AFCON 2025: Naira Rain For Super Eagles As It Faces Mambas In Round 16 Encounter

The Super Eagles has been inspired by the Official Partners of the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, which has promised a $10,000 (approximately ₦14 million) Bonus for every goal scored in their Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, Round of 16 encounter against the Mambas of Mozambique.

The same partner had earlier rewarded the team with $5,000 per goal during the group stage, a bonus structure that has now been doubled for the knockout phase.

Mallam Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission, confirmed the development while addressing journalists in Rabat.

“We have fully mobilized the Super Eagles to succeed in this tournament,” Dikko said. “On the part of the Federal Government, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the AFCON Intervention Fund on November 14.

“In addition, our partners and sponsors paid $5,000 per goal in the group stage and have now committed $10,000 per goal for the Round of 16. The incentives will continue to improve as the tournament progresses.”

The Super Eagles of Nigeria are confident of reaching the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations after been in prolific form at the Championship, winning all its Three Group Games against the Taifas of Tanzania, Carthage Eagles of Tunisia and the Cranes of Uganda.

It is however gunning for its 18th time Quarter Finals appearance when they engage Mozambique in Monday night’s Round of 16 tie at the Complexe Sportif de Fès.

The Super Eagles have the record of most medals in the 69-year-old flagship football tournament of the African continent, viz three triumphs (gold medals), five runner-up positions (silver medals) and eight bronze acquisitions.

The only three times they failed to reach the quarter-finals were at their debut in Ghana in 1963, at the 13th edition in Libya in 1982, and in Cameroon four years ago.

Ghana 2008 was the only time they crashed out at the quarter-final stage. Otherwise, every time they had gone past the first knockout round, they had picked up a medal.

Monday’s encounter against history-making Mambas (they have reached the knockout stage for the first time ever) promises a thrilling contest with Coaches Eric Chelle and Chiquinho Conde preferring to keep tactics, strategies and patterns to their chests.

Nigeria swept to three wins out of three, eight goals for and four against, and reflected a formidable set-up in the group phase, which earned Coach Chelle the mantle of Coach of the Group Phase.

However, against third-placed Mozambique, the three-time champions must be extra-cautious, as a similar third-placed Tunisia bumped them in the same stage in Garoua four years ago.

The Mambas, who famously defeated the Panthers of Gabon either side of defeats to Cup-holders Cote d’Ivoire and five-time champions Cameroon in Group F, look like a team capable of upturning apple carts that are not properly positioned.

Conde can bank on defenders Nené, Bruno Langa and Reinildo Mandava to hold the rear tight, and midfielders Domingues (team captain) and João Bonde to feed the foreline of Chamito and Faisal Bangal, and try to catch Nigeria pants down.

Yet, Coach Chelle, who is driven by his own admission of having imbibed the truism that “Nigerians want their team to win every game,” is committed to putting out a structure that will see the Eagles defend with resolution and attack with panache.

Victor Osimhen who is currently on 32 goals in 49 matches for country, is expected to lead the onslaughts once more.

Team Captain, Wilfred Ndidi and midfielders Alex Iwobi are sure to return after taking a rest for the clash with Uganda, as will centre-back Semi Ajayi, wing-back Bright Osayi-Samuel and forward Ademola Lookman.

Coach Chelle, in admitting that the Eagles must forget the excellent job done in the group stage and get into knockout-phase mode in order to avoid a sucker punch, said: “We will not get ahead of ourselves and think we are the best. We will continue to work hard and stay focused for every match as it comes.”

Immediate past African Player of the Year, Ademola Lookman, who has scored twice and provided two assists so far in the tournament, spoke of his selection in the group phase’s Best IX: “Yeah, we had a great run in the group stage and I am thankful to all that voted. The selection is not just for me, but my entire team-mates, because their efforts on the pitch contributed to my selection.

“However, this is not the vision for our team. We have set targets to accomplish here in Morocco and we are nowhere near our targets yet.”

The Confederation of African Football, CAF, has selected Cameroonian official Abdou Abdel Mefir as referee for Monday night’s encounter, with his compatriots Elvis Noupoue and Carine Atezambong as assistants.

Following the arrest of the President of Venezuela, Nicholas Madhura by the United States Military on the orders of President Donald Trump, the leader of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Primate Elijah Ayodele, has cautioned President Bola Tinubu of a plot by Trump to remove him from office.

Primate Ayodele claims Trump’s plan is to “cage” Tinubu and eventually oust him, using US support for Nigeria’s fight against insecurity as a means to infiltrate the government.

The controversial Clergyman said Trump is adamant on removing President Tinubu.

Primate Elijah Ayodele: Cautioned President Bola Tinubu of a plot by Trump to remove him from office.

“America will be part of those who will be against Tinubu,” Ayodele stated.

The cleric emphasized that despite US assistance, Nigeria will continue to combat insecurity, but Trump’s true intention is not to end violence in the country, but to use that as a way of infiltrating our Security Apparatus.

“Nigeria will still continue to fight insecurity, but either they fight it or not, Trump is focused on removing Tinubu from office,” Ayodele warned.

He urged President Tinubu to take bold political steps to counter Trump’s alleged plans, advising him to “take a very bold step to overcome Trump’s plan  because he has caged him already.

The All Progressives Congress, (APC), has consolidated its control over the Rivers State Executive Council with the defection of the Deputy governor, Prof Ngozi Odu to the party.

The Deputy Governor officially announced her defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Her defection comes roughly a month after Governor Siminalayi Fubara and a majority of the State’s  Lawmakers made the same switch, ending weeks of speculation regarding her political alignment.

Addressing stakeholders, during a tour of the six zones in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area, Dr. Odu confirmed she had completed her formal entry into the ruling party.

“I have completed my registration formalities at Akabuka, Ward 8, Unit 11,” she announced.

The Deputy Governor emphasized that her decision was aimed at creating a unified front in support of both the federal and state administrations.

She encouraged residents of the Orashi region to participate in the ongoing electronic registration process.

“The move is to further strengthen the support base of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Siminalayi Fubara, noting that six zonal meetings had already been held to facilitate the actualisation of the plan,” Odu stated.

Prof. Odu highlighted the enthusiastic reception she received across the various zones, including Egi, Omoku, Osomini, Igburu, Egbema, and Ndoni, noting that the people appear ready to follow the current leadership’s new direction.

“Today, I came to sensitise the people, and everywhere we went, there were large crowds who came out to receive us.

“They said wherever I go, they will go with me, and wherever Governor Fubara and President Tinubu go, they will go. You can see the joy and happiness. I have touched all the six zones — Egi, Omoku, Osomini, Igburu, Egbema and Ndoni,” she added.

This development has effectively further isolated the faction loyal to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, who remains in the PDP despite serving in President Tinubu’s cabinet.

New Tax Law: NRS Boss Says Mob Action Imminent; Security Agencies Must Be On Alert

0
FIRS Boss Zaccheus Adedeji

The Executive Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service, formerly the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Zacch Adedeji, has asked security agencies to be on alert over planned nationwide protests against the new tax law.

Controversy has surrounded the tax law which came to effect on January 1, 2026, with many civil society groups, opposition political parties, business leaders and some lawmakers in the National Assembly calling on the Tinubu administration to postpone its implementation, particularly following reports that the document may have been doctored.

The Presidency has denied the allegation, saying the reactions were unnecessary.

Speaking, Adedeji accused some people in the country of trying to frustrate the tax law, saying the new tax regime will benefit the country.

“I’m using this time to call all the security agencies to be on alert,” he said in an interview on Arise Television on Sunday., stressing that the reform was for the interest of the poor, but was being frustrated by some persons.

“These are the people… that just want to frustrate the benefit of this reform,” Adedeji declared. He warned that those pushing anti-tax agitations are unpatriotic elements determined to derail the country’s fiscal reforms.

“Those people you see promoting all this rumour, all this misinformation are those people that are avoiding taxes, that there is no way out for, based on the digitalisation that we brought on board,” he said.

Adedeji said tax reform was a clear campaign promise of President Bola Tinubu and a necessary response to what he described as a fragmented tax system that could not sustain the level of development the President envisaged.

“Tax reform is one of the promises made by Mr President from his inaugural speech,” he said. “From the beginning, he made it his point of duty that we need to start early to reform the tax system, which is the real foundation for any sustainable economy in the world.”

He recalled that the President set up a committee headed by Taiwo Oyedele, which, according to him, spent a year consulting stakeholders and preparing recommendations that were then processed by the National Assembly through public hearings and regional engagements before the President assented to the bill in June 2024.

Responding to claims by some lawmakers and commentators that the gazetted version of the Nigeria Tax Administration and Other Matters Act differed from what was passed by the National Assembly, Adedeji dismissed the allegations as baseless.

“No, like I said earlier, I don’t want to delve into those rumours,” he said. “For example, all these comparisons that you are mentioning now, honestly, I don’t know where you find them because nobody, except the National Assembly, has the right to the vote book. They are the ones to give us the gazetted law as passed, which… they’ve released… as passed, which is the only thing we have.”

He insisted that the only document relevant to the NRS is the gazetted Act transmitted by the legislature.

“I don’t even need to see the harmonised bill. I don’t need to see any of those things,” he said. “The only thing I need to see is the gazetted bill, which they have given to me. All these processes are internal processes of the National Assembly, which is purely a separation of powers.”

Adedeji stressed that the tax authorities had no role in altering any legislation and said the executive had “no place in the law” to tamper with bills passed by parliament. He also clarified that while the law took effect from June, some rate changes were delayed to give companies time to adjust.

He framed the reform as an attempt to create fairness rather than increase the tax burden.

“In one summary, the whole essence of reform is to tax right, not tax more,” he said. “We just want to tax right, fairness, transparency, and then consolidate the whole system in order to simplify and unify the process of revenue administration.”

He said the administration would focus on taxing profits and prosperity rather than capital and poverty, insisting that the poor are the biggest beneficiaries of the reform due to exemptions on basic consumption.

“If you look at all the exemptions, you will discover that more than 95 per cent of the poor are totally exempted,” he claimed. “Imagine that we remove VAT on all food items… The same thing on transportation… So if you look at the total and the net benefit, the poor are the most beneficiaries of this tax reform.”

On complaints that bank transfer charges and VAT deductions are rising, he said many of the grievances blamed on the federal reform are either bank charges or state-level personal income taxes, adding that the NRS mainly administers company taxes.

He also denied reports that the government now monitors individual bank transfers, saying, “Narration or whatever, it’s just misinformation. There is nothing about that in the tax law.”

On the requirement for banks to report large lodgements, he said the thresholds predated the new law and did not mean that every large transaction would be taxed, while the reform of minimum tax showed that the government did not intend to tax capital.

He also defended the memorandum of understanding with France on digital taxation, saying Nigeria was not exposing taxpayer information to foreign authorities.

Turning to the restructuring of the Federal Inland Revenue Service into the Nigeria Revenue Service, he said the change represented an institutional overhaul, not a cosmetic rebranding. According to him, six months of preparatory work went into integrating systems and building technological capacity.

“Most of those manual activities that encourage human intervention have been removed totally,” he said. “A dedicated department is now for technology because we know the future actually belongs to those data-driven organisations.”

He acknowledged there could be operational challenges but said, “Even if there will be glitches, there are challenges, we have a contingency plan because we are administrators.”

Addressing distrust over government revenue use, Adedeji said reforms were already improving fuel supply and state finances, adding: “If you go to states now, go and see how much states collected before, how much they are collecting now… I’m very sure this year, 2026, people will feel more of the impact of the government.”

He rejected claims that the tax regime could be used to target opposition figures ahead of the 2027 elections, insisting the President was acting in the national interest.

On the threat of protests by student groups and opposition parties, Adedeji warned that the law could not be suspended through street action and asked security agencies to remain alert.

“So when people say they want to suspend the law, does that mean the whole law has been repealed?” he asked, “We subscribe ourselves to democracy where there are rules of law. So no individual, except in an emergency, can suspend the law. The law passed by the National Assembly is law.”

“When you see the group of people, they say, ‘Oh, this is what we want to see.’ They have never read the law,” he added. “Let them read the law, and how does the law affect them. And they should wait for the results, not mass or mob action.”

2027: Bury The Thought, Obi Will Not Be Running Mate To Atiku- Spokesman

Peter Obi US Lecture

Presidential hopeful, Peter Obi is not gunning for the position of vice president, according to Dr Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide.

The former Labour Party, LP, Presidential candidate, will, therefore, not accept to be presidential running mate in the African Democratic Congress, ADC, the Obidient spokesperson said, according to The Punch.

Speculations have been rife in the country that the former Anambra state governor has accepted to be the running mate to Atiku Abubakar, a former vice president, who, according to political analysts is poised to secure the ADC presidential ticket for the 2027 Presidential election.

Obi and Abubakar had recently joined the ADC after defecting from their respective political parties, the LP and PDP.

Obi had recently debunked the rumour that he has accepted to be Abubakar’s running mate again, having done same during the 2019 presidential election. According to him, he has come too far to play the second fiddle, saying he only has interest in becoming the President and Commander-in-chief.

Reinforcing Obi’s position, Dr Yunusa said the option in not on the table for the former Anambra governor.

“We have never put that on the table. Obi is running for the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. No more, no less. There is no discussion or anything related to him becoming a VP, and we have already released a statement to that effect,” Tanko said.

Recall that Obi shattered expectations during the 2023 presidential election, securing over six million votes, in the election won by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, APC. The former governor, though came a distant third, insists he won the election, even though the court had ruled otherwise.

PDP Chieftain To Tinubu: Trump Coming For You If You Rig 2027 Election

0
Donald Trump and Bola Tinubu

Dr. Adetokunbo Pearse, a Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, chieftain has warned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to forget rigging the 2027 election in the country, warning that the global community, particularly, the United States President Donald Trump will capture him if he involves in electoral fraud.

The PDP chieftain spoke on Arise Television on Sunday, saying electoral malpractice is no longer acceptable globally, adding that the era of unchecked election rigging is coming to and end.

Pearse spoke following the capture of Venezuela President Nichola Maduro by US Special Forces last week. The Venezuela’s leader alongside his wife was captured in their home in Caracas, the Capital after sporadic attack by the US forces who launched the attack in the wee hours of Friday.

President Trump, the magazine reports, had accused Maduro of narco-terrorism, drug trafficking and for ruling his people with iron fist. The last Presidential election in the country in 2024, was believed to have been won by the opposition leader, Maria Corina Machado, but Maduro forced himself on the country, according to close watchers of the country’s politics.

The capture Venezuela’s leader will now  be charged in the US court for drug related charges.

Drawing a parallel between Venezuela and Nigeria, Pearse said election rigging is now abnormal in global politics, saying the international community is watching to see how the Tinubu administration will handle the upcoming general election in the country.

“The whole international world is watching. If you rig the election the way you normally do, you may have Trump coming to get your war chambers. Everybody should be careful.”

He said past elections in the country have been rigged by politicians, noting that accountability is now being demanded for electoral misconduct  by the global community.

He said: “This is not the first time it has happened. The International Criminal Court is there, so be careful what you do with a rigged election in Nigeria

“No, no, no — it will not happen again. 2027 is going to be different.”

Niger: Obi Calls For End To Terror Attacks, Killings

Presidential hopeful of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Peter Obi, has urged the federal government to take serious, the protection of lives of Nigerians, saying this “must remain the foremost responsibility of government.”

According to the 2023 Labour Party Presidential candidate, the federal government must rein in the terrorists killing Nigerians, adding that a situation where people are being killed must not be accepted to be normal.

Obi who made the remark on Sunday on his verified X handle was reacting to the killings of some persons by terrorists in Niger state, describing the situation to be “deeply worrisome” and unacceptable.

No fewer than 30 people were killed when terrorists attacked a village market in Kabe District, Borgu Local Government Area of the state, according to eyewitness report.

The terror attack also  saw shops torched, goods looted and dozens of residents abducted.

He stressed that the security agencies must wake up to their duty by putting an end to the cycle of senseless killings in the country in the new year.

Obi: “It is deeply worrisome and unacceptable that, as we usher in a new year, the cycle of senseless killings and insecurity continues unchecked across our nation. Today, in Niger State, we once again witnessed the horrific loss of over 40 lives in a brutal terrorist attack at the Kasuwan-Daji Market in the Domo community of Borgu Local Government Area.

“Just yesterday, armed bandits struck Bong village in Doemak District of Plateau State, leaving multiple people dead. Two days ago, several communities in Shanono Local Government Area of Kano State were attacked by bandits. On New Year’s Day in Katsina State, the Unguwar Naino community was also attacked, with several lives lost and many others injured.

“These incidents form part of a disturbing and tragic pattern of violence that has sadly become normalized. The repeated failure to provide basic security for citizens is a national shame, and the toll it takes on families and communities is immeasurable. As a nation, we cannot continue to normalize these killings. The protection of lives must remain the foremost responsibility of government.

“What Nigerians urgently need is an all-hands-on-deck approach: a coordinated, capable, and decisive effort to end the menace of insecurity that has become a daily occurrence.

“To the families who have lost loved ones in Niger, Plateau, Kano, Katsina, and other affected communities this New Year, no words can truly ease your pain. Know, however, that the nation mourns with you. May you find strength, comfort, and resilience in this time of unimaginable grief. This cycle of violence must be stopped,” Obi said.

Meanwhile, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in a statement on Sunday,  directed the Minister of Defence, the Chief of Defence Staff, the Service Chiefs, the Inspector-General of Police and the Director-General of the Department of State Services to find the perpetrators of the attack and bring them to justice.

Tinubu:“These terrorists have tested the resolve of our country and its people. They must face the full consequences of their criminal actions.

“No matter who they are or what their intent is, they must be hunted down. In addition, those who aid, abet or enable them will also be brought to justice.”

“Not only have @officialABAT and @Hope_Uzodinma 1thrown you under the bus, the keys of the bus were handed over to @SimFubaraKSC.

“How he drives the bus depends on how much of your pride you can swallow.

“Now, let me break it down for you.

“Fubara may get back the six months you and Pres Tinubu stole from him.

“Then Fubara will get a second term.

“Fubara will nominate your replacement before the end of 2026.

“Fubara is your new Godfather”.
