Nigeria’s Economy In A Bad Shape Says IMF; Countries Without Crude Oil Doing Better

IMF Position on Nigeria economy

By Akinwale Kasali

The International Monetary Fund, IMF, says the Nigeria economy has nose-dived to an appalling State since the crash of oil prices in 2014.

The World Financial Body stresses that Nigeria, an oil-dependent economy, has continued to perform worse than countries dependent on other exports.

The IMF disclosed this in its policy paper on macro-economic developments and prospects in Low-Income Developing Countries, LIDCs, a paper it said its executive directors deliberated on on 13th November 2019.

LIDCs comprise of 59 IMF member countries specifically defined by income per capita level below a certain threshold (fixed at $2,700 in 2016).

“The LIDCs are expected to record average annual growth of some five per cent in 2018-2019, a reasonably robust performance against the backdrop of loss of momentum in the global economy,” the organisation stated.

“Looking ahead, growth is expected to pick up marginally in 2020 and beyond, although risks to the global economy threaten this outlook.

“Debt levels in several countries (notably fuel exporters) fell sharply on fiscal tightening and recoveries of GDP and/or real exchange rates (which boosted dollar-equivalent denominators). An important exception is Nigeria, where debt to GDP ratio continued to increase.

The IMF added that the number of countries facing serious debt challenges, as assessed by bank-fund debt sustainability assessments, has risen only marginally since 2017, after increasing sharply in the preceding four years, in which Nigeria is one of.

The debt profile of the nation has risen drastically since the President Muhammadu Buhari administration took over the saddle.

The Fund also affirmed as follows: “Among fuel exporters, current account deficits narrowed over the period, helped by recovery in export revenues — except in Nigeria, where recovery in import levels dominated a transitory increase in export revenues in 2018 on the back of higher oil prices.

“Among fuel exporters, the median deficit fell from 5.4 per cent in 2017 to a projected 2.3 per cent in 2019 (below the 3.2 per cent median in 2010–14), with tight financing constraints limiting expenditure growth.

The body said Nigeria is an outlier in this context, with the fiscal position, though improving, still significantly weaker than in 2010-2014 (the era of high oil prices).

“While spending levels are projected to increase across commodity exporters as a group, the increases are concentrated in less than half of the 30 countries (such as Nigeria, Uzbekistan and Sudan), with spending levels falling in most of the other countries (Côte d’Ivoire, Republic of Congo and Mauritania).”

The Buhari-led administration has, however, continued to radiate optimism in the direction of the economy, hinging its confidence in such economic indicators as those supplied by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). The bureau’s latest figures note that Nigeria’s economy grew by 2.28% in real terms in the Q3 2019, relative to 2.12% in Q2 and 2.10% in Q1.

Hundreds Of Birds Fall From the Sky After 5G Test In Netherlands

By Uche Mbah

After a 5G test in The Hague in the Netherlands, birds were seen tumbling down from the sky in their hundreds in a mysterious dying that left investigators worried, according to reports monitored in Lagos.

The 5G technology has been trailed by controversies since its emergence as a mobile technology driven by the Chinese Tech Giant, Huawei. Some tend to see the concerns raised over the technology as propaganda war resulting from the Trade war between the united states and China. But many stringent voices have sang of the dangers of the new technology. Despite this, many countries are latching into it.

Nigeria has muted that they will embrace the 5G technology, though the teledensity of those currently into the 4G technology has been reported to be very low.

According to the reports by Truth Revolution, only a few birds tumbled from the sky after the initial test of the technology to ascertain it’s harmfulness. Within days, over 297 birds have died in the parks of Hague.

Ducks were seen to try to escape the radiations by immersing their heads into water.

In Norway, cows were observed to behave abnormally at the 5G mast areas.

The 5G network uses the same Electromotive Force, or EMF, used by the Pentagon Crowd control system.

“The roll out of 5G technology is a ‘massive bio-experiment’ that will have ‘disastrous consequences’ for the human race, according to the first major university study into the controversial wireless service — and a coalition of 200 leading scientists and doctors are calling for an urgent stop to the roll out.

“‘5G technology is a very real danger,’ warns Dr. Moskowitz, a public health professor at the University of California. ‘The deployment of 5G, or fifth generation cellular technology, constitutes a massive experiment on the health of all species,’ he said, according to the reports.

Now the tumbling birds appear to be proving him right.

The rumor that former head of state, Ibrahim Babangida is dead has been debunked by the ex-military dictator who ruled the country from 1985 to 1993.

This is not the first time that the Minna, Niger state born Army General has been rumored to be dead.

In a statement by his spokesman, Kassim Afegbua, the ex-military leader said he’s hale and hearty and that the news about his demise should be totally disregarded.

“It has become consistent fake news for quite some time now wishing our own IBB, the one we easily refer to as the last don of Nigeria politics, dead.

The fake news bill would be a suitable response to this category of fake news carrier.”

The statement further said “Babangida is very much alive and bubbling. He just started attending to friends and associates who came to see him today, Sunday, December 15, 2019 right here at his Minna Hilltop mansion. He is full of life and in his characteristic bubbling mood.

May Allah forgive those who wish Babangida dead.

God is the giver and taker of life, not humans. Death, as the irrevocable end of all creation, will surely come to everyone some day and at the appointed time and hour, but to deliberately spread fake news and wish someone dead, is to take humanity to another bizarre level.

May Allah forgive them,” said the statement.

He added that Babangida “by the special grace of Allah, the omniscient and omnipotent one,’’ shall live to fulfil his journey and destiny in life, to the consternation of those who are always wishing him dead, adding this is about the third time this year.

The former military ruler thanked those who took time to reach out to him, home and abroad, to find out the truth.

“We thank you all for your love, care and concern. May Allah grant us all good health, sound mind and long life Amin,’’ he said.

By Uche Mbah

The Hiltop Mansion, Minna, of former Military President, Ibrahim Babangida, Popularly known as IBB,has been playing host to a troop of visitors after an online medium published his death on Sunday. The death rumor was, however, found out to be fake news.

An obscure online medium published that the Former president had died. Many social media platforms latched on to it and circulated the news. His spokesperson, Kassim Afegbua, later put up a press release to address the issue, calling the news Fake News.

This is the third time the Retired general will be rumored dead.

After the last rumor, when he went to Germany for medical treatment, Babangida had said that he is getting used to rumors of his death. “As a Muslim it is written that every human being shall die and get sick”, he had said then.

Afegbua said in a statement: “It has become consistent fake news  for quite sometime now wishing our own IBB, the one we easily refer to as “The last Don” of Nigerian politics dead.

“The fake news bill would be a suitable response to this category of fake news carriers.

“IBB is very much alive and bubbling. He just started attending to friends and associates who came to see him today, Sunday, 15th December, 2019, right here at the Hiltop Mansion. He is full of life and in his characteristic bubbling mood”, he said.

Prominent Nigerians were flocking to the Hiltop Mansion to pay homage to the great leader whom Nigerians fondly called Maradona.

First to visit him was former senate President, David Mark, who was his co traveler when he was a military President. David mark held Ministerial position under him, and was a member of the highest ruling body in the Country, the Armed Forces ruling Council. He went there with Tunde Ogbeha, another of their compatriots. Ogbeha, who was a military administrator of Kogi state, was one of those regarded as “IBB boys”.

They went into a closed door meeting with the former President, where the press were not invited.

Other prominent Nigerians were either confirming his being alive through phone calls or direct visit.

“Buhari Gradually Becoming A Dictator” – Anthony Cardinal Okogie

0

By Akinwale Kasali

Former President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, and retired Roman Catholic Archbishop,  Anthony Cardinal Okogie, has taken a swipe at President Muhammadu Buhari. He called President Buhari  a dictator, following Buhari government’s failure to respect the Judiciary.

Okogie said the nation is gradually returning to the era of military dictatorship where there was flagrant disregard to the rule of law.

He decried the frequent disobedience to court orders by the Buhari administration, saying it has ridiculed the Judiciary.

The former Lagos Archbishop,  in a statement,  titled, ‘Corruption and Repression’, said that our nascent democracy is gradually returning  to military rule.

“The painful and sad reality we face is that we live in a country where leaders are very distant from the led. We need leaders who are neither blind to the suffering of the people, nor deaf to their cries; leaders who listen to the people, leaders who have the courage to be humble, and who are, therefore, ready to admit that they are wrong when they are wrong.

“In a democracy, those who govern are chosen by the people to represent the people. And if they are to represent the people, they must listen to the people. Not only do true democrats listen, they also are not afraid of dissenting opinions. They do not arrogate to themselves the power to accuse, arrest, prosecute and convict. But can we candidly say we have democrats at the helm of affairs in this country at this point in time?

“How can we claim to live in a democracy when presidential spokespersons tell us the presidency is always right? It is important to remind our political leaders at the federal, state and local levels of government that they cannot enforce laws if they cannot obey the law.”

He  stressed that, “If the executive disobeys court rulings, and if it intimidates and humiliates the judiciary, then we are back to the era when a military junta made laws and interpreted them without any regard for fundamental human rights. We have returned to a sinful past when citizens could be abducted and locked up in detention without trial under the pretext of acting in the interest of national security.”

“But Nigerians do not want military rule anymore. Having experienced two painful bouts of military dictatorship, two periods in Nigeria’s history when men in uniform, trained and paid to protect the land and its people, visited untold brutality on the civilian population, we all must resolve to be responsible for protecting democracy in this country,” he stated.

The Archbishop went down memory lane, recalling that military dictatorship plunged the nation into an avoidable civil war.

He added that the war could have been avoided if political actors had adhered faithfully to democratic principles, the failure, however, provided opportunistic elements in the Nigerian military with an excuse for mass murder.

“Innocent lives were lost before and during that war. A month to the 50th anniversary of the end of that war, factors that led to the war are being reawakened. Our democracy is in danger because of corruption and dictatorship,” he said.

Edo APC Crisis: IGP is Conniving With My Enemies – Oshiomhole

0

By Akinwale Kasali

These are trying times for the All Progressives Congress, APC, National Chairman, Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole.

Trouble stares at him from every quarter. The latest is at the corner of the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu.

He alleges that Adamu  planned  to set him up in the crisis which has engulfed the APC in Edo state. Worse, he said,  the IGP is dining with his enemies, in this case, Edo state governor, Godwin Obaseki. Instrutively, Obaseki was his ally.

Oshiomhole made the allegation while explaining his absence at the defection rally of Osagie Ize-Iyamu, governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the 2016 election in Edo state, to the APC.

The defector from the opposition, Ize-Iyamu, in connivance with Oshiomhole, had planned to announce his carpet crossing to the ruling party, APC, by staging a mega rally.  But the political tension  in the state caused by the sour relationship between Oshiomhole and Obaseki, forced  the IGP to put the rally on hold. The  security situation in the state was rising by the minute, and a number of people were already injured.

The decision to put the mega rally on hold by the IGP was,

Mohammed Adamu - Police IG
Mohammed Adamu – Police IG

also, based on  complaints by the Edo State government, through Philip Shaibu, the Deputy governor of Edo State. Shaibu visited the Force headquarters where he told the police authorities that the rally was “a mere disguise to disrupt public peace”.

The administration of Godwin Obaseki, also, placed a ban on political rallies in the state, till further notice.

While speaking with reporters at his residence in Benin city, Oshiomhole said he gathered that the police wanted to put him in trouble, and planned to set him up.

In obedience to the IGP’s order, Oshiomhole decided to stay home. But sources said he was placed under a house arrest. He strongly denied that.

He said: “I saw that story planted by the Government House in Edo that I was placed under house arrest. That is not true I decided not to go to the venue because the police in Edo and the IG want to set me up and create a situation where they will kill people, then they will attribute it to me. I stayed away from the rally to avoid any form of bloodshed.

“The leadership quality of a man is tested under excessive provocation. If it was my old self, I will not only go there, but I will make a speech that, by now, the battle line is drawn. As National Chairman, I had to pay the price by abstaining from going there so that I deny the IG and Edo Police Command the plan to go and kill people and blame it on me.

“I am embarrassed that the IGP will write me a letter informing me, on the strength of my application, which I informed him of our intention to do a rally. We informed police not for licence so that they can earn their salary. It is not for them to grant permission.

“I thought, as National Chairman, I should be formal. I delivered the letter myself so that it can be more personal.

“He conveyed to me that he has directed the police to provide full security so that the exercise can have full security. The IG knows the political value of Pastor Ize-Iyamu joining us. What I am not able to understand is how the same IG could be alleged to send a letter to Philip Shaibu that the rally will not hold”.

The former Edo State Governor, however, said he was happy that the rally was held successfully and that the APC was poised to win future elections in the state.

“I am from here (Edo State) and I am proud. It is a shame on Edo Police Command that people in broad day light thought they can intimidate me from arriving Benin. The police supervised and superintendent over this violence, even as the IG has given me a letter. As at that time no other letter has been issued,” he said.

“For police to claim they are unable to secure the Airport road, as reporters, I ask you to explain what Edo people went through yesterday. Benin was locked down just to oblige the Deputy governor or the government of Edo State.”

We want the Bank to do more in empowering our people and engage in CSR activities. Ondo Kingdom and our people are ready to collaborate more with the Bank, especially in the area of support to Small and Medium Scale Enterprises. We pray that FCMB will continue to grow and remain a partner in progress’’.

Aisha Buhari Lashes Mamman Daura, Garba Shehu

0

By Akinwale Kasali

The clash that has ensued for months between the First Lady, Aisha Buhari, and her husband’s uncle and friend, Mamman Daura has further escalated.

Mrs. Buhari has not hidden her anger over the alleged excesses of  of Mamman Daura.

The outspoken First Lady, in a statement issued and signed by her, carpeted Presidential Spokesperson, Garba Shehu and Daura for interfering in her affairs and that of her family.

In her words; “Nigeria’s development is hinged on the ability of public officials to execute their mandates professionally, and to be shining examples in their various areas of endeavor. It is not a good sign when officials abandon their responsibility and start clutching at straws.

Mamman Daura
Mamman Daura

“As spokesperson of the President, he has the onerous responsibility of managing the image of the President and all the good works that he is executing in the country. Rather than face this responsibility squarely, he has shifted his loyalty from the President to others who have no stake in the compact that the President signed with Nigerians on May 29, 2015 and 2019. To make matters worse, Mr. Shehu has presented himself to these people as a willing tool and executioner of their antics, from the corridors of power even to the level of interfering with the family affairs of the President. This should not be so.

“The blatant meddling in the affairs of a First Lady of a country is a continuation of the prodigal actions of those that he serves. We all remember that the chief proponent appropriated to himself and his family a part of the Presidential Villa, where he stayed for almost 4 years and when the time came for him to leave, he orchestrated and invaded my family’s privacy through a video circulated by Mamman’s Daughter, Fatima, the public was given the impression that on arrival into the country I was locked out of the villa by Mr. President.

“Garba Shehu as Villa Spokesperson, knew the truth and had the responsibility to set the records straight, but because his allegiance is somewhere else and his loyalty misplaced, he deliberately refused to clear the air and speak for the President who appointed him in the first place. Consequently, his action has shown a complete breakdown of trust between the First Family and him. Mr. Shehu was privy and part of the plan and it’s execution and he was shocked when he realized that I had publicized my return to Nigeria on October 12, 2019 and cleared the air on the many rumors that took over social media, a job he was supposed to do but kept mute to cause more confusion and instability for his Principal and his family.

Garba Shehu
Garba Shehu

“Garba then, vented his anger on the National Television Authority (NTA) Management insisting that the media crew to my office must be sacked. He succeeded in getting them suspended for doing their job. I had to intervene to save the innocent staff from losing their means of livelihood by involving the Department of State Services (DSS) in order to ascertain roles played by key actors in the saga. It is at this late hour that I recall, sadly, that it was the same Garba Shehu who claimed that the government will not allow office of the First Lady to run. He was later to confirm to one of my aides that he was instructed to say so by Mamman Daura and not the President.

“This antic attracted the anger of Nigerian women. He didn’t realize the fact that First Lady’s office is a tradition which has become an institution. Today, even without a budget, I am able run my humanitarian programmes. In saner climes, Garba Shehu would have resigned immediately after going beyond his boundaries and powers”.

Mrs. Buhari stressed further that the attitude of Daura and Shehu can no longer be condoned.

“The latest of his antics was to wage a war on my family through an orchestrated media campaign of calumny by sponsoring pseudo accounts to write and defame my children and myself.

“Based on Garba Shehu’s misguided sense of loyalty and inability to stay true and loyal to one person or group, it has become apparent that all trust has broken down between him and my family due to the many embarrassments he has caused the Presidency and the first family.

“We all have families to consider in our actions and therefore it is in the best interest of all concerned for Garba Shehu to take the advice of the authority, given to him sometimes in the first week of November, 2019”, she concluded.
