Paul Onuachu

By Akinwale Kasali

Super Eagles and Genk Football Club of Belgium gangling Striker, Paul Onuachu, has tested positive for the deadly Covid-19 Pandemic.

Onuachu, who was tested alongside his teammates, was the only one positive, while his club mates and compatriots Stephen Odey and Cyril Dessers tested negative.

The Magazine gathered that Onuachu’s positive COVID-19 status   remains the only positive case in the club.

“In the run-up to the first exhibition game of the season, the entire Genk group was tested yesterday (Tuesday). Everyone tested negative except Onuachu,” a report on Belgian website hln.be stated.

The 6ft 7in striker left Belgium for Nigeria on May 27, alongside fellow Eagles strikers Victor Osimhen and Imoh Ezekiel.

He returned to his club on June 28 after he was stranded for a week in Lagos due to travel restrictions caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

According to hln.be, Onuachu will miss Genk’s first exhibition game of the season against Eendracht Termien on Thursday as he will be quarantined for a week.

Onuachu’s COVID-19 status has, however, raised concerns within the Genk squad as he had trained intensively with the rest of the squad for more than a week now.

Onuachu joined Genk from Danish club FC Midtjylland last summer and scored 10 goals for the club before the Belgian Pro Division season was ended abruptly due to COVID-19.

Restructuring: Adams, Tinubu Rift Gets Messier, As Group Slams Tinubu, Calls Him A Businessman In Politics Without Ideology

0
Tinubu and Gani Adams

By Akinwale Kasali

There seems to be no end to the ongoing brickbat between Yoruba Generalissimo, Aare Onakankanfo, Iba Gani Ige Adams and a Chieftain of the All Progresssives Congress, APC, National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.  The trade of words among the two men has become very messy.

The Director of Communication, Aare Onakakanfo Strategic Intervention Group, ASIG, Olajide Odumosu, has dismissed Tinubu, as a business man in politics with no ideology.

Speaking while reacting to the recent story in the media where the Coordinator of Bola Tinubu Disciples Organization, BTDO, Agarawu Wasiu, described Gani Adams, as an ingrate, a traitor and a misfit for the Yoruba race.

Odumosu said with the story, the speaker has done more damage to the reputation of the APC leader than good, disclosing that Agarawu rather than addressing issues raised in the said interview, decided to go haywire, raining insulting words on the personality of  Gani Adams

He admitted that the interview with Yoruba Heritage Online Television was just a tip of the iceberg.

“Having gone through the story, it is obvious that Tinubu’s Disciples Organization are nothing but a large group of loose cannons that are ready to mortgage the future of the Yoruba race.

In the interview with the London- based online Television, Gani Adams raised four issues revolving around the state of the nation and the future of the Yoruba race.

While responding to the questions, Aare said Tinubu had no interest in the actualization of Oodua republic and restructuring.

Agarawu, had, in the statement, described Yoruba’s quest for restructuring as the most taunted, thus justifying Aare’s stand that his leader-Tinubu – had no interest on restructuring.

Aare said the former Lagos state governor was never a member of any Yoruba sociocultural group, where leaders are properly trained and built with Yoruba ideology and philosophy

“He was groomed by the late General Shehu Yar’Adua, under Premous group- a political dynasty of the late politician.

“Tinubu’s political background is alien to Yoruba ideology and that his campaign for presidency, two months after the swearing- in of president Muhammadu Buhari’s second term in office was ill-timed and a distraction to the APC government” .

“All the issues raised in the said interview were nothing but the truth because they outweighed the response from Agarawu”

“Tinubu’s quest for power is Hitlerish and no sane Yoruba man will like to identify with the former governor of Lagos state. He should name three unique things he had done for the Yoruba race”

” Tinubu had a hand in the break up of all the socio cultural groups in Yorubaland, Afenifere, OPC, YCE, others. He whittled down the popularity of PRONACO”

“The OPC under Aare’s leadership broke up into groups. He sponsored the renegades in Somolu, Ilorin, and Ibadan. Now those groups have gone under and they are of no relevance at the moment”.

” Afenifere had a bitter story to tell about him. The Yoruba socio cultural group had been in existence since 1948,he had infiltrated the group with Afenifere Renewal group. He went to the presidency with another group led by Pa Ayo Fasanmi, saying they are the authentic Afenifere. YCE is presently another victim of Tinubu’s political chicanery”,he said

“The new Yoruba World Congress that is just starting are presently feeling the heat of his infiltration, with some of its top member resigning with no genuine reason”

“Even there was an unconfirmed reports that the Lagos state government slowed down on the implementation of the Amotekun Security outfit because they are waiting for Bourdillion’s go ahead, even as it is evident that his body language on Amotekun across the southwest is nothing to write home about. All these are evidences against Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu” he said.

“While serving his unjust detention in prison, Obasanjo decided to deal with Aare Gani Adams. And one of his reasons then was because of his closeness to Tinubu.

“He was was released from detention after fourteen months that was between October 2005 and December 2006.

“He said Aare was an ingrate. Let him justify this. Has he built a house for Aare Gani Adams? Did he buy a car or sponsor Aare’s education? Or did he spend any money for the development of the OPC as organization? When Okiro arrested him in 2001,did he pay for his legal fees?

“Even during the installation ceremony of the Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland on January 13, 2018 in Oyo, did he contribute financially or send any representative? He didn’t.

“These are questions begging for answers.

“In 2007 when Aare Gani Adams launched his book “Leadership challenge” at Museum Centre, Honourable Tunde Balogun, Tinubu’s representative at the book launch promised to give Aare five million Naira, but up till today, he didn’t fulfill his promise.

“In 2005,Tinubu offered Aare Adams a two-bedroom apartments at Lagos state Low Cost Housing Estate, Ojokoro,Meiran, Lagos but he rejected it.The last time Aare meet with him was in 2009.So why is he after Aare?

“The position of Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland is that of a traditional warlord of the Yoruba race. As the Yoruba generalisimo and cultural aficionado, he has sworn on an oath to defend the Yoruba race and this is what he has been doing, Any Aareonakakanfo of Yorubaland must say the truth at the right time, no matter who is involved. And the Aare Gani Adams I know is up to the task.

“Therefore, it is a complete misinterpretation of words to say Aare Gani Adams is a misfit for the Yoruba race.”

The Broad Day Arrest, Grilling And Detention Of Magu: The Vanity Of Power

0

By Mike Ozekhome, SAN, OFR, FCIARB, Ph.D.,LL.D.

Mr Ibrahim Magu has been acting as EFCC Chairman for over five years. The Senate, on two  occasions, refused to confirm him, based on clear report on damning allegations of corruption leveled against him by Government secret agency, the DSS.

Magu’s compromised supporters and cheap publicists, eating from his table and those afraid of public denigration in the so called “anti- corruption war, ” hailed and ‘ranka dede-d’ him. They  abused the Senate and spat on people with plural voices, who dared call for Magu’s sack, or at least, his voluntary resignation.

Such paid grovellers, bootlickers and historical revisionists always claimed that “corruption is fighting back’. They were not interested in the truism or otherwise of the available cold facts. It was simply enough that their cold-blooded god and power bacchanalian diety who had terrorised everyone to submission, must be appeased on the alter of  obsequious, servile and sycophantic coven.

Everyone spoke only in whispers, at best in soliloquy or monologue .The fear of Magu for everyone was the beginning of wisdom. Not quite everyone really. But, nearly everyone, for I refused to be brow-beaten or intimidated by such blatant primordial display of asinine power.

I fought on. I criticised. I critiqued. I challenged him and his impunity severally in courts across Nigeria. I won virtually all the cases. I called for a change of the way and manner the ‘anti- corruption war ‘ was being selectively and opaqualey fought.

I wrote a public letter in 2017, to the then Acting  President, Prof Yemi Osibanjo, SAN, at a time his boss, President Muhammadu Buhari, was sick on London hospital bed. I complained bitterly, with facts, figures and data, that recovered, looted funds and property, were being re-looted by the Magu-led team, who were supposed to keep the gate of our Commonwealth.

They looted our treasury in collaboration with their cronies, friends and acolytes. Magu was the new Sheriff in town. I got no reply to my letter to Osibanjo.I wrote a reminder. No dice. I later challenged Magu publicly, face-to-face on, at least, three occasions, one of which was at a ceremony at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Another was at a capacity-building workshop organised by the EFCC at its training Academy, in Karu, Abuja, which he graciously personally invited me to. He refused to change his ugly ways.

It was clear to me and deserning Nigerians that power had gotten into his bald head. Power is an afrodisiac, an intoxicating liquor. It bemuses. It gives delusional ‘Dutch courage’. It forces reason to vacate its seat. So, for over five whole years, Magu continued to work as Acting Chairman of the EFCC, inspite of the clear provisions of section 2(3) of the EFCC (Establishment) Act, 2004, which provides that the Senate must confirm him before he could continue in his office.

He recruited expert ‘Constitutional Lawyers” who argued that Magu could stay in office till Kingdom come, whether or not Senate confirmed his appointment. The Senate, the EFCC Act and even the Constitution could go to hell. Afterall, Magu was irreplaceable and was doing an incredibly marvelous job of ‘fighting corruption’.’

But, once upon a time, on a God-appointed day like that of yesterday, divinely accorded the EFCC’s  ‘anti-corruption’ Czar, imperious Ibrahim Magu, one courageous and dare-delivery man and former Governor of Ekiti State, called Peter ‘the rock’ Ayodele Fayose (Osokomole), led by his fearless, dogged and courageous lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome, SAN, voluntarily submitted himself to the EFCC , less than 24 hours after leaving office as Governor .

He adorned a T- shirt that publicly proclaimed, “EFCC I AM HERE”. He was promptly clamped into a dingy dungeon of a detention facility, notwithstanding the fact that he had voluntarily submitted himself. He was humiliated, mocked, taunted, derided and his humanity degraded by Magu and his fierce goons. Little did Magu know, or care to realise, that what goes around comes around.

Last night, Magu was given his usual dolled-out treatment. He was detained at a cold Police cell at the Police Headquarters, Louis Edet House, Abuja.

He was even accosted on the way from his EFCC’s Formella Street office, Abuja, and driven away to Aso Villa, to face the presidential panel probing him on his alleged corruption infractions.

The erstwhile roaring lion could not believe it. The chicken has finally come home to roost. The proud pursuer is now being pursued. The assumed victior has become the victim.

This is a tragic reminder of the urgent need for temporary power wielders to act with moderation, modesty, circumspection and humility. The roaring Emperor is now being turned into the cringing vassal . The mighty iroko tree in the forest that mocks lesser plants is being diminished into a mere dwarf anthill shrub . How the cookies crumble! This shows the transience and ephemerality of raw might and strength!

The vanity and vaingloriousness of the  illusion and delusion of grandeur of power and influence !!!

Fellow country men, please, let us not accord Magu the same shameless media trial , public conviction, lynching and execution of people, who were nothing but mere suspects (and thus presumed innocent), as he did with eclat and swash-buckling. Let us presume him innocent until he has been subjected to the due process of law, through a free and fair public trial, NOT MEDIA TRIAL.

The fact that he did it to others did not and does not mean it was right .Two wrongs can NEVER make a right.

As I argued again and again, like a broken record, the anti- corruption ‘war ‘  was never a regenerative and ethics-defining resurgimento war. It was purely a score -settler against rights activists, the opposition, public critics, plural voices and dissenters. The breeze has finally blown and the smelly backside of the fowl has been exposed.

The following days and weeks will open up new vistas, the Pandora boxes and closed cupboards of decaying skeletons. NIGERIA, WE HAIL THEE.

Ondo Assembly Goes For The Jugular: Suspends Two Members

0

By Ayodele Oni, Akure

In its bid to get the required two third majority to impeach the Deputy Governor, Ondo State House of Assembly, at its plenary on Wednesday, announced the suspension of three of its members.

Those suspended for unruly behaviour, according to the Assembly, are the Deputy Speaker, Hon.Irioju Ogundeji, from Odigbo Constituency-one, Hon Favour Tomomewo from Ilaje constituency-2, and Hon Adewale Williams from Ondo west constituency

However, the House Majority leader, Hon Suleiman Jamiu Maito, one of the anti- impeachment lawmakers, resigned as the house leader.

Leaders of All Progressives Congress, APC, from his constituency had earlier disowned him for backing the state deputy governor, Mr Agboola Ajayi.

The ‘unruly behaviour’ of the lawmakers could not be defined by the house, but seen onlookers as a ploy to discipline them for their stand against the impeachment.

Two of the legislators, Ogundeji and Tomomewo are from the same senatorial districts of the deputy governor.

Eighteen of the 26 members of the assembly will make the constitutional two third majority to impeach the deputy governor.

The deputy governor, through his Media Adviser, Mr Allen Sowore, has written to the state Chief Judge, Justice O. Akeredolu, advising him to be steadfast and shun any attempt to lure him into the Assembly’s impeachment move.

The Chief Judge is expected to constitute a panel to look into allegations against the Deputy Governor and determine his guilt.

“This open letter is coming to you at this auspicious time because of the sacred role you may have to play in the imminent plan by the Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN to remove his Deputy, Alfred Agboola Ajayi by all means possible and at all cost. The government’s position is not hidden; it is already in the public space.

“It’s needless mentioning the level of desperation which Mr Governor has show on this vexatious matter because history already has a place for his hypocritical stance in the law profession being a former President, Nigeria Bar Association (NBA). But Your Lordship, you have a name and integrity to protect.

“If there’s any time the good people of Ondo State need your integrity, it’s now! And the reason is not far-fetched as the Governor has succeeded in compromising his party’s leadership in the state; the legislature. However, we, the people of Ondo State, still hold this believe that the judiciary is the last hope of the common man.

“All discerning minds in Ondo State know today, that the next line of action is that the Governor in his desperation will bring into full force the enomous power and influence of his office to bear on Your Lordship to join in this illegal arrangements to oust the Deputy Governor. He will attempt to force Your Lordship to appoint a panel of seven persons to do the hatchet job.

“Your Lordship, please do not compromise so that history will be kind to you. History, we say, will surely vindicate the just and the wicked will surely be punished”.

Magu: Mixed Reactions Trail The Choice Of Justice Salami As Head Of Panel, As Bode George Says Salami Unfit To Head Panel, Falana Disagree

Ibrahim Magu

By Akinwale Kasali

Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Olabode George, has faulted and condemned the composition of the Presidential panel set up to investigate Ibrahim Magu.

The embattled Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC,  was suspended Tuesday by President Muhammadu Buhari.

George said Justice Ayo Salami, a former President of the Court of Appeal, is unfit to chair the panel based on his antecedents.

George, the Atona Oodua of Yorubaland, also said he will wait for the outcome of the investigation before making a statement on Magu’s travails.

“On the panel set up to investigate Magu, headed by Justice Ayo Salami, I believe he is not fit to head that panel”.

“There are more qualified retired justices with integrity who can be entrusted with that responsibility by the Presidency”

“We know Justice Salami’s antecedents, and I say he who must come to equity must come with clean hands”.

Meanwhile,  Femi Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, has heaped  praises on the Justice Salami led Panel, saying it will surely do Justice and be upright in the outcome of the Panel’s findings.

Covid-19: CAN Spits Fire, Says Closure Of Churches No Longer Justifiable

0

By Akinwale Kasali

The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has criticised the continued closure of Churches and Worship Centres by the Federal and State Governments.

The CAN president, Dr Samson Ayokunle, who kicked against  State Governments closure of Churches said this in a statement by his Special Assistant (Media and Communications), Adebayo Oladeji.

In the statement titled, ‘Reopen all Churches now: Enough is enough,’ Ayokunle said there was no more justification for the closure of worship centres.

The Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 had,  at its press briefing on  June 1, ordered the reopening of worship centres.

It, however, said state governments would take a final decision on the issue and ensure compliance with COVID-19 safety rules.

However, some state governments, including Lagos and Ogun, which have yet to reopen the worship centres, are insisting that it is not yet safe to do so.

But Ayokunle warned that the lockdown of places of worship was no longer acceptable.

He regretted that despite the directive given by the PTF on the reopening of places of worship nationwide,  states such as Lagos and Ogun have yet to allow worship places, especially churches, to be reopened.

The CAN president said, “Despite the directive given by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 with regard to the reopening of places of worship nationwide, some states like Lagos and Ogun have yet to allow worship places. What sin have the places of worship committed?

“With the sudden emergence of the coronavirus pandemic, the leadership of CAN at all levels agreed with the government on the need to close down the places of worship, economy, schools and every other facet of life.

“But with the reopening of the economy, especially the markets, both organised and the unorganised markets,  along with the plan to reopen airports and schools, the closure of churches anywhere in the country is no longer tenable and acceptable.

“In what way are the opened and roadside markets more organised than the church which warranted their opening? Is it not our members in the places of worship that do go to markets? Why are they allowed to go to markets and disallowed from going to places of worship? Is it because the marketers cannot contract the virus in the markets and airports?

“It is our opinion that while the government and other relevant stakeholders are working hard to get a cure for the COVID-19 pandemic, the church too has a role to play by seeking divine solutions as well. CAN appeals to the Lagos, Ogun and other state governments where churches are still under lockdown to relax it for God’s sake.”

The Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Mr Gbenga Omotosho,  said it was illogical to compare markets with worship centres as regards COVID-19 response.

Omotosho, said the decision to close worship centres in Lagos was agreed on by the state government and the religious leaders.

He stated, “With due respect to the Christian Association of Nigeria, that kind of comparison is not logical.  The decision to close worship centres in Lagos was taken by the religious leaders and the state government. The state government presented to them facts and figures about the COVID-19 situation in the state and they saw that it was premature to open worship centres.

“Don’t forget that we are using the curve model in Lagos, and all we are fighting for is to bend the curve. Experts have told us that either July or August that the virus will peak. Any moment from now, the figures will be getting higher.  Why will it be now that we will throw open worship centres?”

However, the Ogun State Government said it consulted the leadership of CAN in the state before taking its decision on the closure of churches.

The state Governor’s spokesman, Remmy Hazzan, who stated this on Tuesday,   advised the CAN  President to consult with the leadership of CAN in Ogun and Lagos states to know the reason for the closure of churches.

Hazzan said,  “We didn’t get to where we are  without interfacing with CAN Ogun State and Lagos State didn’t get  to where they are without interfacing with CAN Lagos State.”

As Ondo Ex SSG Recants, Gov Akeredolu Says He Must Go To Jail

0

By Ayodele Oni

Ondo state Governor, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu, has said that he was not part of any election fraud in 2016 which facilitated his victory in the governorship poll.

Apparently reacting to allegations by his former SSG who claimed that he never won the election, the governor called on security agents and the nation’s electoral umpire to investigate the allegation.

A statement by his Chief Press Secretary,  Mr Segun Ajiboye reads “In a manner not uncharacteristic, the former SSG, shortly after submitting his resignation letter, equally granted a press interview wherein he made some allegations against the Governor.

“A quick run of the allegations shows a semblance of sustained recycling of falsehood as well as blackmail contents targeted at Mr. Governor and his immediate family. These are pernicious lies and imaginary thoughts lines considered perennial and seemingly becoming boring.

”It is, however, imperative to draw the attention of the Nation’s Security Agencies to a particular outburst wherein the former SSG confessed to have participated in electoral fraud in 2016.

“Mr Governor, as an avid believer in Democracy, Rule of Law and Legality, is not a beneficiary of the fraud Hon. Ifedayo Abegunde and his unnamed co-horts allegedly, perpetrated during the 2016 governorship election. He would not encourage such; not even in the coming election.

“Ordinarily, the former SSG’s vituperations which have come under heavy criticisms are assuaging. This is even as the voluntary dispatch of his shortcomings and emotional distress are enough to attract empathy.

“Nevertheless, Abegunde’s outbursts are weighty confessions that must be investigated by security agencies. Anything to the contrary will not only encourage future acts as contained in the confessions. Such brazen anti-democratic acts are unambiguously, grave dangers to our fledgling electoral system.”

The former SSG however in a twist, denied ever saying that the opposition People’s Democratic Party, (PDP) won the 2016 governorship poll in Ondo state.

Addressing newsmen in Akure on Tuesday, Abegunde disclosed that he pleaded with Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu to bring all the aggrieved leaders of the party together, but to no avail saying if the governor had united the party, he wouldn’t have resigned from the cabinet.

According to him, “At this point, moving forward in my political career, I want to announce that I have made up my mind, after consulting with my followers that we are going to pitch our tent with one of the aspirants, who I believe would lift the state up from this mare that it’s currently in. He’s no other person than Dr. Olusegun Abraham.

“I wish to reiterate that at no time did I say that the PDP won the 2016 election. That’s far from the truth. If at all, the APC won with a wide margin so that the PDP thought it fruitless to join issues on it at the court of law.

“However, I only stressed that it was a steady and concerted efforts of our loyal party stalwarts of which I was prominent that won that election.

“You know, we all contested election in 2016. It’s that election that brought the present governor to power.

“I said Governor Akeredolu was not the one that won the election, that we the people won the election for him. That we contributed all our efforts. At the end of the day, he thought it wise, thinking that he owns the government.”

NNPC: Reps Probe Missing $1.5b From NLNG

0

By Tosin Olatokunbo

The House of Representatives has launched a probe into the alleged illegal withdrawal of $1.5 billion from the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas and Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC accounts.

The lawmakers launched the investigations following a motion sponsored by Minority Leader, Nduidi Elumelu on the “need  to investigate illegal withdrawals from the NLNG dividends account by the management of NNPC.”

Dividends from the NLNG are supposed to be paid into the consolidated Revenue Account, owned by states and federal government, to be shared on specified percentages as required by the Constitution.

The House said this was not done in this particular case and has therefore, directed its Committee on Public Accounts to undertake a probe and report back to the House within four weeks.

The committee will, in the course of the investigations, interface with management of NNPC and NLNG to find out how the $1.5 billion transactions were carried out.

Elumelu,  in his motion, insist that it was wrong for the NNPC to withdraw such a huge amount from NLNG, jointly owned by the Federal Government represented by the NNPC,  Shell Gas B.V, Total LNG Nigeria Ltd and Eni International.

The NNPC, he said also disregarded the power of the National Assembly to appropriate funds by tampering with NLNG funds without its knowledge.

What the NNPC did, he said is “extra budgetary spending  as only the Group Managing Director and the Corporation’s chief financial officer had the knowledge of how the $1.05 billion was spent.”

He said the probe is necessary to forestall any plan by NNPC in the future to unilaterally spends government funds with no regards to appropriate authority.

Elumelu said, “the NLNG is jointly owned by the Government of Nigeria ably represented by the NNPC with a shareholding of 49 per cent, shell gas B.V 25.6per cent, Total LNG Nigeria LTD 15 per cent and ENI international 10.4 per cent….the dividends from the NLNG are supposed to be paid into the consolidated revenue funds account of the federal government  and to be shared amongst the three tiers of government.

The NNPC who represents the government of Nigeria on the board of the NLNG had unilaterally without the required consultations with states and the mandatory appropriation from the national assembly illegally tampered with the funds at the NLNG dividends account to the tune of $1.05 billion thereby violating the nation’s appropriation law.”
