Invitation Withdrawal: Falana Backs NBA’s Invitation Withdrawal To Gov. El-Rufai |The Source

By Akinwale Kasali

Human Rights Activist and Lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, has thrown its weight in support of the Nigeria Bar Association’s, NBA, action, withdrawing the invitation extended to Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai.

NBA had earlier invited him as a speaker in the forthcoming NBA Virtual Annual General Conference 2020.

Following a petition initiated by some lawyers and was later signed online by over 1,300 persons, NBA withdrew the invitation.

Reacting, Falana commended the decision in a letter addressed to the chairman of the Conference Planning Committee, Professor Konyinsola Ajayi, SAN, dated 19th day of August, 2020.

Going down memory lane, he remembered how the entirety of Nigerian Lawyers boycotted all courts in the country from March 13-14, 2006 to protest the disobedience of court orders by some officials and agencies of the Federal Government.

“3 out of the 8 orders listed by NBA at the material time were flagrantly disobeyed by the administration of the Federal Capital Territory under the leadership of Mr. Nasir El-Rufai,” he recalled.

He further noted that the present Governor of Kaduna State has continued to refuse to comply with court orders.

According to Falana, the Federal Government was so embarrassed that it directed the then-Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Bayo Ojo SAN to ensure compliance with the disobeyed orders.

“It is on record that while other departments and agencies complied with the court orders the Federal Capital Territory ignored the directive of the Federal Government to kowtow to the rule of law.

“As if that was not enough, Mallam El-Rufai has continued to treat court orders with absolute contempt.” He said.

Mallam El-Rufai has a penchant for disobeying court orders, he noted, and reminded the Conference Planning Committee that it is bound by the provisions of the Nigerian Bar Association.

“The invitation extended to Mallam Nasir El-Rufai to address the 60th Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association should be withdrawn,” he stated categorically.

Oyo: Muslims Mobilise Against Makinde, Accuse Him Of Christianisation |The Source

Governor Seyi Makinde

By Tosin Olatokunbo

Governor Seyi Makinde received bipartisan votes from major religious bodies in the state last year when he was elected into the highest office in the Pacesetters’ state ahead Adebayo Adelabu, a Muslim and preferred  candidate of Abiola Ajimobi, the incumbent governor at the time.

Both Ajimobi and Adelabu were Mulims who could not secure victory for the APC candidate because of the popularity of Makinde of the PDP across religious divides.

But just one year in office, the governor has been accused of partisanship when it comes to the sharing of political appointments in the state.

Some Muslims under the aegis of the National Council of Muslim Youths Organisation, NACOMYO, have therefore sworn to mobilize their people against the re-election of Governor Makinde in 2023.

What is Governor Makinde’s sin? According to the angry Muslim youths, the state’s helmsman failed to declare a public holiday in the state to celebrate the new hijrah calendar.

NACOMYO are also not happy that Makinde called for the arrest of Professor Ishaq Oloyede of MURIC after the latter alleged the Christianization of the state by the governor.

The Islamic group disclosed this on Thursday at a special prayer and lecture for the commencement of Hijrah 1442 in reaction to the failure of the governor to declare a public holiday in the state to celebrate the new Hijrah calendar, where its state Coordinator, Dawood Afolabi, during a lecture tagged ‘Political development in Oyo State and the Muslims,’ accused the governor of marginalising Muslims.

NACOMYO said “It is disheartening that despite the promise of fairness and justice by the administration and continued lip-service to same at functions, Muslims are still being treated with disdain in government appointments.

“The glaring marginalisation in the composition of state executive, appointment into boards of tertiary institutions and the jettisoning of merit in the choice of head of Saki Zonal TESCOM are clear signals that Muslims should not trust the current helmsman in Oyo State.”

The group urged Muslims in the state to ensure that Governor Makinde did not return to office.

They told Mslims to “ keep our gunpowder dry and prepare for the next election. The withdrawal of ‘first Muharram’ as work free day in the state is another indicator. We, however, put our trust in Allah for a better deal via change of hands in government by 2023.”

Meanwhile, some political and religious leaders, in response to the issue, told the magazine that NACOMYO is purely on its own, that its opinion does not represent that of the Muslim Umah in the state.

Chief Alex Ajipe, Manager of Ondo-Linyi Industrial Hub

By Ayodele Oni, Akure

Ondo state is gradually moving away from the acronym of  civil servants’ state to an industrialized one going by revelations of a top industrialist that not less than $350 Million has been ploughed to boost the economy of the state within the last two years.

According to Chief Alex Ajipe, Manager of Ondo-Linyi Industrial Hub in Ore, this is coming from private foreign investors.

Ajipe disclosed to members of the Correspondent Chapel of the Nigerian Unions of Journalists(NUJ) on Thursday  in Akure that foreign investors now storm the state as a result of the present administration’s resolve to change the narrative of the state.

He noted that over 95 per cent of MoU signed by previous administration did not see the light of the day and that under the Akeredolu-led administration, 95 per cent MoU signed had been implemented.

“Before the advent of the present administration in 2016, there was no public industry in Ondo State that was functioning like Oluwa Glass, Ifon Ceramic, Ile-Oluji Cocoa plantation, due to  mismanagement and lost of focus, which made the state to slide from industrialisation and tagged civil servants state.

As at last count, we have over $350million of foreign direct investment that has been imported into the state, apart from the one converted to structure as confirmed by the Ministry of Trade and Investment.

“We actually have 15 different companies that are coming into the phase one of Ondo-Linyi Industrial Hub at the moment, seven of them have commenced operations, so, we still have eight to go.

“Some of companies are truck assembly plant,  textile industry that produces thread for lace fabric  and now we are installing machine to produce Ankara fabric.

“Also, we have MDF factory which is the first and only type in Nigeria and ethanol factory.

“We are still going to see battery, plastic, cooler, polythene factories and others coming to the state, which will help create employment and empowerment to the people.

“We now see why investors can take Ondo State very serious in the area of trying to exploit the potentials we have.”

The industrialist stated that no viable economy can grow without looking at private sector saying all the developing countries, even developed ones, thrive by depending on the private sector.

Ajipe disclosed further that Ondo State is gradually becoming hub of the nation with necessary arrangements concluded to commence operation of 1,000 tonnes of cement factory.

He said that “93 per cent pure limestone has been lying down at Okeluse since God created Ondo State and nobody is looking at it and this is what Governor Akeredolu is doing.

“I can assure you,  if not for COVID 19 by now the investor should be exploiting because the application for license is at the ministry of mines for approval.

While speaking on afforestation, Ajipe explained that Akeredolu has planted over six million  tree seedlings to secure wood base industry in the state.

Tolulope Arotile

By Akinwale Kasali

Nehemiah Adejor, the prime Suspect in the killing, in a vehicle accident, of Nigeria’s first female combatant Pilot Flying Officer Tolulope Arotile has been charged with culpable homicide.

Adejoh drove the car that killed Arotile.

However, two other suspects, also, arrested in connection with the  Officer’s death, were set free by the Kaduna State Magistrate Court 1.

The police noted that there was no premeditation in the death of Arotile, when the case came up on Thursday August 20.

The prosecution, Counsel DSP Martins  Leo prayed the Court to discharge the 2nd and 3rd suspects, Folorunsho Igbekele Faith and Gbayegun Deji as their investigation did not find them wanting.

A legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecution, Bayero Dari which was read out in court revealed that there is sufficient evidence to prosecute the 1st suspect, Nehemiah Adejor for culpable homicide not punishable with death.

It read; “On the 14th day of July, 2020′ the suspects all male, of Auta Alkali Farin Gida, Mando Kaduna inside a Kia Sorento with Registration. No AZ 478 MKA Kaduna being driven by the 1st suspect sited the deceased (NAF/4512F Flying officer Tolulope Arotile) at NAF Base Kawo, Kaduna, whom they identified as their school mate at Air Force Secondary school, Kaduna.

“The 1st suspect, full of enthusiasm, recklessly reversed the car in order to meet the deceased, and in the process, ran over her, consequent upon which the deceased lay unconsciously on the ground. The deceased was rushed to NAFX64 Base Hospitàl-for- medical attention but was later pronounced dead by the medical Doctors at the Hospital.

“The suspects were arrested and taken to 461 NAF Hospital Kaduna for toxicology test and results were all negative. They were later transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Kaduna on the 24th day of July, 2020 for further discreet investigation.

“Police investigation reveals that all the suspects attended the same secondary school with the deceased and upon sighting her the 1st suspect recklessly reversed the car and eventually ran over the deceased which led to her untimely death.

“The 1st suspect admitted in his cautionary statement that on the 14th day of July, 2020 he was together with the two other suspects in a car KIA Sorento he was driving, when he saw the deceased walking along the roadside of the Air force Base.

“He informed the other suspects who screamed enthusiastically after which he stopped and started reversing the car in order to meet the deceased and exchange pleasantries. In the process of which he mistakenly ran over her and she later died. He denied having any premeditated plan to kill her.

“The 2nd suspect also stated in his cautionary statement that on the fateful day he along with the 1st and 3rd suspect went on hangout and on their way back the 1st suspect cited the deceased whom they later saw and became extensively happy. That the 1st suspect stopped the car and began to reverse same in order to meet up with the deceased and exchange greetings since they have not met a long time.

“That when he noticed the 1st suspect was driving speedily off the road he cautioned him, but unfortunately he got confused and ran over the deceased. He out rightly denied any arrangement to cause the death of the deceased.

“He added that being a trained nurse he assisted in resuscitating the deceased at the hospital but all attempt proved abortive until she was pronounced clinically dead.

“In his cautionary statement, the 3rd suspect corroborated the statement of the 2nd suspect in all material particulars as to the events of the 14th day of July, 2020, as it relates to the death of Flying Officer Tolutope Arotile at NAF Base Kaduna.

“It is clear also from the investigation done; the 2nd and 3rd suspects were passengers and friends of the 1st suspect who was driving the vehicle.

“From the foregoing there is sufficient evidence to prosecute the 1st suspect for the offence of Culpable Homicide not punishable with death contrary to Section 191 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law, 2017 as there is no premeditation in the death of the deceased.

“There is, however, insufficient evidence against the 2nd and 3rd suspects as the entire investigation did not disclose any offence against them other than being passengers in the vehicle of the 1st suspect.

“To prosecute them, therefore, will be embarking on an evidential conjuncture totally unknown to our Criminal Justice System, they can be discharged accordingly pursuant to Section 125 (6) (e) of the Kaduna State Administration of Criminal Justice Law, 2017 and thereafter be used as prosecution witnesses in the trial of the 1st suspect.”

It was further learnt that Adejor is going to be arraigned at the State High Court for culpable homicide not punishable with death on the 3rd of September, 2020.

Rahamaniya Boss: From Sokoto Kiosk To UK Prison |The Source

By Tosin Olatokunbo

Businessman Abdulrahman Bashir, owner of Rahamaniya Oil and Gas, started out as a kiosk owner in Sokoto state, where he was born and lived with his poor family until fate brought him in contact with oil moguls A.A Rano and Femi Otedola and his life changed astronomically.

From a small shop owner, Bashir who was barely 30 years at the time started robbing shoulders with the big and mighty in the oil and gas business, until a brush with Otedola, one of his benefactors almost crippled his business in that sector.

He survived and later went ahead to become owner of other chains of businesses beyond the oil and gas sector and yet hit by another misfortune as a result of the meltdown in Nigeria’s financial sector 11 years ago.

Like other businessmen in the country, Bashir was caught in the web of N40 billion debt he owed defunct Oceanic Bank Plc that almost ruined him following AMCON decision to take over his properties to recover the huge debt.

Since then, he has been struggling to live his former ostentatious lifestyle, as many of his projects suffered including his philanthropic work in Sokoto and other northern states, where he normally distributes food and money to poor people during Ramadan fasting period.

Those past misfortunes, from all indications, cannot be compared to his 10 months prison sentence by a United Kingdom, UK court recently, over breach of contract with Sahara Energy Resources Ltd, another indigenous oil and gas firm.

Sahara Reporters reported that Justice Butcher of England and Wales High Court has sentenced Bashir to prison for breaching multiple orders of the court in a pending suit instituted by Sahara Energy Resources Ltd.

How did he become an inmate?

Bashir, the UK court ruled, was found guilty of breaching multiple orders of the court in a suit instituted by Sahara Energy Resources Ltd, including the release of 6,400.69 metric tonnes gas oil to Sahara Energy Resource Ltd or its agent from Rahamaniyya Oil and Gas Ltd, Jetty, Apapa Lagos.

This was in line with a contract Ultimate Oil and Gas, the trading arm of Rahamaniyya Oil in the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC), entered into with Sahara Energy in 2018.

Ultimate had agreed to buy 15,000 metric tonnes in the Vacuum of Gas Oil, and to secure the deal, a Collateral Management Agreement, CMA containing a London arbitration clause was entered into on July 8, 2018 between the two parties.

According to the details of the court proceedings Ultimate defaulted in payment after Sahara had delivered the consignment worth $10,760,728.77.

Later in 2018, the two parties entered into a settlement agreement where Ultimate was expected to make monthly payments, but the company still failed to do so, leading to the termination of the deal by Sahara in May 2019.

This led to the arbitration in a UK court which ordered Ultimate to fulfill its contract obligations to Sahara.

When Bashir failed to carry out the order, Sahara instituted a contempt of court proceeding against Bashir which led to his sentencing in February by Justice Butcher few months ago.

Butcher said concerning his sentence “The basis of the sentence was that Mr Bashir had committed continuing breaches of the order of Mr Justice Robin Knowles of 1 August 2019 and of the order of Mr Justice Bryan of 6 September 2019.”

Bashir was also fined fined £500,000.

Ondo 2020: Jimoh Ibrahim Endorses Akeredolu; Predicts Mass Defection To APC |The Source

Akeredolu and Jimoh Ibrahim

By Akinwale Kasali

In a surprise move, which has gladdened the All Progressives Congress, Ondo State, a former gubernatorial candidate of the All Nigerians People’s Party, ANPP, in Ondo State,  Chief Jimoh Ibrahim, has endorsed the  candidacy of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu for a second term in office, in the oncoming October Governorship election.

Akeredolu is seeking a second term in an election many predict could be tough.

But if the analysis of Ibrahim is anything to go by, it may not be as tough as it seems.  Indeed, he projects the state could become a one political party state, and has asked Akeredolu’s party, the APC, to open its doors for thousands of people that would soon defect to the party. He also predicts Akeredolu would win with a wide margin of votes.

He is likely to be one of those who he predicted would join the APC, as he promised make up his mind in a matter of days. He also promised to give massive support to Akeredolu’s re-election but.

Ibrahim, a businessman and shrewd investor, also applauds  The Governor for steering the ship of the State away from financial strangulation.

He spoke at his country home in Igbotako, Okitipupa Local Government area, on Wednesday, when he received the State Working Committee of APC, led by the chairman, Engr. Ade Adetimehin.

The billionaire explained that the people were happy with the giant strides of the APC-led government, which he said informs the decision to join the party en masse, according to a statement from the party State Publicity Secretary, Mr. Alex Kalejaye.

Reacting to the request by the Chairman that he should join the party, the political gladiator pledged to give the request a thought, and get back to them in few days’ time.

He said, “While I promise to sleep over your request, let me advise you to open your doors for thousands of defectors that are set to join the APC. They are joining from the People’s Democratic Party and other parties.”

He promised to be “extremely supportive” of the re-election bid of Akeredolu, predicting that the governor would win the election “with a wide margin”.

Ibrahim wondered how the Governor was able to move the state forward in less than four years, despite the huge debts, abandoned projects and several months of unpaid salaries he inherited from previous administration.

“I thank him, on behalf of the State for not ploughing the state into financial constipation. Again, I am not surprised; here is a man who led the Nigerian Bar Association without a blemish”, he said.

Ibrahim further explained that a secret of the success of the administration is that the Governor has more of strengths, and less of weaknesses, adding  that “the reverse is the case with his predecessor”.

Earlier, the Ondo State Chairman of APC, Engr. Adetimehin, applauded the philanthropic disposition of the politician and businessman, which he added has helped to restore many hopes.

He expressed confidence in the political ability and strength of the former gubernatorial candidate, and pleaded with him to join the APC, “so we could join forces to win and retain Ondo State for more development projects.”

Adetimehin said Ibrahim has excelled in many fields of endeavours, including academics and entrepreneurship, saying all these are ingredients of his enviable political strategies.

Also on the entourage, according to Kalejaye, were party chairmen, chairmanship candidates, and their running  mates from the six local government areas in the South Senatorial district.

Unbelievable: How A Nigerien Citizen Duped Nigeria Of Trillions of Naira; EFCC Declares Him Wanted |The Source

EFCC Operatives

By Gideon Njoku

A citizen of neighbouring Niger Republic, has duped Nigeria of an unbelievable obscene amount of money. It runs into Trillions of Naira.

Here’s how much it is alleged that is involved, according to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

* $394 million.

*€9.9 million.

*N369 million.

His name is Aboubakar Hima.

The EFCC has declared him wanted.

According to the EFCC, in an advert declaring him wanted, and signed by the Commission’s Ag. Head, Media and Publicity, Tony Orilade, Hima “is wanted in a case of criminal conspiracy, contract scam, misappropriation of public funds, money laundering to the tune of $394million, €9.9million, and, N369 million.”

Hima, the Chief Executive Officer of Societe D’Equipment Internationaux, SEI,  received the monies to supply military equipment to the  Nigeria’s Military.

He didn’t quite deliver. Perhaps, he under-delivered, or cut corners.

Said the EFCC: “He is alleged to have received the sums for the purchase of equipment for the Nigerian Military. However, investigations have revealed discrepancies in the supply of the equipment.”

Invitations to him by the EFCC have brazenly been ignored by Hima. He had to be declared wanted. “Having failed to honour invitations from the Commission, Hima is, currently, evading investigation,  thus the need to declare him wanted,” the EFCC said.

The EFCC did not state when he got the contract, or how he got it, or from whom, but the Commission, had on July 23, 2020, secured the forfeiture of N46m, and five houses, belonging to him, and his company, to the Federal Government.

He is aged 46 years, and speaks both Hausa and, not very proficiently, English language.

Ondo Govt Moves To Reduce Tuition Fees In Tertiary Institutions; PDP Says Timing Meant To Deceive |The Source

By Ayodele Oni, Akure

Apparently bowing to outcry over high tuition fees being paid in government owned institutions in Ondo state, Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has assured of their review and possible reduction.

This assurance, coming less than two months to the Governorship election in the state has been faulted by the opposition People’s Democratic Party, (PDP) which described it as “a campaign to hoodwink the electorate.”

Akeredolu, made the pledge while playing host to the leadership of National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS,  led by its President, Mr Danielson Bamidele in Akure.

Describing students as important to his administration, the governor pointed out that he had instructed his team to find out the tuition payable in other state owned institutions so as to know what steps to take on the reduction of tuition in the state.

”Students are important to us. It will take all of us to sit down to have this discussion about tuition. It’s not a discussion of the deaf. All of us will be hearing. A time when you go to Abuja and take N9 million as against when you go to Abuja now and get far less and you have to pay salary.

Akeredolu used the occasion again to send banters to his predecessor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko saying “unlike somebody that decided not to pay for seven months, I met seven months salary arrears, and I have paid six. So I prioritize the workers’ welfare.

“We shore up our IGR to spend more on infrastructure. I note what you have raised on this issue of fees.

“At my last meeting, I have said, let me have where they are paying less than what we charge here. What we found out was that for those newly admitted, we still charge the lowest in tuition, but for the second year and all, we have state owned institutions that charge lesser than us. And if not for this issue of Covid, we have decided to reduce it. We will reduce it.

“It’s not a matter for political gains. I know by the time we announce it, they will turn it to political gains. We will make sure that by next week we make the announcement on the fee”.

In its reaction, the PDP asked governor Akeredolu whether he just realised that hundreds of students have dropped out of state owned tertiary institutions on account of increased fees;

“Did Akeredolu not say that the increment of fees parents were complaining about is not more than the cost of a pair of shoes?

“Making such a pledge now that elections are just around the corner is laughable and ridiculous. It is a calculated attempt to deceive the people who have outrightly rejected Akeredolu and the APC for anti-people policies and Programes.”

A statement by the publicity secretary, Mr Kennedy Peretei, pointed out that there is no amount of deceit and fake promises that can save Akeredolu from defeat at the polls come October, 2020.

The NANS leadership had earlier lauded what it described as “Akeredolu giant strides in all sectors” assuring him of support during the forthcoming election.
