Attacks On INEC Offices: Why Ex-INEC Commissioner, Olurode, Should Be Quizzed – Uzodimma |The Source

0

In the face of the inexplicable torching, and completely razing down  the offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma, has pointed fingers at an alleged  possible suspect.

INEC offices Nationwide, and especially, in the South-east, have fallen victims to attacks by yet to be identified hoodlums to the extent that the Commission says the effect of the attacks could affect the 2023 General elections, and, particularly, the upcoming Anambra State Governorship election.

But while the Police are still investigating, Governor  Uzodimma, has directed them to a person of interest. He said that the former National Commissioner of  INEC, Prof. Lai Olurode, should be quizzed over the recent incessant attacks on INEC offices.

In a Press Release signed on his behalf by his Media Adviser/Chief Press Secretary, Oguwike Nwachuku, on Monday, May 24, 2021, the Governor said he  believes that Prof. Olurode’s inciting comments over the attacks on INEC offices were mere smokescreen to cover up what the unsuspecting members of the public may not know, but which the former INEC official knows about the attacks for which he should be properly investigated.

Prof Olurode had, in a statement credited to  him in The Guardian of Monday, May 24, 2021, said that “the court ruling that produced Governor Hope Uzodimma and the agitation by  Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) were likely reasons for the recent attacks on the Commission’s offices.”

He did not end there. He continued: “The perception that elections do not always reflect the will of the people in the country was another factor that  should not be ignored….Most of the attacks in Imo State was caused by the ill-fated election. It was more of judicial victory, because that election someone, who lacked the formidable electoral strength became Governor.”

Governor Uzodimma believes that Prof Olurode was either directly involved in the attacks on INEC offices as recently witnessed in parts of the country, or deeply connected to those perpetrating the ill.

The Governor said the only way Prof. Olurode can absolve himself from the attacks on INEC offices is if he is properly interrogated by security agents.

Governor Uzodimma noted that Prof. Olurode has shown that the years he spent in INEC were a complete waste if he could not come to terms with the role of the Judiciary in the Electoral process.

The Governor wondered how possible it is for any politician in the country to win or lose an election through the Nigerian Courts without INEC’s involvement.

Governor Uzodimma reasoned that Prof. Olurode and his likes have done great damage to the Nigerian society by playing the ostrich and feigning ignorance of how the Judiciary contributes in deepening our democracy, particularly, in an environment where electoral fraud and criminality are elevated to a faith.

The Governor, therefore, urged members of the public not to look beyond their shoulders for those destroying our democracy and of late, burning INEC offices and other government property, as Prof. Olurode, from every indication, fits the mould and ought to be made to face the law if found culpable.

Top Generals Lobby Presidency for COAS Job

Attahiru - Lt General - COAS

By James Orji

Intense lobbying has already started among top Generals in the Nigerian Army to replace Lt. General Ibrahim Attahiru who died in an air crash last Friday in Kaduna, as Chief of Army Staff, COAS.

In top contention for the COAS position are Major Generals Ibrahim Manu Yusuf, a former Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, MI Aliyu of the Defence Intelligence Agency, DIA, Benjamin Ahanotu, Danjuma Ali-Kefi, amongst others.

Before President Buhari eventually appointed the late General Attahiru in January, there were initial reports that General Hanatu Ali-Kefi had been appointed to take over from General Tukur Burutai, who retired alongside other Service Chiefs.

“There is a renewed lobby for him to become COAS after the death of his boss, by those who believe that the position must remain in the north,” an APC source said.

On his part, General Benjamin Ahanotu the Chief of Policy and Planning of Nigerian Army, who was tasked with the reading of the funeral oration of the late COAS, is also among the top contestants having occupied strategic military positions, including Acting General Officer Commanding, GOC 3 Division of the Nigerian Army, Jos, Plateau state.

Apart from the fours Generals, the magazine, learnt that various sub-national groups across the country are also lobbying leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress, for the president to appoint one of their own as COAS.

For instance, the Northern social political group, Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF while condoling with President Muhammadu Buhari on the sad incident, said the new COAS must be a competent officer who can help the country tackle the current security challenges.

The ACF, in a statement signed by its chairperson, Audu Ogbeh, said it “prays that our Lord God grants our President the wisdom to select suitable replacements for the heroes departed, particularly for the Chief of Army Staff,” because the security situation in Nigeria “calls for the best, nothing but the best.”

President Buhari, on Sunday, directed the national flag to be flown at half mast, aside declaring a public holiday for the armed forces to mark the death of the officers.

The president, it was learnt, is now faced with a serious dilemma of who to choose among these officers to occupy the position. The problems facing the president, according to Aso Rock sources, include the quest to satisfy those who believe that the new COAS should come from the south as well as others who still want the North to retain the position.

But the magazine learnt that the most important consideration of all is for the president to choose based on seniority, among the crop of qualified officers.

The list of those that have been shortlisted for the president include those in Regular Course 35 and 36 in the Nigerian Defence Academy, NDA, Nigeria’s elite school for the military. The late General Attahiru was a member of course 35.

According to sources privy to military issues, the president’s choice will determine whether he respects the tradition in the armed forces, as anything done to the contrary could send a wrong signal to the security sector.

“For instance, if the president picks a member of Course 36 as COAS, what that means is that his seniors in Course 35 will be forced to retire. This will be a great loss on the nation’s military resources, after training these Generals in top military institutions across the world, with a lot of experience to show for it,” an analyst said on Monday.

Even though the analyst requested anonymity, because of the sensitive nature of the issue and because he did not want to be seen to be taking sides, he stated that President Buhari has the prerogative as the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, to choose any General among the packs.

Meanwhile, competent sources in the Presidency told the magazine that the president is considering making his choice among the Generals of Northern extraction to fill the position.

“It’s true that there is a serious lobby across the country on the president. But President Buhari as you know him has his own mind regardless of pressure from anywhere. And as long as he’s convinced that somebody can do the job, he will go for it. But the agitators can have their say, even though the president is not contemplating picking the new COAS outside where the former came from,” a top presidential aide said.

When asked if the president is planning to appoint any of the four Generals mentioned above, he said ” that is left to the president to decide. Yes, they are all qualified but you know Mr President, he may as usual come up with another surprise. All I can tell you is that a new COAS will be appointed soon because nature abhors vacuum.”

Meanwhile, some analysts told the magazine that President Buhari now has the opportunity to prove that he’s a detribalised leader by appointing an officer of Igbo extraction as COAS. This will also ensure that the zone is represented among the service chiefs, according to those who believe that leaving out the south east in major political appointments is fueling a serious crisis among its people, particularly, youths who believe that the area has been left out in major political decisions affecting the country.

Open Grazing: FG Snubs Southern Governors, Says Asaba Resolutions Unconstitutional |The Source

0

By Ayodele Oni

The Presidency has written off the resolutions by the southern Governors Forum, arrived at during their meeting in Asaba, Delta State last week.

According to the Presidency, some of the decisions were laced with politics and personal interests, and have no constitutional backing.

The Presidency’s position was contained in a statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, released on Monday in Abuja.

The statement reads

“President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed a strong resolve to address the conflicts of herders and farmers in a sustained and lasting manner that should lead to the emergence of a permanent solution to the frequent clashes between them, as well as the associated problem of the gun-wielding “killer herdsmen.”

“The President had approved a number of specific measures to bring a permanent end to the frequent skirmishes as recommended by Alhaji Sabo Nanono, the Minister of Agriculture in a report he submitted and the President signed off on it back in April, well before the actions of the Southern Governors Forum which attempts to place a ban on open grazing and other acts of politicking intended by its signatories to demonstrate their power.

“It is very clear that there was no solution offered from their resolutions to the herder-farmer clashes that have been continuing in our country for generations.

“But the citizens of the Southern States – indeed citizens of all States of Nigeria – have a right to expect their elected leaders and representatives to find answers to challenges of governance and rights, and not to wash their hands off hard choices by, instead, issuing bans that say: “not in my State.”

“It is equally true that their announcement is of questionable legality, given the Constitutional right of all Nigerians to enjoy the same rights and freedoms within every one of our 36 states (and FCT) -regardless of the State of their birth or residence.

“Fortunately, this declaration has been preempted, for whatever it is intended to achieve, and Mr. President, who has rightly been worried about these problems more than any other citizen in consultation with farmers and herders alike, commissioned and approved an actionable plan of rehabilitating grazing reserves in the States, starting with those that are truly committed to the solution and compliant with stated requirements.

“With Veterinary clinics, water points for animals, and facilities for herders and their families, including schooling – through these rehabilitated reserves, the Federal Government is making far-reaching and practical changes allowing for different communities to co-exist side-by-side: supporting farmers to till their fields, herders to rear their livestock and Nigerians everywhere to be safe.

“The entire country is acutely aware of the strain the COVID-19 pandemic has taken on public finances, for both Federal and States.

“Still, given the pressing urgency of addressing the perennial challenges, the federal funding for the project that has been delayed is now being partly unlocked.

“Actual work for the full actualization of the modern reserve system in a few of the consenting states should take off in June.”

The ban on open grazing, as agreed upon by the Southern Governors’ Forum, has been endorsed by most groups, APC South-west Governors and stakeholders.

“This Noise Is Not Good For Imo State” – Leo Stan Ekeh |The Source

Leo Stan Ekeh3

An influential son of Imo State and Nigeria, Chief Leo Stan Eke, OFR,  has admonished Imolites to stop the destruction of the State. He said the happenings in the State should stop, adding that: “The noise is not good for the State”

He asked: “Why do you want to join in the destruction of your State when the others are moving forward.”

Eke spoke when Stakeholders in Mbaitoli Local Government Area, Imo State – men, women, youths –  on Monday, May 24, paid a solidarity visit to the Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodinma at the Government House of Owerri.

Stan Ekeh is, unarguably, one of the most respected persons in Nigeria and Africa. A  native of Ubomiri, Imo State, he is called the Bill Gates of Africa because of his foray and feats in technology.

He is the founder of ZINOX, and the biggest in Africa in his field, and  the highest employer of Certified Graduates in Imo State. He remains apolitical.

Following are his remarks during the visit where he pledged loyalty to the State Government, and the Governor. He asked Imolites to calm down to enable the State move forward, adding that nobody moves forward by inciting trouble.

“As you are fighting here, other States are progressing. Nigeria is not waiting for anybody. So, why are you destroying your ow? After building your house, you will destroy it instead of expanding. The Governor is a good man. I am loyal to him because he is the Governor. We should help him move the State forward”

I am excited that Mbaitoli is here. Mbaitoli is, technically, the biggest Local Government. Essentially our people are loyal people. We do not kick against others

Hope Uzodimma is my Governor and friend, and I am a very loyal person. As an elder now in Imo State, mine is to support what can deliver Imo State. I do not “kick”.

The Government will continue to pray for me and protect me while I am to give to Imo State. So I am  not expecting anything from the Government of Imo State.

I am just saying that we should have peace so that people like us can bring to give to our people.

I think I am the highest employer of certified Imo graduates in Nigeria. Some of them you don’t know, because we are technology people. They don’t make noise. I have Imo people who are earning 4.5 million Naira a month. I have a lot of them.

So why I am here is to say that this noise is not good for us. The Governor needs peace to deliver. I know there is hunger, but the hunger did not start from him.

People like us are ready to give. I have been giving. There is no Local Government and no Community that I have not giving without making noise.

We want to support the Governor. We want to move the state forward. As you are  fighting here, other states are progressing. Nigeria is not waiting for anybody. So why are you destroying your own. After building your house you will destroy it instead of expanding. I will support the Governor to make sure Imo moves forward.

After his tenure and he hands over to another person, I will support that person.

Any old man, any citizen that instigates trouble…It is unnecessary.  If you have problem complain to people like us. If you cannot reach the Governor, call me. My phone is open. I will call him and he listens. Sometimes he calls me by 1.00 a.m.

We want to grow this State. There is hunger. There are no jobs. Not caused by the Government but the Coronavirus compounded it. So don’t continue to fight. Give your loyalty. This is the man in power.

You need to support him to move the state forward. When another person comes, also you can support him. People like us are not party people. We support to move the state forward because if I die, this is where they will bury me.

If you are a king in the world and you don’t have a home, it is meaningless.

I am here because if my Governor calls. I have to respect him. If they bring a 10 year old boy as Governor of this State, I will greet him with two hands. That is my own law and it is a very progressive law.

But also I need to appeal to politicians. You need to help the Governor. Any society that does not have respect for elders is not a progressive society, no matter who you are. The Governor is a humble person. Onwa Oyoko has a good heart.

Mbaitoli produced the State Chairman of the Party. Even the Deputy Governor is our brother. So we have gotten some share.

Let everybody calm down. You can reach me and I can reach the Governor. Malcolm Nlemigbo used to be the richest Igboman and he is very humble. Mbaitoli people should appreciate the things the Governor has given them. The Governor is doing well. Even the ones I have not seen, people tell me.

“I am loyal to him he is my Governor. You need to give the Governor peace to use people like me. I am not expecting anything. The Governor knows he is my brother. God has blessed me. I am the biggest African in my career.

I greet you all.

FG Set To Pay Participants In Its Special Public Works Programme |The Source

By Ayodele Oni

The 774,000 participants in the Federal Government’s Speciality Public Works (SPW) programme, may have cause to smile very soon.

This is going by the disclosure that the second tranche stipends of ₦20,000 to each of them would soon be paid by the federal government.

The programme, which kicked off in January, this year, has participants drawn across all local governments in the country.

Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo, who disclosed this in Abuja, however put a clause, which is, those participants without Banks Verification Number, (BVN) would still not be paid.

The Federal Government had started partial payment of ₦20,000 stipends to the 774,000 workers in April, three months after the programme kick-started.

According to the Minister, some workers under the programme were having issues about their payments from two banks, which he did not name.

He explained that the affected banks had not met the requirements set by the National Directorate of Employment (NDE), the implementing agency for the programme.

Keyamo said until the BVN of participants of the programme were verified, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) would not credit those accounts.

“Those who have not received payments from two banks will be paid in due time.

“Until the two banks fulfill the mandate we gave them to ensure the credibility of the accounts and to make sure we eliminate fraud; until that is approved by us, the CBN will not credit those accounts.

“We want to appeal to everyone, especially those who have not received their first tranche from those two banks, that they will be paid, and everybody will be duly paid before the second tranche begins. And the second tranche will begin soon.

“We don’t want to make errors in haste, especially for me. This is a programme put under my care by Mr. President.

“I want to make sure that it is fraud-free. That is why I am ensuring that all indices of fraud are eliminated in those accounts before they are credited,” he added.

Fuel Subsidy Removal: CD Warns, Plans Civil Unrest |The Source

By Ayodele Oni

The Campaign For Democracy (CD), a pro- democracy group in the country, says it has put Nigerians on alert, to embark on civil unrest in case the Federal Government removes subsidy on fuel.

In a letter to the Chairman, Nigeria Governors Forum, (NGF), Dr Kayode Fayemi, CD condemned the call by the forum on the Federal Government to remove fuel subsidy.

At the end of its visual meeting last week, the NGF, after considering the report of a Committee on Subsidy Removal, headed by Kaduna State Governor, Malam El- Rufai, called on the Federal Government to, urgently, stop subsidizing fuel costs.

If subsidy is removed, it may raise the price of premium motor spirit, known as petrol, to as high as ₦380 from the current ₦163, which Nigerians still consider as high.

The CD, in the letter, signed by its National Secretary, Pastor Ifeanyi Odili, warned that: “If a dime is added to the price of fuel in this country, we will lead the rest of Nigerians to flush out APC from the Nigerian political space.

“Under this APC Government, Nigerians have been badly frustrated, as well, intimidated under the watch of NGF.

“Sir, you will agree with us that our fuel is being diverted and smuggled out of Nigeria by certain powerful business and political class. Sometime, ago, according to Mr Ibe Kachikwu, Minister of State for Petroleum, ‘a large volume of petroleum products is diverted by corrupt senior government officials.’

“Kachikwu said these officials connive with marketers and transport owners to divert already subsidized fuel from depots to neighboring West African countries including Cameroon, Chad, Togo and Benin. This is what CD thinks NGF should address rather than inflicting further pains on Nigerians.

“You will also recall that Nigerians took to the streets on Monday, 2nd January, 2012, in reaction to the fuel subsidy removal by the Federal Government of President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday, 1st January, 2012.

“Protests raged across the country and at the premises of the Nigerian High Commission in London. The protests were characterized by civil disobedience, civil resistance, strike actions, demonstrations. We ask again, which subsidy, differently, from the one refered to herein, is NGF talking about?

“It is surprising to us and many Nigerians that NGF which ought to be a refuge for the suffering masses of Nigeria can be seen to parade itself around with the intent to impose further hardship on the already pained Nigerians.

“Since the inception of the present APC led federal government, Nigeria’s economic and security situation has gone from worse to worst, it has been worsened, deteriorated and impaled more than the dark days of the military eras.

“The said APC government has decorated Nigerians with sorrow and unending gnashing of teeth.

“We make bold to say that Nigerians have been in frustration since the adventure of APC in government. We feel it is enough. Enough of APC misrule! We stand to reject further pains on Nigerian people.”

“Tinubu’s Aide Invited Me Through WhatsApp” – Fayemi; Explains Absence At Meeting |The Source

By Ayodele Oni

Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has shed light on his absence at  Saturday’s meeting of leaders of All Progressive Congress(APC) in Lagos.

The meeting, which Governors, Speaker, House of Representatives, Party leaders were invited was organized by Chief Bisi Akande, former interim chairman of APC.

Governors Fayemi and Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo state did not attend the meeting.

In a statement in Ado Ekiti on Monday, Governor Fayemi said he wholeheartedly supports the stance of the APC Southwest leaders at the meeting that took place in Lagos on Sunday, May 23rd, 2021 despite his absence at the meeting.

The statement, signed by the Chief Press Secretary, Mr Yinka Oyebode stated that “Dr. Fayemi’s absence at the meeting was a result of a mix up in the invitation sent out for the meeting.

“For clarity, the invitation for the meeting which was said to have been sent via Whatsapp by Mr. Tunde Rahman, an aide to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, never got to Governor Fayemi.

“The absence of an invitation for the Southwest APC leaders meeting prevented the Governor from attending the meeting, as he was not aware.

“Governor Fayemi, however, sent an apology to the meeting through former Ekiti State Governor and Minister of Industries, Trade and Investments, Otunba Niyi Adebayo; as he was already scheduled to attend another engagement at the time he came to learn of the meeting.

“Governor Fayemi, as a true democrat and Southwest leader, who is committed to the welfare of the people, is however in total support of the decisions reached by the Southwest leaders at the meeting, which include an endorsement of the positions earlier adopted by the Southern Governors’ Forum on the ban on open grazing and the need for true federalism, among others.”

Governors Fayemi and Akeredolu were in Lagos previous day, Saturday to attend the wedding ceremony of the son of the Chairman, APC, Ondo state, Mr Ade Adetimehin.

Lagos: Why Governors, Ministers Shunned APC Parley With Tinubu |The Source

0
South West APC Leaders

By James Orji

The South West parley of the All Progressives Congress, APC held in Lagos on Sunday without some key leaders of the ruling party attending. The development, close watchers of events in the region say, has further exposed the division among leaders from the zone.

Rising from the meeting yesterday, the leaders which included Bola Tinubu, the National leader of the APC and former Lagos state Governor supported the decision of the Southern Governors Forum, SGF to ban open grazing in the south but disagreed with some Yoruba leaders clamoring  for secession.

“We endorse the position of the Southern Governors taken at their May 11, 2021 summit in Asaba, Delta State, regarding ranching. We do so because such a decision will lessen tensions between farmers and herders while also helping the long-term economic viability of both the farming and herding communities,” the APC south west leaders said.

But key Yoruba leaders including Governors Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo state and Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti state, shunned meeting. Apart from the two governors, the minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, a close ally of Tinubu did not also attend.

The magazine had reported, earlier in the week, that some of these leaders will shun the meeting, which they believed was meant to further the presidential ambition of Tinubu, who had yet to declare his intention to run for the nation’s highest office, even though there are clear signs that he’s positioning himself to succeed the incumbent, President Muhammadu Buhari whose tenure expires in 2023.

While Fayemi is said to be interested in the Presidency, Akeredolu has not been very close to Tinubu due to some political reasons affecting his state. On his part, Aregbesola was said not to be in the good books of Tinubu lately, due to political development in his state, Osun where he’s in a serious conflict with Governor Oyetola, who is a cousin to the former Lagos Governor.

Watchers of Lagos politics told the magazine that the disagreement between Tinubu and Aregbesola may have been the reason why the Minister was not invited to the Governor’s Advisory Council, GAC meeting held last week in Lagos. Aregbesola was until  now, a key member GAC, made up of Tinubu’s allies who advise the governor on key issues affecting the state.

Others that attended the APC parley, held at the Lagos House, Marina, where important decisions were reached on issues affacting the region and the country, include the Speakers of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, Governors Babajide Sanwo Olu, Gboyega Oyetola and Dapo Abiodun, of Lagos, Osun and Ogun states respectively. The leaders also include former Interim National Chairman of APC, Bisi Akande, Tinubu and Segun Osoba, a veteran journalist and former Governor of Ogun state, amongst others.

Akande who read the communique at the end of the meeting expressed opposition to the separatists’ agitation by some Yoruba leaders, including Sunday Adeyemo, aka Sunday Igboho.

Part of the communique read, “The Leaders commiserate with and condole the President and Commander-in-Chief, President Muhammadu Buhari, the military authorities, families of the Chief of Army Staff and other officers who died, and indeed the entire nation over last Friday’s tragic plane crash in Kaduna.

“They express their strong opposition to separatist agitations and hate speeches. While urging those indulging in such to desist forthwith, they renew their belief in the unity, stability and sustainability of the country.

“We note with significant concern the security situation in the country. Terrorism and violent criminality threaten many areas, adversely affecting the lives and livelihoods of too many innocent and peace-loving Nigerians.”

The leaders urged the federal government to share the country’s resources equitably among the federating units.

According to them “While mindful of the resource and other constraints facing the nation, we urge the federal government to continue to make the necessary expenditures and allocate sufficient resources to enable the military and security agencies to tackle the difficult security challenges confronting us.

“For Nigeria to overcome these challenges, we must do so with unity of purpose and action. The desire for peace and the chance for a prosperous and just society is universal and transcends all regional, religious or ethnic divisions.”

They also restated their support for the unity of the country, adding that the government should make concerted efforts to address those issues causing problems among all sub nationals.  They called on all Nigerians to join hands with the government in its efforts to tackle insecurity in the country.

The communique further stated that “Sadly, many public figures have made statements that spark division and undermine the needed unity of purpose. We urge government at all levels, security agencies, and public leaders across the country to do everything possible to prevent tension so that we sustain the necessary unity to defeat these challenges to our national security.

“All responsible Nigerians must speak and act in a manner that strengthens our common cause against these common threats to our collective peace, justice and development.

“We restate our abhorrence of violence as a means to achieve either political or economic power and influence. We strongly condemn violence of any form in any part of the country, regardless of ethnic or regional identity of the perpetrators of the violence or of the victims. Government must do all it can to protect potential victims and to assist those who have previously been victimized by terrorism or widespread banditry.”

Again, Tragedy Hits The Chuba Okadigbo Family |The Source

Chubs Okadigbo Son - Pharaoh

By Adesina Soyooye

Colourful politician and former Senate President, the late Dr Chuba Okadigbo must be turning in his grave now. And so would his ex-wife, and former Minister for State, FCT,  Professor Miriam Ikejiani-Clark.

Their son, Pharaoh Okadigbo, died in Abuja,  Saturday night, in very tragic circumstances.

His vehicle ran into a trailer loaded with crates of drinks from behind, and he was killed in the accident.

For the Okadigbo family, it is one death too many. Three years ago, in May 2018,  the late Senate President also lost a son, Jideofor, in the United States. He was aged 30 years.

Pharaoh was the first son of Chuba Okadigbo and Ikejiani-Clark. They had four children together before they divorced.

Ikejiani-Clark was a lecturer at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, before she was appointed a Minister.

President Muhammadu Buhari, whose running mate Okadigbo was in 2003, during one of his failed shots at the Presidential seat, has already sent a condolence message to the Okadigbo family, bemoaning Pharaoh’s sudden death.

The condolence letter was signed on his behalf by his Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina.

Imo: 400 Hoodlums Arrested, Undergoing Prosecution – Uzodinma; Says They Are Mostly Mercenaries |The Source

Hope Uzodimma

By Charles Igbo

Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma says the State, under his watch, will be a graveyard for criminals. Innocent persons should entertain no fears at all, as he enjoined them to go about their businesses without any fear.

In an unmistakable stern voice, the Governor said that the serious security breaches which happened in the State a couple of months ago will not repeat.

Imo State, in recent months, was enmeshed in serious security breaches which resulted in violence, destruction and deaths.

In one fell swoop one night, the Headquarters of the Imo State Police Command and  the Owerri Correctional Centre were attacked. During the attack, 1,844 prisoners at the Correctional Centre, most of them hardened criminals – murderers, kidnappers, armed robbers – were released by the hoodlums, while a number of detainees were also released from the Criminal Investigation Department of the Police.

Till date, only a few of them have either come back on their own, or re-arrested even from as far away as Ghana.

During the attacks, office blocks were also torched, as well as 50 vehicles packed within the Imo Police Command Headquarters, including operational vehicles.

The deadly attacks of that night have since been followed by other attacks on Police Divisions and Stations, resulting in the killings of Policemen, torching of Police facilities and the release of detainees.

One of the most daring was a morning attack on the country home of the Governor, at his Omuma Community. During the attack, a Security officer was killed,  a part of a building torched, as was the Governor’s long owned Rolls Royce.

But speaking on Sunday, May 23, after a Church Service at the Government House Chapel, Owerri, the Governor revealed that 400 of those responsible for the mayhem in Imo have been arrested. And, already undergoing trial in the Courts, he added. He also revealed that most of them were non-Igbo, but mercenaries imported into the State to inflict pains on the people, and destabilise the Government.

The Governor did not, however, disclose those responsible for the importation of such mercinaries. However, not a few people agree that the Imo attacks were politically motivated.

Assuring “never again”, Uzodinma warned all those with such criminal intents to keep off the State as nothing would be spared to deal with them ruthlessly.
