Covid-19: Gov. El-Rufai Extends Lockdown By 30 Days In Kaduna

0

By Akinwale Kasali

The Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has extended the lockdown in the State by 30 days.

The Governor who just recovered from the deadly Pandemic last week, said wiyh the spread of the outbreak, there is urgent need for residents of the State to take precautions.

In a statement by the Governor through his Special Adviser on Media and Communication, Muyiwa Adekeye, he said the decision of Governor El-Rufai to extend the quarantine orders being enforced in the state for another 30 days follows a recommendation to that effect by the State Standing Committee on Covid-19, which is chaired by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Hadiza Balarabe. This is effective from today, 26th April 2020.

With Covid-19 cases rising rapidly in neighbouring states and the FCT, and with strong evidence of interstate travel being a major means of spreading the virus, the Standing Committee’s evaluation is that measures to protect Kaduna State residents require further strengthening and more vigorous enforcement.

He stressed that Governor El-Rufai has endorsed this evaluation and has accordingly reviewed the Quarantine Orders to strengthen the provisions against unauthorised movements. The two-day window during which the restriction of movement is relaxed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays has been reduced to only one day.

Henceforth, only Wednesdays will be lockdown-free, until the trajectory of Covid-19 infections becomes clearer.

All persons that venture out of their homes for whatever reason must wear facemasks and observe social distancing everywhere they go, in markets and in authorised vehicles. Government is making efforts to provide facemasks for poor and vulnerable residents, and it appeals to everyone that can afford it to get their tailors to make them cloth facemasks which they can wash after every use. The government also encourages tailors to produce facemasks for sale to those that are neither poor nor vulnerable.

Wearing of facemasks will be robustly enforced as a critical public health measure to reduce person-person transmission.

The state government said that the measures announced on 26th March 2020, to contain Covid-19 remain in force and have been renewed. These were imposed in exercise of the powers vested in the Governor by Section 45 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, (as amended), Sections 2 and 8 of the Quarantine Act 1926, now known as CAP Q2, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004 and the Public Health Law of 1917.

Therefore, further to these declarations, and in accordance with the law, the quarantine orders imposed at midnight on Thursday, 26th March 2020, are further extended for another 30 days, with the following conditions, amongst others:

  1. All residents of Kaduna State are quarantined and must stay at home.
  2. No office, event centre, market, shop or business of any sort or place of worship is allowed to open;

iii. The only category of persons exempted are workers in essential services such as health workers, the fire service, water corporation, electricity distribution and security personnel. Tankers conveying fuel to petrol stations are also permitted to move;

  1. Businesses in the food and pharmaceutical value-chain are exempted; and shall enjoy the protections accorded to other essential services;
  2. Schools, places of worship, event centres, sports grounds, bars, restaurants, public parks and all other places where large crowds could gather are to remain closed until further notice.
  3. Residents are advised to stay at home, observe social distancing, avoid large gatherings, wear facemasks and wash their hands regularly with soap and water.

The Quarantine Orders prescribe fines, imprisonment and forfeiture for violations of the provisions specified therein.

The Kaduna State Government has clearly stated that no visitor is welcome to enter the state while the Covid-19 pandemic is raging. Entry into or passage through Kaduna State is prohibited whilst the Quarantine Orders remain in force. Persons seeking to come into the state will be denied entry. Such persons will be given the option of returning to their take-off points or entering isolation for 14 days in locations and conditions that are so austere that nobody can mistake them for holiday resorts.

The vehicles being used to enable such attempts to breach the quarantine conditions will be confiscated and forfeited to the government. The companies operating those vehicles will also be prosecuted and shall lose their license to operate in the state, even after the Covid-19 pandemic is contained. Within the state, vehicles of whatever type that are determined to be in violation will be confiscated and forfeited to the government, while the persons driving them will be fined, and may be imprisoned upon conviction. Motorcycle taxis and tricycles (popular known as Keke Napep) are prohibited in the state. Persons driving or riding in them shall be prosecuted while the vehicles shall be forfeited upon conviction.

Mobile courts have been empowered by the Quarantine Orders to try violators and impose the prescribed penalties, including fines, imprisonment and forfeiture of vehicles, upon conviction.

Conscious of the need to keep vital industries and businesses in the farming, food and pharmaceutical value chains operational, trailers and trucks conveying food, seeds, fertilizer and medical products are exempted from the restriction of movement. Such vehicles must, however, not carry more than three persons, including the driver. Otherwise they will be deemed to be engaging in illegal transport of persons which is a breach of quarantine orders.

Anyone thinking of disguising as a food vendor by parading a few bags of rice or other food in their cars must cut the pretence as they will be prosecuted at the mobile court and the vehicle forfeited to the government upon conviction.

The Kaduna State Government has also directed the Ministry for Local Government to ensure that local government chairmen are fully involved in enforcing the quarantine orders in their council areas. The Ministry of Local Government has also reminded traditional and community leaders of their obligation to report violations of quarantine conditions in their localities. Places of worship that violate the quarantine orders in any form will lose their titles to the land and the buildings will be demolished.

Regarding burials, guidelines from the Ministry of Health will outline the maximum number of persons that can attend any burial, while observing safety and social distancing rules. Gatherings for condolence are prohibited until the Covid-19 pandemic is declared over. The burial of any fatality from Covid-19 will be in accordance with the strict protocol to be announced by the Commissioner of Health.

The extension of the quarantine conditions imposes an obligation to make provision for the low income, poor and vulnerable persons that would be adversely affected, as they may be unable to earn any income while the lockdown persists. The state government has done a first phase of distribution of food across 59 community clusters in nine local government areas. The next phase will be conducted across the 23 local government areas.

To fund the provision of these support packages, the Kaduna State Government expects all those fortunate enough to still earn a regular income to live up to their neighbourly responsibility towards those who are unable to earn any money due to no fault of theirs. Therefore, the less than 100, 000 persons who work for the Kaduna State Government as political appointees and public servants must contribute financially towards enabling the almost 10m persons living in the state to survive and thrive in this emergency period.

Therefore, the Kaduna State Government has directed all its senior appointees, including Commissioners, Permanent Secretaries, Special Advisers and Heads of Agencies to each donate N500,000 in April 2020. In subsequent months, they will donate 50% of their salaries until the quarantine ends. Other categories of political appointees will also be making monthly donations to support the provision of relief to the low income, poor and vulnerable residents of the state.

Career public servants earning a net pay of N67,000 and above after tax will also donate 25% of their pay monthly whilst the quarantine conditions are in place. No public servant will have less N50,000 monthly to manage in this emergency period.

We are obliged to demonstrate that as government workers, we care enough for others to donate part of our earnings for their wellbeing. As a state government, we are also seeking donations from high net worth individuals, the private sector and development partners to support our efforts to contain Covid-19 and its consequences.

The Kaduna State Government wishes to inform potential donors that we prefer donations to be in kind: personal protective equipment, PCR machines, medical facilities and equipment, facemasks, food, pharmaceuticals, and fertilizer, seeds and seedlings and other support for farmers. The state government will publicly acknowledge all donations in addition to the letters of appreciation that shall be sent to all donors.

First Bank: Regional Manager’s Death In Kano Raises Posers

By Fola James

First Bank Plc management is in deep worry over its employees in Kano after Abdullahi Lawal, the bank’s regional manager in the commercial city fell to the corona virus pandemic.

The Nigerian Centre for Disease Control, NCDC will also need to investigate whether the bank has actually put in place serious measures to protect both customers and staff from contracting the novel virus while conducting businesses in and around the bank’s premises across the state.

This has become so in view of the death of more than 20 prominent persons in the state, including its senior staff.

The management on Saturday confirmed the death of Lawal, who it said worked in one at its Kano Main branch

Folake Ani-Mumuney, group head, marketing and corporate communications, in a statement on Saturday, said the bank shared with the family the grief of untimely demise of its employee.

The statement reads “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time as we do all that is necessary to support them. We ask that all necessary courtesies be extended to the family so they can grieve privately.”

Following the tragedy, the bank said it has now shut the branch where the deceased worked.

The bank said it has activated its COVID-19 precaution response plan as part of measures to help contain the virus.

It advised employees and customers who had been in contact with the deceased to self-isolate according to guidelines provided by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

First Bank said it has taken the pandemic seriously because “As a responsible corporate organisation, FirstBank has been at the forefront of the concerted efforts against the coronavirus pandemic alongside others,” the statement said.

Accordingly “We have robust protocols in place including practising social distancing, frequently disinfecting our buildings and locations even whilst ensuring services are available through our alternative channels such as our ATMs and other digital platforms.

We have immediately, therefore, shut down access to the premises as we disinfect the entire location and ask all staff and customers who may have been in contact with our late colleague to follow the NCDC guidelines and self-isolate.

We will, as a matter of course, extend all possible support to staff and customers at this difficult time.”

Meanwhile, checks by the magazine indicate that social distancing, one of the measures prescribed by NCDC to contain the spread of the novel disease, has yet to be enforced in most banks in Lagos, for instance, where customers are still allowed to crowd around Automated Teller Machine, ATM despite the restriction on movement by the federal government.

Banks are allowed to render skeletal services within the period of the lock down.

EDO: Oshiomhole, Obaseki, Akerele: Battle of Warhorses

By Bayo Bernard

Taiwo Akerele, erstwhile chief of staff to Governor of Edo state, Godwin Obaseki Taiwo has been in politics long enough to understand that in politics you don’t wait for your opponent to strike first.

That’s exactly what the former CoS did on Saturday, April 25 when he ‘fired’ his boss, Governor Godwin Obaseki, after resigning his position as one of the power brokers in government.

As chief of staff, he was the engine room of the four year government of Governor Obaseki.

Top Aides Abandon Obaseki

Akerele has left the government barely two months after Solomon Okodua, Senior Special Assistant on Anti-Human Trafficking Issues to the governor turned his back on Obaseki who faces re-election before the end of this year.

The decision by other aides to leave or remain with the embattled helmsman, keen watchers of the state said, will determine whether he will be re-elected for a second term in office as the battle between him and his former political ally now APC chairman rages on.

The erstwhile CoS letter to Governor Obaseki reads “My decision to exit the government is based on administrative and governance grounds.

I am solidly with His excellency Mr Godwin Obaseki in his quest to transform Edo state. His mission and vision resonate with mine.’

Allies: When the Going was Good

He said he could no longer work the governor because they no longer share the same vision on how the state should be governed.

“This is all I have to say, I will like to be given the opportunity to go private as I part ways administratively with the government based on principles.

I thank his excellency for the opportunity given to me to serve in this capacity and also thanks to His Royal Majesty, Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II for his immense leadership and support during the period I served in this capacity. May his reign be long and peaceful. Amen”, Akerele said in the letter.

I’m Not Worried- Governor Obaseki

The initial response of the state government to the resignation was dismissive, suggesting that Governor Obaseki was already done with his service.

According to a statement issued on Saturday by the  Special Adviser to the governor on Media and Communication Strategy, Crusoe Osagie, the administration said it was not rattled by the development.

Osagie said “In the past few hours, it emerged on social media that the Chief of Staff, Mr. Taiwo Akerele, has resigned his appointment with the Edo State Government.

While the governor has not received any formal communication to this effect, he believes that this is a personal decision of Mr. Akerele.

However, whenever the resignation letter gets to the governor, he would accept it, and he wishes Akerele all the best in his future endeavours.”

Akerele’s Resignation Sends Shock Waves In Govt

Further feelers from the government somehow put a lie to this.

The former CoS, it was learnt had initially written a letter to the governor, which he handed personally to him, but was torn by Obaseki who rejected his resignation.

The second letter, the magazine was told Akerele leaked, to the press to fast-track his exit as one of the powerful aides in the state government.

Even though the state’s helmsman has replaced him with Osaze Uzamere, a son of a former senator, it’s very obvious that Akerele has indeed left a big shoe for his successor.

Not only that. There are suggestions by keen observers of the state’s politics that the governor has remained shocked by Akerele’s sudden exit from his government, especially “during his political travails with his predecessor who’s bent on frustrating his second term ambition,” a close associate to the governor told the magazine on Saturday.

The feelings in Obaseki’s kitchen cabinet, the magazine has learnt, is that Akerele has now fully thrown himself into the centre of the state’s political battle, on Oshiomhole’s side.

That Akere left his position at a defining moment in the state’s politics did not surprise many, particularly those that understand his close relationship with the APC chairman.

Former CoS Close To APC Boss

Picked from the civil society by ex-Governor Oshiomhole, the former chief of staff served in that government as Special Assistant to the governor.

In that position, insiders in the state said, Akerele was the ‘chief strategist’ in Oshiomhole’s administration, a position he held for many years, before he was later made chief of staff by Governor Obaseki, who was also a member of Oshiomhole’s inner caucus at the time.

Obaseki was chief Economic Adviser in that administration.

The relationship crumbled for the three political war horses after Governor Obaseki and the APC chairman went their separate ways over who controls the soul of politics of the Heartbeat of the Nation, as Edo is popularly called.

Obaseki Plotted His Removal

But Akerele’s resignation did not come easy as some reports have wrongly claimed.

His ouster has been long planned by the governor, sources told the magazine, who was waiting for the right time to strike.

He got wind of this and decided to leave the government when the ovation is still loud, it was learnt.

“Governor Obaseki lost interest in the chief of staff as soon as his war with Oshiomhole started. The governor has always seen him as a mole, planted in his government by his predecessor.

But Akere had managed to have a working relationship with the governor despite his affiliation to the APC National Chairman.

At a point, the governor’s suspicion has grown, particularly after being edged on by some of his closest aides that ‘the chief of staff cannot be trusted’, and that he needed to be changed,” one lawmaker in the Edo state house of assembly told the magazine.

Indeed, Akerele has informed close associates, that he has been sidelined by the governor “and undermined by some senior officials in government who considered him an outsider that could still be in cahoot with the APC chairman despite his avowed loyalty to Governor Obaseki,” the lawmaker said.

Some close aides of the governor, the magazine was told, had also accused him of running a parallel government, to drive their point home with the embattled governor.

He has also been accused of not publicly joining the governor in his political battle against his predecessor.

An indigene of Igarra in Akoko-Edo Local Government, a border town between Ondo and Edo state, his relationship with Oshiomhole dated back to the time when the APC chairman was the President of the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC and a strong member of the civil society which Akerele also belonged.

The relationship later earned him a position as a special assistant in Oshiomhole’s government, where he worked alongside Obaseki and other as strategists and engine room of the administration.

“Many electoral successes recorded by the Oshiomhole’s administration were linked Akerele, Obaseki and other who were regarded as technocrats. In fact, Oshiomhole, Obaseki and Akerele could be regarded as a troika responsible for the success of that administration,” a member of NDDC Board from the state told the magazine.

Meanwhile, the magazine leant that despite the problem at home, the governor still has a strong support to hang in on: the support he enjoys among APC governors.

This will really count for him when the political campaign for his second term begins after the nation has successfully ended the corona virus pandemic, analysts say.

Kano’s Mysterious Deaths: Falana Demands Full Investigation

Femi Falana

By Akinwale Kasali

Constitutional and Human Rights Lawyer, Femi Falana,SAN, has demanded that a full scale investigation be carried out on the mysterious death in Kano State.

Within the past few days, over 600 deaths have been recorded in the state.

Falana said the Federal Government owes Nigerians an explanation on what led to the death of Kano residents and also asked the FG to publish the full report of the investigation.

Falana, the interim Chairman, Alliance on Surviving Covid-19 Action Programme and Beyond, made the request in a letter addressed to the Minister of Health, Osagie Ehnaire on Sunday.

The letter read: “During a press briefing held at Abuja a week ago, you did announce that the Federal Ministry of Health, the Kano State Chief Epidemiologist, Officials of the Kano Public Health Department and those of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) had commenced investigation into the strange deaths and mass burials currently going on in Kano State,” it read.

“However, we are disturbed to note that the burials have since continued without any official information on the cause of the strange deaths.

“The people of Kano State and Nigerians in general are worried over the worsening health crisis as it may spread to other parts of Kano State not yet affected as well as other parts of the country if not urgently addressed. But since the Kano State Government is completely overwhelmed we hereby call on the Federal Government to take over the management of the crisis without any further delay.

“In addition, we are compelled to request for a certified true copy of the report of the joint investigation conducted by the Federal and Kano State Ministries of Health into the strange deaths and mass burials taking place in Kano State.

“The report should include the nature and cause of the deaths, the number of casualties and patients currently undergoing treatment in hospitals as well as an outline of the measures being put in place by the Federal Government to stop the strange deaths involving mass burials.

“Take notice that if you fail to accede to our request we shall not hesitate to invoke the relevant provisions of the law to compel official disclosure of the findings of the joint team constituted to investigate the cause of the strange deaths and mass burials in Kano State.”

Falana said the request was made pursuant to provisions of the Freedom of Information Act, and Ehanire is required to publish the report “within seven days of the receiving the letter”.

Imo, Uzodinma And His Attack Dogs

0
Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State

By Chibuike Onyeukwu

Nothing better captures the tragedy that has befallen the good people of Imo state than that at a time when functionaries of other state governments are doing their best to provide their people with the necessary information on the activities of government, especially efforts to beat the deadly Corona-19 pandemic, the current administration in Imo State preoccupies itself with unsubstantiable allegations against citizens. Its Information Commissioner, Hon. Declan Emelumba and his colleagues have been celebrating a non-existent N19.63 billion, purportedly misappropriated by the immediate past administration headed by His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha CON.

The story is not new but since Hon. Emelumba made his press release to select media houses in which he made the allegation, he has been shuttling from one radio station and newspaper house to another in a bid to win more converts in his (his principal’s) campaign of calumny against Governor Ihedioha. Not surprisingly, not a few people have been wondering whether the Hon. Commissioner thinks Imolites, a highly knowledgeable and sophisticated people, are deaf and/or gullible. In one of his outings, the operatives of the radio station where he took his blackmail to, in order to achieve some balancing, sought me for His Excellency’s side of the story. Initially, I was quite reluctant since my involvement, or indeed that of any other insider of the Ihedioha administration, would have merely lent currency to that orchestration. However, I eventually accepted to participate at least for the sake of listeners who stood the danger of being further hoodwinked by Emelumba’s shenanigan.

But I had only one question for the Hon. commissioner who was in the studio – the moderator phoned me: Mr. Commissioner, can you explain to Imolites why, for an audit that covered twelve months, a period more than half of which was during the administration of Governor Ihedioha’s predecessor, Rochas Okorocha, you went to town to announce that you have discovered a fraud precisely perpetrated under Ihedioha? Of course, he drew blank and for the rest of the programme, he flustered until his time – he probably bought the airtime – was up.

Since that programme, that question has re-echoed across the state. Why would the Hope Uzodimma administration lump an audit query that covers two administrations and single out one for criminalization, other than out of a deliberate plot to impugn the integrity of Rt. Hon.  Ihedioha, which has for decades, been a source of concern to Senator Uzodinma and his cohorts. Going by the profile of the Uzodimma administration so far, it needs no exaggeration to say that it will neither have an answer to this question, nor succeed in damaging the character of His Excellency which has, over the years, stuck. Apparently dazed, Hon. Emelumba, the arrowhead of the campaign, came up with even a more laughable matter. In a bid to curry the sentiments of the people against Ihedioha, he sent to media houses interior photographs of a vehicle procured during the period for official VVIP use. The public received his efforts to blackmail His Excellency with a pinch of salt. They paid no attention to it at all. Infact, it died on arrival. But suffice to note that the choice of that vehicle saved the state huge cost of purchasing several bullet-proof vehicles that would have cost over N400m.

This is not the medium to respond to that misrepresented claim but it is important, in the time being, to draw the attention of the Imo public to the language the Hon. Commissioner employs in propagating his false allegations. He talks with so much exaggeration and emotions that even the least discerning person would see that the campaign, aside being poorly scripted, is premeditated. For example, he refers to the Ihedioha seven-month administration as the “most corrupt” the state has ever had. I ask, “is this not an assault on the collective intelligence of the people? How did an administration that is barely three months old discover that of all the five civilian administrations – from Dr. Sam Mbakwe of blessed memory to Ihedioha – the state has had, Ihedioha, is the “most corrupt”? How did an administration that appears so mesmerized by the intricacies of documentations, as a result of which it is unable to pay contractors, salaries and pensions for three months, make such a reckless claim?

How did the administration come to its conclusion when a Commissioner for Finance was only appointed about three weeks ago? Meanwhile, the State Executive Council, constituted barely a month ago and of which Hon. Emelumba is a member, from records in the public has met only once. Meanwhile, none of the over 200 Special Advisers and Senior Special Assistants, inaugurated almost two months ago, has been assigned any portfolio. So, how did an administration that has found it difficult to settle down after 100 days able to determine which of its predecessors was the “most corrupt”? The target of this reckless statement is the report of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), which rated Imo State, THE LEAST CORRUPT among the comity of states in Nigeria after an independent survey of fiscal management in the 36 states. Question is, Who is Emelumba to shamelessly attempt an aspersion on the celebrated NBS report? Could it be that he still maintains his job as a campaign spokesperson?

Meanwhile, the government’s information machinery for handling the COVID-19 crisis has been lackluster. After a hurriedly put together “commissioning” of an “isolation centre” in the middle of a densely populated neighborhood along the ever busy Amakohia – Orlu road, Owerri, an event at which the social distancing rule was thrown overboard – there has been no information about the other isolation centres. Even though the Senator Uzodinma reeled out at least five other centres outside Owerri, nothing more has been heard about them. Meanwhile, the so-called government palliative is shrouded in mystery and secrecy. What and what is the government providing? What are the criteria for distributing them? What is the channel for distribution? What are the updates on the situation at hand? These are vital information a Commissioner for Information – official spokesperson of government, should concern himself with at a time like this.

I am certain that Emelumba is in the know that Imolites have not accepted Senator Uzodinma as their governor. And I am afraid they may never embrace his administration for the simple reasons that he does not have their consent through a popular mandate. Secondly, this lack of contract is worsened by his antecedents. Thirdly, they miss the man – Ihedioha – whom they freely gave their mandate to preside their affairs. The early signs of tendency for fraud, ineptitude, mistrust have further heightened the fears that the current administration would be worse than Senator Okorocha’s administration.

Just recently, reports have it that because of the secrecy in which the palliative matter is shrouded, most of the items are not getting to the targeted recipients. Imolites, especially those at the rural areas are lamenting that the quantity of materials they received are far below what was donated by the federal government and distributed by the state government. Of course, it does not require a diviner to know where the shortfalls are coming from. If an administration cannot effectively monitor the distribution of few hundreds of bags of rice, a few hundreds of packets of noodles and a few hundreds of thin yam tubers to a hapless populace at a time like this, with what magic did it discover which administration, since as late as the second republic, is the most corrupt.

It is evident that the Senator Uzodinma administration is using the purported audit report to divert the attention of citizens from its colossal failure within its 100 days in office, lack of payment of salaries and pensions as well as abysmal handling of the COVID-19 challenges. As I write this essay, there is no known location for testing centre in the whole of Imo State. There is no action plan on ground, save for Covid 19 face-caps and a few materials donated by well-meaning citizens. I know of a native parlance – Ala adighi nma wu Uru ndi Nze (It Is during crisis that Princes make profit).

Nigerians have also noted with dismay, the recent unwarranted attack on the entire workforce of the local government, under the umbrella of Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, (NULGE) for demanding for the payment of their two months salaries. The body through its National President, Ibraheem Khaleel, in the report in Punch Newspaper, entitled, “Imo diverting LG funds despite NFIU guidelines – NULGE”, accused the Hope Uzodinma Administration of diverting LG funds. According to the National President, “The government of Imo State is tampering with the local government funds and has refused to pay the salaries of local government workers despite the lockdown. The government is deliberately diverting the local government funds, and has refused to comply with the NFIU guidelines on the allocation and release of local government funds. Since the government came on board, it has not disclosed the amount it got from the Federation Account and it has not implemented the NFIU guidelines, the money meant for local government has not been released and the governor is not paying the local government workers.” But this was never the case when Ihedioha governed the state.

Methinks this is coming rather too soon (within 3 months) for an administration that promised to consolidate on the solid foundation, deliberately and painstakingly laid by his predecessor, including the landmark policy of full autonomy for local government administration as introduced and implemented by the Rebuild Imo administration of His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha CON for the period it was on the saddle. These are the issues the Commissioner and his colleagues should bother with rather than laboring to out-do each other in their desperation to dent the enviable profile and achievements of Ihedioha, man of the people.

After 100 days in office, the confusion among the aides of Senator Uzodinma, most of who are known corporate hangers-on, has assumed a more embarrassing dimension. It is noteworthy that this administration has broken the record since the creation of Imo State in 1976, to become the first to announce the appointment of over 200 aides without portfolios. And after 100 days in office, they are yet to be officially told why they should be paid with tax payers money, yet they are receiving salaries and allowances for doing nothing. There is no better evidence of failure than currently witnessed. One of them, in a chat with a friend, alluded to the fact that they are just loafing around the government house without offices and assignment, hence, they have kept themselves busy by keeping vigil in social media platforms and attacking anybody that enquires the government’s direction.

Hon. Emelumba, from all indication is a prince in the Uzodimma administration who cannot miss the opportunity offered by the attention his smear campaign is receiving. It was recently alleged that the Commissioner and his team have received huge amount of money running into hundreds of millions to “finish” Ihedioha. Hence, the more he rabble rouses and indulges in more drama, the more he warms himself to the heart of his principal, who is in desperate search for acceptance by Imo people and would do anything for it.

It is a fact that until recently, most of those in the frontline of attacks against Rt. Hon. Ihedioha have either drank from his benevolence and large heart or still place premium to his person, contrary to their current posturing. I pity their helplessness in this circumstance, given that they must prove their loyalty to the man at the helm.  Take for instance, Hon. Emelumba’s rejoinder for Ihedioha in 2018 to a piece written by Evang. Ethelbert Okere, entitled Imolites Rise For APC”. The article came after the coalition, of which Uzodimma belonged, “collected” the APC structure in the state from ex Governor Okorocha. Hon. Emelumba was among core members of the PDP that shot down Okere’s article. The others are Ray Emeana, Amanze Obi, yours truly and others. The thrust of all the rejoinders was to rubbish Okere’s claim that majority of Imolites were rooting for the APC.

From the look of things, Hon. Emelumba is not in a hurry wean himself of the toga of a hatchet man and an attack dog which is the real tragedy for both the administration and the state as a whole. This is so because attack dogs of administrations don’t serve in the State Executive Council which is the highest decision making organ of government.  The needful, has to be done. Maybe he hasn’t realized that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP is ever poised to democratically situate its role of a virile and credible opposition, irrespective of the administration’s recent attempt to gag free press, free speech and constructive criticism.

All the above put together means that the people of Imo may have to brace up for more of the Commissioner’s combative tactics of arm-twisting his boss and assault on Ihedioha and members of the public who could task the government on its promises. But they can be assured that concerning the allegations being peddled around by him, Rt. Hon. Ihedioha, with whom Imo people bonded right from his first day in office, would do nothing to betray their trust.

Explaining how they were arrested, Mba said: “Discreet investigations so far reveal that the arrested suspects are part of a 19-man gang that also carried out the kidnap of Dr Phillip Ataga’s wife and two daughters on January 24, 2020 at Juji Community in Chikun LGA of Kaduna State.

“Mrs Ataga was killed by the gang following her heroic resistance to the despicable and inhuman attempt by the leader of the gang to rape her. The suspects after killing her released the daughters and corpse of the slain woman to the family after collecting ransom.

“Further investigations reveal that the same criminal gang is responsible for the kidnap of six students and two teachers of Engravers College, Chikun LGA, Kaduna, from their school premises on October 3, 2019.

“The suspects, known to belong to a hybrid terrorist criminal network causing untold havoc in North-Central, Nigeria, have confessed to several other random operations along Abuja-Kaduna Expressway where they kidnapped, killed and robbed motorists, collecting ransom and valuables running into millions of naira.”

The remaining gang members, the IGP assures, will be be haunted down.

Mother of Brazilian National Team Football Captain and World’s Most Expensive Player,  Neymar Junior, is making headline news  again, weeks after trending all over the world, following her romance with a 23-Year old lover-boy.

Sadly, the love between 52-year-old Neymar’s mum, Nadine Goncalves, and her Brazilian boyfriend, Tiago Ramos, has gone sour, after she found out he dated men before her.

According to reports, Neymar only gave his seal of approval to the relationship less than a fortnight ago – 10 days ago.

But it now appears that Nadine has ended the relationship after discovering that he had dated various men prior to their first meeting.

Tiago, who is six years younger than Neymar, allegedly dated the PSG and Brazil star’s personal chef, Mauro, before becoming romantically involved with the forward’s mother.

It has also been claimed that he was dating a famous Brazilian actor and stand-up comedian called Carlinhos Maia.

Reports from Brazil state that Ramos is a model, who is also part of a gaming team named 4K Easy. However, it remained  unclear why he began dating Neymar’s mother, although Ramos was pictured at the former Barcelona star’s lavish birthday party in February.

Tiago is now reportedly back with his family in Brazil after being kicked out of Nadine’s mansion.

He posted a video on Instagram of himself playing a computer game with his mother and sister on Wednesday.

Nadine was married to Neymar’s father, Wagner Ribeiro, who is an agent, for 25 years – but they split up in 2016.

The innocence is off. Imo’s virginity has been broken by a deadly disease. And, perhaps so would the I-don’t-care attitude of most Imo citizens who think Coronavirus is a lie; that it does not exist.

Finally, the state has recorded its first confirmed case of COVID-19.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, made the announcement on its verified Twitter handle Saturday night.

It said: “One new state, Imo, has reported a confirmed case within 24 hours.

“Till date 1,182 cases have been confirmed nationwide, 222 discharged, 35 deaths recorded in 28 states and the FCT.”

COVID-19: Worries, Questions Over Atiku’s Son

Atiku and his Son Mohammed

By Charles Igbo

Anxiety and worries reign supreme amongst friends and associates of the family of former Vice President, and Presidential Candidate of the PDP in the 2015 Presidential Elections, Abubakar Atiku.

Over  five weeks ( March 19) after his son, Mohammed Atiku, tested positive for Coronavirus, little or nothing has been heard of his situation.

His father had announced his positive status to Nigerians, via his official Twitter handle, and asked for prayers.

Mohammed Atiku, 31, is believed to have contracted the Virus while on a business trip abroad. He arrived Nigeria through Lagos, and proceeded on an Aero flight to Abuja after a round of meeting in Lagos. While in Lagos, he stayed at his private residence.

It was in Abuja that he manifested the symptoms of the disease, and was promptly moved to an Isolation Centre.

Governor of Bauchi state, Bala Mohammed, who announced he contracted the disease from him, on the Aero flight, on shaking hands with him, an allegation the younger Atiku denied, has since recovered,  and discharged.

But nothing has been heard of the young businessman-son of the former Vice President.

Anxiety peaked a couple of days ago when an unconfirmed story made the rounds that he had been moved to the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital. An Online site, Ebonyitvnews, was the first to carry the story.

The story stated: “After undergoing all the necessary medication, including immune boosting viamins, he has continued to test positive for the Virus”

It added that he had been taken to the ICU for more attention.

But a source dismissed the ICU story as false. The source admitted that Atiku still had the Virus in his body , but is very stable, and recovering fast. “There is no particular number of days for recovery. In some people the Virus can be stubborn, but they would disappear. He is in good hands.

Yet, another source insisted that “the youngman has been discharged from the hospital after recovering. The family did not want to go public with his discharge considering the interest it generated when his father announced he had tested positive for the disease.”

There is no confirmation from the family, but opinion is that Atiku, who donated the sum of  N50, 000, 000m to the FG to fight the disease,  would not shy away from sharing the joy of his son’s recovery with Nigerians, especially, as he was the one who made his positive status public.

There has been palpable fear in Kano over the high profile deaths allegedly connected to the Coronavirus Pandemics. Kano State’s testing center was closed down for decontamination after a number of its staff tested positive for the virus. Samples are now sent to Abuja for results. Of the 489 samples sent, according to the governor, Umar Ghanduje, 74 tested positive for COVID 19.
All the deaths, according to reports, occurred within 24 hours.
The deaths include Prof. Ibrahim Ayagi; professor of physiology, Prof. Aliyu Abdullahi Umar Dikko; the Regional Manager of First Bank in Kano, Abdullahi Lawal; former Managing Director (MD) of the Defunct Continental Merchant Bank; and Mallam Musa Ahmad Tijjani, former Editor of Leadership Sunday and Triumph newspapers, Alh. Adam Iliyasu Dal, erstwhile Chairman of the Kano State Civil Service Commission Nasiru Maikano Bichi; Dr. Musa Umar Gwarzo; and Ustaz Dahiru Rabiu, former Grand Khadi of Kano State.

Kano has been in the news for record great dyings, as they appear to have not taken the coronavirus pandemic seriously. Only recently they organized a football match with the field packed full with not less than ten thousand people without social distancing.
The governor has been busy demanding more money than Lagos, which was given N10 billion to fight the pandemic. He demanded N15 billion. Meanwhile, he appears to be doing nothing to contain the virus apart from deporting Almajiris from the state.
More than 150 deaths were reported in Kano within the last one month.
