Ekiti APC Crisis: Buhari’s Aide, Ojudu, Blames Governor Fayemi

0

By Ayodele Oni

Special Adviser to President Mohamadu Buhari on Political Matters, Senator Babafemi Ojudu, has said problems and crisis within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti state are caused by supporters of Governor Kayode Fayemi.

Mr Ojudu accompanied the Minister for interior, Rauf Aregbesola, to the State early this week during which they paid courtesy call on Governor Fayemi.

The Presidential Aide, in a statement in Ado Ekiti on Wednesday, advised that

“Sometime, in the nearest future, I hope we meet to discuss Ekiti, our party and the governorship election coming up next year.

“Whatever may be our differences, we must come together to ensure that the baton is never again passed to a PDP person in Ekiti.

“Ekiti yearns for development. Poverty and ignorance in my home state are alarming. Enough of that. Unity of purpose will help us fast track the process of getting out of the morass we find ourselves.

“To achieve that, therefore, we need fairness, we need equity. Enough of clannish groupings such as Tokan Tokan- the self serving ones who say they are closest to the heart of the Governor even though we know what they say behind him.

“Let us open up the space for every member of our party. Let everyone who has ambition canvass their position and let us provide the free atmosphere for people to make their choice.

“Let us allow for equal opportunity. Let us embrace hope- let us preach unity, faith, peace and progress.”

Ojudu, who was a Senator representing Ekiti central at the red chamber between 2011 and 2015, said the only way forward that could make APC a party to beat in Ekiti is to unite the warring groups within the party saying the interest of the party should be made priority.

The Presidential Aide, has since the Governorship primary of 2019, which he participated and lost, fell out with Governor Fayemi who he accused of buying up the delegates.

He joined forces with others to take the APC in the State to court over the election of its former Executives, which they said were just handpicked by the Governor.

The crisis peaked when the group announced the suspension of Dr Fayemi from the party to counter the earlier suspension clamped on members of the group by the state leadership.

With his claim that he was on a working visit to the state, political observers believe that Ojudu is trying to rejig his political machinery, ahead of next year’s Governorship election.

BREAKING: Messi Agrees Five Year Contract Extension With Barcelona, Receives Pay Cut

Lionel Messi

By Akinwale Kasali

Newly crowned Copa America winning Captain of Argentina, Lionel Messi, has agreed to extend his contract with Catalan giants, Barcelona Football Club of Spain.

For months now, the future of the Six-time World Footballer of the Year has been in a subject of speculation, following his intention to quit the Spanish club side and move to elsewhere.

Last season, Messi tried forcing a move out of Barcelona to reunite with former Coach, Pep Guardiola, but the move was stopped through the intervention of World Soccer Governing Body, FIFA.

There is, however, good news for the Spanish side following the agreement reached by the club with the prolific and mercurial player,  to a pay cut. He intends to extend his contract by five years.

According to ESPN,  Messi accepted a significant wage reduction to prolong his stay.

Messi was a free agent after his contract at Barca expired, and he had courted interest from Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City since first revealing a desire to end his 20-year relationship with Barca last summer.

The 34-year-old’s previous contract, which was worth over €500 million ($594m) over four years, expired at the stroke of midnight on June 30.

The five-year extension of Messi at Barcelona is said to be influenced by the return of Joan Laporta as Barcelona President in March. Messi grew more open to staying at Camp Nou. An official announcement is expected in the coming days.

Laporta had hoped to finalise an agreement before Messi’s previous terms expired. Barca’s financial problems made that impossible, though, with their gross debt over €1 billion. Cutbacks have been essential, in terms of transferring players out, reducing the wage bill and getting Messi to accept a lower salary.

La Liga president Javier Tebas has warned Barca they will not be allowed to register Messi’s new deal if they are unable to reduce spending to comply with the league’s Financial Fair Play rules. Barca’s spending limit has been reduced from over €600m to €347m since the coronavirus pandemic, with further reductions expected to be imposed for the upcoming season.

Therefore, to register Messi’s new deal, in addition to new signings Sergio Aguero, Memphis Depay, Eric Garcia and Emerson Royal, Barca need to continue reducing the wage bill and moving players on. With that in mind, sources at the club refuse to rule out the departure of Antoine Griezmann, a €120m signing in 2019.

The opening 2021/2022 season of the Spanish League will kick off on August 15, with Barcelona taking on Real Sociedad in Camp Nou Stadium, home of Barcelona.

$11bn Fuel Subsidy Scam: I almost Died Says Okonjo-Iweala

By James Orji

Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Director General of the World Trade Organisation, WTO said she did not regret serving Nigeria despite the fact that her life and that of her family members were threatened while she served twice as a minister in previous administrations.

The WTO boss was a one-time Minister of Finance and Foreign Affairs during the administrations of former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan.

At a point during the Jonathan government, her mother was kidnapped by persons suspected to be working for oil marketers who were not happy with her management of the oil subsidy funds.

Her non-compromising stand was also believed to have attracted her to attacks from some business men who thought she was trying to deny them from getting their oil subsidy claim, which at a point during the Jonathan government peaked over $11 billion.

She was also targeted by sponsors of ghost workers in the payroll of the federal government, she said.

According to her, all her efforts were directed at cleaning up the government book and ensure accountability while in office, but this, obviously did not go down well with some individuals, she stated.

In spite of this, the no-nonsense administrator said she had no regret whatsoever, adding that she did the right thing for her country.

Narrating her experience Dr Okonjo-Iweala said “And just by having an integrated financial management system, we were able to cut down on the phenomenon of ghost workers, you know where people used to put additional people on the payroll in the ministries, ghost pensioners, because ghost workers will graduate to ghost pensioners, and so we got rid of that and saved $1.1 billion for the government

“So that is, we were fighting other types of corruption. We had an oil subsidy system in which we used to pay marketers.

“Oil marketers who brought in refined oil, you now, we paid them the difference between the market price, and the subsidised price that the government was mandated for selling oil to people.

“And so, that was when I came the second time. This was a big problem. When I left government the first time in 2006, these subsidies were about $2 billion, when I came back, the first thing we noticed was that it had grown to $11 billion.

“So, I asked President Jonathan that we could audit the oil accounts which he fully supported. When we audited, $8.5 billion of the accounts, we found $2.5 billion of fraudulent claims and with his backing, we refused to pay that to the marketers and that led to a series of problems, which I won’t bore you with, including threats to my life.

“My mother being kidnapped for five days was one of the worst periods of my life and it was a very tough period.”

In the midst of her travails at the time, the former minister said “I think the privilege of serving my country as finance minister for several years, to being able to work on some reforms is one of the best things I’ve ever done.”

The Australians opened a 38-point lead to end the quarter 84-46, then clocking the 100-point mark to win by 39 points ending the game 108-69.

GTCO Eyes Africa’s Top 5

By Fola James

The Group Chief Executive officer, Guarantee Trust Holding Company, GTCO Segun Agbaje has disclosed that the long-term goal of establishing the parent company, is to make it among top five financial institutions in Africa.

GTCO was recently listed on the Nigerian Exchange, NGX and many have been wondering about the prospect of the new company amid stiff competition among top financial institutions in the country a la Africa. But Agbaje said the resources of the holding company will be harnessed to ensure that GTCO leads others in terms of new investment and creating more opportunity in both the money and capital markets.

He spoke during the closing gong ceremony to commemorate the listing of GTCO Plc on the NGX in Lagos on Tuesday, noting that the company was not unaware of the cut throat competition in the sector.

He said the synergy between the capital market/ money market is key to ensure more injection of funds into the financial system

According to him “I think we all got spooked after the financial crisis and so we have stopped doing margin loans and leverages one to one. A good financial system must overcome challenges like that and find a way to do safe margin loans and hopefully, we learnt something from the past and find a way to go back to doing that as there is no way a stock market can grow if it is only driven by people’s money and so we must find a way to design leverage again and put it back.

“Anchoring the synergy between the capital market and money market stakeholders require many ways or strategies and one of the easiest way is that when you have an asset management tower, you start to create portfolios and your portfolios will have money market instruments or have equities in it and one of the reasons for doing this today is to create portfolios with both retail and Holdco so that people can go into anyone.

“I think the reason why we have missed the synergy is that a lot of asset management companies and a lot of investments are not being done on a portfolio basis and people are either investing in either money market or equities and the trick is to design portfolios that have the two (money market and capital market instruments) as regards to risk appetite that will determine the percentages you play with,” Agbaje said.

Meanwhile, the Chief Executive Officer, NGX, Temi Popoola has commended the board and management of GTCO Plc for its successful restructuring assuring that the NGX will continue to partner GTCO and other listed companies and issuers in the Exchange to grow the capital market.

Finally, Zuma Confirms South Africa As African Country

0

By Prince Machela (THE SOWETAN TIME)

In the midst of the political confusion that has gripped our country, many people are wondering if we have come to the end of South Africa.

The answer is simple: The thing called an “end” does not exist, not in relation to a country. SA will be there long after Jacob Zuma is gone.

What Zuma has done is to make us come to the realisation that ours is just another African country, not some exceptional country on the Southern tip of the African Continent.

During the Presidency of Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki, some among us used to believe that the black people of SA are better than those of other African countries.

We must all thank Zuma for revealing our true African character; that the idea of rule of law is not part of who we are, and that constitutionalism is a concept far ahead of us as a people.

How else are we to explain the thousands of people who flock to stadia to clap hands for a President who has violated their country’s constitution? Such people have no idea of constitutionalism.

Now that we have reclaimed our place as another African country, we must reflect on, and come to terms with, our real character, and imagine what our future portends.

In a typical African country, ordinary people don’t expect much of politicians, because people get tired of repeated empty promises.

In a typical African country, people have no illusions about the unity of morality and governance. People know that those who have power, have it for themselves and their friends and families.

The idea that the state is an instrument for people’s development is a Western concept, and has been copied by pockets of Asian countries.

Africans and their leaders don’t like to copy from the West. They are happy to remain African, and do things “the African way”.

The African way, is rule by kings, chiefs & indunas, in a setting of unwritten rules. Is there anyone who has seen a book of African customary laws?

The idea that a commoner can raise questions about public money spent on the residence of a king is not African. The ANC MPs who have been defending Zuma, are true Africans.

Asking a ruler to be accountable is a foreign – Western – idea. In a situation where there is conflict between a ruler and laws, Africans simply change the laws to protect the ruler. This is why no single white person has called for King Dalindyebo to be released from jail.

The problem with clever blacks is that they think they live in Europe, where ideas of democracy have been refined over centuries.

What we need to do is to come back to reality, and accept that ours is a typical African country. Such a return to reality will give us a fairly good idea of what SA’s future might look like …

This country will not look like Denmark. It might look like Nigeria, where anti-corruption crusaders are an oddity. Being an African country, ours will not look like Germany. SA might look like Kenya, where tribalism drives politics.

People must not entertain the illusion that a day is coming when SA will look like the USA. Our future is more on the side of Zimbabwe, where one ruler is more powerful than the rest of the population. Even if Julius Malema were to become president, it would still be the same.

African leaders don’t like the idea of an educated populace, for clever people are difficult to govern. Mandela and Mbeki were themselves corrupted by Western education. (Admission: this columnist is also corrupted by such education.)

Zuma remains African. His mentality is in line with Boko Haram. He is suspicious of educated people; what he calls “clever blacks”. Remember that Boko Haram means “Against Western Education”.

The people who think we have come to the end of SA, don’t realise that we have actually come to the beginning of a real African country, away from the Western illusions of exceptionalism. Those who are unsettled by this true African character need help. The best we can do for them is to ask them to look North of the Limpopo River, to learn more about governance in Africa.

What makes most people restless about the future of SA is that they have Western models in mind, forgetting that ours is an African country.

The idea that a President can resign simply because a court of law has delivered an adverse judgment is Western. Only the Prime Minister of Iceland does that; African rulers will never do that.

Analysed carefully, the notion of SA coming to an “end” is an expression of a Western value system – of accountability, political morality, reason, and so on.

All these are lofty ideas of Socrates, Kant, Hegel, and so on. They are not African.

All of us must thank Jacob Zuma for introducing us to the real African Republic of South Africa, not some outpost of European values.

Ekiti Goes Tough On Gender Violence, Proposes Stiffer Penalties In New Laws

By Ayodele Oni

Ekiti State Government has gone a step further in its efforts to ensure that rape victims get justice, while perpetrators face stiffer punishment under its proposed new laws.

A statement in Ado Ekiti on Tuesday from the state Ministry of Justice revealed that currently, 121 cases of rape are being prosecuted at various courts across Ekiti State.

The statement, signed by the attorney general and commissioner for Justice, Mr Olawale Fapohunda, indicated that the statistics only relate to victims or their relatives who are willing to support the Ministry in the prosecution of these cases.

According to him, there are several unwilling victims that are not prepared to volunteer information due to public stigma.

“It is for this reason that the Ekiti State Ministry of Justice is today announcing additional measures to curb sexual violence in the state, as follows:

“Hindering Prosecution has now been proposed to be an offence in the Ekiti State Criminal Law Bill, 2021, that is now before the Ekiti State House of Assembly.

“Under this heading, it will be a criminal offence for any person to seek to hinder or unlawfully

influence the office of the Attorney-General to discontinue certain criminal matters including Rape, Sexual Assault and Child Defilement.

“The punishment prescribed is five years imprisonment on conviction. Persons in the habit of writing letters of discontinuance in rape matters are specifically invited to take note.

“Legal Protection of Gender Based Violence Whistleblowers. The Ministry of Justice has proposed an amendment to Gender Based Violence Prohibition Law 2020 (as amended).

“The amendment seeks to protect persons who report cases of Rape, Sexual Assault, and Child Defilement. By the provisions of the proposed amendment, such persons will be included in the Whistleblowers’ Protection Programme of the Ekiti State Ministry of Justice.

“Confiscation of private accommodation, hotel accommodation, and related places used for the rape of a minor. The Ministry of Justice has previously issued several warnings to hotel owners and other places of leisure that they risk confiscation of their facilities if such places are used for the rape of minors.

“Similarly, private residences that are found to have been used for the rape of minors will also be subject to possible confiscation by the Government of Ekiti State.

“The Ministry of Justice is currently working on a legislative proposal that will allow Government to revoke the Certificate of Occupancy of such properties with a view to converting them to rehabilitation centers for ex-convicts.

“When implemented, it is hoped that these additional measures would reverse the trend of sexual violence in Ekiti State.”

The statement also confirmed an alleged rape case against a security personnel deployed to the state government house and attached to the convoy of the Wife of the Governor.

It stated the matter was reported to have taken place on Monday, July 5, 2021, in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.

“The case is now being handled by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), FCT Command Headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force.

“The State Government will cooperate fully with the police investigation team to ensure the matter is investigated thoroughly.

“The victim is receiving extensive psycho-social and legal support to cope with the trauma, and seek justice, and her identity being protected.

“The Ministry of Justice will continue to aggressively pursue the Dr. Kayode Fayemi administration’s Zero Tolerance policy for all forms of sexual violence.

“Government requires the support of our citizens to speak up and speak out on sexual violence in the State.”

Secondus Tackles Wike, Says He’s Not A Liar, As Okupe Slams Governor

Wike and Secondus

By Adesina Soyooye

The brewing spat between the Chairman of the Peoples  Democratic Party, PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, and the Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, boiled over a few days ago when Wike, publicly, called Secondus a liar. Wike, also, dismissed him as ineffective and incompetent.

The Governor spoke at the 60th birthday celebration of former Governor of Cross River State, Liyel Imoke.

Wike held the Chairman responsible for the run on the party.

Incidentally, both men are from the same State, Rivers, and Wike was, to a large extent,  responsible for the emergence of Secondus as the National Chairman of the PDP.

The public criticism of the Chairman by Wike shocked not a few people.

Reacting to it, a chieftain of the party, Dr Doyin Okupe, slammed the Governor. saying his public criticism of Secondus was irresponsible and immature, and unacceptable. Okupe was of the view that it was capable of bringing the party as well as Secondus to public ridicule. If Wike felt that Secondus had not done well, Okupe submitted, he  should  have criticised him at a National Working Committee meeting, not publicly.

On Tuesday, the Chairman reacted through his media office, taking an exception to being called a liar.

In a statement signed by his Media Adviser, Ike Abonyi, Secondus said the Wike provocation notwithstanding,  he would never take on issues with any PDP leader.

Following is the full text of Secondus’ response.

“The media office of the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Prince Uche Secondus has been inundated with calls and inquiries on the outburst of the Rivers State Governor, Bar. Neysom Wike, against the person and image of the National Chairman.

“Our response is that no amount of provocation will make the National Chairman join issues with any leader of the party talk less a state Governor. To do that is to remove the toga of a leader of the party.

“The impact of such response from National Chairman on the party will be worse than silence.

“The National Chairman considers whatever negative outburst against him from any quarter as one of the punches a leader must receive and endure to get stronger especially when truth is unhidden that Secondus is not a liar.”

Benin Group Slams Gov Obaseki, Accuses Him Of Withholding Traditional Rulers Monthly Allocation

Godwin Obaseki

By Ayodele Oni

As the undercurrent altercation between Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo state and Benin Monarch, Omo N’oba  Ewuare over the  planned return of stolen artefacts is being laid to rest, a socio- cultural group, has raised an alarm over an alleged deliberate stoppage of monthly allocation to royal fathers in the state.

The Group, Benin Solidarity Movement (BSM) worldwide, claimed that the State Government has stopped monthly payment of entitlements to traditional rulers in the state, citing ongoing auditing of accounts of Local Government.

BSM in a statement on Tuesday, signed by its President, Elder Curtis Igbo, stated that: “The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki, stopped the payment of Traditional Rulers’ monthly stipends, an action which has vigorously affected the payment of the salaries of workers in the employment of the Traditional Rulers.

“Godwin Obaseki’s directive to the Local Government Councils, stopping them from paying the Traditional Rulers stipends is seen by the Benin Solidarity Movement (BSM) as a way of confronting the Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare11, a fallout of the ongoing issue of Benin Artefacts ownership and control.

“This is a Federal Government monetary allocations coming directly to the various Traditional Council cum Institutions from the federation account and Godwin Obaseki do not have Legal or Constitutional right to stop the payments with a flimsy excuse of auditing their accounts.

“Governor Obaseki should be told in clear terms that his actions are under watch and he should know that he would in the long run be accountable for his actions no matter how devilish he couch them.

“It is high time he is told that he should squarely face the affairs of State Governance which he was voted to administer and keep off issues of royalty and traditional rulership.

“The soon to be returned stolen Benin Artefacts are of the Benin Heritage and only the Omo N’Oba N’Edo is the custodian of Benin Culture and Tradition or his representative can handle it on behalf of the Benin People.

“For the umpteenth time, we are advising Godwin Obaseki to stay clear of issues relating to the Benin Custom and Tradition so that he will not get his scalp burn in this his incessant interferences.”
