By Our Reporters

With the official declaration of Edo Governorship election results, Governor Godwin Obaseki,  candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, incumbent Governor Godwin Obaseki, has crushed his estranged political godfather,  Adams Oshiomhole, very badly.

Obaseki, with a total vote of  307, 955 votes, to  APC candidate’s Pastor    Osagie Ize-Iyamu’s 223,  619 won decisively, the Governorship  election. He won in ourightly in 14 LGA’s, and did quite well in the remaining four.  Obaseki is led with an overwhelming majority – over 83,000 votes.

Obaseki was the preferred candidate of Oshiomhole to succeed him in 2016. But two years later, they fell out irretrievably.

Oshiomhole led the battle to force Obaseki out of the APC, when the party, unbelievably, denied him a second term ticket.

Oshiomhole preferred a candidate he had ran down and rejected in 2016, Ize-Iyamu, to Obaseki.

The result was a change in positions, with Obaseki flying the PDP ticket and, Ize-Iyamu, who had flown the PDP party in 2016, now flying the APC ticket.

Godwin Muzari

By Adesina Soyooye

Tragedy has struck the Herald Newspapers, Ilorin Kwara state, and the Nigeria Media.

One of its Editors, Godwin Muzari, committed suicide on Friday, September 18.

Herald is published by the Kwara State Government. Muzari was its Entertainment Editor, till his sudden death.

His body was found dangling from the ceiling in one of the rooms in his apartment.

Apparently, the late Editor had been having issues which bordered on depression.

According to the Editor-in-Chief of the Newspaper, Mr H. Zenanga, the late Editor had been off from work for sometime, but surfaced for two days – Monday and Tuesday – and never came again until Friday when the office heard of his sad death.

Before then, he said one of the sisters of the late Editor had told him that that her brother needed counselling, and that the process for counselling him was already in progress, before he committed suicide.

“Our Newsroom will be poorer without him”, the Editor-in-Chief lamented.

Muzari’s elder brother, Bishop Muzari, said he spoke to his late younger brother last on Moday, but never heard from him again until Friday when he saw his dangling body. He revealed that when they spoke last, the late Editor had complained about some personal and other issues generally, but that he never thought they could lead to suicide.

Having not heard from him, Bishop Muzari said he went to his late brother’s house to visit him, only to be confronted with his dangling dead body.

Muzari left behind a wife, and three children.

It is not clear where his wife and children were when he, allegedly, took his life.

Godwin Obaseki

By Our Reporters

A few days ago, nobody could have imagined that Godwin Obaseki, incumbent Governor, PDP candidate, in the just concluded Governorship Election would win. The propaganda was much. The campaign nasty. And crude.

But Obaseki not only won, it was a landslide.

He won outrightly in 14 out of the 18 Local Government

Areas of the state, with a wide margin of over 83, 000 votes.

The Independent National Electoral  Commission declared him winner, just before 3.00pm, Sunday.

The election was held on Saturday, September 10.

A reliable source from Benin say that APC bigwigs, who had converged in Benin, seeing the handwriting on the wall, quickly rushed to the Benin Airport, boarded a chartered aircraft, even before the winner was declared, and left for Abuja.

Obaseki won a total of 307, 955 votes to Ize-Iyamu’s 223, 619 votes.

The total votes cast were 550,242 votes.

Breaking; Edo: Obaseki Leads By Wide Margin; As Oshiomhole Knocks Out Shaibu |The Source

By Our Reporters

The candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, and incumbent Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has opened a wide lead in the just concluded Edo Governorship Election.

At the time of this report, the results of 13 Local Government Areas, out of 18 LGAs, have been released. Obaseki has won in 11 of them while Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the All Progressives Congress, APC, won in two.

He is leading with a margin of 63, 313 votes.

Both candidates and their running mates won in all their wards. But the most striking was at the ward of former National Chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomhole where he won in style.

Oshiomhole confirmed his electoral supremacy over everybody, and especially,  Deputy Governor/ Obaseki’s running mate, Philip Shaibu, by picking all the votes there were to pick, leaving Shaibu with zero votes.

Oshiomhole went on to deliver the Estako LGA, where both he and Shaibu hall from, to the APC. The APC polled 26, 240 to PDP’s 17,959.

Ize-Iyamu’s running mate also hails from the same LGA.

Shaibu had boasted that he would deliver the LGA to the PDP in a landslide, and defeat Oshiomhole in his ward.

The few skirmishes during the election, notwithstanding, and considering the heated tempo and bad blood leading to the election proper, there was relative peace.

It had kicked off on a shaky note with both Governor Obaseki and Oshiomhole, decrying the  pace of voting due to the slow functioning of the machines. It took Obaseki 90 minutes before he could vote.

…Details later, as this is a developing story.

Ondo: ZLP’s Agboola Ajayi Flags Off Campaign After Botched Attempt To Stop Him |The Source

Agboola Ajayi Joins ZLP

By Ayodele Oni, Akure

A last minute barricade of the road leading to the flag off of his Governorship campaign of Zenith Labour Party, (ZLP)  flag bearer, almost marred the event on Saturday.

Governorship candidate of ZLP and deputy governor of Ondo state, Mr Agboola Ajayi, had opted for Ore Township after being denied of the use of the Democracy Park in Akure.

He was asked to pay N11 million before he could use the event centre, in Akure, named after the  late MKO Abiola as against the N5 million usually charged for the  Centre.

The ZLP candidate thereafter relocated to Ore, in Odigbo local government for the flag off ceremony.

However on his way going to the venue with his entourage, he was held up in traffic for almost four hours, caused by blockade of the highway in Ondo town with a trailer.

After series of pleadings from former Governor Olusegun Mimiko, a chieftain of ZLP fell on deaf ears, efforts were made to contact incumbent Governor Rotimi Akeredolu who intervened before the trailer was removed from the highway.

It was learnt that the articulated vehicle was used to block the highway by people suspected to be members of the All Progressives Congress ,(APC).

Addressing supporters at the rally, Ajayi declared that he’s the most qualified candidate to occupy the seat of government in the state.

“I am a home-based politician. I am familiar with the challenges of our people. I am the most qualified to be the governor of Ondo State.

“The person who said I am a neophyte does not know the meaning of the word. I had served as a councillor, local government chairman, a member of the House of Representatives.

“I live among my people and feel what they feel. I am the most qualified to rescue them from the misrule and hardship they have been subjected to by the present administration in the state.”

Assuring parents and students that he would review downward tuitions of all state-owned tertiary institutions, Agboola said the maximum any student would pay would be N50,000.

He dismissed the N10,000 reduction in tuitions announced by the All Progressives Congress gubernatorial candidate, Mr. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, as a ruse, saying he(Akeredolu) was jolted by the promise by ZLP to review downward tuitions of higher institutions owned by the state.

“We will make Ondo civil service work because we have brilliant sons and daughters. We are going to design Civil Service Revolving Financial Scheme, which would provide the opportunity for workers in the state to access loans to build houses.

Lamenting the lingering power supply problem in the Southern Senatorial District of the state, the ZLP candidate assured that if he’s voted in as the governor of the state, he would fix the power problem within one hundred days in office and restore power supply in the district.

In his address, a former Governor of the state and national leader of ZLP, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, urged the people of the state to collect the money offer by people who plan to buy the votes, and still go ahead to vote for ZLP.

He described the deputy governor as the most qualified among all 17 candidates participating in the election.

Mimiko, therefore, urged the people to go out on the election day to cast their votes for ZLP and wait at the polling booths till they count the votes, and results announced, so that those planning to manipulate election results be checkmated.

Edo Election: Vote Buying Reigns Openly |The Source

Edo Election

Vote buying openly reigned in the just concluded Edo State Governorship election, especially in the Oredo Local Government Area. In a Mid-Day report, the Centre LSD said that voter turnout was very encouraging, but regretted that  politicians openly engaged in vote buying, and were not discouraged by anybody.

The Centre praised the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, for the early distribution of Election materials, but regretted that voting started late at some voting centres.

Following is the Centre’s report.

PREAMBLE;

The Edo States gubernatorial election held on 19th September 2020 as scheduled by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The election is being contested by a total of 14 political parties that fielded candidates amongst who are 12 males and 2 females for the election. The total number of registered voters in Edo is 2,201,534 with total PVCs collected put at 1,735,910 while 483.868 were not collected as publicized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The African Centre for Leadership, Strategy and Development (Centre LSD), as an accredited INEC domestic election observer organization, deployed a team of trained observers across the states to observe and provide factual election day reports.  The report of the Centre’s observation is presented below:

Voter Turnout
In most of the polling units visited, there was high voter turn out with young men and women, the aged, nursing mothers expressing eagerness to cast their votes.

INEC Logistics arrangement
INEC logistics arrangement was commendable. Kits and non-sensitive materials were properly arranged. But INEC officials and voting materials did not get to all the polling units visited early. Reports across the state indicated that the average time of arrival of INEC officials was about 8:30am.

Compliance with COVID-19 Protocol for Election
Being the first election to be conducted in the COVID-19 era and coupled with the rate of preparedness by INEC, most of the polling units visited did not observe the COVID-19 protocols for the election. Only a few polling units displayed hand sanitizers, very limited laser thermometer and social distancing rules were never obeyed by the electorates.

Accreditation and voting process:
Set up was concluded before 9.00 am in 70% of the polling units visited across the State. The Polling Officers before commencement of voting informed the voters that accreditation and voting will take place simultaneously. The exercise was scheduled to end once the last person on the queue was accredited. Elderly people, pregnant women, and nursing mothers were given consideration during the accreditation and voting process. However, in Ward 12, Polling Unit 23 (Iwegie 1 Agbado primary School in Oredo LGA), accreditation did not commence until about 10:30am. In Ward 6 (Ivbioto/Asologun Primary School, Ikpoba-Okha LGA) voters register were being pasted as at 9:30am.

Vote Buying:
In Oredo LGA, Ward 12, (Iwegie 1 Primary School Agbado) with 11 polling Units, there were observable cases of open vote buying inside the voting areas while outside the gate of Adesuwa primary school voters were being induced with money in less than 20metres distance to the Police. In Ward 11, at Iguodala Primary School most voters were showing their ballot papers to party agents in order to collect N5,000 for vote cast. While in Ward 11, Unit 4 Igbanke East, Orhionwon LGA, between N3,000 and N5,000 was being shared to voters.

Security of the process:
The Nigeria Police Force had initially reported the deployment of about 31,000 personnel to maintain law and order in Edo State, there were atleast 3 policemen in most of the polling units visited alongside other security agents while a good number of them were seen at the check points within the state capital. Beyond this, as the voting processes progressed in some of the locations, armed men in security outfits moved from polling units to polling units ensuring law and order.

Functionality of the Card Reader
The card readers in most of the polling units worked perfectly and without challenge. The card reader read most of the Permanent Voters Card (PVC) presented and authenticated their fingerprints. The INEC officials were knowledgeable in the operation of the card readers and were able to manage the process. However, in Ward 7, Polling unit 4 (Umley Adesuwa primary school, Oredo LGA), there was a reported case of battery running out of power and can lead to delay in the voting process. In Polling unit 5 of the same location, there was a case of a voter wanting to vote using his card which had earlier been transferred to another location.

Challenges:

  1. Some challenges observed in the early stages of the election were:
  2. Absence of facility for physically challenged persons.
  3. Over concentrated/crowded polling units in majority of the wards visited.
  4. Late arrival of INEC personnel and materials in some locations.
  5. Vote buying within and outside voting areas.

Recommendation;
Based on the challenges observed above, Centre LSD team recommends the following:

  1. The peculiar mobility needs of people with disabilities should be considered when selecting the locations of polling units.
  2. INEC should make deliberate efforts to improve on its logistics and ensure that she adheres to the time scheduled for electoral processes.
  3. There is an urgent need for an electoral reform that takes cognizance of electronic voting in the face of COVID-19 pandemic.
  4. There is need for decentralization of polling units within the wards to enable reduce the challenges of contracting COVID-19 and overcrowding at the polling units.

Conclusion
INEC deserves commendation for making improvements in certain areas, particularly; the provision of braille for voters with visual impairment, training of polling officials in managing the electoral process, and the distribution of kits and non-sensitive materials. However, the commission should make efforts to address the challenges mentioned above.

Breaking: Edo: Obaseki Laments ‘Rigging’ After Wike’s Brush With IGP |The Source

By Tosin Olatokunbo

Casting his vote early today in the Edo state governorship Election Governor Godwin Obaseki has issued a very scathing remark against the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC for the shoddy conduct of the election across the state.

The state helmsman who’s squared up against the candidate of the All Progressive Congress, Pastor Oasgie Ize-Iyamu in the make or mar election observed, while speaking with journalists after casting his vote at Polling Unit 19, Ward 4, Oredo Local Government Area, that the situation could lead to disenfranchisement of many PDP supporters who are trying to vote for him.

The state governor complained bitterly of card readers, which he said are not functioning as expected and could slow down voting in his strongholds.

Obaseki said “I expected that INEC would have prepared better for this election. I waited for one and half hour on the queue before exercising my franchise, it’s a bit disappointing.

“Giving that this is a sole day election, I expected better planning for this election. Card readers were very slow and that’s the situation everywhere.”

His opponent in the APC had earlier voted and commended the election to be very smooth.

Meanwhile, the controversy which broke out yesterday between Rivers state governor, Nyesom Wike and the Nigerian Police Force, NPF, after the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu directed the governor to leave the state  has yet to settle.

The Rivers governor is the Chairman of the PDP Campaign Committee for the crucial election and had on Friday relocated to the state alongside other governors from the party to monitor the election.

Both Governors Hope Uzodinma of Imo state and Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano state are also in the state inn their positions as Chairman and Deputy Chairman of APC Campaign for the election of Pastor Ize Iyamu.

But while speaking with Channels Television Friday, Governor Wike said he rebuffed the IGP order, because he was on a working visit to the state in his position as Chairman of PDP Campaign Committee for the election of Governor Obaseki.

Governor Wike had earlier warned PDP supporters in the state to defend their votes against alleged plot of the ruling party to rig the election in favor of its candidate.

Fraudsters Invade Lagos, Promote Branded Waste Baskets In Govt’s Name |The Source

Tunji Bello

By Akinwale Kasali

A viral Video, promoting the sale of branded wastebaskets, on behalf of the Lagos State Government, has been denied by the Government.

The LASG said it had nothing to do either with the branded waste basket, or its promotion.

A statement signed by the State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tunji Bello, noted that all the characters in the viral video are fraudsters who do not represent the State Government or any of its agencies.

Bello affirmed that there is no unit or agency under the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources that goes by the name “Lagos State Vehicle Waste Basket (LAVWAB) Enforcement/Compliance” as portrayed in the branded vehicle which the fraudsters operated from.

He pointed out that the dubious intent of the criminals in the video could be deduced from the fact that they operated from inside a van within an automobile workshop and were very dodgy about the kind of enforcement exercise they were supposedly carrying out.

While noting that the State Government had always encouraged all buses, trucks and articulated vehicles to provide waste baskets in their vehicles to discourage littering of the roads and streets, Bello maintained that the present administration has never recommended any branded wastebasket to Lagosians.

The Commissioner said the development has been communicated to security agents to spread their dragnets towards apprehending the criminals and their cohorts, wherever they operated from, and bring them to book.

Bello, therefore, enjoined members of the public to report any incident of anyone claiming to represent the State Government, and coercing them to purchase any particular brand of wastebaskets for placement in their vehicles.

The Commissioner, also, implored owners and operators of buses, trucks and articulated vehicles in the State to continue to use wastebaskets of their choice in their vehicles, as part of efforts to discourage littering and promoting a culture of proper waste disposal.

It also advised Lagosians not to fall prey to any Fraudsters promoting such.
