By Tosin Olatokunbo

Defence Headquarter has disclosed that troops killed dozens of Boko Haram and Islamic State of West African Province, ISWAP fighters along the Lake Chad area, very close to Mungonu where Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, NSA Babagan Mungonu hails from.. The successful operation was conducted by soldiers of Sector 3 Operation Lafiya Dole, in Borno state, according to DHQ, which also said some soldiers lost their lives during the gun duel with the terrorists.

A statement by the Director Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Mohammed Yerima, said some “elements of Boko Haram Terrorists and their Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) counterparts operating along the fringes of the Lake Chad and the Tumbus met their waterloo when they encountered dogged troops of Sector 3 Operation LAFIYA DOLE on Saturday, 13 March, 2021.

He said the troops were on the regular mission of clearing some villages occupied by the  insurgents when the they ran into their convoy along the Kukawa Mungonu road, where they dealt them a serious blow leading to the death of the Islamists.

According to the statement “The combined troops of the Sector which were on clearance patrol along the fringes of the Lake Chad had advanced and cleared Daban Massara and Ali Sherifti villages among other settlements before they harbored for replenishment and retrofitting. However, as they commenced the second phase of their operations and advancing along the Kukawa – Monguno road, about 14 kilometers to their base, they sighted BHTs/ISWAP gun trucks and swiftly commenced pursuit with heavy fire and deft manouver.

“In the course of the hot pursuit which was aided by air cover provided by the Air Task Team of Operation Lafia Dole, several terrorists were neutralized and their gun trucks destroyed. Unfortunately however, 1 officer and 3 gallant soldiers paid the Supreme sacrifices while those wounded in action are currently receiving medical attention at 7 Division Medical Services and Hospital in Maimalari Cantonment.

“Above is on-the-spot account of the encounter between Nigerian troops and the Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists in Mugono area and environ. Members of the public are assured that the troops are on top of the situation and working assiduously to end the insurgency and terrorism in country in line with the directives of the Chief of Army Staff”.

Meanwhile, the Chief of Army Staff, COAS Lt. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru has assured Nigerians that the federal government was poised to end insurgency in the country. Attahiru who was recently promoted to his new rank said this during a morale boosting visit to troops in Yobe state last week

“We have come to Yobe State to the sector headquarters to meet you, to get to know you and you get to know us as well. We promised ending this issue of Boko Haram,” he said.

Buma Boy

It was a dream come true for Nigerian born Music sensation, Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, as he became the first ever Nigerian to win the coveted and prestigious Grammy Awards after several failed attempts.

Burna Boy, won the ‘Best Global Music Album’ category at the 2021 Grammy Awards for ‘Twice As Tall‘, his 2020 project

His album saw off competition from Antibalas’ ‘The Fu Chronicles’, Bebel Gilberto’s ‘Agora’, Anoushka Shankar’s ‘Love Letters’ and Tinariwen’s ‘Amadjar’ to clinch the much-coveted gong at the award ceremony in Los Angeles on Sunday night.

This is, also, the second time the ‘Ye’ crooner will be nominated for the Grammy Awards.

He was nominated in the ‘Best World Music Album’ category for his ‘African Giant‘ album last year but lost to Angelique Kidjo, Beninese singer-songwriter.

The feat is yet another evidence of the singer’s heroics in the global music industry since he rode to the limelight in 2012.

Burna Boy had explained last year how his first Grammy loss left him “totally sick” and how the attendant experience informed his choice of ‘Twice As Tall’ as the title for his fifth album.

“Sick. Totally sick. But my musical Mother@angeliquekidjo told me everything I needed to understand about the Grammys. So now, I’m ‘Twice as Tall’ (that’s the name of my next album by the way dropping in July by the grace of the Most High),” he had said.

The development comes  about the same time  Wizkid won his first-ever Grammy for his role in ‘Brown Skin Girl,’ a 2019 song by Beyonce, American singer.

He was featured in Beyonce Knowles hit song ‘Brown Skin Girl’.

This year’s edition of the awards was earlier scheduled for January but was postponed amid concerns over the coronavirus pandemic.

David Adeleke, popularly know as Davido has congratulated his rivals Wizkid and Burna Boy on their Grammy wins saying it’s a victory for Nigeria and the culture.

Davido in a tweet set aside his pride to congratulate both winners from Nigeria.

According to him, whichever way one looks at it, Burna Boy and Wizkid won the Grammy won for the country Nigeria and the culture.

He then congratulated all the Nigerian winners and even though he didn’t mention the names of Wizkid and Burna Boy he indirectly congratulated them because they are part of the winners.

Pop Queen, Beyonce made history at the 63rd Grammy Awards on Sunday night, March 14, as she earned her 28th win, making her the show’s most-decorated female artist.

The American singer picked up four honors, including best R&B performance for “Black Parade,” best music video for “Brown Skin Girl” as well as best rap performance, and best rap song for “Savage,” with Megan Thee Stallion.

She beat Alison Krauss’ previously held record of 27 wins. Beyoncé is now tied with Quincy Jones for the second-most Grammy wins, while conductor Georg Stolti holds the record with 31 Grammys.

While accepting the award for best R&B performance for “Black Parade,” Beyoncé said she was “honored” and “so excited” to get her 28th award.

“Thank you guys. As an artist, I believe it’s my job and all of our jobs to reflect the times,” she said. “I wanted to uplift and encourage all of the Black kings and queens who inspire me and inspire the whole world … I can’t believe this happened, it’s such a magical night.”

Ibrahim Attahiru - Chief of Army Staff

By Akinwale Kasali

Just like his predecessor, Tukur Buratai, when he came into the saddle as the Chief of Army Staff, he boasted and promised that soon, the deadly and blood thirsty Boko Haram Insurgents will become history, within a stipulated period, the new COAS, Ibrahim Attahiru,  has given Nigerians hope and assured that the ongoing war against Boko Haram will soon be over.

Attahiru, who was in Yobe for a morale boosting visit to the troops of Sector 2 Operation Lafiya Dole of the Nigerian Army in Damaturu , told the soldiers that he came to assure them that Boko Haram would be ended within a reasonable period of time.

The COAS , while addressing the troops, said , “ We have come to Yobe State to meet you, to get to know you and you get to know us as well. We promised to end this issue of Boko Haram .

“ I am bringing very special greetings from the President and Commander – in -Chief, he is fully briefed and aware of how and what you are doing.

“ I will like to tell you that , I personally as the Chief of Army Staff I am here to take cognizance and note of the challenges you have and ensure that they are addressed to ensure you have the highest level of morale to be able to do your job and do it proudly as Nigerian soldiers .”

The COAS  said he was impressed with their performance so far , saying, “ I am very pleased , your Commanders have told me what you have done collectively as part of ‘ Operation Tura Takai Bango , how you have pushed the Boko Haram Insurgents. We are so proud of you and I believe in the second phase of that operation you will do more. ”

He said he was sure they will go out to the war front and push the insurgents so hard and bring this entire insurgency to an end .

“All your challenges are noted and I will address all the problems.”

Akure Lawyer Writes Gov Akeredolu, Advises Him Against Ranching |The Source

Rotimi Akeredolu - Ondo Communal Clash

By Ayodele Oni

An Akure based legal practitioner, Mr Kolawole Olabisi, has cautioned against attempt by Ondo State government to give out land for ranching or under any guise to Fulani herdsmen.

Olabisi, in an open letter to Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, pointed out the implications of such gesture in future, which he said would be detrimental to people of the state.

“As a Governor and a very senior Lawyer (learned Silk) sir, you’re aware of the Nigerian Land law and how lands are acquired legitimately; it is definitely not by confiscation or by killing its owners!

“As stated above, the danger in all of this allocation of land to a business that all have agreed is private one like any other businesses is not right; it will ultimately leads to chaos in the future.

“Anyone who wants to rear his animal should get his land legitimately like any other business owners and pay the necessary dues and get all documentations from the authorities.

“Creating a land for herdsmen, given their tendency for usurpation, is tantamount to creating an additional State within a State for the Fulani in your State and with time, history will point to you as the man who sold your people to another Fodiyo in the 21st Century!

“A few examples of recent in the South West will suffice: In Oyo State, the Serikin Shasha. Alhaji Mai Yasin, is now almost as powerful as any of the Obas in the State; he is the only law the Fulani would listen to.

“Indeed, Governors have to pay him a visit in his domain of recent following the inter tribal clash. Ditto for the Serikin Fulani of Lagos who is now almost revered above the Eleko (Oba) of Lagos even at the international fora!

“Indeed, Governor Babajide SanwoOlu had to visit him in his Palace of recent and had suffered the indignity of a supposed Chief Executive of Lagos State standing up to address the nitwit who sat resplendent on his throne while the Governor addressed him and even had the effrontery to address the governor seated with one of his minions holding the microphone to his mouth while speaking!

“Mr. Governor, in Ondo State, you’re about to make another Serikin Shasha in the nearest future who will disdain whoever occupy your seat then. How will history paint you then?

“Going by their antecedent, the Fulani have their own crafty ways of penetrating into their host domains, later  becoming arch enemies to their host by forcefully taking over the leadership of those territories; Hausas are regretting their acceptance with Fodiyo till tomorrow.

“The nexus of the inherent problem in the creation of grazing land is for tomorrow. Just like it’s happening in some Shashas in the South today, the Fulani would bring in hordes of their kith and kin in truckloads in their million to populate the allocated land.

“And, given their proclivity for multiple recreation, the grazing land would, in no time, be bustling with people and, soon, they will install a Seriki who will in turn install his own lesser chiefs.

“Gradually, the Sharia lifestyle and customs would be forcefully enforced, and eventually, they won’t recognise any authority other than that of their own Seriki!

“Besides, the initial land to be allocated to them would not contain them and they will spill over all the State!

“Sir, kindly borrow a leaf from those State Governors down South and in the Middle Belt who have kicked against the decision and stop this journey into a chilly future for all of our children when our lands are taken over by this action as it surely will.

“It is better we insist owners of  the cows buy or lease land and ranch their cattle according to the laws of our land since it is a private business.

“The sad reality, Mr. Governor, is that already, many people have been sent packing from their farmlands by these Fulani herders and if you go ahead and give land to private business people for their ranches or whatever now, it will have a rippling effect later on.

“Kindly recollect sir the legions of commendations your initial resolve to oppose the ills being foisted on our people by these same Fulani you’re now granting land to had attracted. How do we now take this sudden 360 degree about turn?”

Insecurity: NYCN Urges President Buhari To Declare Bandits As Terrorist |The Source

Muhammadu Buhari

By Akinwale Kasali

The National Youth Council of Nigeria, NYCN, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to declare, and label the invading bandits across the nation terrorists, as a major move towards curbing their criminal acts.

The Group in a  statement on Sunday by the Vice President, Southwest,  Comrade ‘Dotun Omoleye, claimed that declaring those behind rampant kidnappings as terrorists has become necessary for proportional actions to be taken against them by the security agents.

The NYCN expressed worries at the bandits’ deliberate attempt to frustrate the resolve of the Government with incessant, but similarly audacious kidnap of defenseless students in their schools and mindless abduction of Nigerians in their homes, on the unsafe road and even on the farm.

“President Buhari’s declaration that Jangebe, Zamfara abduction would be the last in the series of schools’ attacks and renewed boldness by bandits to strike again, where they went away with a number of female students of the Federal College of Forestry Mechanisation in Mando area of Kaduna State on Thursday night is not only unfortunate but regrettable, inhuman and unacceptable.

“This is the latest of the endless major attacks on public schools in Nigeria this year alone after the abductions in Kagara and Jangebe in Niger and Zamfara states.

“The attack on the Federal College of Forestry Mechanisation, coming just few days after gunmen attacked FAAN’s quarters in Igabi Local Government area of the state is becoming an eyesore, and a wake-up call on the government to appropriately designate these enemies of the State as terrorists following the determination of President Buhari’s opposition to negotiating with these bandits,” Omoleye stated.

The youth advocate, therefore, urged President Buhari to hasten the declaration before more citizens, particularly the youths begin to perceive and embrace kidnapping as lawful and lucrative business should government become helpless to the plights of their victims that continue to increase by the day.

Omoleye cautioned against any form of sympathy for bandits whose activities have clearly proven to pose serious threats to the peace of the people and the national security.

He, however, charged the President to show strong leadership and political will against all forms of criminality, including insurgency and banditry, by leading the battle from the front.

“Without doubt, if we do not want our nation to be overrun by violent and gun-wielding criminals by whose activities the peace and stability of our nation is becoming fragile daily; the Federal Government must be courageous enough to bandy these enemies as terrorists as they do not deserve the perceived pampering they’re currently enjoying.

“We salute the sacrifices of the Nigerian security agencies towards protecting the people but it is becoming obvious that unless these bandits are so classified, the presidential directive to shoot holders of illegal AK-47 may not yield productive results,” Omoleye noted.

Biafra: Asari Dokubo Sacks Nnamdi Kanu; On Collusion With IPOB, Christian Religion |The Source

0

By Charles Igbo

Ijaw Militant, Alhaji Muhajidi Asari Dokubo, on Sunday, March 14, 2021, declared a Biafran State out of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, thus putting himself on a direct collision course not only with the Nigerian Government but with Christians and Nnamdi Kanu.

He set up what he called a Biafran Customary Government, BCG, to be piloted by four people, with himself at head, to run the affairs of the Biafran State.

By doing that, in clear  exclusion of IPOB members, apparently without consultation with the body, Dokubo  has effectively sacked the leader of the Indigenous Peoples Of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. An epic battle  is expected between IPOB headed by Kanu,  and the now new Biafra Customary Government of the Biafra State. Kanu and IPOB have been in the forefront of the struggle for the actualisation of the Republic of Biafra, independent of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

For that, he has been at logger heads with the Nigerian Government, which  declared IPOB a terrorist organisation, proscribed it, and charged Kanu to Court for treason. He is currently in Britain, which citizen he is, after jumping bail in Nigeria.

It is unlikely that Kanu will allow Dokubo, easily, to “steal” Biafra from him, the same way Ralph Uwazuruike, the leader of MASSOB, whose subordinate Kanu was, allowed Kanu to steal the Biafra thunder from him.

The unexpected action by Asari Dokubo is, also, expected to put him on a  collusion course with Christians. The areas Dokubo carved out to make up his new Biafra are 99.99 percent of the Christian faith. He said:

“I, also call on Biafrans in the  various province of the Biafra nations in Aba, Abakiliki, Anang, Awka, Calabar, Degema, Eket, Enugu, Nsukka, Ogoja, Oji River, Okigwe, Onitsha, Opobo, Orlu, Owerri, Port Hacourt, Umuahia, Uyo and Yenegoa provinces.

“We are going to proceed to set up provincial structures of Government starting with Provincial Assemblies and Provincial governance and administration.”

Dokubo, a native of Abonema, Rivers State, a voluntarily law student drop-out, son of a late Rivers State High Court Judge, converted from the Christian faith to the Islamic faith. How he hopes to be the Head of Government in a strictly Christian area is one of the things he will battle with.

He is likely to have a stiff resistance from the people, especially, the millions of youths who, already believe in IPOB.

When one adds the above to the fierce resistance he would face from the FG, the uphill task he faces can be imagined.

Yet, he may have considered  the obstacles while birthing his new version of the Biafra agitation in a statement, on Sunday, signed by the

Head of Information and Communication of the Biafra  Customary Government, Uche Mefor.  The statement, also, announced George Onyibe as Secretary and,  Emeka Esiri as in  charge of Legal matters.

Nnamdi-kanu
Nnamdi Kanu

In declaring the new Government,  Dokubo, said he was pushed by the injustice and marginalisation of the Igbo  in various zones of the country and wants a “better life for his people”.

He said that the new Government will take up the   insecurity challenges faced by the Igbo race, and would  focus on science and technology to improve lives of  the Igbo.

The statement reads in part: “We, as people, have resolved that as Biafra, it’s time for us to take our destiny in our hands and bring freedom to ourselves and our children and the generation of Biafrans yet unborn.

“I hesitate a little but I thank God that it’s time for us to do our duty and our service to motherland, I have accepted this role. I have dedicated my life hundred percent to play this role.

“My first act today in taking this position is to name those who would be on the driver’s seat to navigate through this period of tempest, this period of uncertainty with me.

“I want to call on our brother, George Onyibe to come on board to join as the secretary of the defacto customary government of the State of Biafra. He will take care of the administrative, day to day administration of the Biafra State.

“I also call on our brother Emeka Emeka Esiri to take care of the legal needs of this nascent government.

“My brothers and sisters, the four of us will kick start the process, others will come on board. We want volunteers who are committed, we want volunteers because there is nothing anymore. We are the people who have volunteered to salvage ourselves and the rest of us.

“I also call on Biafrans in the various province of the Biafra nations in Aba, Abakiliki, Anang, Awka, Calabar, Degema, Eket, Enough, Nsuka, Ogoja, Oji River, Okigwe, Onitsha, Opobo, Orlu, Owerri, Port Harcourt, Umuahia, Uyo and Yenegoa province.

“We are going to proceed to set up provincial structures of government starting with provincial assemblies and provincial governance and administrators.

“Let nobody be mistaking that Biafra;will be worse than Nigeria. There is nothing that will be worse than what we are facing today in Nigeria,” Dokubo stated.

He claimed that his Government will attend to all the needs of the people

Dokubo: “Fellow Biafrans, our Government will concentrate on the following areas: security paramount, securing the lives and properties of our people, we are going to invest everything we have in science and technology to increase the scientific and technological discoveries, fabrications and making life easier for our people through science and technology.

“We are going to pursue rigorously the education of our people, we are going to make sure that we feed ourselves.

“You are all aware of the recent plot where they decided to stop food from the north. They failed woefully, they will continue to fail. The Government of Biafra States will look to make sure that we only eat what we can produce.”

The BGC leader promised that to achieve this purpose, there will be no war with   anybody.

“Nobody can stop us. Nobody can blockade us as they did in the first war. We’re not going to fight any war with anybody, we’re walking to freedom.

“We will not shoot any gun with them, they will prepare their weapon but they will have nobody to kill with their weapon,” Dokubo emphasised.

Asari Dokubo and Nnamdi Kanu were allies in the “Freedom Struggle.” Indeed, it was strongly speculated, but not confirmed, that he helped Kanu escape from Nigeria through the Azumini River, and into exile when the Nigerian army invaded his father’s palace in Afara, Abia State, in an incident Kanu said was meant to assassinate him. His parents, also, went into exile the same day. Both, unfortunately, died in exile, and were buried the same day in their home town.

For the records, Dokubo, like Kanu, does not live in Nigeria. He lives in Cotonou, in the neighbouring Republic  of Benin.

Group Slams Umahi, Vows To Expose Him |The Source

0

By Akinwale Kasali

Months after Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi joined the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, he has been enmeshed in controversy.

A Group, known as Coalition of Civil Society Groups on the Ebonyi Project, has vowed to expose Governor Umahi’s alleged deceitful, anti-democratic and dictatorial excesses in the state.

The group, which said it was poised to unearth the Governor’s anti-social and economic oppression of all categories of all workers in the state, pointed out that it was high time this was done, in order to let Nigerians know that the state has been turn into a slave camp.

Ebonyi State Coordinator of the Coalition, Chief Abia Onyike, stated this in a statement, on Sunday, saying no Civil Servant in the state has been paid  gratuities for six years now, since Umahi became the Governor.

According to the statement made available to the Media Sunday evening, “Plans have reached an advanced stage to commence an organised opposition and containment against Governor David Umahi’s deceitful/hydra-headed and monstrous anti-democratic regime of impunity in Ebonyi state.

“A Civil-Society Coalition, made up of Human Rights/Media Organizations, Labour/Professional Unions and Student Groups have signed up to come together and use all legal and legitimate means to checkmate Gov. David Umahi’s abuse of human rights, oppression and lawlessness in Ebonyi state. Umahi is known to have used his high office to abuse the social and economic rights of all categories of public sector workers in Ebonyi state.

“The coalition will expose the untold atrocities of Gov. Umahi and let all Nigerians know that he is running a slave camp in Ebonyi state whose inmates are getting tired of suffering from untold hardship. He has held on to the gratuities of retired civil servants since he came into office six years ago.

“Workers in the state civil service are denied promotions and when they are promoted, the financial benefits are seized by the orders of Umahi. He has no respect to the statutory rights of public and retired officers. Umahi’s extreme wickedness and callousness has caused the instalmental but silent deaths of many of these officers who were forced to starve untill they passed away.

“The Civil Society Coalition has investigated Gov. Umahi’s subterranean infiltration into opposition political parties, the bullying of his critics and the intimidation of the Judiciary/Judiciary staff which manifested in the recent interrogation of a Magistrate in the State Judiciary for granting bail to an official of an opposition political party. Umahi must drop his secret and open sponsorship of political hirelings to undermine rival political parties in the state.

“It is an act of political criminality for democratically elected leaders to spend public funds to undermine the legitimate existence of opposition political parties in a democratic society.

“Umahi’s penchant for creating crisis in opposition parties,(an ignoble act which he himself voices, acknowledges and even boasts about) is a sign of his political bankruptcy. Recall that Gov. Umahi sometime in 2020 stated openly that he will sponsor crisis in the opposition party and while the crisis persists, he will be sipping his Champagne.

“These are the issues the Civil Society Coalition will deal with because Umahi must be made answer to certain ethical and moral questions as a leader in a democratic dispensation. The Coalition will drag him to the Court of Public Opinion to checkmate his excesses so that he doesn’t get away with the impression that he presided over a banana republic.

“The Civil Society Coalition would invoke the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act to compell Gov. Umahi to give account of his stewardship in Ebonyi state.”

But in a swift reaction, the All Progressives Congress in the State described the issues raised by the Coalition, which it called   faceless, as trumped up.

The Caretaker Committee Chairman of the APC, in the state, Chief Stanley Okoro-Emegha, said the ‘faceless’ Coalition, led by Onyike, was looking for subtle ways of launching itself into the political space, adding the only thing  it is trying to achieve, is to cast the Ebonyi State Government, led by Umahi, in bad light.

The APC boss said, “We know Abia Onyike and what he represents. He is looking for cheap publicity and political relevance since he was sacked by the Governor, before the 2019 elections. One, he was too lazy and could not fit into the scheme of things in the Governor’s approach to governance.

“Two, he was a sellout and always maintained dubious tendencies. How could anybody, in his right mind-frame, work with such a person? We pity the groups Onyike is working for, and those, sponsoring him. Umahi’s policies and programmes are executed in transparency and there’s nothing to be afraid of.”

EFCC Detains Four Officials Of Ondo Assembly |The Source

By Ayodele Oni

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission,(EFCC) has taken into custody four persons from Ondo State House of Assembly, (ODHA).

This is just as investigations into an alleged financial misappropriation against some workers continue  The leadership of the Assembly  denies any fraud.

In EFCC’s custody presently are the Clerk of the of Assembly, Bode Aladeyelu, a lawmaker, Mr Felemugudu Bankole and two civil servants.

Sources disclosed that they have been detained since last Thursday.

Also detained are two civil servants, Olusegun Kayode Oyadeji and OJ. Afolabi.

Their detention is said to be in connection with a seminar, which never held in Lagos, but money was already, allegedly, released to that effect.

The Clerk, the Deputy Speaker, the committee Chairman of the House on Tertiary Education and two members of the committee were scheduled to attend the seminar.

The fund released by the state Ministry of finance amounted to N2.4million which was, allegedly, diverted to private pockets.

A source in the Assembly said that the alleged persons responded to the invitation of the Anti-graft agency and they were subsequently detained.

OPINION: Monguno’s missing $1 billion: Fraud or Freudian slip? |The Source

0

By Festus Adedayo

“Some critical questions  emanate from Shehu’s waffle and the NSA Office’s peremptory denial. What is obvious is that they are both trying to be clever by half.*The variance between what Monguno’s office claimed he said, and what was attributed to him in the media are too diametrically opposed that no one needed to be told that someone had attempted to play pranks in this episode. It is too puerile to hold the translation process of the Hausa comment of Monguno to English as the culprit, hoping it will be “and they live happily ever thereafter.” No.

As a first step, those who attempted this abracadabra should not be allowed to go away with what appears to be blue murder. Good that the transcript in Hausa on the BBC is in the public domain. The verbatim transcription of it availed the public by *The Cable, has finally rammed the nails in, revealing that Monguno could not have been quoted out of context at all.”

Unbeknown to many Nigerians who haven’t heard him speak, Major General Babagana Monguno (rtd), President Muhammadu Buhari’s National Security Adviser (NSA) secretly admires self-styled Mr. Bombastic, Jamaican–American reggae musician, singer and Disc Jockey, Orville Richard Burrel, better known by his stage name, Shaggy.

Suave and glib, with words gliding effortlessly through his mouth like okra soup skids at the slightest prodding, Monguno can electrify and disarm his audience, not with guns but with bombasts.

A few weeks ago, Monguno addressed the press on what he labeled the Federal Government’s new found resolve – after thousands of Nigerians had been killed by bandits, kidnappers and insurgents – to smoke them and their sponsors out of their hiding places.

Donning a straight-faced, stern and no-smiling visor, with cadences of a motivational speaker, Monguno thundered, in my paraphrase, that “enough is enough with activities of scoundrels and scallywags” in Nigeria.

In their graves, the trio of Mbonu Ejike, Adelabu Adegoke and Agadagbachiriuzo of Arondizuogu and Maye of Lagos, Chief Kingsley Ozumba Mbadiwe, must have chuckled. As pre-colonial, post-colonial and First Republic Nigeria burnt with the fire of political intolerance, the three politicians electrified Nigerian politics with their bombasts and sent ribs cracking with their roof-shattering, highfalutin lexicons.

Elizabethan playwright, poet, satirist and pamphleteer, Thomas Nashe, in his 1859-published The Anatomy of Absurdities, described this inflated and turgid language as that of “braggarts (who) employ the swelling bombast to out-brave out-wit better pens.”

While Mbonu, newspaper analyst and one of Nnamdi Azikiwe’s trusted political allies, enriched the political lexicon with his “boycott the boycottables,” Adelabu, also renowned for his Peculiar Mess thesis which later turned into penkelemesi, regaled his audience with his first bombast-sounding book, Africa in Ebulition, Mbadiwe, nationalist, politician, statesman and Federal Minister of Nigeria’s First Republic, as well as Nigeria’s first and only Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, was popularly known as one who authored the “Man of Timber and Caliber” and bamboozled his listeners with highfalutin coinages.

From the national campaign to institute zoning system to remedy slow national development, KO chiseled the bombast, “zoning to unzone,” and “handshake across the Niger.”

As Minister of Aviation in the Government of Tafawa Balewa and entrusted with the task to drive the initiative of the maiden Lagos to New York flight, Mbadiwe took Atilogwu dancers and Kano trumpeters on that flight which he called “Operation Fantastic.”

The NPN/NPP alliance of the Second Republic, the original Mr. Bombastic called “accord concodiale,” even as he labeled political upheavals, “When the come comes to become, we shall come out.”

In writing an epithet for Mbadiwe at his death on August 29, 1990, Emeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu said of him: “KO was grand, his actions grandiose; his speeches grandiloquent.”

As it is, NSA Monguno seems not to be only Mr. Bombastic, he is nooks.

On Friday, while appearing on the BBC Hausa Service, he detonated a bomb which immediately reverberated through the nooks and cranny of Nigeria. Saying in Hausa, Kudade dai sun salwanta – literally, the money is gone, Monguno literally set the country on fire.

“We don’t know where the money went to. The President has done his best by ensuring that he released exorbitant funds for the procurement of weapons which are yet to be procured, they are not there…Mr. President is going to investigate those funds. As we are talking with you at present, the state Governors, the Governors Forum, have started raising questions in that direction. $1 billion has been released, that and that has been released, and nothing seems to be changing. So I assure you that the president will not take this lightly. The funds are nowhere to be found and the weapons have not been seen and the newly appointed service chiefs have declared that they have not seen the weapons,” he said.

Nigerians will recall that, in 2018, the release of $1 billion for procurement of military equipment in fighting the Boko Haram insurgency was made by President Buhari. After approval by the governors, the sum of $1 billion was withdrawn from the Nigerian Excess Crude Account (ECA).

Not long after this approval, snide comments and hushed tone whispers emerged that the $1billion was money sourced for the prosecution of the 2019 elections. In the thick of this, highly influential Wall Street Journal caused a furore when it alleged that over 1000 soldiers were secretly buried at night in unmarked graves at the Maimalari barracks, Maiduguri.

“The sprawling secret graveyard in Maiduguri and an official cemetery at the base, the operational command for the north-eastern front in Borno State, now hold the bodies of at least 1,000 soldiers killed since the terror groups began an offensive last summer,” the WSJ had written. Quoting soldiers, diplomats and senior government officials who said that soldiers’ corpses were surreptitiously transported in trucks from a local mortuary at the dead of the night, WSJ said they were hurled into “trenches dug by infantrymen or local villagers paid a few dollars per shift…(at the) Maimalari barracks.”

As the insurgency war deteriorates, with huge casualty on the part of our soldiers, lack of equipment and ammunition in fighting the insurgency has been blamed for the field of blood that the Northeast of Nigeria has become. Soldiers with big epaulettes on their shoulders are alleged to be profiting from the war, cornering huge chunk of armament budgets and seeking all means to make the war interminable.

But, not to worry, the presidency has spoken. QED.

In a quick riposte to Monguno’s allegation, Garba Shehu, Buhari’s Senior Special Assistant on Media, deployed the usual suspect – quotation out of context – as the villain, in an apparent bid to deescalate Monguno’s bomb.

“I want to assure you that nothing of that money is missing,” he told Channels

Television’s Politics Today. “The reference by it in the interview with Hausa Service of the BBC by the National Security Adviser, I think, has been misconstrued and mistranslated.” Then he journeyed into a very big waffle on how the procurements that were made had not been fully delivered and that, about $536 million of the cost of the armaments was paid directly to the United States government.

The office of the National Security Adviser, a few hours after this explosive comment, recanted what Monguno said. According to it, “the NSA was quoted out of context” and “he did not categorically say that funds meant for arms procurement were missing under the Former Service Chiefs as reported or transcribed by some media outlets from the BBC interview.” The NSA office said that what he only did in the interview was to reiterate “the Federal Government’s commitment to deal decisively with insecurity and stated President Muhammadu Buhari’s continued commitment to provide all necessary support to the Armed Forces, including the provision of arms and equipment.”

Some critical questions emanate from Shehu’s waffle and the NSA Office’s peremptory denial. What is obvious is that they are both trying to be clever by half. The variance between what Monguno’s office claimed he said and what was attributed to him in the media are too diametrically opposed that no one needed to be told that someone had attempted to play pranks in this episode. The verbatim transcription of it, availed the public by The Cable, has finally rammed the nails in, revealing that Monguno could not have been quoted out of context at all.

My haunch is that, convinced that Nigerians are not thorough people and hold public fact crosschecking in terrible disdain, Aso Rock believes it could get away with this consequential Freudian slip which meandered into the public domain.

What the interview revealed to Nigerian is a Monguno who is at the periphery of the center of goings-on in the Villa. It revealed that critical security decisions are taken outside of the loops of the NSA. For instance, he claimed to be unaware that the governor of Zamfara State and Buhari had reached a mutual decision for 6,000 soldiers to be deployed to his state to stem the tide of banditry and kidnapping. Kudade dai sun salwanta may thus be an attempt to hit back at the system that ostracized him or an attempt to deploy the Samson option as response to the Villa’s lukewarm-ness to the security situation.

The truth is, Monguno is not an ordinary appointee of President Buhari. Though appointed by him, his responsibility to the presidency is only tangential. That office’s greatest responsibility is to Nigeria and its people. He owes Nigeria absolute and full disclosure of the byzantine arms purchase conundrum, even if it hurts the system. This is where the concept of national security comes in.

What Monguno was appointed to secure is not Buhari per se but Nigeria. In securing Nigeria, he must stop the bleeding of our young children who are serially killed by insurgents, not because they do not have the skills but because of their obsolete weapons. We cannot afford to populate a snakes’ farm while depopulating our soldiers.

The second issue for consideration is that, no reasonable man can say that Monguno is a dunce. Or that he does not know the consequences of making spurious allegations. During a recent Cybercrime law sensitization in Aso Rock, which had Buhari in attendance, Monguno electrified his audience with his grasp, knowledge and power of delivery. That same man cannot be said not to know what he was saying.

As coordinator of all the ambits of Nigeria’s security, key of which is the military, it will be foolhardy for anyone to say the NSA does not have information either.

What Shehu, Monguno’s office and Aso Rock power apparatchik have not addressed their minds to or are afraid to own up, is that Monguno is a bomb which can self-detonate at any time. Shehu and the NSA office’s interventions were just fire brigade measures to shore up a sagging situation and save a corruption-ridden system from total collapse.

Pedigree-wise, throwing explosives and minding seldom whose ox was gored, is not new to Monguno.

Bold, courageous and a risk-taker, with that BBC Hausa service revelation, Monguno was just on a home turf.

In a leaked acidic memo dated December 9, 2019, the NSA had warned all the then service chiefs to refrain from taking further directives from Buhari’s almighty Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari. He accused Kyari of undue and dangerous interference in matters that bordered on national security. “Chief of staff to the president is not a presiding head of security, neither is he sworn to an oath of defending the country. As such, unprofessional practices such as presiding over meetings with service chiefs and heads of security organizations, as well as ambassadors and high commissioners, to the exclusion of the NSA and/or supervising ministers are a violation of the Constitution and directly undermine the authority of Mr President,” he had said.

Not up to months after Kyari’s unfortunate death, facts which validated Monguno’s claim began to sidle out.

So how will the NSA not know that there were procurement problems in the weaponry allegedly paid for by the Nigerian Army? Worse still, is it conceivable that the NSA was unaware of a said diplomatic imbroglio between Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) that was claimed to be delaying the delivery of the arms? How would the Nigerian Minister of Defence hold a meeting with the Ambassador of the UAE to Nigeria, a la Shehu, on the alleged delay, without the knowledge of the NSA? It is a confirmation that he is probably sidelined, the naivety of which he displayed in the kudade dai sun salwanta interview.

If you properly articulate all the back and forth on the $1 billion withdrawn from ECA and place them side by side the weaponry disaster that has obviously led to hundreds of deaths of our soldiers who have been killed between the 2018 date of withdrawal of the $1 billion for arms purchase and now by insurgents, you will realize the need for Monguno to come clean with the facts.

General Segun Adeniyi spoke about the paucity of arms to fight at the war front, despite this selfsame $1 billion withdrawal and was recompensed with military trial and demotion. Until Monguno thawed that ice, neither Buhari nor anyone in the presidency was bothered enough to ask questions.

Even the Buhari lickspittle National Mis-Assembly was too supine to bother about such “trivia.” After summoning the ex-Service Chiefs to a forum where they could properly give accounts and they stubbornly refused to appear, the same National Mis-Assembly cleared them when the president nominated them for nebulous ambassadorial postings.

We must thank Buhari for giving us a man who is like nooks as NSA; a man whose stubbornness, probable loyalty to Nigeria rather than to the President, or because he is prone to frequent Freudian slips, give us periodic insights into the damp recesses of the Nigerian power architecture. We may however be dealing with intra-systemic rebellion.

For the sake of our children, brothers and fathers fighting Boko Haram insurgents, literally with their bare hands, we must get to the roots of this arms purchase, mis-purchase or nil-purchase matter.

Group Issues 21-Day Ultimatum to Enugu Assembly to Kill Ex-governors’ Pension Bill |The Source

Enugu State House of Assembly

A South East sociopolitical group, the Save Enugu Group (SEG) has issued a 21-day ultimatum to the State House of Assembly to kill a Bill seeking for a law to provide life pension for former governors and deputy governors of Enugu State.

The group, in a statement signed by its National  Coordinator, Chief Willy Ezugwu, said the Bill  which has passed its first reading must be killed immediately by the state lawmakers for the peace and tranquility in the state’s political arena to be sustained.

SEG said it’s already mobilising “conscious citizens, civil society groups and labour unions in the state to shut down Enugu State House of Assembly for as long as it will take to kill this most insensitive bill.”

According to the group, “it will be a betrayal of the trust the ordinary people of Enugu bestowed in their representatives serving as lawmakers to pass such outdated bill.

“It is shocking that while a state like Lagos, with high internally generated revenue (IGR) that runs into billions of naira monthly, has abolished pensions for former governors, the Enugu State House of Assembly allowed such a bill to pass first reading when such a law will deplete the meager Enugu State revenue to the tune of over N2 billion annually.

“It’s more disheartening to discover that the proposed law is an executive bill.

“More worrisome is the provision in the bill for medical allowance not exceeding N12 million per annum for one surviving spouse of a former Governor, “provided that such spouse was married to the governor while in office”.

“What is more unfortunate in the bill is the provision seeking to mandate the state government to provide three vehicles for ex-governors and replace them every four years.

Also very insulting to the sensibilities of the suffering masses is the provisions that when a former governor or former deputy governor dies, the state government should make “adequate arrangement and bear the financial responsibility” for his/her burial;
“And that the state government should pay “a condolence allowance of a sum equivalent to the annual basic salary of the incumbent” Governor or Deputy Governor to his next of kin.

“This is a country where people that served their states as civil servants for over 30 years are struggling to get their terminal benefits while a governor or his deputy who may have spent eight years, or even less, will be buried at the state government’s expense and the next of kin paid thereafter.

“It is very unfortunate and we call on the Enugu State House of Assembly to kill the bill within the next 21 days or face the wrath of the citizens.

“In addition to other legal measures, we shall mobilise and guide all constituents in the state constituencies to immediately initiate the process of recalling their representatives at the state House of Assembly in the event that the lawmakers failed to kill the bill.

“To pass such a bill into law, the State Assembly must include a provision for all retired state civil servants to receive exactly same retirement benefits as the Governor and the deputy, including the exact condolence allowance to the next of kins of all retired civil servants in Enugu State”, the group demanded.
