Edo 2020: Gov. Obaseki Warns APC, Promises Clampdown; Meets Gov Wike In PH

Obaseki meets Wike

By Akinwale Kasali

The road to a political realignment began on Sunday when the embattled Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State travelled to PH, Rivers State, to meet with Governor Nyesom Wike.

Obaseki has just been disqualified by his party, the APC, from taking part in the June 22 Primaries during which the party will pick a candidate for the Governorship election. His disqualification, even though wrapped and presented in the guise of his educational qualification, is a direct consequence of his bitter quarrel with his political godfather, Adams Oshiomhole, the National Chairman of the APC.

Rejected and orphaned by his party, Obaseki is desperately looking for a platform on which he would contest the governorship election.

The PDP seems the most attractive platform, and though it had been reported that he had registered with the PDP in his Oredo Ward 4, it is not official. And he is still consulting.

On Sunday, June 14, he said he would make no move until he meets with President Muhamnadu Buhari. But apparently, in his fight for political survival, he thinks that, at least, one person should be met before his appointment with the President is confirmed.

The person is Wike, the strong man of the PDP.

Even though the reason for their meeting is not known, it is not likely to be far from Obaseki’s political future, and his imminent, official, decampment to the PDP.

Obaseki’s trip to   PH, came a day after he fired a warning, that his government would clampdown on any gathering of more than 20 people. Those at such gatherings, he warned, would, also, be prosecuted.

He told political parties planning to hold their governorship primary elections that restriction on gatherings of over 20 persons is still in place in the state.

The restriction, he said, is to curb the spread of coronavirus in the state.

The Governor said this while giving an update on COVID-19 situation in the state via his Twitter handle on Saturday.

Not a few people think that his warning, though proper, is aimed at his enstranged party, the APC. The APC has scheduled to hold  its primary on June 22, using the Direct Primary method. Obaseki, before he was schemed out, wanted the indirect primary method.

The top political parties in the State, the APC and the PDP have scheduled their primaries for June 22 and 19 respectively. But the PDP may, likely, shift its date to accommodate Obaseki.

While the APC adopted the direct primary, PDP would be conducting its primaries using the indirect method.

Obaseki said, “In view of the upcoming elections and to reduce infection transmission rates during political gatherings, I have issued a gazette that provides guidance on how political parties can conduct their activities.

“There remains a restriction on gatherings for more than 20 persons. However, where higher numbers of persons are required to gather, permit with specified location, guidelines and supervision may be granted by the @EdoStateGovt.”

The governor, also, said schools remained closed in the state, adding that: “In line with the Presidential Task Force recommendations for States, the curfew starting from 10.00pm to 4.00am still subsists.

In another development, the PDP is presently in talks with Governor Obaseki over the conditions listed for him to get their tickets for the Edo State Governorship Election.

The PDP, according to sources, has directed Governor Obaseki to meet with the three governorship aspirants already screened by the party’s screening committee for the primary.

The three screened PDP aspirants are Gideon Ikhine, Ogbeide Ihama and Kenneth Imansuangbon. One of them has been so vocal, insisting that he would not step down for the governor.

But the PDP National Working Committee and other stakeholders in the State are said to be working round the clock to pacify him.

Edo state governor Godwin Obaseki has been spotted in rivers state Government House, Port Harcourt, with governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state.

Obaseki has been in the news recently when his own party disqualified him from contesting for the governorship primaries under the aegis of the party. This magazine had reported that he swiftly crossed over to the PDP secretariat and picked up a membership form. This was confirmed by the PDP in their verified twitter account. But other reports had insisted he is yet to make his final decision known.

Governor Wike Sunday twitted pictures of himself and the Edo state counterpart in Port Harcourt Government house.

It is expected that they will chart the way forward on Obaseki’s political future within the PDP.

This is a developing story…

Buhari’s N30 trn Debt Saved Nigerian Banks

By Fola James

Babatunde Raji Fashola, the minister of works has disclosed that President Muhamadu Buhari saved Nigerian banks from collapsing.

He said it would be very difficult for the deposit money banks, DMBs to survive without government borrowing.

The administration has received virulent criticism over the country’s rising debt.

Nigeria’s local and foreign debt, according to the Debt Management Office, DMO has hit over N33 trillion the last five years.

But the minister, said Thursday in an interview that the debt issue has been misconstrued.

Fashola said on the vexed debt issue “Let me say this about borrowing. Many people criticise it because they do not understand.

If the government doesn’t borrow, a critical sector of the Nigerian economy may collapse –  that is the financial and banking sector. The biggest business as to which banks make money is to lend.”

Borrowing helps the banks because “That is where they get interests to pay customers. It is by that lending that the government and private sector make profit. So, it is critical employment also.It is legitimate to hear those who are concerned about borrowing.”

He said borrowed funds have been used meticulously by government in providing critical infrastructure.

“The infrastructural development of president Buhari is touching more lives than people have acknowledged,” the minister said..

Banana Island Under Siege As Sanwolu Seals More Buildings

By Uche Mbah

The Lagos state government has continued its sealing of houses it considers inappropriately planned in high brow Banana Island as it has sealed 19 more buildings bringing the total number of buildings sealed to 34.

The state government started the process of sealing buildings Wednesday,  June 10, 2020.

The exercise, which was led by the Lagos state commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban development, Idris Salako, claims it is in furtherance to the efforts of the state government to control physical development and engender a livable and sustainable environment in the state.

All buildings marked are said to have been built in violation of planning laws, and therefore dangers to human habitation. But speculations are rife that the marked buildings may never be demolished as the owners are reaching out to the government on the way forward for both parties. Sources within the Island accuse the government of trying to use the demolition threat to “extort money from the owners. “In the end, nothing go happen as long as the owners play ball”, a source said.

Banana Island is a haven for the nouveau rich in the society and harbors the money bags in Lagos state. It is a zone for the high and mighty and many millionaires from across the country have their home there. It has hitherto been regarded as an untouchable zone, as real estate cost runs into billions of naira. Most houses, however, are evaluated in dollars.

But Salako was reported as decrying the encroachment by some developers in the planned lagoon highway, notifying of government intention to nip the development in the bud.

Meanwhile, there are reports that some of the government seals on some properties are being broken by the owners without recourse to government, in defiance. This has fueled speculations that some of the owners are holding the state government in disdain. Some of the officials are said to be harassed during the sealing process, a situation the state government decries, but seems to have taken no action against.

The operation is expected to continue this week.

Covid-19: Fashola Reveals How Nigeria Fed Many Countries; Angry Nigerians React

0

By Akinwale Kasali

The revelation by Minister For Works, Babatunde Raji Fashola, that Nigeria played the big brother role to many countries that begged it for food during the Covid-19 Pandemic outbreak has sparked outrage among Nigerians who complained about the neglect by the Federal Government to its Citizens during same period.

The Federal Government said many neighbouring countries asked Nigeria for food during the lockdown occasioned by coronavirus pandemic.

Fashola made this known during an Instagram Live Chat with City People Magazine.

The Minister who spoke on the COVID-19 Economic Sustainability Plan recently submitted by Vice-President, Yemi Osinbajo, to the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), said the plan contains diverse measures to fortify the Nigerian economy against any shock from the pandemic.

Fashola said, “We are looking at constructing roads with more stones, more cement, more iron rods so that more people will be employed. For example, it will take 14 people to build a kilometre of road. So, if you are doing more kilometres, it will demand more labour and materials, so, these are some of the bolts and nuts of that plan.

“Agriculture is another critical part of the Economic Sustainability Plan. We want to increase the cultivatable lands in the country. We are currently cultivating just about one-third and I stand to be corrected on that figure – the minister of agriculture knows the numbers than I do. But in his presentation, as I recollect it, we are not cultivating enough lands. We want to double cultivation, increase food output, not just for local use but for export.

“I must say to Nigerians that because of the success of the agriculture programme which is still evolving, during this COVID exercise, many countries were writing to us from near and far, asking us to please supply them food. This is not in the public space but President Buhari’s priority was, tell them to wait, we must feed our people first before we send out food, we don’t know when this is going to end.

“So, we want to see more value-added in the sector in terms of processing and cultivation. We are losing an unsatisfactory quantity of our agro produce to many factors – transport, cooling, heating and so on. These are some of the components that the Ministry of Agriculture will share in the next few months about how to ensure that we preserve many more of what we produce and lose less.”

The former governor of Lagos State also noted that the National Housing Project which started in 2016 is still ongoing. He stressed that the Ministry of Housing understudied the type of houses Nigerians liked to live in because “cultural differences impact on the way people live”.

He said, “We learnt from the previous National Housing Scheme during the Shagari era that not everybody liked the way the Shagari houses were built. Whilst it was a laudable initiative by that administration, it did not really respond fully to all the aspirations of Nigerians in terms of the type of houses they want to live in.

“In all the 34 states which gave us lands, we have completed the houses. We have now started a second phase in many of those houses close to where the first phase was.”

Beyond building houses, the Senior Advocate said his ministry was providing “Site and Service Scheme” for people who don’t want the government to build houses for them but want the government’s protection and amenities like potable water, steady power, amongst others.

“All over the world, the truism is that not everybody will be able to own a home but they deserve some kind of shelter. Some people have to rent. So, the Federal Government provides Home Renovation Loan which helps some people subsidise their rent, renovate their houses and so forth.

“We are also intervening in the housing sector by issuing titled documents. We’re issuing Certificates of Occupancy. I have signed over 3,400 C of Os in the last two years,” he added.

On federal road projects, Fashola said, “We are making appreciable progress, we have over 600 different contracts. We had hoped that this year, we will complete about 22 major roads between this year and 2021. We have lost three months which is March and now (June) which is our most prolific period before the rainy season. But we will pick up sometimes around September.”

On the case management of the novel coronavirus disease, the minister said, “We were better equipped with information at the time Ebola broke out. The Ebola Virus has been under observation and study especially in East and Central Africa for over 40 years. So, there was a lot of knowledge about its parameters, what to expect, what not to expect. And it was with that information that we were able to respond.

“Those who are battling coronavirus today have only six months knowledge of this virus. So, the parameters of what to look for are constantly changing. In the beginning, we thought that temperature was a good standard – that everybody who had it will have high temperature.

“We now know better that some people will have no symptoms at all. Some people lose sense of taste, they lose their sense of smell, they have headache. I know there are many scientists in the world today doing a lot of research, pathology works from those who have been infected and died trying to understudy the virus.

“What to do now is to follow new advise, wear masks, keep social distancing. If we do that, we will help health workers reduce their workload and help them lead us out of this pandemic.

Controversy Trails FG’s N13 Billion Pest Control In 12 Northern States

The Federal Government has been criticized by Nigerians for neglecting some regions in the country following the approval of  N13 billion, as intervention fund, for pest control in 12 northern states, to reduce the effects of COVID-19 on the nation’s food sector.

The 12 `frontline’ states, to benefit from the fund are Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa, Taraba, Yobe and Borno States.

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development made the disclosure in a statement issued on Saturday.

The Minister, Alhaji Muhammad Nanono, said that the intervention fund was to ensure uninterrupted agricultural activities during the 2020 farming season in the states.

He explained that the fund would also be used to control trans-boundary pests and minimise the impact of COVID – 19 as well as guarantee nutritional and national food security.

Nanono emphasised that the present administration “is determined to fight any menace that will truncate the successes recorded so far in the agricultural sector”.

He said that government was mindful of reports of desert locust outbreaks in East Africa and the Middle East with the possibility of a spillover of locust swarms into West Africa and Nigeria.

According to the statement, the minister also performed the flag-off of the 2020 dry season control of trans-boundary migratory birds for the 12 frontline northern states at the Birnin Kebbi International Airport in Kebbi.

Nanono said that the flag-off was performed in Kebbi because of the state’s extensive agricultural activities.

“The choice of Kebbi State for the flag off is deliberate, in view of the extensive agricultural activities in the state and the immense cooperation  and collaboration of the state government in the implementation of agricultural interventions over the years,” Nanono said.

Shooting In Villa: Alarmed, PDP Charges President Buhari to Speak Out

By Adesina Soyooye

Alarmed at the alleged shooting inside the Presidential Villa, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to speak out.

Since the reported shooting, allegedly, by the security details of First Lady Aisha, at a Presidential Aide, the Presidency has said nothing.

The alleged unfortunate shooting was first reported by an Online medium, Sahara Reporters. Initially, many found the story unbelievable.

But Mrs Buhari gave credence to it by the tweets on her Twitter Handle, where she asked the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Mohammed Adamu, to release her aides from detention.

Until the First Lady’s suprising tweets, nobody would have imagined that the IGP could detain her aides without her knowledge, and/or express permission.

But shocked like most Nigerians,  the PDP, in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, said the party “is alarmed by the reported shooting and security breaches within the precincts of the Presidential villa following a reported degenerated squabble among family members and officials of the Buhari Presidency.”

The statement further noted that:  “The PDP is deeply worried that the protracted spat between the First Lady, Aisha Buhari, and aides of President Muhammadu Buhari has now degenerated into violent combats, raids and free use of firearms within the Presidential villa.”

The party described as distressing, the report that  members of Mr. President’s family were at the scene of the assault against one of President Buhari’s aides, during which the First Lady’s security details were alleged to have resorted to the use of firearms.

“Our party is disturbed by such ugly situation in the Buhari Presidency, which has already heightened apprehensions in the public space over the apparent failure of security architecture and central command system in the presidency leading to such reckless and irresponsible breaches.

“The chaotic situation in the Presidential villa only points to the failure by President Buhari to provide a leadership that can guarantee orderliness in governance and effectively ensure the security of our nation.

“The PDP notes that such leadership failure at the highest level has further exposed why our nation has been bedeviled by myriads of security and economic problems under President Buhari’s watch in the last five years.

“More worrisome is that the Buhari Presidency had failed to speak out on the frightening situation so as to reassure Nigerians and douse the tension in the polity; especially at this critical time when our nation is facing serious security challenges.

“The PDP, therefore, calls on President Buhari to take immediate steps to restore order in his Presidency and shield our security system from the division and power tussle among persons close to him.

“Our party, also, demands for an immediate inquest into the security breaches as well as the alleged violation of COVID-19 ban on inter-state travels by officials and relations of Mr. President, which was reported to be part of the immediate causes of latest disturbances in the Presidential villa.

“Furthermore, the PDP urges the National Assembly to save the nation by wading into the persistent infighting in the Buhari Presidency especially as those in charge of the Presidential villa have not demonstrated the required capacity to engender the needed orderliness for productive governance.”

This will not be the First time the First Lady would tango with somebody in the Villa. The viral video of Mrs Buhari asking the Mamman Dauras to evacuate from an apartment in the Villa, remains unforgettable. She has stormed the apartment, asking Daura’s daughter what they were still doing in the apartment, meant for her recuperating son to stay.  Daura’s daughter fed the social media with the disturbing video.

In another incident, she publicly called Shehu Garba, the President’s Senior Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, disloyal, and asked him to resign from office.

There is no price to win by knowing that the resignation never took place.

All the above are different from her allegation, on more than one occasion, that a cabal had taken over the Presidency.
