Allegation from the deceased family has it that Okom was beaten to death by her boss, claiming that nothing could have warranted her committing suicide as claimed by her boss.

According to Okom’s elder brother, Philips Ejeh, he got information that the woman beat his sister to death  hung her body up so as  not to leave traces that she murdered her.

The deceased was said to have started working as a maid for the woman in order to raise money to further her education in January, sadly, her dream was shattered.

However, policemen were said to have noticed some marks on Joy’s body when they got to the scene and after a critical analysis of the crime scene and the corpse, suspected a case of murder.

The corpse was evacuated to the Yaba General Hospital for autopsy, while Fortune was apprehended and the case transferred to the SCIID for further investigation.

Fortune denied the allegation that she killed the victim, adding that Okom had already made up her mind to stop working for her, but could not leave her house because of the lockdown.

She added that she had already made up her mind to let go of Okom since her attitude towards work hadn’t  been encouraging, indicating she had  lost interest in the job.

“An agent, Johnson Odewu, brought Okom to work in my place on January 10, 2020. She worked with my family for a while, but all of a sudden, she became reluctant to work; so, on April 9, I spoke with her and involved her relative, Blessing, who told her to behave.

“But when nothing changed, I decided that she should go and gave her N15,000 as her salary. She left around 7am.

“I was cooking when my husband told me that Joy was still around and when I spoke to her, she said she could not get a vehicle because of the lockdown.

“When Blessing, who was waiting to pick her up in Oshodi did not see her, she called and I explained what transpired and we both concluded that Joy should stay with us till the lockdown was over”, Fortune Stated.

The Police are yet to unravel the mystery behind the death of Okom, as investigation is said to still be ongoing.

Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkanah, confirmed the arrest of Fortune and the death of the maid, but said when the truth is unravelled after the Investigation, the media will be fully briefed.

Arik Air Sends 90% Staff On Leave Without Pay As From May; Pays 20% Salary, April

By Adesina Soyooye

Every members of Staff of Arik Airline will go home with a pay package of 20% only in April. Even then, the situation will be worse in May. That is when 90% of the staff will be sent on leave without pay, until further notice.

In an emotional letter to the staff of the Airline, its Chief Executive Officer, Ray Ilegbodu, put the sad situation on COVID-19 which effectively grounded all Airlines world over.

In Nigeria, all local commercial airlines have been grounded. Only a couple of chartered flights, on essential duties are allowed, especially, in the oil and gas industry.

Since the grounding of  operations, Airlines have managed to pay a sizeable percentage of monthly salaries, about 50%

But in his letter to Arik staff today, Ilegbodu, who regretted the unfortunate situation, explained how much toll the disruption of operations by COVID-19 has taken on the Airline.

He said the situation of salaries and proceeding on leave without pay, would be reviewed as events unfold.

But a number of Staff of the Airline who spoke to this magazine worried about the sudden turn of events. They wondered how they would manage with an 80% Salary cut in April, and then be in leave without pay as from May, till further notice, asking: “Who knows when COVID-19 will end?”

Following, excerpts frim the letter by Arik CEO to members of staff.

“I am confident that you have been keenly following the unfolding global health and economic crises triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic. A few months ago, it would have been impossible to predict such turbulent and challenging circumstances.

“To date, the situation created by the COVID-19 pandemic remains dire with a high level of uncertainty, even within medical circles regarding the containment of the pandemic.

“Although daily updates from a few countries seem to be encouraging,

our situation in Nigeria appears to be getting worse. With the current observed trend of events, it is prudent to lean on the assumption that the situation is likely to persist for a while longer.

“Of huge significance to us is that we have suffered a sharp decline of over 98% in our revenue streams since the suspension of our scheduled flights almost four weeks ago. Added to this is the rapid decline in the value of the Naira by over 35%

against the benchmark and with oil prices now falling well below $15 per barrel, it is evident that we must, without further delay, take decisive action to preserve our organization.

“Our focus as management has always been hinged on the well-being and safety of our staff, managing our liquidity as an organization and creating the opportunity to ride out of inclement circumstances such as the one we are faced with today.

“Pursuant to this, recently, we reached out to our suppliers, specifically negotiating reduced rates on all our contracted services and mitigating operational expenses due to changes in demand. We also implemented contingency plans for staff and introduced operational support flexibility.

“Notwithstanding that some of the measures taken so far have contributed to conserving our limited resources, the outlook for the near future is not encouraging and our current level of business simply cannot support our operations for much longer.

“For this reason, to safeguard the survival of our organization, we are constrained to introduce additional measures to curtail our costs, as dictated by the turn of events.

“After careful deliberation and analyses, management has decided to implement an 80% pay cut for all members of staff across the entire organization for the month of April 2020.

“Furthermore, commencing from May 1st 2020, no less than 90% of our staff will

proceed on leave without pay until further notice. This position will be reviewed on a monthly basis and communications on further developments will be shared by our HR department as the situation evolves.

“While we are not unaware of the challenges that each and every one of us may face during this difficult period, we join you in remaining hopeful that this ugly situation will abate in the shortest possible time and our organization will come out stronger in the long run.

“We are confident that the steps we are taking now are in the best interest of all and will see us through this difficult epoch in the history of mankind.

“Thank you for the dedication you have always displayed in the course of your duties at Arik and your understanding of the situation that we are saddled with today.”

Ghana is the very first country to do so in the sub-region.

But in his twitter handle on Thursday , Adesina stated that President Buhari was appointed as the Champion to coordinate the fight against the COVID 19, at a teleconference held by all the heads of state from the region on Wednesday.

Adesina said “ECOWAS leaders at an extraordinary summit held by video conference have appointed President Muhammadu Buhari as champion that will coordinate the COVID-19 response in the sub-region.

Mambila Power: FG Fails To Pay $100m, Contractor Spits Fire

0

By Fola James

The federal government is trapped in multi-billion dollar litigation with Sunrise Power Transmission Company of Nigeria Ltd (SPTCL) over the Mambila power project except it makes a settlement of $100 million to the company before 1 pm tomorrow, April 24, the company’s lawyer has warned.

According to The Cable, the sum is part of the $200 million settlement agreed by the two parties over breach of contract by the Nigerian government for the construction of the 3,050MW power plant in Mambilla, Taraba state, on a “build, operate and transfer” basis in 2003.

SPTCL had sued Nigeria to the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) court in Paris, France, demanding $2.354 billion as a penalty for contract breach, but the representatives of the federal government later pleaded to settle the matter amicably.

In an agreement reached with Nigerian lawyers, led by the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the federation, Abubakar Malami in 2017, the Buhari administration agreed to a $200 million settlement for awarding the contract to another company Sunrise Sinohydro Corporation Limited, a Chinese firm.

The federal government is expected to make the first tranche of $100 million by tomorrow, April 24 and the remaining half by August 23.

But few weeks ago when Malami met President Buhari on the matter, through a memo dated March 26, the minister was told that the federal government had no funds to pay the settlement at this time.

President Buhari was said to have cited the sliding crude oil prices in the international oil market as his reason.

The company’s lawyers have now written a scathing letter to the federal government, spoiling for war if the terms of the settlement are met.

Jérémie Chouraqui, the legal counsel to Sunrise, in a letter to the federal government on Wednesday, warned that there will be grave consequences if  the terms of the agreement were not met.

The lawyer also reminded the federal government of an addendum in the agreement specifying a penalty in case of any defaults in paying the agreed $200 million as scheduled.

The original agreement stipulated that if Nigeria defaulted, there would be a penalty of 10 percent in addition to the restoration of Sunrise as the local partner in the $5.8 billion hydroelectric project.

Chouraqui, reminded the lawyers that the agreement signed on January 21, 2020 provided for the payment of $200 million on or before February 4, 2020 against the withdrawal of Sunrise’s claims in the arbitration.

He stated following the failure of Nigeria to make the said payment, the two parties entered into an addendum to the transaction which moved the payment schedule to April and August 2020.

No part of the agreement has been fulfilled by the federal government, the company said.

Sunrise Counsel
Chouraqui: Warns FG of Grave Consequences

The letter reads “In line with the provisions of the Transaction, we request your agreement to file a joint letter to the Arbitral Tribunal requesting it to issue a consent award in line with the terms of the Transaction and the Addendum.

Once issued and only when issued, this consent award would supersede the Transaction and the Addendum and end SUNRISE’s current US$2.35 billion claim against FGN and SINOHYDRO.”

The company will go back to court to enforce the agreement, the lawyer warned.

He said “Should your client refuse to issue such joint request for a consent award and/or fail to make the payments it is obliged to make under the Transaction and the Addendum, SUNRISE will resort to all available means to obtain satisfaction, including but not limited to the prompt enforcement of the Transaction and the Addendum against FGN and the pursuit of the Arbitration against Sinohydro and FGN, until full enforcement of FGN’s obligations.

In views of the current deadlines, we would request an answer on or before 1pm (CET) on Friday 24th of April 2020. In the absence of response, we will consider that your client refuses to make a joint request for a consent-award and will draw all consequences and SUNRISE will pursue any or all of its other options. SUNRISE fully reserves all of its rights.”

COVID-19: Gov. Ganduje Sends 1500 Almajiris Packing

0
Ganduje and Alimajiri

By Akinwale Kasali

Keeping to his words to send packing non-indigenous Almajiris to their various home states, Governor Abdullahi Umaru Ganduje of Kano State has evacuated 1500 of them out of Kano. His action was necessitated by the outbreak of the Pandemic Covid-19 which has spread to the state.

Over 554 of them were evacuated to neighbouring Jigawa, their state of origin.

Kano State Commissioner for Education, Muhammad Sanusi-Kiru, who is also the Chairman of the evacuation committee, in an interview with newsmen said the Governor has asked for the immediate  evacuation of non Kano State Indigene Almajiris to their respective States.

Sanusi-Kiru added that the evacuation of the children was to ensure total compliance with the social distancing order of the state government to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

“The initiative was in good faith, aimed at combating coronavirus and to fast-track integration of Almajiri children into formal school system.

“We evacuated 419 Almajiri children to Katsina State on Tuesday, and we are making arrangement to evacuate 195 to Kaduna State by Thursday.

“As i am talking to you now, we are heading to Jigawa in convoy with adequate security, together with the children to hand them over to the state government.

“Before the evacuation, we provided health personnel that checked the health of those children to ensure that they are all in healthy condition before we hand them over to their respective states of origin.

“Where these children were living before the evacuation was worrisome, because there were no adequate conveniences, shelter and other hygienic facilities.

“At some of the tsangaya schools, you will find out that over 3,000 almajiri children live in a small apartment without proper care, hygiene and other necessary needs, ” he said.

According to Sanusi-Kiru, no serious government can tolerate such arrangement.

“That was why Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje directed the ministry to come up with a new reform in form of evacuating  them to their states of origin, ” he said.

He added that the reform on formal and non-formal education would ensure that the Tsangaya schools would be less in number and more effective.

“Some of the heads of those Tsangaya schools, voluntarily handed over the children to the committee for evacuation,” he said.

Breaking: China To Donate Additional $30 Million To World Bank

0

By Uche Mbah
Filling in the vacuum created by the suspension of funding of the World Health Organisation, the Chinese government has announced that they will fund the World Bank with an additional $30 million, having earlier donated $20 million last March. President Trump had announced that America is no more going to honor their obligations to the World Health Organization, WHO, citing their dubious role in handling the Covi-19 epidermic. WHO hesitated before announcing that they have categorized the disease as Epidermic, and, worse still, dithered over labeling the disease a pandemic. He accused WHO of being biased in favor of China, and of aiding China in the coverup of the exact seriousness of the disease.
“I am directing my administration to halt funding while a review is conducted to assess the World Health Organization’s role in severely mismanaging and covering up the spread of the coronavirus,” Trump was reported to have said.
America has been the largest single funder of the World body. Last year, they gave the Organisation $400 million. this is about 15% of the total funding for the organization which is seeking $1 billion to tackle COVID-19. This funding will now be reviewed, and after 90 days, a final decision will be reached.
The Global body hopes that Trump will rescind his decision.
The WHO had launched an appeal to the global community in March for $675m for the war against Coronavirus pandemic and is said to be planning a fresh appeal for at least $1bn.

COVID-19: University of Ibadan Scientists Say Asthma Plant Is Herbal Solution

0

By Chidinma Ewunonu-Aluko

Some scientists at the University of Ibadan have recommended a plant called ‘Euphorbia Hirta’ as a herbal alternative to mitigating some of the diseases associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the Scientists, some of the diseases, which the plant can cure, include dry cough, respiratory failures and fever, among others.

The scientists, including Profs. Ademola Ladele and Rasheed Awodoyin, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Ibadan on Tuesday that the *Euphorbia hirta* was commonly called Asthma plant.

Awodoyin, a Weed Ecologist, said that the plant was known as *Asin Uloko* in Edo, *Nonon Kurciya* in Hausa, *Chamma Chamma in Kanuri, Endamyel* in Fula-Fulfulde (Borno), *Ba Ala* in Owerri and *Akun Esan* in Yoruba.

He listed the Scientists who worked on the plant to include Prof. Olaniyi Babayemi (Animal Scientist), Prof. Olapeju Aiyelaagbe (Chemist), Dr Ahmed Abu (Animal Scientist), Dr Adeoluwa (Organic Agriculturist), Dr Olajumoke Fayinminnu (Toxicologist) and Dr Funmilayo Adebiyi (Animal Scientist).

Others, the don said, were Dr Idayat Gbadamosi (Ethnobotanist) and Dr J. Badejo (Drug Development Specialist) and Prof. Ademola Ladele (Agricultural Extensionist).

He said that the plant was a herbal alternative to curing dry cough, respiratory failures, fever and some other related symptoms of chronic flu, all of which were associated with COVID-19.

Awodoyin told NAN that the plant, after being boiled, could be taken as tea and could serve as first aid treatment for dry cough, while further complex solutions to the pandemic could still be explored.

He said that the scientists were sparked up by shared information that mucus plug of the airways and nasal chamber, among others were the causes of seizure and death from COVID-19.

“Asthma plant tea softens dry cough, releases the mucus as phlegm. It is a safe herb tea, though not recommended for pregnant women and should be taken for six consecutive days.

“Just get a handful of the plant, steep in boiling water for 15 minutes, drink freely, as the taste is pleasant. I use it at my family level. I don’t even use it for more than three days before getting immediate result,” Awodoyin said.

He emphasised that such medicinal plants had curative actions due to the presence of complex chemical constituents.

According to him, the plant contains triterpenes, phytosterols, tannins, polyphenols, flavonoids, essential oil, alkaloids, saponins, amino acids and minerals, with quercitrin, a flavanoid glycoside, isolated from the herb, showing anti-diarrhea activity.

Also speaking, the leader of the scientists, Prof. Ademola Ladele, said asthma plant could also be used in the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders (diarrhea, dysentery, intestinal parasitosis,) as well as bronchial and respiratory diseases (asthma, bronchitis, hay fever, flu).

“The aqueous extract from the plant exhibits anxiolytic, analgesic, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory activities; the root decoction of the plant are also beneficial for nursing mothers deficient in milk (galactogogue).

“The aqueous extract shows antioxidant effect and a free radical scavenging activity. It is used to lower blood pressure, treat athletes foot, dengue fever and for production of blood platelets.

“It can also be used to relieve anxiety and stress. In SouthIndia, it is used as ear drops in the treatment of boils, sore and wounds; a decoction of the leaves induces milk flow and the leaf chewed with palm kernel for restoration of virility.

“It is also effective in treating ulcers, while the plant is also eaten as a vegetable; it is a powerful herb which should be used in moderation.

“In Benin City, the plant is pounded, mixed with palm oil and licked to treat any type of cough,” he said.

Ladele added that although the plant was reported to have anti-fertility activity, report from Guinea revealed that the plant extract had practically no toxicity towards man and guinea pigs.

According to him, using the plant may help COVID-19 patients to breathe with ease and remove the need for a ventilator for mild cases.

“There is no evidence yet that asthma plant can cureCoronavirus, but it can be useful in mitigating some of the symptoms like fever, coughing and respiratory challenges.

“A research group at the University of Ibadan is exploring the benefits of other similar plants for the adequate cure of chronic flu and other respiratory diseases, including COVID-19,” he said.

Governors To Nigerians: Your Suffering Continues; Ask PMB To Shut Down Nigeria For Two Weeks

0

By Adesina Soyooye

In a unanimous decision, the 36 Governors of the Federation, on Wednesday, resolved to ask President Muhammadu Buhari to completely lockdown the country for two weeks.

The resolve is bound to depress most Nigerians who already are tired of the lockdown, with hunger, looming, and already ravaging many. The palliatives being given out by the Federal Government and states to the underprivileged have had little or no effect at all.

The Governors made the decision after a tele-conference they held to assess the state of the spread of Coronavirus in the country.

They were worried at the alarming rate with which the Virus is spreading across the country, and the number of people so far infected within a short period since the index case. They have agreed to a two-week lockdown of the country, state to state, with all the borders closed.

The Governors held the meeting under the aegis of the Nigeria Governors Forum, NGF.

They took the decision after they had briefings from the Governors of Lagos, Bauchi, Oyo and Ogun states who shared their experiences in managing COVID-19. They believe that a complete lockdown of the country would stem the spread of the disease in the country.

A communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, and signed by the NGF Chairman, Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, said only people on essential services would be allowed to move around. They expressed worries at the rate with which health personnel are being infected by COVID-19. They also resolved to cooperate with the National Centre for Disease Control, NCDC to see to the end of the disease.

President Buhari had locked down  the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Lagos and Ogun states, initially for two weeks, and extended it by another two weeks.

Almost all the Governors had either locked down their states, or partially done so.

They, also, closed interstate borders.

Yet, the spread of the deadly Virus has not abated. It, instead, gets worse by the day.

The Virus has spread to, at least, 25 States of the Federation, with Lagos remaining the epicentre. But other states, including Osun, Oyo, Bauchi and, of course, the FCT are in hot pursuit. There are fears over Kano which has recorded dozens of yet to be explained deaths.

It is not yet known what Buhari’s reaction will be, but strong  feelings are that he is likely to endorse the recommendations by the NGF. It is not known how many Nigerians, already expectant that the lockdown would be lifted, and borders opened, would receive the news of this new twist.

The lockdown has already caused a spike in the rate of crimes in states, especially, Lagos.

872 Nigerians, and counting, have already tested positive for the disease. 28 deaths have been recorded.
