2023: Former SGF, Babachir Lawal, Asks Buhari To Stop The North; Says Nobody Should Oppose Tinubu |The Source

0

By Gideon Njoku

In a sharp disagreement with Mamman Daura, President Muhammadu Buhari’s nephew, former Secretary to the Federal Government, (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has asked the President to stop every Northerner in the All Progressives Congress, (APC), from contesting hands for the Presidency in 2023.

Lawal an ally of Buhari, was his first pick as the SGF. But after about two months of a powerful and controversial tenure, he was sacked in a gale of alleged corruption; for which he is under prosecution by the EFCC.

In what must be seen by not a few people as a surprise, Lawal said it would be unfair for the North to make a go at the Presidency again, and asked that it be zoned to the South.

But he has a preference to the Southern part it should be zoned to.

Lawal said he would prefer it be zoned to the the South-west, saying he is disnayed that some Northerners are, again, angling for the Presidency in 2023.

He, also found it ridiculous that anybody would oppose the Presidential ambition of an APC chieftain, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

With Tinubu’s sacrifices,  he said he is suprised anybody would think of stopping him from contesting.

He lays the blame on some Governors, who he also alleges planned the sack of Oshiomhole as the APC National Chairman, because of the former Chairman’s closeness to Tinubu, thus tying Oshiomhole’s sack to Tinubu’s ambition. For emphasis, he invited God’s wrath on anynody who would try to stop Tinubu. He, also accused  the governor’s,allegedly behind Oshiomhole’s fall, of trying to undermine Buhari’s structures.

In an an interview with Sunday Punch, Lawal said: “Those who wanted Adams Oshiomhole out are more desperate because of 2023, because as National Chairman of a party, from my own observation, there’s very little he could do to favour or impose a Presidential candidate in his party.

“Except we want to bring the wrath of God on our heads, because of his role in building the party, equity and a sense of justice demands that he be given a chance in a free and fair system, and let his luck prevail.

“Nobody with a clear conscience in the APC will deny Tinubu the opportunity to contest the Presidency. Nobody within the party had the moral right to even put a stumbling block on his path.

“The party must create an environment that is free and fair for anybody who wants to contest, including Tinubu. Let the delegates who must have emerged through a similarly free and fair process decide who they want to vote for.”

On the Northern quest, again, for the Presidency, Lawal said: ” A just and equitable way of doing things, is to agree as gentlemen, that since the North has had its President for the second tenure, the opportunity should be given to the South to produce the next President.”

Recall that, last week, Mamnan Daura had angered many zones when he called for the abrogation of Rotational Presidency, or what he called ‘turn by turn’ presidency, insisting that the most competent person be elected.

Many groups from other zones outside the North tackled him, saying it was his way of denying other zones the Presidency.

He was also asked if his Uncle, President Buhari,  became the President based on competence.

On Saturday afternoon, the Presidency weighed in on the storm caused by Daura’s outing in the media. Shehu Garba, a Presidential Spokesperson, distanced the Presidency from Daura, saying what he said was his personal opinion, but insisted he was free, and had the right to put forward his  opinion.

An Industrialist and businessman, Engr. Charles Ugwuh, on Saturday, emerged the state Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Ugwuh was elected at the state congress, during which former Governor of Imo State, the Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, stated that the people of the state were traumatised by his removal as the Governor by the Supreme Court.

Ihedioha was removed after seven months in office and was replaced by Senator Hope Uzodinma, of the PDP, thus reducing the PDP to an opposition party in the state. The Imo PDP is yet to recover from the monumental loss.

Also, unanimously, re-elected is the party’s hard-working and cerebral Secretary, Hon. (Nze) Ray Emeana.

Others are: Sir Martin Ejiogu, State Deputy Chairman; Barr. Josiah Eze, State Treasurer; Mrs. Maria Mbakwe, State Women Leader; Nze Law Biaduo; and Chief Godson Nwaobasi, State Auditor; were all re-elected.

He holds a BSc and an MAc in Mechanical Engineering a MSc from the University of Birmingham, London.

He is an industrialist, and owns Rokana Industries – producers and marketer of Jordan toothbrushes, environmental and household cleaning brushes, thermoforming and plastic products and hydro Resources Limited – the makers of Uzzi table waters; both companies.  He is also associated with the popular HungryMan group of restaurants.

Victor Osimhen

By Akinwale Kasali

After months of speculations and negotiations, the Magazine can officially announce that Victor Osimhen will dorn the No 9 jersey for Naples Club Side, Napoli Football Club of Italy in the Italian Serie A in the 2020/2021 soccer season.

The gangling Super Eagles Striker cost the Italian giants €81 Million from French Ligue 1 side, Lille Metropole Football Club on a five year deal.

With the acquisition of Osimhen, he becomes the most expensive Nigeria Footballer ever, toppling the likes of Mikel Obi, Austin Jay Jay Okocha, Jude Odion Ighalo among others.

In a tweet announcing his signing for the Italian Club Side, Osimhen wrote: “The next chapter @Napoli is a very exciting one and I can’t wait to get on the pitch with the team. I want to thank the fans for the past few weeks. I will definitely give my all on the pitch for the common good of the club,” Osimhen tweeted.

Going down memory lane, the former Wolfsburg Football Club of Germany Forward said, “I come from a place where so many dreams have died but I’m the kind of person who don’t give up irrespective of my situation. So, I was forced to go out and get myself a life.

“It wasn’t easy, but I had to do it and that set my path in which I will never give up in life no matter the situation or where I am and that gave me the zeal and momentum no matter what life throws at me,” Osimhen said.

He added, “Growing up in a family where it was hard to get three square meals in a day, I can say that I have seen it all in life; the hardest part was when I was at Wolfsburg. It was really a tough period for me and at some point, I started doubting my abilities.

“I had thought that everything was going to be smooth after my days with the Golden Eaglets but I thank God for the experience I went through at Wolfsburg and it made me realise that life is not that easy as it seems.”

Napoli Football Club can’t hide their joy in signing the promising youngster.

“We are very happy at Osimhen’s arrival,”  Aurelio De Laurentiis, Napoli president, said on Radio Kiss Kiss.

“(Gennaro) Gattuso (Napoli manager) really wanted to sign Osimhen. (Director of sport Cristiano) Giuntoli did a great job because the lad changed his agents during the negotiations.

“We don’t have to expect everything and immediately, even if he doesn’t score 25 or 30 goals, but he should express himself well in this extraordinary team and also make the other Azzurri score.”

“Lille will receive circa €80m, while the player osver the years will get between €4m and €4.5m per season”, Napoli revealed.

Why Ondo Deputy Governor Agboola Ajayi Is At Crossroads; Fate Hanging |The Source

Agboola Ajayi

By Ayodele Oni, Akure

This seems not to be the best of times for the embattled Deputy Governor of Ondo state, Mr Agboola Ajayi, as he is yet to decide his next line of action after losing the governorship ticket of the People’s Democratic Party, (PDP).

Within the last few days, he has visited Niger state Governor Abubakar Bello, who is chairman of All Progressives Congress, (APC) Reconciliation Committee, and former governor of Ondo state, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, a Chieftain of Zenith Labour Party, (ZLP) among other political leaders.

Details of what was described as consultation were not made public, but report has it that Ajayi has picked the governorship ticket of ZLP.

However, a twist was added at the weekend in another statement by the director of publicity of PDP, Mr Zadok Akintoye, who said Ajayi is still in PDP.

In the statement, Akintoye said: “We take note of the information being promoted and spread across social media platforms that HE. Barr. Agboola Ajayi, the incumbent Deputy Governor and Member of the PDP has concluded plans to join the Zenith Labour Party.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Mr. Agboola Ajayi remains a member of the PDP, and has not informed the party of his intention to leave, and remains a well valued and respected member of the party.

“Please note that clarification on the allegation has been sought from the Deputy Governor and assurances given to the leadership of the party of his intention to stay in the PDP.

“We therefore implore all members of the party and the general public to disregard the information as the deputy governor has assured the party leaders and elders (on his honor) of not leaving.

“Our efforts at winning the next election remains ongoing and we are committed to removing the incumbent governor through a free and fair election.”

It was learnt that Ajayi has been meeting a brick wall in his attempt to pick the ticket of a political party to enable him contest against his boss, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu in October 10.

With the display of names of governorship candidates and their running mates in the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC), the chances of the deputy governor may be hanging, thus the need for clarification on his present status.

Political parties still have the opportunity to replace any of the names, according to INEC time table for the election.

Insecurity: Northern Governors, NASS Call On President Buhari To Sack Service Chiefs |The Source

Buhari and Service Chiefs

By Akinwale Kasali

Governors from the Northern Region has joined the league of those asking President Muhammadu Buhari to remove his Service Chiefs office.

Before now, a couple of them had individually called for a change in the leadership of the military. But the brazen attack on the convoy of one of them, Borno state Governor, Dr. Babagana Zulum, has forced a collective call for The sack of the Service Chiefs.

Its forum – The Northern Governors Forum condemned last Wednesday’s attack on Zulum’s convoy,   describing the act as callous and reprehensible.

The attack but home, and forced them to admit the truth that the  state of insecurity in the Nigeria has escalated to an almost uncontrollable level.

The Chairman of the Forum, and Governor of Plateau, Simon Lalong, conveyed the feelings of the Governors in a statement by his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Dr Makut Macham.

He said the attack on the Zulum’s convoy on his way to Baga in Kukawa Local Government Area of the state was an act to frustrate his efforts in ensuring the well-being of the vulnerable in the state.

The governor expressed concern that Zulum was attacked while on the way to distribute palliatives to Internally Displaced Persons for the Sallah celebration.

Also, the Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives has expressed concern over the attack on Governor Zulum by insurgents, saying that the sad incident has again reinforced the urgent need to review the nation’s security architecture.

Ndudi Elumelu, Minority Leader in a statement on Friday, urged the President to implement the recent resolution of both chambers of the National Assembly asking President Muhammadu Buhari to sack his Service Chiefs.

Lalong said the incident was a desperate attempt by criminal elements to sabotage Zulum’s efforts toward reducing the sufferings of IDPs who had been traumatised by terrorists.

“This regrettable attack shows the desperation by enemies of peace and humanity at large to jeopardise all efforts towards making life easier for victims of violence in the state over the years.

“The Northern Governors Forum strongly condemns this attack and stands with Gov. Zulum who has demonstrated courage in personally reaching out to people in need despite the dangers.

“We urge him not to be deterred as he keeps working with security agencies to protect the lives and property of the people,” he said.

Elumelu, in the statement also noted that the attack on the state governor and other dastardly activities of the insurgents in various parts of the nation have further reinforced the urgent need to inject new hands with fresh ideas to handle the nation’s security architecture.

His words: “The worsening security situation in the country under the current Service Chiefs has reached an unbearable state to the extent that insurgents have the temerity to attack an armed convoy of a state governor.

“This is more so with the insistence by Governor Zulum of compromising of security system in the area, allegedly creating opening to the attack; a position that validates the call for immediate reorganising of the nation’s security architecture.

“The entire nation is distressed by the incessant mindless killing of our citizens and pillaging of defenseless communities by insurgents, bandits and kidnappers, which have brought indescribable agony, anguish and torment to innocent Nigerians.

“We, the opposition lawmakers hereby in the strongest terms, restate the call to President Muhammadu Buhari to honor the resolution of the National Assembly and immediately remove the Service Chiefs and bring in new hands to effectively confront the security challenges confronting our nation.”

Even though the President has expressed reservations, at least two  times, on the performance of the Service Chiefs, and condemned the attack on Zulum, he is not likely to remove them soon.

Buhari’s Service Chiefs are the longest Service Chiefs in Nigeria. He has extended their tenures three times, atimes, to a subtle murmur within the Military.

The opinion by most people is that they have become war-weary and bereft of new ideas to tackle the insurgents.

Recently, the Senate passed a resolution asking Buhari to remove the Service Chiefs from office, but it attracted a rebuke from the Presidency, reminding the Lawmakers that they were crossing the redline.”It is the President’s prerogative to appoint or sack them. He should not be pushed”, the response from Presidential Spokesperson, Femi Adesina, hinted.

Ondo Guber: Desperate Akeredolu Begs Tinubu For Help |The Source

By Tosin Olatokunbo

Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu is very desperate in making new friends who can help him win the October 10 governorship election in the Sunshine state.

In his quest to survive the tsunami of opposition against his re-election into the Alagbaka Government House, the Ondo helmsman, on Friday met with Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu a former Lagos Governor and APC National Leader, in his Bourdillon Home.

Governor Akeredolu’s relationship with Tinubu has not been very rosy as he was fingered among the APC governors that forged the ouster of Adams Oshiomhole, a close ally of Tinubu as the party’s National Chairman, which many supporters of the ex-Lagos governor said has caused a serious setback for his 2023 presidential ambition.

The details of their meeting, though not made known to the media, close watchers of the state politics say, Akeredolu met with the APC strongman to seek his forgiveness and beg him to support his re-election after emerging the party’s governorship candidate on July 21.

The Ondo helmsman had struggled to emerge the APC flagbearer, yet the opposition against him remains strong as ever, according to analysts watching his political trajectory.

Recall that the Deputy Governor of the state,  Agboola Ajayi left the APC, the party they both rode on to power and joined the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Some APC stalwarts, including Olusola Oke and other members of Unity Forum, have also vowed to stop the Owo born politician and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN from returning to the government house for another four years.

But speaking after meeting Tinubu Governor Akeredolu disclosed that meeting was meant to foster unity in Ondo APC.

The governor who said he cannot win the election without the help of other APC members in the state, said he believed Tinubu could help broker peace among aggrieved APC members in the state.

“Today, I visited our leader, Asiwaju Tinubu, and my brother, Jide Sanwo-Olu, to formally introduce my running mate and consult with them on the forthcoming governorship election in Ondo State. We are one in APC and our party is stronger than ever,” Akeredolu said.

Meanwhile, sources in Bourdillon informed the magazine that Tinubu has agreed to foster peace in the state APC, and has directed his supporters to work with Akeredolu to win the October 10 governorship election.

“His case is like the prodigal son that came back home. Asiwaju will always welcome everybody with open arms whenever they decide to forget their treachery and join the progressives train. Akeredolu is not the first and will surely not be the last,” A source close to the APC Leader told the magazine on Saturday.

Customers in tweets monitored by this Magazine lamented  what they termed outrageous and unstable network on the eve of the 2020 Eid-el-Kabir and described GLO as ‘the most useless service provider on earth.”

Despite its infrastructure investment claims, subscribers appear persistently dissatisfied with its persistent poor services.

How A Passenger Died Aboard An Air Peace Flight |The Source

By Adesina Soyooye

Fresh from re-starting its operations after months of lockdown, no thanks to COVID-19, an airline, Air Peace, recorded a death aboard one of its flights on Friday.

A 72-year old man died on the flight heading to Abuja from Calabar.

According to reports, the deceased was said to have been sick, since 2019, allegedly suffering from paraplegia. Paraplegia is a spinal chord injury which paralyses the lower limb. He was on his way to Abuja for a check up.

When he arrived the Margaret Ekpo International Airport, Calabar, accompanied by one of his daughters, as demanded by protocol, he was certified fit to travel by Port Health Officals.

But on arrival at the local wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, he was found to be unresponsive, having experienced some crisis in-flight.

That was when Port Health officials were invited to board the aircraft and check.

He was declared to have lost every pulse, meaning that he had passed-on.

His body was thereafter evacuated from the aircraft, while investigation will be carried out to confirm, actually, how feat he was to embark on the journey.

It is usually a big deal when a passenger dies aboard an aircraft.

Both the Airline and the Pilot could be penalised if any negligence is established on their part.

Stanley Olise, Spokesperson for Air Peace confirmed the incident, but insisted that the deceased was certified fit to travel by Port Health officials, and had indicated no signs of serious illness before the aircraft took off.

Olise: “The passenger was certified fit to fly by Port Health officials, but developed a medical condition in-flight.

“On arrival at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport, Abuja, we urgently notified the Port Health officials, who confirmed the death, and took the remains of the passenger to the hospital for necessary protocols.”

This magazine was not able to confirm if the deceased travelled with his daughter who was with him at the Calabar airport, but Air Peace says it has decontaminated the aircraft.

Breaking: Shock As Governor Obaseki’s Family Endorses Ize- Iyamu |The Source

0

By Akinwale Kasali

Shock was what registered on the faces of many people when some members of family of the incumbent Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki ,of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, lined behind his opponent, the All Progressives Congress, APC, Governorship Candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu at the expense of their blood relation.

Some prominent members of the large Obaseki family, openly endorsed Ize-Iyamu on Saturday, 1st August 2020, in a meeting at the APC’s candidate’s private residence in Benin.

Victor Obaseki, a cousin to Governor Obaseki, speaking at the meeting, admitted that although Godwin Obaseki is a family member and a kin, he won’t be getting the support of the family.

He said: “I am here today in the company of my cousins to support Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki, the executive governor, is our cousin.

“Generally, The Obasekis have their own way of doing things; we are a different branch of faith, we are supporting our brother, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu with unalloyed support fully for him.

“I have supported him before, and I would continue to support him. We would do all our campaigns for him without let or hindrance, fully from the bottom of our hearts.”

Appreciating the Obasekis, Ize-Iyamu expressed his delight at the support of the Obaseki family, stressing that this serves as a confirmation of the poor administration that Governor Obaseki has given to Edo state in the past four years.

In his words: “Let me thank you for the endorsement. I have known some of you for many years and I am very happy that politics has not strained our relationship.

“It is true, as Osaro said, that far away in New York, I had the opportunity of meeting with him and other Edolites, where I shared my ambition.

Osaro has been a good gentleman and humble man, and has always declared his support for me, and it basically shows that they are tired of Governor Obaseki’s administration, thereby advocating for change and Progressive government that will be people and purposefully driven”.
