Bank Customers Condemn Social Media Attacks On FCMB |The Source

0

By Fola James

Bank Customers under the aegis of Association of Nigeria, BCAN has condemned in unequivocal terms, attempt by some social media commentators and hack-writers  to destroy the image of the First City Monument Bank, FCMB in the face of the ongoing controversies over alleged extra-marital affairs of the bank’s Managing Director, Adam Nuru, describing the act as unjustifiable.

The National President of the umbrella body of bank customers in Nigeria, Dr. Uju Ogubunka, in a chat with BRTNews.ng, described as unfortunate the ongoing efforts by some  destructive agents on social media platforms to denigrate the FCMB brand through photo-shopped posts that don’t represent the ideals the bank had been noted for over the years.

The chartered banker and former Registrar/Chief Executive Officer of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, CIBN) while reacting to enquiries on the alleged infidelity of the bank’s chief  executive and raging calls for his sack and other issues relating to the saga, said most of the calls were not logical when analysed within the context of professionalism and implications for the financial system.

According to him, since the issues being raised remain in the realms of allegations, there is need for everyone to wait until investigations promised by the bank’s board on the matter, are completed and the findings made known, then passing judgment on the embattled Mr. Nuru can be justified.

He said: “This is, according to you, an allegation. No right thinking person relies on allegation to take action. Perhaps, the exception is investigative action. As per the question on people calling the CBN to sack the MD, CBN is not the employer of the CEO. So, action, if there is any to be taken, is not for the CBN to take.

“Again on the denigrating postings by some Nigerians or commentators on social media about FCMB, I want to say it is not the business of bank customers to take position on issues that are said to be allegations. So, it will be honourable for BCAN members to ‘mind their business’

“The Nigerian banking industry has a Code of Ethics which can situate the issue when or if investigated and results show a breach of the ethical code. I suggest that premium should not be placed on the unverified and unconfirmed “allegation”. Science and technology have advanced that determination of paternity can easily be ascertained.

“There is no need to tarnish or damage peoples’ and institutions’ names, based on allegation(s)”, Ogubunka stressed.

Over the past few days, some social media abusers and commentators have thrown caution to the winds by ‘photo-shopping’ the FCMB logo and inscribing ‘Your wife and I’ rider on it thereby portraying the bank in bad light.

Commenting on such acts from a legal perspective, a legal practitioner, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said “all those engaging in that type of act are actually ignorant of the law.

“In all honesty, such acts are libelous and if the FCMB board or even shareholders decide to take legal action against any of them, including those sharing such detestable messages through their platforms, they will all be in serious trouble.

“For God sake, how could anybody descend so low to be tampering with the image of a legal person all in an attempt to validate an allegation against the MD which is yet to be legally proved?”, the lawyer queried.

FCMB Saga: The Question of Corporate Governance and Crisis Management

0

By Chido Nwakanma

Two matters stand out in the FCMB saga. One is the issue of ethics and corporate governance. The other is the collateral damage to the bank’s corporate reputation and image.

Memes and videos are mocking the institution. Others have spoofs of their pay-off, turning it from “FCMB, My Bank and I”, to “FCMB, Your Wife and I.”

There is also the matter of the integrity of the trending narrative. What happened really? Persons claiming affinity to the parties involved say the blow out happened five years ago. At issue now is the power of the internet and social media in constructing narratives.

Someone or a group of persons used the unfortunate demise of Mr Thomas as the peg for spinning a salacious web that ropes in the bank through its primus inter pares. It is a deft and calculated sting filled from poisonous darts.

Mr Adam Nuru and his friends finally stepped out to debunk aspects of the story. They stated that  Nuru is not the father of Moyo’s two children; Nuru was friends with the late Thomas; the story is a fabrication made for social age; the alleged petition is anonymous. Note that none of the statements denied the alleged dalliance.

Nevertheless, the following stand out.

  1. The narrative has provided room for sundry operatives to sully the image of the bank.
  2. FCMB has issued a holding statement, acknowledging the issue, and assuring stakeholders that the bank is on top of the situation.
  3. There are issues of corporate governance, ethics, HR management and corporate reputation.
  4. Discussions of the matter must go beyond the sensual to examining issues of professional and ethical conduct.
  5. The FCMB Relationship Scandal straddles corporate reputation and HR management. It is not “a personal matter” of the MD, as the bank wrongly stated. Both parties were in the employ of the bank, and the relationship played out therein.
  6. The MD is the Chief Reputation Officer of every institution. He cannot effectively carry the corporate banner if his banner has horrible stains.
  7. The reputation of the bank is critical. They should work to ensure no one besmirches it further.

Adam Nuru and his paramour contravened the Nigerian Code of Corporate Governance 2018. Section 4.6 of the Code demands the following of the MD: “4.3 The MD/CEO should establish a culture of integrity, conformance and performance, which should be assimilated by personnel at all levels of the Company”.

It further states:

The MD/CEO should declare any conflict of interest on appointment and annually thereafter. In the event that he becomes aware of any potential conflict of interest at any other point, he should disclose this to the Board at the first possible opportunity. Actions following disclosure should be subject to the Company’s Conflict of Interest Policy.

The relationship of the MD with a subordinate female staff presented a clear case of conflict of interest. Most organisations frown at superior-subordinate relationships across gender. The parties engaged in a relationship with a potentially harmful effect on the boss’s ability to supervise the subordinate.

Adam Nuru - FCMB MD
Nuru Accused of Infidelity

It would also make it difficult for harmonious relationships at various levels of management. Her mates or superiors would find it difficult to relate with or censure her where necessary.

In claiming the issue, the bank stated:

“We are aware of several stories circulating across several media platforms about our bank’s Managing Director Adam Nuru, a former employee Ms Moyo Thomas and her deceased ex-husband, Mr Tunde Thomas.

“While this is a personal matter, the tragedy of the death of Mr Tunde Thomas and the allegations of unethical conduct, require the Board to conduct a review of what transpired, any violations of our Code of ethics and the adequacy of these Code of conduct ethics. This will be done immediately. We enjoin all our stakeholders to bear with us as we conduct this review and to please respect the various families involved.”

FCMB confirms in the statement that there was an affair. FCMB wonders if such a relationship amounted to “violations of our Code of ethics” and if the Code is adequate to tackle emerging issues.

Many other issues arise from the FCMB saga. They are branding, reputation management, the strength of the personal versus corporate brand, ethics and corporate governance. There is also HR management.

The bank needs to look beyond its Code and reference the Nigerian Code of Corporate Governance 2018. The Securities and Exchange Commission also has a Code for quoted firms.

The MD should step aside. The claim of an investigation is not credible while the MD sits unless the investigators report directly to the Board or the Chairman.

Before this saga, the MD of FCMB was one of the silent ones in media exposure. He had a very insignificant Top of Mind Awareness (TOMA) among bank CEOs. His affair is the excuse for “enemies”,  mischief-makers or fun-seekers to attack the corporate brand. What a way to trend!

The challenge, therefore, is ensuring minimal damage to the corporate brand.

  • FCMB should issue a second statement no later than 8 January 2021 or the end of the first business week of the year.
  • They should assure customers of the safety of their funds and other stakeholders of the bank’s health.
  • They should commission a dipstick of stakeholders’ perception and a Perception Audit in the next three months to check any lingering negatives. It is an opportunity to do this audit that most firms fail to do in Nigeria. For instance, the dipstick will tell if this is a mere storm in a teacup or has a deeper reach and potentially more significance.
  • Monitor. Monitor. Monitor. Media and non-media.
  • FCMB should change the agenda as soon as possible. They could announce a major initiative that engages customers, primarily, or what their dipstick reveals.
  • Create new and engaging content. Word of mouth is critical.

Members of NIPR Lagos had a mini-workshop on this matter on Sunday, 3 January through 4 January. Engaging and highly professional. Thanks to Toni Kan, Jide Benson, Nkechi Alli-Balogun, Emeka Maduegbuna, Olutayo Irantiola, Dotun Adekanmbi, Temitope Oguntokun, Eniola Mayowa, Taiwo Tunkarimu and Blessing Nwobodo-Itua.

The ball is in the court of FCMB. Massive fires spring from little triggers.

Umahi Calls For Arrest Over Fulani Herdsmen |The Source

By Akinwale Kasali

Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State has directed the immediate arrest and prosecution of some persons alleged to be circulating a video and audio message on social media that Fulani herdsmen were under attack in the state.

He spoke to journalists shortly after an emergency meeting with the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, MACBAN, and the State Government which took place at the Governor’s office.

Governor Umahi said the video and audio circulating on the social media were already causing panic and tension in the country, especially in the state, and that his Government will deal with anyone culpable or found to be instigating such.

He, however, alleged that the opposition party and other perceived enemies of the government were behind the circulation of such videos, with the intention to breach the existing relationship between the Ebonyi State government and Fulani herdsmen.

He said: “I have noted that the video and audio circular on social media platforms are creating fear. In Abakaliki local government area last night, two cows were killed and so, my directive is that the security agencies should wake up.

“They should arrest anybody that is trying to discuss any matter that is between life and death including the Fulani herdsmen.

“This must be taken seriously and I will not accept the delay in retrieving this fake news that is causing panic already in all over the country.

“That is not a good thing, because we kept quiet.

“I want the attorney general and commissioner for justice and local government chairmen to direct the herdsmen to keep watch over their cattle.

“I also want the local government to check if we can provide extra security around the herdsmen at the local level” he stated.

The leadership MACBAN in Ebonyi State has disassociated itself from the purported controversial video and audio.

Chairman of MACBAN, Alhaji Usman Ishaku, in a communiqué in Abakaliki denied the allegation making the rounds that herdsmen were attacked and chased out from the state.

“The audio and video in circulation on social media platforms alleging that herdsmen were being attacked and chased out of Ebonyi State, are false, fake, misleading and an orchestrated attempt by mischief makers and enemies of peace to cause disharmony between the peace-loving people of Ebonyi and Fulani herdsmen residents in the state” the group stated.

Alhaji Usman Ishaku maintained that herdsmen were enjoying their stay in Ebonyi and that there was no violence.

“Ex-Internationals Rip Younger Players Off”- Azubuike Hyacinth Laments |The Source

According to statistics by World Football Governing Body, Federation International Football Association, FIFA, after Brazil, Nigeria is the second exporter of footballers to other parts of the world.

This, however,  came to being following the influx of Football Academies and Scouts in the most populous Black nation of the World, who secure Clubs outside the shores of the country to football talents, either in Europe or obscure league around the World.

Sadly, the primary motive of some of these Agents and Scouts is to make their own fair share of the money from the proceed of the deal, not minding the future of the young Players.

Some of these Agents and Scouts rip off the players due to their vulnerability and desperation, with some of them signing slave contracts, while some are at the mercy of the Agents/Scouts who take the biggest share of the proceed with the Players themselves doing the rigorous work taking Peanuts.

In this vein, Spain based former Footballer turned Coach and businessman, Azubuike Hyacinth, frowns at the anomalies, pointing out that some Ex-Internationals who have become Football Academy owners, Agents and Scouts are also part of this awkwardness.

He said that these Ex-Internationals who take advantage of younger Players, ripping them off, see this absurd attitude as a way of life, whereas, during their playing days, they never experienced such.

Azubuike Hyacinth may not be a household name in the nation’s round leather game, but the Ex-Footballer

is the Coach of the All Star Football Team in Lagos State, comprising of Ex-Internationals who are presently unattached.

The likes of former Super Eagles Player, Haruna Lukman, Ugonna Ugochukwu, Dele Oshobe, Azeez Shobowale and others are part of the team.

Born, bred and grew up in Oshodi, Lagos State, Azubuike’s passion for the round leather game knew no bounds.

Having started his football journey with Abuede Babes Football Club in Oshodi under Coach Joseph Kadiri, he shined brightly alongside popular Nigeria born footballer who played for the Valencia Football Club of Spain, Spain Under-17 and Under-20 team and also got an invitation to  the Super Eagles team, Sunday Stephen.

Azubuike’s breakthrough however came in 2003 when he was invited alongside Sunday Stephen to Princess Bola Jegede team, and made the team that travelled to Spain for the Costablanca Tournament in Valencia, Spain.

He won the tournament in Spain , defeating Lionel Messi led Barcelona Under-16 team to lift the trophy.

After the tournament, he returned to Nigeria, awaiting prospective clients from Spain to secure a deal.

Fortunately for him, he travelled back to Spain courtesy of his Agents Eric Mita and Jose Abata, and went for a trial with St. Pauli in the German Bundesliga.

He failed to secure a deal with the German Clubside because he was an immigrant who is yet to secure his Papers.

Azubuike became a key figure in the Immigrant tournament in Spain called the ‘Mundialito Tournament’, in which his Nigerian side won three consecutive time.

This however led to him to securing a Club with Albos Energies Football Club in Almeria in the lower division. His feat with the Almeria based Clubside saw him join Pedioneras Football Club in Spain Second Division.

Bent on his  exploit and tasting other leagues in Europe, he moved to the Scandinavian, joining Valgenaharad Football Club in Stockholm, Sweden.

He, however,  joined the Super Eagles team under Coach Berti Vogts during the preparation for the 2008 African Cup of Nations in Ghana at the Malaga, Spain training Camp.

He never made the team to the Continental showpiece, though his friends, Ayodele Stephen Makinwa and Former Steaua Bucharesti football Club of Romania defender, Ifeanyi Emeghara made the team.

Seeing that age wasn’t on his side, and series of injuries was setting in, he diversified, delving into other businesses that would sustain him and his future.

“Football paved way for me and gave me a Platform, but I had to call it quit when. It mattered most and look for another source of Income.

“I got a job and started working in Spain and moved ahead in life. I was able to get the necessary documents, which has enabled me be where I am today. I can speak Spanish fluently, got the necessary education and started business of my own”.

Azubuike revealed that the All Star Team started less than five months ago, and the discipline and commitment shown by the Ex-Internationals is applausive and has prompted him to do more.

He added that the Players knew they need to be in good shape and fit in their quest to secure deals outside the shores of Nigeria which is the major reason why the Team can Into existence.

When asked if he wasnt intimidated by the status of the Players who have plied their trade in Europe, he said respect is reciprocal and the trust and confidence Reposed In him by the players spurred him to do more, and his joy is to see positive changes in their life and lifestyles.

He however advised younger Players not to be too desperate in making it to Europe or outside the shores of the country, as this is the reason why Agents and Scouts capitalize on this to rip them off.

“I have always dreamt of helping younger Players in different capacity as a Mentor, but it saddens me when you see this younger Players drinking and smoking excessively, relying on drugs to perform, failing to use their natural strength. There is no way a player would grow doing all this illicit acts”, Azubuike concluded.

FG Slams Nigerians With New Year Electricity Tariff Hike |The Source

By Fola James

Barely one month after the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC said it was reviewing the nation’s electricity tariff, the regulator has increased tariff payable by all electricity customers in the country by over 50 per cent.

The Sanusi Garba-led NERC has directed the 11 Distribution Companies, Discos to take effect the increase effective from January 1, 2020.

Customers are however agitated that the new Multi Year Tariff Order (MYTO) tariff signed by NERC chairman on December 30, 2020, came barely two months after the implementation of the controversial hike proposed last year.

The new order supersedes, the NERC said the previous Order NERC/2028/2020

In the new order, NERC said it considered the “…14.9% inflation rate rise in November 2020, foreign exchange of N379.4/$1 as of December 29, 2020, available generation capacity, US inflation rate of 1.22% and the Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) of the power firms to raise the tariff…”

Unlike the earstwhile order implemented in 2020, which exempted low power consumers, the revised Service Based Tariff (SBT) also saw increase in the rates payable by all classes of electricity users.

The NERC said the order is effective till June 2021 while a Cost Reflective Tariff (CRT) expected to raise the new cost higher will be activated from June to December 2021.

By Ayodele Oni

Is it possible for a man to arrange for the kidnap of his three months old baby using his girl friend as the kidnaper?

This and others are some of the posers being unravelled by detectives of Ondo state Police Command.

Already, a middle aged husband, Wasiu Jimoh Mamukuyomi, has been arrested in connection with the incident while the suspected kidnapper and baby are still at large.

Wasiu was nabbed at Ondo town after his girlfriend, Bosede, allegedly, kidnapped the three month-old baby girl of the man in controversial circumstances at Ayeyemi area of the town.

It was gathered that the incident occured on the 2nd of January, 2021 when Bose, an apprentice, took the baby (Gold) of her boss, Stella, Wasiu’s wife, to ATM in the town but they never returned home since then.

Stella who confirmed the incident to newsmen, accused her husband, Wasiu Jimoh Mamukuyomi, of complicity in the missing of her baby and the Apprentice.

“My husband brought Bose three weeks ago in December, 2020, to learn tailoring, saying that Bose didn’t have an interest again in learning hair dressing where she was before.

“She (Bose) has been relating well with me and my husband but unknown to me she was my husband’s girlfriend.

“She asked someone to send three thousand naira to my bank account for her, which I gave her on the fateful day (January 2, 2021), claiming she has no bank account.

“Later when the money entered my account, I gave her my ATM card with Pin for her to cash the money and she was backing my baby (Gold) and eventually went to a nearby bank ATM.

“To my greatest surprise after more than four hours that day she didn’t return and I had to raise an alarm and we started searching for her and my baby across Ondo city here. Bose was no where to be found with my baby till now.

“She left her phone with me, but unknown to me, she had removed SIM cards inside the phone and left it empty with me, no way she can be tracked down now.

“Since the suspect was known through Wasiu, he was immediately contacted on telephone about the incident, but only showed up after two hours.

According to report, the husband had allegedly confessed in the police custody that he was actually dating Bose but he never sent her to kidnapped his baby.

It was further learnt that the case has been transferred from Ondo to the police headquarters in Akureu for further investigation.

Atiku Blames Buhari for His Business Woes |The Source

Atiku Abubakar

By Akinwale Kasali

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has accused President Muhammadu Buhari of trying to destroy his business empire barely 24 hours after Intels, an oil servicing firm severed ties with him. The Port Harcourt based firm announced on Monday that the politician has divested his $100 million in the company.

Criticising the federal government for attacking his business interests in the country, Atiku said politics should be seperated from business.

A statement released on Monday by Atiku’s spokesman, Paul Ibe, said  the feral government has targeted his business since Buhari became president in 2015.

Ibe said  “There should be a marked difference between Politics and Business”. “Co-founder of  Integrated Logistics Services Nigeria Limited (Intels), Atiku Abubakar, has been selling his shares in Intels over the years.

“It assumed greater urgency in the last five years, because this Government has been preoccupied with destroying a legitimate business that was employing thousands of Nigerians because of politics.

“He has sold his shares in Intels and redirected his investment to other sectors of the economy for returns and creation of jobs”.

Intels spokesman, Tommaso Ruffinoni, said on Monday that, Atiku through his trust named Guernsey Trust International, has sold shares of Orlean-Invest Group, Intels parent company, for a sum of approximately 60 million dollars.

According to the firm “In the period between April and May 2020, Abubakar converted his remaining shares into a convertible bond that he subsequently monetised up to a residual sum of approximately 29 million dollars.

“When he requested to cash in the above mentioned sum, our Group contested to Abubakar a debt, towards our Group, of 24.1million dollars.

“Without having received any answer regarding the matter, on Nov. 30, 2020 Abubakar was informed about the set off of such sum while we made available the remaining sum of 5.4 million dollars.

“With the completion of the above mentioned transactions, the era of Abubakar family’s involvement with the Group Orlean-Intels is over,” he said.

He noted that on Dec. 1, 2020 the Group terminated also its working relationship with Abubakar’s sons, Mr Adamu Atiku Abubakar and Mr Aminu Atiku Abubakar.

“Since that date our Group does not have any contacts, neither direct nor indirect, with members of Abubakar’s family,” Ruffinoni said.

By Fola James

Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe, the first female managing director and chief executive officer of Fidelity Bank Plc has assumed office. Her tenure started on January 1 as announced by the retail lender.

The new chief executive succeeds Nnamdi Okonkwo, who retired on December 31, 2020, after completing his mandatory tenure as required by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN regulation.

The bank said on her assumption that the CEO will consolidate on the achievements of her predecessors.

Describing her as a consummate banker with strong track records, the commercial bank said customers need not worry about the transition as Onyeali-Ikpe “has been an integral part of management in the last six years and spearheaded the transformation of the directorate, leading it to profitability and sustained its impressive year-on-year growth across key performance metrics, including contributing over 28 percent of the bank’s PBT, deposits and loans.

“She is vastly experienced and has spent over 30 years working across various banks including Standard Chartered Bank Plc, Zenith Bank Plc and Citizens International Bank/Enterprise Bank, where she held several management positions in legal, treasury, investment banking, retail/commercial banking and corporate banking.

“As an executive director at legacy Enterprise Bank Plc, she received formal commendation from the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON), as a member of the management team that successfully turned around Enterprise Bank Plc,” the deposit money bank, DMB said.

Onyeali-Ikpe holds Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka; a Master of Laws (LLM) degree from Kings College, London; and has attended executive training programmes at global institutions including Harvard Business School; The Wharton School University of Pennsylvania; INSEAD School of Business; Chicago Booth School of Business; London Business School and IMD.

Onyeali-Ikpe joined the bank in 2015 and was the former executive director for Lagos and south-west directorate.
