Bandits Defeat El-Rufai, Finally Send His Children Out of School

0
El-Rufai and his Son

By Adesina Soyooye

Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, presents the face of a hard- nut. A face of indifference to the State of the Nation. A face that everything is okay. A face that he is stone-hearted;

Not moved by emotions or public opinion. Once he believes in something, good or bad, he sticks to his opinion and beliefs.

If you are in doubt, consider how he handled the abduction of the students and staff of Greenfield University by bandits.

From the minute the Governor was told of the abduction of the students, his first reaction was that his  Government would never pay a kobo in ransome money to the abductors.

Not a few people thought he was joking. They had a reason to think so.

Afterall, was it not the same El-Rufai who slammed the Government of former President Goodluck Jonathan for its alleged reluctance to pay ransome to the abductors of Chibok girls. He had said, then, that any responsible Government  would pay.

But it seems, now, to be a different El-Rufai. He has changed his views on so many issues, including his very negative views on the then candidate Major General Muhammadu Buhari.

But not many people thought he would play the hard nut with the lives and safety of abducted students.

When the abductors killed three of the students, the Governor was not moved to negotiate for ransome. Two days later, they killed two more of the students, yet ke was not moved. He simply sent condolence messages to their parents.

Then he worsened the case for the abducted students by publicly saying they had been located, and he had plans to storm the location using the Military. On the effect such a move could have on the students, he undiplomatically, some say heartlessly,  said that some would be lost, and some lost.

Most Nigerians accused him of not speaking like a parent. They said that for a parent, he had no feelings at all.

Well, not true.

Apparently, when it comes to his own children and family, there is a different El-Rufai.

Forget the assertion by one of his wives that even if she, El-Rufai’s wife, is kidnapped,  her husband will not pay ransome.

Not true.

She was just talking. She knows she is not vulnerable. She does not go where she could be kidnapped. She is safe, with maximum protection.

To prove that El-Rufai would give an arm to save any member of his family from being kidnapped, look at what he has just done.

In 2019 or early 2020, Governor El-Rufai had made a dance and song of sending one of his sons, then six-year old Abubakar-Sadiq, to a public school in Kaduna.

Deserved applause.

At that level, they don’t send their children to public schools. They send them to private schools or schools outside Nigeria. Public schools in Nigeria are so run down that they are no inspiration to any child or parent. The environment is worse than a pig’s sty. And the teachers are not inspired. They are owed several months of salaries and allowances.

So, the photograph of the Governor accompanying his son on his first day in school to register him at the Kaduna Capital School made news. But Capital School is not just any Public school, thanks to the Governor.

Before El-Rufai sent his son there, he had spent hundreds of millions of Naira, to make it a Grade A school.

But now, El-Rufai has pulled Sadiq out of Kaduna Capital School. He also stopped Sadiq’s younger sister, Nasrine, who just turned six, from resuming classes there.

Here’s why?

El-Rufai is afraid of bandits.

He doesn’t want his children abducted like the children are other parents.

So, he withdrew them from school.

Speaking to the BBC Hausa Service, the Governor said he withdrew his son, and stopped his younger sister from joining him at Capital School for fear of bandits, for fear of abduction.

He said credible security information point to the fact that, at least, three different sets of bandits had planned to storm the school, and abduct his son from there. He didn’t want to take chances. He took a preemptive action, which was to withdraw his son, and stop the registration of his daughter.

Now, he said, his son is being taught at home – in the secured environment of Government House – and only goes to the school to take examinations. He says the kid and his sister would resume normal classes when things normalise. When that will be, nobody knows.

But, it will be good to know how many security agents accompany young Sadiq to the school for exams. And it would be good to know what the Governor could have done just if, God forbid, his children were kidnapped from school.

Will El-Rufai refuse to pay ransome, and leave them at the mercy of dangerous criminals? Or, ask the Military to storm their location, and tell  their mother: If they are rescued fine, if they are killed in the process, fine?

For now, the score is: Bandits – one. El-Rufai- zero.

APC Congresses: Ondo, Ekiti Party Leaders Seek Peaceful Method Of Consensus

By Ayodele Oni

As the All Progressive Congress, (APC) prepares for its congresses at the various  levels, party leaders have been meeting to devise means of ensuring a peaceful and rancour free process.

In Ondo State, leaders have opted for a consensus method of choosing officials of the party at the July 24 ward congress.

According to them, the method will further cement the unity in the party and make it more formidable than ever before.

The State Governor and leader of the party in the state, Mr Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, who spoke during a Stakeholders’ Meeting on Friday, said a significant percentage of youths and women must be considered in the distribution of party positions.

In Ekiti state where a stakeholders’ meeting was also held, no agreement was reached as to whether election or consensus arrangement would be adopted.

A former Chairman of the APC in the state, Chief Jide Awe, had flayed the consensus arrangement, which he said was undemocratic.

Chief Awe was once a beneficiary of consensus arrangement which allowed him to head the party for ten years.

Speaking at the stakeholders meeting held in Ado Ekiti on Friday, former Governor Niyi Adebayo, towed the line of Governor Akeredolu of Ondo state as he made a case for a generational shift in politics and governance to allow for the greater participation of younger people.

Otunba Adebayo, who was Governor of Ekiti state at the age of 41, said that at his age, fatigue sometimes sets in because of the grueling long hours of meetings and travels associated with politics and governance.

Otunba Adebayo, who is currently Minister for Trade and Investment, used the opportunity of the meeting to refute insinuations of a rift between him and Governor Fayemi, saying “Kayode Fayemi and I are one.

“There is no division between us. We always work together and are in constant consultation on matters relating to politics and governance in the state and nationally.”

Otunba Adebayo also denied ever nursing a second term ambition as Governor, saying  Governor Fayemi’s first term was his own second term, and that he is now in his third term through Governor Fayemi’s current tenure.

He emphasized the need for continuity and consolidation, when he said that by the time he and Governor Fayemi, with the support of the party elders and members, successfully install a successor in the 2022 gubernatorial election, he would commence his fourth term in office.

In his remarks, Governor Kayode Fayemi explained that there is only one APC structure in Ekiti, and admonished party members to go back to the grassroots and be more inclusive and participatory in politics across the state, and eschew greed and the imposition of the will of a few over the majority.

Dr Fayemi has been consistently very vocal and unapologetic about the need for young people to step up to the plate and organize towards deepening their participation in politics and governance in the country.

He however admonished young people not to approach politics with a sense of entitlement, but rather leverage their numerical strength, ideas, and energy, to bring about change.

Excited IGP, Baba, Says Peace Has Returned To Imo, Gives Credit to Uzodimma

0
Usman Alkali Baba- IGP

By Gideon Njoku

The Inspector General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, has declared that peace has returned to Imo State.

The IGP’s declaration brought smiles and made not a few Imolites heave a heavy sigh of relief.

In the past recent weeks, Imo State which was, unarguably, the most peaceful and safest State in Nigeria descended into anarchy, climbed the ladder quickly, and became one of the unsafest States in Nigeria.

The State was immersed in killings by those quickly dubbed unknown men. They killed and maimed and destroyed. They set Government facilities, including Correctional Centres, Police facilities, including the Headquarters of the State Police Command on fire. They released hundreds of Prisoners and other detainees, most of them  condemned murderers and hardened criminals. And they looted Police facilities and killed Policemen in their numbers. And so were Military men killed. Civilians were not spared.

They, also set fire on  INEC facilities. They were brazen, and paraded the streets of Owerri in broad daylight.

One of their most spectacular outings was the invasion of the country home of the Governor of the State, Hope Uzodimma. They torched a part of the buildings in his premises and destroyed cars. As if those were not enough, a Security guard was killed.

One of the most high profile killings was that of a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Ahmed Gulak, a Lawyer.

Gulak, a native of Adamawa, former Speaker of the Adamawa House of Assembly, and former Political Adviser to former President Goodluck Jonathan, was in the State on an official visit with members of the Senate Committee on the  review of the 1999 Constitution.

On his way to the Imo Airport to board a flight back to Abuja, he was shot dead – a couple of Kilometres to the Airport.

People were afraid to visit Imo. Owerri, the hub of the hospitality industry and entertainment, died an untimely death. Nobody dared stay out after 6.00pm.

Even then, a couple of people were dragged out of their homes, and killed. Nobody could say exactly those behind the atrocities.

While some people blamed it on the Eastern Security Network, ESN, the militant wing of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, others blamed it on disgruntled politicians who had sworn to make Imo ungovernable.

Hope Uzodimma
Governor Hope Uzodimma

But no longer.

After the rain comes shine. The storm seems over. All has quietened down, gradually. And life has returned to the State.

What happened?

IGP Baba gives the credit to Governor Uzodimma. He said the Governor’s steadfastness, and courage and support, gave the Police and other Security agencies the confidence to go after the criminals and rout them.

He spoke Friday, July 2, 2021,  in Owerri, the Imo State capital when he paid a courtesy call on the Governor shortly after commissioning the Headquarters of Operation Search and Flush located on Owerri/Aba road.

According to a release by the Governor’s Media Adviser/ Chief Press Secretary, Oguwike Nwachuku, Baba said Imo State was in the news for the wrong reason recently. But noted that Governor Uzodimma’s support to the Police not only helped to restore the confidence of the officers and men, but went a long way in aiding the quick  return of peace to the state.

He thanked the Governor for keying into his Operation Restore Peace by recognising that policing is not all about manpower alone but about tools, equipment and strategic planning.

The IGP praised the Governor for procuring critical tools for Operation Search and Flush such as Armoured Personnel Carriers (APC), pick up vans and also equipping the office with State of the art communication gadgets that will help the arms bearing security agencies involved in the exercise to discharge their duties confidently.

“With the conducive atmosphere like the one I just commissioned as office space, the tools available to the operatives and the cooperation of all security agencies, I am not surprised that the narrative has changed in Imo State,” Baba explained and lauded Governor Uzodimma for making the jobs of his personnel easy.

The IGP who also joined Governor Uzodimma to hand over Cheques to the next of kin of 21 officers and men of the Imo State Police Command who lost their lives while fighting the bandits recently said the N5million given to each of the deceased family will go a long way in assisting the families they left behind.

Welcoming Baba to Imo State, Governor Uzodimma thanked the police chief for supporting the State Government in its efforts to bring peace back to the state.

The Governor specifically thanked Baba for eliminating the initial rivalry between security agencies, saying that his regime has witnessed a collaboration between the security agencies that is yielding positive result.

Governor Uzodimma however assured the Police Chief of the preparedness of his government to continue to support all the security agencies in Imo State so that they can play the role of keeping the peace already achieved in addition to securing the people and maintaining law and order.

He also announced that the Government will give all the police divisions in the State some amount to enable the leadership rise to the ocassion of deepening the peace that had been achieved in Imo State.

The IGP was accompanied on the visit by a Deputy Inspector General of Police, an Assistant Inspector General of Police, Police commissioners and other principal officers in his office.

Nnamdi Kanu’s Lawyer, Ejimakor, Tells Britain Kanu Was, Illegally, Forced Back To Nigeria; Asks For Help

0

By Gideon Njoku

Stopping short of screaming abduction, Nnamdi Kanu’s Lawyer, Alloy Ejimakor of ADULBERT   LEGAL SERVICES, has told the British Government that his client, its citizen was forced back to  Nigeria, illegally, by the Nigerian Government.

Kanu has a dual citizenship of both Nigeria and Britain. But at the time of his arrest, he was carrying only his British passport, and traveled on it.

In a letter to the British High Commissioner in Nigeria, Ms Catriona Laing CB, Ejimakor asked that “Mr  Kanu be granted every Consular assistance to which he is entitled as  British citizen.”

He also asked that Kanu, who he referred to as Okwu-Kanu, apparently the name with which he is known in Britain, and with which he acquired his British passport, be categorized as a political prisoner, and be  given diplomatic protection.

Ejimakor’s request: “That Kanu be categorized as a high profile political prisoner  or a prisoner of conscience, and be thus rendered the highest diplomatic protection under municipal and international laws”

He also asked that Kanu be granted access to his doctors and lawyers, and allowed to go to any hospital  of his choice,”

Emphasizing what he described as the illegality of Kanu’s arrest, Ejimakor noted that his client, “Mr Kanu is a British citizen who was traveling on a valid British passport when he was seized in a third country, and forcibly brought to Nigeria. Such act constitutes an unlawful rendition of a bona-fide citizen.”

In sum, Ejimakor notes that Kanu is not a criminal, and wants the “British authorities to file a Diplomatic Note or other legal process with Nigeria’s Federal High Court and the office of the  Attorney General  of Nigeria indicating her sovereign interest in Mr Kanu’s matter.”

Following is the full text of Ejimakor’s letter to the British High Commissioner in Nigeria.

Abuja

Dear Madam High Commissioner

RE: Urgent Request For Consular Assistance To OKWU-KANU, Nwannekaenyi Nnamdi Kenny (A British Citizen)

We are Solicitors to above-named British citizen, on whose behalf and Instruction we write this Letter to request an urgent Consular assistance to him.

Nnamdi Kanu
Nnamdi Kanu

Mr. Okwu-Kanu (aka Nnamdi Kanu) is the Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Director of Radio Biafra, both of which are corporate citizens of the United Kingdom.

Mr. Kanu resides in the United Kingdom, from which soil he departed on an overseas travel on or about June 19, 2021 on a British Passport No: 556543086 (copy of biographic page attached herewith).

We are reliably informed that while he was on said overseas travel, he was intercepted in Kenya by Nigeria’s foreign security agents and brought to Nigeria against his will on or about June 27, 2021 and ‘arraigned’ before the Federal High Court in Abuja without benefit of Counsel on June 29, 2031. Currently, he is being detained in the custody of the Directorate of State Security Services (DSS) in Abuja.

Your Excellency, permit us to point to a few legal, political and diplomatic issues that have been implicated in this matter. They are:

  1. Mr Kanu is a British citizen who was traveling on a valid British passport when he was seized in a third country and forcibly brought to Nigeria. Such act constitutes an unlawful rendition of a bonafide British citizen.
  2. He was not traveling on Nigerian passport or the passport of any other country, including that of Kenya.
  3. There is no extant Order of extradition by any British Court or any other foreign Court (including Kenya) and we are informed that there is no pending extradition proceedings standing against him in Britain or Kenya.
  4. There is no deportation Order by any Kenyan Court or other authority that made him subject to deportation. But if there was, the country of his deportation should have been Britain on which passport he was travelling. Deporting him to Nigeria just because he was borne in Nigeria, but not traveling on her passport, is unlawful under international law.
  5. The enterprise upon which Mr Kanu is engaged, which is: seeking the restoration of the defunct State of Biafra through a referendum is a protected political opinion (i.e self determination) under British and Nigerian Laws, where it is enacted at CAP A9, Article 20, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
  6. In our view, the manner of his interception and forcible deportation to Nigeria is extra-legal and does not comport with the pertinent international laws and treaties to which Nigeria is subject.

On the basis of the foregoing, we hereby make the following Prayers:

  1. That Mr Kanu be granted every possible Consular assistance to which he is entitled as a British citizen.
  2. That Mr Kanu be categorized as a high profile political prisoner or a prisoner of conscience and be thus rendered the highest diplomatic protection under municipal and international laws.
  3. That the Nigerian authorities be prevailed upon to immediately allow access to Mr Kanu by his Lawyers, Doctors and Family members.
  4. That the Nigerian authorities be prevailed upon to immediately avail Mr Kanu the opportunity of being taken to any hospital of his choice for medical examination.
  5. That the British authorities file a Diplomatic Note or other legal process with Nigeria’s Federal High Court and the Office of the Attorney General of Nigeria indicating her sovereign interest in Mr Kanu’s matter.
  6. That the British authorities declare that Mr Kanu is not a criminal but a person who possesses a political opinion the Nigerian authorities are seeking to suppress by means of punishment of some sort.
  7. That the British authorities urgently demand the unconditional release of Mr Kanu from detention.

While we await your urgent and most favorable considerations of our Prayers, please be assured of our highest esteem for Your Excellency, the High Commission and the British Government.

Sincerely:

ADULBERT LEGAL SERVICES

Aloy Ejimakor, Esquire

Recall that Kanu was re-arrested on Saturday night in Kenya and brought back to Nigeria on Sunday.

On Monday, he was hauled before a Federal High Court, Abuja, where he was being tried for alleged treason.

He was admitted to bail, but escaped from Nigeria when Federal troops invaded the Palace of his father, a king. Kanu alleged they were on a mission to kill him. During the invasion, Kanu said  a number of people, and their family dog were killed. His parents, too, escaped, but sadly died in exile. Their  bodies were brought back to Nigeria, and buried same day. Kanu was not able to attend their funeral for fear of a possible arrest.

After his escape, he made himself unavailable until he surfaced in an Isreali Synagogue.

His trial will continue on July 26.

Finally, Computer Village To Be Relocated To Kantagowa

0
Computer Village Ikeja

By Akinwale Kasali

The relocation of the Popular Computer Village from Ikeja to Kantogowa is gradually becoming a reality.

For over a decade, there have been brickbats over the relocation of the popular Ikeja Computer Village, hub of phones, Computers and technological devices in Nigeria to Kantogowa Market at Oke Odo Local Council Development Area of Lagos State.

Successive administrations at the helm of affairs of the Lagos State Government had paid lip service to the relocation debate of the Computer Village which was mapped out and structured as a residential area before it became a commercial hub.

From the Administration of former Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to Babatunde Fashola Administration amd Akinwunmi Ambode Administration, it has always been the same old story.

But there seems to be a twist in the old norm, as the relocation of the market is becoming a dream come true.

The Coalition of Association in Computer Village (CACOVI) has launched the relocation campaign of the Computer Village to the N40 billion Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Business Park at Katangowa, Lagos.

The ceremony which began this week was in conjunction with Sterling Alternative Finance, Bridgeways, and the Lagos State Government.

The CACOVI President, Timi Famoroti, said the inauguration was to create awareness of the reality of the relocation of Computer Village to the new ICT Business Park.

Famoroti revealed that CACOVI members had unanimously agreed to move to a more conducive environment free of any intimidation, harassment, and aggression.

According to him, “We deserve an international market such as the ICT park which will give members the opportunity to own their shops.

“To the members, it is an investment and an opportunity to fly.

“This project happening now is not without challenges but as leaders, we are determined to give our members a very conducive environment for business.”

Corroborating Famoroti,  President of the Phone and Allied Products Dealers Association, PAPDA, Ifeanyi Akubue, said the members were ready to relocate but the financial muscle was the challenge.

Akubue added that the association’s leadership had decided that a bank be brought in for members to be able to have access to funds to finance their relocation.

He further noted that there was a need for members to work with the leaders of Computer Village so as to have access to funding from the bank which would run for seven years.

According to him, the association has taken into consideration all the needs before agreeing to the relocation especially with the State Government’s support.

Also,  President of the Association of Mobile Communications Device Technicians, AMCODET), Kehinde Apara, said the technician was the live stream of the ICT Business Park and as such eager to be a part.

Apara said that the event was an assurance of the reality of the project after so many years of speculation.

Also speaking, the Chief Executive Officer, Bridgeways Global Project Limited, Mr. Jimmy Onyemenam, said the relocation of Computer Village had been on for several years.

Onyemenam added that the event was to create more awareness of the reality of the relocation of Computer Village.

He further stated that there was a need for the launch because since the construction started, the associations at Computer Village were not officially informed that works had started on the site.

Kantogowa Market is a 15- hectare expanse of land located at the Agbado Oke-Odo CDA in Alimosho has been earmarked by the Lagos State Government for the relocation of Computer Village market.

Gambia’s National Assembly Passes Access To Information Bill Into Law; Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, Media Rights Agenda Applaud

0
Goodluck Jonathan

The Goodluck Jonathan Foundation (GJF) and Media Rights Agenda (MRA) have commended The Gambia’s National Assembly for passing the country’s Access to Information Bill 2021 into Law Wednesday, July 1, 2021 and called on President Adama Barrow to speedily sign the Bill into Law to consolidate the restoration of participatory democracy in the country which began with his ascension to power in 2017, following the historic elections of December 2016.

In a joint statement by Ms. Ann Iyonu, Executive Director of the GJF, and Mr. Edetaen Ojo, MRA’s Executive Director, the two organizations noted that “the signing of the Bill into Law by President Barrow will enable the Government of The Gambia to achieve a significant milestone in advancing the right of access to information for Gambians as a fundamental human right guaranteed under several international human rights instruments to which The Gambia is a party, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, which is the foundational human rights instrument on the African continent.”

According to them, 23 African countries presently have specific national access to information laws, with most of such laws coming from countries in West Africa while The Gambia is the only country in Anglophone West Africa that has not yet enacted or adopted a national access to information legislation.

Ms. Iyonu and Mr. Ojo noted that both the GJF and MRA have followed the progress of The Gambia’s Bill at different stages with keen interest, since its formal presentation to the National Assembly for consideration, adding that they have provided guidance and advice from time to time to their respective partners in civil society, in the media and in Government in The Gambia in an effort to enrich the content of the Bill, strengthen it and speed up the process of its consideration and passage.

In particular, they commended the Gambian Press Union (GPU) for its highly effective advocacy in support of the Bill, and the Attorney-General of the Gambia, Honourable. Dawda A. Jallow, for presenting the Bill to the National Assembly in 2019 and for moving the historic motion for the Third Reading and passage of the Bill on July 1.

Ms. Iyonu and Mr. Ojo said having regard to the fact that the Bill was presented to the National Assembly for consideration in December 2019, they are immensely pleased that in a period of less than two years since then, the Bill has already been passed and that there is a very real prospect that it will be signed into Law in the near future.

Both organizations pledged their readiness to support and assist the Government and people of The Gambia in ensuring the effective implementation of the new access to information framework after it becomes Law.

Lagos Set To Establish Two More Universities

0

By Akinwale Kasali

The Lagos State House of Assembly headed by Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa is making  a move to give teeth to the establishment of two new Universities in the State. They are a University of Education and a University of Science and Technology.

The Assembly, on Thursday, debated two bills proposing the establishment of the two two tertiary institutions. The bill has scaled

its second reading.

The Lawmakers stated their commitment and determination for the State to have the two said Universities to further accommodate prospective students who intend to schooled in the discipline and be more grounded.

Obasa said he has asked the House Committee on Education (Tertiary) to report back in two weeks, for the House to work assiduously for the dream to become reality.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker of the House, Eromosele Ebhomele, said the lawmakers argued that the bill for a law to provide for the establishment of the University of Education, Lagos, UNEDLAG, was important as it was suggested that it should also have provision for pre-degree programmes.

Hon. Bisi Yusuff, representing Alimosho Constituency suggested a provision in the bill that would make graduates be somewhat independent rather than search for jobs.

“The inclusion of vocational training will also make the students  be self-employed,” he said.

On his part, Hon. Sani Okanlawon said it had become important for the Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education and the Michael Otedola College of Education to be upgraded to a university.

“The society now rejects NCE and what is the benefit of going to a school that your certificate will not be recognised?

“Admission into this school is the lowest as only 18 applicants chose (ACCOED) as first choice in the last Universal Tertiary Matriculations Examinations (UTME).

“With the creation of this varsity, it will reduce the number of applicants seeking admission to LASU,” he said.

Also contributing, Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu, representing Eti-Osa 2 Constituency agreed with his colleagues on the need to upgrade the two colleges of education in the state to a university, said the NCE is no longer popular.

According to him, the establishment of the university is timely, but “there is need to have a template to form the institution in order to avoid overlap.”

Chairman, House Committee on Information, Hon. David Setonji, supported the bill and added that the state had a high number of primary and secondary schools with fewer teachers and that the university would help resolve the challenge.

The Leader of the House, Hon. Sanai Agunbiade (Ikorodu 1), who said he was excited about the planned upgrade, told his colleagues that he is a product of ACCOED and that he taught for five years with the certificate he got from the institution.

“The creation of a new varsity is a good thing. This bill takes care of the welfare of both lecturers and students,” he added.

The lawmakers are optimistic that the proposed University of Education would produce good teachers if passed into law.

“Concerning the proposed University of Science and Technology, the lawmakers expressed optimism that it would help provide manpower for the development of the state and the country”, Abiodun Tobun, representing Epe 2 Constituency said.

It was however suggested that courses in the humanities and legal studies should not be included in the institution’s curriculum as a University of Science and Technology, stressing that science and technology play vital roles in development, as  studies to be offered should take into cognisance the culture of the people.

Yusuff also advised that the university should be made to go into researches on agriculture to reduce the high cost of food in the state and the country.

Imo: Widow Okechi & A First Lady’s Intervention

0
Ifeyinwa Okechi

By Charles Igbo

The story of this widow is one of those stories that break the heart.

Her name is Mrs  Ifeyinwa Okechi. A native of Ihitte-Ukwa Orsu, Imo State, she is a mother of five children – four boys and a girl.

Nobody would have known about her but for the inexplicable cruelty of her brother-in-law towards her.

It is not known how old she is, but her photograph which accompanied the viral video which told her story showed she is quite young – perhaps, in her late 30’s or early 40’s.

No matter.

Like most women, her world came to an end, literally, the day her husband died. Given how difficult the country is, it is bad enough to be widowed at a young age, with five children, but it is hell when such a widow is saddled with a brother-in-law from hell.

That was the fate of Mrs Okechi.

According to her, her brother-in-law, as soon as her husband died, felt she had no other business with, and in the family. He asked her to leave, even when she had five children for her husband. Nobody told her why she was no longer a member of the family just because she had become a widow.

Was she responsible for her husband’s death? In Igboland, such allegations are common. Once a man dies, his wife becomes a suspect. She becomes an outcast, so to say. The allegation that such a wife must have had a hand in her husband’s death, worsens the agony, and pain, and loss. It is like a stigma.

Mrs Okechi’s fate was worse than that. Her brother-in-law sent her packing from the house she shared with her husband and children. And closed down her shop. When she went back to the village with her children, she suffered a worse faith.

One morning, her brother-in-law struck like thunder, lightning and a bad storm. He pulled down, to its very foundation, the house which she and her children called home. Gone with the house was everything she called property – including clothings, foam, beddings, cooking utensils.

When she came back, her house was like where a hurricane  swept through. Everything was inside out and upside down.

Devastated, and in shock, she stood in front of what was her home and wept. She stood there lamenting and bemoaning her fate. And she had a lot to lament about.

Where was she going to sleep with her children? Where was the next meal going to come from? In which and/or whose kitchen was she even going to cook the next meal?

Her lamentations touched a good Nigerian who decided to video her. She told her story. A story of pain. A story of agony. A story of homelessness. She asked for help. Help for Where she and her children could put their heads down at night and sleep. And the video went viral.

Nigerians, and especially, Imolites, who saw and listened to her story, were outraged.

One of those outraged and concerned  was the wife of the Governor of Imo State, Mrs Chioma Uzodimma, a Lawyer. As soon she heard the story and watched the video, she took immediate action.

The video went viral on June, 27, 2021. And, by June 30, 2021, the Imo First Lady had taken charge, and care of the situation. She provided a furnished accommodation, and cash. Other things, would follow, including finding a permanent solution  to her problem with her cruel brother-in-law.

In a release by Mrs Uzodimma’s office, she sued for peace and calm. And promised justice.

The release reads:

“Her Excellency, Barr. Mrs. Chioma Uzodimma, through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Vulnerable Groups, promptly intervened in the case of a widow, Mrs. Ifeyinwa Okechi, who hails from Ihitte Ukwa, Orsu LGA., whose house was destroyed by her brother-in-law, and was rendered homeless.

“The widow, Mrs. Ifeyinwa Okechi, who has five children (Four girls and a boy), was immediately provided with a conducive accommodation fully paid for by Her Excellency Barr. Mrs. Chioma Uzodimma.

“Okechi was also given financial palliative to enable her cater for herself and children during the period of her stay.

“A complaint has been properly filed on the matter which will be thoroughly investigated to find a lasting solution.

“This gesture is to further reiterate the commitment and determination of her Excellency Barr. Mrs. Chioma Uzodimma, in ensuring the welfare of women, children, and vulnerable groups in the state.

“Imo First Lady appreciates everyone who has, in one way or another, reached out to Mrs. Okechi and her children.

“She prayed that God will reward and replenish them abundantly.

“It is pertinent to note that the ummunna and community leadership has weighed into the matter and has mandated the brother-in-law of Mrs. Ifeyinwa Okechi to finish an uncompleted building which previously was being constructed by the widow’s late husband.

“The Woman Affairs/Widowhood department in the Ministry of Women affairs and vulnerable groups will follow  this matter to its logical conclusion.

Mrs. Ifeyinwa Okechi was all smiles as she profusely thanked Imo First Lady for her gift of love while she made plans to immidiately move into her apartment with her children.

“Commissioner for Women affairs, Lady Nkechinyere Ugwu, was accompanied by Hon. Uchenna Osigwe, TC Chairman of Orsu LGA, Mrs Ijeoma Onyebuagu, President NCWS Orsu  LGA, Mrs Chinwe Nwokeji and several staff of the Ministry of Women Affairs and Vulnerable Groups.”

Imo has been lucky with its First Ladies on this score.

Lady Ebere Ihedioha, during her tenure as Imo First Lady, was on top of such situations. She provided accommodation, and picked the bills of such vulnerable people. And so did Mrs Nkechi Okorocha who built a number of houses for widows.

In the instant case, not a few people are asking Mrs Uzodimma to do more. They want her to follow the case of Mrs Okechi bumper to bumper. They want her to see to the prosecution of her  brother-in-law. They want him to face the law. And, in addition, they want him not only to tender a public apology to the widow so humiliated, but to write an undertaking to leave her absolutely alone, and to be held responsible if anything untoward happens to her,  or any of her children.

That, they say, would act as a deterrent to such cruel in- laws.

A few days after Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, a dual citizen of Britain and Nigeria was arrested in Kenya, Britain and Nigeria held talks, where they discussed everything but Kanu’s arrest.

Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, an organization proscribed by the Nigerian Government, was arrested in Kenya and repatriated to Nigeria, while he was traveling with his British Passport as a British citizen.

On repatriation to Nigeria on Sunday, Kanu was hauled before a Federal High Court, Abuja, on Monday, presided over by the Hon. Justice Binta Nyako to continue with his trial over alleged treason related activities.

Nyako had granted Kanu bail in 2017 during his trial which began in 2016. But Kanu was forced to jump bail when men of the Nigerian Military invaded his  father’s palace where he was. Fatalities were, allegedly, recorded.

Since then, he had been out of Nigeria, and stayed back in London from where he has been pursuing, vigorously, his passion of a Republic of Biafra, out of Nigeria. His absence from Nigeria, and the Court ended on Sunday.

Both the British and Kenyan Government say they are ignorant of the process that led to his arrest and repatriation.

But at a time when Kanu and his legal team are pointing out the illegality of the action of the Nigerian Government while Kanu was carrying his British passport, and asking for intervention from the British Government, Nigeria and Britain met without a word on the Kanu incident.

In strengthening the Unity and bilateral trade that havr existed and bound both countries together the Federal Government and the British Government dialogued  on charting a way forward.

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, who represented the Nigeria had a meeting with the High Commissioner of Britain in Nigeria, Ms. Catriona Laing, discussing bilateral issues relating to Asset Recovery, Anti-corruption crusade, amendment of the Electoral Act, the Audit Bill, Petroleum Industry Bill, Twitter ban and counter terrorism approaches.

In a statement by the Special Assistant to the Minister of Justice, Umar Gwandu, he said the fundamental interest and objective of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration was to leverage on the bills to enhance value in terms of creating amiable environment for investment, protecting the public interest for the maximum benefit of the country.

On Petroleum Industry Bill, the Minister said necessary steps have been taken to ensure the pending bills are transmitted to the President for accent.

The essence of the amendment of the Electoral Act he said was to enhance the democratic system thereby aiming at addressing delays in judicial determination of pre-election matters, as well as ensuring justice and fairness in the conduct of election processes including party primaries.

“To strengthen the fight against corruption the government came up with the Proceeds of Crime Bill and Audit Bill among others’’.

He noted that public interest has been the uppermost consideration within which the context of freedom of expressions should be regulated and reasonable restrictions to freedom of expressions are locally and internationally recognized.

“Our government is not averse to freedom, freedom is not borderless. Freedom of expression must not be used in such a manner that incites citizens to violence or calls for an overthrow of a democratically elected government. There are bounds to freedom within the laws,” he said.

On the Twitter ban in the country, Malami said the Government has established a committee on the matter and that the company has approached the Government over the issue.

He maintained that the interest of Nigerians matters most for any company that wants do business in the country.

“If you want to operate as a business entity in Nigeria, you must do so within the context of Nigerian laws, nothing offensive or that breach the Nigerian laws should be entertained”.

In her submission, the British High Commissioner, thanked the Minister for the clarification of the issues, maintaining that the steps taken in the fight against corruption and electoral reforms are really encouraging, pledging the determination of the United Kingdom to always work with the nation in actualising its goals and objectives.

Opinion: Kanu Is Not The Problem of Northerners

By Prof. Abdussamad Umar Jibia

On Thursday June 24, 2021 I stumbled on a viral video from Zamfara state. In the four minutes clip, a notorious bandits’ kingpin could be seen boastfully confessing in front of senior security officials of the atrocities he committed against the Nigerian state and its people. The man, popularly known as Dan-Karami is said to be one of the senior gang members of the deceased Buharin daji, a bandits’ general who controlled the rural areas of Zamfara until his death in 2018 in the hand of one of his other gang members, Dogo Gide. Dogo Gide had ‘repented’ and submitted himself to the Government of Zamfara state under Abdulazeez Yari and Yari decided to use him to kill his boss. Gide had since resumed crime and is operating from his base in the vast forest reserve spanning several North Western and central states. He and Dan-Karami were among the many gangsters that sealed and breached several peace agreements with Governments of Zamfara and Katsina states.

I watched the video clips several times and upon enquiry I came to know that the senior Government officials were there to beg him to allow people to go to farm in the areas he controlled now that it is rainy season. The areas he controlled, as he stated in the clip are south of the Jibia-Gusau highway where he claims to be responsible for “any crime you hear of”. It is noteworthy that a week earlier 53 people were killed in the area. That is many times the number of Nigerians killed due to IPOB activities since it started.

Going by what he stated, the Nigerian Government has no other option except to go and beg him since, according to him, he has victoriously repelled all attempts by the Nigerian Army to defeat him. In one of those attempts, he stated, he was attacked by a combined team of Nigerian and Nigerien security forces and he defeated and killed more than half of them. He also confessed of kidnapping forty children from Zurmi township at another point in time.

Another thing he stated worth examining was the initial rejection by the now deposed Emir of Zurmi to dialogue with him or any other terrorist for that matter. If what he said was true, the Emir only agreed to speak to him after it was clear to the Emir that Government could not defeat him. The question to ask here is, if the Emir decided to be communicating to the outcast in order to protect his people, was he doing or not doing the right thing? Why was he deposed by the same Government that now decided to go and smile with a confirmed criminal who has admitted killing several people including our soldiers? When has the Nigerian Government become a coward that aims only at soft targets?

After watching that video, I began to wait for a statement from Federal Government. None came, at least not to my knowledge. The expectations of any citizen who watched that video would be the Government would now launch a major manhunt for the criminal to face charges of murder, treason, kidnapping, etc. Alas! The attention of the leaders of APC and PDP is not there. Their concern is not how Nigerians can sleep with their eyes closed or how many criminals are brought to justice but how many politicians from one party defect to another. Unfortunately for the people of Zamfara state the next thing they heard is that their Governor was now defecting to ruling (sorry “governing”) party as if that is what would solve their problem.

But there is one thing I did. After watching that video I decided to send it to the media aide of the Attorney General and Minister of Justice and requested him to give it to his boss in case he had not seen it along with our message of disappointment.

My choice of Abubakar Malami is deliberate for two reasons. One. He is not one of those opportunists who only began to support Buhari with the windstorm of 2015. He has been the supporter of Buhari from day one and is thus a witness to all the promises his Oga made to Nigerians. Two. He is the Attorney General and Minister of Justice.

Nothing has changed. The Sheikh Gumis are busy going from one bandits’ camp to another and calling on Buhari to give salaries to Fulani criminals. The Kabiru Gombes are all over the place telling masses that Saint Buhari is not responsible for the protection of their lives and property since he has appointed Northerners to take charge of security. The Masaris are there blaming the masses for waiting for Government to give them protection. That is the very sad predicament Northerners have found themselves. You are on your own if fate makes you an ordinary Northern Nigerian.

Yesterday, while the rest of us were still waiting for action (although sincerely speaking most Northerners have lost hope), Malami appeared on our television screens to tell Nigerians that Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of IPOB was arrested “through the collaborative efforts of Nigerian intelligence and security services”. That is a good news, I thought, but it is no news. Kanu has never been the major problem of the rural farmers of the North. His arrest will never make Kaduna-Abuja, Kaduna-Birnin Gwari, Jibia-Gusau, Kankara-Sheme or any of those highways safe. It will never stop the harassment of our people killed, kidnapped and raped by bandits on daily basis. So what if he is arrested?

But Kanu is being “accused of instigating violence especially in the Southeastern Nigeria that resulted in the loss of lives and property of civilians, military, paramilitary, police forces and destruction of civil institutions and symbols of authorities.” Here is someone right here on the Nigerian soil boasting of having committed all these atrocities and daring Government. Yet, the Government is going there to smile at him. Is that not an irony?
