Buhari Blames Gaddafi’s Killing For Insecurity; Slams CNN, BBC |The Source

By Uche Mbah

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday, blamed the insecurity in the the West African Region, which spread, badly, to Nigeria on the crisis in Libya, which resulted in the horrendous murder of its President, Muammar Gaddafi. Its result, he said, was the movement of arms across the borders.

Buhari also says he is “thinking very hard” about the menace that has become kidnapping, promising to support the Military to route out the kidnappers and bandits from their hideouts.

He spoke at a meeting with Governors  from the 36 states of the Federation  Tuesday.

“We are thinking very hard on the issue of kidnapping. We will make it possible for the military to get to the bandits and kidnappers and eliminate them,” adding that the closure of land borders was geared towards the fight against banditry and the smuggling of drugs and guns. According to him, the Military will get the support they need.

Critics have slammed  Buhari’s Government for closing Southern Borders, and leaving the North open. Bandits come from the Northern borders, they reasoned.

He, surprisingly, gave his administration thumbs up for  containing insecurity, the suprise being that the impression is that insecurity has since worsened in Nigeria, and has reached an unprecedented level

But the President said: “Now that the message has sunk in with our neighbors, we are looking into reopening the borders as soon as possible,” the President said.

Continuing, hr said, “I am not going to the public to speak about the vehicles and equipment we have ordered. What I can say is that the military received armored cars and other equipment. More of such equipment, including military aircraft, will come in.”

“The sub-region is no longer safe, more so with the collapse of the former Libyan leader, Muammar Gaddafi’s regime and the cross border movement of weapons and criminals.

“Governors must work with traditional rulers. Try and work with traditional rulers to boost intelligence gathering.”

Buhari then told the Governors  that his administration had performed creditably well in the North East and South-South, but that the The South-South situation was still worrisome.

“Every day I get situation reports about illegal refineries and the blowing up of pipelines. You must stop local rogues from sabotaging oil installations.”

“We do not stop anyone from demonstrating, but you don’t set up roadblocks and smashing windscreens. Which government will allow that?”

President Buhari  took a swipe at CNN and BBC, for not talking of the number of policemen killed, police stations razed, and the prisons that were thrown open for inmates to escape during the #endsars protests. He said no responsible government can allow anything like #endsars to happen. “Democracy does not mean confusion or lack of accountability,” he said.

“I was disgusted by the coverage, which did not give attention to the policemen that were killed, the stations that were burnt, and prisons that were opened. (They said we are all at fault. We don’t have the sympathy of anyone. We are on our own).”

On the eight-month-long strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, the President blamed lecturers for not taking into consideration the larger challenges facing the country.

“Government conceded something. The problem is that they refused to look at the problem of the whole country. The Minister of Labour is working hard at it. It is amazing how ASUU will stay out of classrooms for so long. There’s a need for our elites to understand the challenges facing the country.”

Insecurity: Arewa Consultative Forum Says Security Situation In North Depressing |The Source

The Area Consultative Forum, ACF, has described as appalling, the security situation in the country, especially in the North.

The Group said that the neglect of human capital development and other activities capable of facilitating growth in the North,  has contributed to the woes and pathetic situation of things in the region, and  plunged the region into an unprecedented backwardness in development.

ACF Chairman, and former Minister for Agriculture, Audu Ogbeh, decried  this level of insecurity in the region when the Group visited Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State.

Ogbeh led the delegation to Maiduguri, Borno State Capital, to meet with the Governor and condole with him over the killing of over 43 farmers by Boko Haram insurgents in Zabarmari community of the state.

The former minister said politics is the only thriving industry in the region, adding that youths in the region have resorted to violence in other to earn a living.

“We are depressed, very depressed. And anyone of us, of our age, who was not depressed, he was not well-born. Because we have nothing to leave behind for our children, and violence will not sustain us,” a statement on Monday quoted Ogbeh as saying.

“The tragedy of the north today is that the only industry left is politics, and politics alone has never grown any society”

Ogbeh bemoaned the deterioration of the agricultural industry in the region, saying that the region needs to re-grow and find ways out of the current quagmire.

He also unveiled the forum’s plan to revive the region’s economy, saying it will commence a programme geared towards “developing small-scale agro-industries across the north.”

“We have to re-grow Borno state, we have to re-grow the north, we have to re-grow Nigeria. We have no industries, agriculture has declined and our own children have now turned to violence as a means of livelihood.

“Your Excellency, in ACF we have decided that we will not talk too much politics, we decided to focus on something else, we are going to start a program of developing small-scale agro-industries across the north.”

On his part, Governor Zulum thanked the forum for commiserating with him and the State  over the killings.

The Governor  asked the Federal  Government  to find lasting solutions to the insurgency in the north-east.

The Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland Gani Adams has revealed why he cannot forgive former President, Olusegun  Obasanjo.

The Yoruba Generalissimo stressed  that if he made any attempt to forgive or reconcile with  Obasanjo, his (Adams) guardian angel would never forgive him.

Adams said Obasanjo has continuously cast aspersion on his character, maligning him and ridiculing him all the time.

Recently, the Media had carried the story that  the former President and the Aare Onakakanfo  had reconciled their 15-year-old feud at Pa Ayo Adebanjo’s residence in Lagos. But Obasanjo dismissed the reconciliation story saying he had no quarrel with Adams to warrant reconciliation.

According to Obasanjo, “It is true that I paid a personal visit to Chief Ayo Adebanjo at his residence in Lekki Phase 1 on December 2, 2020 and I met Gani Adams there.

“I have no quarrel with Gani Adams, but for his past way of life which was not in accord with my standards and principles.

“I have, in the past, both in government and out of government, refused to grant Gani’s request to visit me”, Obasanjo stated.

However, reacting to Obasanjo’s remarks, Aare Adams said it was necessary for him to respond to the former president,  categorically stating  that he could not forgive Obasanjo.

Adams also expressed his worry over the state of insecurity in the country saying the only way to address the state of insecurity is for the nation to be restructured.

“When we restructure our security, we can have four levels of police. We can have the federal, regional, state and local government police.”

Guns Shots Boom As Ondo Governorship Election Tribunal Begins Sitting |The Source

High Court, Akure

By Ayodele Oni

The atmosphere at the High Court premises in Akure, Ondo State was charged, and tension high, as the Election Petition Tribunal commenced sitting over the petition filed by Mr Eyitayo Jegede, candidate of the People’s Democratic Party in October Governorship election.

This was due to a clash between supporters of the PDP and ruling All Progressives Congress, (APC), during which a driver to one of  of Jegede’s Counsels was stabbed by suspected thugs of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, (NURTW) allegedly working for the APC.

The State  PDP Publicity Secretary, Kennedy Peretei, in a statement said Governor Rotimi Akeredolu  ”mobilized large number of thugs to the venue of Ondo Gubernatorial Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

“At the hearing this morning, Tuesday, APC thugs under the leadership of one “Chemical” bombarded the venue, harassing, molesting, beating up, shooting sporadically into the air and attacking anyone perceived to be supporter of the PDP and its Candidate, Mr Eyitayo Jegede, SAN.

“Mr. Sunday Oladunmoye is still receiving treatment from machete cut wounds he sustained from this group of thugs. They were parading the vicinity of the Court in a tinted Toyota Corolla car. Others were members of the Taxi Unit of National Union of Road Transport Workers ((NURTW) with instructions from their master Jacob Adebo (Idajo) to cause pandemonium during the sitting.

“As early as 8.30a.m this morning, the Petitioners, Eyitayo Jegede and the PDP represented by its State Chairman, Alhaji Fatai Adams, led other PDP leaders to the Court. But shortly thereafter, the APC thugs caused so much panic and confusion within the arena. It took the combined efforts of the Army and Policemen to restore order.

“The PDP wishes to call on security agencies to live up to this fresh threat to law and order in the State. Resorting to violence will not deter the PDP and its candidate from pursuing this Petition to its conclusive end.

Neither can this act of barbarism scare the Judges from the course of Justice.”

However, the APC claimed that the allegation by the opposition PDP was unreasonable as neither the Governor  nor the party has any cause to engage thugs.

A statement by Alex Jalejaye, APC Publicity Secretary, states that “contrary to the unreasonable desperation of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, to smear the image of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State, and its candidate, Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN, the ruling party has no reason to mobilise thugs to the venue of the governorship tribunal, sitting in Akure.

“The APC in Ondo State parades unequalled disposition to peaceful conducts and approaches to issues, and therefore would not promote nor condone thuggery for whatever gains. “Like other stakeholders in the election petition tribunal, APC stalwarts, in their most decent and dignified manners arrived early today at the court, to listen to the proceedings.

“We learnt, with dismay avoidable rowdiness among people that were struggling to enter the court premises. To the best of our knowledge, the desperation gave room for clash.

“We are of the strong opinion that political parties and other stakeholders should caution their sympathisers against unruly display throughout the legal process, rather than holding APC responsible for such indecent and aggressive attitude.

“We wish to affirm our confidence in the tribunal to dispense justice, and would therefore have no reason to encourage violent disposition, under whatever guise.

“At the end of the legal exercise, the tribunal’s decision would be informed by convictions, based on facts, and not on account of thuggery and violent displays.”

The caretaker committee of the All Progressives Congress,(APC) will be in office till June 2021.

This followed the extension of the tenure of the committee on Tuesday at the virtual national executive committee of the party held at the presidential villa Abuja with governors and others joining virtually.

The NEC also dissolved all the organs of the party from ward, State and Zonal executives with only caretaker national committee, the only organ not affected by the dissolution.

Virtually all state organs of the party had been in crisis with some states dragging the leadership to court.

This has led to suspension and counter action on the part of those at the centre of the crisis, especially in Ekiti state where a faction led by Senator Babafemi Ojudu reportedly suspended Governor Kayode Fayemi.

OPINION: Muhammadu Buhari: A Tale Of Two Characters |The Source

0
President Buhari of Nigeria

By Bulama Bukarti

An adaption of Charles Dickens’ evocative opening in his 1859 novel A Tale of Two Cities aptly describes the sad times in which we live. By toiling and moiling for years to put General Buhari in charge, millions of ordinary Nigerians believed they were ushering in the best of times, but ended up in the worst of times.

They were marketed competence, transparency and responsibility, but got sold ineptitude, opacity and irresponsibility. Nigerians elected hope, but were handed despair; they bargained for an epoch of empathy and compassion but got the epoch of insensibility and indifference.

The miserable synopsis of the Buhari Presidency is that Nigerians have been conned, swindled and scammed.

Last weekend was yet another gloomy chapter in the depressing tale of Buhari’s presidency. At least 43 farm workers were massacred in the most brutal of ways by agents of Abubakar Shekau – the most vicious man on earth.

The victims, for the ‘crime’ of seeking to put food on their, and our, tables, were mercilessly beheaded by devils claiming to be fighting for Allah. Photos of how their severed heads were rested on their backs were among the most gruesome things I have seen.

Listening to their relatives’ accounts of their final moments on BBC Hausa left me fighting back tears.

The excruciating pain in the voice of the mother that lost two sons in the massacre was haunting. One of her sons was himself a father to a two-year-old and a 56-day-old. When the woman was asked what her message to the government is, her answer broke me even more; she paused for a moment and then said, “I have no message for them”.

There was no greater testimony of her utter contempt for the government’s ability to act. The frustration of millions of Nigerians. Why would she have a message for a government that doesn’t care or listens?

As the whole country is grieving, President Buhari is missing in action. He didn’t fly to Maiduguri to attend the funeral and condole the grief-stricken community. He was too ‘busy’ to spare even five minutes of National Address to calm a devastated people and reassure a petrified nation.

He couldn’t even call the Governor of Borno State, the Shehu of Borno and members of parliament representing the state to condole them. His silence was as loud as a bomb blast. Denying, downplaying and ignoring mass atrocities have now become a defining feature of the Buhari administration. This is just the latest example.

President Buhari is ignoring the same problems for which he harshly condemned his predecessor and urged him to resign. The same problems he rode to power. At least, Jonathan declared a State of Emergency.

At least, Jonathan fired failed service chiefs. At least, Jonathan addressed the nation and tried to calm it down. Nigerians aren’t expecting a silver bullet. They are simply asking their leader to demonstrate to them that he both understands and shares their pain and is sparing no effort.

They want their leader to take responsibility, set out a roadmap and get to work. That is what Buhari has contemptuously refused or woefully failed to do.

Worse still, instead of comforting the victims and cheering the nation, Buhari’s cheerleaders resorted to victim-blaming in the most shameful way.

His Minister of Communications, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, accused the victims and their heartbroken families and friends of not cooperating with the Nigerian army, even though Shekau said he killed them for helping the military.

His spokesperson, Mallam Garba Shehu, said the victims went to the scene without clearance from the army, despite knowing full well that the army does not issue such authorisations. After all, what is the use of a clearance from soldiers who are struggling to defend themselves? In fact, some officials defamed the victims as Boko Haram informants even as Shekau said he slaughtered them for arresting his members and handing them over to the army.

Buhari has proven to be his own “dopplegänger”, the literary term for two characters with strikingly similar physiques but with very different personalities, who serve as sharp contrasts or antagonists. General Buhari presented himself as an incorruptible man who would stand up for ordinary Nigerians. He claimed to be ready to combat the insecurity, poverty and corruption ravaging our country.

He portrayed himself as an austere retired civil servant who would never indulge in luxuries at the expense of all of us.

For past half a decade, we got the complete opposite; a Buhari who is indifferent and insensitive; a Buhari who neither takes responsibility nor listens. A Buhari who flies to London to treat his ear infection while our doctors are on strike; a Buhari whose wife jets to Dubai for neck pain when hundreds of women die daily in childbirth for lack of basic equipment; a Buhari whose children fly around the same presidential planes that he refused to board to Maiduguri; a Buhari who hides himself incommunicado in the safety of Aso Rock while his people get killed, robbed and kidnapped every single day. The Abuja Buhari can’t be in sharper contrast to the Daura Buhari.

It is unsurprising that Buhari’s own base is so disenchanted and angry. The same people who saw him as the messiah now see him as a good-for-nothing, self-centred politician.

That subsistence farmers, Muslim clerics, truck drivers, northern elders and everyday northerners would take to the media to ask Buhari to resign is unimaginable even in the wildest of dreams. But that’s what you get when a leader persists in failing in the most basic of his obligations.

Buhari has got to come to terms with reality and retrace his steps. He has got to take responsibility and work flat out to stop the horror unfolding in the land. Otherwise, his government will face an extraordinary revolt from the north and his party will be defeated in a landslide come 2023.

He begged Nigerians in tears to give him leadership and now he must show leadership. If he can’t stop widespread killings, kidnappings, robberies and destruction, he has no right to be president. Buhari must lead or leave. Period.

Cross River: Operation “Akpakwu” Nabs Kidnap kingpin, Gang Members, in Calabar |The Source

0

By Stanley Ekpenyong, Calabar

In line with Governor Ben Ayade’s vow to make Cross River hot for kidnappers and other criminal elements operating in the state, Operation “Akpakwu”, a security outfit  launched last week by the  Governor, has nabbed a Kidnnap kingpin in the state, Etim Etim Bassey.

Several other kidnappers were also arrested in the operation.

Etim and his gang are part of the kidnap ring that has been terrorising  Calabar, the state capital.

Ayade had, while launching the security outfit, declared war on the kidnappers and other criminals in the state, asking them to relocate from Cross River, especially, Calabar or face the wrath of his Government.

He vowed to restore the state to its natural  peaceful nature.

Calabar Kidnapper

“Cross River State statistically remains the safest state in Nigeria , however as a state we are used to the culture of zero kidnapping, zero cultism and zero robbery.

“In recent past, there has been an increase in the number of crime within the Niger Delta and the country as a whole arising from the difficulty orchestrated by Endsars as well as Covid19 which brought a general poverty and general hardship upon the entire world”

According to him, “the instruction is very clear from Abuja, you must deal decisively with any form of criminality, you must deal decisively with any form of banditry, cultism, kidnapping of any form.

“Let this, therefore, be a strong message to every Cross Riverian and non indigenes alike, that as far as you are resident in Cross River State, today is the end of that criminality.

“Today is the end of armed robbery, banditry must end today. We have received very clear instructions from the federal government and I have supported and I stand strong with all my military men and the police that they must comply with the obligations, the instructions and orders of the Inspector General of Police and the commander in chief of the Nigerian armed forces that Cross River State must be made safe.”

Calabar Kidnapper

The Governor blamed the spate of kidnappings and robberies in the state on outsiders, citing the police records of those arrested so far in the state over crimes.

He stated that going forward, every landlord in the state must account for every tenant as part of the regulations which he has  signed into law under the Homeland security.

The Governor also declared that  under this operation “Akpakwu”, Government will henceforth demolish any property belonging to, or being occupied by kidnappers and robbers”

Operation “Akpakwu” draws personnel from the army, navy, Air Force and Civil Defence.

To enhance operations, the Governor handed over 100 patrol vehicles fitted with cutting edge communication gadgets, ten power bikes and drones.

And, now, the outfit has plucked its first fruits.
