Imo Traditional Ruler Attacks Okorocha On Board Aircraft; Ex-Gov Slams Him |The Source

Eze Cletus Ilomuanya and Rochas Okorocha

By Charles Igbo

A drama of the absurd played out aboard an Air Peace Airline Aircraft headed to Abuja from the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, on Sunday, March 28.

A two-time Governor of Imo State, now the Senator, representing Imo West, Rochas Okorocha, was  attacked by a Traditional Ruler, Eze Cletus Ilomuanya.

Ilomuanya was a one-time Chairman of the Imo Council  of Traditional Rulers, as well as that of the South-east.

The ugly incident, which started as a rumour, was neither confirmed nor denied by Okorocha. But in a strongly worded statement released by his media aide, Sam Onwuemeodo, Okorocha slammed Ilomuanya for being unruly, and praised his principal, Okorocha, for remaining calm and peaceful.

Between Okorocha and Ilomuanya, there is no love lost. Okorocha, in a manner described by many as vindictive, not only removed Ilomuanya as the Chairman of the Imo Council of Traditional Rulers, 24 hours after he was sworn-in as Governor in 2011, but also dethroned him as a Traditional Ruler, later,  installing another in his place.

Ilomuanya courted Okorocha’s anger by openly supporting the re-election bid of former Governor Ikedi Ohakim, citing the Imo Charter of  Equity on the rotation of the Governorship seat among the three Senatorial zone of the State.

Ohakim, from Okigwe zone, was expected to complete a second term. But Okorocha, from Orlu zone, from where Chief Achike Udenwa who had just completed  eight years in office, swept Ohakim out of office, flying the APGA flag. Ohakim was flying the PDP flag.

A huge number of Traditional Rulers in the South-east, especially, in Imo, find it difficult to isolate themselves from partisan politics. Ilomuanya’s replacement, by Okorocha,  as the Chairman of Imo Traditional Council, Eze Samuel Ohiri, fared no better than Ilomuanya. It was a case of the pot calling the kettle black.

Ilomuanya took to legal action to reclaim both positions, including his stool. But Okorocha, as was his habit, as Governor, disobeyed all Court orders, upto the Appeal Court to reinstate Ilomuanya to his office. One of the reasons people laugh when the Governor flaunts legal papers now is that he never obeyed any while he was in office

Apparently, the bitter “fight” between the two of them, from same  Orlu zone, extended on board the aircraft.

Eye witness accounts say Ilomuanya  accosted Okorocha  who was, coincidentally, sitting next to him, with  rage,  saying he didn’t want to see him near him.

Said the account, now trending, “What started as a mellow drama, all of a sudden snowballed into a full fledged confrontation inside the aircraft.”

The Royal Father was said to have, allegedly, descended on Okorocha with his walking stick. Could be an exaggeration there, because that would be a criminal assault. But the quick intervention of  the crew, led by the Captain, it is  reported, saved  the ex-Governor from an outright assault.

Okorocha was said to have been shaken by the incident, and quickly relocated to another seat.

Eze Ilomuanya  warned  him to “stay away from Orlu if he truly wants peace to reign.”

But in the  strongly worded Press Release Onwuemeodo entilted, Re-Breaking Sunday News, Senator Okorocha Humiliated Aboard Aircraft he  said the person who posted the story on the Social media, ended up  maligning the Traditional Ruler instead of Senator Okorocha.

“In trying to malign Okorocha, he succeeded or ended up crucifying Cletus llomuanya.”

Excerpts from the statement:

“There has been a trending trash with the Referenced title or caption.

“Unfortunately, everything has become breaking news,  with the advent of the social media.

“While others were in the Church worshipping the Almighty God, one of the  “Sadducees” was busy posting or circulating what he felt was a breaking news. And his target was Okorocha.

“But in trying to malign Okorocha, he succeeded or ended up in “crucifying” Cletus llomuanya.

“Again, ( emphasis),  in their sleepless or relentless attempts to get at  Senator Rochas Okorocha, they  succeeded in inflicting deep cuts on  Cletus llomuanya.

“We would not have bothered for a reaction,  if llomuanya or any of his aides,, had swiftly reacted to say,  whether the reported incident happened or not . And if it happened , what really transpired.

“The little minded element behind the story,  wrote, ‘….Eze Cletus llomuanya aboard Air Peace flight to Abuja this morning, accosted Sen. Rochas Okorocha sitting next to him, and  exploded with so much rage and royal anger against Okorocha’ .

“If Senator Okorocha had seen his brother llomuanya, and chose to sit close to him , that action should be highly commended and applauded. It showed that Okorocha had behaved not only as a Christian,  but as a Statesman . lt showed  that he had nothing personal against llomuanya.

“And if llomuanya had paid Okorocha  back, or had negatively reacted to such kind gestures ,  by “accosting Okorocha and exploding with so much rage and royal anger”, one would not  be wrong to describe  such attitudes  as disgraceful, unfortunate, condemnable , embarrassing, ungodly, indecent and unexpected from someone who had led the lmo State Council of Traditional Rulers.

“ln other words, he had showed he was not a good Ambassador of the state

“Part of the report or story was also that llomuanya, ‘confronted Okorocha and also  descended on Okorocha with his walking stick…and Okorocha hastily relocated to another seat ‘.

“Again, if  llomuanya could confront Okorocha to the  extent of hitting Okorocha with his walking stick and Okorocha not retaliating, but hastily relocated to another seat, we would only say that, Okorocha had acquitted himself very well as a two term former of lmo state,  now a sitting Senator and a worthy Ambassador of the state and the nation. He had shown character worthy of emulation .

“And while llomuanya’s actions,  could again  be described as disgraceful, unfortunate, regrettable and thuggery on Air. And should be condemned by all men and women of decency.

“The whole scenario had,  once more , confirmed Okorocha’s peaceful dispositions. His penchant or love  for peace . His principle of live and let others  live. And that was why,  as lmo Governor for 8 years,  he never had any personal confrontation with any one . He never  chased or pursued or chastised his critics.  Rather, he loved them .

“llomuanya could also appreciate the maturity Okorocha exhibited and apologise to him since by  ‘strength shall no man prevail’

“We are also  aware or not unmindful of the fact that,  those who want appointments in the camphope government in the state or those who want to be reinstated as traditional rulers or those who want to return as chairmen of the state council of Traditional Rulers,  have told themselves that the easiest way or method to adopt to achieve their aims or ambitions,  would be to insult or attack Okorocha, leveraging on the hostility of the government in the state now ,  against Okorocha and his family.  But time is of great essence in human endeavours. ln other words, time will tell”

Okorocha has been embattled, almost, from all fronts since he left office as the Governor of Imo State on account of alleged unprecedented, brazen looting of the State.

Abba Kyari - DCP

By Adesina Soyooye

One of Nigeria Police Force’s best when it comes to the cracking of murder cases, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, has arrived Makurdi, Benue State to investigate the attempt on the life of Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom.

Ortom was attacked on his farm along the Makurdi-Gboko road by, according to him, alleged Mjyetti Allah members, numbering 15.

The Special Investigation Task Force set up by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Mohammed Adamu, led by Kyari, is to continue  the ongoing investigation into  the reported attack and attempted murder of the Ortom.

The team, according to a Press Release by Force Spokesperson, CP Frank Mba, “led by a no-nonsense investigator, Kyari,  – consists of operatives from the Tactical Investigation Units of the Force Intelligence Bureau (FIB) and other experienced, crack detectives with specialized competencies in crime scene investigation and reconstruction, ballistics, fingerprint analysis and other core areas of forensics.

“The Team is expected to take over and consolidate all on-going investigation into the incident. The Team is also expected to investigate all angles of the reported attack with a view to ensuring that all persons empirically linked to the incident are apprehended and brought to book”.

Mba also disclosed that the IGP charged the team “to be professional, thorough and clinical in their investigations.”

The attack on the Governor attracted outrage across the country, but the Leadership of the Miyetti Allah denied any involvement.

A couple of days after the attack, a group, Fulani Nationalistic Movement, FINAM, claimed responsibility, pledging to hunt down the Governor for, allegedly,  persecuting the Fulani. Chief Femi Fani-Kayode said FINAM is closely associated with ISWAP, a terrorist group.

Ohanaeze Protests Using The Igbo As Guinea Pigs, Asks For Security Outfit In Igboland, Seeks Restructuring |The Source

Ohaneze Ndigbo Meeting

The Elders Council of Ohanaeze Ndigbo has asked for a restructuring of Nigeria, protesting what it described as the continuous use of the Igbo as guinea pigs. At a meeting in Owerri, presided over by  Amb. (Prof.) George Obiozor, President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo World  on Saturday, March 27, 2021, it insisted that for fairness, equity and harmonious co-existence of Nigerians there is need for restructuring.

In a Communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, the socio-cultural umbrella body agreed that “there is need for the different components of the Nigerian nation to come together and dialogue on its future.”

A Press Release issued by Oguwike Nwachuku, Chief Press Secretary/Media Adviser to Governor Hope Uzodinma, quoted Obiozor as saying  that the points in the communiqué informed that there has to be convocation of a robust and intellectually fecund national dialogue on the political, economical, social and cultural structure of Nigeria vis-a-vis the essential challenges the Nigerian Nation is currently confronted with.

The communiqué, Oguwuike said, also, highlighted issues of security/insecurity which has become worrisome in the country as a whole with the Ohanaeze Ndigbo leadership mandated to work in close consultation with State governments in Igboland to fashion out ways of reducing the vulnerability of those residing in any part of Igbo land.

The Elders Council noted that Igboland needs a security outfit that will address issues that are peculiar to the nature, culture, tradition, topography etc of the people and also give support to efforts of the Federal Government of Nigeria.

They frowned at the current situation whereby Ndigbo leaving in other parts of Nigeria become easy target and Guinea-pigs during hostilities, both within the country and even in some parts of Africa like Ghana and South Africa.

The Elders Council mandated Ohanaeze Leadership to fashion out ways of encouraging Government in the Igbo speaking States to become more proactive in the pursuit of policies that will boast both Agriculture and Manufacturing. The Council decried the recent national statistical figures that ascribe some Igbo speaking States as ranking highest in the number of unemployed people, pointing out that a home grown approach for tackling the unemployment monster should be pursued without any further delay.

The same communiqué emphasized the need to further pursue and implement the Alaigbo Stabilization Fund which was initiated by the immediate past administration of Chief Nnia Nwodo. They therefore adopted the report of the Alaigbo Stabilization Funds Steering Committee for the improvement and investment into the welfare and growth of Igbo land.

On Nigerian President of Igbo extraction, the Elders Council mandated the President General to work in close consultation with the Igbo socio-cultural and political intelligentia to pursue the task of ensuring that the Igbo take their turn in producing the next President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria come 2023 General elections. This, the council insisted, is only achievable in consultation with other ethnic nationalities as the elders urged every Igbo man or woman with the needed capacity to show interest in the 2023 presidential race.

Furthermore, the Council mandated Ohanaeze Ndigbo leadership to pursue a deliberate policy of ensuring a noticeable and measureable improvement in the quality of education in Igboland.

Also they noted that while it recognizes the right of every Nigerian to freedom of speech, nobody henceforth, has the authority to speak on behalf of Ndigbo except the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo. To that effect, the Elders therefore directed the Ohanaeze leadership to go into direct talks with other ethnic groups and governments at all levels on ways of finding a lasting solution to the myriads of problems facing the Nigerians nation.

Adressing the media briefly after the meeting, the host Governor and the Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma commended the efforts of Ohanaeze Ndigbo leadership World-wide on what they have achieved in a short while.

He encouraged them to look into the existing security arrangements in the various Igbo States and communities and see how best to support and equip them to continue to secure Igboland while the various Governors look for ways of more sophisticated security arrangements for the entire zone.

Bye-Election: How PDP Humiliated Orji Kalu In Aba; Stakeholders Slam Him |The Source

By Charles Igbo

The Leader of the APC in  Abia State, a former two-time Governor, and Senate Chief Whip, Orji Uzor Kalu was,  on Saturday, March 27, 2021, humiliated at the Bye-election into the Aba South/Aba North Federal Constituency.

Even though his younger brother, Mascot Orji-Uzor Kalu, a former Chief of Staff to former Governor of the State, now Senator Theodore Orji, was the candidate, yet it was Senator Kalu’s show. He was the ultimate loser.

The battle for the Federal seat was between Kalu  and the PDP, as represented by its candidate, Chimobi Ebisike.

For those who have been following Senator Kalu’s pronouncements on Abia politics in recent times, his humiliation at the polls on Saturday would come as a surprise. It would, however, not be a surprise to those who followed the emergence of his younger brother, Mascot,  as APC candidate, that the PDP candidate defeated him by a wide margin.

Many APC stakeholders in the State, especially, in the Federal Constituency which Bye-election was conducted,  were against the candidacy of Mascot. They said there was no Primary. They said he was forced on them by his brother, Senator Kalu. They asked why both Senator and House of Representatives member would come from same family, same parents.

A high profile member of the party in the State, who is from Aba, Prince Paul Ikonne, Executive Secretary, National  Agricultural Land Development Authority, NALDA, was so upset that he  issued a statement saying that the APC had no candidate in the Bye-election. He called on the people to vote for any credible candidate who has a stake in Aba.

Ikonne, also, accused Senator Orji Kalu of taking the people for a ride. “Our mumu don do”, he said, wondering why another Uzor-Kalu should represent the people.

Are they the only owners of Aba, others asked?

The APC entered the race a divided house, against a PDP which is still very popular in the State, especially, in Aba, inspite of  Senator Kalu’s boasts that the State has become APC, and would take over the Governorship seat in 2023.

In fairness to Kalu, he has made a couple of big catches for the APC in the state, including the recent shocking and inexplicable declaration for the APC, by former Chief of Army Staff, Major General  Onyeabo Ihejirika, as well as former banker, Dr Alex Otti.

Yet the APC was trounced in Aba.

Declaring the PDP candidate winner, the Returning Officer, INEC, said he, Ebisike polled a total of 10,322 votes to defeat APC’s Mascot Uzor-Kalu who polled 3, 674 votes. The candidates of the other parties, including APGA, were mere “also ran”.

APC Stakeholders in Aba, blame Senator Orji Kalu for the loss.

Bola Tinubu at 2021 Sarduana Annual Memorial Lecture in Kano

By Adesina Soyooye

Perhaps it was his flowing gown. Or he was overwhelmed by the crowd and array of dignitaries. But Bola Tinubu, former Senator, former two time Governor of Lagos State, APC National Leader, was saved from falling down flat on the floor.

The incident happened on Saturday, March 27, on his arrival at the Arewa Hall, Kaduna, where he chaired the 2021 Sarduana Annual Memorial Lecture.

The high profile lecture series was instituted by Northern Nigeria, in honour of its first Premier in the first Republic, the revered Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sarduana of Sokoto. Along with Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, he was one of the founding fathers of Nigeria. Sarduana was, along with others, sadly, murdered during the ill- advised January 15, 1966 Coup plot, carried out by mainly middle-level Military officers.

The Coup was the first in Nigeria, and altered, to date, the history of Nigeria, as it was followed by what was called a revenge coup, and subsequently, the 30-month old Civil war.

To be the Chairman of the lecture is, usually, a big deal. Whoever nominated Tinubu as the Chairman for this year’s  did him a favour. It adds a notch to his profile, especially, as it is very strongly rumoured that he would run for the office of the President in 2023. He has neither denied nor accepted his interest in the office. But the Lecture was a good selling point for him.

However, his role at the Lecture was, almost, marred by the stumble incident.

As he walked into the hall, he tripped and, almost, hit the floor. He was quickly held and saved by his aides, and a couple of guests who jumped to his rescue.

Many said he missed a step, while others said he stepped  on his flowing gown.

Whatever, the Asiwaju has been upping his visibility in the North in recent times. Last week, he visited Katsina, the home State of President Muhammadu Buhari, to condole with traders who lost their wares in a market fire incident. He donated the sum of N50 million to them. The donation was received with mixed feelings by some  Yoruba groups. They accused him of donating to Katsina, and not to Lagos traders who had suffered losses in a couple of fire outbreaks, recently.

Tinubu’s donation, however, is a far cry from the unprecedented N500m donation made by Governor Nyesom Wike to Sokoto, recently, when there was a fire incident in a Sokoto market.

Super Eagles at Benin Republic for AFCON

By Akinwale Kasali

Since 2013, the record remained unbroken. No team has beaten the Squirrels of Benin Republic at home from then. But on Saturday, March 27, in front of their teeming fans, the Super Eagles of Nigeria broke the record.

With a last minute goal, the Super Eagles punctured the pride of the Squirrels. It took  a last minute goal from Genk Football Club of Belgium Striker, Paul Onuachu, to do that, thus earning the Super Eagles a place at the 2022 African Cup of Nations tournament in Cameroon.

The team played the whole 90 minutes and an  additional four minutes, before the Super Eagles could beat the Squirrels of Benin Republic goalkeeper, to win the energy-sapping encounter.

With a match to spare, the National team have 11 Points from Five matches, availing them the opportunity to gun for a Fourth African Cup of Nations tournament title.

Benin Republic now has Sierra Leone to contend with for the second spot to qualify for the African showpiece in their last match to be played in Freetown.

A win will give Sierra Leone the ticket, while a draw will salvage Benin Republic to appear at the mundial.

Though, the Coach Gernot Rohr Super Eagles team had already qualified for the Continental showpiece without kicking a ball, following the 0-0 Stalemate between the Crocodiles of Lesotho and the Leone Stars of Sierra Leone, to dash the hope of the Leostho team.

Both Lesotho and Sierra Leone played earlier before the match between Nigeria and Benin Republic.

However, the last match of the Super Eagles against the Crocodiles of Lesotho at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos, Nigeria will just be mere formality, and will also enable Coach Rohr to give new invitees a chance to showcase their lethal skills and gun for a shirt in the national team.

Governance Is Responsible For Insecurity, Poverty, Unemployment |The Source

Bola Tinubu
Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu

By Bola Tinubu

It is an honour to chair an auspicious occasion like this.

It’s a rare opportunity to stand in this hallowed place where Sir Ahmadu Bello, the late Sardauna of Sokoto, lived. The Sardauna was more than just the premier of the Northern region, he stood among the founding fathers of our great country.

The nation-building contributions made by Sir Ahmadu Bello can never be overstated. More importantly, they should never be forgotten. He laboured tirelessly and with great tact and intelligence. Working together with other shining lights such as the late sage Papa Obafemi Awolowo and the esteemed Nnamdi Azikiwe, this great Sardauna of Sokoto helped establish Nigeria as one indivisible and independent nation. He was one of the chief architects and builders laying the foundation for the nation destined to be the leader of Africa and a model for the black race. It is upon the foundation laid by these extraordinary men that we must continue to build so that Nigeria may achieve its manifest destiny and realise the promise of a greatness too long deferred.

Let me at this point commend the organizers of this auspicious event for their consistency and perseverance in holding this lecture series which, over the years, has served as a platform to discuss issues of serious national importance. For a nation to know where it’s going, it must first know from where it comes.

The topic, Reduction of the Cost of Governance for Inclusive Growth and Youth Development in Northern Nigeria In a Post-COVID-19 Era, is more than timely, particularly, given the serious security challenges that have become one of the primary causes of despair and frustration amongall Nigerians, young and old alike. That frustration and despair are, in large part, caused by chronic poverty and the breakdown in social institutions wrought by such longstanding suffering.

In the midst of our local challenges came the COVID-19 pandemic, with its debilitating impact on the global and domestic economies. Nigeria, like many other countries, has not been spared the impact of the pandemic.

Commendably, however, President Muhammadu Buhari has been carefully steering the country through the pandemic such that the negative impact on us and the economy has not been as harsh as it might have been. The economy’s relapse into recession has ended, but we must admit the economy remains weak with too much unemployment and resources left idle.

Cost of governance is always a key factor in the socio-economic development of any nation. But it is also one side of an important coin. We must not look at the cost alone. We must weigh the cost against the benefits derived therefrom. For example, one can pay a high cost on a productive enterprise but reap a higher benefit. Such would be considered a good investment. However, one can pay a low cost but reap no benefit at all because the endeavour was inherently unproductive. This would be a waste. Thus, we must be careful in what we say and truly mean when we talk of the costs of governance.

The development of any populous nation has always been dependent on the ability of government to allocate sufficient funds to projects and programs that create and encourage enduring growth and employment. We must reject that mode of thinking that assumes government expenditure is inherently unproductive as well as harmful to the overall economy.

It is not the fact that government expenditure is intrinsically wrong any more than one can say all private sector activity is economically positive. Government can be wasteful or it can be the key component to growth just as a private sector business can function profitably or spend itself into bankruptcy. The issue is not whether government is spending money or not. The real issue is the economic utility and quality of the expenditure.

Fiscal wisdom but not necessarily austerity is required for an economy like ours in a time like this, to ensure equitable wealth redistribution and meaningful use of resources. The years have shown that the private sector is much too weak to spur the growth we need. If the private sector could manage this feat, it would have already done so. Where the private sector is too weak or unable, the government must fill the void. This means government must not be afraid to embark on an activist fiscal policy to create jobs, build infrastructure and develop our industrial sector as well as continue to improve agriculture. This means government must spend money but spend it on those things that bring the requisite economic returns for the nation.

Here, one must make the point about the urgency of the need to think outside of the box in finding solutions to the challenges posed by our unemployed youth. Because of the currency issuing power of the federal government, it is not bound to balance budgets like individuals and state governments are. Moreover, because of this currency power, federal expenditures are not constrained by federal tax or revenue intake. Just as importantly, what I advocate is something that can be applied to both the common and unique developmental challenges of the north and south so that the nation moves in unison without any group or region feeling left out or estranged from national progress.

Thus, while states and local government must shape their budgets to fit their revenues, the federal government can and should spend more to create more jobs for the youth in both the north and south which iskey to eradicating restiveness and sundry criminality among the youth. Take a look at the world. Those nations that recovered most quickly from the 2009 economic crisis and now from COVID-19 are those nations that most engaged in government stimulus spending to revive their flagging economies. This was not by accident. It is due to purposeful policy and the deeper understanding of the nature of money and a the role of a national government in saving a flagging economy. Thus, America recently embarked on US$1.9 trillion stimulus to buoy the economy. It was not said that this government spending would erode jobs but that it would create them. Thus, we should not be so against government spending. If it is for the right purposes, it can do essential things that the private sector cannot. What we should be against is wasteful government spending.

Building vital infrastructure such as irrigation and water catchment systems will help agriculture, arrest desertification and provide jobs. Only government has the power and resources to call forth such a program. Another readily available area primed for investment is the agro allied industry which, for the northern region is particularly advantageous.

Urban populations are growing but urban jobs are not. Here, government must implement a national industrial policy to encourage key industries that begin to employ this growing urban work force.

Like I said in my recent statement on the pressing issue of the herder and farmer dispute, we must appreciate that martial security measures alone will not suffice. Problems that are essentially of an economic origin must also have an economic solution. Enhanced security may be the necessary first step, but it cannot be the only step. We cannot resolve this problem by holding on to one-dimensional answers.

We must all be dispassionate in our search for solutions. These challenges are multi-faceted and so shall the solutions must be.

The issue of insecurity, poverty, unemployment and extremism have many things to do with governance, over time.At bottom we must tackle our deep and widespread poverty. If we limit government’s role under the erroneous assumption that government spending is intrinsically unproductive then we tether ourselves to failure. We would do well to more critically study how other populous nations such as the UK, US, Germany and China charted their course during their formative years. You will see that they did not adhere to small government or the purportedly free market. Government engaged in massive spending on infrastructure and education while also engaging in policies that protected industrial development and key aspects of the agricultural sector. Only when they matured and held advantages over other nations, did the UK and US begin to champion free markets and small government. We would do well to understand this history and learn what it means for our own pursuit of development.

Permit me to close by thanking our chief host, Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasiru el Rufa’i and commend his graciousness and his strong support for this event. Once again, I thank the organisers of this auspicious event. I too look forward to the contributions of the day’s speakers, led by the Keynote Speaker, His Excellency Governor Simon Bako Lalong, Governor of Plateau State.

I’m honoured and remain indebted to Ahmadu Bello University Zaria and Arewa House for permitting me the singular pleasure ofchairing this occasion.

Nigeria’s Private Sector Too Weak To Spur Economy – Tinubu |The Source

National leader of the All Progressives Congress,(APC) Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has observed that post COVID-19 revival of Nigeria’s economy should not be left for the Private Sector alone.

He pointed out that the Private Sector in Nigeria, at present, is too weak to spur the growth the country requires.

He was speaking on Saturday in Kaduna as Chairman of the 2021 Sardauna Annual Memorial Lecture.

The title of the lecture is  “Reduction of the Cost of Governance for Inclusive Growth and Youth Development in Northern Nigeria In a Post- COVID-19 era.”

Yoruba Leaders Pick June 12 As Referendum Date For Yoruba Nation |The Source

By Akinwale Kasali

On Thursday, 25th March, 2021, several Yoruba groups under the aegis of Assembly of all Yoruba Groups Worldwide met in Ibadan, Oyo State Capital, to navigate the future of the Yoruba Nation. For this, they have chosen June 12, 2021, as a day of referendum for the South-West region.

Recall that June 12 is a significant date in Nigeria’s march to democracy. It was the day the a Yoruba son, Chief MKO Abiola won the Presidential election which was cancelled by the Military under then Military President, Ibrahim Babangida. Since then, a couple of SW observe the day as public holiday, while marking it as Democracy Day. In 2020, the President Muhammadu Buhari Government also adopted the day as Democracy Day.

It is symbolic, therefore, that  these Yoruba Groups chose June 12 as the day for a referendum on  Yoruba Nation – to be or not to be.

At the meeting tagged “The Paramountcy of Yoruba Unity in Tackling The Insecurity Menace in Yorubaland”, it was unanimously agreed by members present that the Yoruba Nation and Self Determination is non negotiable.

Otunba Deji Osibogun, reading the agreement of the leaders at the meeting in a statement said it was necessary for the Yoruba people, especially the elites, to return home and protect their land from invaders.

The meeting also tasked every House of Assembly in the South-West to pass a resolution on the state of insecurity in Yorubaland.

The groups called on members representing Yoruba constituencies in the Senate and House of Representatives to move a motion on insecurity in Yorubaland within the next 90 days, precisely June 25.

They urged Yoruba groups to organise relief materials for Fulani ravaged victims while a Yoruba Central Coordinating Council was also proposed.

Yoruba leader, Prof. Banji Akintoye, who was represented by Tunde Hamzat, noted that the call for Yoruba self-determination should not be misconstrued as secession, but the call to stop the anomalies and the abuse on the Yorubas.

Akintoye said the Yoruba nation will be achieved peacefully through the building of a consensus and mobilisation of the people.

Also speaking, Ambassador Yemi Farounbi stressed that Yoruba people should be ready to defend themselves against threats to their lives.

A group, the South-east, South-south Professionals of Nigeria, SESSPN, has decried the incessant attacks and killings of the Police in the South-east.

In a statement dated March 25, 2021, signed by the President, Hannibal Uwaifo ESQ, and Publicity Secretary, Collins Steve Ugwu, after an emergency meeting of the Board of Trustees and Executive Council, the group described the situation as scary and wicked.

In the past several weeks, a number of Police officers have been killed and Police Stations and Divisions burnt down in a targeted and coordinated attack.

The coordinated attacks have been most in the South-east states of Anambra, Abia, Ebonyi and Imo. The attacks, the group  said, will definitely put the

social and economic situation in the South-east in jeopardy, and reduce the region to one where lawlessness reigns.

Following is the full statement by the SESSPN on the ill-advised attacks against the Police.

THESE ATTACKS AGAINST THE POLICE IN SOUTH EAST MUST END NOW.

“1.The South East South South Professionals of Nigeria (SESSPN) after an emergency BOT/EXCO meeting, hereby condemns in the strongest possible terms, the current targeted killings of the policemen, setting their stations on fire, and carting away of their arms and ammunitions, particularly in Anambra, Abia, Ebonyi and Imo States.

“2.This obviously coordinated and viciously executed killings of the personnel in the armed formations are grave extra-legal brigandage that must not be allowed to gain traction given its heavy collateral damage to law and order, much less be tolerated to spread and fester.

“3.We share the concerns of the affected states and call on  the Governor of Anambra State to lead the rally against this murderous binge for arms, and forestall decisively, the attempt to intimidate the civil populace, cow the police and the law enforcement agencies  to abandon their duties, and give anarchy a free reign.

“4.We appeal to all layers of governments in the South East to be united in courage to inspire the people with confidence to overcome this variant of gangsters, as they coordinate & share  intelligence to nip this worrisome embarrassment on the bud.

“5.We will stand shoulder to shoulder in support to all state actors, individuals and groups committed to eradicating these elements, operating outside and beyond the law, bent to create mayhem and institutionalise disorder.

“6 We advise that these wicked attempts to put the economic and social prospects of our states and nationalities into combustible pressures, by patrons and sponsors of these criminalities be quickly unmasked with despatch, and the culprits made  to face the fullest deterrence of the law.

“7.We urge that, given the scary dimensions of our current national history with insurgents & bandits,  their swift mutations & alliances, an inter regional approach should be considered, while states responses are supported and complimented by all with single resolve, cohesion and non political party considerations.

“8. SESSPN stands ready and determined to do all within its professional capacity,  to activate and energize the processes of confidence building and security sensitization in all its space of influence, to draw attention to the imperatives for sustainable economic and educational transformation of our regions as the critical drivers for enduring peace and rapid development.”

Until recently, the South-east  used to be the most peaceful zone in the country.

But violent and vicious crimes have taken over, and worsened with the violent attacks against law enforcement agents, especially, the Police.
