Buhari was removed in a coup by his colleagues, and was succeeded by Ibrahim Babangida, under whom David-West was jailed in a most controversial manner. He was later given a clean bill.

In the run up to the 2015 election, Buhari’s party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, had dismissed the petroleum subsidy as a huge fraud, and was loudly supported by David-West, who also gave the impression that petrol could be sold for as low as N40 per litre , under a Buhari regime,  as against the N97 under the Goodluck Jonathan regime. The alleged subsidy scam in  petroleum products was one of the campaign planks on which the Jonathan government was pilloried.

But since Buhari became President on May, 29, 2015, none has happened . The price of petrol increased to N145 per liter and, the amount spent on oil subsidy has increased instead of decreasing, or completely wiped out – a situation David-West finds difficult to understand.

Speaking to The Guardian, he lays the blame for what he calls the huge subsidy scam; on the failure of the Buhari administration to prioritise the rehabilitation of Nigeria’s oil refineries which he reveals have a combined refining capacity of 445,000 barrels per day.

The former oil Minister says leaving the refineries as they are provides an alibi for those he calls a cabal to continue importing petrol, thus scamming the nation.

More surprising to him, he says, is that Buhari, who was a minister of petroleum, and so not a stranger to the happenings in the sector,  has failed to fix the moribund refineries, to save the country from  fraudulent importation of petroleum products.

The solution, he says, is to invite the original builders of the refineries who would easily get hold of the parts for a complete turn around maintenance.

In the present dispensation, President Buhari doubles as the Minister for Petroleum Resources.

Asaba Mourns The Massacred; Asks Nigeria For Public Apology, Compensation

Prof. Epiphany Azinge

By Gideon Njoku

The Nigerian civil war ended 52 years ago. But for the indigenes of Asaba, Delta State, it is still like yesterday. The pain refuses to pale. They are in  deep mourning. It has been difficult for them to get over the shock, the agony   and the heartbreak which emanated from the massacre of hundreds of their own in cold blood during the war.

So, as they prepare for the activities in  remembrance of their kinsmen so massacred,  they are asking the Federal Government of Nigeria not only to publicly apologise to them, but to pay them compensation.

Reeling out the agony of his people at a press conference, Prof. Epiphany Azinge, President, Asaba Development Union, ADU,  said even though the people could approach the International Criminal Court, ICC, to file for a case of genocide and seek  justice, they prefer to negotiate with the Nigerian Government,  have a closure, and get a proper resting place for their dead.

Said Azinge: “The closure that we seek is the closure of a much more official apology, the closure of adequate compensation to the families of the bereaved as the case may be. But even if we achieve these as we demand, we will continue to remember our fallen heroes.

“Nobody should also imagine that we can be stopped from doing what we are doing because it is totally and fully within our rights so to do.

“The day is not exclusively meant for indigenes of Asaba, but across board where such awkward deaths occurred. It is another way to say never again to such killings, not only for Asaba, but all over the country. Those who suffered such fate in Odi, Benue and other places, particularly Asaba, we are not set to suffer it again”

The memorial activities  begin from Igbeseowe quarters, Asaba, the spot of the massacre of the innocent, on October 7, according Prof. Azinge.

Every Six Minute, A Nigerian Falls Into Poverty-Peter Obi

0

The Vice Presidential candidate under the platform of opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the 2019 elections, Peter Obi, has said that the number of the poor people in Nigeria is more than the poor in China and India combined.

Obi spoke at The Platform, an annual talk-shop organized by the Covenant Center, Iganmu,  every Independence day. Many prominent politicians, including the Vice president Yemi Osinbajo, had graced the platform in the past. Obi is also a regular visitor.

“Today, Nigeria is home to the highest number of poor people living in any nation on earth,” he said.

“If you look at the latest report of UNDP, it says Nigeria has moved from 86 million to 98 million persons living in extreme poverty. We are growing at five percent annually. Every minute, six Nigerians fall into poverty.

“In 2012, India had 276 million people living in extreme poverty. Today, they have less than 76. Nigeria has more people living in extreme poverty than China and India combined.”

Using the “stress Index” to substantiate his claim, Obi said that Nigeria is the most stressed country on earth.

“Today, we are the most stressful country. If you read the stress index, they said we are the most stressful.”

On insecurity, he described Nigeria as the third most insecure country in the world.

“Nigeria is now the third most insecure place to live on the surface of the earth. We are now behind Afghanistan and Syria, and with daily killings, banditry and kidnappings, it is being speculated that Nigeria will soon overtake them.

“Our under-employment and unemployment is one of the worst in the world. People will tell you it is about 25 percent, it is actually over 30 percent. And with over 22 million young people in their productive age doing nothing, it is very worrisome.

“If you come to inequality, Nigeria’s inequality today is the worst; 157/157. We are the worst if you look at the oxfam report. In Nigeria, the richest on percent control 85 percent of the wealth. All other countries are working hard to lower this, in Nigeria it is even worsening.”

Aisha Buhari Sends Independence Message, Ending Months Of Silence

0

First Lady Aisha Buhari has broken her two month old silence Tuesday when he send an Independence message to Nigerians, pledging help to the underprivileged in the society.

For over two months now, the First lady has been silent on National issues, fueling speculations on her whereabouts.

In a series of tweets, she restated her resolve to touch more lives.

“On the occasion of the 59th Independent anniversary of our dear nation, I wish to restate my resolve to touch more lives through Aisha Buhari Foundation and Future Assured Programs. I however continue my call on more privileged Nigerians, the Private Sector and NGOs to do more in the areas of Education, Health, Empowerment and protection of Women and Children. It is my earnest belief that the future is bright”.

She did not, however, make any reference to her long silence from the political arena.

Recall that there has been speculations on her absence in many national events. In most cases she was represented by either aids or appointees of the presidency. This has sparked off speculations that there may have been a reason, with some reports pointing at a possible disagreement with the alleged ruling cabal. It was alleged that since she went for Hajj in Saudi Arabia, she has not returned back to the country. Other reports indicate she has left Saudi Arabia to London where she is now.

But the Presidency has denied any problem with the first lady, saying she is free to go wherever she likes.

The First Lady has been a courageous voice telling truth to power. She was the one who hinted that the presidency is run by two or three people who were not elected. She was conspicuously absent among the entourage that went with President Buhari to the United States General Assembly, UNGA.

Buhari’s Foundations are known to have helped many underprivileged people, particularly in her home state, Adamawa.

Maina: Group Drags AGF, EFCC To Court Over Seized Assets

0

The problem facing the former chairman of the defunct Presidential Task Force on Pension Reform, Abdulrashid Maina has escalated in the last few days.

So is the Ibrahim Magu-led Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, which has been under trenchant criticism for failure to make public the multi-billion naira properties recovered from the pension task team boss.

The magazine learned that Maina who has been embroiled in N2.1 billion pension scam, was arrested by the joint effort of the police and other security agencies detailed to the hotel where he has been hiding.

Few days ago, a high court in Lagos granted the request of the registered trustees of the Centre for Law and Civil Culture, CLCC, for the judicial review of an order of mandamus compelling the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami (SAN), and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to publish the properties recovered from Maina.

CLCC Drags EFCC, AGF To Court

Counsel to the CLCC, Mr Imran A. told the magazine that many Nigerians are not happy with the secret manner the EFCC has been handling properties seized from Maina.

It’s in the public interest to publish whatever has been recovered from the scam, he told the magazine.

The belief is that the Commission which is currently holding the assets in trust for the Nigerian people, has failed to act responsibly because of its failure account for the properties.

Meanwhile, Justice Oluremi Oguntoyinbo, who gave the order, also granted the non-governmental organisation (NGO) extension of time to file an ex-parte application to seek the court’s leave for an order of mandamus against Malami and the anti-graft agency over the recovered items.

The judge made the pronouncements while ruling on the application marked FHC/L/CS/756/2019.

Granting the order Justice Oguntoyinbo said “that time is extended within which the Applicant may file ex-parte application seeking leave for an order of mandamus against the respondent.”

The “leave is also granted” Justice Oguntoyinbo stated “to the applicant to file application for an order of mandamus against the respondents to compel the respondents to release information as to the status and position of the landed properties and other valuables recovered from Absulrashid Maina, the chairman of the Pension Reform Task Force as contained in Applicants letter of 7th January, 2019.”

The properties include 270 landed properties, monies, exotic cars and other valuables recovered by Abdulrashid Maina from the pension looters which property and valuables are kept in the custody of the respmdents, the judge said.

The controversial pension reform boss has been at large for months before EFFC finally arrested him in an Abuja hotel yesterday.

Maina Arrested, To be Tried For Corruption

0

By Uche Mbah

The discredited pension boss, Abdulrasheed Maina, has been arrested by a combined team of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC and the Directorate of State services, DSS, in a hotel hideout where he was hiding on his return to the country from Saudi Arabia. Though he is said to be currently interrogated by the DSS, it is expected that he will be handed over to the EFCC for prosecution over embezzled pension funds.

Recall that there has been controversy over the way and manner he managed the alleged N2 billion pension funds for the biometrics of the pension funds.

During his tenure as pension boss, he was able to use bio metrics to track pension fraud, which included the reduction of Police pension from N1.5 billion to N500 million, a situation that did not augur well with the top police hierachy. This, with other pension curtailing, allegedly resulted in his being a target, though the indictment of a N2.1 billion is yet to be proved in court. With the allegation, he was removed by the Jonathan administration but was reinstated through the backdoor by the Buhari regime when it came to power in 2015. He even was alleged to be pasting posters to contest for governorship in his home state

The EFCC declared him wanted but he went to court and got the wanted toga squashed. EFCC , however, appealed the case.

Maina was said to have been caught in his car by the security agencies. He was holed up in his Bullet proof car within the hotel premises until he was forced out.

The Maina case is an example of how the conflict of interests within the presidency have been playing out in the anti corruption war. Even though some powerful members of the ruling class wanted him out, others have been doing so much to get him arrested. Whichever party wins is a matter of conjecture.

Manchester United, Arsenal Share Spoils, Settle For Draw

0

By Akinwale Kasali

The most anticipated football match between English top clubs, Manchester United and Arsenal at the Theatre of Dreams, Old Trafford ended in a stalemate, with both teams settling for a 1-1 draw.

The teams were cautious and mindful, with most actions of the match at the midfield.

As predicted by the magazine, in the starting line-up of both teams, there was only one change on both sides, as Axel Tuanzebe replaced injured Wan-Bissaka in the Manchester United defense, while youngster, Bukayo Saka was played ahead of Dani Ceballos by coach Unai Emery of Arsenal.

The tense match came into life in the closing stages of the first half, as Saka forced a fantastic save from De Gea, and a rebounding save from Matteo Guendouzi to deny Arsenal.

Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s team turned defense to attack from a resulting Arsenal corner kick, and stretched the Arsenal defense with a counter attack, resulting to a Mc Tominay sublime finish to give the vociferous Old Trafford fans something to cheer about into the break.

On resumption of the second half, Arsenal lads came out smoking shooting from  every cylinder, before Gabonese forward, Pierre Emerick Aubameyang, beat the offside trap to score the equaliser for Arsenal, though, it took the intervention of the Video Assistant Referee, VAR, review before the goal stood.

Arsenal created more chances to take the lead, but the Manchester United defense with its goalkeeper were outstanding.

Marcus Rashford could have  given Manchester club the win in the closing stages of the match from a set piece, but it was superbly saved by Arsenal’s goalkeeper, Bernd Leno, to keep the game at 1-1 apiece.

With the result, Arsenal moved to the fourth position on the Barclays English Premier League log, while Manchester United move to the ninth position.
