Naming Agbor Railway Station After President Jonathan |The Source

0
Buhari naming train stations

By Chief Emeka Asinugo, KSC

Ever so distinguished from the South-South Governors’ Forum, the Pan-Niger Delta Forum, PANDEF has often been widely touted as the oracle of Nigeria’s South-South Zone. To that extent, the organization has in its own right become very important not only to the Niger Delta Region but also to the entire country.

So, it wasn’t much of a shock to observers of Nigeria’s socio-political development when in anger, it literarily descended on the Buhari administration recently. The organization described the Buhari administration naming Agbor Railway Station after former President Goodluck Jonathan as meaningless and belittling to the person and stature of the former President. And many, many Nigerians agreed with that assertion.

A statement credited to Hon. Ken Robinson, National Publicity Secretary of PANDEF said it was even worse that after the so-called honour by the Buhari administration, the government went ahead to name several other stations after so many other Nigerians.

The organization went on to emphasize that though all the other railway stations were named after prominent and deserving Nigerians, if the gesture was truly an honour done to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, there would have been no reason to name several other stations after numerous other Nigerians. President Jonathan should have been distinguished for who he is, and for what he means to Nigerians and to the world.

The statement said it was improper, incongruous and completely unacceptable that one of several railway stations in the country would be named after former President Jonathan. Moreover, there was no other former Head of State or President that a railway station was named after, which glaringly made the so-called recognition a mockery.

PANDEF rightfully demanded the immediate reversal of the naming of the railway station after former President Goodluck Jonathan and suggested that instead, a befitting national infrastructure be named after him. If indeed President Buhari sincerely wanted to honour former President Jonathan in terms of naming an infrastructure after him, it should be something befitting his status as an ex-President. For instance, what could possibly be wrong with the democratically elected pioneer President of Nigeria from the South-South geopolitical zone having the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, Rivers State, named after him? That would fall in line with the level of recognition given to similar levels of government Chief Executives.

Lagos international airport was named after a former military head of state, Murtala Muhammed. Enugu international airport was named after a former governor of Eastern Nigeria, Dr. Akanu Ibiam. Imo airport was named after a former governor of old Imo state, Chief Sam Mbakwe. How then could President Buhari have thought it expedient to name a mere train station after ex-President Jonathan? That gesture, many Nigerians saw not only as derogatory but as a direct insult on the stature of the former President. And so, PANDEF called on the former President to reject the dishonourable gesture.

Ex-President Jonathan, more than those who occupied Aso Rock before him, deserves to be celebrated by the people of Nigeria for many reasons. And no gesture should be considered too special in doing so because he deserves the best. Jonathan struck publicly as a man who clearly knew where he was leading his country to, and what he was doing with the fate and fortune of his people.  And that was very important.

He came across simply as a man who was committed to do his best to make his country a better place for both citizens and foreign residents. He also came across as a man who knew from his experience as a university teacher that it was not going to be easy to please every Nigerian all the time. Yet he worked assiduously and to the best of his ability to make his countrymen and women happy people. He, more than any other President before him committed his entire efforts into entrenching a solid foundation in the country’s arduous march towards true democracy.

In all the 60 years since Nigeria had self rule, no other President had the same level of comportment in bearing the name-calling, insults and derogatory languages about him as Dr. Jonathan did with his fellow Nigerians.

Despite what they now know under the Buhari administration that they had falsely accused him of doing or not doing whatever it was, he felt at home with them as their President. His high office often humbled him. Any other President before or even after him would have hounded those he saw as his detractors into prison and some of them would have died there while in detention. Not Jonathan.

Jonathan often said that he did not want to run after every Nigerian who hurled an insult on him because such a move would only corrode the foundation of democracy that he was laying for the country. He often defended himself when he was likely to hurt the ego of law enforcement agencies and insisted he did not want them parading fellow Nigerians on the television unless their cases had gone to court and they had been convicted as criminals. He did not want Nigerian citizens paraded as suspects because parading then before they were convicted would tantamount compromising their human rights.

In one interview in Nigeria, President Jonathan was asked if he thought there were national issues he handled imperfectly as President. He said yes. He was open to his conscience. He was frank to the nation. He spoke of his handling of the Boko Haram insurgency. He confessed that his administration had underestimated the strength and level of commitment of the enemy. Possibly, the fact was that he was not well briefed at the time, which could have been why he told Nigerians that Boko Haram had penetrated into even his government.

Jonathan was fully aware that what actually brought his government down with both Nigerians and foreign observers was the issue of Boko Haram. Although the threat of terrorism was a global issue, many Nigerians believed that the Jonathan administration did not handle the Boko Haram insurgency the way it was supposed to be handled. But even as a military general and a northerner, has Buhari handled the Boko Haram issue any better? How many times, in comparison, did the National Assembly convene to request that Jonathan sack his Service Chiefs, alleging they were incompetent? Not once.

When Jonathan was Vice-President, his avowed commitment was to stabilize the country by conducting free and fair elections. That was his keen interest. Indeed, the country stabilized and conducted elections which both Nigerians and foreign observers agreed were the best so far in the political history of the country. Jonathan felt that a large part of his initial plans for Nigeria had been achieved, and that his second tenure administration would focus on other issues. But that second tenure never came. And recently Buhari signed a bill into law which prohibited a second tenure for any President who completed the tenure of his principal.

Despite all those challenges that faced him, it would probably be right to assert that it was ex-President Jonathan who laid the proper foundation for democracy to thrive in Nigeria. Talk of free and fair elections. Even by congratulating Buhari before the results of the elections were announced by the Independent Electoral Commission, he not only saved several lives of young-adult Nigerians that would have been murdered in the sort of post election violence that usually marked elections in Nigeria, he also told the world that his ambition to stay in office was not equal to a single drop of the blood of a Nigerian citizen – thus sending the message across to Nigerians and to the world that politics in the country should no longer be regarded as a do or die affair.

In an attempt to bridge the yawning educational gap between the north and the south, Jonathan built very many Almajiri schools in the north. He was bent on taking young northern children away from street life and crime to a safer environment where education would mould their character and make them more useful to themselves and their society. He built six more federal universities in the north, all within his one tenure of leadership.

After so many decades of neglect, it was Jonathan who put back train services on the social map of Nigeria. APC inherited that vision from him. It was Jonathan who signed the freedom of information into law, thus making it possible for Nigerians to hold public officers accountable for how public funds were dispensed with under their watch.

Considering all these and more legacies Dr. Jonathan bequeathed the country, the recent call on President Buhari to rescind the naming of the railway station after ex-President Jonathan is perhaps the clearest indication that those who live in glass houses should endevour not to throw stones.

Jonathan was inadvertently being smuggled by President Buhari into the “Class of 1966” and into the Cult of the “Horse Riders” of Nigeria. Those fellows always had a culture of vendetta and a culture of challenging each other. Call them the gallant men of Nigeria if you like. I think that is how they see themselves. And their stake: chivalry, fame, money and vendetta. It’s all part of being a state actor.

Jonathan and his admirers should not sleep over that understanding. There are only three Presidents who are still alive since Nigeria regained democratic rule in 1999 – Obasanjo, Buhari and Jonathan. And I think I should analyze this trend a little bit more.

When Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, a southern Nigerian did a stint as a military head of state and two terms as civilian head of state, the northern oligarchy immediately saw it as a challenge that must be countered. No other Number One citizen attained that height before Obasanjo. And the north won’t let the south get away with the “superiority complex”.

So, Buhari, a northern Nigerian, came forward to be counted. He had been a military head of state and now he is doing his second term, to square up with Obasanjo’s tenures. But like people who know him closely and those who have had course to study him and his life’s journey say, Obasanjo is a man endowed with native sense, just like Buhari is also.

Obasanjo was born on 5 March 1937 and is currently 83 years old. Buhari was born on 17 December 1942 and is presently 78 years old and obviously a younger man than Obasanjo. Both lost their fathers when they were young and had to be brought up under the eagle-eyed supervision of their mothers. Jonathan was born on 20 November 1957 and is currently 63 years old and also a younger man than Buhari. Together they now complete the post 1999 presidential triumvirate.

Obasanjo saw that Buhari was “coming up”. He observed that Buhari was determined to do a second tenure in other to catch up with him. What did he do next?  He enrolled in the Open University for a PhD. He was 82 years old when he bagged his PhD. And that was the challenge Buhari, his rival was to face at the expiration of his second tenure as a democratically elected President. Trust me if I told you that this was the main reason why Obasanjo got back to university at the age he did. He would like to know how far his military-cum-political rival would go in meeting his challenge.

God did not create all fingers equal but man seems to think it is possible for all fingers to be equal. It was then left for Buhari at his age go back to the University to read for his own PhD. Who knows if he would accept the challenge and do so since it is part of the culture of being the Number One citizen?  It was a typical challenge from a fellow horse rider and fellow member of the Class of 1966. Even Jack Gowon went back to school after being Nigeria’s military head of state for very many years and he knows all this, even though he considers himself as superior as Emeka Ojukwu in their army days. It will indeed be interesting to see how Buhari would react to this challenge from an elderly colleague.

Meanwhile, it very much looks like he has made his plans. He must not lose track. There are only three Presidents since Nigeria came back to democratic rule in 1999. So, Buhari must apply his native sense to fall Jonathan, his younger colleague, in line. And to do so, there must be a diplomatic way to bring him down. A railway station could be named after him, possibly to humiliate him. It would not be desirable to name another station after any other Nigerian President dead or alive. Only Jonathan!

In such a way, Buhari might be able to summon the courage he would need to read for his own PhD after his tenure. He must prove to the world that what one strong man can do another strong man also can. But it is beginning to look like for once, perhaps, Buhari’s plan will not work. It could even backfire if that inferior honour on Jonathan who had a PhD before Obasanjo was not rescinded with the expediency it deserved. Understanding the politics of Nigeria’s No. 1 citizens can be intriguing and very interesting at the same time. But just as PANDEF demanded, President Buhari’s best bet would be to rescind the naming of that Agbor Train Station after President Jonathan.

Edo: “In Ize-Iyamu’s Shoes, I Would Have Sued Oshimhole; Why I am suing ThisDay – Wike |The Source

0

By Adesina Soyoye

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, finds it bewildering that the All Progressives Congress’ Governorship candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, did not sue the former National Chairman of the Party, Adams Oshiomhole.

He said by keeping quiet, and  allowing Oshiomhole to lead his campaign and completely take it over, Ize-Iyamu has, almost, endorsed what wete said about him in 2016. “Look at the campaign. Ize-Iyamu is not complaining. Only Oshiomhole is campaigning, as if he is the candidate. It is just to let Ize-Iyamu feel that in case you win, it is because of me”

In 2016 when Ize-Iyamu was the candidate of the PDP, Oshiomhole had made many scandalous allegations against him, allegations that would ordinarily push one into losing self-esteem.

Wike’s bewilderment is that the same Oshiomhole is campaigning for Ize-Iyamu, without publicly apologising to him. And he wonders how Oshiomhole feels, standing side by side with Ize-Iyamu, and campaigning.

Wike who was speaking on a Channel’s Television interview reeled out all the names Oshiomhole called Ize-Iyamu – a cultist who poured acid on the manhood of a fellow student and was rusticated by the University of Benin, thus reducing the student to eunuch, a fake Pastor, a school drop-out,  one who should not be trusted with a Kobo, and more.

He asked: what changed, emphasing, that instead of apologising to the man, he is apologising for supporting Governor Godwin Obaseki in 2016.

He also reeled out all the good things the same Oshiomhole said about Obaseki, including wanting, in appreciation, to rename a building in Government House after Obaseki.

Wike said that by not suing, Ize-Iyamu was endorsing what Oshiomhole said. Oshiomhole said it was politics, but Wike said it went beyond that; that it was a personal attack; meaning that everything the former Chairman is saying now is also politics, and should not be believed.

He said, when somebody deliberately libels you, and wants to destroy you, the best thing is to sue.

He added” That is why I am suing ThisDay. I am suing them.

His anger with the paper, he said, stems from a headline it cast as its lead story.

Obaseki, on defection, from the APC to the PDP, after he was denied the APC Governorship ticket, had visited Wike, to consult with on the way forward. The next day, ThisDay published a lead front page story, entitled “With A Friend Like Wike, Obaseki Needs No Enemy

Wike said the headline sought to destroy his character, and integrity, and had libelled him.

NDDC Scandal: After The Disgrace Of Nigeria In London, Buhari Orders Payment Of Students |The Source

NDDC Scholars

By Akinwale Kasali

It took the disgrace of Nigeria in London, by protesting students on scholarship on the bill of the scandal-ridden Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, for the President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, to react to the shame the NDDC the leadership of the NDDC exposed the country to.

For weeks, the students, in the scholarship bill of the Commission, have been crying over their abandonment. Their fees remain unpaid. Their allowances too. They have been reduced to beggars, with many of them doing extremely menial jobs and sleeping at Railway Stations. They appealed.  They called on their President, the country, everybody. They were ignored. The only lonely voice in the wilderness was Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chief Executive Officer of the Commission in charge of Nigerians in the Diaspora. Her appeals were in vain.

Everybody ignored them while the NDDC officials fed fat, recklessly spending hundreds of billions of Naira on selves.

But on Monday, the hungry, angry and frustrated students had had enough.  They took to the streets, and protested what they have been reduced to in front of the Nigeria High Commission, in London.

That was when Mr President took notice.

Disturbed by the protest,  President Buhari has now ordered the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio and the NDDC,  to immediately pay the School fees and stipends of the Scholarship Students.

The order came barely 24 hours after the public protest by the abandoned students.

This was contained in a statement titled NDDC invites President Buhari to Commission Signature Project and signed by the NDDC Director, Corporate Affairs, Charles Odili, on Tuesday.

Odili said Buhari conveyed the directive on the fate of the students, to the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio.

The statement quoted Odili as saying, “Under the Commission’s finance protocol, only the Executive Director (Finance) and the Executive Director (Projects) can sign for the release of funds from the Commission’s domiciliary accounts with the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN.

“With the death of Chief Etang, the remittance had to await the appointment of a new EDFA. Senator Akpabio, the Honourable Minister, said President Buhari who has been briefed on the protest by students at the Nigerian High Commission in London, has ordered that all stops be pulled to pay the students by the end of this week. We expect a new EDFA to be appointed this week. As soon as that is done, they would all be paid.”

The scholarship beneficiaries said the NDDC had stopped paying their tuition and upkeep allowances for months.

The protest, which held in London, was posted on the protesting scholars’ Twitter handle, @2019Nddc.

They also complained that they risked being deported from the United Kingdom where they are schooling.

They lamented that their school fees and maintenance funds had not been paid one year after they were awarded scholarships. Etang died just a couple of months ago.

During the protest, the aggrieved scholars displayed placards with various inscriptions.

Some of the inscriptions read ‘NDDC has failed us’, ‘we have been thrown out of school’, ‘we risk deportation’, ‘must we protest to get paid, and ‘scholarship not suffership’.

While some of the protesters were seen sitting on the floor, others held the placards standing.

In a video of the protest shared online, the protesters insisted on speaking with the President Muhammadu Buhari or the Minister of the NDDC, Godswill Akpabio.

Unbelievable: Reason Why 50 Policemen Went To Arrest Joi Nunieh, former NDDC MD – Wike |The Source

By Adesina Soyooye

The reason why the Nigeria Police invaded the home of former Acting Managing Director of the Interim Management Committee of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, Barr Joi Nunieh, would shock many people.

In the heat of the probe, by an Ad Hoc Committee of the House of Representatives, of the  contract scandal at the Commission, Nunieh had made damning revelations against the Minister for  Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio. Akpabio had sacked Nunieh as the M.D. a some months earlier.

A couple of days later, after Akpabio replied Nunieh, saying she was sacked because she was not qualified for the job, having not participated in the mandatory National Youth Service, even when she was mobilised to Kwara State from Law School, dozens of Policemen invaded Ms. Nunieh’s home in Port Hacourt, at an uncivilized time – 4.00am – to arrest him. She contacted Governor Wike, who rushed to her house and rescued her from the Policemen who had no Warrant Of Arrest. Wike took her to the Government House, away from the reach of the Police.

Nunieh was billed to travel to Abuja that morning to testify before the House Committee. The invasion prevented her from doing so.

Joi Nuneih

Nobody knew why the Police went after her, but everybody felt it had to do with the NDDC Probe. Some said they wanted to stop her from making more damning revelations.

But according to Wike, the Police told him they invaded Nunieh’s home over her NYSC certificate.

For the records, this was the same offence former Minister for Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun, committed, and was harrassed by nobody.

Instead, she boarded the next British Airways aircraft, after she quit from office, and headed for Britain to join her family.

Wike made this revelation while speaking on a Channel’s Television interview programme, Tuesday morning. What irks Wike most is not even the differential treatment meter out to Nunieh when compared to that given to Adeosun. Two things irk him most.

One, that about 50 Policemen were deployed to arrest a woman at 4.00am, instead of inviting her over to their office in writing.

And, two: that the Commissioner of Police, Rivers State Command, would brazenly lie to him, and deceive the nation by telling two different stories within a space of one hour.

According to Wike, he invited the CP who told him that he was not aware of the operation  at Nunieh’s. But to his disbelief, within an hour, the CP called him, and now said he knew about it, and that it was over a petition concerning her NYSC certificate.

Wike then asked how anybody would trust a CP who, within a space of an hour, changed his story line two times. “I can’t deal with such people”, he said.

Recall that a day after Wike rescued Nunieh, both the Rivers Police Command,  and the CP denied saying they were ignorant of the operation at Ms. Nunieh’s,  with the CP asking Wike to hand over Nunieh to him.

Wike never did, and nothing has been heard of the case till date. But many people, including the revered Oba of  Benin, have praised and thanked Wike for his heroic act in rescuing Nunieh.

Meanwhile, the contract scandal at the NDDC, gets worse with every new day.

2023: Why PDP May lgnore Rotational Presidency – Wike |The Source

0

By Adesina Soyooye

This may make some zones uncomfortable.

But in 2023, the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, may jettison the rotational Presidency, or Zoning.

The rotational Presidency is a gentleman’s agreement which says that the Presidency should rotate between the North and Southern parts of Nigeria.

Many people expect that the Presidency would shift to the South, in 2023, after President Buhari’s second term in office, Meaning that they expect the two biggest political parties in the country (for now),  –  the APC and the PDP  – to pick their presidential candidates from the South.

But that may not be the case in the PDP, the main opposition party, if the analysis by the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, is anything to go by.

In an interview with Channels Television, Tuesday morning,  Wike, obviously, the strongest voice in the PDP, said that the zoning of the presidency is a luxury only a ruling party can afford. An opposition party, he emphasised, may not be able to afford the luxury of zoning, as its main focus will be on a winning candidate.

Using himself as an example, he said  he was picked as the governorship candidate of the PDP, to battle the then Governor, Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi’s candidate, Dr Dakuku Peterside, even though he, Woke, is of the same zone with Amaechi, because the PDP was looking for a winning candidate.

On his opinion on zoning at the National level, he said: “As an opposition party, we look at all variables. What will make us win the election comes first. The ruling party can say zoning, but for the opposition party, there are variables.

“It depends. As an opposition party, we look at all variables. Forget about other parties. We look at all variables, and our own concern is, how do we win, how do we get back to power?

“So, it is not one factor that will influence decisions, many variables come into play. So it will be wrong for me, as an opposition person to say this must be done now.”

Wike seems to, partially, agree with both Mamman Daura, Buhari’s nephew, and Olisa Agbakoba, SAN, both of whom, recently, said that competence should be the watch-word in the choice of who becomes the president, not zoning, or, as Daura put it, “turn by turn.”

Their opinion is in sharp contrast with many groups – Afenifere, Ohanaeze, PANDEF, and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, David Babachir Lawal, and many others who insist it would be unfair and immoral to deny the South the Presidency in 2023.

Malami Backs Amaechi, Defends Chinese Loans |The Source

By Ola Samuel

The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, has allayed the fears of many Nigerians over some Chinese loans, believed to have obtained with Nigeria’s sovereignty compromised.

The National Assembly who has been probing the Muhammadu Buhari administration on the details of the country’s loan deals with the communist country.

One of the preconditions for the Chinese loans said “the borrower (Nigeria) hereby irrevocably waives any immunity on the grounds of a sovereign or otherwise for itself or its property in connection with any arbitration proceeding pursuant to Article 8(5), thereof with the enforcement of any arbitral award pursuant thereto, except for the military assets and diplomatic assets”.

But Malami told Thisday newspapers in an interview that President Buhari will “guard Nigeria’s sovereignty and its territorial independence”.

According to the minister “The point of note, as per waiver of immunity is concerned, is the fact that it could either be an immunity of sovereignty of a nation or in the alternative waiver of sovereignty as it relates to a contractual obligation, which in effect entitled a party to the contract to have their contractual right enforced on the assets of a sovereign state simpliciter (sic), without affecting the sovereignty of a nation in its own right.’’

He said the loans were not obtained without the National Assembly approval, adding that all loan deal had been well scrutinized.

He said “As you might be aware, relevant ministries and agencies will make presentations and receive inputs at national assembly sessions in order to deliberate on the matter,” he said.

Contentious issues will not only be addressed, but other implications will be analysed with a view to making informed decisions in the best interest of the country and for the betterment of Nigerians.”

Recall that the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi had, last week warned the National Assembly about the probe, which he said will discourage the Chinese government from approving more loans for the country and set back the ongoing infrastructure drive by the government.

Meanwhile, some analysts insist that Chinese loans are riddled with corruption which tend to enrich officials from both sides, unlike loans from Europe and America.

Eyitayo Jegede’s Belated Visit to Former Governor Olusegun Mimiko |The Source

Eyitayo Jegede

By Ayodele Oni, Akure

The political godfatherism in the politics of Ondo state is building up as virtually all major contenders in the October 10 governorship election have turned Ondo city to a Mecca of sort

Their mission there is to consult and seek support of the immediate past governor of the state, Dr Olusegun Mimiko for their ambition.

The former governor, became the number one citizen on the ticket of Labour Party, (LP) which he later dumped for the People’s Democratic Party, (PDP) and upon his exit from government returned to LP which he re christened Zenith Labour Party, (ZLP).

The latest August visitor to Mimiko is the candidate of the PDP, Mr Eyitayo Jegede, who was his Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice during his eight years of his governance.

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu and his deputy, Mr Agboola Ajayi had in separate times paid homage to the country home of the ex- governor.

However, political observers in the state are of the view that with ZLP, Mimiko’s new party formalising arrangements to give the governorship ticket to the estranged Deputy Governor of the state, Mr Agboola Ajayi, the door may have been shut against other candidates.

But, again they are quick to point to the existing cordial relationship between Mimiko and the incumbent Governor Rotimi Akeredolu which dated back to their University days.

Only last week, Governor Akeredolu made it clear that he would never be a party to an alleged investigation of the former governor by the anti graft agency.

According to the analysts, for now, it is only the medical doctor turned politician that can actually determine his annoited candidate for the governorship poll.

Meanwhile, the ZLP is preparing to officially receive the Depity Governor before the end of this week despite claim by the PDP that he is still a member of the party.

Opinion, however, is that Ajayi would be cutting his nose to spite his face if he decamps again from the APC to the ZLP.

Said an associate of Ajayi who pleaded anonymity: “He should not turn himself into a rolling stone. Within a month, he has moved from APC to PDP, and now, we hear of ZLP, a party which will never win the governorship election in Edo State. If he does that, he will be seen as  desperate.”

Disquiet As Air Peace Explains Sack Of Pilots, Downsizing |The Source

By Uche Mbah

The Management of Air Peace has explained why it sacked some Pilots and support staff. It attributed the decision to the devastating effect of COVID-19.

The airline had been the airline of choice in the airlifting of returnees from the diaspora, and the ferrying of important cargo connected with the COVID 19 Pandemic.

In a statement Monday in Lagos, the airline cited the greater good of the company and its almost three thousand work-force as reason, insisting they needed to downsize for optimum performance. It described the decision as painful but rightful.

“This decision was taken for the greater good of the company and its almost three thousand work-force, the affected pilots inclusive”, the statement said.

“The airline cannot afford to toe the path of being unable to continue to fulfill its financial obligations to its staff, external vendors, aviation agencies, maintenance organizations, insurance companies, banks and other creditors.

Hence, the decision to restructure its entire operations with a view to surviving the times.

“The pandemic has hit every airline worldwide, so badly that it has become very impossible for airlines to remain afloat without carrying out the internal restructuring of their costs.

“Anything short of what we have done may lead to the the collapse of an airline as could be seen in some places worldwide during this period.

“Therefore, we decided to review the salaries being paid to all staff. The new salaries reflect a 0-40 percent cut of the former salary depending on the salary grades of every staff.

“Even after the cuts, it was obvious that for us to be able to sustain our operations and survive the times, some jobs must inevitably have to go,” the statement said.

The management said that Air Peace had never, for one day, ever owed salaries to its workers in its almost six years of existence, pilots inclusive.

It said rather the management of Air Peace had always been known to be increasing the salaries of its employees periodically without being prompted by staff.

“In fact, in one fell swoop, Air Peace increased the salaries of pilots by over 100 percent in one day!

“Our salaries have always been paid even before the end of the month in the last five years.

“So, we love all our staff. This decision is inevitable under the circumstances we find ourselves.

“In order to protect the continuity of the majority of the existing jobs and the possibility of creating new ones in the future, the survival of the airline is of paramount importance”’ the statement concluded.

Recall that the Airline had earlier denied it was having problems with its Pilots when it was reported that  the Pilots were threatening a strike action over a cut in their salaries and allowances.

They had said all was okay.

The Magazine gathered from different sources that it was the same Pilots that have relieved  of their jobs.

Kidnappers Release Two Immigration Officers, Abduct two in Enugu |The Source

Kidnappers, suspected to be herdsmen, struck in Enugu state, along Ugwuogo-Isiuzo road, kidnapping two men-a lawyer and a businessman.

This happened just as two senior immigration officers  kidnapped on their way to Sallah day have been released.

The victims were kidnapped returning from the village with their families and ordered out of the vehicle around Ora River,  abandoning the families on the road, stranded and looking for help.

The hoodlums used vehicles to block the road at about 7. 00pm  and shot sporadically in the air. Families say they have not been contacted by the abductors.

In a related development, two senior Immigration officers kidnapped on their way home for the Sallah holidays have been released. Speaking to this Magazine on condition of anonymity, a senior Immigration officer confirmed the story, saying that the news took him by surprise, making him cancel his own planned trip. “

“This security issue is very serious”, he said. “I had to cancel my own planned trip when I heard this. They are my colleagues in the Lagos Office”, he said.

According to him, the security situation has become so bad that even the late Chief of Staff to President Buhari, Abba Kyari, and and former Life Patron of the Newspapers proprietors association, Isa Funtua, had to be buried in Abuja due to security concerns over taking them back to their respective home towns.
