Kankara: Group Slams Garba Shehu For Blaming, Mocking Victims Of Crime |The Source

By Akinwale Kasali

The Federal Government through its utterances compounded the prospects  of the early release of over 300 students abducted in Katsina State, Alliance for the Survival of Covid 19 and Beyond, (ASCAB) said on Friday.

ASCAB welcomed the release of the students but cautioned against feeding Nigerians with fake news.

In a statement signed by the coalition’s Chairman,  Mr Femi Falana, (SAN), the group said President Mohammadu Buhari’s spokespersons, Shehu Garba appeared to relish in harvesting political capital out of the misery of the kidnapped students.

ASCAB asks the Federal Government to provide adequate security for all private and public institutions in troubled areas.

The group said the release of the students does not mean it will not happen again, urging the Presidential spokesperson to learn to be honest and reflect the truth in all situations.

“Each time there is a national tragedy, the Presidential spokesperson, by his utterances injure the psyche of grief-stricken families and hurt the conscience of the country” ASCAB said, adding that  Garba Shehu has reduced the Presidency to butts of jokes and public ridicule in the social media.

ASCAB said statements from the Presidential spokesperson focus more on defending the image of the government, albeit poorly, rather than sharing the grief of victims, their troubled relatives and restoring hope in a despairing population citing the recent response of Shehu Garba immediately after hundreds of students were kidnapped in Katsina State.

The group said the local and international communities have taken such tactless statements as the official position of the President adding that the position merely adds salt to the festering wound of the depressed families.

“The release of the students has exposed the hypocricy of the Presidency and its penchant for spreading fake news. Even in the face of figures given by Governor Aminu Masari, the Katsina State Governor, Garba for instance keeps quoting numbers far less than the well known facts. He started by saying escaped students claimed 10 students were in the kidnapper’s den. But the official figures from the Katsina state Government who should know better puts the figure at no fewer than 333 students.”

Shehu has since apologised for the misinformation.

The students of Government Science Secondary School were kidnapped last weekend at Kankara in Katsina State fueling public outrage. They were  freed on Thursday, after six gruelling days in the hands of Kidnappers.

Earlier, over 70 farmers were slaughtered by the extremist group Boko Haram in Zabamari Community in Jere Local Government of Bornu State. On Monday, 19 people were said to have been kidnapped in Niger State after killing at least one person. This occurred two days after the Katsina incidence.

ASCAB said the Spokesperson is always desperate to defend the President in the most inconsistent, self-defeatist and sometimes ridiculous manners.

“Nigerians are accepting the fact that President Buhari’s image makers are more interested in twisting facts and presenting fake news to Nigerians than presenting the narrative of every event with utmost sense of responsibility to good conscience and to the Nigerian public.”

ASCAB made reference to the killing of more than 78 farmers in Bornu State when Garba Shehu’s first response was to accuse the farmers of failing to take permission from the military as if farming is illegal and that citizens ought to seek the right of protection from security insitutions before going to their work places.

“We expect the President and Commander-in-Chief to know that Nigerians irrespective of the work they do should be protected by security operatives. It is even more important to know that farmers deserve special protection in troubled zones” ASCAB said.

Ekiti State University

By Ayodele Oni

After about ten months of legal tussle and anguish, 32 workers of the Ekiti State University, (EKSU) whose appointments were terminated, have cause to smile.

The Akure division of the National Industrial Court has ordered Ekiti State University, (EKSU) Ado Ekiti, to reinstate the 32 workers, who are technologists whose appointments were terminated last year.

The technologists were among those employed during the tenure of the immediate past Vice Chancellor, Prof Bandele.

In a suit, NICN/AD/03/2020, filed on behalf of the workers  by P.P. Monde and J.S. Balogun, Justice K.D. Damulake ruled that their disengagement was null and void, illegal, unlawful.

In the suit, Ogundipe Joshua Oluwafemi & 31 others, the Claimants had urged the Court to declare their sack as illegal and of no effect.

They also prayed the Court to order their reinstatement back to the former positions as well as pay their salaries and allowances.

Joined in the suit are Ekiti State University, the Governing Council and the Vice Chancellor.

Counsels for the defendants were Dayo Akinlaja, SAN, Genevieve Okoye, Oluwatosin Olanipekun and Adesola Edungola.

Justice Damulate also ordered  that the University  should pay three months salary owed the workers before the unlawful disengagement as well as salaries, emoluments and allowances from the date of their unlawful sack till their retirement.

How A South-West PDP Leader Is Causing Problem For Fear Of EFCC – Gov. Makinde |The Source

Governor Seyi Makinde

By Akinwale Kasali

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State  says that a PDP Leader in the South- west is deliberately causing problems within the party for fear of the EFCC. Stopping short of naming the culprit, Makinde said that if the leader felt he could destabilise the PDP, and join the APC for protection, he should learn from history.

Governor Makinde said the South-West chapter of the PDP will continue with efforts aimed at uniting its members to ensure a stronger party in the zone, stressing that dissident zonal EXCO members have no right to remove the Chairman.

Addressing newsmen after a meeting with members of the Zonal Working Committee of the party, the Governor  said that leaders of the party would continue to support reconciliatory efforts of the former Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola-led Reconciliation Committee.

He added that the Oyinlola team will work with the Committee  set up by the national leadership of the PDP to unite the party in the South-West geopolitical zone.

He maintained that leaders of the party in the geopolitical zone will not be deterred or discouraged in their efforts to reconcile all parties in the South-West PDP, as he called on certain individuals behind the crisis rocking the zonal chapter to have a change of heart, and do what is right for the party.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor,  Taiwo Adisa, quoted Makinde as declaring that the alleged suspension of the Zonal Chairman  of the party, Mr. Dayo Ogungbenro, null and void.

He maintained that members of the Zonal Executive who announced the suspension of the Chairman  lacked the power to do so since they did not constitute two-thirds of the executive committee as guaranteed by the party’s constitution.

He said: “They don’t have the power to suspend the Chairman. Even if you go constitutional, you know,  5 out of 12 is more than 45 per cent. So, let’s even say they want to go constitutional, you will need at least two-thirds by the constitution of the party. And two-thirds of 12 is 8.

“So, they don’t have that power and I am speaking now as the only Governor of PDP in the South-West. The  National  Leadership  will respect my position on such matters,” Makinde said.

Speaking further after the meeting held at the Government House, Agodi, Ibadan, Governor Makinde declared that the leaders of the PDP in the South-West have identified the troublemakers in their midst.

He said: “The leadership of PDP in the South-West came to see me to discuss the situation with PDP in the South-West zone and you can see the chairman and then out of the 12 members, 5 of them came in from Lagos, Oyo, Osun and Ekiti. We didn’t see anyone from Ondo and Ogun.

“So, we discussed. The Governor Oyinlola-led reconciliation committee will continue to do its work and it will also work together with the reconciliation committee set up by the National Working Committee of the party.”

Speaking on the causes of the crisis within the party in the South-West zone, the Governor  said: “They told me that one of our leaders has been the major individual causing trouble in the South-West and we deliberated to ask why that is so; and we said maybe because of the EFCC case or something like that.

“I said that shouldn’t be, because it is better to stay with your own party. Even if you have the EFCC case, the people that went and joined them [ruling party], there is Joshua Dariye from Plateau and Reverend Jolly Nyame from Taraba, they ended up in jail. Even Governor Orji Uzor Kalu, it was only God that brought him out.

“So, that leader should forget about the EFCC case and do what is right for the party. Because I will just say it, for 2023, even God has rejected APC; the people of Nigeria have rejected them. They can be jumping around saying this one or that one wants to be president in 2023, if we (PDP) get in, there will be double jeopardy for him because he will have to run back from APC to PDP.

“But apart from that, I think we will continue the efforts to unite the party in the South-West geopolitical zone”, he concluded.

Boko Haram Lied, Bandits Kidnapped Schoolboys, Says Lai Mohammed |The Source

Alhaji Lai Mohammed

By Uche Mbah

The Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, has said that the abduction  of School Boys in Katsina was done by bandits and not Boko Haram.

Hundreds  of school boys were abducted  last week from their school, Government Science Secondary School   by gunmen . There was  controversy over the actual figure that was kidnapped. While Garba Shehu, the Presidential spokesperson said only ten people were kidnapped, the State  Governor , Aminu Masari, said about 330 students were Kidnapped. One escaped student claimed over 500.

In the late hours of Thursday, the  State  Government  announced the release of 344 students.

Shehu later apologised on his Twitter handle for the error.

“I apologise  for the incorrect communication citing that only 10 students were kidnapped at the Science School, Kankara

“This communication of numbers was provided by persons that should ideally know. These numbers were seen to conflict with what was available at that time.

“Please understand that this communication was in no way done to downplay the seriousness of the situation.

“Please accept my sincere apologies on this matter as we continue to move our great Nation Nigeria forward. Thank you”, he tweeted.

But the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, said in Abuja that the abduction  was done by bandits and not Boko Haram. He also claimed that no ransom was paid to the bandits before the release of the boys.

Boko Haram had posted a video with some of the Boys claiming responsibility for the kidnap. But  Mohammed said that it shows they were already decimated. According to him, they are just seeking relevance.

“The release of these schoolboys is a testament to the importance that this Administration attaches to the security and safety of all Nigerians”, he said.

“There is no government in the world that will not face the challenges of security at one time or another.

“No government in the world is immune to terrorist attacks. What stands any government out is the way and manner it responds to such challenges.”

FG Grants Verification And Enrolment License for NIN To Airtel |The Source

Airtel

By Uche Mbah

Telecom giant, Airtel Nigeria, has been granted a license to enroll Nigerians into the National Identification Number project, thus becoming the first Telecom Company to be granted such license.

The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, had recently thrown the country into an uproar when it insisted on two weeks grace period for  Nigerians that have not obtained the NIN to obtain it or have their phone lines barred. Telecom firms were threatened with the withdrawal of licenses if they refuse to comply within two weeks.

Nigerians argued that two weeks is too short a time frame, considering that it has been chaotic and difficult for Nigerians  making spirited efforts to register for the NIN.

But in his certified Facebook page, Emeka Oparah, Vice President, Corporate Communications and CSR of Airtel, posted a Press release from the telecom giant indicating that Airtel has been favored to register NIN.

“The approval was contained in a notice issued, Wednesday by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC)”, the release said.

“With this approval, Nigerians can now complete their NIN registration process at any accredited Airtel outlet nationwide.

“Commenting on this development, the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Airtel Nigeria, Mr. Segun Ogunsanya, commended the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Pantami, for expanding the registration footprints and for taking definitive steps to smoothen the NIN process as well as ease the burden on Nigerians.

‘Airtel is always seeking opportunities to cooperate and partner with the Nigerian government on initiatives that will make life easier and better for Nigerians. As a law-abiding and responsible corporate citizen, we are always ready to go the extra mile for our esteemed stakeholders and that is why we are pleased to partner with the Federal Government and NIMC on citizens’ registration exercise,’ he said.

“Customers who do not have NIN can fulfill this requirement at any certified NIMC Enrolment center while Airtel subscribers who already have NINs will be offered options to send their NINs to Airtel via USSD or SMS or through the Airtel Self Care App or Website to update their SIM registration details.

“Foreign nationals are required to present their international passports only to register a new SIM when the restriction on registration of new sims is lifted. “

Why Justice Abang’s Conviction of Olisa Metuh Smells of Malice |The Source

Olisa Metuh

By Hon. Justice Stephen Adah, JCA

“The narrative of the trial judge suggest someone who didn’t enjoy trying the appellant and counsel because he said they were picking on him.

“He was struggling with the case and even wished that he should be recused out of the case. The influence from this narrative is indisputably to say the least that a trial judge was angered only in his mind that he was wrongly influenced and showed bias against the appellant in this case as this is what manifests from all the outburst, he has infused in his judgment.

“Learned trial judge showed in his comments, the influence of an abnormal desire all inclination to pursue a predetermined line of action against the appellant.

“This no doubt is an influence of bias against the appellant. There is no way the learned trial judge can be seen to be detached from the malice against the appellant in the case as alleged.

“The duty of a trial judge is to be completely neutral in the case before him. A judge must not only be impartial; he must be seen to be impartial to both sides.

“His duty is to sit and determine the issues raised by parties and to conduct an examination into the parties. He is not an umpire just yet. His job is to find out the truth and do justice according to law.

“Appellants have been able to convince us in this court from the records shown, and from all the utterances of the judge that there is likelihood of bias signifying that he was no freeman while the trial was going on.

“If this is allowed, it will set a dangerous precedent and that is never allowed by our constitution. Trial that was conducted in a hostile atmosphere without any regard to the constitutional right of the person accused can never be upheld.

“The learned trial judge unfortunately has shown the whole world that much was into that judgment than what was put in evidence before the judge.

“It was in this respect that we cannot ignore it. This court in its duty, set that decision aside. Judgment of the lower court delivered on 25th of February 2020 cannot stand because of the evidence of bias. It is accordingly annulled.”

Excerpts from the lead judgement delivered by Hon Justice Adah (JCA), to annul the conviction, by Hon. Justice Okon Abang, of Chief Olisa Metu, and ordering that the trial be started afresh before another Judge.

Kankara Students Released

By Adesina Soyooye

Relief has come to the Nation, Katsina State, and the Kankara community, in particular, as the over 300 students abducted from the Government Science Secondary School, have been released by their abductors.

The news of their release was confirmed by the  Media aide to Governor Aminu Masari. He said the students were on their way to Katsina Government House where Masari was waiting to receive them.

Photographs published by Saharareporters show the students packed in lorries, on their way home, escorted by soldiers.

It is not known who, or which group, finally negotiated their release, but their abduction had sparked national outrage and helplessness, especially, as they were abducted hours after the President arrived his Daura, Katsina home for a week long private visit.

There had been claims and counter-claims over which group abducted them. Governor Masari had claimed the boys were abducted by local bandits.

But the leader of Boko  Haram, Abubakar Shekau, had put a lie to the Governor’s claim by showing  the photographs, in a video, of the boys in the custody of his group. He said they were kidnapped to stop them from having access to western education.

In the video which lasted six minutes and a some seconds, one of the abducted students was seen pleading with the Government to negotiate with Boko Haram and urgently effect their release.

He warned the Government to call off all other efforts of rescue by not engaging the sect in a gun battle. He also asked that all schools which teach western education be closed down.

It is not known yet if any ransome was paid for their release or not, but Masari had earlier said that the Miyetti Allah was acting as the middleman to negotiate with the abductors.

….Details, later.
