By Fola James

Policemen allegedly acting on the instructions of one Anthony Chijiena, the spokesman of Dangote Group  have invaded the head office of Kings Communications Limited, publishers of MMS Plus over a story the medium published on the company.

The media house had published a scathing  report alleging that the multi-billion dollar petrochemical refinery being built by Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote in Lagos, was at the verge of being taken over by the Asset Management Company of Nigeria, AMCON.

The report exposed how the business mogul has struggled to complete the refinery, and debt owned consotium of banks to the tune of several billions of dollars. The Group has been facing challenges servicing the loans, while creditor banks have refused to restructure the loans on the refinery which was supposed to have been completed since 2017, the report also said.

AMCON, the report concluded may take over the company to save creditors funds.

Aliko Dangote
Dangote Refinery in Trouble Waters?

More than 10 times, the Group has been forced to postpone the opening of the petrochemical refinery for business, fuelling reports that that the firm will not open for business anytime soon.

According to a press release by the media house, a News Reporter with MMS Plus newspaper, Yusuf Odejobi was arrested, handcuffed and paraded for over five hours by policemen who had invaded the headquarters of the company in the early hours of Tuesday.

“The policemen acted on the directives of Dangote Group Spokesman, Mr. Anthony Chiejina who had threatened to deal with the leadership of the media outfit for publishing a news story titled, “AMCON May Take Over Dangote Refinery As Liabilities Swell“.

“When the attempt to fnd the Editor-in-Chief of MMS Plus, Mr. Kingsley Anaroke and the Editor of MMS Plus, Mr. Kenneth Jukpor were futile, the armed Policemen arrested Mr Odejobi, a Reporter with MMS Plus.

“Odejobi was handcuffed and bundled into the police vehicle: A Blue Ford Ranger’. While in the vehicle heading to the police station, the police officers threatened to use him as a litmus test or scapegoat.

“He was later taken to the Zonal CID, Zone 2 Command, Onikan where he said the Police paraded him like a criminal taking him from one office to another in handcuffs from 12noon to about 5:30pm.”

According to Odejobi, there were four officers; two from Nigeria Police Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), a legal officer and a man who claimed to work with Dangote Group.

“They asked for my personal details such as house address, family’s contacts, work history, among others. They reminded me that they could also come to my house if they didn’t meet anyone at the office any time they come again”

“I was told to write a statement and they handed me a Letter of Invitation for the Publisher of MMS Plus newspaper. When they came in the morning they had said they wanted to submit this letter of invitation for the CEO and I wondered why they couldn’t just drop the letter and leave.

“While insisting on seeing the CEO, they got angry when news stories started coming out that they raided our office. They, however, allowed me to go at about 5:30pm based on “Self Righteousness” after collecting N500 which was said to be for capturing,” Odejobi stated.

The medium further alleges that Chijiena had earlier threatened to to deal with the editorial leadership of the news outfit via legal action.

“This was after several failed attempts by Chiejina to get the Editor pull down the story, the Dangote spokesman instead of issuing a rejoinder or take legal action which he had threatened against our media house, resorted to bullying and intimidation by ordering policemen to beseige the office of MMS Plus, an act that is against information dissemination in a democratic society and a threat to the survival of the media, the fourth estate of the realm.

“Also, recall that Chiejina had searched for the photos of the news editor, Jukpor and Publisher, Anaroke on Sunday and sent them to the editor as a subtle threat, this again portends serious danger for news men in this digital age,” the statement signed by the Editor of MMS Plus newspaper, Kenneth Jukpor, said

Speaking during a news conference, the commissioner explained that 95 cases were recorded in July, while 85 had been recorded in the month of August.

To this end, the commissioner announced that government would revisit some of the precautionary measures put in the place in the past to avoid further spread.

As a first step, a task force would be set up to enforce the rules, which include mandatory wearing of mask, ban on social gathering of more than fifty persons.

OPINION: IBB’s Birthday Interview

0
Reuben Abati

By Reuben Abati

General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB), Nigeria’s Military Head of State, 1985–1993, is arguably the most controversial person to have ever led Nigeria since independence.

He turns 80 next week, August 17. Ahead of that birthday, he granted an interview to Arise TV, aired Friday, August 6, which has understandably generated considerable interest.

It has been a while since Nigerians heard directly from IBB. More recent stories about him focussed on speculations about the state of his health. Given the controversial nature of his place in Nigerian history, many also obviously waited for that interview out of curiousity.

There have been reactions from different quarters. The most telling reaction for me was someone making the remark that she was pleasantly surprised that IBB is still alive. I was shocked. She added that no other Nigerian President has been more abused by Nigerians, and if curses could kill, IBB should have been long dead and forgotten.

In the wake of the annulment of the 1993 Presidential election by the Babangida junta, activists in the South West rained curses on IBB. Old women stripped themselves naked, based on the general cultural belief that if an old woman curses anyone with her exposed chest, such a person is doomed for life.

Hurriedly- made wooden coffins were paraded on the streets of Lagos, and mock funerals were conducted.

IBB’s offence was his annulment of the 1993 Presidential election. The lady remarked that her only take-away from the Babangida interview is how God has a way of preserving the wicked. That is the kind of man IBB is. He evokes extreme passions of opposite variety with near-equal intensity.

For me, the very idea of the interview alone was useful. Getting IBB to talk at all was an achievement for Arise TV, and a special career moment for Ngozi Alaegbu, the anchor.

At 80, IBB has aged quite well. His faculties remain sharp. He was articulate, and witty as ever. His responses showed maturity and diplomacy, but a closer interrogation reveals that he is still the same foxy manipulator of public perception.

Nonetheless, there were parts of the interview that one could easily agree with and others that sounded rather fishy. IBB was right to have complained about how the major problem with Nigeria today is the “tyranny of the elite”. Other countries are able to move forward and achieve more than their potential, and inspire the people to greatness because of a certain elite consensus in that direction and the impact of responsible leadership. But here in Nigeria, “there is a disconnect between leadership and followership” as IBB argues.

The people do not trust their leaders. The leaders themselves do not care enough.  IBB blames them for sowing the seeds of disunity in the country. What I did not hear him say is how he is one of the same leaders that he blames.

On the question of the economy, IBB expressed the view that there is too much control in running the economy and that there is need to open it up further. Perhaps he is right. Government tends to ruin every investment it manages by itself in the long run.  He says the Nigerian military is overstretched, and that for Nigeria to make any difference in the war against insecurity, our soldiers need to do more, believe in what they are fighting for, they must be well-trained, well-led and well equipped.

He also talked about inconsistency in government policies. Well, that didn’t start today. There are critics who would trace that inconsistency back to the Babangida era.

On the state of the Nigerian economy, IBB says the fact that the economy has not collapsed is an indication that the government is working. If the economy were to collapse, we would all be dead, the way we died a little when the Babangida administration introduced the Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) in the mid-80s.

It was also interesting to see the senior citizen defending the supremacy of the rule of law, when he said “nobody should disobey lawful orders in a democracy.” But should anyone do so at all, at any time?

Under the Babangida junta, the courts were routinely disobeyed.  IBB is now a democrat defending the rule of law!

The more common-sensical aspects of his interview should be easier for many Nigerians to deal with, but there were a few controversial points made by the retired General, and elder statesman, which have set the tone for public discourse in the last few days.

He does not consider zoning or rotational Presidency a good idea, rather he defends merit and competence, and that the democratic process must produce a candidate of merit, regardless of where such a candidate comes from. The problem with this is that there are Nigerians whose geographical zone in the country has never produced a Nigerian Head of State since the return to democracy in 1999. They want the Presidency zoned to their own area also, in line with Sections 14(3) and 14(4) of the 1999 Constitution to ensure a sense of common ownership and to allay fears of marginalization. Is IBB aware of the conversation around this? Is he aware of the Igbo agitation for Presidency? Or the position of the 17 Southern Governors in the South who have specifically demanded that the Presidency of Nigeria in 2023 must be zoned to the South?

The future of Nigeria depends in part on how the matter of common rights under the law is resolved democratically and not through the mechanism of the tyranny of a minority elite.

He thinks that a “one-party state” cannot happen in Nigeria because Nigerians “will not allow it to happen”. Fact-check:  the country is already drifting towards a one-party state system with the gale of defections from other political parties into the ruling All Progressives Congress, and the looming implosion within the major opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The relevance of the two-party system that IBB recommends as the best option for the country is belied by the crisis in the country’s two major political parties. The view that the various other political parties do not really matter contradicts his other views about the need to practice democracy the way it is done elsewhere.

In the United States, two political parties may be dominant but there are so many other political parties representing the views and beliefs of others, including minority groups and it is the existence of such pluralism and diversity that democracy is all about.

We should understand where General IBB is coming from. He was the architect of a political system that limited Nigeria’s democracy to two political parties: the SDP and the NRC, but that experiment failed because the reduction of Nigeria’s political system to a vague synecdoche: “a little to the left and a little to the right” made it possible for the military and civilian elite to manipulate and violate the people’s will in the 90s. Nigeria is yet to recover.

General IBB struggled to use the interview to defend his legacy and rewrite history, and he made quite a spirited effort in that direction. His repeated references to the importance of democratic rule and the supremacy of the rule of law are at best ironic and revisionist.  He tells us that the Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) of 1986 was a sound economic policy and that his administration has been proven right.

When his attention was drawn to how SAP created problems for the country, his quick response was that “other people took advantage of what we did.”

SAP was the beginning of our economic woes and the root of other ills in the Nigerian society. After the introduction of SAP, which was meant to be a life-saving economic policy, Nigeria began a journey towards the precipice. The first major fuel price increase in Nigeria was under SAP in 1988.

Three decades later, IBB speaks of SAP so proudly. He can do so because Nigerians tend to forget so easily. We are so tied to the present, and so troubled, memory is a burden. But anyone who lived through the period of the 80s should not forget the SAP riots of 1989. The many, including students and unionist that were murdered in cold blood. The collapse of the education system, and the gradual impoverishment of Nigerians.

By the time IBB decided “to step aside” in 1993, Nigeria was no better than an accident victim on life support, with broken limbs.

It is again one of those ironies that IBB can boast that he and other members of his junta were saints compared to the present administration. He talks about how his government fought corruption. “So tell me who is better at fighting corruption?”

For the benefit of those who may have forgotten, once upon a time in this country, General Babangida was considered a villain. In fact, the 1989 riot was in part a protest against institutionalised corruption!  It is a sign of how bad things have become since then that the same leader can look straight into our faces and tell us that the epithet, Maradona that was used to describe him was an acknowledgement of his “deft, political moves”. He even laughs at the oxymoronic description of his persona: “the evil genius”: “I marvel at that. The contradiction – you can’t be evil and then a genius.”

To tell ourselves the truth, yes, a genius can be evil in the deployment of his talent, and the corresponding impact. The term “Maradona” referred to his foxy and manipulative tendencies. In the quarter final match between Argentina and England in the 1986 FIFA World Cup, Argentine football genius, Diego Maradona scored a goal with his hand. He later called it “The Hand of God” goal. In these days of VAR technology in soccer, that goal would have been disqualified, but he got away with it.

IBB as Nigeria’s leader was infamous for such devious manoeuvres.

But perhaps the most astonishing part of the retired military ruler’s revisionism is his excuse for the annulment of the June 12, 1993 Presidential election. He says “If it materialised, there would have been a coup d’état – which could have been violent. That’s all I can confirm. It didn’t happen thanks to the engineering and the “Maradonic’ way we handled you guys in the society. But that could have given room for more instability in the country.”

Afenifere and NADECO chieftains and others have appropriately taken up General Babangida to remind him of the truth. Nigerians elected Bashorun MKO Abiola, as Nigeria’s President. The election was free and fair. For the first time in Nigerian history, a Presidential candidate secured majority votes in virtually every part of the country. It was a truly historic, myth-defying election with a high voter turn-out. But IBB and his friends truncated the process because of the fear of a coup.

These were Generals who were master coup planners. IBB was so good at planning coups it was said he had taken part in every coup in Nigeria since July 1966.

In 1985, he decided to take charge directly by removing Major-General Muhammadu Buhari from power.

IBB himself would not tolerate any such act of treason and treachery. When his friend, the soldier and poet, General Mamman Vatsa, was implicated in a coup against the Babangida administration, IBB got him killed. The same man now tells us, he was afraid of a coup so he annulled a people’s election.

He staged a coup against the people of Nigeria. MKO Abiola was his friend too. MKO died in that struggle. And now IBB dances on his grave. And on the graves of many other Nigerians who lost their lives, leaving behind widows, widowers and orphans. If this is meant to be another Maradonic move, it is important to call it out for what it is: cruelty.

It would have been better if MKO Abiola had been allowed to claim his mandate. Even if a coup was organised against him, IBB owed him and the people of Nigeria a duty to make that coup impossible. Even if MKO Abiola died in that imaginary coup, it would have been on record that he died in the palace of democracy not in the hands of tyrants.

How does IBB feel today, now that Buhari has recognised June 12 and MKO Abiola?

Today, General IBB is the same man now prescribing criteria for Nigeria’s next President in 2023.  Hear him in his own words: “I have started visualising a good Nigerian leader. He should be a person who travels this country and has friends in every state of the country; a person who is very vast in the economy, a person who is a good politician who is ready to talk to Nigerians. I have seen about three already. The person should be in his 60s and I believe if we get such a person, Nigeria will get it right.”

I disagree with his emphasis on an age bracket. It amounts to needless politics of exclusion.

The problem with Nigerian leaders is not their biological age. It is the age of their ideas. In the United States, Bill Clinton became President at 47. President Barack Obama at 48. But after Obama, Americans elected Donald Trump, a 71-year old man. Current President Joe Biden came into office at 78.

We need a mixture of every demographic category to move Nigeria forward from the old order to a new place.

But IBB is right about the knowledge of economic issues and the need to have a bridge-builder and a nationalist in office. My only worry is that Bashorun MKO Abiola met all the criteria outlined by IBB.

In 1993, when he won the Presidential election, MKO was 55. He was also a man who had a great knowledge of the economy having established himself as a global entrepreneur. He was in addition, a Chartered Accountant. He also had friends from all parts of Nigeria and the entire world. No Nigerian before now fits IBB’s criteria better than MKO.

As the General turns 80, is his conscience beginning to prick him, hence he recommends a future President in Abiola’s image?

Chairman of People’s Democratic Party, (PDP) Governors Forum, Aminu Tambuwal, has announced that Prince Uche Secondus remains the Chairman of the PDP for the next two months.

Tambuwal, who briefed journalists in Abuja Tuesday at the end of the Governors’ two days reconciliatory meeting brokered by the Governors Forum, in Abuja, announced that the party’s national convention earlier slated for December would now hold in October.

He stated that “The PDP Stakeholders held a meeting on Tuesday 10th August, 2021, at Wadata Plaza,, Abuja on the recent developments in the PDP.

“There were extensive consultations with all major stakeholders in the Party including the Governors, members of the Board of Trustees, former Presiding Officers and current Principal officers and Leaders from the National Assembly, former Governors, former Ministers, and indeed other leaders of the Party with a view to bringing all tendencies within the Party together in view of the urgent task facing the Party as the only viable vehicle to checkmate the abysmally poor governance of the APC led Federal Government.

“The meeting deliberated extensively on the issues thrown up and resolved as follows:

“That the Constitution, traditions and practicebs of the Party should be strictly adhered to in finding solutions to any problems.

“That all parties should sheath their sword in the greater interest of the PDP and the need to RESCUE Nigeria from the avoidable National malaise and drift occasioned by the APC administration.

“That all processes leading to an early National Convention in October be immediately activated by relevant Party organs, especially National Executive Committee (NEC).

“That the Party should redouble efforts to provide a credible alternative leadership for Nigeria as it still remains the only hope for the Nigerian people for good governance.

“The meeting requested the NEC to immediately constitute a Zoning Committee for Party Offices and another Committee for National elective Offices.

“The meeting expressed appreciation to Party elders for their commitment and wisdom in handling Party affairs.

“We shall overcome and restore peace, security and development once again to Nigeria.”

Messi To Earn £500,000 (N241M) Weekly

Lionel Messi

By Akinwale Kasali

Six Time FIFA World Footballer of the Year, Lionel Messi, has agreed to a two year deal with Paris giant, Paris Saint Germain, PSG, Football Club of France.

The Argentine prolific and most decorated player ended his 18 years romance with Catalan Giant, Barcelona Football Club of Spain.

Messi is to earn a whopping £500 thousand (N241M) weekly in a two year deal, that will see him link up with former  Barcelona teammate, Neymar Junior.

The French top club  reached agreement with Messi and his lawyers with the 34-year-old expected in the French capital this afternoon (Tuesday).

Sources at the French club confirmed Messi’s lawyers had been pouring over the contract proposal since Sunday but gave it their approval this morning and Messi will travel to Paris from his home in Barcelona.

A press conference is set to take place on Wednesday at the Parc des Princes Stadium.

The final points of negotiation are understood to have concerned the six-time Ballon d’Or winners image rights, as well as the breakdown of his wages and various bonuses. The player’s representatives and Barcelona had earlier moved to dispel reports that the Spanish side made a last ditch bid to keep Messi.

Sources close to negotiations have re-affirmed that Barcelona could not afford to keep Messi even if he stayed for free as, even without him, they are above the wage cap for LaLiga this season. For that reason they did not attempt to persuade Messi to drop his salary.

Messi bid Barcelona farewell in an emotional speech on Sunday, as tears cascaded his eyes.

President Buhari Wishes Muslims Happy New Year As They Mark First Islamic Calender

Muhammadu Buhari

By Ayodele Oni

President Muhammadu Buhari, on Tuesday congratulated Nigerians, especially Muslim world, on the New Year 1443 and the commemoration of the migration (Hijra) of Prophet Muhammad from Makkah to Madinah.

A statement by a spokesman of the President, Mallam Garba Shehu stated that “On the occasion of the Islamic New Year, and the commemoration of the Hijrah, I urge Muslims and other citizens to imbibe the lessons of compassion, peace, and support for one another. I wish all Muslims a blessed year.”

President Buhari urged Muslims to reflect on the importance and historic significance of the Hijrah and the overall teachings of the Holy Prophet and follow his examples.

“As directed by the President of Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs, Tuesday which is the first day of the Islamic month of Muharram, marks Prophet Muhammad’s journey from Makkah to Medina in 622 AD.”

Some states, Oyo and Osun have declared Tuesday a public holiday to mark the first day in the islamic calender.

In Ekiti state, the Coordinator of NACOMYO, a Muslim organization, Mr Tajudeen  Ahmed, in a statement to mark the day, said “we declare our support for the oneness and unity of Nigeria and we condemn all forms of agitation for its division and breakage.

“We belief that we are better as a united entity and that we stand a better chance of attaining stardom as a united nation. Besides, it is our conviction that our existence as a nation is as it pleases Allah.

On economy, “We however express our apprehension over the continual devaluation of the Naira and the economy hardship that has become the lot of Nigerians.

“This is in addition to the high unemployment rate among the youths of our dear state and the country at large. This development has led to high rate of crime in the society.

We call on government to sincerely address the nose diving nature of our economy and provide jobs to our teeming youths in the new year. In the process, Government will make Nigeria a worthwhile and befitting nation where crime and criminality will be at low ebb.

It added that “Equally worrisome is the increasing nature of insecurity in the country. The  wave of insecurity has spread to Ekiti State and its fast enveloping the state.

“Movement across the state has now become difficult as one can easily fall victim of kidnapping or armed robbery attack in the process.

“Our one time peaceful state has been turned turbulent by the horrendous activities of  bandits, kidnappers, armed robbers and gangsters. This is indeed worrisome and condemnable!

“We call on the State Government to wake up to the security challenge and checkmate the shenanigans of the marauders so that Ekiti can be safe again.

“This is more so as the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria makes the provision of security as the primary essence of governance in our nation.”

It commended the state Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi for appointing Muslims into political positions, and urged him to do more during the new year as the present ratio of Muslims to Christians in Government is still far below equitable status.

It urged the Governor to consider Muslims for appointment into the judiciary arm of the state as there is no Muslim judge in the State.

Boko Haram: A Heartbroken Widow Tackles Nigerian Army, Says “It will never be well with you”

By Adesina Soyooye

Her young handsome husband was a soldier, an officer of the Nigerian Army.

Usually, wives of Military personnel are proud of their husband’s career. They appreciate their husbands’ sacrifices to protect the country and keep it safe.

But today, a heartbroken Officer’s widow curses the Nigerian Army. She says it will never be well with them.

Her name is Oluwaseun Sakaba. Her husband was an officer in the Nigerian Army – Lt. Col. I. Sakaba.

Young, handsome, Sakaba was killed by Boko Haram Terrorists in 2018. He was one of the 44 soldiers, according to his widow, killed when the terrorists attacked the 157 Task Force Batallion in Metele, Guzamala Local Government Area,  Borno State.

According to his grieving wife, they not only killed her husband, they killed his younger brother and his mother.

The young widow has been grieving in silence. She has been bearing her pain. She has relocated to outside Nigeria to mourn alone. She, also alleges that her husband’s benefits have not been paid.

But today, she has chosen to break her silence. And she was pushed to do so by a photograph, ironically, allegedly, posted by the Nigerian Army.

The photograph is that of “repentant” Boko Haram insurgents, carrying placards, and asking for forgiveness.

She has some questions for them and the Nigerian Army.

Repentant Boko Haram Members, begging Nigerians for forgiveness
Repentant Boko Haram Members, begging Nigerians for forgiveness.

Taking to her Instagram page, she tells the story of her pains, and she asks the Nigerian Army why she should forgive the insurgents –

For making her a young widow? For killing her husband? For killing her mother-in-law and brother- in-law? For forcing her to run  away from her country? For making widows of young women? For not paying her husband’s benefits?

And for posting the photograph, she tells the Army, “It will never be good for you.”

Following is widow Oluwaseun Sakaba’s heart breaking post.

She wrote:

”@hqnigerianarmy it we nev be well with all of u…I shld forgive dem for making me a young widow, I shld forgive dem for kill my husband, his brother and his mom!!

The Nigerian Military has lost hundreds of officers and  men to the blood thirsty sect in defence of their beloved country.

Okorocha Rejects Property Forfeiture Order, Slams Judge, Smells Blackmail

Rochas Okorocha

By Gideon Njoku

A former Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, has rejected the absolute and permanent forfeiture order on his properties by an Imo High Court.

Okorocha, now the Senator representing Imo West in the Senate, dismissed the ruling as a blackmail, wondering how it came about when the main case had not been heard.

The order for the forfeiture of the properties, worth billions of Naira, was made in Owerri on August 9, 2021, by the Hon. Justice Fred Njemanze. Incidentally, the Judge retired 24 hours after the ruling.

It was made sequel to the white paper of the report by the Judicial Panel on Lands and Other Related Matters set up by the Imo State Government.

The Judicial Panel, among others, was set up by former Imo State Governor, the Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha,  but was retained and sustained by his successor, Senator Hope Uzodinma on assumption of office.

The already gazetted document became a subject of Court action against the Government instituted by Okorocha.

A ruling had been made on February, 24,  for a temporary forfeiture of the properties, allegedly, brazenly looted from the State by Okorocha. Hearing was on course for a final forfeiture order.

That order was made on August 9 by Justice Njemanze who retired from the Imo State Judiciary on August 10.

But reacting to the order, Okorocha, in a statement signed on his behalf by his Media Adviser, Sam Onwuemeodo, dismissed it as a parting gift from Njemanze to the Imo State Government, 24 hours before  his retirement.. He said the Hon. Judge never heard the case, as what was before him was ” a preliminary objection challenging his jurisdiction or competence to give interim forfeiture order on February 24, 2021, over properties. The cases on them have been going on in various Courts in Owerri and Abuja, including the Federal High Court, Owerri, since 2019 and 2020.”

Okorocha, also, gave an indication of an appeal against the forfeiture order.

Following is the full text of  Okorocha’s statement in reaction to the forfeiture order:

SUBJECT: JUSTICE FRED NJEMANZE OF HIGH COURT, OWERRI GAVE JUDGEMENT IN A MATTER HE NEVER HEARD, LESS THAN 24 HOURS TO HIS RETIREMENT TODAY, AUGUST 10, 2021.

– HE DID THAT AS A PARTING GIFT TO IMO STATE GOVERNMENT.

– WE ARE GOING TO APPROACH RELEVANT AGENCIES TO INVESTIGATE THE JUDGEMENT AND PROVE HIM OR US RIGHT OR WRONG.

– WHAT WAS BEFORE JUSTICE NJEMANZE WAS PRELIMINARY OBJECTION, CHALLENGING HIS JURISDICTION OR COMPETENCE TO GIVE INTERIM FORFEITURE ORDER ON FEBRUARY 24, 2021, OVER PROPERTIES THE CASES ON THEM HAVE BEEN GOING ON IN VARIOUS COURTS IN OWERRI AND ABUJA, INCLUDING THE FEDERAL HIGH COURT, OWERRI, SINCE 2019 AND 2020.

“On Tuesday, August 3, 2021, Justice Njemanze sat. The lawyers in the matter argued on the preliminary objection. Chief Obah Maduabuchi, SAN, was Okorocha’s Lawyer and Chief Louis Alozie (SAN) was for the Imo State Government.

“Justice Njemanze reserved ruling on the Preliminary objection and told the lawyers that they would be Communicated on the date. He also told other lawyers who had applied to be joined for their clients, to wait until after the ruling on the preliminary objection.

“On Wednesday, August 4, 2021, the Court Clerk sent text messages to the lawyers that the Court would sit on Friday, August 6, 2021 for the lawyers to adopt their processes, instead of the expected ruling on the Preliminary objection.

“On the Friday, August 6, 2021, Lawyers were in Court. Justice Njemanze did not come. He did not sit that day. Lawyers left and those involved left.

“That is to say, on the Friday, August 6, 2021, neither the expected ruling on the Preliminary objection was given, nor the adoption of the processes as Contained in the text messages of Wednesday, August 4, 2021.

“On Monday, August 9, 2021, while lawyers in the matter were expecting to hear from the Court on the issue of date, the news came that Justice Njemanze had given Judgement in a substantive suit he never heard and not also on the Preliminary objection, even when lawyers had not adopted their processes.

“In the Contentious forfeiture Order Justice Njemanze gave on February 24, 2021, only five properties were directly linked to Okorocha and family, including Eastern Palm University and Royal Spring Palm hotel.

“But, both Justice Njemanze and the Imo State government had talked about pages 226 to 272 of the aberration called the WHITEPAPER, as Containing Okorocha’s Properties. This is bare blackmail. It is not true

“We have meticulously gone through pages 226 to 272 of their WHITEPAPER. The pages contained layouts and estates and none belonged to Okorocha and the family.

“Some of those who own these properties in the interim forfeiture order are also in various courts and like we said, some of them had also applied to Justice Njemanze to be joined. But Justice Njemanze told them to wait until he ruled on the preliminary objection. But he went ahead to give Judgement in the substantive matter he never heard. This is absurd.

“In the Contentious Judgement, he gave absolute forfeiture order on the properties in question, in a matter he never heard and which matters on them, have been going on in Courts of Competent Jurisdiction. And in less than 24 hours to his retirement today being Tuesday, August 10, 2021.

“This is the first time we are hearing that a Judge could give Judgement in a matter or Case he never heard. This is not good for the Society and for the judicial system.”

One of the properties, Eastern Palm University, had since been taken over and renamed Kingsley Ozumba Mbadiwe University by the Imo State Government, to the excitement of most Imolites.

PDP Crisis: Dickson Allies Secondus Against Governor Wike

By James Orji

Former Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa state does not always agree with Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state, but the squabbles in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP over plans by some members of the party to oust the Chairman, Uche Secondus may have further driven a wedge between them.

Dickson, now a senator of the federal republic is one of those that have openly stuck out his neck out for the embattled chairman despite the groundswell of pressure being mounted on him to step aside.

This is, however, contrary to subterranean move of Governor Wike, which the magazine learnt, is the unseen hand behind the problem facing Secondus who has insisted that he will not be pushed out of the prime position unceremoniously.

Governor Wike and PDP National Chairman, before they finally parted ways, were allies until politics in the PDP set them apart.  The gulf between them is now as wide as the years they were together as buddies.

But the PDP boss, who has insisted he will not leave office until December when his tenure is expected to expire, is now getting support from an unusual quarter; Senator Dickson who himself had a squabble with Governor Wike over contested oil blocks between Bayelsa and Rivers states while he was governor.

Many people are asking whether Dickson support for Secondus is an extension of his feud with the Rivers helmsman while he held sway as Bayelsa governor.

Declaring his support for the embattled PDP chairman last week, Senator Dickson who now represents Bayelsa South in the Senate said plan to remove Secondus will amount to a fruitless exercise.

Wike and Secondus
Wike and Secondus Set Apart By PDP Politics

He spoke on the heels of the resignation of six members of the NWC of the party who said their action was based on Secondus’ leadership style. The development has further polarized the party to the extent that efforts by Governors elected on its platform and other stalwarts to salvage the party have ended in a deadlock.

A PDP caucus in the House of Representatives, led by Kingsley Chinda (PDP, Rivers) had also last week, demanded the resignation of the PDP chair. Chinda is a former lawmaker in the Rivers state House of Assembly and a close associate of Governor Wike.

In spite of the pressure on the chairman to resign his position, Senator Dickson has stood with him like the proverbial rock of Gibraltar, describing those demanding Secondus’ ouster as saboteurs who want to destroy the party and its quest to take power in 2023.

The demand on the PDP chairman to resign “is part of the scheme to call a dog a bad name to hang it.  The general public should note that the statement signed by some members:  3 members of the working committee and 3 Vice chairmen of the party (as indicated in the press release) does not constitute a valid resolution of the National Working Committee,” Dickson said.

According to him “It is all an effort to contrive a crisis in the party to further the ulterior objective of those who are funding it, the intent of which is to cause a major crisis in the PDP.

“Secondly, my attention was also drawn to a purported statement by the Reps Caucus. As Nigerians and all PDP leaders know, the minority leader of the Reps is Honorable Ndudi Elumelu not Hon Kingsley Chinda, and members of the House of Representatives caucus have already spoken that they did not hold any such meeting.

“All this is to create a media frenzy backed up by the sponsored demonstrations at the party secretariat on Monday which are designed to force the chairman to resign in order to set up a caretaker committee which is illegal. Happily the National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus has issued a statement a short while ago that he will not resign. I support this decision fully as it is backed by the PDP constitution.

“Let me also bring to the attention of all that by the PDP constitution, a vote of no confidence even by a duly constituted NWC or other organs of the party cannot remove a Chairman. The chairman is voted for and can only be removed by the National Convention unless on his own volition, he chooses to resign,” Senator Dickson said.
