OPINION: Kanu is Technically Still in Kenya

0

By Aloy Ejimakor

Yes, that’s right: In the purest interpretations of foreign relations law, as applied to Britain and Kenya, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is technically speaking, still in Kenya. How? Dual national or not, Kanu departed Britain and travelled to Kenya as a British citizen and Kenya admitted him as such. That’s the starting point.

So, after his admission to Kenya, it happens that Kanu must be expelled from Kenyan soil (with or without due process), the next natural and legal thing to do is for Kenya to expel him to Britain, not Nigeria. Choosing to expel him to Nigeria means that he could’ve also been expelled to any other country than Nigeria.

Why? Because Kanu presented himself to Kenya as a British citizen, not a Nigerian citizen or even a dual citizen. In international law, it was clearly a three-way immigration contract between Kanu, Britain and Kenya. Nigeria was not a party to it; and Nigeria was never in reckoning at the Kenyan port of entry when Kanu presented himself for admission. Lawyers call it privity of contract.

Further, counting from the time of Kanu’s abduction to the infamous rendition, Kenya sighted no other travel document that could’ve, in addition to Britain, attributed another nationality to Kanu, including that of Nigeria. Or, was Kanu admitted to Kenya on a Nigerian birth certificate?

So, it’s dubious that Kenya attributed Nigerian citizenship to Kanu merely because those that sponsored the abduction and rendition presumably told Kenya that Kanu was borne in Nigeria. What about the credible claims (in public domain) that Kanu had renounced his Nigerian citizenship? If place of birth should count, then renunciation should count for more.

Put another way, unless Kenya was shown Kanu’s Nigerian birth certificate, it is expected to presume Kanu as a British citizen only. After all, beyond a birth certificate, a passport is the next best proof of citizenship. Verbal assertions of place of birth is, as a matter of immigration and nationality law, an insufficient proof of citizenship.

Nonetheless, if Kenya was in any doubt as to where Kanu should be expelled, it should have resorted to the competent international laws on point.

The most obvious of such laws is codified at Article 5 of the Hague Convention on Certain Questions Relating to the Conflict of Nationality Law, which states that: “Within a third State, a person having more than one nationality shall be treated as if he had only one. A third State shall, of the nationalities which any such person possesses, recognise exclusively in its territory either the nationality of the country in which he is habitually and principally resident, or the nationality of the country with which in the circumstances he appears to be in fact most closely connected”.

As can be seen from above, Kanu was required to meet one of two conditions in order to be treated by Kenya ‘exclusively’ as either a citizen of Nigeria or Britain.

So, let’s put Kanu into what the Hague Convention says and see how he comes out.

Nnamdi Kanu
Nnamdi Kanu

Fact: Kanu is 53 years old. Out of this, he has spent some 30 years in Britain and 23 years in Nigeria. His wife and children are domiciled in Britain and they are British citizens, either by birth or naturalization. Kanu has his home in Britain and pays his taxes there.

Another fact: Kanu’s main occupations – Radio Biafra and IPOB – are corporate citizens of Britain in good standing, both having been duly registered in Britain. And Kanu runs both of them from British soil.

Conversely, the last time Kanu visited Nigeria, he was arbitrarily arrested, persecuted and detained for eighteen months. In time, he was nearly killed under circumstances that would be considered State-sponsored murder, which is a crime against humanity under the Rome Statute.

So, as you can easily see from above, Britain is where Kanu is ‘habitually and principally resident, as well as the country with which, in the circumstances, he appears to be in fact most closely connected’. If, like Kenya, you think Nigeria qualifies by a stretch, then you must be thinking that being in jail for nearly two years and surviving extrajudicial murder are good attributes of citizenship.

Thus, Kenya (being the third country) should have treated Kanu exclusively as a British citizen because, even as the Hague Convention required Kanu to meet one of two conditions, he actually over-qualified by meeting both conditions.

Therefore, as a strict matter of foreign relations law, as applied to Britain and Kenya (minus Nigeria), Kanu is technically still in Kenya. How? Because Kenya was the last country in which Kanu – a bonafide British citizen was lawfully admitted.

In other words, subsequent to his admission to Kenya, Kanu desired to depart from Kenya, the only country he could have legally departed to was Britain, not Nigeria. Why? Kenyan immigration would not have allowed Kanu to depart to Nigeria without him presenting either a Nigerian passport or a Nigerian visa.

In view of the foregoing, the next best steps for Britain to take, especially in the face of Nigeria’s intransigence, is to ask Kenya to account for the whereabouts of her citizen, Nnamdi Kanu, last seen in Kenya as of June 19th, 2021 as her Majesty’s subject and a free citizen of Britain, not a criminal suspect.

Once Britain sits up, Kenya – whether complicit or not – would begin to appreciate the true legal and diplomatic implications of failing to protect a bonafide British citizen who made his last lawful immigration stop on Kenyan soil. And Nigeria too will begin to realize that Kanu’s presence in Nigeria is unlawful and unsustainable.

Lagos:Right Group, HEDA, Says 50% Pension Slash For Ex-Governors Hypocritical

0

By Akinwale Kasali

Human Rights Group, Human and Environmental Development Agenda, HEDA, has described the 50 per cent Pension reduction for Ex-Governors by the Lagos State House of Assembly as hypocritical.

The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has, therefore, been asked by HEDA to immediately withhold his assent to the Bill by the Assembly.

It would be recalled that the Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa led Lagos State House of Assembly had, over the week, announced that former Governors of the State would now receive half of what the State used to give them as pension after leaving office.

Part of the pension benefits include, but not limited to cash in millions of naira, a fleet of cars to be changed every three years and a retirement house to be built for them all at public expense.

HEDA, however, said that the decision of the Lagos State Assembly and the State Government to reduce the pension of former Governors by 50 percent is a breach of the earlier public commitment and original Bill submitted to the Assembly by the State Governor, Sanwo-Olu, to entirely abolish the privilege.

When Governor Sanwo Olu got to the saddle as the Executive Governor of the State, he had earlier said that the State was going to stop the reckless and insensitive package.

HEDA’s Chairman, Olanrewaju Suraju, in a statement said the reduction to 50 percent betrays the earlier public commitment of the state governor to abolish the practice and falls short of the remarkable revocation of similar laws by Kwara and Zamfara States.

“We are shocked by the hypocritical and selfish decision of the State House of Assembly to reduce the package for the former State Governors rather than approving the proposal as sent by the State’s executive. The truth of the matter is that, having served the state for between four to eight years, with their salaries and emoluments paid apart from a string of pecks and privileges including unquestionable security votes, it is ridiculous that the public will continue to shoulder their personal needs after they have left the office” Suraju said.

HEDA said the former governors are not career workers like civil servants who often put in up to 35 years into public service. He said the 50 percent slash fails to address the fundamental issue which is that the former governors do not deserve to live on public funds after they have left to continue their mostly profit driven private businesses.

“The decision of the Lagos State House of Assembly is unilateral and even amounts to crying more than the bereaved. There were no consultations with the public. The elected members did not hold any discussion with the electorate. There was a kangaroo public hearing on the floor of the house. This is not a popular decision but a step taken to please their political godfathers” Suraju said.

He argued that payment to former Governors is a decision that has to be taken in consultation with the tax payers and not an imposition by 40 members of the State House of Assembly.

“The country is facing declining economic glory. Hunger and starvation are ravaging the land. It is ridiculous that what the elected officials are thinking of is the special economic protection for former governors” HEDA said. The anti-graft group said the attitude of the lawmakers is like pouring water in an ocean adding that the ex-governors are already more than comfortable and do not need pampering at public expense. He urged the Lagos State Government to concentrate on providing stimulus packages that can create more jobs and address the growing youth unemployment in the state which threatens the livelihood of millions of people in the State.

Under the new package the ex-governors will now receive three new cars to be changed every four years and huge financial supports. There were speculations that office of Speaker of the Assembly was also smuggled into the list of beneficiaries of the largesse.

National President of Pensioners laud Uzodimma for regular payment of pensions

Hope Uzodimma on Penson Payment

The National President of Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Chief Godwin Ikechukwu Abumisi, has commended  Governor Hope Uzodimma for regular and prompt payment of pensioners in Imo State.

He said “pensioners are now happy and rejoicing because His Excellency has removed the anomalies of past administration of Rochas Okorocha.”

The President of NUP gave the commendation at the New Executive Council Chambers, Government House Owerri, when he led the National as well as State Executives on a courtesy visit to the Governor.

Receiving them, Governor Uzodimma assured them of his commitment to the welfare of their members and readiness to support and cooperate with the leadership of the NUP even as he  challenged them to see government as partners in progress.

Governor Uzodimma who was excited that for the first time NUP has a President of South East extraction commended the body for living up to their bidding of ensuring that their laid down rules were followed which resulted to the emergence of a president of South East extraction.

He commended the officers from the South East and other Union Executives from other parts of the country for exhibiting patrotism, trust and confidence on their members no matter where they come from.

The Governor challenged the new President of NUP to see his emergence “as a call to national duty which carries a lot of expectations” with the reasoning that under his administration the Union will be better than it is today.

He challenged his members, both the National and State, who accompanied the President on the visit to rally round him to ensure that Abumisi’s “administration will be remembered for good even by those that will come after him.”

The Governor, on behalf of the Government and people of Imo State,  promised to continue to partner and support the Executive and members of the Union by ensuring prompt payment of pensions in Imo State.

On the other issues of welfare of pensioners in Imo State like  check-off dues, arrears of pensions and gratuity, the Governor promised to direct the immediate release of check-off dues.

On arrears of pensions,  he informed that his administration has done a lot in trying to recover from all the damages caused by Okorocha’s administration in Imo State,  emphasizing, “it is your entitlement, so Government has the responsibility to give you what belongs to you.”

He enjoined them to assist him in correcting all the problems surrounding pensions in Imo State to make life more meaningful for all of them.

The Governor appealed to the National President and his members to advise those who have refused to appear for automation to do so and stop blackmailing the government.

Concerning gratuity of pensions which is in arrears of many years, Governor Uzodimma told the NUP that “gratuity will be very difficult for the government to pay arrears now unless the economy improves.”

Concluding,  the Governor also commended the State Chairman, Chief Josiah U Ugochukwu for cooperating with the Government in solving most of the problems surrounding pension issues of the State.

In an address read earlier by the President of NUP, Chief Godwin Abumisi informed the Governor that he had come to present himself and the new officials that will work with him.

Chief Abumisi appealed to the governor  to “use his good offices to reach out to other State Governors who owe pensioners to please pay them their pensions and gratuity.”

He also appealed to the Governor to consider their plight and release to them their check-off dues which he said, “they use in maintenance of their secretariat and payment of allowances to their Executives and other workers.”

The National President solicited continued partnership with his colleagues in Imo and the Governor’s fatherly support in improving their welfare.

He lauded Governor Uzodimma for always choosing the path of dialogue in resolving contentious issues between the State and NUP.

He frowned on those causing problems for government in the name of pensions, noting that most of them are not genuine pensioners rather saboteurs of government.

Introducing the visitors earlier, the State Chairman of NUP and South East Zonal Chairman of NUP,  Chief Ugochukwu told the governor that they have come with all happiness to inform him that “for the first time in many years of NUP existence South East has produced a President of the Union in the person of Chief Godwin Abumisi.”

Ekiti State Gov Fayemi Says Newly Created LCDAs Will Succeed With People’s Cooperation, Signs Bill Into Law

Kayode Fayemi Signing Bills into Law

By Ayodele Oni

Ekiti state Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi said on Friday that the refusal of the people to rise against the scrapping of the Local Council Development Areas, (LCDA) he created during his first tenure made the last administration went away with its action.

The Governor, while signing into law, six newly passed bills by the state House of Assembly in Ado Ekiti explained that on assumption of duty during his second term, he decided to resuscitate the LCDAs because the people yearned for them.

“It will be recalled that this process began during my first term in office. Indeed the then newly created LCDAs had begun functioning before the end of that term.

“Regrettably this initiative was abandoned by the subsequent administration. We are now resuscitating the LCDAs again. Let me immediately say that the decision to revive the creation of LCDAs was not taken lightly.

“Aside from concerns about funding, there are many who have questioned the desire of our people for LCDAs citing the manner in which the previous administration abandoned the idea with little protests from the beneficiary communities.

“I am of the firm opinion that the creation of LCDAs is necessary and important to the socio economic and political development of Ekiti St

“While I recognize the concern about sustainable funding, it is my view that given the efficiency with which we have managed state resources thus far, we will be suitably positioned to lay a solid foundation for the take off of the LCDA.

“What is important at this moment is that the beneficiary communities of the 19 newly created LCDAs work with government to ensure that we make a success of this initiative.

“For emphasis, achieving the efficient functioning of the LCDAs cannot be the exclusive responsibility of government.

“Beneficiary communities must see themselves as active partners in the development of the LCDAS. After signing this into law, the next stage is to formalize the institutional delivery of the 19 LCDAS.

“The State Executive Council constituted a Committee on the Implementation of LCDAs with the following members:

The Honourable Attorney- General & Commissioner for Justice (Chairman); Honourable Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development; Honourable Commissioner for Women Affairs & Social Development; Honourable Commissioner for Local Government Affair, DG Office of Transformation, Strategy and Delivery; Chairman ALGON, Ekiti State and Chairman, Local Government Service Commission.

“This committee will continue to oversee the process for the establishment of the LCDAS.”

Other bills signed into law are Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi today signed the following bills into law; Financial autonomy for Judiciary 2021; Financial autonomy for Legislature 2021; Consumer Protection 2021; Economic Development Council 2021 and Attorney General’s Office 2021.

On consumers protection law, the Governor pointed out that it became imperative as a result of continued rise in prices of goods and services in the state, saying the law would protect consumers.

“We have listened to the complaints by our people about the unwholesome practices that often characterize the sale of good and services in the state.

“The state government has at various times responded to unfair and unjustified increase in the prices of goods and services.  The consumer protection law will promote and protect the rights of consumers in Ekiti State.

“It is noteworthy that the law provides a framework for aggrieved citizens to seek redress against unfair trade practices and the unscrupulous exploitation of consumers.

“Let me use this opportunity to direct the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industries to immediately put in place modalities for the implementation of this law.”

Nigerian Airforce Destroys Bandits Hideout In North West

By Ayodele Oni

As war against Banditry in Nigeria intensifies, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) says its Air component has destroyed a bandit camp in an Air offensive action against bandits in North West Niger.

This was disclosed in a statement by NAF Director, Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Edward Gabwet.

According to him,  this was achieved  during a three-day intensive military operation led by the Air Component of Operation Hadarin Daji, which  focused on locations with high concentration of bandits in Zamfara state.

“Following credible intelligence confirming the mass movement of Bandits on motorcycles, bombardment of the camps commenced on the evening of 2 August 2021 in liaison with ground troops forming blocking forces around the targeted areas of the forest.

“Through these coordinated attacks, over 78 bandits were neutralized, and their camps destroyed.”

In another development, the NAF 404 Force Protection Group stationed in Kaduna, on has arrested a 48-year-old bandits’ logistics runner named, Aminu Saminu, around the Kaduna International Airport.

The report added that the suspect has confessed to disguising himself as a charcoal trader.

“His capture has led to useful informations and citizens are enjoined to keep cooperating with the NAF and sister agencies.”

Ramoni Igbalode, popularly known Hushpuppi

By Akinwale Kasali

Ramon Abass Igbalode, popularly known as Hushpuppi,  has become a household name, carving a niche for himself as an international cybercrime fraudster and a renowned Gucci ambassador.

The travails of Hushpuppi since his arrest by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, FBI, leading to his extradition from the United Arab Emirates to the United States of America for cybercrime fraud have unravelled a lot of secrets about his fraudulent escapades and exposed his accomplices.

Investigation revealed that Hushpuppi was a second hand clothes trader in Lagos, who used his Instagram page to lure his potential victims with billionaire display of flamboyant lifestyle, before he became an international fraudster.

His life is about to hit the big screen.Mo Abudu’s EbonyLife TV, Universal Pictures, and Will Packer Productions have received the adaptation rights for a movie on Hushpuppi based on a Bloomberg story, “The Fall of the Billionaire Gucci Master.”

The action thriller movie is being set up by the trio after the collection of the adaptation which will be based on the Bloomberg story by Evan Ratiff.

The movie will detail how Hushpuppi carried out an internet scam and how he was caught by International police, which will be produced by  Mo Abudu’s EbonyLife Studios in conjunction with Will Packer Productions.

Will Packer Productions is known for producing popular movies like Girls Trip and Night School.

“Ten months ago, Mo pitched us a rich and entertaining concept steeped in Nigerian culture that can only be told with the help of her unique perspective. Together, we knew Evan’s work was the definitive telling and the perfect anchor of this saga,” Will Packer said in a statement.

“We understand the environment of poverty and deprivation that breeds highly talented and fundamentally flawed characters like Hushpuppi, and WPP knows how to create stories with global appeal,” Abudu added in her own statement.

It would be recalled that Hushpuppi attracted millions of followers with pictures of a glamorous jet-setting lifestyle with his Gucci designer outfits. He  was arrested in June 2020 by Dubai police amid claims of a £350 million cyberscam.

He is being detained as part of an investigation into money-laundering, cyber fraud, hacking and scamming.

He has pleaded guilty to his crimes, and could serve as long as 20 years in prison. He would, also, make restitution to the tune of $500,000 or more.

2023: IBB Rejects Atiku, Tinubu; Says 2023 Must Produce A President In His 60s

0

By Akinwale Kasali

“Nigeria remains backward because Nigerians don’t believe in the future of the Nation”

By Akinwale Kasali

Former Military President, Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida, popular as IBB, has deplored the state of the Nation. He is, also, of the view that anybody seeking to be Nigeria’s President in 2023 should be in his/her 60s.

Speaking on Arise TV in an exclusive interview, he said that as the 2023 Presidential Election draws closer, the nation must produce a President that is in his 60s. He thus dashed the hopes of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu by ruling them out of the age bracket.

The top two politicians are eyeing the Presidential seat.  Atiku is, already in his 70s. By 2023, Tinubu, according to him, will be 72.

The man who ousted President Muhammadu Buhari from power in 1985 said that the major reasons why the Nation has failed to progress and achieve the dreams of the founding fathers was because Nigerians no longer believed in the future of their own country.

IBB also pointed out  that the nation is endowed with both human and natural resources, and disclosed that that there are numerous individuals in their 60s whom he said had the capacity to become President and could effectively run the country.

These individuals, he said, have been traversing the six geo political zones marketing their acceptability and capacity.

He, however, lamented that Nigerians are the people creating, and at the same time, destroying their own country.

IBB  identified bad leadership as yet a major reason for the socio-economic challenges facing Nigeria.

“If you get a good leadership that links with the people and tries to talk with the people; not talking on top of the people, then we would be okay.

“I have started visualising a good Nigerian leader. That is, a person, who travels across the country and has a friend virtually everywhere he travels to and he knows at least one person that he can communicate with.

“That is a person, who is very verse in economics and is also a good politician, who should be able to talk to Nigerians and so on. I have seen one, or two or three of such persons already in his sixties.”

He said he believed so much in the future of the nation, but  sad that the people of the nation destroy they what it has created.

“I do believe in the future of Nigeria, but Nigerians don’t believe in the future of their country. They created and they destroy”, he said.

Rough Driving: Late President Yar’Adua Son Kills Four People, Remanded In Prison

0
Umaru YarÁdua

By Akinwale Kasali

Late President Umaru Yar’Adua’s son, Aminu, could be on his way to prison, following the tragic death of four people, caused by him through dangerous driving.

Aminu, a student of American University of Nigeria, AUN, was remanded in prison custody by a Magistrate Court in Yola, Adamawa State Capital on Thursday for, allegedly, killing four people in an auto crash.

The 36- year old was charged to court for allegedly causing death by dangerous driving on 23 June 2021.

According to the police First Information Report (FIR) tendered in court by the prosecutor, Insp. Zakka Musa, the accused had, while driving along Yola bye pass on 23 June, 2021 , crushed six people as a result of over speeding.

The court heard that four of the victims were killed and the other two were injured in the accident. The victims all hail from Sabon Pegi, Yola South Local Government Area.

“Those that died in the accident were identified as; Aisha Umar (30), Aisha Mamadu (32), Suleiman Abubakar (2) and Jummai Abubakar (30), while, Rejoice Annu (28) and Hajara Aliyu (27) sustained injuries,” according to the FIR.

The prosecuting officer told the court that the relatives of late Aisha Umar, Suleiman Abubakar and Jummai Abubakar, had demanded the sum of N15 million from the defendant as compensation.

But, when the FIR was read to the defendant as prayed by the prosecutor, he denied committing the offence, describing the allegation as untrue.

At that point, the prosecutor pleaded with the court to adjourn the matter, to enable him duplicate the case file and forward to the Department of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.

The Magistrate, Jummai Ibrahim granted the prosecution’s request and adjourned the matter till 19 August, 2021, for further mention.

He then ordered that Aminu Yar’Adua be remanded in prison custody until then.

Earlier reports said Aminu barely escaped lynching on the day of the accident as a mob descended on him for killing the four pedestrians and injuring two others. Among the four killed was a toddler.

The prompt intervention of policemen at the scene of the accident, saved Aminu, said to be an off-campus student of American University of Nigeria owned by former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar.

Alpha Jet Crash: Beyond Celebrating “Aggressor”; The Tragedy That Looms

0
Comfort Obi

By Comfort Obi

I hardly know, by any stretch of imagination, why his colleagues  chose to hail him as the “Aggressor.”

It should have  been the opposite. Of course I know. He took the war, on a solo mission, to the enemies.

The enemies who have turned our lives inside out and upside down. The enemies who have taken over our farmlands, our forests, our homes. The enemies who have taken over our schools, sacked our children, their teachers, and  forced the schools to close  down. The enemies who have cut short the lives of thousands of us, including those of our Security personnel. The enemies who ra*ed our women and daughters and reduced them to s*x slaves. The enemies who are bent on making Nigeria one huge centre for illiterates. The enemies who have taken over our country, and made a laughing stock of us before the civilized world. Iraq, Somali, Sudan  Libya and Afghanistan must be green with envy at what the enemies have reduced Nigeria to. Nigeria has stolen the thunder from them.

But as I watched  Flt. Lt. Adeyemi Dairo climb down from the rescue military aircraft, and walked slowly, with a slight limp, flanked by two of his obviously proud colleagues, towards the Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor, and the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Isiaka Amao, my throat tightened. Tears welled up, and began to blur my vision.

As the young Pilot courageously walked on, bravely hiding his pains from injuries sustained, shouts of “Aggressor!, Aggressor!!”  rent the air.

Then, Amao did the un-Nigerian. He hugged the young Pilot. An Air Marshal hugged a Flt. Lt.

The tears which had blocked my vision escaped. It rolled down my cheeks. I let it have a free reign. They were tears of joy – joy that this young Pilot survived.

We have had it so bad in the past few months. Dairo’s story is refreshing. A far cry from the pains we’ve had to wear like a cloth. The pains of losing our young Airforce Pilots.

This year alone,  six of them  died in crashes in quick succession. And Dairo was going to be the seventh one. But his case came out like  a beautiful story book. It turned out one of bravery. Courage. Perseverance. Endurance. Discipline.

No wonder both the Chief of Defence Staff, General Irabor, and the Chief of the Air Staff, Vice Marshal Amao did the un-Nigerian.

There, they stood at the Military airport in Kaduna waiting for him. At that level, they hardly do that. Even in death. They send their subordinates to stand in for them. It is like “the officer is too junior in rank for a whole me to give him an honour by attending his funeral.”

Yet, it is an honour well deserved, particularly, if  the officer died in the line of duty.

I appreciated that more under retired Deputy Inspector General of Police, Parry Osayannde, during his tenure as the Chairman of the Police Service Commission. He always harped on the need to honour Policemen, no matter of what rank, who died in active service. He  ensured that a PSC Commissioner from the Zone attended the funeral.

He saw it is an inspiration to his colleagues, a consolation to his family; an honour to the dead.

It, also, gave Osayande joy to invite, to the PSC, and honour officers who had shown exceptional courage and bravery while performing their duties. “We should honour them to inspire them while alive, not just in death.” Embattled DCP Abba Kyari was once given a standing ovation, in absentia, during the Chairmanship of Rtd. IGP Mike  Okiro when his file was brought to the PSC, along with others, for promotion. You can imagine  how devastated and embarrassed we are over Kyari’s alleged tango with international internet fraudster, Hushpuppi.

On this day both Irabor and Amao stood at the airport to welcome Aggressor, I was more proudly Nigerian than ever,  with all our many imperfections.

You already know  Flt. Lt. Dairo’s story. The story of his miraculous escape from bandits. But for the purpose of this write-up, a brief recap is necessary.

He took off on a solo mission to a war zone. The war zone was a forest in Zamfara State where security intelligence detected “a cluster of bandits.” His job was to diseminate them. Why he went alone on that mission is known only to the Military High Command. Many of us, ignorant of how these operations work, are tempted to ask why he didn’t have company. A co-pilot for example. An aircraft engineer, for another example, just in case. Sounds like a risk.

So, the brave Pilot went to war. According to the NAF, he accomplished his mission. He disseminated all the bandits. Or so he thought. But on his way back to celebrate  victory, tragedy struck. A number of the qbandits were alive, alert enough, and had weapons Nigerians never thought they had. Surface to Air Missile.

Given the benefit of hindsight, I think we always knew these people had those weapons.  We were  in self denial. We were too scared to imagine the  implications.

Here’s why I think we were in self denial.

A couple of months ago, two young NAF Pilots went missing in action. They are still missing. They had gone on a mission, the type of mission Aggressor went to. That was the end of the story. They never returned.

But a few days after their clinical disappearance, some insurgents, I forget which group now – ISWAP, Boko Haram, Bandits? – claimed they shot down the Military aircraft. They showed large chunks of an aircraft which was shot down as proof. But it was  quickly denied. The Military said it was not their aircraft. They needed proof. The carcas of the Aircraft displayed by the devil’s were not enough proof. It is  the Pilots they wanted to see – dead or alive.

But more compelling, we were told that the devils “are not able to have, in their custody, a surface to air missile.” One of the questions asked was: “Do you know how much it costs to purchase one?”

Well, now, we know that they have it. And they are not  afraid  to use it for maximum effect.

We were warned by no other  person than Abubakar Gumi, Nigeria’s  self-appointed Ambassador for Banditry. After his many “diplomatic meetings” with Bandits, he told shocked Nigerians that the Bandits would soon have in their custody  surface to air missiles. Many people have a strong feeling that Gumi was economical with the truth. They think the bandits already had that in their custody when Gumi spoke.

And they have  a strong feeling that the two missing Pilots and their aircraft were shot down by Bandits. The Military should help us have a closure, and stop hoping against hope.

Flt. Lt. Dairo was lucky. NAF had initially denied the story of the crash. It said none of its Alpha jets went on any mission. That denial caused a quick retraction, sort of, by mainly Online publications which broke the story. But a few hours later, NAF made an about-turn. It  admitted the crash, and told the heart-warming story of the Pilot’s miraculous escape and survival.

As the jet came under fire, and the Pilot noticed that they had hit target, he quickly grabbed his parachute, and escaped. They went after him in hot-pursuit. He hid in the dark, dangerous, forest. His thumping heart and cellphone, which torchlight came in handy, were his only companion. He was suddenly not afraid of wild animals. Dangerous snakes. He meandered his way like a stream, and got to a village. He told his story to the first man he met, after asking God for that favour. “Let the first person I meet be a good person.” His prayers were answered. He could easily have met a Bandit sympathiser. It was from the village that he contacted those who came to rescue him.

Nigerians have since joined the Military to celebrate  him. Everybody is happy for him; happy for his family, happy for the Military. Even President Muhammadu Buhari, his taciturn Commander-in-Chief, has refreshingly congratulated him.

But we should watch and pray, for the enemies are near, and  they are well armed and dangerous.   Beyond the celebrations,  there are dangers ahead. The truth is that we are more in trouble than before. That the Bandits were able to shoot down a military aircraft has taken banditry to another level. The game has changed. We have entered a new very dangerous low. Even though I can hardly, now, differentiate between Bandits, Boko Haram/ISWAP, and rogue herdsmen, it is deceit to keep referring to any of the groups as bandits. Those who shot down the Alpha Jet are no bandits. They are certificated terrorists.

It is perplexing that since after the incident, everywhere is quiet. Those that should worry seem not to be worried. Nobody is discussing the implications. We have moved on. Just like us. The Abba Kyari scandal has taken the centre stage.  Very soon, something else will displace Abba Kyari. It is already brewing in two political  parties – the. APC and the PDP.

Nobody is asking questions.

Question like how safe  our airspace is? If these bandits can shoot down a Military jet, what does it take them to shoot down a civilian/commercial aircraft, especially, private jets?

Which is why not a few people were shocked when they read Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, and  Gumi telling us that Bandits were lesser evils than the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, and the Sunday Igboho group. Their argument: IPOB and the Igboho group are fighting for independent nations while Bandits are just in kidnapping business for money. Really? They called it business. They don’t appreciate the number of the dead, including our soldiers.

It is such stupid talks and arguments that have reduced Nigeria to chasing rats while its house is on fire. While we are busy chasing IPOB members and Igboho associates and lionising them, terrorists, masquerading as bandits are holding hundreds of our children. They are starving them to death. Their bodies are being picked in forests like cherries  – kids as young as six years old. Bandits have effectively closed down schools in Niger, Kaduna and Zamfara States. They assault everything decent by  showing us videos of kidnapped pupils and students being tortured.

They show us their dead bodies. In addition to demanding money in hundreds of millions, they now demand motor cycles. They now demand bags of rice or they will starve  our children to death. They demand cellphone credit. And you ask: What has happened to Minister Isa Patami and his NIN/SIM registration?

This other day when I watched the video of the head teacher of the Islamic School in Niger State, tell the story of the kidnapped children still in detention for seven weeks and counting, I was diminished as a human being. But that’s even nothing compared to the viral videos of young people being beheaded!

They have, also,  graduated to raiding and attacking hospitals, kidnapping health workers, and snatching babies. The other day, it was  a centre for lepers that came under attack. They kidnapped two nurses and a baby. There is, also, this heart wrenching story of a mother who watched, in agony, as her screaming two year old baby was snatched from her in her house. How much can we take as human beings? And El-Rufai and Gumi call it business for money?

Their activities have now become infectious. Kidnapping spread to the South-east, for example, because young unemployed people found out that bandits in parts of the North are making millions of Naira kidnapping people. That is the kind of business El-Rufai and Gumi condone. That is the type of business they appreciate. That is the kind of business that has been recommended  to other zones. And they have gone a step further.

Now in the South-east, the most abominable is going on. In Imo State, for example, people are being beheaded, and their heads displayed in market places. The South-east should be ashamed, learning the worst. Nobody could have imagined it.

What happened  to their culture? What happened to things held sacred and seen as abomination? That Gumi, Katsina State Governor, Amina Masari, shockingly sit down comfortably  in a discussion, with AK -47 wielding terrorists, shouldn’t have pushed anybody  to also do the abominable;  so somebody can sit down and discuss with them.

The Igbo  are a hard working people, their brothers’ keepers. Whatever happened? How did they descended to blood sucking vampires, so much so that freshly beheaded heads of their kinsmen are displayed on tables in the market square?

These terrorists, masquerading as bandits must be laughing at us. They must be making a caricature of our Leaders. They must be laughing at the Commander-in-Chief who had promised, assured and threatened, a number of times, to deal with them. Such threats have not cowed them. Such threats have, instead,  emboldened them. After each threat, they carry out an operation to celebrate it.

But the shooting down of the   Alpha Jet by these bandits is the limit. It is remarkable that this happened just weeks after Gumi warned they could acquire such sophisticated weapons.

Gumi is known to be their regular visitor. Their friend and preacher and protector. He urges the Federal Government to pay them hundreds of millions. He asks for amnesty for them. The questions which follow are:

What did they tell him that made him reach that conclusion that the guys would soon purchase  surface to air missiles. What time limit did they give him? If they still acquired the weapons after he had discussed with them, of what use were his visits?

For the records, the identity of the leader  of the  group  that shot down the Military aircraft is not hidden. His location is not hidden.

He name is Ali Kachalla. He, reportedly, resides within the Kayambana forest, and is the emperor controlling swathes of forests across many states in the North. How difficult is it to get at him? Perhaps the Federal Government should consult Gumi who has always preached amnesty for the bandits.

President Buhari has made promises to  clear these bandits. The promises  have not quite worked out. Our Security agencies are doing their best. Yet the bandits get more brazen than ever.

The implications of bandits shooting down a Military aircraft are many. Perhaps, it is an over-reaction but many are afraid they could aim at a commercial aircraft one day. What will be the fate of international flights? What will be the reaction of the international community?

That is the day, God forbid, Nigeria will truly become a pyrhea State. It will not be funny.
