The Federation International Football Association, FIFA, in its December, 2019, ranking put the Super Eagles of Nigeria as the 31st in the world.

The national team garnered 1692 points to place the third best team in Africa behind Senegal and Tunisia who were placed first and second best  in Africa.

The Coach Gernot Rohr Super Eagles has been dilly-dallying in the FIFA Ranking during the year, and moved up the ladder from 42nd position in the beginning of the year, to end the year in the 31st position.

During the 2019 African Cup of Nations Championship in Egypt, the Super Eagles ended the campaign with a third place finish having missed out in two previous edition of the African showpiece.

In the year under review, the Super Eagles recorded  100 percent  in the 2021 AFCON qualifiers, defeating Squirrels of Benin Republic in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State and the Crocodiles of Lesotho in Maseru, winning 2-1 and 4-2 respectively.

The team played series of friendly matches in 2019, with former world champions, Brazil, playing a 1-1 draw in Singapore; 2-2 draw with Ukraine in Kyiv; defeated the Pharaohs of Egypt 1-0 at the Stephen Okechukwu Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State.

Super Eagles of Nigeria

The nation ushered in 2019 with high hopes in all sporting events it was to participate in. The hopes were really high even though everybody knew it was an election year, and so, a possibility of a change in baton might take place.

In football, the Super Eagles of Nigeria was to participate in the 2019 African Cup of Nations Championship in Egypt, the Super Falcons was also participating in the FIFA World Cup in France, while in age grade competitions, the Golden Eaglets had already qualified for the FIFA Under-17 World Cup Championship in Brazil, likewise its Under-20 FIFA World Cup Championship in Poland.

The nation was represented in all the soccer events of the year both in Africa and around the world, with high hopes of the nation recording successes in the competitions.

Sadly, the Super Eagles failed to record a fourth AFCON success, returning home with a bronze medal after a third place finish.

The Super Falcons managed to scale through the group stage with a paltry three points, qualifying as one of the best placed teams in the 24-team Championship.

The Thomas Dennerby coached Super Falcons were booted out of the second round, losing 3-0 to Germany.

In the cadet Championship in Brazil and Chile, both the Golden Eaglets and the Flying Eagles were sent packing In the second round, losing to Holland and Senegal 3-1 and 2-1 respectively.

The Home-based Super Eagles, coached by Imama Amakapabo, failed to qualify for the 2020 African Nations Championship, CHAN, to be hosted in Cameroon, losing to the Hawks of Togo 4-3 on aggregate, after performing below expectations at the West African Football Union Championship, WAFU, in Ivory Coast.

Amakapabo also failed to lead the Nigeria Under-23 Dream Team VI to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, as the team failed at the AFCON Under-23 Championship in Egypt.

The Nigerian team paraded a lot of foreign based players to prosecute the Championship but lost 1-0 to Ivory Coast, defeated Zambia 3-1 and Drew 0-0 with South Africa to push from the tournament

Also at the 2019 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Championship in Paraguay, the Super Sand Eagles were humiliated at the competition losing all its three group matches 11-1, 6-5 and 8-2 respectively.

In Athletics, Nigeria contingents to Doha, Qatar for the World Athletics Championship, performed woefully at the competition.

The Blessing Okagbare- captained Team Nigeria were not impressive all through the competition, returning from the two-week event with just a bronze medal, courtesy Ese Brume, in the Long Jump event.

Nigerian athletes in the International Association of Athletics Federation, IAAF, meetings for the year 2019, were not impressive in their outings, as their outings in the meets were poor.

Nigeria’s Rugby team and the Cricket team have been wobbled and fumbled, as both have been relegated to the lower tiers in the ranking.

The Nigeria Basketball Female team, D’Tigeress were outstanding at the African Basketball Championship in Senegal, winning the trophy and also qualifying for 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

The male Basketball team, D’Tigers came second in the Africa Basketball Championship, and are presently jostling for the Olympic ticket via playoff.

No doubt, 2019 was not a fantastic Sporting year for the nation. Attention has now been shifted to 2020, as the nation will be battling to get the 2021 AFCON ticket and all age grade competitions for male and female.

Arteta To Be Confirmed Arsenal Coach

By Akinwale Kasali

Mike Arteta is set to take over the saddle as the new coach of North London Club Side, Arsenal Football Club of England.

The choice of Arteta to take over the affairs of the team has been in the offing since Arsene Wenger bidded the Club goodbye at the end of the 2017/2018 season. Wenger was the Club’s Coach for 20 years.

Arteta has been an understudy to Manchester City Football Club Manager, Pep Guardiola since 2015, when the fellow Spaniard joined the Manchester Club. Arteta was his Assistant.

The Gunners, as Arsenal Football Club is refer to, has been dilly-dallying in the league this season,  failing to win any competitive match since October.

The sack of Unai Emery came after the 2-1 loss to Eintracht Frankfurt Football Club of Germany in the UEFA Europa League at the Emirates Stadium. The club has also been non impressive  in the league and domestic competition.

Former Arsenal player and second Assistant to Emery, Freddie Ljungberg, was appointed as interim coach, but he was able to record just a win against West Ham United at the London Stadium.

He recorded two loses to Brighton Hove Albion Football Club and Manchester City, losing 2-1 and 3-0 respectively, both at the Emirates Stadium, home front of the Club.

The choice of Arteta as the new Manager of the Club has been applauded with a take home of Five Million Pounds per annum, but the lack of confidence, coherence, team play, depth, fighting spirit and zeal of the team will be a major challenge for Arteta.

His first match in the saddle will be against Everton Football Club at Goodison Park, followed by a home game against London rivals, Chelsea Football Club and Manchester United Football Club.

Arsenal is to face Leeds United in the FA Cup and also faces Olympiakos of Greece In the knockout phase of the UEFA Europa League.

Nash Kroenke, the Head of the Arsenal board is bent on giving Arteta the right and conducive environment to operate in his new role, which many believes could propel the team for greatness.

Arsenal is presently languishing in the 10th position on the Barclays English Premier League table, their worst start in a season over 40 years ago.

The team has recorded just five wins, five loses and seven draws this season and minus three goal difference.

Arteta played for the Gunners for five years, winning two FA Cup trophies and two Charity Shield.

Sterling Bank, Others Restrategise After Moody’s Ratings

Fidelity, FCMB, GT Bank Remain Stable

By Bayo Bernard

Nigeria’s financial sector is still grappling with recent bombshell by global rating firm, Moody Investors Service which declared some Nigeria banks negative for investors.

But financial analysts informed the magazine that the firm had intended to put the banks on their toes in the new year, so that they can begin to work on the negatives and avoid the pitfalls of the past that drowned many Nigerian banks.

‘When you look at the report very well you will realize that it focused on salient governance issues which will determine the survival of any lender,” Patrick Omole, a financial expert told the magazine.

Moody, had in its latest report warned those planning to invest in Nigerian banks to be very cautious in the year 2020.

It listed some few banks in the country to be risky for investors while endorsing others as good investment portfolios.

The investors’ advisory had months ago affirmed Nigerian banks stable in the face of tight economy policy of the Buhari administration and global economic spat between two largest world economies, the United States and China.

But Moody has now declared the outlook of many top tier banks in the country vulnerable and unstable, warning investors to be careful where they invest their money in the year 2020.

According to the firm, Sterling Bank will come under serious pressure in coming months as its revenue generation size will be sliced.

But authorities in the bank told the magazine that more is being done by the management to refocus the lender as one of the profitable and reliable banks in the country.

“The gains of the last two years will be consolidated. More focus will be on expanding the client size and increase our capital base,”  the source said.

Factors that have affected the tier two bank ratings include low level capital levels, high foreign currency loans, its relatively small size and tiny clientele, Moody said in the report.

Moody stated in the report that tier two banks such as FCMB, Union Bank, Fidelity and others in this category will face some challenges, however, assuring that their survival ratings is very high.

For Fidelity and others, the global rating body said more pressure are likely to be experienced due to weak efficiency, moderate profitability, foreign currency funding positions and other factors, but affirmed that these banks will still weather the storm.

On Fidelity Bank, Moody said the bank’s b3 BCA shows relatively tight funding conditions, due to high, but improving, loan to customer deposit ratio and high proportion of foreign currency loan.

It’s however good news for Guarantee Trust Bank Plc. whose ratings has been declared very robust.

GT Bank’s rating b2 BCA, Moody said, is very high due to the bank’s robust earnings generation capacity, high capital buffers, high liquidity buffers and robust predominantly deposit funded balance sheets.

The bank also boasts of strong franchise due to high earning margins and low credit and operational costs.

For UBA, Moody stated that the bank possess strong outlook due to its pan-Africanism warned that over confidence could affect its ratings if not checked.

Moody said UBA and Zenith Bank have remained strong despite seeming challenges, adding that the two banks are way out of risk for prospective investors and customers, but warned UBA to recline from risky business funding.

“These strengths are counterbalanced by UBA’s rising, although still moderate, dependence on confidence-sensitive funding,” Moody said.

According to Moody, First Bank faces more risks due to its large chunk of Non-performing Loans, NPL, but the challenge is mitigated due to its large stocks of liquid assets.

FrieslandCampina WAMCO Introduces App For Dairy Farmers

0

By Akinwale Kasali

In line with global trend and improved productivity, two Nigerian entrepreneurs (former students of the University of Ibadan) and three research students from the Delft University of Technology,  the Netherlands, have developed a mobile software application to help dairy farmers perform better.

The App named the ‘mDairy App’ according to the company’s spokesperson and Executive Director, Corporate Affairs, Ore Famurewa,   is being made in partnership with FrieslandCampina WAMCO.

“The three students from the Delft University of Technology and the mDairy app co-founders are collaborating to support local dairy farmers at our different Dairy Development Programme (DDP) sites” Famurewa said.

The Dutch students are Margot Ridderikhoff, Jaap Dechering and Betsie Loeffen while the mDairy’s co-founders are Oyewale Abioye and Gbadegesin Alawode.

In 2017, FrieslandCampina WAMCO partnered with the Dutch-Nigerian Students Business Challenge, an initiative of the Dutch Foreign Affairs Ministry and sponsored by corporations mainly of Dutch origin. The initiative aims to address challenges in Nigeria’s health, energy and food sectors.

Having successfully completed and presented relevant business solutions, a new team of three students attached to FrieslandCampina WAMCO came to Nigeria recently to join Oyewale and Gbadegesin in order to deploy mDairy App, which DDP farmers can use with little or no challenge.

To ensure that all farmers from various socioeconomic backgrounds are integrated, the team is also developing an interactive voice message service which would facilitate easy access.

“The mDairy app once deployed is designed to serve as one-stop-shop for DDP farmers’ information needs” Famurewa explained.

Senator Uwajimogu: “God Must Be Having Fun”

0

By Comfort Obi

Initially, the news of the sudden death of Senator Ben Uwajimogu, Wednesday morning, was unbelievable. So, many people dismissed it as fake.

The many versions of the exact place he was said to have died did not make the story any easy to believe.

Some people said Abuja. Others said Dubai. And there was also the Indian version. Nobody could agree on anything, including how he died.

Confusion reigned.

He slumped in his bathroom while taking his birth. He fell down from his bed and died. He was on his way to work to when he died. He died in his car.  And many other stories.

In deed, one version insisted he was resuscitated in a hospital, and so alive.

Some consolation.

Later, only four things were right. The Senator died. He died suddenly. He died in Abuja. He died of heart-related ill-health.

Reactions were like claps of thunder. Why not?

The man was on the floor of the Senate on Tuesday and participated in the activities of the day. In deed, he had, also, seen off (some say, driven) a friend of his to the Abuja airport on Tuesday. And had a meeting, same day, with one of his Counsels during the Senatorial Election petitions.

As the news broke, Imo State entered into shock. Uwajimogu was lively, fun to be with, and carried his huge frame with dignity.

Wednesday morning, the Counsel who disclosed that one of them had met him in Abuja,  entered into shock, almost. Another Counsel reacted, almost, sheepishly: “For what?” “Death suddenly came calling,” a colleague replied him. Yet, he repeated the question: “For what?”

A number of his colleagues in the Senate, led by the Senate President, Dr Ahmed Lawan, also, reacted in shock. “Not possible”, said the newly sworn-in Senator Smart Adeyemi. ” I was with him on Tuesday, and we were discussing Nigeria”, he said.

The All Progressives Peoples Party, APC, Imo State branch, whose member, he was exclaimed: “We have lost a powerful voice, a loyal party man”.

But the reaction, from where the headline of  this report emanated, was from Dr. Chris Asoluka, a former member of the House of Representatives and, a former Imo Commissioner for  Finance. In a sombre mood at his Ihiagwa, Owerri-West home , mourning his immediate elder sister, and preparing for a Service of Songs in her honour, Asoluka first sighed, then  smiled, a mirthless smile, and said to no one in particular: “Uwajimogu, God must be having fun, picking us one by one. He is telling us we are nothing. That life is nothing”. Nobody responded, just silence, as if wondering: Will I be next?

Uwajimogu’s foray into politics was a combination of success, fun and anxiety.

A former powerful Speaker of the Imo House of Assembly, he was formerly of the PDP and at a time, during the Governor Rochas Okorocha administration, when he jumped ship with him to APC, doubled, unofficially, as the Commissioner for Works.

He went to the Senate, later, and was an ally of Okorocha. Okorocaha irredeemably fell out with him,  as he also did with some others – Senators Hope Uzodinma, Osita Izunaso, Ifeanyi Ararume. Between them, and the APC National Leader, Adams Oshiomhole, they helped deliver Imo from Okorocha’s clutches, by making sure he did not impose his son-in-law, Ugwumba Uche Nwosu, as APC’s Governorship candidate in the 2019 Governoship election.

Uwajimogu’s  second tenure to the Senate was not smooth. He was amongst the last to be sworn-in after a couple of months, because of a confusion in INEC over who actually won the Imo North Senatorial seat.

His Constituents are, at once, shocked and confused. Aside losing a good representative at the Senate, they will now be faced with a rerun election, which by Nigerian standard, is bound to be cantankerous.

Uwajimogu’s death couldn’t have come at a worse time. An irony of sorts. He was not a lawyer, but was well-known in legal circles in Imo. His death came on the day the Imo Judiciary was holding a session in honour of their late colleagues, husband and wife  – Barr. Okey and Barr (Mrs) Anuli Okey-Ehieze. Mrs Ehieze had died earlier. While her husband was preparing for her burial, he slumped and died, three days later.

As soon as Uwajimogu heard that Ehueze slumped, he offered to fly him out, immediately, for treatment. That was when it was found out that Barr. Ehieze’s international passport had expired. A renewal was quickly arranged. He got it within 48 hours. Unfortunately, he died the next day.

Uwajimogu was billed to play a prominent role at their funeral. Particularly, he was expected to help see their children- four of them, all in the university, reading medicine and law – through school, it is said.

Now, the Senator lies dead,  24 hours to the funeral of the Ehiezes.

Turkish Airlines: We are Monitoring Compliance, Says Adurogboye

0

The General manager, Public Affairs, Sam Adurogboye, has confirmed meetings with the Turkish airlines last week but said that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA is monitoring the compliance to the directives to the Airlines by the agency.

“We met on Friday the 13th of December 2019, after we have given the Airline an Ultimatum to comply with our directives by 16th. We reached an agreement with the Airlines to comply with our directives. We are monitoring their compliance”, Adurogboye said.

With this, the clearance of the backlog of excess luggage is being effected. There appears to be no fresh complaints from passengers.

Recall that NCAA had suspended Turkish Airlines operations in Nigeria.

In a letter dated Dec. 11, with reference no. NCAA/DG/12/16/60 signed by the Acting Director General, NCAA, Capt. Sidi Abdullahi, it said the suspension was with effect from Dec. 16.

NCAA had insisted the suspension will not be lifted until the airline was prepared to operate into the country with the right aircraft size and eliminate baggage arrival delays to passengers.

But with the meeting with the Airline, the sanction was lifted as the Airline has agreed to instantly upgrade the Boeing 737 – 800 to a larger Airbus A330 and Boeing 737 – 900. This is expected to accommodate more baggage allowance and return baggage along with passengers without their having to wait for days to receive their luggage.

President Trump Impeached, But Not Likely To Be Removed From Office

0

By Uche Mbah

President Donald trump of the United states has been impeached by the American House headed by Nancy Pelosi, though it is unlikely that the Republican dominated Senate will remove him from office by ratifying the impeachment by the lower house.

With this, trump has become the third US President to be impeached, behind presidents Johnson and  Clinton.

The House voted almost entirely along party lines to impeach him at 230/197 votes, with Republicans trailing behind the Democrats.

The Impeachment sets the stage for the senate trial next January. It is, however, expected that the Senate may turn down his possible removal from office.

The impeachment is hinged on two articles: Abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The debate was long and tensed, on whether trump violated his oath of office by pressurizing Ukrain to damage an opponent.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi, referring to the impeachment of Clinton, said that impeachment of another US president within two decades is imperative because Trump has become “an ongoing threat to our national security and the integrity of our elections.”

“It is an established fact the president violated the Constitution,” Pelosi said. She stood next to a sign that quoted a from the Pledge of Allegiance, “To the Republic, for which it stands…”

“A sad one for America that the president’s reckless activities necessitated us in having to introduce articles of impeachment”, Pelosi said after the impeachment.

Before the impeachment, Trump in a tweet had insisted that he did nothing wrong, and asked for Prayers from his supporters.

Even before the impeachment, Trump had anticipated the outcome. His allies in the Senate are said to be negotiating already on the judicial trial scheduled for early January.

In American Democracy, impeachment does not automatically mean removal from office, but an indictment that will determine the direction of the trial by the Senate. This is different from the understanding of many Nigerians about the process of impeachment.

The American Senate has a majority of Republicans and therefore are expected to block his removal from office come January.

Budget 2020: Buhari Bows To Lawmakers, The Booby Traps

Buhari presents 2020 budget
Buhari presents 2020 budget

By Fola James

President Muhammadu Buhari has no excuse to delay the implementation of policies and programmes of his administration, policy analysts say.

The National Assembly for the first time since the return to democratic government has now made sure that issue of budget delay will no longer constraint the performance of the federal government.

The assembly has passed the budget in record time, for President Buhari to sign, thus restoring the January – December cycle.

President Buhari is happy, same with many Nigerians who have seriously complained of budget delay by the National Assembly.

“It’s my pleasant duty today , on my 77 birthday to sign the 2020Appropriation Bill into law. I’m pleased that the National Assembly has expediously passed this Bill. Our federal budget is now restored to a January-December cycle,” Buhari said while signing the bill into law.

The worries however, is whether  the budget will still be implemented to the fullest, considering that this government has recorded less than 70 per cent implementation since coming to office in 2015.

There are many concerns to this effect.

More so President Buhari has already given an indication that the budget will not be implemented to the letter.

President Buhari, the magazine learnt has demanded from the lawmakers to approve a multi-billion naira virements as one of the conditions to implement the budget to the satisfaction of the National Assembly.

The magazine was informed by some Senators that the Ahmed Lawan-led Senate will not try to rock the boat with the presidency now that the two organs of governments seemed to have fostered peace.

Financial analysts told the magazine the issue of the 2020 budget has been amicably resolved by Presidency and national assembly on the give and take basis.

“For instance, the president has made no issue with a whopping N36 billion request by the National Assembly for the renovation of the Assembly complex,” Bode Agakameh, a policy analyst said.

Apart from this, the lawmakers have also jerked up the budget by over N260 billion from N10.33trn originally contained in the proposal submitted to the Assembly by President Buhari on October 8.

“Going forward, I think what should matter to the lawmakers is the interest of Nigerians. The appropriation bill must be well scrutinized and every naira allocated must be justified by the executive,” the analyst said.

According to the details of the budget obtained by the magazine a large chunks of N2.72 trn has been allocated to servicing both local and foreign debts.

A total of N1.5 billion was allocated for “federal government intervention in Zamfara, Katsina and Borno” while N20 billion was earmarked for “special intervention fund” and another N25 billion for the Nigerian navy’s “Falcon Eye” project aimed at tackling piracy and other criminal activities in waterways.

Also some key highlights of the budget include N46 billion for presidency; N110 billion for National Judicial Council; N111.7 billion for Universal Basic Education; N128 billion for national assembly; N40 billion for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC); N38 billion for North East Development Commission; and N80 billion for Niger Delta Development Commission.

Beside, N75 billion was allocated for the fight against Boko Haram and other operations of the armed forces; N65 billion for amnesty programme; N350 billion (recurrent) earmarked for special intervention programme; N20 billion for contributions to international organisations; and N22.7 billion for immunisation.

Some Nigerians who spoke with the magazine said, they are not happy that a huge part of the 2020 budget will be used in servicing debt, such they say could have been used to turn around the infrastructural deficits in sectors such as health, education and public transportation.
