Kyari: Nigeria’s Supercop Who Fetes The Underworld

0
Abba Kyari - DCP

By Bayo Bernard

When Nigeria’s super cop Abba Kyari appeared in a photograph with Nigerian billionaire businessman, Obinna Iyiegbu, popularly called Obi Cubana in Oba, Anambra state during the burial ceremony of the celebrity club owner’s mother, not a few consider his action very controversial.

The sterling burial ceremonies attracted the crème of the Nigeria’s business community, even though controversies also loomed about some of the people that attended the event, and why a respected police officer would be seen at such social event.

While defending himself, the Kyari argued that it’s not out of place for him to attend the burial because Cubana is his friend.

Analysts also insist that Obi Cubana is not a criminal, therefore nothing is wrong with Kyari associating with him.

But the police officer has further been put on the spot for his alleged link to Ramon Olorunwa Abbas, aka Husspoppi, a popular international fraud star arrested last year by the Federal Bureau of Intelligence, FBI in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Not a few are now asking serious questions as to what Kyari is really up to.

Indeed, Kyari has not managed to steer off controversies despite his public reputation as one of the nation’s respected police officer. A Deputy Commissioner of Police with many prestigious awards to his name, Kyari who heads the Inspector General of Police, IGP Intelligence Response Team, IRT an elite club of police officers that specializes in busting crimes in the country, has been quite lucky considering the manner he has risen through the ranks.

Hussppopi Abbas
Hussppopi: Allegedly Bribed Kyari with $1 million

Some of his achievements include the arrest, in 2017, of a notorious kidnapper, Chukwudi Onuamadike aka Evans in Lagos, and his novel effort in bringing Taraba state kindpin, Hamisu Wadume to book to answer for his crimes.

Recently too, Kyari’s team was drafted to the South East to arrest some notorious Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB members who almost turned Imo and other states in the region, to a killing field. The Kyari-led team performed excellently well, alongside other security forces as the violence in the Governor Hope Uzodinma-led state ala the entire south east has now abated.

But his unequalled ability to fete members of the underworld has also earned him trophies among keen public watchers, who have not stopped wondering why a respected cop would be associated with questionable characters such as MC Oluomo, the Chairman of NURTW.

The chairman of commercial bus drivers in Lagos is linked to top politicians in the state, including Bola Tinubu, National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC and widely known for his involvement in the series of violence that has plagued the State of Aquatic Splendor, as Lagos is known for quite a long time.

Infamous for international fraud, Abbas, who is currently standing trial in the USA for committing miscellaneous internet fraud has opened up on how he allegedly bribed Kyari with $1 million to arrest a rival, Kelly Chibuzor Vincent after a business deal went awry.

Abbas’ is standing trial for his role in the school-finance scheme, as well as several other cyber and business email compromise schemes that cumulatively caused more than $24million in losses to his victims.

The fraudster who has now pleaded guilty for his crimes on April 20 is awaiting a verdict from a US court, which could earn him at least 20 years jail term.

While giving his testimony, Abba outlined how he employed Kyayi to go after his rival when a $1 million dollar deal involving the duo broke down. The syndicate had duped Qatari businessperson to the tune of the sum, but failed to agree on how to share proceed from the fraud.

To gain upper hand in the dog fight that ensued, Abbas caused Kyari to arrest and put in prison his partner in crime for a fee of ‘$1 million’ according to his testimony in the US court.

The court documents “outline a dispute among members of the conspiracy, which allegedly prompted Vincent to contact the victim and claim that Abbas and Juma were engaged in fraud. After this contact, Abbas allegedly arranged to have Vincent jailed in Nigeria by Abba Alhaji Kyari, 46, of Nigeria.

“According to the affidavit, Kyari is a highly decorated deputy commissioner of the Nigeria Police Force who is alleged to have arranged for Vincent to be arrested and jailed at Abbas’ behest, and then sent Abbas photographs of Vincent after his arrest. Kyari also allegedly sent Abbas bank account details for an account into which Abbas could deposit payment for Vincent’s arrest and imprisonment,” U.S. Justice department said in a statement.

The court documents also revealed how Abbas spent the cash to satisfy his ostentatious lifestyle.

“Approximately $230,000 of the stolen funds allegedly were used to purchase a Richard Mille RM11-03 watch, which was hand delivered to Abbas in Dubai and subsequently appeared in Hushpuppi’s social media posts.

“Other illicit proceeds from the scheme were allegedly converted into cashier’s checks, including $50,000 in checks that were used by Abbas and a co-conspirator to fraudulently acquire a St. Christopher and Nevis citizenship, as well as a passport for Abbas obtained by creating a false marriage certificate and then bribing a government official in St. Kitts,” US officials said.

Meanwhile, Kyari has denied the allegation, claiming that Abbas associate was arrested because he allegedly threatened the family of Abbas. According to him “Nobody demanded any money from Abbas Hussppupi and nobody collected any money from him. We responded to a distress call he made on threat to his family and released the suspect when we discovered there was no life threat from the suspect,” Kyari said.

Lagos Kicks Off Online Vehicle License Renewal

0

By Fola James

The Lagos state government has taken a bold step to eliminate some of the human factors that inhibit vehicle license registration and renewal in the state. Vehicles owners have serially complained of delay caused by state officials whenever they are processing their vehicle documents.

This will soon be a thing of the past, according to information coming from the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu-led administration.

From August 1, vehicles owners can now avail themselves of the opportunity of registering or renewing their vehicle license online in the special porter that has now been created by the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency, MVAA the agency responsible for vehicle licensing in the state.

MVAA disclosed on Wednesday that its newly introduced vehicle registration portal via https: portal.autoreg.ng will allow individuals renew their vehicle licenses seamlessly from the comfort of their homes.

The General Manager of MVAA, Lape Kilanko, who disclosed this during a stakeholders’ meeting at Alausa, Ikeja, noted that the concept is part of the agency’s efforts at enhancing service delivery in the area of vehicle documentation in Lagos State.

She explained that the hitherto common practice of visiting MVAA stations before renewal of vehicle licence could be done will soon be a thing of the past, stressing that with the laudable innovation, the vehicle information is secured as only the details supplied by the vehicle owner will be updated on the page.

Kilanko said, “The platform is easy to use for vehicle owners as all they need to do is Sign up, Enter their vehicle license number, login, Initiate Renewal and Make Payment. They will receive SMS/email notifications while awaiting the delivery of the customised Vehicle Licence via approved logistics/delivery courier. In the alternative, they can approach the nearest MVAA station to print the customised Vehicle Licence by showing their SMS/Email notifications”.

She explained further that that the process is a seamless one that requires little effort and implored Lagosians, especially drivers and vehicle owners, not to wait until they are apprehended by law enforcement agents before renewing their documents.

Meanwhile, some vehicle owners who spoke with the magazine on the issue said they are worried that state officials who depend of the old regime for survival could frustrate the process for their own personal gain.

Imo: Security Agencies Burst Oil Theft Gang; Uzodimma Lauds Them

0
Hope Uzodimma

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has commended the security agencies for bursting illegal oil bunkering syndicates operating in the State,  describing the effort as a major breakthrough.

He said by uprooting members of the  syndicate from their base, and dismantling their illegal refineries, the security operatives are helping to restore confidence in those doing genuine businesses and contributing to the development of the society.

The Governor spoke when he visited the headquarters of the Directorate of Security Services (DSS) in Owerri on Monday to assess the quantity of petroleum products seized from the suspects s well as the persons caught by the security operatives in relation to the oil bunkering and illegal refining of crude.

The Governor noted that illegal oil bunkering and refineries has of late been on the increase, regretting that the activities have caused serious economic dent on the Federal Government and by extension, the State Governments revenue.

The Governor said:  “The consequences of these illegal practices have been that the federal revenue has gone down so much, the State revenue, also by extension, has equally gone down.”

The Governor said that the offence of illegal oil bunkering and refining is a very serious one, noting that “apart from being a national economic sabotage it has not helped matters in the determined efforts to reduce crime in the southern part of the country.”

Governor Uzodimma recalled that oil companies have of late bore the brunt of the nefarious activities of the operators of illegal refineries and those vandalizing oil pipelines and stealing crude oil in Nigeria.

He therefore reassured that “Government will do her best to continue to go against those in the illegal business to help conserve Federal Government revenue and by extension, that of the State, and as well bring sanity to the operating environment of oil companies in Nigeria.”

He expressed joy that so far the efforts of government and the security agencies in  partnering to sanitize the environment against crime and criminality is yielding positive result.

The Governor pointed out that members of the syndicate were “caught on their various places of operations where they were practicing their activities on the various illegal deport they established for the refined oil.”

He explained that the value of what was found on members of the gang in terms of naira and kobo is huge and runs into ” hundreds of millions of naira.”

“The reassuring good news is that the culprits have confessed to the crime because they were caught in the act,” the Governor explained.

The Governor therefore thanked the security agencies “for a job well done” and enjoined them “not to relent”

He also urged the public to be vigilant and report any case of illegal practice “be it in oil or other security breaches to the security agencies for prompt action.”

OPINION: One Day, Four Court Cases

0
Reuben Abati

By Reuben Abati

“Ore, I looked for you yesterday? Where were you?”

“I dey for house now? Where I for dey?”

“I actually thought you had gone to a court somewhere to do amebo. You know you like to poke-nose into other people’s matters? And yesterday was a special, historic day, with four court cases that generations yet unborn will read about”

“You have started again. You are actually the real Mr. Amebo of Nigeria. Every little thing you are ever-ready like Ever Ready Battery to do chor chor chor. Don’t you ever get tired?”

“Ever Ready Battery. Ha. You don’t forget things. Do they still make such batteries? That was when Nigeria was Nigeria and the manufacturing sector produced so much locally, and people had jobs and the country was prosperous. My uncle used to go to London almost every weekend. Money was not a problem. Nigeria itself was ever ready. But now see see…the country is a shadow of its former self. That is why you have so many angry youths all over the place. They have no sense of values. They have no memory of Nigeria’s greatness. They have been brought up on a diet of Satanic negativity.”

“Ï know. I know. I still hear some people talk about Ever Ready though. But do you know when I tried to look for Ever Ready Batteries the other day, it turned out what they now call ever ready was some sort of aphrosidiac, some kind of herbal concoction that is supposed to increase your libido, result in instant enlargement and give you unimaginable joy of celestial proportions. It was actually a woman that recommended it to me.”

“Ha. A woman. Your battery failed, and they recommended Ever Ready. I know. I know. Nigeria has become a house of sin. You are talking about a multi-billion-dollar business, by the way. From Suruka to Surutu, Kolagbo, Osomo, Koboko, Techno, Monkey

Tail. Pasa-Bitters, Erujeje,..”

“Ëx-cu-se me?”

“Wafekulaleyi, Ali Baba, Wasalaye, Baby Oku, Kick and Start, Oga Nla, Jeko mo, Agbara, Dorobucchi, Opa Eyin, Dadubule, Pakurumo, Bajinotu, 301, Stone, Jabra, Japata, Jakomu….”

“Can you stop? I don’t want to talk about aphrodisiacs and the obsession of Nigerians with sin.”

“That is your problem. It is not every thing that is about big grammar. I am giving you an idea of how Nigeria has failed. How a country that used to produce scientists and intellectuals is now producing a generation of celebrities and heroes who are making billions from selling sex or beer and pleasure. We have become a nation of consumers of all sorts of depravity. We are no longer a nation of producers of ideas or executors of grand schemes. Old money in Nigeria was represented by the productive class. New money is dominated by a generation of consumers, exhibitionists and their mad, bad agents.”

“Look, this man, leave me alone. Whoever wants to drink whatever with their mouths should go ahead and do so. Our only point of agreement is that something terrible has happened to this country, and things could get worse, morally, politically and socially if we do not exercise caution and care. We need to remind ourselves of basic normative values and have a conversation around that.  You see all this your beer parlour, street talk, won’t help.”

“Dey there. Dey there dey form. We are all human beings at the end of the day, I beg. You mean you don’t know that it is the entire world that has gone mad? Humanity has crossed the point of no return. That is why some wealthy men are already planning to relocate to outer space. Elon Musk. Jeff Bezos. When the human planet fails, they will enter their space jets and escape. Na you and me and people like us go remain for this Earth. Our only problem is that we will be stuck in this place called Nigeria, in the midst of rapists, kidnappers, bandits, terrorists, corporate thieves, drug barons, yahoo masters, and vote-riggers.”

“Not even Alvin Toffler was this pessimistic in The Future Wave.”

“Toffee what? Who is that?”

“Never mind. Never mind.  You are not likely to know someone like that. You were talking about court cases before you digressed in your usual manner. You need to see a therapist. What about the courts?”

“I told you there were four major court cases yesterday that were of historic and significant interest, and I wanted to know whether you attended any one of them?”

“Why should I? I told you I was at home. Which cases are these?”

“You don’t mean it? Don’t go and say this in public please. People will think you have a problem.”

“I don’t get it”

“Okay let me help you out because you are too young to have dementia. Yesterday, in Abuja, Nnamdi Kanu’s case came up again at the court of Justice Binta Nyako. He was not produced in court. The security agents did not allow his supporters to even approach the court premises. At a point the Court was even closed. Lawyers were shut out of court. Imagine! His lawyers were not even notified according to due process. There were security men all over the place, harassing journalists and every one. People were arrested.”

“Hen Hen.”

“I thought you would have been there to observe and analyze the situation”

“To get involved in a matter before the court? How? That would be sub judice”

“That is not the issue here. This is a political trial. The issue is self-determination which is recognized under Article 1 of the UN Charter.”

“I am sorry, I can’t discuss this matter with you. Whatever I say will be misinterpreted by an illiterate, rampaging, insecure mob. We have lost the culture of reason and debate in this country. Every one is in their own ethnic capsule. A country that has destroyed its intellectual class is in real danger. This is what has happened to Nigeria. You were looking at Nigeria from the perspective of human libido, I am sorry, the bigger tragedy is the apparent death of ideas and the failure of capacity to think even among the most educated.”

“Who needs education anymore in this country? Just make money. Take aphrodisiacs. Dominate women and men and recruit idiots with all sorts of fake certificates and titles to worship you. That is the new Nigeria.

What do you think of self-determination?”

“Ï have nothing against self-determination. It is a universal right recognized under Article 1 of the 1949 UN Charter. Many countries have broken up: India in 1947, Pakistan broke up in 1971 to produce Bangladesh, in 1776, the United States emerged out of the UK, in 1965, Singapore rose out of Malaysia, in 1993, the old Czechoslovakia became two countries: Czech Republic and Slovakia. Sudan and South Sudan used to be one country.”

“So what are you saying?”

“Ï am not saying anything. Read my lips. It is in a neutral mode. The way this country is today, you won’t know what you’d say it will be misinterpreted. That is what I was telling you earlier: the bigger tragedy in Nigeria today is the triumph of intolerance and abnormality. There is a supremacy of the lunatic fringe at work, playing all kinds of games: ethnic, political, cultural and opportunistic. When you say something, they twist it. When you don’t say anything, they put words in your mouth and use that to blackmail you. They are so energetic, the only conclusion you can reach is that this is now a country in the grips of mass psychosis. We need help.”

“So, is that why you didn’t go to Abuja?”

“Ï cannot answer that question. Did you go there yourself? Too many of you want other people to act and speak on your behalf in the public space but you are all busy acting like cowards and paid hacks. Many don’t even have the courage to bear their own father’s names. I am all in support of justice, fairness and due process, but nothing beyond that.”

“But what of Cotonou? Did you follow the court trial of Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho?”

“Yes, I did, as an observer”

Q

“You mean you were there, physically?”

“No”

“Why not?”

“Ï don’t have to be anywhere physically to know what is going on. Every revolution is on television.”

“But you know, I think it is a shame that Nigeria that used to be described as the giant of Africa is now having such domestic issues that every body is now talking about how Kenya got involved in Nigeria’s affairs, and how Republic of Benin, the same Benin that is generally regarded as the 37th State of Nigeria is now a major factor in Nigerian matters. How are the mighty fallen?”

“Kenya and Benin are sovereign states. They are independent jurisdictions.  I know there are many rich Nigerians who go about boasting that the President of some African countries are their boys and Personal Assistants but it is important to know that at critical moments those same countries will assert themselves as sovereign states.”

“You mean the Republic of Benin next door will disobey the Nigerian government?”

”The last time I checked Kenya and Benin Republic are sovereign states. Nigeria is not in a position to dictate to them. Benin even has a different justice system. Its leaders would rather listen to France, their former colonial masters, certainly not Nigeria.”

“If they misbehave in Benin, common Benin, we can shut down our borders against them.”

“The last time you did, what happened? Did Benin disappear as a country?”

“You are supporting Benin Republic against Nigeria? You are one of the hidden secessionists?”

“I am not going nowhere. I am here. Na inside Nigeria I go live and die. You push me, I push am, na inside Nigeria I go live and die.”

“The more reason you should take a stand.”

“Äre you deaf? This country is becoming very tough. We all have to be very careful”

“The man dies in all who keep silent in the face of tyranny.”

“You try. Too many Nigerians quoting statements they know nothing about.”

“You are professing cowardice. We must take our country back.”

“Why not? Go ahead. Just let me be.”

“With the way you are talking, I am sure you did not even bother to show interest in Baba Ijesha’s case on Monday? The rape case involving the Nollywood actor who was accused of raping an under-aged girl and who is now facing trial?”

“The case is now in court. It is before the judicial system. I don’t support rape or violence of any sort. But why should my going to court be an issue?”

“As a concerned citizen”

“Me?”

“Yes”

“No. Were you there yourself? Marketer of Surutu and Suruka? Is that not the same case where one Babalawo predicted the death of one actress and he, the Babalawo died before the trial began and the actress whose death he predicted was all over the court yesterday?”

“What has that got to do with you?”

“Everything. I am a Christian. I don’t walk near the valley of the shadow of Death. Those Nollywood people, their own matter na aye mo juba.”

“You are just a coward. But how about the fourth case? Yesterday Uduak Akpan, the killer of Iniobong Umoren was arraigned before a State High Court in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. He pleaded guilty.”

“Am I a spirit? You want me to be in Abuja, Cotonou, Lagos, and Uyo in one day. Look at this way: Inside Buhari’s Nigeria, everything don spoil”

“I hear say him don travel sef. He don go London.”

“Can you see now that you are a bad person? With all the things you have been saying, the man that Nigerians elected as President decided to leave town the same day, and you are asking me to put my head.”

“He went to London for medical check-up and a virtual conference about how these matters can be addressed.”

“Wh-a-at nonsense is that? How can a President go to London for a virtual conference? Don’t we have internet in Nigeria?”

“He is not alone. The President of Malawi also travelled to London with a 10-person delegation for the same virtual conference because the internet in his country is bad…”

“You are not making sense. Okay, me I dey here for Nigeria.”

“Doing what?”

“Keeping safe. Chopping isi ewu. And watching the Olympics”

“Olympics? You think Nigeria can win anything?”

“The Olympics is not about winning. It is about participating and the spirit of being part of it. Team Nigeria does not need to win anything”

“Don’t write them off. It is too early to do so.”

“But the country is not in a winning mode. That is why the other thing I do these days is to watch Big Brother Nigeria Season 6.”

“I thought you used to criticize the programme.”

“Yes. But the kind of girls that are on that programme this time around, e be like say dem get special craze. I need some therapy. Watching them alone calms down my nerves.”

“You see you are also a sinner like the rest of us. You dey watch Abeg and Patricia.”

“I confess, bros. Go see those girls first. Something dey there, no be small.”

Ondo Gov Election: Jegede’s Final Fall: Supreme Court Affirms Akeredolu’s Victory

Rotimi Akeredolu

By Ayodele Oni

“For the records, Candidate Eyitayo Jegede, SAN, of the PDP has been on a losing spree. From the Election to the Election Trbunal, to the Appeal Court, and now the Apex Court, it has been a basket of loses for him – waste of time, and waste of money”

Legal hurdles over the 2020  Governorship election in Ondo state has finally been laid to rest. The Supreme Court on Wednesday affirmed the election of Mr Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN, as the duly elected governor of the state.

The Supreme Court in a unanimous judgement  dismissed the appeal filed by the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, (PDP) Mr Eyitayo Jegede, SAN, challenging the victory of the candidate of the All Progressive Congress, (APC).

Reading the lead judgement,  Justice Mary Peter-Odili said the case filed by Jegede lacked merit. Meaning that Jegede simply wasted money and time.

According to her, Jegede, and the PDP should have joined the Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni in their case.

Governor Buni is the Chairman Caretaker Committee of the APC, and has been in the saddle since the dissolution of Adams Oshiomole-led National Executive.

The  Supreme Court’s seven member panel, led by Peter- Odili had earlier adjourned, after listening to submissions from parties till noon and later reconvened to deliver the judgement.

For the records, Jegede has been on a losing spree – from the Tribunal to the Appeal Court, and now, the Supreme Court.

The Court of Appeal led by Justice Theresa Orji-Abadua had last month dismissed the petition filed by the PDP candidate and affirmed Mr Akeredolu as the winner of the poll.

The  Court had, out of seven issues raised for determination, resolved four and half in favour of Jegede and the rest two and a half in favour of Akeredolu.

Dissatisfied with the decision of the Appellate Court, Gov Akeredolu, Mr Jegede, and INEC approached the Supreme Court for the invalidation of both the Election Petition Tribunal and Appeal Court judgements.

Federal University, Oye Ekiti

By Ayodele Oni

Reprieve has come for the two embattled Principal Officers of the Federal University, Oye Ekiti, (FUOYE) as the Senate ruled that they should be reinstated back to their positions.

The affected staff, Mr  Olatunbosun Odusanya the Registrar, and Mrs Bolatito Akande the Bursar, are to return to their offices within 15 working days.

The Senate Committee on Ethics and Public Petitions, headed by Senator Pius Akinyelure, who read the ruling, explained that allegations levelled against them are not strong enough to sack them.

The University Council Chairman and Vice Chancellor were also mandated by the Committee to honour the Senate as an Institution by ensuring that their promise to ensure that the two Princpal officers who have served  meritoriously for years should not be disgraced out of office by termination for offences that cannot be substantiated.

The two officers will, however, proceed on sabbatical leave to enable peace to reign on the campus.

The Senate Committee which sat for several hours on Tuesday, also, resolved issues involving the DG/CEO of National Institute for Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA) by Alhaji Haruna Yahaya and two others.

The petitioner wrote against the DG over his alleged abandonment of his duty post, gross misconduct and deliberate attempt to frustrate and humiliate the former Principal Officers of NIEPA.

Ruling on the petition,  Senator Akinyelure, said, “I can see that there is no harmony and love among the DG/CEO and some of his staff and this is why things are not moving forward in the Institute as expected.

“I want to, therefore, rule that the short-changed staff should be reinstated to their former positions which the DG promised would be done.”

Likewise, the cases between Danladi Sunday Oladele and Akeju Babatunde versus Yaba College of Technology whose appointments were terminated, were resolved in favour of the petitioners.

The Committee Chairman commended the Position of Yaba College of Technology Rector to resolve the matters amicably through direct intervention with the Chairman of the Governing Council.

The Committee mandated the petitioner to submit an acknowledgment copy of the Appeal to the Chairman of Council of Yaba College Technology within the next seven working days for further legislative action.

And that the fact that the publications were read by the general public has been confirmed further by the phone calls that have trailed the said publications which calls were put across to the Claimant by his Pastors, Governors, Senators, Honourable Members of both Federal House of Representatives and State Houses of Assembly, Commissioners and many prominent members of the PeoplesDemocratic Party nationwide have portrayed his personality in bad light

Omo'Oba Tsola Emiko - Olu of Warri

By Akinwale Kasali

A coalition of Yoruba Groups under the aegis of O’odua Nationalist Coalition, ONAC, has expressed its full support for the Olu of Warri designate, Omo’Oba Tsola Emiko.

The Group said that Emiko deserves the full and unconditional support of Yoruba and Itsekiri people all over the world.

In a statement it issued after the group’s fact-finding mission to Warri, Delta State, the coalition of 35 different Pan Yoruba groups condemned attempts to distort the historical ties between Yoruba and Itsekiri through Chief Ayiri Emani’s court action.

The statement duly signed by ONAC Deputy Chairman, Chief Samuel Akindele and General Secretary,  Omowumi Adebo said millions of Yoruba and Itsekiri people all over the world are disappointed with Chief Ayiri’s role in fuelling disunity and conflict in Warri and beyond.

ONAC said the position of Chief Ayiri that someone cannot become the Olu of Warri because the mother is Yoruba is embarrassing and a complete distortion of time honoured records.

“We are shocked by the position of Chief Ayiri. It is a known fact that Itsekiri is one of the sub ethnic groups of Oduduwa. There are some 25 sub-Yoruba ethnic groups. When the proponents of the Edict mentioned Itsekiri and Bini origin, they did not exclude Yoruba” ONAC  said

The group said Chief Ayiri’s action has the potential of distorting history and creating discord between the children of Oduduwa

“The Bini Royal Family is a product of Oduduwa, the Yoruba progenitor. It means that any Royalty in Bini has iota of Yoruba blood. The same way there is hardly any Itsekiri family without a link to Oduduwa. For centuries, we have seen ourselves as belonging to one family. We urge Chief Ayiri not to put his name in the darkest part of history”

ONAC said the visits of its officials to Warri indicate that the new Olu designate is very popular and well accepted among majority of Itsekiri people, young and old, men and women adding that Chief Ayiri stands obviously in the minority.

“The plot by Chief Ayiri will not only create disaffection among Itsekiri, it will set in motion instability which is the least Itsekiri and Yoruba people need at this critical moment that unity of purpose is needed.

“Chief Ayiri does not need to fight the entire Yoruba or Itsekiri Nation. He should be conscious of history and how his role will be recorded. History is kind to peace makers but harsh on the path of those who nurture mischief and conflict. We advice Chief Ayiri to toe the path of honour and allow peace to reign for the prosperity of the Warri Kingdom.

“Yoruba people all over the world will be sending strong delegation  to Warri to monitor court proceedings and also provide all the necessary support for truth and justice to be done in Itsekiri land”, the statement emphasised.

CBN Tightens Belt On Money Changers, Warns Money Banks

The federal government has stepped up its clampdown on Bureau de Change in the country following the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN’s decision to stop sale of foreign currencies to the money changers.

The reasons may not be farfetched. The Godwin-Emefiele-led Apex bank believes that some bureau de change have become conduits for criminals to launder hard currencies for their nefarious activities. Some operators have recently been linked to funneling funds to sponsors of terrorism.

Earlier in the year, 26 operators were arrested by security operatives for alleged unlawful foreign exchange transactions.

Speaking after the end of the monthly Monetary Policy Committee, MPC meeting in Abuja, the CBN Governor said commercial banks will now receive forex from the government bank, and will in turn sell to Nigerians who make legitimate demand.

After receiving 5,000 new applications every month for BDC registration, Emefiele said bureau de change business operators have abandoned their objective as middle men for forex transactions. Rather, the operators have turned themselves to conduit for illegal financial flows working with corrupt people to conduct money laundering in Nigeria, the CBN boss said.

The operators, Emefiele said “have turned themselves away from their objectives. They are now agents that facilitate graft and corruption in the country. We cannot continue with the bad practices that are happening at the BDC market.”

He accused them of collaborating with foreign interests to undermine the country’s security, warning that erring operators will henceforth be dealt with.

According to him “Several international organisations, embassies patronise BDC through illegal forex dealer to fund their institutions.

“We will deal ruthlessly with Nigerian banks that deal with illegal BDCs and we will report foreign organisations patronising them.”

He explained that the CBN will now channel weekly allocations of dollar sales to commercial banks to meet legitimate Forex demands.

Earlier in April, CBN said it has secured an interim order of a federal high court in Abuja to freeze 194 bank accounts belonging to individuals and BDCs over different infractions.

The apex bank also secured an order to freeze 60 bank accounts of Bluebeam Capital Limited, another order to freeze 84 accounts in 17 banks and order to freeze 50 accounts domiciled in different banks.
