FG Went Too Far, I Have No Account, Property, Abroad – Jonathan

Former President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan says his commitment to Nigeria is total, insisting that he has no account or property abroad.

Dr Jonathan was reacting to reports in the  international Media to the effect that the Federal Government has subpoenaed banks for the details of his  bank accounts and that of his wife, Dame Patience Jonathan.

The former President said that the FG didn’t need to go that far, because if he had been asked, he would have advised that the move was a waste of time because he had no such money or properties abroad. He recalled that on March 5, 2014, he had told Nigerians that: ” I am loyal to Nigeria’s Economy. I don’t have accounts or properties abroad”.

He regretted the FG’s move saying that while in office, he treated every former President or Head of State with utmost respect and dignity the office deserves. He said he did so because of his belief that the promotion  protection, and projection, of Nigeria’s sovereignty and image were the paramount duty of his  government because, “it is not possible to belittle Nigerians without belittling Nigeria.”

Following is Jonathan’s reaction, signed on his behalf, by his Media aide, Ike Eze.

“Our attention has been drawn to international media reports to the effect that the Federal Government of Nigeria has subpoenaed bank records for former President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Dame Patience Jonathan in the United States of America.

“We aver that the Federal Government of Nigeria did not contact Dr. Jonathan or his wife before issuing these subpoenas. If they had, we would have advised them of the fact that you cannot subpoena what does not exist.

“We also remind the public that on March 5, 2014, during the swearing in of new ministers, then President Jonathan said “I am loyal to Nigeria’s economy. I don’t have accounts or property abroad.”

“We are confident in stating that between that time and now, nothing has changed with regards to Dr. Goodluck Jonathan. He has no accounts in the United States of America, and encourages US authorities to cooperate fully with the Federal Government of Nigeria’s  subpoena.

“We would also like to state that during his tenure as President of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan extended every courtesy to former Presidents and Heads of state, because he believed and still believes that promoting, projecting and protecting Nigeria’s sovereignty and image is the paramount duty of her government, because it is not possible to belittle Nigerians without belittling Nigeria.

“Finally, we state that the signing of the P&ID contracts preceded the Jonathan administration, and that that government gave appropriate counsel to the incoming government in the handover notes of 2015, which advice, if carried out, would have prevented the current unfortunate circumstances.

By Tosin Olatokunbo

President Donald Trump of the United States of America has assured the federal government of provision of ventilators, a prized equipment in the fight against the corona virus pandemic.

The American leader stated this during a conversation he had with President Muhammadu Bihari today.

The US has only been able to secure 10,000 ventilators for its citizens, also ravaged by the pandemic, Trump said yesterday at the White House daily media briefing on COVID 19.

In spite of problems at home, Trump said his country stand with Nigeria in her quest to defeat the pandemic, according to the personal Assistant to the President, Bashir Ahmad, who disclosed this on his Twitter handle.

He tweeted, “President Muhammadu Buhari had a phone conversation with the US President Donald Trump today, the two leaders discussed Nigeria’s efforts to defeat the COVID–19 Pandemic, and President Trump pledged US support and solidarity. #COVID19Nigeria”

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Muhammed, said the telephone conversation wass on the request of Trump.

He described the conversation between the presidents as fruitful.

Mohammed said, “President @MBuhari today had a phone conversation with President Donald Trump, at the request of the American President. The conversation centred on Nigeria’s response to the #COVID19 pandemic”-HMIC, Alh. Lai Mohammed

President Buhari used the opportunity to brief the American President on the steps that Nigeria is taking to contain the spread of the disease.

For his part, President Trump assured that the United States stands in solidarity with Nigeria in this difficult time and promised to send ventilators to support the country in its fight against the pandemic. President Trump also extends his best regards to the people of Nigeria.”

Trump had on Monday disclosed that 10,000 ventilators are currently being used by health workers in US to support critically sick patients of COVID 19, he said, efforts are being made to produce more.

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje

By Fola James

After the death of at least six professors and other top officials, Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano state has accused the President Muhammadu Buhari –led federal government for abandoning the state in the time of need.

The president is very popular in the state and his political successes can also be linked to the ancient city.

Governor Ganduje’s frustration followed the denial by his government that corona virus was responsible for the deaths.

Some health experts including, the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control, NCDC the agency in the fore front of fighting the spread of the novel virus has not come to any conclusion.

But in his tirade against the federal government, the state governor said his state has not received any assistance.

Recall that the governor has recently shocked many after he accused the federal government of focusing more on Lagos state, which it said is rich enough to handle the pandemic and does not need external assistance.

In an interview with the BBC Hausa Service on Monday, the governor said the Presidential Task Force, PTF has not paid enough attention to the state.

He said the PTF under the leadership of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha has not provided enough support for the state in terms on making available laboratory materials, personnel and others.

He stated that there is a shortage of sample collection equipment, and that the laboratory in the state is not functioning.

Ganduje who lamented the situation said “We are in a serious problem. I can tell you the situation is really bad and scary. Because what we solely rely upon in fighting the disease is the testing centre.

There is also a shortage of sample collection equipment. It is not common equipment that you can go and buy in the market.

Those whose samples were collected are still waiting to know their fate.

He said further that “There is a serious problem. We have been complaining that Kano needs more than one testing centre, right from the beginning of this.

Sincerely speaking, we are not getting deserved attention. If these equipment are under our control, we will do our best to make sure it works properly.

But we are not getting the needed support and co-operation from the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19.”

The magazine learnt that the state and NCDC have differed on how to tackle the increasing number of deaths in the state, even though the director general of the agency, Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu met with Governor Ganduje last week over the matter.

According to sources, PTF officials are unhappy with the manner the state government has handled the pandemic.

They are mostly worried that the issue must have been politicized by the state government, thus limiting the intervention of the NCDC.

Meanwhile, the magazine leant that the decision by the NCDC to re-open the only COVID 19 testing centre in the state is as a result of the intervention of President Buhari.

The president has also been receiving pressure to visit the state in the light of the death toll that has continued to rise.

But Aso Rock sources told the magazine that the president will not visit the state at this time.

CBN: Fears As Apex Bank Lifts Suspension On Cheques

0

The worries over clearing of cheques is now over following the decision of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN to lift the suspension it imposed on March 31 as part of the corona virus lock down imposed by President Muhammadu Buhari.

A statement released by the apex bank on Monday, Signed by it Director, Banking Services Department, Sam Okojere, said customers can now approach their various Deposit Money Banks, DMBs to clear their backlogged of cheques.

The development came on the crest of President Buhari’s decision to relax the partial lock down imposed on Lagos, Ogun and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.

Within the over one month period that the CBN’s suspension lasted, customers struggle between using the virtual banking or internet banking or not transacting financial business at all.

The situation has been made worse by fluctuation in internet services by major GSM providers in the country.

Customers can now decide what payment instrument to adopt for any of their financial transaction, the CBN said.

The circular also read, “In furtherance of its efforts in the development of a safe and efficient payment system in Nigeria, the bank in collaboration with relevant stakeholders has reviewed the need for cheque clearing to accommodate users of cheque as one of the payment instruments in Nigeria, despite the lockdown of some states and the Federal Capital Territory.

In view of this development, the bank hereby lifts the temporary suspension of cheque clearing in Nigeria. Consequently, cheque instruments will be allowed to pass through the clearing system, with effect from April 28, 2020.”

Meanwhile, analysts have raised concern that the suspension could be catastrophic in the sense that most DMBs are likely to experience overcrowding from agitated customers during the week, who may want to clear their cheques, a situation that could compromise the social distancing necessary to flatten the curve of the COVID 19 pandemic.

They insist that Banks must put in extra measures recommended by the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control, NCDC to guard against the spread of the novel virus in the country.

Tinubu’s Chief Security Officer, ASP Lateef Raheem, had died last Friday. While many people, including a couple of his aides suspected that Raheem, who had been with Tinubu since 1999, when he first became Lagos Governor, died of COVID-19, an official release from Tinubu’s camp insisted he died of complications from diabetes and high blood pressure. He was at work on Monday, and passed on a few days later.

When the news broke that Tinubu had gone on self-quarantine, based on Raheem’s sudden death, he had quickly denied it.

But, on Monday, he walked back the line.

In a release which, at once, smacked of excitement and sombreness, Tinubu announced that he and his wife, Remy, a Senator, had tested negative to the disease, but revealed that his COS had died of it. He, also, said that another of his aides had tested positive for the disease, and was quickly evacuated by the NCDC for treatment.

It turned out he died of the Virus when the result came back on Monday. He also disclosed that as a precautionary measure, others, including Tinubu and his wife, took the test.

The results came back negative, except that of one other aide.

What is not, however, known is if NCDC/WHO protocols and guidelines were followed at the burial of Raheem, given the initial denial, and, since, as a Muslim faithful, ha was buried immediately after his passing.

Atiku and his Son Mohammed

By Charles Igbo

Fresh from a COVID-19 Isolation Centre, and experiencing freedom for the first time in 40 days, Mohammed Atiku, son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, said his experience at the centre has humbled him. He also said he had learnt lessons.

Mohammed entered the Isolation Centre at the University of Abuja, Gwagwalada on February 27, to be treated for COVID-19 for which he had tested positive.

On being released, the 31 year-old, said: “This is one of the everlasting lessons I can’t forget for the rest of my life.

“Indeed, I have been humbled by this experience. Words cannot sufficiently convey the depth of my joy over my recovery and discharge”.

His relieved father, Atiku Abubakar, who had the difficult job of announcing his son’s COVID-19 status, also, had the joyous job of announcing his negative status, and discharge from hospital. In a message, he said: “With gratitude to God, we are excited. It couldn’t have come at a better time of the Ramadan

“I thank you all for your prayers, even as we remain indebted to the medical personnel who have stayed tireless in their efforts”

Mohammed’s 40-day stay at the Isolation Centre, ranks as the longest for any known patient in Nigeria. It brought a lot of anxiety and worries, with speculations, flying.

A couple of days ago, the stories made the rounds that he had been moved to the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital since he was still positive. But another story said he had been quietly released.

Both turned out false, as he was released only Monday evening.

Mohammed contracted the disease on a business trip abroad. He tested positive as soon as he came back.

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, who also tested positive for COVID-19,  had alleged that he contracted it from Mohammed Atiku on an Aero Airline flight from Lagos to Abuja, when he shook hands with him.

But Atiku Jnr. dismissed the claim, saying they never shook hands, that they only waved at each other on the plane, revealing that the Governor had just come back from Germany.
