Just as the Ekiti state Police Command is still trying to unravel those behind the killing of a top government official on Sunday night, a United States Returnee, and indigene of the state, has been kidnapped.

The victim, Jide Ijadare, reportedly, a retired US Army officer, was whisked away from his farm along Ijan/Ise road on Monday by armed men.

His security aide, who struggled with the kidnappers, was killed on the spot while they drove away with Mr. Ijadare.

Ijadare was reported to have returned from the USA to start a palm oil producing factory at Ijan, his countryhome ,where he has employed over 50 people.

Ijan road, which is one of the link highways to Abuja, has become dreaded due to activities of kidnappers.

A few months ago, a director with one of the federal agencies was abducted while his driver was shot.

Police Public Relations officer in the state, Sunday Abutu, confirmed the incident, assuring that policemen are on the trail of the abductors.

David Jejelowo, a director in the state local government commission was shot dead Sunday evening at his residence, off Ijan road, Ado Ekiti in the presence of his wife by gunmen.

Ekiti APC Goes For The Jugular; To Discipline Ojudu, Tinubu’s Son-In-Law |The Source

By Ayodele Oni

The All Progressives Congress, (APC), in Ekiti state, is set to suspend some of its members for their continued flagrant disobedience to party rules.

To be affected are the Special Adviser on Political Matters to President Muhammadu Buhari, Senator Babafemi Ojudu, Oyetunde Ojo, who is a son-in-law to APC National leader, Bola Tinubu.

Others are Femi Adeleye, Bunmi Ogunleye, Akin Akomolafe, Bamigboye Adegoroye, Wole Oluyede, Olusoga Owoeye, Dele Afolabi, Toyin Oluwasola, Engr Ayo Ajibade and Ben Oguntuase.

Already, they have been summoned to appear before an eight-member Disciplinary Committee set up by the party to look into their case.

Recall that those listed for suspension are in Court to challenge the process of emergence of the Executive members from the ward to state.

They insisted that there was no election, and that the officers were handpicked by Governor Kayode Fayemi.

They were given just ten days to show appearance.

Addressing Journalists in Ado Ekiti on Tuesday, a member of the disciplinary panel, and APC’s Director of Media and Publicity, Sam Oluwalana, explained that the aggrieved leaders refused to withdraw their case, despite the directive given by the National Caretaker Committee  of the party, in July

According to him, the party has no option than to invoke article 21 of the APC’s constitution by way of commencement of suspension procedure against them.

Governor Fayemi has been having a running battle with most of them, especially, Senator Ojodu. They accuse him of running a-one-man show after they had collectively helped him win his election.

Former Governor Segun Oni left the point, and went back to the PDP, from where he came from.

What Pushes Dr Mailafia? |The Source

0
Dr Mailiafia Obadiah

By John Ohioma

Dr Obadiah Mailafia, an academic, former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), failed Presidential candidate, has just survived another “ordeal” in the hands of the Directorate of State Security Service, DSS.

He was, for the third time, invited by the DSS, to its Jos Command office to make some more clarifications on the grave, sensitive submissions he made, about a month ago, on the state of the Nation, during an interview session with a Radio Station.

The way Dr Obadiah sounded before he went to honour his invitation, one would think he was on a visit to hell. One would think he was going to be nailed to a cross, having declared himself, as part of his playing to the gallery, a martyr.

A couple of days to the September 14 visit to the DSS, Obadiah had issued an alarming statement to announce the invitation. He said he did not know why he was being invited again. He said his life was in danger. He said he was not sure he would come out alive. He summoned all his friends and associates, supporters,  and just about everybody, to descend on the DSS office in Jos.

It was a call to arms, meant to intimidate the Service, incite the public against it, and detract from the seriousness of the trouble he brought upon himself.

For record purposes, even though his ill-advised statement went viral, this writer pleads that you read it again.

He wrote:

“Dear Comrades, Beloved Brethren, I have once again  (for the 3rd time) been ordered to appear before the DSS at their Jos HQ this coming Monday 14th September,  at 11.00 am.

“This is in addition to our battle in court,  as my lawyer appears  before a Jos High Court today Friday the 11th, seeking a restraining order against the DIG Criminal Investigations Department (CID) who are also pursuing me.

“I spent over 20 years of my working life abroad as a university teacher, banker and international civil servant with unblemished record. I have no criminal record — not even a parking ticket. Sadly,  it is in my own fatherland that I’m being subjected to criminal investigation and such extreme political persecution.

“Please, pray for me. I have reasons to believe that my life is in danger and that some powerful political forces want to silence me forever. For speaking the truth. For speaking on behalf of the holy martyrs — of thousands of innocent children, women, elderly and youths that have been killed in our beloved country.

“It is only in our benighted country that a man who speaks from his conscience can be hounded like a common criminal. Please, those of you in the Jos area or who can easily travel to Jos,  please kindly mobilise and be there en masse to support me on Monday at 11.00 am as I go once again into the Lions’ Den.

“I’m a believer in non-violence. Please,  no-one should throw even a little stone on my behalf.  Let us become candles of light and peace in this Age of Darkness.

“Thank you so immensely and may God bless you all.

Obadiah Mailafia”

Dr Mailafia’s statement attracts sympathy. But don’t be deceived. It drips of mischief, and a deliberate distortion of the account he gave, himself, of his two previous encounters with the DSS. Without being prompted, he had said his experience with the personnel of the Service was cordial. He said he was treated with respect.  He said his interrogators were very courteous to him. He said he was not in anyway harrassed. He said their discussion held in a relaxed environmental. Yet, in his inciting call to arms, he said he was going into the “lion’s den again.”

In his column, which appeared in the Vanguard of September 14, the day he went to honour his invitation to the DSS, he had expressed the same alarming fears. He remembered that Chief MKO Abiola died after “drinking tea in the Villa”. He talked about a dungeon, somewhere, at the Kirikiri Prison, Lagos where a fence  separates Prisoners from Crocodiles, and where Prisoners are routinely fed to the crocodiles.

True? But that is just Dr Mailafia again. Ask him for proof, he will have none. He picks gossips from market places and beer palours, and, with a straight face,  and gusto, presents them as gospel truth.

What irks most in his write-up in the Vanguard was where he wrote: “What perplexes in my current travails is that I did not say anything that has not been said before.”

Mailafia, perhaps, rightly loves to flaunt his academic accomplishments and international exposure.

Nothing wrong with that. But for a man who parades, and flaunts, those accomplishments, his reasoning falls to the lowest ebb. He neither talks like a diplomat, an international scholar or a banker who rose to the enviable office of the CBN DG. His reasoning is very elementary. So, because other people had said the same things before, he copied and repeated them without interrogating the contents in order to remove the chaff from the wheat. What, then, is the difference between him and an unexposed stark illiterate?

His reasoning is so pedestrian, very elementary. So, because somebody killed, and got away with it, others should go on a killing spree, and get away with their actions too.

In case Dr Mailafia does not still understand, the reason why Security Personnel picked interest in him is  because the allegations were made by him. If they were made by a nobody, nobody would have taken them seriously. But for somebody of his status – an academic, international Civil servant,  former DG, CBN, a Senior Directing Staff at the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies, a former Presidential candidate – it will be stupid to ignore.

Perhaps, Dr Mailafia does still not understand the gravity of his public allegations. He needs to be reminded.

He said, with all authority, supported by the weight of his credentials that:

*The insurgents, terrorising Nigeria, were on Phase 1.

*The second phase would entail their invading the cities and slaughtering prominent Nigerians.

* A Civil war will break out in 2022.

* Insurgents have invaded the forests in the Southern part of Nigeria.

*All through the lockdown period, no flghts, no inter-state movements, insurgents freely used airplanes, and  deposited arms in parts of Nigeria.

*A serving Northern Governor is a Commander of the Boko Haram.

Mailafia said he had his intelligence channels, and that he got the information from repented Boko Haram Commanders with whom he had interacted, not only once, or twice, or thrice, but many times.

These were what he authoritatively said, and he expected Security Personnel to clap for him, and/or not invite him for clarifications. Where does that happen?

So far, Dr Mailafia has been decently handled. He confirms that. He has been treated with respect. He confirms that too. He says he had not been harrassed in anyway.

So, what does he want? What pushes him? What does he stand to gain by being an alarmist? What does he gain by double speaking? Why does he tell the DSS something else, and says another thing thereafter?

Why wouldn’t he apologise, publicly, for mis-speaking instead of playing to the gallery?

Till date, Dr Mailafia has not been able to prove or establish his allegations. He would apologise behind closed doors, and once outside, plays to the gallery. That belittles his status, and subtracts from his credibility.

Why does he not admit he lied? Why does he not say he spoke like a politician that he is, with an eye on  the fall- out.

He has since admitted, according to the DSS,  that no Boko Haram Commander spoke to him. He said he heard  what he said from traders in a market. He has not named the Governor involved because he knows nobody told him that.

When he was released after his first invitation, he admitted he ought to have collaborated his story before going public. He just read the situation on ground, and drew his conclusions.

He knew that the false allegations he made would  be popular,  given the state of the Nation so, he ran with it. But what does anybody, at his level, gain  by deliberately over-heating the polity.

On Monday, he said he was going to the lion’s den. But has, now, admitted that he mis-spoke, that he did not mean it that way, that he should have chosen his words more carefully than he did.

Why is he over-impulsive? Why does he, in the instant case,  always mis-speak?

It is deliberate.

Nobody is happy about the security situation in the country. Most Nigerians are worried sick. The killings are getting out of hand. Only evil minds would condone it. But it is irresponsible to take advantage of the bad situation, and worsen it.

Mailafia is lucky he is dealing with a decent Service, which Leadership is polished and professional. Otherwise, he would, since, have been given the treatment he so desperately yearns for.

He says he is a patriot. He should prove that by apologising for the misinformation he has so brazenly spread. He should apologise for brazenly indulging in scare-mongering.

When he does, it should mark an end to his invitations by Security Agencies.

Rigging Is Coup D’etat – Aminu Tambuwal |The Source

In 2007, the United Nations General Assembly resolved to observe 15 September of every year as the International Day of Democracy—with the purpose of promoting and upholding the principles of democracy—and invited all member states and organizations to commemorate the day in an appropriate manner that contributes to raising public awareness.

The preamble of the resolution affirms that:

“…while democracies share common features, there is no single model of democracy and that democracy does not belong to any country or region… …democracy is a universal value based on the freely-expressed will of people to determine their own political, economic, social and cultural systems, and their full participation in all aspects of life.:

To mark this day in Nigeria, it is important to note that the struggle for Democracy has involved sweat, blood, diplomacy, compromises and negotiations. This had traversed the whole period of pre and post independence struggle, the First, Second, Third Republics. And our current experiment since 1999.

In our contemporary Nigeria,  many young people who did not participate in the various struggles may not understand the intensity of the price paid by our forebears. It is with this in mind that I wish to flag various dangers lurking around and threatening to derIl our present Democratic experiment.

The strengthening of our electoral infrastructure has become very urgent, if we are to restore the hope and aspiration of Nigerians that democracy still counts.

Indeed  the upcoming Gubernatorial elections in Edo and Ondo States is a test case of our preparedness for a rule based and consent enabled governance.

It has become imperative to rethink the role of not just the electoral umpire, but also the activities of various security agencies in our electoral process in such a manner as to  instill in them the culture of inflexible support for democracy and its practice.

Any electoral victory obtained other than through the legitimate votes of the people is nothing short of a COUP D’ETAT.

It completely violates our Constitution which envisaged that governmental authority must be obtained only through the will of the people.

Going forward, I call on the National Assembly to immediately conclude the long overdue amendments to the Electoral Act to entrench provisions that make it impossible for rigging and manipulation of elections.

In the same vein, any further amendments to the Constitution must take cognisance of our experiences in previous elections.

It may be that time has come to introduce aspects of technology in our elections that are fool proof and such should be test run with other elections before the general elections in 2023.

Finally, it bears repeating to say that good governance anchored on a sound economy and corrupt free progressive social, cultural, and infrastructural development is a sine qua non for sustainable democracy.

It behoves on us all , particularly the political and economic actors on stage to do our utmost to ensure a stable  Nigeria.

Finally, I call on the Civil Society and the Press to continue to play its watchdog role of keeping government in check in order to ensure the survival of our Democracy.

US Ban On Election Riggers: Timi Frank Urges UK, EU To Do Same; Says Ban Will Strengthen Nigeria’s Democracy Demands |The Source

0

By Akinwale Kasali

Former All Progressives Congress,  APC, Deputy Publicity Secretary and Activist, Comrade Timi Frank, has commended the Government of the United States on the ban placed on election riggers in Nigeria, especially during the conduct of the November 2019 governorship elections in Kogi and Bayelsa States. The ban on the issuance of Visa to such people, and the cancellation of subsisting Visas, also extended to those propagating violence in the up-coming Edo and Ondo Governorship Elections.

Frank had ,also, asked the United Kingdom, and the European Union to follow suit.

In a statement in Abuja,  Frank, described the announcement by the US Government as a commendable step that will further strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.

He also called on the US Government to include the wives and children of all affected politicians, security operatives and Judges who help validate fraudulent election results at Tribunals and the Appellate Courts.

He recalled that he made a similar appeal in a statement in July 2019, but was treated with kid gloves.

He noted that election riggers are enemies of Nigeria, as their actions are responsible, in part, for the insecurity, poverty and social dislocation in the country.

He said: “The US Government must be commended for this move which is in furtherance of its commitment to strengthening democracy in Nigeria as it would help checkmate individuals who have operated with impunity at the expense of the generality of the Nigerian populace.

“This Visa Restrictions should also be extended to recalcitrant Judges, INEC officials, Security agencies and political party chieftains who aided and abetted the rigging of the Kogi and Bayelsa States governorship elections, while all those who perpetuate similar crimes in the Edo and Ondo polls should not be spared.

“For our democracy to survive, all true lovers of democracy must ensure that the elections in Edo and Ondo states produce genuine leaders who will pilot the affairs of these two states.”

The Bayelsa-born political activist also urged  the Government of the United Kingdom and the European Union to emulate the action of the United States Government by placing a similar visa ban on Judges, security agents and their leaders, and appointees of governments who have been undermining the nation’s democracy through subversion of election processes.

He said they should also ensure that members of the National Assembly and other persons who would want to partake in the destruction of the nation’s nascent democracy are prevented from doing so.

The United States, on Monday, announced the ban on the issuance of Visas to all those who rigged the Governorship Elections held in Bayelsa and Kogi states in 2019.

It also extended it to those perpetuating, or planning violence or rigging during the up-coming Edo and Ondo states’ governorship elections slated for September 19 and, October 10, respectively.

Buhari Should Be Held Responsible If Edo Election Is Rigged |The Source

Sam Amadi

By Sam Amadi

A ruling party at the center is the one with the greatest incentive and capability to rig election.

It was the same with PDP.

APC, please guarantee free and fair elections in Edo. Election observation is nonsense in Third World country.

It’s President Buhari, as Commander-in-Chief, that has responsibility to ensure fair security services for elections and independent regulation by INEC.

The US has threatened visa sanction for those who rig Edo and Ondo elections. This should extend to INEC Chairman and top officials who fail in their job; and most of them have woefully failed in their job.

But the threat is no enough.

Visa refusal for the US will not be enough deterrence as long as Europe and Dubai (especially the latter) is available to these criminals (yes, criminals, because election rigging is high crime).

We need a collective refusal of visa by all European countries plus Dubai for this to bite.

Sadly, Trump has marginalized the US and lost global leadership to mobilize global visa ban to these criminals who have frustrated economic and social development in Nigeria through incredible elections.

Nigeria is now a pathetic and failed country. The only prospect of its retrieval from the dustbin of state failure hangs tremulously on the edge of fair and free elections. Free and fair elections don’t necessary produce democracy or development.

But as democracy scholar, Adam Przeworski rightly observed, elections are conflict avoidance and conflict resolution mechanisms. Where they are credible, they allow for orderly change of leadership with the added advantage of entrenching innovation and accountability.

So the gravest enabler of State failure in Nigeria is an electoral system that has become criminality.

The truth is that Nigerian electoral process is a criminal process.

That’s why more self-confessed criminals are winning elections in Nigeria. In Edo they will be on full display on both sides.

Everyday, the electoral process becomes more criminalized such that only higher cadres of criminals will have the skill-set and immorality to win elections at the polls or at the court.

So, Nigeria has little prospect. And the army of election observers and monitors will not help you.

Those are jobbers earning their living. Except President Buhari receives courage, sincerity and honesty to stop those who will rig Edo and Ondo and other elections in Nigeria, there’s just little or no hope of escape from complete state failure.

So, you know who to hold responsible for rigged elections in Edo.

Prof Okoko, Dies Of Cancer; Dickson Mourns, Says Ijaw Nation Has Lost A Courageous Leader |The Source

Prof Kimse Okoko

The immediate past Governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Seriake Dickson, has expressed sadness at the death of former President of the Ijaw National Congress, INC,  Prof Kimse Okoko.

Okoko died, after years of battle against cancer, at the age of 80.

A statement  by Dickson’s Media Adviser, Mr Fidelis Soriwei, quoted him  as saying that Okoko’s death was more painful coming a few months  after the sudden death of his son, Keniebi Okoko, due to a failed surgery.

The former Governor described the death of Okoko as a heavy loss to Bayelsa and indeed the Ijaw nation.

He said that Bayelsa, the Ijaw nation, and the Niger Delta would miss the wealth of experience, the resilience and courage of the late university Don.

He recalled that Okoko would be remembered as one of the men who stood up to give the Ijaw nation a direction when the people were in dire need of leadership.

He recalled that Okoko devoted a chunk of his life to the service of God, the Ijaw nation and  indeed the Nigerian Nation as a lecturer of many years, and as President of the INC.

He stressed that Okoko was a man of principle, who rendered selfless service to the Ijaw nation with uncommon dedication.

Chief Dickson urged the members of the family to be consoled by the exemplary life Okoko  lived during his many years on earth.

The former Governor who prayed for the eternal repose of the soul of the departed former INC leader also prayed to the Almighty God to grant the family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

FG Is Drawing Blood From Anaemic Patients – Bishop Onuoha |The Source

Bishop David Okechukwu Chikezie Onuoha

By George  Best Okoroh

The Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Okigwe South, Rt. Rev. David Onuoha has come down hard on the Federal Government.

He said that it has put Nigerians through all kinds of sufferings, and worsens the sad situation everyday by imposing more taxes and hiking tariffs. “The Federal Government is drawing blood from anaemic patients”, he submitted.

Particularly, Onuoha decried the recent hike in the pump price of petroleum products and electricity tariff.

Delivering his Presidential Address/Charge with the theme ” The Reason for the calling”: at the Third Session of the Ninth Synod of the Diocese held at St. Barnabas Church, Abueke, Ihitte Uboma Local Council of Imo State,  the Bishop challenged the Federal Government to provide a five star hospital in every State of the country in the next three years. He said government should create the enabling environment for private sector participation  in this imitative.

Bishop Onuoha who also is the Archbishop-Elect, Owerri Ecclesiastical Province,  bemoaned the poor health facilities in the country which the Covid 19 pandemic has exposed. The Anglican Prelate who was pained at the excruciating hardship the Nigerian citizen were being subjected to by the Federal  Government , urged government to convince itself whether it has not deviated from its primary responsibility of making life conducive and secured for the people.

Bishop Onuoha was further irked that the already impoverished Nigerians were also being taxed so much that it was like constantly drawing blood from an anemic patient which according to the Bishop was an act of wickedness.

He also lamented the lopsideness  and imbalance in the allocation of oil wells and fields in the country, advocating the reversal of the policy of allocating these oil wells and fields to individuals. He advised that government should, instead, allocate these oil wells and fields to bodies and organizations like the NUC, NMA, NUT etc adding that by such policy   the afore named bodies would have enough funds not only to improve their service conditions, but also reduce the incidents of industrial actions prevalent in the country.

The Bishop noted with nostalgia as a dangerous development, the demand for “matching  ground”by the youths of some communities who make this demand from investors before they were allowed to settle on any parcel of land.

He also considered as bizarre the demand for corporate social responsibility on the Church, wondering which corporate social responsibility could be more than the schools and hospitals, hygiene, agriculture, and the fight against obnoxious practice the Church has been noted for since inception 145 years ago.

“I Got N250 Million From Obasanjo’s Failed Third Term Project” – Federal Lawmaker; Calls Dr Mailafia A Liar |The Source

0
Farouk Adamu Aliyu

By Charles Igbo

Farouk Adamu Aliyu, a former Federal House of Representatives member, said Tuesday morning that, as a Lawmaker, at the time of President Olusegun Obasanjo’s Government, he was given the sum of N250m to support the Third Term Project of the former President.

The allegation was very strong, that as Obasanjo’s  constitutional second,  and final term was getting to an end, the former President desired to get a third term through the National Assembly. But it was roundly rejected by a majority of the members, fully supported by a number of people outside the NASS, including his then   Vice President, Atiku Abubakar.

At the time, the House of Representatives Speaker, Ghali Na’Abba,  had vehemently stood against it and, one day, displayed money, stacked in Ghana-Must-Go Bags, allegedly, given to members to support the project.

But Obasanjo always denied that there was any such move, from him, for a third term in office, insisting that there was nothing like that.

However, Hon Aliyu, speaking on a Channels Television interview segment Tuesday morning, revealed that  his own share of the money was part of the billions displayed in the House, as evidence.

Aliyu said Lawmakers were bribed with between N50m, each, upwards to support the project, but said that his was N250million.

Aliyu, also slammed those condemning the invitation, from the Directorate of State Services, (DSS), to former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Dr Obodiah Mailafia over his interview with a Radio Station.

Dr Mailafia had, in the interview, alleged among other serious issues, that a serving Northern Governor is a Commander of the insurgent group, Boko Haram. He had attributed his souce to the sect’s Commanders whom, he claimed, spoke to him. But he has since been denying the source he had claimed, telling the DSS, he got the information from traders in the market, and admitting he ought to have collaborated his source before going public.

But Aliyu, slamming those condemning his invitation said “Dr Mailafia lied. Are you saying he should not be invited to prove his allegations, and confirm his source? In which country in the world does that happen?”

Speaking on the background of Obasanjo’s recent submission that Nigeria has become a basket case, and was sliding  into a failed State, and had also become divisive, the former Lawmaker accused the former President of being envious of President Muhammadu Buhari.

He said instead of going public with his continuous public criticisms of the Buhari Government, he ought to have gone to speak to the President one on one, since he has an unfettered access to Buhari.

Aliyu: “He is envious that Buhari is doing the things he couldn’t do during his tenure as President. Buhari is against third term. He was for it, and bribed lawmakers to get it. Personally, I was given N250 million to support the project. Others were also given. Obasanjo should not talk of corruption. The difference is clear. Buhari has not illegally removed any Governor like he did, through illegal impeachments, or sent soldiers to go and sack communities like he did in Odi, and  Zaki Biam.”

Obasanjo’s recent statement on the state of the state of the Nation has drawn both commendation  and condemnation from across the country.

Ondo: Police Blame INEC Fire On Electrical Fault |The Source

Nigeria Police Force

By Ayodele Oni, Akure

Ondo State Police Command has released findings on last week’s fire incident which gutted a store within the premises of the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC) in Akure, consuming thousands of Card Readers meant for the October 10 Governorship Election.

In the report, the State Commissioner of Police, Bolaji Salami,  said the fire was triggered by an electrical fault.

According to him, the fire incident at the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Ondo state was caused by faulty electrical connection to where smart card readers were stored.

The Police findings, however, run contrary to the position of the opposition PDP. The party blamed it on the ruling APC, insisting it was a deliberate action to rig the election.

But the the CP, while dousing the insinuation of sabotage by opposition  parties  said there was nothing like that.

He pointed out that the Police and the state Fire Service worked together to arrive at the conclusion.

The fire incident, which happened last week, gutted  a container within the premises of Akure office of INEC destroying over 5,000 card readers.

The card readers were among materials needed for the conduct of October 10 Governorship election in the state.

The Commission has however assured that the election will still hold as scheduled.

Ondo State Governor, and candidate of the APC, Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN, on a visit to scene of the incident, promised to help INEC ameliorate its loss.  But oppsition Parties have decried the gesture, telling him he had no business helping INEC since he is a candidate in the October 10 election.
