Update: How My Aide Killed A Vendor – Gbajabiamila; Suspends Officer |The Source

A Newspaper Vendor Shot by Gbajabiamila Convoy

By Akinwale Kasali

A trigger-happy policeman, attached to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, on Thursday in Abuja, shot dead, Ifeanyi Okereke,  a Newspaper Vendor.

Okereke, it is reported, was a victim of gun shots into the air by the Speaker’s aide to disperse some people who were coming around, apparently  to see the Speaker , after Gbajabiamila stopped to exchange greetings with the vendors.

It is not known why the Speaker stopped to greet the newspaper vendors, but he explained it away as a habit he formed since he moved to Abuja as a House of Representatives member. The Vendors usually stay by the gate of the National Assembly.

Confirming the unfortunate incident  in a series of tweets,  the Speaker, wrote:

“A horrible incident has taken place. This evening as I left the National  Assembly , I stopped,  as usual, to exchange pleasantries with the newspaper vendors at the corner. Many of them have known me since I first moved to Abuja and it was a friendly exchange.

“Unfortunately, after the convoy set out in continuation of movement, unidentified men obstructed the convoy which got the attention of security men in the convoy who shot into the air to disperse them.

“Some hours later, after getting to our destination, it was brought to my attention that someone was hit by a stray bullet, contrary to an earlier report by men in the convoy that they applied their security discretion to shoot in the air.

“I have caused a report to be made to the local police station and an investigation has commenced.

“In the meantime; the officer who fired the fatal shot has been suspended from the convoy pending the conclusion of the investigation.

“My value for human life and my respect for all people – irrespective of social economic status – is what endeared me to these vendors and these are the reasons why I stop my convoy quite often to connect with them. For one of them to have been shot by my security detail is horrific and I cannot begin to imagine the grief and loss Ifeanyi’s family must feel on this sad day. No family should have to go through this.

“I am personally distraught about this incident and my deepest sympathies go to the victim, his family and Abuja vendors”.

Ondo: Organized Labour Stings Gov Akeredolu With Strike |The Source

Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State
Rotimi Akeredolu

By Ayodele Oni

Just a few days after it carpeted an Aide to Ondo state Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu over unguarded utterances, the Organized Labour has given the state government eight days, beginning  from Thursday,  to settle workers’ accumulated salaries and deductions.

In the alternative or failure to comply, the state government should expect the workers’ wrath  –  a long drawn  industrial action.

Investigation revealed that government is yet to pay  October salary and six months deductions, which have affected various cooperative societies in the state public service and tertiary institutions.

Organized Labour, which includes the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC), called on government to urgently convene a meeting with the Labour leaders on,  or before friday August 27.

This is  to enable the state government  discuss how to pay the outstanding salaries and allowances.

The warning was contained in a letter addressed to the governor and signed by the state Chairmen and Secretaries of NLC, TUC and JNC, Sunday Adeleye-Oluwole, Helen Odofin, Niyi Fabunmi; Omokehinde Shado, Tajudeen Balogun and Kehinde Olomiye respectively.

The Labour unions pointed out that the state government had failed to honour various previous agreements reached  over their demands on salaries and deductions payment.

Early in the week, the labour group had written to the Governor over unsubstantiated allegations by one of his Aides who accused teachers in public schools of using students for personal domestic duties.

It warned that the action of the Aide could trigger frosty  industrial relationship  between the labour and the  state government.

FG Says Lekki Toll Gate Was A Massacre Without Blood, Slams DJ Switch, CNN |The Source

0
Alhaji Lai Mohammed

The Federal Government says it has no plans to ban the Social Media. The FG insists it would, instead, regulate it, blaming the activities of the Social Media’s disinformation for the violence and deaths that accompanied the #EndSARS Protest.

Addressing a Press Conference in  Abuja on Wednesday, the Minister for Information and National Orientation, Lai Mohammed, said the Lekki Toll incident which took place on October  20, would go down in history  as the first massacre with neither blood nor body.

Mohammed insisted that the Soldiers deployed to Lekki, as they were to other parts of Lagos, fired blank and killed nobody.

He challenged anybody, including DJ Switch, to make public the names of those killed, and urged families who lost anybody at the Lekki Toll Gate to come forward. It is fake, he declared.

The Minister also chided the Cable News Network, CNN, for allowing itself to be deceived into broadcasting fake news, arguing that the medium needs to live up to its name. The CNN has, said it stood by its story.

Justifying the sanction of five million Naire each, meted out on three Television Stations – Arise, Channels, AIT – the Minister said they deserved a harsher punishment than they got.

Following is the full text of Minister Lai Mohammed’s  Press Conference.

” It’s no longer news that the EndSARS protest last month degenerated into mindless violence after it was hijacked by hoodlums. In the aftermath of the protest, however, there are lingering issues, hence this press conference to take a holistic look at such issues.

“Before we delve into those issues, let’s look at the demand of the EndSARS protesters, whose campaign was aimed at ending police brutality and disbanding the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), and the response of the Federal Government:

THE FIVE DEMANDS OF THE #ENDSARS MOVEMENT:

  1. i) Immediate release of all arrested protesters.
  2. ii) Justice for all deceased victims of police brutality and

appropriate compensation for their families.

iii)     Setting up an independent body to oversee the investigation and

prosecution of all reports of police misconduct within 10 days.

  1. iv) In line with the new Police Act, psychological evaluation and

retraining (to be confirmed by an independent body) of all disbanded

SARS officers before they can be redeployed.

  1. v) Increase police salary so that they are adequately compensated for protecting the lives and property of citizens.

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT’S RESPONSE:

“Gentlemen, the EndSARS campaign had barely begun last month when the

Inspector-General of Police announced, on Oct. 11th 2020, the immediate disbandment of SARS across the 36 State Police Commands and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

A day later, on Oct. 12th, 2020, President Muhamadu Buhari addressed the nation, stating: ”The disbanding of SARS is only the first step in our commitment to extensive police reforms in order to ensure that the primary duty of the police and other law enforcement agencies remains the protection of lives and livelihood of our people. We will also ensure that all those responsible for misconduct or wrongful acts are brought to justice.

“Following up quickly on that, the IGP on Oct. 13 2020, ordered all defunct SARS personnel to report at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, for debriefing as well as psychological and medical examination. The officers were to undergo this process as a prelude to further training and reorientation before being redeployed into mainstream policing duties. The medical examination was carried out by the new Police Counselling and Support Unit (PCSU).

“On Oct. 13th 2020, the presidential panel on the reform of SARS formally accepted the five-point demand of the #EndSARS protesters.

“On Oct. 15th 2020, the National Economic Council (NEC) directed the immediate establishment of State-based Judicial Panels of Inquiry across the country to receive and investigate complaints of police brutality or related extra-judicial killings, with a view to delivering justice for all victims of the dissolved SARS and other police units. The panel will include representatives of Youths, Students, Civil Society Organizations and would be chaired by a respected retired State High Court Judge. The panels have six months to complete its assignment.

“Other decisions by NEC on the Demands:

– State Governors and the FCT Minister should take charge of interface and contact with the protesters in their respective domains.

–  State Governors should immediately establish State-based Special Security and Human Rights Committees to be chaired by the Governors in their States, and to supervise the newly-formed police tactical units and all other security agencies located in the States. This will ensure the protection of citizens’ human rights. Members will also

include Representatives of Youths and Civil Society, as well as the head of police tactical units in each of the States.

–  Establishment, by the Special Committee on Security and Human Rights, of a Human Rights Public Complaints Team of between 2 to 3 persons to receive complaints on an ongoing basis. That team would be established by the Special Committee on Security and Human Rights.

–  State Governors to immediately establish a Victims Fund to enable the payment of monetary compensation to deserving victims.

“Finally, on the Federal Government’s response, the National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission was directed to expedite action on the finalization of the new salary structure of members of the Nigeria Police Force.

“Gentlemen, you can see, from the above, that the Federal Government was not only responsive but was also very responsible in its handling of the demands of the EndSARS protesters. The five demands were met (some with an immediate pronouncement and others by kickstarting the process of meeting them). Despite this, the protest continued and the demands kept expanding, until the protest was hijacked, leading to unprecedented violence characterized by killings, maiming, arson, looting etc.

THE ROLE OF FAKE NEWS, DISINFORMATION IN THE ENDSARS VIOLENCE

“As I said earlier, what started as a peaceful protest against police brutality quickly degenerated into incredible violence despite an immediate response to the demands by the government. Keen watchers of the developments cannot fail to notice the role played by the social media in the EndSARS protest. As a veritable tool for mass mobilization, the organizers of the protest of course leveraged heavily on social media for that purpose. But on the other hand, the same social media was used to spread fake news and disinformation that catalyzed the violence that was witnessed across the country.

“This development has reinforced the campaign against fake news and disinformation, which we launched in 2018. As a matter of fact, as far back as 2017, when we dedicated that year’s National Council on Information to the issue of fake news and disinformation, we had been expressing concerns on the dangers posed by irresponsible use of the new media platform. The concerns culminated in the launch of the national campaign which I referred to earlier.

“The social media was used to guide arsonists and looters to certain properties, both public and private. Pictures of persons, including some celebrities, who were supposedly killed at the Lekki Toll Gate by soldiers, were circulated widely, only for those persons to refute such claims or for the discerning to disprove such posts. As we have said many times, no responsible government will stand by and allow such abuse of social media to continue. The fake news/disinformation purveyors have latched on to our concerns to allege that the Federal Government is planning to shut down social media. No, we have no plans to shut down the social media. What we have always advocated, and what we will do, is to regulate the social media. Nigeria is not alone in this regard. The issue of social media regulation is an ongoing debate not just in Nigeria but around the world, including in the United States, which is the flag flyer of constitutional democracy. Even the owners of the various social media platforms, including Facebook, are increasingly joining the call for content regulation.

“Some respected opinion leaders have been playing to the gallery on the issue of social media regulation by making inciting and incendiary statements, while some other individuals and groups have been threatening fire and brimstone over the issue of social media regulation. What they have failed to understand is that the only reason we are even able to have this debate is because we have a country. If we allow the abuse of social media to precipitate uncontrolled internecine violence, the kind of which was narrowly averted during the EndSARS crisis, no one will remember or be able to use Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc, for whatever purpose. It is incumbent upon us all, therefore, to strike a balance between free speech – which this Administration is committed to upholding – and fake news/disinformation, which it is determined to fight..

‘SOCIAL MEDIA MASSACRE’ AT LEKKI TOLL GATE

“While we await the Judicial Panel in Lagos to unravel what transpired at the Lekki Toll Gate, what we can say, based on testimonies available in the public space, is that the world may have just witnessed, for the very first time ever, a MASSACRE WITHOUT BODIES! Some have tagged it ‘social media massacre’. The testimony of Brig.-Gen, Ahmed Ibrahim Taiwo of the Nigerian Army before the Panel was compelling, and I am sure many of you have listened to or watched it. The highlights, for those who may not have watched the testimony, are:

– Soldiers were deployed all over Lagos, including Lekki Toll Gate, after the other security agencies were overwhelmed on Oct. 20th 2020, upon the request of the state government.

–  Before deployment, the soldiers were briefed on the Rules of Engagement, which they adhered to all through

– Soldiers at Lekki Toll Gate fired blank ammunitions into the air

–  Blank ammunition cannot do any damage to the flesh, not to talk of killing anyone

–  Firing live ammunition into the crowd, as some have alleged, would have led to mass killing, which never happened.

“Sadly, the purveyors of fake news and disinformation succeeded in deceiving the world that indeed there was mass killing in Lekki, even when, till date, not a single body has been produced and not a single family or relative has come out to say their child or ward was killed at Lekki. More surprising and irresponsible is the fact that some people have been calling for sanctions against Nigeria or against Nigerian government officials on the basis of a hoax. This is one of the dangers of fake news and disinformation. Once fake news is out, many run with it, without looking back, even when the truth is

eventually revealed. We therefore want to use this opportunity to ask those who have alleged massacre at the Lekki Toll Gate to go to the Judicial Panel to present their evidence(s) to the world or simply admit that they have goofed.

CNN’s REPORT OF KILLINGS AT THE LEKKI TOLL GATE

“Like everyone else, I watched the CNN report. I must tell you that it reinforces the disinformation that is going round, and it is blatantly irresponsible and a poor piece of journalistic work by a reputable international news organization. CNN engaged in incredible sensationalism and did a great disservice to itself and to journalism. In the first instance, CNN, which touted its report as an exclusive investigative report, sadly relied on the same videos that have been circulating on social media, without verification. This is very serious and CNN should be sanctioned for that. CNN merely said the videos were ”obtained by CNN”, without saying wherefrom and whether or not it authenticated them. Were CNN reporters and cameramen at the Lekki Toll Gate that evening? If the answer is no, on what basis were they reporting? Relying on second or third hand information and presenting it as ”CNN Investigation”? Why didn’t the CNN balance its story by showing the compelling testimony of Brig.-Gen. Taiwo before the Judicial Panel in Lagos? Is this one-sided reporting what is expected from an international media organization or any serious news organization? If CNN had done its investigation properly, it would have known how fake news and disinformation were trending during the EndSARS crisis. The BBC even did a report on this, and we recommend that report to CNN. Talking about the BBC, a reporter with the BBC’s Pidgin Service, Damilola Banjo, was at Lekki Toll Gate protest ground that night. She was quoted as saying soldiers were indeed at the Toll Gate but they shot ‘’sporadically into the air’’ and not at the protesters. CNN that was not at the scene reported otherwise.

“In airing its so-called investigative report, CNN conveniently forgot that on Oct. 23rd 2020, it tweeted, from its verified twitter handle, that the military killed 38 people when it opened fire on peaceful protesters on Tuesday, Oct. 20th 2020. Less than a month later, the same CNN, in what it called an EXCLUSIVE report based on a rehash of old, unverified videos, was only able to confirm that one person died in the same incident.

” In its jaundiced reporting, CNN was blind to the fact that six soldiers and 37 policemen were killed in unprovoked attacks. Obviously, CNN did not consider the security agents human enough. CNN, in its ‘investigation’, was blind to the wanton destruction of property in Lagos and across the country. Also, CNN was blind to the burning of police stations and vehicles all over the country. Instead, it went to town with unverified social media footages, in its desperation to prove that people were killed at the Lekki Toll Gate. Again, this is irresponsible journalism for which CNN deserves to be sanctioned. We insist that the military did not shoot at protesters at Lekki Toll Gate. They fired blank ammunition in the air. Again, anyone who knows anyone who was killed at Lekki Toll Gate should head to the Judicial Panel with conclusive evidence of such.

THE ROLE OF THE SECURITY AGENCIES

“At this point, it is important to say that the Federal Government is very satisfied with the role played by the security agencies, especially the military and the police, all through the EndSARS crisis. The security agents were professional and measured in

their response. Even when their lives were at stake, they exercised uncommon restraint. Their professionalism and measured response saved many lives and properties. For example, despite arresting hordes of looters during the violence in Lagos, the army treated them humanely and even counseled them before handing them over to the police. The same cannot be said of those who unleashed mayhem on the security agents, killing and maiming them, sometimes in such a barbaric manner that is unprecedented in these parts. As I said earlier, six soldiers and 37 policemen were killed all over the country during the crisis. This is in addition to 196 policemen who were injured; 164 police vehicles that were destroyed and 134 police stations that were razed.

“Also, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Nigeria Customs Service and Nigeria Immigration Service all lost infrastructures, equipment and other valuables to attack by hoodlums during the crisis. Eight medium security custodial centres in six

states (Edo, Lagos, Abia, Delta, Ondo and Ebonyi) were attacked, with 1,957 inmates set free and 31 staff injured.

“The Federal Government will therefore not accept a situation in which some so-called human rights bodies and jaundiced media organizations will continue to harass the security agencies over their roles during the crisis. Soldiers, policemen and other security agents deserve commendation, not condemnation, except, of course, their critics are saying they are not human beings and that their own rights do not matter. It is

depressing and demoralizing to continue to vilify men and women in uniform, who themselves were victims of senseless violence unleashed by hoodlums. The role of the human rights organizations, in particular, became suspect after they simply ignored the brutal killing and maiming of security agents during the crisis, as well as the orgy of violence that left 57 civilians dead, 269 private/corporate facilities burnt/looted/vandalized, 243 government facilities burnt/vandalized and 81 government warehouses looted, and instead continued to dwell on the bodiless and bloodless ‘massacre’ at Lekki Toll Gate. They did not see anything wrong in the public and

private properties that were burnt or looted, neither did they see anything wrong in the fact that some of the businesses that were looted belonged to struggling young men and women. All they could see in their biased view of the whole situation was a hoax massacre.

DJ SWITCH

“Still on the alleged Lekki Toll Gate massacre, one of the purveyors of fake news and disinformation   evidence she may have to the Judicial Panel, she chose to escape from the country under the pretext that her life was in danger. I ask: in danger from whom? The military has come out to say they never sought after her. To the best of our knowledge, the police never declared her wanted. Her conduct thus becomes suspect. Who is she fronting for? What is her real motive? Who are her sponsors? If she has any evidence of killings, why is she not presenting it to the Panel? If she was so desperate for asylum in any country, does she have to resort to blatant falsehood to tarnish the image of the country just to achieve her aim? In the fullness of time, this lady will be exposed for what she is, a fraud and a front for

divisive and destructive forces. At this juncture, we want to appeal to countries that have made hasty judgements on the basis of fake news and disinformation emanating from the EndSARS crisis to endeavour to seek and find the truth.

SANCTIONS ON SOME TV STATIONS

“In the aftermath of the EndSARS crisis, the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) fined three broadcast stations for using unverified and dangerous information from social media. Commentators, many of whom didn’t even know why the NBC imposed the fine, rushed to allege an attempt to stifle free speech. Unknown to them, the stations themselves know that they breached the Broadcasting Code. Two of them have paid their fines in full, while the third has paid a part of the fine, with an appeal for time to pay the balance.

“The position of the Federal Government is that not only were the fines justified, the NBC was indeed lenient. It is sad to see the traditional media jettisoning the age-long gate-keeping process and instead rushing to rely on the free-wheeling social media – devoid of any gate keeping – for news. Sadly, there is an emerging trend in which even the traditional media is freely using materials from social media without taking the pains to verify their authenticity. This is a dangerous trend that must be curbed, in the interest of the media practitioners themselves, the profession and indeed the country.

“Had the NBC wielded the big stick, some broadcast media organizations would have faced more severe sanctions than mere fines. Recall that an otherwise reputable broadcast media organization had carried a fake report that the Ecumenical Centre in Abuja was on fire during the violence that followed the protest. Though the organization in question later retracted the story, the kind of reprisal attack this could have sparked is better imagined. Also, another reputable broadcast media organization featured a report that identified a maintenance worker atop a bank building overlooking the Lekki Toll

Gate as a sniper, leading to attacks that destroyed many of the bank’s branches. The organizations have not even been sanctioned for this terrible disinformation, yet rabble rousers have latched on to the fines to make all sorts of baseless allegations.

CONCLUSION

“In conclusion, gentlemen, let me reiterate the following:

  1. a) The Federal Government was responsive and responsible in meeting the demands of the EndSARS protesters
  2. b) The irresponsible use of social media by some unscrupulous persons aggravated the violence that erupted in the wake of the EndSARS protest and helped to precipitate the violence. While the government has no plans to shut down the internet, it will work with stakeholders to regulate the social media to curb abuse
  3. c) Those who use the social media responsibly have nothing to fear, but those who abuse it have every reason to be worried, as no responsible government will stand by and allow a few unscrupulous elements to set the country ablaze.
  4. d) CNN goofed in its preconceived stance that the soldiers who were deployed to Lekki Toll Gate indeed shot at protesters, killing some of them. CNN relied heavily on unverified and possibly-doctored videos, as well as information sourced from questionable sources, to reach its conclusion. This should earn CNN a serious sanction for irresponsible reporting.
  5. e) While the Judicial Panel sitting in Lagos works to unravel what really transpired at the Lekki Toll Gate, available evidence so far points to the world’s first case of MASSACRE WITHOUT BLOOD OR BODIES.
  6. f) The Federal Government commends the security agencies for acting professionally and showing utmost restraint all through the EndSARS protest and the ensuing violence, an action that saved lives and properties
  7. g) Human Rights Organizations should note that the security agents are also human beings and they have rights too. Even if the organizations, for whatever reasons, are reluctant to recognize the human rights of security agents, they should quit vilifying them as they are wont to do. It is also disheartening that the human rights organizations have not seen anything wrong in the mindless violence that was perpetrated in the name of EndSARS.
  8. h) DJ Switch (Obianuju Catherine Udeh) should quit peddling falsehood and present her case, with verifiable evidence, to the Judicial Panel sitting in Lagos. No agency of government has declared her wanted hence she has no reason fleeing or seeking asylum anywhere.
  9. i) The sanctions imposed on some broadcast media organizations by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) are justified, in view of the unprofessional acts of the organizations which were in clear breach of the Broadcasting Code, as stated by the Commission. It is also imperative for the traditional media to authenticate information from the social media before pushing such to the public.”

Democracy Will Make Africa’s Future Better Than Its Past – Jonathan |The Source

Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan
Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan

Former President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan has made a case for the consolidation of democracy in Africa, describing it as a leverage that could ensure that the continent’s future would be better than its past.

ln a release on his behalf by his Media Assistant, Ikechukwu Eze, the former President noted that democracy might have its flaws but pointed out that various academic studies had demonstrated that the system of government “yields better economies, better health for its citizens and better respect for human rights.”

He stated this on Thursday in his keynote speech at a virtual conference organised by the Kofi Annan Foundation which focused on ‘Democracy in East Africa in the age of Covid 19: challenges and opportunities’.

Dr. Jonathan further affirmed that it was no coincidence that the countries with the best human development index scores are all democracies, while the worst performers are not.

He said further: “We have made enormous strides in Africa in terms of democracy. According to Freedom House, there were only two democracies in Africa in 1980; now there are no fewer than forty.”

Stressing that not all of these democracies meet the required standards, the former President however emphasised that they are mostly big improvements on what came before.

Comparing democracies to dictatorships, Jonathan stated that dictatorships around the world tend to underperform “because they are subjected to little or no accountability, either from a free press, an independent judiciary or a vibrant opposition.”

Conversely, Jonathan said that democracy “is fundamentally a competitive system, and competition keeps people, even politicians, on their toes”, adding that they are meant to be in power to serve their people and their countries, not themselves.

Dr. Jonathan noted that although democracy has its challenges in many countries, the aspiration to democracy has taken root, especially among our youth.

“From Washington to Abuja to Nairobi, democracy is always a work in progress, everywhere: each generation has to address challenges.”

Ondo Assembly Bluffs Court, Prevents Suspended Members From Entering Complex |The Source

Ondo State House of Assembly

By Ayodele Oni

Despite having judgements of the lower and appellate Courts in their favour, the four suspended members of Ondo State  House of Assembly were still locked out of the parliament building on Thursday.

The leadership of the House  insisted that they would remain outside until they were able to produce hard copies of the court judgement which ordered their reinstatement.

Chairman, house committee on information, Mr Gbenga Omole maintained that the suspended lawmakers’ coming to the House without the copy of the judgement was mischievous and embarrassing.

“As I am speaking with you we only read the judgment on the social media we have not got the hard copy of the judgment. When they were coming they failed to bring the copy of the judgment along. But because they are mischievous,  that is why they didn’t bring the copy of judgment along, Omole explained  .

It was learnt that security men at the gate of the Assembly, acting on the orders of the leadership, prevented the four Lawmakers from entering the assembly’s premises.

The Appeal Court sitting in Akure,  the state capital , on Wednesday upheld the judgement of the state High Court which ordered the Assembly to  reinstate the embattle lawmakers and paid them all their entitlements .

Those affected include the Deputy Speaker  Mr Iroju Ogundeji,  Mrs Favour Tomomewo and Mr Wale Williams, are members of the ruling All Progressives Congress.

They were earlier suspended by the leadership of the House over alleged gross misconduct but the courts ( both High Court and the Appeal Court) had dismissed that action of the Assembly leadership,  declaring it illegal.

Their suspension came at the peak of a botched move by the assembly to impeach the deputy governor, Mr Agboola Ajayi after he defected to the opposition People’s Democratic Party, (PDP).

Ajayi later contested along his boss in the October 10 Governorship Election on the ticket of the Zenith Labour Party, (ZLP) and came a distance third in the election.

Reacting to the action of the house, Deputy Speaker,  Ogundeji, said the Assembly leadership was contemptous for preventing them from  performing their legislative duties, despite a court judgement.

According to him,, ” Yesterday ( Wednesday),  the appellate court ruled that the motion brought before it concerning our suspension was frivolous and ordered that we should be reinstated to do our legislative duties immediately without hindrance,  that is why we were here but on getting here ( Assembly) we saw that everywhere was locked and we were not allowed to enter.”

Gunmen Invade Former Governor Dickson’s Home |The Source

By Adesina Soyooye

Former Bayelsa State Governor, Chief Seriake Dickson, and his family, escaped attack when gun men invaded his country home in Toru Orua, Sagbama LGA, midnight, Wednesday.

The former Governor, who is the PDP candidate for the Bayelsa West Senatorial Bye-election, scheduled for December 5, was in Abuja, while his wife, former First Lady, was in Yenegoa.

The gunmen who apparently came by speed boat, through the Forcados River, were, however, unsuccessful, as they were repelled by a team of Policemen, alerted of their presence.

However, one of the Policemen, an Inspector, was killed during the shoot-out between the Police team and the hoodlums.

A source told this magazine that the gunmen probably knew of the absence of the former Governor, and took advantage of it to raid his home.

Dickson, himself, a former Police Officer, before he opted for law, and later, politics,  in mourning the sad death of the Inspector, has condoled with the Inspector’s family, the Commissioner of Police, Officers and Men of the Bayelsa State Police Command, and the Inspector General of Police.

This is the second time the home of a high profile Bayelsa son will be invaded by gunmen within one year.

The first was the country home of former President Goodluck Jonathan, during which a Policeman was also killed.

Defection: Gov. Matawalle, Set To Join Umahi; Real Reason Ebonyi Governor Dumped PDP |The Source

0

By Chidi Levi

The People’s Democratic Party, PDP, will soon loose Zamfara state, The Source can authoritatively report.

Highly placed All Progressives Congress, APC, sources have told thesourceng.com that barring any last minute change of mind, Zamfara state Governor, Bello Muhammad Matawalle will, before the end of this year, defect to the ruling party.

If the Zamfara governor defects, he will be the second PDP governor after Ebonyi state governor, Dave Umahi,  to dump the former ruling party.

Governor Matawalle’s impending defection came as The Source magazine unearths the real reason behind Umahi’s defection.

Gov. Dave Umahi
Umahi: Accuses PDP of maltreating the South east

Matawalle was to leave the PDP Last Year

Matawalle became governor by default. He was thoroughly beaten by the APC candidate in the March 2019 Gubernatorial election, but became governor after a debilitating intra- party squabbles in the APC led to a series of legal tussles which climaxed with the Supreme court’s annulment all Primary elections conducted by the Zamfara APC.

Governor Aminu Tambuwal
Tambuwal: To pair with South south governor in 2023?

This magazine learnt that a PDP governor of South south extraction was instrumental to Matawalle picking the PDP gubernatorial ticket, and went further to support him financially during the litigation process.

However, no sooner had Matawalle survived all the legal landmines, and got his Governorship confirmed than the said South-south Governor started seeing himself as his godfather, the magazine was told.

“The overbearing influence of this South-south governor prompted Matawalle to make up his mind to dump the party, just six months after coming into office. He was to leave the PDP last year, but was prevailed upon by political associates to tarry  a while”, party sources inform the Magazine.

No Second Term Ticket for You

According to our sources, the proverbial last straw that broke the camel’s back, and further nudged the Zamfara governor into the decision to jump ship were signs that the said South-south governor who wields enormous influence in the PDP, was poised to cause the party to deny him a second term ticket for the 2023 governorship election.

An APC chieftain who spoke to The Source puts it in perspective: “Matawalle is still a young man and a first term governor. So, he has to fight for his political future while there is still enough time to do so. Every governor wants to do a second term, and from all indications, for Matawalle, the prospect of that under the PDP is dim. Of course, he would not want to remain in a party where he will later be told: No second term ticket for you”

Pressure From North West Governors, Party Chieftains

Besides the above, Matawalle  has also been under pressure from North West Governors and party chieftains from the zone to join the APC.

He is the only PDP governor in the region.

It was learnt that the governors and party stalwarts have made several overtures to Matawalle to join them in the APC, reminding him that Zamfara is naturally an APC state and, therefore, has no business being in the opposition.

To further ginger his interest, automatic ticket by the Northwest APC for the 2023 guber election is being dangled before the Zamfara governor.

Umahi: Real Reason He Left the PDP

When the Ebonyi state governor said he left the PDP because of the alleged injustice the party meted out to the south east, he was only merely scratching the surface.

Impeccable sources told thesourceng.com that in the course of Umahi’s consultations for the party’s vice Presidential ticket for 2023, he was made to understand, to his chagrin, that  the party has since settled for two possibilities in respect of its 2023 presidential ticket to the utter exclusion of South east, despite the repeated insistence by the PDP National leadership that it was yet to take a stand on zoning the ticket.

Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto state ( presidential candidate), is billed  to pair with the influential South south governor mentioned above ( vice Presidential candidate),  or a repeat of the Atiku Abubakar candidacy but this time around, with a former South west governor as a running mate.

It was at that juncture that the Ebonyi state governor, concluded that the South east, despite being its stronghold since 1999, does not actually have a future with the PDP.

Uche Secondus
Uche Secondus, PDP national Chairman: What is PDP’s plan for the South east?

He thus vowed to trigger off a chain of events that will bring it to its knees in the region.

And, in keeping with this vow, Umahi and his Imo start counterpart, Hope Uzodinma, are now impressing it upon governors Okezie Ikpeazu( Abia) and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi( Enugu) on why the South east should empty into the APC.

The Source magazine gathered that PDP’s alleged schemings against the South east actually started in the run up to the 2019 presidential election.

Competent party sources reveal that, had Tambuwal won the October 2018 presidential primaries, he would have picked the said former Southwest governor as running mate.

It was further learnt that certain elements within the PDP, including the South South governor, actually blamed the party’s defeat at the 2019 presidential polls on Atiku’s choice of a running mate from the South east in the person of the solid former Anambra governor, Peter Obi.

Meanwhile, though Umahi stridently kicked against Obi’s choice as Atiku’s running mate in the 2019 presidential election, and worked against the Atiku/Obi ticket, the magazine has been told that prominent Igbo leaders who are in the know of PDP’s secret decision on its 2023 presidential ticket, are in tacit support of the Ebonyi governor’s move to the APC.

#EndSARS Protest: Dokpesi Urges FG To Brace Up; Says Protest Just Began |The Source

Raymond Dokpesi

By Akinwale Kasali

DAAR Communication PLC Founder, High Chief  Raymond Dokpesi has lent his voice to the #EndSARS protest that took the Federal Government by storm, before it was hijacked by hoodlums, leading to destruction of lives and Properties. advising and warning the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to brace up for more #ENDSARS protests if the demands of the protesters are not met.

Dokpesi stressed that as long as impunity and injustices remain in the system, Nigerians, especially the youths, will continue to demand good governance.

He made this statements when he led the management of DAAR Communications to Vintage Press Ltd, publishers of The Nation over the recent attack on its facilities in Lagos headquarters.

He advised the Federal Government to release detained members of the #EndSARS movement to avoid unnecessary issues that will escalate the present situation.

He frowned at the Federal Government Freezing the accounts of members of the #EndSARS movement, calling for  the accounts to be unfrozen.

Dokpesi said #EndSARS was beginning of a long struggle to appraise and restructure the country.

“A lot of impunity has happened in a very recent time. Nigeria has never been as divided as it is today. People have lost faith and confidence in the ability of Nigeria to remain as one united country.

“So, the time is fast approaching but we pray that God will raise a crop of Nigerians, who still believe strongly in the unity, progress and development of this country.

“Those who can sacrifice because the people who are supposed to be our servants – public servants, civil servants – have become our public masters.

“Until we re-orientate the people that public service is service to our people, that we are in the office to contribute to the well-being and good of our country, then, the #EndSARS has just started. It has emboldened quite a lot of people.  There is nothing to be hidden anymore,” he said.

He alleged the protests were peaceful until some forces in the government sponsored hoodlums to attack them.

He said: “The #EndSARS protest started in a quiet and proper manner. It was an effort of overzealous elements of the government that went to recruit hoodlums to overtake the legitimate protest organised by those that are graduates and well educated that led to the crisis.

“When the protest started, nobody saw any gun; nobody saw anything until an effort was made to quell it. In Abuja where I was, we saw trucks of people they brought in, uneducated to overpower the educated.

“Those people carried cutlasses and sticks and that was the beginning of it. If they had not brought in the hoodlums, it’s possible we would have had a peaceful protest.”

He warned that as a parent, he was ready come out to challenge the government to release the protesters

“They are going after protesters because their own children aren’t involved, so those of us that have our own children involved, can we ask that they be killed?

“Next time, it wouldn’t be the children protesting, we, the parents, will come out and say let our children be free and that’s what we are going to do and the conditions that prevail today now, should it goes to the first quarter of next year, it will be very disastrous and it will be bad for all of us. Let us put on our thinking cap and reverse the situation,” he said.

He described the attack on The Nation premises and facilities as unfortunate and most painful.

“Having gone through this path myself several times in the past, I know how demoralising and devastating it is…It is not such a pain that can just be pushed away or go off in a short time but our gratitude to God is that the fact that the areas that were touched are now gradually being refurbished.

‘’May God not let us experience this; may this organisation be able to prosper and provide that leadership it has begun to provide.’’

Dokpesi said the media should be the last place to be attacked by any group of persons.

“No matter how convincing their grievances were, The Nation didn’t deserve the type of attack that it was subjected to and like I have said, may God not let this happen again in the future,” he said.

#EndSARS Protest: Timi Frank Lauds CNN On Lekki Shootings; Lambast Sanwo-Olu, Buratai, FG |The Source

By Akinwale Kasali

Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank, on Thursday, commended the Cable Network News (CNN) for its in-depth report on the alleged Lekki Tollgate shooting of #EndSARS protesters by men of the Nigerian Army.

He thanked the international news medium for helping to expose the truth about how soldiers invaded the Tollgate and pumped live bullets into peaceful protesters that killed and wounded scores of Nigerian youths on Tuesday October 20, 2020.

He noted that by the well-researched investigative story, the CNN has helped to put a lie to the false claims by the Nigerian Army that its soldiers fired blank into the air on that “bloody night of bullets.”

He said it was a good thing that the news outlet helped to uncover the cover-up of the Major General Muhammadu Buhari-led regime, the Lagos State Government, the Nigerian Army and the police concerning the  peaceful protesters at the Lekki Toll Plaza.

The Bayelsa-born political activist, said he was optimistic that the overwhelming evidence unearthed in the report would aid the International Criminal Court (ICC) in prosecuting those who perpetuated the dastardly act including Buhari, Governor Babajide Sanwolu, Chief of Army Staff, General Tukur Buratai and the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu for aiding and abetting the commission of Crimes Against Humanity (CAH).

He called on the ICC to carry out its own diligent investigation on the massacre as well as ensure that officials found culpable are brought to justice anywhere in the world they’re are spotted outside the shores of Nigeria.

He noted that the Buhari’s regime has been doing all it can to suppress the truth about the  Lekki massacre before the CNN exposed their  satanic lies with graphic evidence.

He lamented that despite the international opprobrium that trailed the Lekki Tollgate massacre, the Federal Government has continued to threaten Nigerian youths by vowing not to allow a similar protest rather than show remorse.

He further lamented that the present anti-people’s regime of Buhari has continued to violate the fundamental human rights of innocent Nigerian youths through inhuman acts meant to intimidate and oppress those believed to have taken part in the #EndSARS protests.

He called on the genuine #EndSARS protesters not to give in to arrests, intimidation harassment, court trials  and imprisonments in their struggle to make the country a better place for all Nigerians.

He said even if the present crop of uncaring government officials escape justice in the courts of men, the blood of those killed and maimed by SARS on the one hand and soldiers at the Lekki Tollgate shootings would hunt them and their families forever.

“The blood of the innocent lives lost will hunt all those that connived and killed peaceful protesters at the Lekki Tollgate. They may may thwart the justice of men but will definitely not escape the justice of God,” he declared.
