Akure NBA Says Ordinary Citizens Have No Access To Courts

Judiciary and Court

By Ayodele Oni

Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Akure Branch, has warned that justice system in Ondo State is fast becoming inaccessible to ordinary citizens due to corruption, understaffed courts, poor transportation networks, insecurity, and infrastructural decay, especially in rural communities.

This position formed part of the resolutions issued at the end of the Branch’s 2025 Law Week, themed “Nigeria: Quest for Utilitarian Judiciary and Role for Stakeholders,” held in Akure from November 9 to 14.

Speaking on the state of justice delivery, the Association said rural dwellers remain the most disadvantaged, as many cannot access courts without travelling long distances on bad roads or paying fees they cannot afford.

“Access to justice is being crippled by failing infrastructure, ignorance of the law, corruption, insecurity and grossly understaffed courts. Justice cannot be served when the system itself is inaccessible.

”The NBA Akure Branch also condemned the persistent erosion of judicial independence in the state, accusing the Executive of holding the Judiciary “financially hostage.

“Up to 60–70 per cent of judicial budgetary allocations are withheld by the Executive. A Judiciary that depends on the Executive to function is a Judiciary stripped of its independence.”

The Branch therefore demanded full implementation of Section 121(3)(c) of the Constitution, which guarantees financial autonomy for State Judiciaries.

“An Ad-Hoc Committee is to be set up to interface with government toward enforcing compliance.Participants also warned that Nigeria still operates a punitive prison system, not a correctional one.”

Speakers at the session on correctional reforms noted that ex-inmates often return to society unrehabilitated, stigmatized and without employment, housing or education, resulting in high rates of reoffending.

The communiqué called for:

“Full implementation of the Correctional Service Act, 2019. A dedicated State department for correctional reform, data tracking and reintegration.

“More Half-Way Houses through government funding and Public-Private Partnerships, Continuous training of correctional officers, police and security agencies.”

Electoral Justice and Court Congestion:

The NBA further called for limited judicial intervention in election matters, warning that courts are overburdened at the expense of regular cases.

It recommended that: “Election disputes should be resolved before swearing-in,The Legislature enact clearer, less ambiguous laws, executive and Legislative arms shoulder more responsibility for electoral integrity, while the Judiciary adjudicates only where necessary.”

Economic Justice and Commercial Courts :

To boost the state’s business environment, the Association advocated the establishment of specialised Commercial Courts, similar to those in Lagos and Rivers States.

Speakers at the session stressed that delayed judgments halt economic activity by discouraging investment and disrupting business confidence.

The NBA called for revival of traditional courts in rural communities and urged businesses to embrace Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) to decongest the courts.

It stressed that achieving a truly utilitarian Judiciary requires collective commitment from the Bar, Bench, Executive, Legislature, civil society, and the public.

“To deliver the greatest good to the greatest number, all stakeholders must rise to rescue the justice sector,” the Association declared.

“We Rely On  Judiciary To Nullify Outcome Of PDP National Convention” – Rivers PDP

Peoples Democratic Party - PDP

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Sunday November 16, 2025, rejected  the outcome of the Ibadan, November 15 National Convention of the Party.

The Source reports that the PDP had, at the Convention, among other things, elected Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, as its new National Chairman. It also elected other National officers, and dissolved the party executive committees in five States including Abia, Imo and Enugu.

The party also  voted to expel Nyesom Wike, the Federal Capital Territory FCT Minister, and his.political soulmate Ayo Fayose, the former Ekiti State Governor  National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu and Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, factional Board of Trustees Chairman, among others over alleged anti-party activities.

But in a statement from its spokesperson , Kenneth Yowika ,the Rivers State PDP described the Convention as a sham, noting that the event held against numerous court orders that had declared it illegal.

According to the party, two Federal High Courts, among others, had barred the national Organizing Committee and the National Working Committee, NWC from proceeding with the Convention.

This is as it expressed the optimism that the outcome will be invalidated by a competent court very soon.

“The ill-advised Convention cannot withstand legal scrutiny as it is already subjudiced at the Court of Appeal. We rest our faith solely on the Judiciary and urge all members to do the same”, the party stated .

It would be recalled that the State Chapter of the PDP had, on Thursday, November 13, 2025, announced its decision to boycott the November 15 and 16 Convention, citing alleged break down in communication between it and the national body/the organizing committee as a major reason.

In a letter jointly issued by the state executive committee members, several Local Government officials and major stakeholders, the chapter expressed serious regret and concern over the decision of the National Executive Committee NEC, and the Organizing Committee to shut out both the Rivers State Governor and the entire party leadership from the preparations for the Convention.

According to the party, the National body and the Organizing Committee failed and neglected to establish any formal channel of communication with both the leader of the party in the State – Governor Siminalayi Fubara – and the state executives concerning the conduct of the Convention.

“That there was no proper communication channel between the National leadership of the party and our leader, His Excellency Sir Siminalayi Fubara, Governor of Rivers state which has consequently left us incommunicado.

“We were neither consulted nor was approval sought or obtained before our names and photographs appeared in the brochure of the proposed Ibadan National Convention of the party.

“In view of the above, we, therefore, unanimously resolved not to participate in the forthcoming National Convention scheduled to be held on the 15th and 16th of November 2025 in Ibadan, Oyo state”, the party stated.

Gov Agbu Will “Repent” And  Perform Once He Joins Our Party – APC

Agbu Kefas- Governor of Taraba State

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The All Progressive Congress, APC has expressed the optimism that the defection of Taraba State Governor Kefas Agbu would herald a new dawn for the State and its citizens and residents alike.

The Party said the move which has generated so much interest and debate will serve to raise the bar of governance and deliver to the people the dividends of democracy.

The Source reports that Governor Agbu had on Saturday, November 15, 2025, while on an inspection visit to the Jolly Nyame stadium in Jalingo the state capital formally announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic party PDP, and subsequent defection to the APC.

According to him, the decision to join the ruling party at the centre was reached after wide consultations and due consideration for the interests of Taraba people.

He informed that the formal ceremony to receive him into the APC fold will be held on Wednesday November 19, at the main bowl of Jolly Nyame stadium.

“On the 19th of November, I will officially transition from the PDP to the APC. This movement is about the destiny of the people of Taraba state ,and we are expecting many visitors for the ceremony.

“My speech at the event will throw light on the circumstances surrounding my decision, and thereafter, allow residents to judge for themselves” Governor Agbu stated.

But at a media chat with the media on Sunday, the Taraba State Chairman of the APC Ibrahim Tukur El-Suldi, noted that although many narratives are being weaved around the decision of the Governor to change party affiliation, the defection, he insisted represents a rare opportunity to fast-track development and administrative transformation in the State.

According to him, the expectation is high that the Governor will perform better while in APC  than he had done on the platform of the PDP.

“Contrary to public perception that the Governor’s performance under the PDP had been unimpressive, I strongly believe that he will do better under the APC.

“If he once had PDP blood in him, once he joins APC, a progressive party, we will infuse into him our progressive ideology and values. I assure you he will turn a new leaf and deliver even better governance” El-Suldi noted.

This is as the Chairman ruled out any significant changes in the structures and administrative framework of the party to accommodate the interests of the Governor and his supporters.

According to him, the structures of the party, at all levels, in the state will remain intact pending the expiry of the tenure of the present leadership in March 2026.

He insisted that the influx of people from other parties into the APC would strengthen the party rather than divide it as some people erroneously believe.

“From the state down to the ward level, the structures will remain intact until the official timetable for Congresses is released.

“That will be the appropriate.time for the Governor ,and other new members to build alliances and integrate fully into the party.

“We have our internal competitions, but that is the beauty of democracy. What is important is that APC remains.one strong and cohesive family”, the party chairman stated .

Although Governor Agbu had promised to reveal at the  reception ground the real reasons behind his decision to abandon the PDP, a party that has been in control of the affairs of the state since 1999, not a few are of the strong belief that his near abysmal performance has served to alienate him from the power brokers in the State.

This magazine gathered that the entrenched political forces in the state who are said to be  feeling hugely embarrassed and scandalized by the unimpressive record of the Governor, may have resolved to do away with him come 2027.

The Governor, who is also believed to be aware of the mindset of his estranged political godfathers may have perceived the APC and its national leader, President Bola  Tinubu as the last hope to save his political future.

APC Rejects Governor’s Membership Of Party

Caleb Mutfwang - Plateau state Governor

By Adesina Soyooye

For those wondering what is delaying Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang from dumping his party, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for the All Progressives Congress, APC, wonder no more.

For weeks, speculations had been rife that the Governor was on his way to dumping his political party,  PDP,  for the APC.

A few days ago at the Annual Convention of Nigerian Editors in Abuja, the State Commissioner for Information, Mrs Joyce Ramnap, who represented the Governor, on the sidelines of the Conference, had told a couple of Editors that his Principal would decamp to the APC because of pressures and circumstances beyond him, but especially, for the good and progress of the State.

However, a couple of days ago, the Governor denied any such plans and pledged loyalty to the PDP.

But now, it has been revealed that  the Plateau State Chapter of the APC rejected his membership of the Party.

According to The Whistler, Plateau APC stakeholders barred the Governor from defecting to the Party.

At a meeting in Jos, allegedly, attended by the National Chairman of the Party, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, former Governor, Joshua Dariye, former Minister who was, also a former Deputy Governor, Dame Pauline Tallen, lawmakers, both serving and non-serving, when it was put to vote, whether the Governor should be allowed to join the APC or not, a resounding no greeted it. The motion was, allegedly, moved by a former Deputy National Secretary of the APC, Festus Faunter, and it was roundly defeated.

The stakeholders said they hardly need Governor Mutfwang or any other defectors to win elections in 2027 because its  structures are strong.

Two things, however should be noted. One, most of those who stood against the Governor’s defection were PDP members before they defected to the APC. Two: the Governor defeated Yilwatda in 2023 to clinch the Governorship seat of the State.

It should, also, be noted, however, that the Governor was conspicuously absent at the just concluded Ibadan National Convention of the PDP.

How Can 58 Year-Old Wike Call Fayose His Younger Brother? – Prof Odinkalu

Professor Chidi Odinkalu, Lawyer, Activist, has mocked the speech made by the Minister for the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, during the 65th Birthday Anniversary of his friend, former Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose.

At the celebration attended by some who-is-who in politics, a number of people, including the Vice President, Kashim Shettima, made speeches in honour of the celebrant.

Yet, the speech which stood out was the one delivered by Wike, not for its content, but for the confusion it caused.

Nyesom Wike - FCT Minister
Nyesom Wike

Heaping praises on the celebrant, Wike referred to Fayose as his “younger brother”.

Eyebrows were raised as soon as he referred to Fayose as his younger brother. Why?

The celebrant, Fayose, is officially 65, which was what he was celebrating, and Wike, officially, 58 years old.

That was the riddle and the confusion which everybody – present or absent-  faced and noted, but uttered not a word.

But not Professor Odinkalu.

Commenting on that in a post on his X page, Odinkalu wondered why a 58- year old would  refer to a 65-year old as his younger brother.

He wrote: “So, @GovAyoFayose turns 65 &@GovWike, who is officially 58 yrs, calls Gov Fayose his ‘dear younger broda….’? Am I the only person who heard that?”

Not a few people wondered if Wike made a mistake, or was just jiving.

But a few have speculated that his speech, coming a couple of hours after he was expelled from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, by a faction of the Party, along with Fayose, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, and a few other heavy weights, Wike’s thoughts were in Ibadan, the venue of the National Convention of the Party where he was expelled and not on the speech he was making.

Wike Describes Those Who Expelled Him From PDP As “Intoxicated”

By Adesina Soyooye

Nyesom Wike, Minister for the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, has mocked those who expelled him from the Peoples Democratic Party as “intoxicated”.

The recognised PDP faction which gathered in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Saturday, November 15, expelled Wike, Ayo Fayose, former Governor of Ekiti State, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, National Secretary, Mao Ohuabunwa, factional Board of Trustees Chairman, Chairmen of Imo and Abia State Chapters of the Party as well as Chief Obih.

They were expelled at the ongoing controversial National Convention of the Party in Ibadan which was boycotted by the Wike faction of the Party as well as a couple of other Party big wigs including former Senate President, Bukola Saraki and the Governor of Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke over Court injunctions and counter injunctions.

But in a swift response, Wike dismissed those who expelled them as intoxicated.

In a statement signed by the Minister’s Senior Special Adviser on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, Wike said those who expelled him from the party decided to start “dirty December in November.”

The brief statement read: “They went to Ibadan to start dirty December in November. One can’t but ignore whatever comes out of their mouths.

“They gathered in Ibadan to do social party, enjoyed themselves and got Intoxicated. They are free to say anything.”

Wike, a PDP member, until this expulsion, has been a thorn in the flesh of the Party since 2023 when he failed to clinch the Presidential ticket, and was rejected by the winner, Atiku Abubakar, as his running mate in favour of former Governor of Delta State, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa.

While Wike is serving in the APC Federal Government which he worked for to win the election, Okowa has since, ironically, defected to the APC.

Obi Replies Soludo’s Mockery Of Him, Prays For God To Grant Gov. Greater Heights

Charles Soludo and Peter Obi

The Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi, has called on Governor Charles Soludo to show humility, gratitude, and compassion, following what he described as an “unfortunate and bitter” outburst by the governor. Speaking to journalists at the just-concluded Guild of Editors meeting at the Naval Base, Abuja, Obi congratulated Soludo on securing a second tenure and urged him to appreciate God’s mercies by responding to victory with grace rather than resentment.

Obi’s remarks come after Soludo provoked controversy during his certificate-of-return ceremony, where he mocked his critics by calling Peter Obi a “frustrated politician without a club,” and accused him of damaging the education system in Anambra.

“I feel compelled to respond because if I do not, I will be accused of dodging the question,” Obi said, expressing surprise at Soludo’s remarks. “On an occasion meant to celebrate his certificate of return, instead of thanking Almighty God for granting him a second tenure — a moment to demonstrate love and magnanimity — he chose to show bitterness and resentment. It was deeply unfortunate.”

Obi clarified his involvement in the recent Anambra election: “I only attended three public events with the Labour Party candidate, strictly where I was invited. At none of these events did I mention anyone by name or meet with traditional rulers, market leaders, or any other group to discuss candidates. There was nothing I said to warrant controversy or speculation,” he stressed.

Reflecting on Election Day, Obi recounted how he quietly fulfilled his civic duty, conscious of the weight of responsibility that comes with leadership. “I witnessed irregularities and disruptions that could have easily escalated into chaos,” he said. “When outsiders attempted to cast votes in our community, I stepped in and urged my people to remain calm and allow them to act peacefully. In that moment, I was reminded that integrity must always take precedence over politics. True leadership is measured not by the contest for power, but by the courage to uphold fairness, restraint, and the dignity of our people—even in the most trying circumstances.”

Addressing Soludo’s mocking remarks, Obi used a vivid metaphor from football to clarify his perspective: “On the day of the election, journalists approached me as if I were on the ballot. I reminded them that I served as governor 13 years ago and have since moved on to a higher level in national politics. In football terms, if gubernatorial candidates are in the first division, I am in the Champions League. I ran for Vice President in 2019 and for President in 2023, winning 11 states and Abuja. I play well at that level, and my record speaks for itself.”

Obi also reflected on his age and historic achievements in Anambra State. “In both the old and new Anambra, only Jim Nwobodo and I became governors in our forties. I was the first to serve a second tenure. I have no personal issue with Governor Soludo. I pray that God grants him even greater heights — if that will inspire him to show humility, compassion, and a genuine concern for the people,” Obi said.

He concluded with an appeal: “We must recognise the mercies God grants us. Leadership is not about resentment or bitterness — it is about service, gratitude, and love for our people.”

Kebbi Boycotts PDP National Convention Over Turaki’s Nomination As National Chairman

Tanimu-Turaki

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Kebbi State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic party PDP has distanced itself from the ongoing National Convention of the party in Ibadan ,the Oyo state capital.

The Chapter strangely, and curiously, too, is doing so not on account of its disagreement with the legitimacy and or otherwise of the controversial gathering, but to press home its rejection of the candidacy of Tanimu Turaki for the position of National Chairmanship of the party .

The Source reports that ,the Ilia Damagun –led National Working Committee and other major stakeholders are reportedly favouring Turaki, a former Minister of Special Duties, during former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration and a Kebbi indigene to take over as the PDP’s National Chairman.

Turaki’s perceived preference was at the root of the reason the party side- tracked other aspirants particularly those from the North West region , including former Governor of Jigawa state Sule Lamido .

But while others had since swallowed the bitter pill of exclusion from the race, Lamido one of the founding fathers of PDP has been slugging it out at the court with the party.

A statement from the spokesperson for the Kebbi State PDP on Saturday November 15,2025 Sani Dododo, said the Chapter is vehemently opposed to Turaki’s candidacy, and therefore has decided to boycott the ongoing National Convention in protest .

The party, while interrogating the legitimacy of Turaki’s candidacy, insisted that he is not a bonifide member of the PDP in Kebbi State, having been suspended alongside seven others including former gubernatorial candidate of the party in the state retired General Bello S Yaki in April 2023 over alleged gross misconduct and anti-party activities,as well as failure to meet with his financial obligations to the party.

The Party further noted that it had on October 25,2025 formally communicated to the Chairman of the National Convention Committee its misgivings against Turaki’s nomination based on the grounds of his alleged misconduct.

According to the party ,the petition against Turaki’s candidacy was jointly signed by the state Chairman Usman Bello Zuru and Secretary Abubakar Bawa Kalgo,as well as other stakeholders.

The party, therefore, warned delegates from Kebbi State to stay away from the PDP National Convention, noting that anybody that attends the gathering would be doing so on his own ,and not on behalf of the state chapter of the party.

Ibadan: PDP Expels Wike, Anyanwu, Fayose At National Convention

Nyesom Wike - FCT Minister

By Ayodele Oni

Despite Court orders stopping the National Convention of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) from holding in Ibadan, Oyo state, it still held with the  expulsion of Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, Ayodele Fayose, former governor of Ekiti State,  Samuel Anyanwu, former Secretary of the party.

Chief Olabode George, former National Vice Chairman of the party (South) moved the motion for the expulsion at the ongoing convention in Ibadan, Oyo State capital.

Hon Samaila Burga, Chairman of the PDP in Bauchi State, seconded the motion.

The PDP faction loyal to Wike had moved to stop the convention through the court, but the party secured judgement at a high court in Oyo to make the convention hold.

A few days to the convention, Mao Ohabunwa, chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Wike-led faction, said anyone going to Ibadan for the purpose of convention would just going there to relax because the exercise would not be recognized by law.

Taunting the other faction, he said those interested in going to Ibadan should relax and have fun, describing the exercise as a “jamboree.”

According to him, Anyanwu, had issued a circular, notifying members about the postponement of the convention.

”We have met as the national working committee of PDP, and reviewed our activities. We have agreed to obey all the court decisions on the Ibadan convention. So, we are not part of the exercise.

”Ibadan is a public place, people can go for anything but not for convention, anyone going there in the name of convention should consider it a jamboree.

”We won’t tolerate flagrant abuse of the constitution by some individuals in the name of a convention,” Ohuabunwa had said.

The faction’s acting national chairman, Abdulrahman Muhammad, also called on the delegates to stay away from the convention and wait for the right time.

Muhammad promised to keep mobilizing members across the 36 states and the FCT for a strong and united PDP.

”We are concerned with moving PDP forward, therefore, all delegates across the country should stay away from the Ibadan convention,” said Muhammad.

On his part, Wike had commended members of the party for defending PDP in their respective areas.

He insisted that his camp would always uphold the rule of law and would not succumb to intimidation.

Wike pledged not to betray those that believe in the constitution of the party.

”I am happy with your concern about the party in your respective areas, I will continue to support you people, I won’t betray you people,” he said.

Also former Senate President Bukola Saraki had opposed the holding of the convention and called for a caretaker committee to take over affairs of the party

Impeachment: Ondo Speaker Says Lawmakers  Threatening Him Not Attending Sittings

Olamide Oladiji - Ondo House of Assembly Speaker

By Ayodele Oni

Amidst corruption allegations, the Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Olamide Oladiji, on Saturday disclosed that the 12 lawmakers plotting his impeachment have not been attending sittings of the assembly.

This is coming as the Speaker revealed that the 14 lawmakers against his impeachment plot have the backings of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

He alleged that the some lawmakers in the House who accused him of misappropriating the sum of N50 million, are plotting to frustrate Aiyedatiwa’s administration.

Oladiji, who spoke on Saturday in Akure, explained that the dissenting lawmakers were deliberately attempting to destabilise government operations.

The 14 members of the Assembly on Friday passed a vote of confidence in the embattled Speaker amidst graft allegations levelled against him by 12 members of the Assembly.

Twelve lawmakers out of the 26 members of the Assembly on Thursday had accused Oladiji of diverting the sum of N50 million appropriated for a public hearing.

The 12 lawmakers, in a resolution dated November 13, 2025, also accused the Speaker of mismanaging the Assembly’s monthly operational grants.

The aggrieved lawmakers subsequently passed a vote of no confidence in the speaker, calling on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC) to commence investigations into the allegations.

However, Oladiji, said that the he had continued to run the Assembly strictly in line with its Rules and Standing Orders.

“We have a Standing Order in the House of Assembly, including how we relate with the executive.

“These honourable members who claim to have passed a vote of no confidence in me have not been attending sittings. As I speak, the majority of them are outside the country.

“They said they have some demands or requests from His Excellency, the governor, but our position is that even if we have requests, we should not tie them to our legislative assignments, such as the supplementary or re-ordered budget.

“They insisted that they wanted to use the passage of the re-ordered budget to drive home their demands.

“The 14 of us told them that we are part of this government, and whatever we need should be done maturely, not by frustrating government activities.”

Oladiji said the Assembly proceeded with the reordering of the budget at its last plenary, emphasising that the anti-impeachment lawmakers had the support of Governor Aiyedatiwa.

“We’re strongly together, and we have the backing of His Excellency because what we are doing is in the interest of the state.”

He begged the pro-impeachment legislators to return to the chamber, and not to boycott legislative duties.
